Plastic Plague NO TIME TO
WASTE
The wildlife impact of plastic pollution is staggering. Much of the planet is swimming in discarded plastic, which is harming animal and possibly human health. Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues, as rapidly increasing production of disposable plastic products overwhelms the world’s ability to deal with them. Many of these products, such as plastic bags and food wrappers, have a lifespan of mere minutes to hours, yet they may persist in the environment for hundreds of years because of the additives they contain that can extend the life of products to at least 400 years to break down. Millions of animals are killed by plastics every year, from birds to fish to land-based animals. Mistaking the trash for food, many land-based animals also eat plastic, suffering obstructions, stomach ruptures and starvation. There are no definitive numbers on how many individual animals eat plastic or die as a result. But ingestion has been documented in at least 150 species, and data suggest its incidence is rising. These toxic chemicals in plastic make their way up the food chain and onto our plates also harming human beings as they are ingested.

Plastic trash has become so ubiquitous it has prompted efforts to write a global treaty negotiated by the United Nations. The solution is to prevent plastic waste from entering the land, rivers and seas in the first place. This could be accomplished with improved waste management systems and recycling, and reduction in manufacturing of unnecessary single-use plastics. #Nisisisote. #TogetherforNature

Ju
g n i y a st S l Hands down, the first date is the nicest part of dating. It's exciting, romantic, and just plain wonderful. Everything regarding a first date is pure bliss as
FAITH RONO
describes what happened during the hook-up.
Hello…I stammered I felt as if a dream had just come true for me. I had no idea what was going through Rishad's head. I was conflicted about what he thought of me. Imagine getting two missed calls from a woman she had never met. What would he think of me if he met me? I could admit that I loved his voice on phone. I wanted to listen more than I did talking. He started off by apologizing to me which made me feel reposed. I was curious to know what he does so I could know how to handle him. First impression matters, as they say, dress how you want to be addressed. As a result, a location where we could meet was discussed as part of the chat. I was speechless when he complimented me on the phone. I'd even forgotten about the missed calls I'd left on his phone. He finally hung up after several lengthy phone calls. I immediately dialed Peshy's number to tell her what had happened and our arrangements with Rishad. I assured her that I would keep her informed at all times and she was over the moon for me. I was to meet Rishad the next day and I called my ‘winglady’ Peshy asking for a little of her time while briefing her about meeting ‘le’mans’. We met at our local for some few Snap beer cocktails. I had dressed to impress; the short little dress accentuated my curves, the laced diamond purse blended perfectly and complimented my shadow diamond necklace and the pinned earrings.
Eabl_kenya
In the middle of our drinks, Rishad called and I bid my friend goodbye but promised to keep in touch. I was getting nervous by the minute as Rishad proposed a classy joint for our meetup. By his choice of the venue I could tell he had a good taste. He appeared dapper; Timeless and classic would describe his style. He oozed confidence as he strutted in his well-cut cloth. Did I mention, he was smelling heavenly as well? He was an easy person being around and he made me feel comfortable. As we continued taking over bites and sips, he paused and asked what I was doing for a living. "I work at an NGO around Westlands and this is my second year" I told him. While he never divulged a lot on what he did for a living, he intimated that he was in a car import business. And since mimi si polisi I didn’t bother asking further. As the night wore on, he asked whether we could actually date. I was over the moon but asked for some time hinting at a possible yes. My long lashes couldn’t hide my excitement. As the conversation got juicier, so was the night. He offered to drop me home. I could easily walk to my place but I mean, he had pulled up in black classy SUV, a BMW X6. His beast of a machine suddenly experienced some mechanical issues. As he tried to salvage the situation while profusely apologizing, I meekly offered him to wait in the house before his ‘private mechanic’ showed up. He obliged and I could sense he was relieved as we locked eyes walking towards the gate. TBC...

DOPE
CONVERSATIONS
Think of jam not as a topping, but as a seasoning for bread. Like a croupier shuffling cards, an elaborate mosaic or two lovers’ interlinked fingers, the aim is to weave elements together in a way that is elegant, balanced and mutually reinforcing. In our DOPE CONVERSATION vibe courtesy of ZESTA SAUCES, we highlight which toast spread is best: One with the blended mix of jam and butter or just jam only- because both give the bread snack their intrusive bursts of real flavour. Toast topped with a spread should always be cut diagonally, so you can eat in, from the sharp end, without smearing the spread all over your cheeks.
TOAST WITH JAM The jam aesthetics of whole-fruit jams not only appeal to the heart, but they play some delish havoc in the mouth. The rich fruity taste can be felt in every bite. Bringing out the full blow taste that is complemented by the rich taste of the bread. How much you want to spread is preferential but generally speaking, the less your jam looks like it ever had contact with the toast, the better.
Vs TOAST WITH JAM & BUTTER The toast needs to be spread liberally with butter, but the jam should be a 1-2mm screed across the top. No pools, no lumps, no hillocks. If you overdo it, the jam will create an overbearingly sweet mouthful. The flavour should be butter, underpinned by toast, the jam a restrained spritz of fruity sweetness up top. The two just blend in perfectly.

#MAKEITMONKEY
“Monkey Shoulder” is actually a historical name for a strain injury that men would get from milling malted barley by hand. Not, as some might think, a reference to having a monkey on your shoulder (which has some alcoholism connotations). The Monkey Shoulder brand was developed in 2005 to service a perceived demand for “fun-yet-premium” scotch whisky spirits. The original blended scotch whisky was produced from the three primary William Grant & Sons distilleries (Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie), but the explosion in popularity of Monkey Shoulder in the American market required WG&S to pull in product from other distilleries under their control to meet production demands. The result is a smooth, creamy, supple and very malty Scotch which works superbly well neat, over ice, or in whisky cocktails (where it really excels). The scotch is created for maximum approachability. The Scottish malt whisky brand has been successful in bringing Scotch whisky to a younger generation of drinkers.
MONKEY SHOULDER: Unlike many whisky brands, which are made to be drunk straight or on the rocks,Monkey Shoulder was designed as a mixing spirit.
PERFECT CRAFT. MADE TO BE MIXED Unlike many whisky brands, which are made to be drunk straight or on the rocks, Monkey Shoulder was designed as a mixing spirit. This is whisky you drink while playing a game. Twister? Trouble? Tetris or Trivial Pursuit if you’re feeling brainy. This is whisky you drink when you get home after a date, preferably with your date. Some say it tastes just like riding bareback on the wild moors of Scotland with a flame haired maiden on Christmas morning. Others agree it tastes like 007 wearing a tuxedo wetsuit

JUST

Bird-dogging
When you do catch someone lying to you, it’s usually a real whopper. These are the kinds of lies that are so insulting to be the recipient that it’s hard to think straight. In these moments, you want to keep the conversation constructive, without letting the liar off the hook, which is a difficult thing to pull off. Grab your Ballantines Whisky and drift with DANIEL NDIWAH on this as we decode the deceit I had no idea of what to do. But for sure I was exorbitantly emotional. I couldn’t allow my feelings to get the better of me, so I decided to go back to the bar. I had that sarcastic laughter and couldn't help but wonder how she pulled that stunt on me. I felt vanquished. Allan stared at me as I staggered back with a blunt face that questioned why I was back. I ordered a ballantine’s double on the rocks then proceeded to engage him on what had engulfed my mind. "I think she had been fibbing all along, she's a fake. What would she tell me after she already discovered I know this?" Allan jokingly answered, "You will still fall for her again" This is the time that I had started to relate everything that happened on our first date. But how did she manage all this? We continued imbibing. Allan is the type of guy, know it all. While some of his suggestions sound blathered, they are always working and I so I followed suit on this. We went back to her Instagram handle and started scrolling and analyzing each picture. She was so creative! I mean, her Instagram could tell it all, well curated and eye aesthetic. The biggest question was how she managed to lie and how many people had fallen for her fables. Allan had a plan by now. We had to be DCIs for a moment. The curiosity in me I wanted to know everything about Jane. Following the old sage, show me your friends and I will tell who you are, her friend (the one she had invited) was our gate way to her gimmicks. Part of our plan was hooking up Allan with Jane's friend. It sounded solid. After some forethought at the joint, I was calm enough to go home with a straight face. As always, Allan saw me off with a parting double shot before I drove off. I reached the crib feeling a little tipsy but still managed to join the girls for a few drinks. Jane welcomed me well, a warm hug followed by a soft kiss. She was now all over me as we cuddled on the sofa.
I couldn't hide that I wasn't in my right mind. I was waiting for the best moment to ask her all what I had found out. I received a text from Allan. He asked me it was the right time for him to chat Jane's friend, Marya on the gram. Allan is good in flirting and could win any lady. I gave him the green light. Now Marya was sunk in texts smiling all through. She could even forget that we were there. So, we continued flirting with Jane as the night wore on. I had a lot to ask her but I was keen not to lay bare what I already know. Allan was keeping me in touch with their conversation. We skewed our alibi as a football conversation to keep it safe, whenever Jane popped in an incoming text . Marya accepted Allan's date. The night was cold and growing, and Marya decided to leave. Jane was to sleep inn. I was not done with her before she could go to the next 'target'. 'Bet imeingia!' I saw a text popping. They, Allana and Marya, were to meet the next day in one classy drinking joint next day. The next day, Allan finally met with Marya. According to Allan, every part of their conversation looked like it was cloned from our conversation. This was an art the two ladies had perfected. But am sure Allan did not feel what I felt on the first date since he could predict on all Marya's move unlike me. After their successful date, Allan texted me and we planned on when we can meet next and discuss the way forward. Tbc...

WANDERLUST
The Dragons' Hideout MT. SATIMA TRAIL
Life in the wild is wonderful. Hiking Mt. Satima through the Dragons Teeth passes as one of the closest illusions to a marvel movie. To say the least, It can easily pass as a kingdom in the series Game of Thrones. Known as Oldoinyo Lesatima, Mt Satima is the highest of the Aberdares peaks and the third highest mountain in Kenya. The Maasai name is Oldoinyo Lesatima, which has a variety of alternative spellings, such as Ol Donyo Le Satima, and means "mountain of the bull calf".

Why You Should be Here THE DRAGONS TEETH
1.Mt Satima is located just 3-hours’ drive from Nairobi 2.Mt Satima is part of the four dominant Aberdare ranges that one can hike, the rest being Elephant Hill, Rurimeria and Table Mountain 3.Mt Satima rises about 4,001m above sea level (ASL), making it the highest point in the Aberdare ranges 4.It’s a hiker’s paradise, the hiking cuts through the bogs and moorlands to the jaw-dropping out of this world sporadic rock formation dubbed “Dragon’s Teeth” and finally to Mt Satima summit. 5.The experience costs involve an entrance fee of Sh250 for Kenyan citizens and a guide fee of about Sh3,000 6.The Satima trail is the most gentle of all the Aberdare trails, with the route hugging the escarpments above undulating valleys and hills of rich alpine and sub-alpine flora 7.The various rock formations are large and dramatic, looking like the iron gates to the entrance to the dragon kingdoms 8.The views from the peak are spectacular. From every angle, you are surrounded by the various mountain ranges and valleys of the Aberdares

CREATIVITY
BEYOND
IMAGINATIONS
Creative Culture
Creativity is the oxygen in marketing – it is important in all aspects, from how we understand and collaborate with the people who consume, to making sense of brand challenges, and coming up with memorable solutions which will build our brands, as well as landing a sale. Marketers need to deploy creativity against strategic opportunities, a broad audience and balancing long-term and sales-generating activity. While there is no doubt Kenya’s creatives are over working, some are just a notch higher. Brands are now appreciating creative arts that make their brands stand out and in a manner beyond mediocrity. Communication is constantly evolving, and while some have chosen to stick by the traditional ways some companies in Kenya are leveling their game, showing a lot of creative prowess in how they are coping to their markets.
In this column we reflect on the outstanding marketing artworks in that month. We pick our top 3 most creative posts on Social media , that have wow’ed us and subject them to a contest where you choose and pick the best designs / concepts plus their caption.

WELLNESS
Get Glowing
People have used steam to relax and rejuvenate for hundreds or even thousands of years. We still love to steam up today, whether it’s in spas, saunas or simply a hot shower. Our Aesthetician IVY MULUKA takes us on a series on facial steaming, from its’ benefits to how to DIY at home If you've ever gotten a facial at a spa before, then you know that the moment when your esthetician wraps the steaming hot towel on your face is arguably one of the best and most relaxing feelings one can experience. It feels like a warm hug that simultaneously refreshes your skin. The reason that sensation feels so good is because it's similar to steaming your face. Whether done professionally or at home, when done correctly, steaming your face not only feels good, but the skincare benefits are plenty. Benefits of Steaming It’s cleansing Steam opens up your pores and helps loosen any buildup of dirt for a deeper cleanse. Opening up your pores also softens blackheads, making them easier to remove. It’s hydrating Steam hydrates the skin by helping to increase oil production, naturally moisturizing the face. It promotes circulation The combination of warm steam and an increase in perspiration dilates your blood vessels and increases circulation. This boost of blood flow nourishes your skin and delivers oxygen. The result is a natural, healthy glow.
It releases acne-causing bacteria and cells Opening up your pores allows the release of dead skin cells, bacteria, and other impurities that clog the pores and contribute to acne. It releases trapped sebum This naturally occurring oil is produced by the sebaceous glands to lubricate your skin and hair. When sebum gets trapped beneath your skin’s surface, it creates a breeding ground for bacteria and causes acne and blackheads. It helps your skin better absorb skin care products Steam increases trusted Source skin’s permeability, enabling it to better absorb topicals. This means you get more bang for your buck from skin care products applied after a steam. It promotes collagen and elastin The increased blood flow experienced during a steam facial promotes collagen and elastin production. This results in firmer, younger-looking skin. It’s soothing The feeling of warm steam on your face is relaxing. You can add some soothing scents using herbs or essential oils for aromatherapy to take your steam session to a whole other level of calm!

Someone once told me to take care of myself first and make sure that I am doing well and in that way, I shall be able to care for others. 3. Do you bring leftovers home? How much food goes in the trash? I barely have any leftovers but when I do, they come home with me. I am very careful to avoid waste and my brothers help to clean up any food that's left over. It's only when I am by myself that there's a bit of waste. 4. What is your most manly quality? I really can do a lot of physically demanding things by myself, heavy lifting included. I do not classify myself as a delicate flower, more like a resilient acacia. 5. What do your friends and family think of your life as an influencer? The Blessed Way to go, cougar! An overwhelming majority of couples share similar ages. But some fight shy of the norm, and they may even have a better relationship. James opens up his new found love that has led to a more satisfying entanglement .
DANIEL NDIWAH
narrates
Yes! When you know how to decode hidden emotions, read body language, and spot a decent local, you can have a seat at our table will be able. Alex, James and I had been meeting in our local Pub near Rongai's Tuskys supermarket. Any beer lover will tell you, a pint in your local seats better than two in another non – staggering distance. The prices of the drink in our local club, Trenton, is favourable to us. Aside, the prices, this is home. 'Kukunywa na bill', Controlling the DSTV remote, Nyambura’s, our waitress, smile and the general VIP treatment that are among the many reasons we can’t miss our spots. This time, James had spotted a new joint and proposed we pay a visit.
55.
ON
THE
COUNTER
Alex was wondering how James could suddenly make a move to what looked a high-end club. I immediately presumed it was too "expensive" for the boys when I spotted some ‘Njugu and crisps’ on the table. Yes, it was one of those clubs. Since it’s James who had called the shot, we swinged by. Worried about the bills, James could calm Alex down and ascertained him that we are not going to 'piga duster' at the end of the day in case we fell short of the bills. Now Alex was relaxed but still looked curious. This was the first time we were out of our local. "Bill is on me, order what you want boys" Alex and I looked at each other as we ordered. We went for our usual, Kenya Original beer bucket. We had to start slow. James walked away to pick some anonymous call outside the bar. It was too noisy so we could just excuse him. Alex came close and asked me, "Rada ya Leo ni gani? We tujibambe maybe Jamo bet iliingia" (Today looks odd! Let's enjoy maybe James won a bet). Our conversation did not go beyond there because James was now back. We were both curious to ask James why he decided to take us there. It all felt different. We were so inclined in all the moves we made in that club. Everything seemed to be a next mistake. 3 beers down, Alex could no longer be calm. He softly implored why James could take us to such and expensive club. James was tipsy, he could now be open and started telling us what transpired to that: "So boys, you know you are my all-time friends and this is our fourth year together. I have been told that last time you came to my place you did not find me. Am sorry for not showing up in that football match with the kids and I believed you really had a good time. I know that the two of you have been meeting up in our joint and I have always been "busy"
He continued, " I feel sorry for capping on you guys, that I have been doing some academic writing after I lost my jobo. Well, I don't know if I can continue playing in the dark no more.” Jamo then ordered for another round of chilling K.O beer bucket. “Cheki wadau, I met this woman in that dating site we always talked about. We have been together for a while and she has now finally opened her wallet. I know, I knooow… he cut Alex short with an emotional speech about how he has seen love in another light. “I could now quench my obsession for cougars in her. I have always spent most of my time in her apartment in Kilimani. She does everything and pays all my bills. I have never shared it with anyone because I was afraid you could judge me. She was the one who called few minutes ago." Now, Alex and I would stop taking our drink and in dissatisfaction, we could look at him. “Mguys you are an official ‘Ben10’” Alex erupted in laughter before James continued: "You remember that woman who came in a Lexus 470 new model? That is the woman behind my current lifestyle. I feel like now this is the time to stop all this. What should I do? Alex and I stood there perturbed. We could now tell James not to worry about a thing and we would help him avoid that woman. James looked so much emotionally drained. We continued guzzling our beer and James could now smirk and happy we were not too quick to judge him after realizing he did all that for money.
While there’s no denying that cougars are slinking into the mainstream, there’s still an element of taboo surrounding these agespanning relationships.
