PROTECT HEALTHY WATERSHEDS
INITIATIVES TO PROTECT WATERSHEDS
Water supplies, animal habitat, and recreation are all dependent on healthy watersheds A watershed is an area of land that drains rain water into one location such as a stream, lake or wetland. These water bodies watersheds sustain life, in more ways than just supplying our drinking water and water for agriculture and manufacturing. They also offer opportunities for recreation and provide habitat to numerous plants and animals. Unfortunately, various forms of pollution, including runoff and erosion, interfere with the health of the watershed WWF Kenya recognizes and has put great emphasis in protecting healthy watersheds and brings significant resources and complementary tools to this work that protects the entire watershed that drains into it The healthy watersheds program both supports and integrates the work of these efforts to encourage more holistic protection of aquatic ecosystems A variety of protection approaches are available, ranging from state policies and programs to locally driven to track watershed health and protection status.
According to the WWF Kenya, more than 75% in foods, fiber, manufactured goods and tourism depend on clean, healthy watersheds That is why proper watershed protection is necessary to you and your community to ensure a high ecological value.
6 T H E M A S T E R C L A S S
Compounded by climate change, water scarcity in Kenya is a big challenge that is growing worse by the day Currently, Kenya is considered a water stressed country with a declining freshwater availability per capita of only 493 cubic meters This basically means that there is barely enough water in the country for everyone, hence the urgent need to conserve and restore the few watersheds to boost water production and availability in the country

Servings 4 Cook 40 Mins You'll love the simplicity of heating up cooked brown rice and adding fresh cilantro and fresh limes. Not only is it crazy easy and bursting with flavor, but it's naturally vegan and gluten free! This recipe is the perfect side dish for a healthy meal! It tastes just like Chipotle’s, and it’s so easy to make. Mwanaidi Shishi INGREDIENTS 1 ½ cups brown basmati rice, rinsed, 1 bay leaf, ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro, 2 Tbs lime juice (from about 1 lime), 1 ½ Tsp lemon juice (from 1 small lemon), 1 Tsp Santa Maria olive oil and ½ Tsp fine sea salt INSTRUCTIONS 1. Bring a large pot of water to boil over high heat. Pour in the rinsed rice and drop in the bay leaf Give the mixture a brief stir and let it boil for 30 minutes, reducing the heat if necessary to prevent overflow 2. Drain the rice, return it to the pot, cover, and let it rest for 10 minutes off the heat Discard the bay leaf and fluff the rice with a fork 3 Add the cilantro, lime juice, lemon juice, Extra Virgin olive oil, and salt and stir to combine. Taste and add additional salt if necessary (I usually add an extra ¼ teaspoon) Cover until you’re ready to serve 4 Leftover rice will keep well in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 5 days Simmer the whole grain rice with bay leaves to add savory flavors, then season it with lemon and lime juices and toss it with cilantro for a slightly tart, fresh taste 1 2 S E R V E D I CILANTRO LIME BROWN RICE Brown Rice

Karuru Falls
The Aberdare ranges is a hotbed of waterfalls due to the Rift Valley escarpments and the mountain ranges. Karuru Falls is one of these, and probably the best of the lot Plunging 273M below the viewing point, the crashing sound of the water can be heard kilometers away It falls in three tiers, with only the top tier visible from the viewing point The green mountain vegetation around the waterfall make it a lovely spot
Lugard Falls
Lugard’s waterfall results from river Galana passing through volcanic rock, carving a narrow path and creating rapids and falls as the water flows. The waterfall is situated located along the crocodile infested Galana River in Tsavo East National Park The falls are more of rapids than falls, with water flowing through white, pink and gray rocks forming a stunning landscape The falls merge into a downstream crocodile pool.
Sheldrick Falls
Deep in Shimba Hills National Reserve, this lovely 21 meters drop of fresh spring water are a sight to behold The waterfall plunges into a pool at the bottom, a perfect spot for one to dip into for a refreshing swim in the cool waters The area is rich in vegetation with butterflies and birds taking advantage of this in their plenty, hence a very impressive environment for one to relax
Tigoni Falls, Limuru
Within the lush greenery tea fields of Kiambethu tea farm and the forested lands of Limuru is Tigoni Falls. It is hidden in a small riverine forest that is a favorite of the city’s hikers The fall drops 18 meters and is a lovely spot for a picnic escape from the city’s hectic life
Sheldrick Falls is located deep within the Shimba Hills National Reserve, Kwale county and has an impressive 21 meter drop of fresh spring water with a striking natural plunge pool at the bottom. The sight of these falls offers amazing lianas and greenery that lace it, as well as fauna and beautiful rare butterflies. You have to walk a distance of approximately 2km through the bushes, forests, and grassland to make it to the breathtaking falls.
Chepkiit Waterfalls
This amazing scenic fall is located 2 km from Eldoret Airport, Nandi county It is carved out walls of Great Rift Valley and are formed as river Sosiani water flows over a rock escarpment turning into a surging foam The waterfall has four viewpoints from where you can see spectacular views of the water flowing and disappearing under a rock edge and downstream with flora and fauna around it. Kenyan citizens are charged Kshs 200 per adult and Kshs 100 per child while non Kenyans pay Kshs 500 entrance fee.

HIKELIKEAPRO
Hiking, like walking, is a pretty simple and safe activity, but it requires a bit of prep. To hike comfortably and safely, follow these golden rules to hike like a pro from celebrated travel enthusiast Henry Mbare And remember, the reward for a hike that includes some hills might be a panoramic view once you reach the top, not to mention that the downhill leg will be a relative breeze.
Pace yourself
Sounds easy, but many waste a lot of energy by starting too fast Start slow, 1 5 2 Kph (should feel easy), and then settle into a day long, sustainable pace 3 5 kph for most hikers
Take Breaks
Have short breaks of 10 minutes max and have regular calorie intake (snack often).
Adjust your pack often
There is no “perfect setting” for an entire trip Every couple hour or so, make small tweaks to your pack’s harness, hipbelt, shoulder, and stabilizer straps Alternate the load between your shoulders and hips.
Mix up your hiking stride
On flat, well maintained trails, using the same muscles in exactly the same way is a recipe for injury Try taking shorter and longer strides; get up on your toes, and then back on your heels
Eat well & Carry enough Water
On long treks you need a steady supply of fuel Top snack like coated raisins, or peanut butter Top breakfast: Granola or muesli Dinner: dehydrated beans Savvy hikers try to avoid carrying more water than they absolutely need
Choose the right socks
Shoes are important, but so are socks The idea that you need thick, padded socks is one of the biggest myths in backpacking Get socks that fit
Remember to pack extra clothing, a flashlight and a trail map

Head-to-Head
Over the years the secret has weighed on me. I did a pretty good job of forgetting for a while, but it found ways of surfacing and lately I wasn’t able to push it back down FAITH RONO narrates the head to head seat down
We had now come to a conclusion on when we were going to meet up with Dickson All of us Rahab, Joyce and I Hornbill was the best place to take some tequila shots before taking up the matter You know what they say about tough time “When life gives you lemons, grab salt & Jose Quavo Especial Gold tequila! This is the time Matiangi came handy when he gazetted some holiday that we least expected.
This was the best time to meet up with Dickson I was bow crossing my fingers that the ladies couldn't go and have their HIV test before we could meet up with Dickson They thought that they are the main host of the meeting but I was the one
The day came and we had to go to Hornbill and get reservation for a small ‘party’. Dickson was invited. Joyce was in the best position to convince him to come to the party
Dickson was now here All of us glammed up for the occasion Of course, we started off with some throwback stories on how we later met in campus n was not feeling out of s to make him feel like he o see his eye contact with
ued chatting, we all saw me to reveal to Dickson w all knew about him We what this smooth talker tell us after all this But n will say anything to set ree. Deep inside me, I uldn't even be the end of ter Dickson tells us the why he did what he did to sure he would sense that was coaching Hiding the was dating both Rahab
Before we could reveal this to him, we were not sure if Rahab was still having feelings for Dickson On the other hand, we were not sure if Joyce was ready to lose Dickson You know sometimes a lady can just stay with a guy who cheats Maybe until she feels she doesn't need him anymore
"By the way Dickson, why did you have to be having Joyce as your sneaky link? She is the closest person that I know of That was so lame of you What did I do?" Rahab interjected with this question in the middle of our other stories Joyce on the other hand asked Dickson why he had to lie about not having anything to do with Rahab In his defense, Dickson told Rahab straight to her face that he was tired of being leashed around He didn’t like the way she was dragging times when she knew men have needs.
"What! Dickson, so that's true?" I asked him pretending alarmed Dickson said yes without any regrets He felt out of place with all the stares "Is that why you called me here? Dickson asked us The two ladies answered 'yes' simultaneously He was about to storm out, when I asked him to stay put as there was something imminent I was about to do it. When I committed the shameful act years ago, I immediately swore to myself that I would never tell a soul what I had done I buried it and tried to forget it I was about to finally confessed my deep, dark secret I stood up and dauntlessly told them all that I had something for all of them All seemed to be bewildered by my statement

BRIQUETTES VS LUMP CHARCOAL
People typically have very strong opinions about charcoal Some swear by lump charcoal, others will only ever use briquette charcoal While it might not seem like these two types of fuel are all that different, there are actually some important distinctions to consider next time you light up the grill Charcoal Briquettes are growing popularity across the globe They are made from bamboo, charcoal dust, and agro waste and then compressed to give them their defining shape. Compared with traditional fuels, charcoal briquettes can not only generate heat continuously but also produce no smoke and odor during combustion
Although it takes a longer time to light, it typically burns 4 times longer than lump Charcoal The briquettes maintain a steady temperature and are usually cheaper. The only issue from briquettes is that they don’t burn as hot as lump charcoal GLO LITE CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES are the best for Barbecues and all your open fire cooking needs Get a Pack today is supermarket near you

Knowing what to share and what not to share is an important communication skill for couples to learn and use in their relationship Being honest with your spouse does not necessarily mean you must share every single thought, dream, fear, or fantasy with this person. In fact, honesty may be a double edged sword in your marriage Grab your Ballantine’s Whisky as DANIEL NDIWA narrates the drama.
Alex and Ezra needed to hear Nana's side of the story But there were some unanswered questions as to why Nana was ready to open up to me and not his boyfriend or Abel Good thing with our friendship is that we had always learnt to calm down and relax before jumping into any kind of conclusion after an argument I knew everything would turn out well hopefully at the end Ezra had calmed down as soon as we walked out after few shots of Ballantines whiskey. We were not sure of what was going to happen after their conversation. It was then or never. We hoped that Nana and Ezra could resolve the difference and look in to the depth of their relationship.
I now had time to talk to Alex and explain everything that happened Maybe Ezra would get to understand my story through Abel I really had to assure Abel that nothing had ever happened between Nana and I and it was never going to happen Abel was curious to know the miscarriage part of Nana's story and why I thought Nana was comfortable enough to tell me I had to be easy with my words to make him understand me We knew this needed a place where we could be taking shots as we talk about it We had to rush back to the house to see the situation and alert Ezra and Nana where we would be just in case, they needed us We thought of our favourite joint where we would be sure of getting served our best drinks. The place always had this placid environment that made us open up. Not forgetting the whiskey cocktails too that they served us Now it was time to open up and explain everything As we grabbed our drink, I started narrating the ordeal to Alex:
Bro, you know, it's not like Nana is a community wife You know if there is one thing we respect as men is our friend's girlfriends And we would never do anything to break our friendship Nana was afraid to tell Ezra of her miscarriage You know how Ezra is keen when it comes to traditions? You remember how he told us the other day how he firmly believes in "red thigh girls" stories and how he believes in generation curses? Alex laughed that off and reminded me of how Ezra once told us that in their traditions he should never be seen shaking hands with the mother in law or anywhere close to Nana's mother. These are those things that would make Nana freak out and be uncertain of their relationship together. We had always taught him to embrace the new era and forget about those traditions As for Nana, she thought that Ezra would leave her believing that miscarriages were caused by few traditions But deep down, Nana had a problem beyond that Nana had invasive prenatal test that might have caused her to have that miscarriage She was always looking for some good time to share with Ezra so he could walk the journey together with her Bro, you know how these tests can ruin you? Alex did kit seem like he was getting me I had to give him some bit of explanation on what those tests are and what it entails As a medicine student, I explained to him that there are usually two sampling The Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) These are invasive diagnostic treatments that allow testing of fetal chromosomes mostly used to diagnose chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome but they can also be used to detect some inherited genetic disorders in high risk families like Nana's family
"Bro, we really need to seat down and talk about this and assure the two, Ezra and Nana we are all together in this The two need us the most Let's work this out together when Nana is ready" Alex interjected Before we could utter anything else, Ezra's text popped "Hey man, can we join you? Where are you two? We have a thing to talk about Am coming along with Nana "

An Abuse Tactic
In a violating and abusive move, sometimes abusers will give drugs to an intimate partner without their knowledge. How often does this happen? This could be the case for Jeff and Hannah Peris narrates the drama that unfolds after 12 hours of being offline
Jeff! I shouted Even without getting to hear him, I rushed to where my sister was. Jeff never seemed to be worried at all He looked so zombie with hangover written all over him I couldn’t but imagine the worst I didn't know whom to blame The house looked messy More like a crack house Myriads of thoughts running my mind on what in this world was going on First things first, I decided to see if my sister could get up Hanna! Hanna! I helplessly called her
I had suspected Jeff had no good intention towards my sister I was right But how could he do this? What was his intention? Wasn't he the same guy who promised us that he was going to take care of Hanna? Together with her unborn child? I know Hanna wasn't even ready for all this Jeff just lay dead on the couch scrolling his phone I felt like he knew his mission was complete My options were limited Calling my folks was not an option It would open a whole pandora box. If I decided to involve the police, my sister would be murky waters, especially considering it would drag in our folks The case would take a different turn I would have to go solo on this I gave her some water as she regained some consciousness I was a bit happy Hanna! You know how worried I was about you? What happened? I asked her
I could now join the dots now It was not an ordinary hangover. This is all what Jeff was intending to do He wanted to get rid of the baby without any of us noticing before it's too late
Few hours later as we could wait for Hanna to be stable, I was now looking for a way to take her to the hospital just in case This would have coated me no coin She was below twenty four so dad's insurance was covering her still I decided to take her to the hospital to just make sure everything would end up well
As soon as we got to Avenus Hospital, which was a stone throw distance from Jeffs's place Before anything else, the doctor took her and I was told to wait outside That is when I met Angie, my old school mate back in high school We started having some conversation reminiscing about our days back then A nurse called me and, on her face, not everything seemed to be okay.
"Are you close to this lady?" Nurse asked me I was tensed I told the nurse that I was her sister She asked me if we could have a talk and give her some details that she would need
I have good news and bad news regarding your sister I don't know where I should start But, don't panic, everything will be okay.
Tbc I carried her and placed her on the bed She was weak and still drowsy I asked Jeff if I could get some milk Jeff was hesitant He just said that I would be adding more salt to the injury and that I should let Hanna relax.

Deal-Too Good?
The rise of male female relationships in general has also made way for guys like us, whose friends are almost all women. Whenever I hang out with girls it's more like they vent to me and talk about serious shit all the time With guys it's just hanging out and doing stupid shit DANIEL NDHIWA talks on the encouraging counterpoints
Most people have that clique of one or two friends that they will always hang out with. They are either two or mostly three Talking of the close ones Not just an acquaintance Often, men will always have this crazy escapade talking about ladies, football and future Hey, let’s not forget about those new model cars and how they have been advanced. So, this time, I did not know what Kush wanted to share with us But in case of anything, we always met with Kush and Bena at some joint where they never disappoint us when it comes to their cocktail. They are cocktail genii.

Kush is that one friend who would never leave a lady pass without a hello. I don't know how true this statement is but most people say if a man doesn't like football and beer, he loves women. A man must like any of these three and perhaps all But too much of it doesn't end up well
Am always the first to book the seats and sometimes I would meet Bena already there Kush is fond of giving us lame excuses as to why he gets late. It's always about his "mamaa" or few sneaky links We had always cautioned him but he seems to enjoy all this.
Few minutes after we had ordered our drinks, Kush showed up. This time, with a small "kabambe" and not his ipad and iPhone 12 promax He fancies fine gadgets "Wapi machine boss!" Bena inquired about his phone He laughed off and ordered some drinks.
"That's why I called you two here guys " Kush told us. Before the waitress got him some few drinks, we started off talking about the previous matches Kush is an Arsenal diehard fan. We often avoid this conversation of late. You know they are currently leading the table and Kush will always get away with it On the other hand, am hopeful that as a Liverpool fan, we will get at the top of the table Bena is that Man United fan We all know how man united fans are.
The previous night, Arsenal was playing against man United Bena had a lady in his house He couldn't miss this game because of the lady. Furthermore, they had already spent some few night together
Beth was the name of the lady So Bena had to come with a trick to leave the lady behind and go watch the game Bena was already tired of the lady and wanted her to go for good. Kush on the other side had a crush on the lady They only met once Bena called Kush and asked him if he could stay with Beth. Kush had to miss the game. Bena lied to Beth that he would come pick her at Kush's place Beth agreed Bena was going for some few days. After a while, Beth decided to call Bena since it was getting late. It was now 12 They had a lot to drink Bena had already told Kush about how bored she got with the lady. It was okay for him if he would have the lady as well Men
Kush is a weak guy when it comes to ladies. He had already shared his screen lock with the lady so she could choose her type of music from YouTube and Spotify. Seem the lady was having some other intentions Kush was so innocent
In the morning next day, the lady spiked some drugs on Kush drinks When he woke up, he couldn't find the lady, Beth and his phone and iPad He was afraid of telling Bena He never knew how his reaction would be.
That evening is when now he decided to open up to us about what happened. He had swore never to let that happen again "Bro, am sorry, I did not know if that Beth could go to that extreme man!" We will find her soon bro " Bena assured Kush
