President’s message The more some people speak about the limits on human performance the more we hear of new records in all disciplines. We are reminded that it is impossible to hold back progress. Distance running is no different and 2017 was no exception. Records were broken regularly, throughout the year, proving that sport is one of the best ways for us to surpass our own limits. Marathons and distance race competitions brought forth several outstanding women’s performances. World records were broken by Joyciline Jepkosgei in Prague (10km, Half Marathon) and in Valencia (half marathon again) and by Mary Keitany in London where she set a new womens-only world record for the Marathon.

Lifetime Achievement award, all within a warm and friendly atmosphere. The 11th AIMS Symposium followed the next day and the programme closed with the Athens Marathon, the Authentic at the Panathenaic Stadium. The XXII World Congress of AIMS will be held on 6-8 September this coming year in Tallinn, Estonia at the time when the country itself celebrates its Centenary. This provides another opportunity to uplift both the social and competitive spirit of our sport in such a beautiful location. The Tallinn Marathon organisers are already well on their way towards hosting a great Congress. Paco Borao

The first AIMS Africa Conference was held in September 2017 in South Africa organised by the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. Many race organisers attended to share their experience and expertise on “How to build world class marathons and distance events in Africa”. ®

Best Marathon Runner Awards At the 5th annual Best Marathon Runner (BMR) Awards Gala held in Athens on 10 November Eliud Kipchoge and Mary Keitany were named as AIMS’ Best Marathon Runners of the year on behalf of its 430 member races spread throughout 112 countries and territories. Their outstanding achievements over the past year, including Mary Keitany’s new world record in a womenonly race of 2:17:01, set in the London Marathon, and Eliud Kipchoge’s world leading time of 2:03:32 in the BMW Berlin Marathon secured them the BMR Awards ahead of the winners of the 2017 World Championship Marathons Geoffrey Kirui and Rose Chelimo.

Eliud Kipchoge was unfortunately unable to attend the Gala to collect his award, which he had won for the third consecutive year. It was the fifth time Mary Keitany had been presented with an award by AIMS, equaling the number received by Paula Radcliffe. She was presented with the AIMS World Record award only a week earlier in recognition of her women’s-only Marathon world record. AIMS President Paco Borao said: “Eliud and Mary have truly set the standard in 2017. I am delighted to see their accomplishments recognised on behalf of our 430 members and sponsors in the home of the marathon in Athens.”

AIMS Green Award AIMS Social Award The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon took the AIMS Green Award for their commitment to environmentally friendly practices. For the 2016 event the entire carbon footprint was measured and offset to win climate neutral certification. 331 tons of CO2 was offset by supporting three local South African charity projects – Wonderbag, Reliance Compost and Basa Magogo. The 2017 race achieved zero waste to land-fill. Janet Welham, Race Director of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, said; “Our aim is to be a global leader in sustainability [and set] an example of how to achieve zero waste to landfill and measure one’s carbon footprint, how to reduce it and how to become a climate neutral event. We would like to thank AIMS for recognising our efforts with this award.”

The Maratón de las Flores Medellín won the AIMS Social Award in recognition of their support for social causes. In 2017 the race organisers supported a landmine charity, a race organised by a breast cancer charity and Pasos de Felicidad, a movement of young runners raising money for disadvantaged communities. Gustavo Orozco Posada, Race Director of the Maratón de las Flores Medellín said: “We feel very strongly about our social initiatives and we are delighted to receive the award.”

AIMS Marathon Symposium The 11th AIMS Marathon Symposium was held in Athens on 11 November with the theme: “Developing your race by developing the running market in your country”. Four speakers addressed this subject:

Lifetime Achievement Award Rosa Mota received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gala in recognition of her long career in distance running including victories in the 1988 Olympic Games, the 1987 and 1991 World Championships and the 1982, 1986 and 1990 European Championships Rosa first came to international attention in 1982 at the European Championships where she won the first official international championship marathon for women, staged on the classic course from Marathon to Athens, Greece.

In addition to the Olympic gold won in Seoul, South Korea she also won an Olympic bronze and many marathons around the world including Rotterdam, Chicago (twice), Tokyo, Boston (three times), Osaka and London. AIMS President Paco Borao said: “We are very happy to welcome Rosa back to Athens, the birthplace of the Marathon. Her achievements have been an inspiration to women and girls around the world for many years.”

Saso Belovski, business development manager of RunCzech, explained how loyalty programmes can contribute to the feeling of belonging to a running community whether through simple discounts, wider access to benefits or a ‘fast-track’ facility. The concept is supported by other initiatives such as: providing detailed ranking systems relating to age and professions to broaden the range of ‘winners’, providing a physical facility – a ‘Running Mall’ at which runners can socialise; and offering corporate races. By such means a new category of people has emerged who define themselves as people who are not runners but do run. Elana Meyer described how the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon both enhances social cohesion and delivers social change by involving both running and non-running communities. Runners raise funds for charitable causes through the marathon. Local community groups are involved in the organisation – particularly in the efforts to deliver a carbon-neutral event with zero waste to landfill. The symbolism of a flame lit on Robben Island – where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned – and carried to the race start resonated in

AIMS Children’s Series The final AIMS Children’s Series event of 2017 was held on 26 November in Khanivali, a small village about 80km north of Mumbai. This year the distance was reduced from 4km to 2km and the previous out-back course changed to become point-to-point. This allowed another 133 children from a nearby orphanage to be accommodated on the course. Most children run barefoot and the organisers had patched up the route with loose soil as best possible. There were three age groups both for boys and girls, the children being from grades 8, 9

and 10. A total of 610 registered and 550 participated on the day. All the children completed the race and many clocked impressive times. The fastest was 7:02 and the next only a second slower. All participants were given a finisher’s medal and a race T-shirt, a canvas school bag, a warm sweater, a warm cap, a summer cap, a pair of canvas shoes (measured individually for size), two pairs of socks, 2 notebooks, 8 ball-point pens, 4 packets of biscuits, a Rubik’s cube, a Frisbee, some hard candy and chocolates, a geometry set, a lunch box and a water bottle. All the boys were given a cricket bat and ball and the girls a pair of badminton rackets and a shuttle. Everyone was provided with breakfast before they assembled for the race and lunch afterwards including ice cream for dessert.

Every child also had their picture taken after the race and a copy was printed out and handed over to them on the spot. The winners received gold, silver or bronze medals, a certificate and a Casio watch for boys and a Timex watch for girls. Race director Amit Sheth had recruited a team of 40 volunteers from the Borivalli National Park Green Runners in Mumbai and from the Inner Wheel Club of Bombay Sea Coast. Following lunch there was a party of epic proportions where the children, teachers and organising staff joined in a dance competition. More prizes (solar lamps and watches) were handed out to children who danced well.

Paco Borao explained the emergence of Valencia, host to the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships on 24 March, as a ‘City of Running’. The physical advantage of the former bed of the Turia River now being an elongated green space snaking through the centre of Valencia was a highly advantageous starting point. This now incorporates a point-to-point 5km measured race route and links to other runner-friendly routes throughout the city. The fast, flat courses of both the Marathon and Half Marathon – run a month apart – have boosted entries locally, nationally and internationally. Makis Asimakopoulos, race director of Athens Marathon – the Authentic, outlined how the success of the Athens Marathon had been capitalised upon by adding a Half Marathon to the calendar and staging a series of 10km races in cities spread all over the country. These were developed and presented using a standard template to enhance a feeling of familiarity and ‘ease of use’ by people who did not think of themselves as runners. The success of Athens Marathon has been used in this way to feed back to itself through these supporting events. We have had a phenomenal year of great performances and off the chart audiences. The head to head competitions, the battles fought and the records set, have once again excited and entertained and have demonstrated the worldwide reach and continued popularity of our sport. The marathons at this summer’s World championships, which took over the streets of central London for a day, were prime examples of the attractiveness of our sport when presented at its best on a world stage. The last seven kilometres of the women’s race in particular turned into an intriguing duel between four runners for three medals which will live long in the memory. This year road running has also sparkled thanks to a series of outstanding world record runs from 10km up to the marathon. The most recent of these performances, over the half marathon distance, took place in the city which next March will host the IAAF/Trinidad Alfonso World Half

The four 2017 IAAF World Athletics Series events in Kampala, Nassau, Nairobi and London attracted entries from around 3800 athletes, representing over 200 countries. Of these participants, in London alone around 40 countries won medals and 60 produced top-8 place finalists, making our World Championships the most international sporting event of the year.

The World Half Marathon organisers claim that their event will be run on Valencia’s fastest ever course. Given the city hosted a world record only a few months ago that is a bold claim.

– an experience that few other sports can offer. Organisers are expecting 15,000 runners to compete in the half marathon while younger runners will be able to take part in races designed especially for children.

The local organising committee has further improved the route of the annual event for the championships race to make it totally flat and without any sharp curves. The route combines the best features of the annual Valencia Marathon and Valencia Half Marathon and showcases many of the city’s iconic landmarks – including the renowned City of Arts and Sciences. The course will also be well protected from the wind as the race will predominantly take place on streets in the centre of town.

With established names from the track, marathon specialists and rising stars of the road all regularly clashing at this distance the half marathon is arguably the most exciting road-running event at the moment. It has enjoyed a revival in recent years, especially among women. Three world records for the distance were set in 2017 alone, the most recent of which came in Valencia when Joyciline Jepkosgei took one second off her own world record with 1:04:51. Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor secured back-to-back world half marathon titles by winning hard-fought races in 2014 and 2016. Such was the quality of those races that five-time winner and world record-holder Zersenay Tadese just missed out on a medal in Copenhagen in 2014 while multiple world and Olympic champion Mo Farah had to settle for bronze in Cardiff in 2016.

The timing of the races – with the women’s race starting at 17.05 and the men’s at 17:30 – will offer cooler and drier temperatures while the influx of the public and large TV audiences around the world at that time will create an ideal atmosphere. Valencia can boast some of the fastest half-marathon performances in history and is also no stranger to global athletics events. The 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships were staged here and it is the second time that the World Half Marathon Championships has been held in Spain following the 1996 edition in Palma de Mallorca.

Although the entry lists won’t be finalised until much nearer the time many of the world’s top distance runners have already expressed their interest in competing in Valencia. In addition to the individual races, where there is $30,000 at stake for each of the winners, there are also team titles on offer. If recent editions are anything to go by the team contest will be a three-way battle between Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea. But the finishing order is harder to predict – there is always room for an upset.

There has been a Moscow Marathon for decades but since a re-launch five years ago the new race has become the largest and most significant marathon in Russia. Participation has increased fourfold since 2013 and the crowds watching have burgeoned. In 2017 more than 20,000 people from 71 countries took part in the race. The Promsvyazbank Moscow Marathon is run in the heart of the city. The race logo – a heart made up of two geotags symbolising the start and finish – alludes to this. The race starts and finishes within the precincts of the renovated “Luzhniki” Olympic complex which will host the 2018 Football World Cup. The Marathon course runs along the embankments of the Moskva River, along the Garden Ring, the Crimean Bridge, the Boulevard

Under the Kremlin walls Ring, Tverskaya Street and under the walls of the Kremlin. Extensive reconstruction in the city in the last two years has benefitted the race: sidewalks in the centre were widened and houses were restored. The course’s appeal is noted even by locals. Fewer streets are blocked on the main public holidays than during the Marathon. On the run participants get spectacular views and can

admire Moscow’s world-famous sights, including the White House, Moscow City business centre, four of Stalin’s seven ‘wedding cake’ skyscrapers, the Bolshoi Theatre, the FSB building, the Polytechnic Museum, the Kremlin and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The race course connects the past and future of the city in one picturesque panorama. The Marathon offers runners an excursion around the Russian capital for only 2000 rubles (about 30 euros) topped by getting a medal at the finish line. It’s the best way to get to know Moscow and fall in love with it, even if you think you already know the city. Russia has had a running boom in the last few years: from 2009 to 2014 the number of Russian finishers in the world’s 12 largest marathons (including Paris, London, Chicago, Boston, Berlin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Athens) increased four times over. Russian runners entering foreign events and competition among race organisers in Russia have led to a rise in organisational standards. Russians are familiar with the best races of the world and have become picky – nudging domestic organisers to constantly improve and develop their services. invitation to a pasta party. At the finish everyone receives a medal, a blanket, water and fruit. Afterwards they are offered hot food. There are 13 fluid and food stations along the course and two points with energy gels. 24 ambulances are standing by during the event. Split times are given for every 5 km. Data from the timing check-points are displayed on the online page of preliminary results and using a mobile app. Friends and relatives of runners can follow the competition using their mobile phones. Through services like these Promsvyazbank Moscow Marathon offers an experience comparable to the most successful European races. Moscow winters are cold but the summers are hot with temperatures reaching 30ºC and above. September is the ideal time for running in Moscow and the best month to visit the Russian capital. The average air temperature during the Marathon for the last five years is 16ºC (2013 was coldest with 11ºC and 2015 hottest with 20ºC). Race day is usually clear or a bit cloudy and rain is unlikely. Nearly everyone runs in T-shirts and shorts.

Marathon and 10km runners previously started together but due to increasing numbers the starts were separated for the last edition, starting in different parts of the Olympic complex but coming together for a common finish. Start times were phased to allow 10km runners to stay on for the finish of the marathon. Both races welcome amateur runners and elite Russian athletes. Because of the current IAAF suspension of the All-Russia Athletics Federation foreign elite runners are unable to take part in Russian races. Disabled people and charity runners are welcomed. The Marathon’s official charity, the Arithmetic of Good foundation, raises funds for educational programmes for orphans. The handbikers and

wheelchair racers start 15 minutes before the Marathon runners and complete the same course. Moscow is the only marathon in Russia which holds a dedicated race for athletes with disabilities. Good organisation and high-quality medals do not alone make a race successful. What really creates a good impression are the people with whom runners have contact throughout their stay – from receiving their bib numbers at the Expo until the moment they leave the finish zone. Volunteering has been one of the key areas of growth for the Marathon. Over the last five years the organisers have managed to attract, train and rally a team of 800 people. A runner's island haunt Views that will stay in the memory for a lifetime

Emil Zatopek once said, ‘If you want to win something, run the 100m. If you want to experience something, run a marathon.’ For the last 24 years runners have been visiting the tiny island of Rottnest, 19km off the coast of Perth, to experience the pain and pleasure of the Marathon. The island is a protected nature reserve and home to the quokka – a small wallaby-like marsupial and supposedly ‘the happiest animal in the world’.

Rottnest Island covers 19 square kilometres and is reached by a 30-minute ferry ride. Runners can come over days in advance or cross on race day at 05.30. There is a permanent population of around 200 people but also 500,000 visitors annually. White-sand beaches and secluded coves surround the island. either a four-lap Marathon, a two-lap Half Marathon, a single-lap 10km or a 5km. The course has been designed to ensure runners take in the magical scenery and experience everything the island has to offer. It’s undulating and showcases views that will stay in the memory for a lifetime. The race starts in Heritage Common and heads out across the salt lakes towards Armstrong Bay, where runners are confronted with an ocean view that must be seen to be believed. The race circumnavigates the island to ensure nothing has been missed. The course is tough but you lose yourself in the moment. In all of the 24 years that the race has been run bagpipes begin to play just before the start of the marathon. The ethereal sound of Amazing Grace sets the scene for the day ahead. In the inaugural Rottnest Marathon of October 1994 72 runners finished and a plaque with all their names was placed in the Rottnest Hotel, then known as the Quokka Arms. Ray Brown took the men’s race in 2:35:50 and visiting New Zealander Nyla Carroll took the women’s in 2:52:20.

The race has forged its own bit of mythology. Legend has it that 70 years ago Harry McFordyce, an immigrant prisoner on Rottnest, escaped justice and attempted to run off the island. On the fourth time around McFordyce succumbed to dehydration and died. If you run the marathon you will see and hear the ghost of Harry playing his bagpipes throughout the race. Two bagpipers stand atop Armstrong Bay playing the haunting melodies. On the last lap, at the foot of Harry’s Hill, you are given a gold coin which you must carry up the hill and deposit in Harry’s tub. Failure to do this will result in cramps, dehydration and a possible DNF imposed on you by Harry’s ghost.

Bagpipes aren’t the only historical aspect of this island race. The Dutch mariner Samuel Volckertzoon wrote of sighting a “wild cat" on Rottnest Island in 1658. In 1696 Willem de Vlamingh mistook them for giant rats and

named the island "Rotte nest". You will see thousands of these native marsupials around the island and although being taken as rats back in the 1600s actually look like very small kangaroos. The tiny creature now features prominently on every finisher’s medal. The Rottnest Running Festival has a distance for everyone. The course is marshalled by some of Western Australia’s greatest runners and friendliest volunteers along with army cadets who are posted at all the water stations. The uniformed cadets have been visiting the island for years to offer aid to the runners. At the finish it has become a custom to share the tales of the day at the Rottnest Hotel – the drinking hole for both locals and tourists alike. Many friendships have been made and many stories have been told but there is one underlying theme that underpins them all: ‘I came, I saw, I conquered’. The Rottnest Running Festival is a unique event on a unique island. The 25th anniversary race is on 21 October 2018 and celebrations will be bigger and better than ever."

Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon, Slovenia 29 October 2017

Not many races in the world can boast that they have over one percent of the population of the country as participants. Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon can make that proud claim. Slovenia has a population of two million people. It is surrounded, except for a very short coastline on the Adriatic Sea, by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Ljubljana, the national capital, has 280,000 inhabitants. The Ljubljana Marathon attracts 25,000 runners to its various events – and although quite a lot of them are from outside Slovenia this equates to 1.2% of the country’s population. It is not surprising that the day of the race is seen by the whole nation as a “racing holiday”. Life in the capital is put on hold for the day as the city unites and cheers on runners throughout the city centre. On the last Sunday in October the streets of Ljubljana are traditionally flooded with runners and spectators who together create the unforgettable atmosphere of the Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon. What started in 1996 as a local event with no more than 673 participants has in 22 years become an internationally recognised race with people from 55 countries and five continents competing in a 10km run, a half-marathon and the marathon. These main races are supported by a rich programme for joggers and children. Both the start and the finish of all races are in the centre of Ljubljana with the starting line on
