Aqua Killers PLASTIC AFFECT ON

MARINE WILDLIFE

We’re all aware of microplastics and the significant harm they’re inflicting on our oceans and aquatic life. Microplastics are a major part of the issue. Not only these tiny plastic particles themselves that are harmful, but also the chemicals that leach out into the water. It’s these chemicals they are treated that makes them mouldable or flame retardant. They include detrimental chemicals such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls. The Plastic waste littering in our oceans threaten the lives of millions of marine animals. Seals, whales, dolphins, seabirds, fish, crabs and many other sea animals are dying and becoming sick because of this deadly environmental concern. Approximately five million to 14 million tons flow into our oceans from coastal areas per year. Sunlight, wind, waves, and heat break down that material into smaller bits that look—to plankton, bivalves, fish, and even whales—a lot like food. The increasing volume of ghost gear in our oceans increases the volume of microplastics will increase too. Nets and other man-made equipment can entangle and kill whales, dolphins, turtles, seals and other sea animals.

7.

THE

CLASS

80% of microplastics are from landbased sources, like bottles and bags. Every year five million to 14 million tons flow into our oceans from coastal areas. There often are tiny bits of plastic in the fish and shellfish we eat. Scientists are racing to figure out what that means for our health

CHAPTER 4

Ju

st S laying

When it comes to flirting online, it can sometimes be intimidating to take that first step. But in the age of internet dating, it’s skewing to normalcy. Jane wasn’t about seeing the chance blown.

FAITHRONO

narrates the night after

the car break down with Rishad

For one reason or another, dates tend to happen at night. While some people might try to have a daytime first date over coffee or a walk in the park, the dominant cultural script we have for dates (dinner, movie, bar) is one that begins sometime after 5 p.m. and winds its way through the course of the evening. That’s what led us to this point, giving suggestive stares with Rishard on my living room couch. I felt so comfortable with him around. But to him, he seemed so uncomfortable. I had to find ways to make him feel comfortable, I suggested a movie so we could converse as we watch sipping some snap beer. He had no option but to spend a night at my place as he waited for wee hours of the morning to tow his machine. By the way, I had realized men are not comfortable in any lady's house. So, I decide to ask why he seemed so nervous. Na je nikipatwa na mwenye analipa rent? We laughed off and continued to a flirty tete-a- tete. Things were moving smoothly nut something still held him back. Rishad was not like those other team mafisi and definitely didn’t show any sign of those who shag and pass. He gently held me. I felt sleepy, I could see how much he was struggling with watching the movie alone. The light drizzle made the situation no better. When he asked for a duvet is when I knew he felt fizzled. I had taken the extra one for laundry the previous day but I never picked them up. So, I said no without giving him any explanation but hinted on sharing one.

Eabl_kenya

The night was deep in and we decided to go sleep. I looked strange as he tucked me in and proceeded to just lay next staring at the ceiling as though seeing past the stars. I Couldn’t sleep. After an hour of tossing and turning, I called on him. He wasn’t asleep and we proceeded to have some pillow talk. It was candid, we talking about everything in life. Our past and what's in our bucket list. Rishad could be open and told me about the grimmest things about his life. That made me open up even more. He had a way to get me going. His cuddle made me warm and the conversation so therapeutic. I still had a lot in mind, on why such a guy would stare at crippling prey with no actions. “Or maybe he is married? Maybe gay?” I kept wondering. I respected his space and his principles too. To me the most important thing to keep in mind when sleeping over with a date is that their experience matters, too — and how they feel about things could impact whether you ever see each other again or not. I felt like just texting Samira already. I couldn't wait. I felt like the story could be very interesting. It was dark. Suddenly, I saw some light. Rishad had an incoming text which halted our moment. “Which of the two would you like to be driven in? “he asked showing me two sleek BMW’s. He was already ordering a new machine to be shipped in the coming weeks. I was sold, I even envisioned my self on the wing seat pointing where to go. Looking at my phone, it was 3 am! I had some knock at the door. No one could come to my mind at the moment... Tbc

DOPE

CONVERSATIONS

When it comes to festivities, no party would be complete without a platter full of chicken wings. Fried foods are a guilty pleasure for many people. They are tender on the inside with a delicious crunchy outside. Wings—their power cannot be underestimated. While you can cook this finger licking beauties in many different ways, in our DOPE CONVERSATION we vibe courtesy of HOT POINT APPLIANCES as we highlight two of the most favored ways in cooking chicken wings. While there is a plethora of cooking variations deep frying them in oil is more popular in Kenya but with the new air fryers many chicken wing lovers are adopting this more. While picking your poison just be sure to grab some wet wipes before you dig in!

Vs AIR FRIED CHICKEN WINGS

DEEF FRIED CHICKEN WINGS

Air Fryer Chicken Wings are the best and crispiest wings ever! Done in less than 20 minutes, you'll never make wings another way again! Air frying is a gamer changer. That’s why it’s wining more hearts especially with the new Nutricook 6l air fryer. With no oil involved, air fried wings are super crispy on the outside and tender and juicy. A little seasoning pack it with great taste 1000x better than frying in oil and is so much healthier too!

What is there not to love about fried foods? For one thing there is the unhealthy aspect with the excess oil used to fry them. Aside the unhealthy down side and cooking for a longer time, it’s a perfect guilt pleasure. Deep fried chicken is flavored inside out. With right temperature of the oil, the wings will be cooked through with a tasty crunchy crust with succulent meat inside. Deliciousness at its best!

Grant Masters William Grant established Grant’s Blended Scotch Whisky in 1898, when largest producer of blended Scotch Whisky, Pattison's, at the time went out of business. By blending only, the finest single malt whisky with grain distilled whisky, William Grant was able to create something exceptional. Today, Grant's continues to be family-owned and run. Grant's is the oldest familyowned blended whisky and is currently sold in over 180 countries. It is also the world's fourth largest Scotch whisky brand with the mother company, William Grant & Sons also owns single malt whisky brands, including Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. The signature triangular bottle was first designed in 1957 by Hans Schleger, to showcase the colour and quality of the whisky while still allowing it to be stacked efficiently. Since its humble beginnings, Grant’s has stayed an entirely family run business, through 5 generations of Grant descendants. It has gone on to be widely known worldwide, being sold in over 180 countries. The Triple Wood 12 Year Old was added to their lineup in 2021

GRANT’S TRIPLE WOOD 12 YEAR OLD- DEFYING THE ODDS FOR QUALITY Many whiskies take their flavour from just one cask, but not this one. As you might expect from the name, Grant's Triple Wood features whisky drawn from three types of cask – specifically Sherry cask provides sweet spice robustness, American Oak lends subtle vanilla smoothness and Bourbon refill offers brown sugar sweetness, resulting in a rich, complex, vanilla taste with a long soothing and warm finish – a feeling you won’t want to rush. Approachable blended Scotch whisky from the world-famous brand, taking the place of the Family Reserve as its flagship expression.

The

Audacity

What’s the worst date you’ve ever been on? Did it involve boring conversation and bad breath? Or did it involve you getting scammed out? Allan and I were prepared to ensure these notorious women who use dating and social apps to live a life of luxury while defrauding men will never have a field day again. Grab your Ballantines Whisky and drift with DANIEL NDIWAH on this he narrates the ordeal Allan and I had to come up with a plan. We really wanted to see why these ladies had decided to play foul. We ordered a botti of Ballantines and cola soda from The Bar as we set to discuss the plan forward. We really wanted to see how these ladies benefit from doing all this. As we continued conversing with Allan, a brilliant idea came up. Steer them to a Truth or Dare game that would lead to going through their phone at some moment. I know with Allans mixology prowess and Ballantines, the antics would work. At first, this seem to be hard. None of the ladies could stay an inch away from their phone. On my side, I had decided to invite Jane over some drinks. Allan would do the same and we could keep each other in touch. Finally, the day came. I invited Jane over. She came looking stunning as always. She looked strapped on her Agame. Things were moving smoothly, I only had to maintain on the drinks so as not to fall off the radar. It was fun. Interesting too, we opened up a lot and did some imaginable stuff. Finally, I cracked to get her give me her phone to read the last message. I could see her peeping into her phone and giggling every time and then, which ascertained me that Allan was also playing it right on his end. Albeit being drunk she was a bit hesitant but I insistent rules and rules and we can’t spoil the fun. "Babygirl, money attracts money. If we don't do this, we can't have such men and such amounts in our banks" read part of the last text from Marya. “This guy, is all inn and today I will get the passwords” read the last part. It was bright as day for her that I knew what this was all about. She tried avoiding this with some kisses but I wasn’t to snowed on this one. I was irked by all her phony excuses and urged her to come clean or leave my apartment. Only then she broke down confessing her undying love tainted by why she lured me into this.End game, being with me made her attract other up-scale men who were now breathing on her neck. She further confessed neither Jane nor Marya was working. That was their lifestyle. They took advantage of every man they were dating. Too bad they never learnt about financial management. It was too hard for them to have some savings. One of them admitted how hard it was for them to save because they would get money anytime, they needed. We winded up the confrontation, since she had not, squeezed any penny from me, and continued into the night drinking some fine whiskey. We vowed not to make it a big deal or tell our friends (Allan & Marya) as it would rock their budding relationship. I was socked in thoughts on her audacity. The frightening degree to which she believed her own bullshit. I knew better, you never corner a squirrel in an attic so I played it cool. At this point, there was no need of now Allan going through the conversation. So, I texted Allan and made some new plans. I had to take some vengeance. Sooner than expected. Revenge is best served cold they said, I had just shelved my intentions in the deep freezer. TBC...

Creativity is the oxygen in marketing – it is important in all aspects, from how we understand and collaborate with the people who consume, to making sense of brand challenges, and coming up with memorable solutions which will build our brands, as well as landing a sale. Marketers need to deploy creativity against strategic opportunities, a broad audience and balancing long-term and salesgenerating activity. While there is no doubt Kenya’s creatives are over working, some are just a niche higher. Brands are now appreciating more creative arts that make their brands stand out and in a manner beyond mediocrity. Communication is constantly evolving, and while some have chosen to stick by the traditional ways some companies in Kenya are leveling their game, showing a lot of creative prowess in how they are coping to their markets.

WELLNESS

STEAM TREATMENT This versatile skin treatment can be simple and free or as luxe and costly as you — and your wallet — choose. Our Aesthetician IVY MULUKA rolls out simple techniques to try for a quick steaming exercise at home Steaming your face at home The beauty of steaming is there are plenty of ways to do it, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can purchase a facial steamer specifically designed for skin care purposes, but this is optional. While using a steamer is the easiest and a more powerful than other DIY methods, you can still enjoy the benefits of face steaming at home. Steam can cause serious burns, so it's very important to keep your face a safe distance away from the source of the steam. Steaming should feel good. If it feels too hot or irritating, stop. Steaming techniques to try: 1. Hot towel technique For this old-fashioned method of face steaming: Put a clean, small towel in a bowl. Pour hot — not boiling — water over the towel. Wring out the towel and lay it over your face. Use caution if you’re heating the water with a teapot or microwave. If the towel is too hot to hold in your hands, it’s too hot for your face. Let it cool for a few minutes. 2. Steam with a bowl You can also do a spa-like steam with a bowl and dry towel. Pour some clean, hot water in a large bowl and drape a towel over the back of your head. The towel will trap the steam in as you lean over the bowl and enjoy a mini sauna-like experience. Immediately after Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Your skin will be extra sensitive, so you don’t want to irritate it by rubbing with a towel. Apply a moisturizing cream or serum. The effects of your moisturizer or serum will be enhanced after a steam, so use something that nourishes. If you’re after younger looking skin, this is a great time to use an anti-aging cream. Massage your face. What better way to end a relaxing face steam than with a gentle face massage? Use your fingers to gently massage your forehead, cheeks, and neck using upward strokes. Unless you have oily or sensitive skin, you can use a bit of facial oil to enhance your massage.

Same Girl

A good commander of war knows when to retreat before striking the next day, and the ones who blindly and persistently try to win the war despite the odds would fall.

DANIEL NDIWAH

narrates how two friends ended up falling

for the same girl.

We were on our second KO beers at our kawaida local, Kwa Nyambura, chilling with the boys, Eric and Maxy. Of late, things seem not to be okay with Eric. Maxy and I had decided to give him some time to pick up his pieces so that he can talk to us when he is ready In our boy’s club, only Eric is hitched. Surprisingly, we have never been introduced. Eric had promised to introduce her to us when the right time comes. He had always postponed the introduction. Am sure he was not that sure about her. But again, Treasures are to be hidden. Maxy was always on dating site looking for someone he could date or hang out with.

63.

ON

THE

COUNTER

Everything started when Maxy had shown us this lady that he was planning to date and their plans were going on well. The first time he showed us Lila, the girl he met on tinder I was the only one who gave some compliment. Eric was taciturn on it, it seemed stilted, especially his facial expression on seeing the picture, but we could easily pass it on the drinks. As we continued to imbibe on our drinks, Eric asked Maxy how far he had gone with Lila. We were both curious to know. Eric had promised us to shed some light on what was bothering him after Maxy tells us about Lila. Maxy started: “Well, this is the right moment you are asking about her, tomorrow we will be having a night out with Lila.” That was followed by a toast and another ice cold- KO round on the table before he continued to explain on how they were fairing past Keyboard conversations. “I guess she should be ready for my proposal. Lila is such a beautiful young lady and I always feel the chemistry between us is very strong. “ Eric interrupted, "Bruuuh…How do you believe ladies from dating apps with all that is happening to men day in day out from such instances? Haven’t you watched Tinder swindler". Maxy answered him: Well, you see, I don't. But there is something different about Lila that I have not seen with any other woman. I just love her thoughts clarity, her beauty, her clarity of mind and the way she handles our conversation. She is different. And I always hope for the best. After tomorrow evening date we will meet with you guys for some brief introduction.

Eric at this time was left speechless. Knowing how much sprung our friend was. So, I asked him to just tell us what was bothering him. He just looked at us especially Maxy. He started: You see, I never want our friendship to be over anytime soon. 'Tumetoka mbali na tunaenda mbali' he stated after chugging his beer. His statement made us ever curious to know what's going on. Eric became very emotional. He looked heart broken. He could now gather all courage and tell us what was going on. He looked at Maxy and said: "Maxy, I know that b****, your so-called girlfriend, Lila more than you do. I met her late last year on the gram and went on to start a thing with her. I have never brought her to light, because we just fun around ever since she swindled me 130K. 'Our girlfriend' has been paying her dues ever since to avert a police case I had filed on her. You see, her real name is not Lila, she is Grace. Grace has been my 'girlfriend' close to four months now. She lied to you. The first time we saw her on your phone I was dumbstruck. That's why I reacted that way. I did not have any strength to tell you that at the moment. I felt so heart broken and low and also feared for the character development that was loading. "What!" Maxy interjected. It took some time for Maxy to sink that statement. From the moment, we vowed always to introduce our girlfriends to each other as soon as we start to date. At least, our friendship was not broken. Men are proud beings. A word of advice to the girls: find a guy who want to lay down his pride for you, instead of defending it.

If both guys are friends and from the same social circle, they ought to sit down and talk about it – you know, about who is going to strike and who is going to back off
