Little Everyday Luxuries....

In this issue, we’ve explored the awesomeness of little everyday luxuries. Starting with comfort food. It’s all about the food we love and why we love it. From understanding the benefits to the ease of preparation as magic happens in the kitchen with Mwanaidi Shishi. We have curated recipes that celebrate our favourite food, while offering tips on how to make it taste better. We’re leaning towards the latter in this issue, from checking in to INTI Restaurant for five-star services and first-class drinks to checking out some shiny bits of perfect lighting for a perfect Kitchen. But first we speak to sandra Banda, an expert on the subject, about what luxury kitchen lighting means and, where it’s headed and how it fits into the world of Interior design.

Cecilia Irene, a celebrated food stylist ad content creator, spills some bins about the modern world of content creation

Bottle service, it’s over to the people who create the feeling of opulence in the bar; read how to make simply cocktails using John Barr whisky, the Scottish way. Elsewhere, Daniel vibes with us about new men norms in house chores, Faith Rono dives into the Snap vibes on a dramatic twist of events as Jane meets the One. Danny meets Crazy Kennar on his journey into opening Instant Delicacies, a Dishy Joint in Juja as they dine in for some Fish Ugali. Enjoy the round up Luxe experience curated in a Kenyan touch. Dive in, then splash out- life’s too short not to spoil yourself with a few luxuries every now and again.

Needless to say, this issue is utterly jam packed and we hope you will enjoy it. If you haven’t followed us on social media, make sure to find us @DishyKenya and @DishyMagazine on Facebook. Until then, enjoy the read and have a wonderful Month. March ON

Healthy Eating CHALLENGES HEALTHY EATING AND

FOOD SECURITY

The ability of people to obtain healthy and nutritious foods is strongly linked to land use practices and policies. Healthy foods are more likely to be available in communities with broad-service stores and markets. When the only local food stores are chain-like convenience stores, healthy fresh foods are unlikely to be available. As farmland is replaced by development, it becomes harder for markets to obtain fresh produce. Without careful planning, locally-grown produce may not be available to Vermonters in the near future. The time is now to implement policies and practices to ensure an active and profitable agricultural future. Land use affects our health and access to healthy food. Studies have shown that people living in areas with more fresh food retailers and fewer convenience stores and fast-food restaurants have lower rates of obesity. Preservation of farmland is important to not only provide access fresh, local produce, but also for the economic and quality of life benefits it adds to a community. Farming brings money into the state economy each year and provides jobs for thousands of Kenyan residents. Land kept open by agriculture is a key component of the scenic beauty of our state, a major factor in why people choose to visit Kenya.

FAITH RONO

explains

the

snappy Love feeling

These ladies have been on my case ever since I told them about the beautiful encounter with Rishad. He honestly looked too good to be true and adding the fact that he just went mute after we waved goodbye, spoke volumes. I still had his card with me, contemplating time and again on whether I should make the call or should he find ways to get in touch. One thing for sure, am not a newbie in relationships and I have read vastly about women making the first move. I had already sent him a couple of texts in vain. That irked me for sure, just imagining that somebody’s son was reading my texts and turning a deaf ear on them. Only I & Peshy are currently single. Waiting for “The One”. Although many men have this notion about independent women, they should know the qualities women seek in heterosexual romantic partners, male friends, and men in general, are not all that different from what they seek in a friend. This makes sense: Any good relationship is built on some basic, down-toearth qualities. We don’t need partners who invest all their energy in trying to prove how strong, manly, masculine, macho, or heroic they are. We just want men who are willing to meet us where we are and treat us fairly and equitably — and are able to make sure that the romantic spark keeps burning.

Since there’s no reliable assessment that can predict whether someone is going to be a good match for you or not; no dating-site algorithm can accurately predict the human heart.

Eabl_kenya

Even when a potential partner brings all of the following qualities to a relationship, that's no guarantee that the two of you will have good "chemistry" or meet up at the right time for each of you to enter a new relationship. However, recognizing what we know that we need from the important people in our lives increases our “relationship quotient” so that we can at least be aware of areas worthy of enrichment prior to establishing a new romantic connection. The traits that we tend to value and need most from the men in our lives linger around moral integrity, relational sensitivity and satisfying intimacy. I believed Rishad was it for me so I decided to go for it and make that call, since the messages weren’t bearing fruits. It was the more realistic approach, which could find me incredibly settling. I opened my Snap beer, had a sip then proceeded to dial the number. Dead end. No reply after the first 2 attempts. I had nothing to lose at this moment so I dialed the last time which went unanswered too. All my hopes were now shredded. I had barely drowned myself in the last sip of my beer when a text came through. “This Rishad, I’m in a meeting, I will call you right Back.” It read. I hurriedly replied that it was okey, leaving my Identity as Jane, further explaining the meeting occurrence. I felt relieved. At least I wasn’t delusional on this and I felt some weight of my back. I stretched for another snap from the fridge, opened it and sat in bed smiling to myself. I was too much carried away to notice my phone was vibrating….it was him. ‘Rishad Dubai’ calling! To say the least, it felt exactly as being called into the interview room. This felt like it, He is the One. I took a long sip before picking the phone. “Hello…. I stammered” Tbc…

DOPE

CONVERSATIONS

In the world of savory street food, the name of the game is fast and convenient. And, of course, it has to be tasty. This is why both shawarma and burritos are such popular choices around the world. They are fast to prepare and neat and tidy to eat, which makes it the ideal street food! But from a distance, these two dishes may appear the same. In our DOPE CONVERSATION we vibe courtesy of ZESTA SAUCES as we highlight distinctions between shawarma and burrito, and which one is better? Whether it is the traditionally Arabic flavor in shawarma or the Latin flare of a burrito, your palate is sure to have a rich experience when a splash of Zesta is added.

SHAWARMA Shawarma is more predominant in Asian and Middle Eastern nations. It is basically thinly sliced meat roasted on a slowly turning spit or rotisserie. Various spices and often fat is added to the meat to make them tastier then served in a flatbread with vegetables, spices, and sauces inside. In shawarma meat takes center stage thus geared more toward meat lovers.

Vs BURRITOS Burritos are more prevalent in Latin American countries and just like shawarma there are few ingredients stashed in. Unlike Shawarma Burritos can be made with or without meat filling. Items such as beans, cooked rice, vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, etc. are far more common before these elements are rolled inside a wrap. Their versatility offers more relevance for vegans and vegetarians.

Ethics of Fibbing

Lying to friends and family members may seem like a quick way to lose their trust, but this may not always be the case. Lying for the right reasons can actually strengthen some social bonds, if only it’s done right. Grab your Ballantines Whisky and drift with me on this… Fake it till you make it is definitely one of the gospel scriptures ruling the current decade. It is our instinct to blame the media for our poor perceptions of reality and the ways in which we compare ourselves to idealistic standards. At one time, that all may have been true. It may have been the airbrushed models in magazines and the seemingly flawless lifestyles of celebrities that made us feel like boring little trolls in comparison. However, we are now our own worst enemies because of the way we've distorted and manipulated our social media presentations. We're creating a culture of self-comparison that did not previously exist. Not only that, but we compare ourselves to false images, just as altered as those of the airbrushed models. With Tik Tok and IG pushing the narrative to the core, it has become even more difficult to differentiate authenticity of people online But what exactly are the "right" reasons for lying? You may ask. So, after the first date in Jiweke Tavern with Jane, she kept singing praises on how much of a gentle man I am. That was subsequently followed by numerous date nights and movie nights, you know. Gentle Man things. There is something about ladies nowadays and moving in ‘too soon’. Well, I am not complaining about this, for obvious reasons, but it kinda fractures our lifestyle. I know my masculine frame is on-point, but again Jane was already occupying that ‘me’ space. I am never the man to dig into or pester women about their lives but something seemed a miss in her. Jane literally stayed in comfy 4 days a week in the name of working Online. Her mannerism, vibe, eloquence and generally how she carries herself was top notch. More of a cool kid from some elite family, raised in some leafy suburbs. Her IG handle complemented on this. Oozing class. Anyone would get baited at the first glance.

I can’t deny that her IG played a very crucial part to where we are today. I occasionally pop into her IG stories and status throw in some love emojis. This weekend she had invited her pal over to my crib so to avoid the whole awkward stares and introductions I went to meet Allan at our usual joint- Jiweke. Kama kawaida, one ballantines botti real-quick as we rant about jobo issues. Four cocktail down, It was checking in. I know am tipsy when that phone urge kicks in. I was just perusing IG when I bumped into this beautiful pic of Jane and her pal captioned “Nights like these in Dubai”. Weh! I even rubbed my eyes to ensure am seeing crystal. “Am sure jet lag must be killing you hun “the second part of the caption read before tagging her pal. Everything in that picture was my house, and to make it worse they just chose my corner bar spot. This assured my suspicions. She was all about that delusional IG lifestyle and setting standards for her followers, hence, the many pics in the morning. It was all about social fibbing. I had one heavy chug before showing Allan. You could tell his thoughts from his face. ‘Mkuu Iza ‘he said stammered before handing me over a double shot. “Although, some might argue that engaging in selective sharing online isn't lying — it's just selfpreservation, Someone has to explain something!” I roared as I stormed off.

“Do you know a woman can tell it all from a guy's drink?

CREATIVITY

BEYOND

IMAGINATIONS

Creative Culture

Creativity is the oxygen in marketing – it is important in all aspects, from how we understand and collaborate with the people who consume, to making sense of brand challenges, and coming up with memorable solutions which will build our brands, as well as landing a sale. Marketers need to deploy creativity against strategic opportunities, a broad audience and balancing long-term and sales-generating activity. While there is no doubt Kenya’s creatives are over working, some are just a niche higher. Brands are now appreciating more creative arts that make their brands stand out and in a manner beyond mediocrity. Communication is constantly evolving, and while some have chosen to stick by the traditional ways some companies in Kenya are leveling their game, showing a lot of creative prowess in how they are coping to their markets.

In this column we reflect on the outstanding marketing artworks in that month.we pick our top 3 most creative posts on Social media , that have wow’ed us and subject them to a contest where you choose and pick the best designs / concepts plus their caption.

WELLNESS

Dry

Skin

Therapy

Dealing with dry, dehydrated skin? Don’t despair. There’s a skin care routine for that! Maybe your skin feels tight, scaly, flaky, or a combination of all three. We’ve got you covered. The following skin care routine and recommendations for dry skin can leave your skin happy, hydrated, and glowing. By now, you have probably figured out that when it comes to skincare, one routine doesn’t fit all skin types. Different skin types require different regimes and care. So, if you are reading this and you have dry skin, you’re in the right track to finding a skincare routine that fits your skin. Today we highlight skincare routine for dry skin. The number one goal should be to boost moisture. Therefore, you will want to build a routine that’s full of nourishing, moisture-rich skincare products. Additionally, to combat dry, tight skin, you’ll want to also focus on ingredients that fortify your skin’s lipid barrier, which helps keep moisture in and acne-causing bacteria out. Here is a guide on how to build a skincare routine for dry skin that works: Cleanse Start every skincare regimen with cleansing. The right formula cleanses your skin without stripping essential, healthy oils. For dry skin, incorporate cream or lotion cleansers into your skincare routine. This is because these cleaners are formulated with emollients such as glycerin or Shea butter which wipe away impurities while also hydrating the skin.

exfoliating helps get rid of dead skin cells and makes your skin smooth and soft. Always use a moisturizing face scrub or exfoliator to clean your face. Moisturize Immediately after washing your face, massage it with a moisturizer. This is the most crucial step in caring for dry skin. Always apply moisturizer within 3 minutes of washing your face and on damp skin. This helps your skin stay hydrated throughout the day or night, depending on the time of day you do your skincare routine. Pick a hydrating moisturizer that does not contain any irritants. Go for a product that contains hydrating ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerine, and B vitamins. Eye Cream Since the under-eye area is more sensitive than others, it’s a lot drier, too. To protect the delicate area, be sure to use a rich eye cream every night before bed. Sunscreen

Exfoliate

If you are doing your skincare routine in the morning, don’t forget sunscreen! Sun protection Include exfoliation into your skincare routine for is crucial for preventing UV damage and keeping dry skin, no more than twice a week. Dry skin is your skin healthy. Sunscreen is arguably the best especially prone to peeling so anti-aging product you can use. A wellformulated one will leave your skin moisturized and soft while offering sufficient sun protection

2. Do you bring leftovers home? how much food goes in the trash? Yes, I carry my leftovers home to have them for breakfast the following day mostly. I don’t like throwing food so I try to ensure most if not all the food does not go to the trash 3. What is your most manly quality? I’m quite controlling in the kitchen, I’ll definitely micro manage someone if we are cooking together. 4. Roughly how much do you spend on food each week? What I do mostly is cook from home so it’s quite hard to estimate. Although I always put aside ksh.2000 for a nice day out over the weekend 5. What do your friends and family think of your life as an influencer? In the beginning no one actually understood what it is exactly I do but with time they started to understand and they have been so supportive since. My family is my spinal cord I would not be where I am without them.

ON

THE

COUNTER

Housework gender gap? So, what is keeping him from doing household chores? What’s keeping him from getting the dinner ready every night? When it comes to household chores, the division of labour is still gendered, with women shouldering most responsibilities. Which means that while she has a partner who supports her decision to work, she still is left waging a lonely war on most of the unpaid chores, when she gets home. But as

DANIEL NDHIWAH

explains how women

are pushing this too far

It was a match day between Manchester United and Arsenal. This is unarguably one of the most watched game in the world. Tony and Marto decided to watch it in some place where there were just few people so they could still continue with their chat as they have some beers. Tony is strategically positioned where he could see everyone getting in the wellstructured liquor. It was running late but they decided to preserved a seat for Kevin.

51.

ON

THE

COUNTER

They have always met at that joint, ‘Mpaka Che Booze place’. Tony realizes that Kevin has always been late and some other few physical changes. So they just decided to ask him why because they have noticed that for a while. They don’t get into conversation that first. They had come with a line of attack of just biting around the bush to get to that part of the conversation. Kevin now sips his first Kenya Original Cider beer. He doesn’t utter any word. He just joins Tony and Marto’s conversation by just listening. ‘’hey man, you look stressed?’’ ‘’No, am good, just feeling worn out” Kevin replies. ‘’Is it Tina or what is it?” tunajua mambo yako. Kevin gave them that fake laughter and said not really. As the three guys continued chatting, some Pengting mamaa came close to Kevin and was inquiring about his friends. There was an instant silent on the table. Just few seconds after the beautiful curvy lady left, Marto interjected and said, ‘’We know what you love Kevin. Si mamaa ako Kejani?’’ (your girlfriend is at home) This was an eccentric time for Kevin to break the silence. Kevin started. You see man, I supposed life would be better with having Tina around. I thought I could save a lot of money and maybe have a woman around. But things are totally different for now. She is the reason why am always late here. She has really changed a lot but I cannot just wake up and ask her to leave.

I thought we would combine some effort to make our life better. I even miss the time she could only visit once in a while or just the Weekendi. Tina is always lounging around just in Netflix from series to series. If not this, napping all day. I never knew I could get some courage to tell you some stuff. But you guys are my boyz. Things are thick in that house. Of late am even the one always cooking. This relationship is turning out so toxic majamaa. You guys understand what they say about toxicity, if not sorted it either kills you or kills both. Me nimechoka fam. Did I even mention I have been doing literally all the chores? Tony interjects, “but you are the man!’’ Kevin continues: Tony, you don’t dig it, do you! Do you know the worst part of it? Today she broke some peculiar news to me. She is three months in the family way. Am not sure she will ever change. Or maybe I should give her some little time to change. I understand the whole vibe about ‘Ball inataka…” (Pregnancy cravings) but this is pushing my limits too far. I could always recall the times Marto told me not to host her for it was too early for that. I thought you were just saying that to scare me. I really wish I would have listened and let Tina be paying visit once in a while. Tony and Marto stops Kevin. “Wadau lets cheers to the times ahead of this…” Marto proposed as they chugged the KO cider. Marto and Tony could now comfort Kevin promising him that they will always be there. They couldn’t bare losing yet their other friend to depression
