IAAF/Trinidad Alfonso World Half Marathon Championships Valencia, Spain · 24 March 2018 WOMEN’S RACE The world record for a women-only half marathon was improved by 14 seconds to 1:06:11 writes Phil Minshull. It wasn’t beaten by race favourite Joyciline Jepkosgei though, who owns the mixedrace standard of 1:04:51, but by Ethiopia’s Netsanet Gudeta. Gudeta made her decisive move in the 14th kilometre to shake off both Jepkosgei and her little-known Kenyan compatriot Pauline Kamulu and stride on to victory – and a personal best by 75 seconds. A 13-strong group, consisting of three Kenyan runners and the entire Ethiopian and Bahrain women’s squads, flew through the first 3km in 9:20 and reached 5km in 15:39. The Kenyan trio led with the others sheltering behind them. Between 7–8km Jepkosgei and Kamulu started to surge and dropped all but Gudeta, fellow Ethiopian Meseret Belete and Bahrain’s Asian record holder Eunice Chumba.

Passing 10km in 31:38, with Belete starting to struggle and an 11-second gap behind, the leading quartette were getting stronger with every stride. Gudeta showed more regularly at the front and then made her move. Initially Kamulu gave chase but Gudeta passed 15km four seconds clear of her with Jepkosgei a further four seconds down. Gudeta looked supremely relaxed as she consistently turned the screw. She passed through 20km (1:02:53) a full 40 seconds clear of Kamulu. As she turned the corner into the finishing straight alongside Valencia’s landmark Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe the clock had not yet reached 66 minutes. Gudeta dug deep and sprinted over the final 150m to take the title and the US$50,000 world record bonus. Behind her Jepkosgei found her second wind over the last 3km and edged past Kamulu with a kilometre to go.

MEN’S RACE The men didn’t run as close to record performances as the women but there was no absence of drama as Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor romped away over the final 6km to secure his third successive title writes Phil Minshull. A sluggish early pace (14:31 at 5km) as the wind started to pick up led to a relatively modest finishing time. What will be remembered though is the 13:01 split that Kamworor threw in between 15–20km to rip the field apart. The huge initial pack of almost 70 runners gradually strung out but the pace remained modest and at 10km, reached in 29:28, there were 30 men still together at the front, battling a headwind. Changing direction over the next 5km afforded the runners some protection from the elements – with rain also starting to fall – as Kamworor began to feature more prominently at the head of the race. He led the pack at 15km (44:13) but it was looking increasingly unlikely that the one-hour barrier would be breached. For the next 2km Kamworor slowly wound up the pace as a prelude to his decisive move. At 17km he put in a brutal burst of acceleration and a sustained surge which took him well clear of the field. Behind him Bahrain’s Abraham Cheroben was working hard to move through to second place. He briefly closed the gap on Kamworor to around 10 seconds at 19km before the leader surged

again. The defending champion passed 20km 14 seconds clear of Valencia Half Marathon course record holder Cheroben and then pulled further away over the final kilometre. With 200m to go it looked as though Kamworor would break the hour but he then decided to enjoy his moment in the spotlight as he continued his streak of having taken a distance running world title every year since 2014. Down the finishing straight, his beaming smile stretched broadly across his face, he started blowing kisses to the crowd. No one could begrudge him his chance to celebrate what had been a tactically perfect race. In 31st place multiple world champion on the track Bernard Lagat didn’t succeed in reducing his recent USA over-40 best of 1:02:00 but at 43 years and 102 days no one older than him has ever run faster than his finishing time of 1:02:16.

Split Half Marathon, Croatia 25 February 2018

Running through time The Split Half Marathon started off as a local race for regional race enthusiasts but a redesign of the course in 2015 has led to it becoming Croatia’s biggest halfmarathon. The race is a fully volunteer-based project and as a result has the heart and spirit of the local community behind it. Split is an ancient Mediterranean city nested centrally on the Adriatic coastline. It offers a unique mixture of historical experiences: the Roman Palace, built by the Emperor Diocletian who selected the nicest place in all of the

Empire to build his retirement home; French influences as administered by General Marmont; and Austro-Hungarian heritage derived from Split being one of the Hapsburg Empire’s Adriatic ports. Modern edifices are intertwined with these historical elements in a unique manner best explained by describing the city as having been ‘born of the Palace’. The race starts and finishes just outside the Palace on the central part of Riva – the pedestrian promenade between the Marina and the south side of the Palace also known as Split’s living room. From Riva the course leads you along Marmont Street, the main shopping

You then step forward in time into a modern setting when you join the road which serves as the main entrance to the city. before you turn on the overpass and head back again. On reaching the city’s newest skyscraper you turn on to a smaller road which takes you into LORA – the largest naval port in the region. You get to run through the restricted naval area and see the Croatian navy’s ships in the harbour. Then it’s on to the Hajduk stadium where, in addition to soccer legends, you will stand in the footsteps of thousands of ULTRA festival DJ stars. After one circuit around the soccer field in one of most attractive football stadiums in the world the course takes you into Marjan Forest Park – the lungs of the city. First you enjoy the shade of the north side but the real pleasure comes as you circle onto the south side where you run with high cliffs on your right and spectacular views of the beaches below you. The sea, scattered with islands, lies to your left. From here you pass by the Marina and the west part of Split port to begin the finishing stretch back where you started. Regardless of your running goals the course will amaze you more than once during the race. Supporters accompanying you can follow your progress as ‘real time’ chip readings record you passing through checkpoints at the start, every 5km split and the finish.

The city has also gained worldwide recognition as a holiday destination. It offers entertainment, unique wining and dining experiences and excellent and diverse accommodation. Split Half Marathon is not only a great race but also a great vacation opportunity.

In support of the main race the organisers offer an ‘End Polio’ 5km run alongside the half marathon and children’s races (ages 6–15) the day before dedicated to fighting cancer. The “Marathon City” Expo is held in a sports hall about a kilometre from the start/finish where you pick up your bib and can enjoy some carboloading at the Tommy Pasta Party. Among the expo exhibitor stands you can see how the half marathon has developed over the years. Split’s “House of Sports” features some of the world’s well-known sportsmen and women from Split. Split is known as a city of sport because it has the highest percentage of world top athletes in proportion to the size of its population.

Neither snowstorms nor winter chills managed to keep this year’s 18th Split Half Marathon from happening, a manifestation of sporting and humanitarian character organised by the Marjan Marathon Club. Over 2000 participants from 40 countries took part. The leading runners reflected the character of the race as a regional attraction, coming from Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro. Maintaining a tradition Lake Biwa has the longest history of any Marathon in Japan. It has throughout been a prestigious international competition and marked its 73rd anniversary this year. The number of mass marathons being held in Japan increases year by year but the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon maintains its solid tradition as being exclusively a men's international elite marathon race. The top invited athletes from home and abroad are selected from among those who have run times as fast as 2:03:00. All participants must have met a qualifying time of under 2:30:00 at least once within the past three years. The tough criteria for elite runners ensures that the race automatically qualifies for an IAAF gold label but it also makes the Lake Biwa race a dream arena for recreational runners. Approximately 300 “elite” runners aged from 20–49 participated in the most recent edition by meeting the 2:30 standard. Prior to the last Tokyo Olympic Games held in 1964 the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon was designated as a rehearsal and a selection race. Towards that end the

Lakeside setting for one of world’s fastest races venue was temporarily switched to Tokyo and its National Stadium for two consecutive years. The achievements of the Japanese runners in the Tokyo Olympic Games greatly contributed to the popularity of the marathon and this has continued to date. Big name marathon runners have competed in the race such as Tokyo Olympic champion Abebe Bikila, 1972 Olympic Champion Frank Shorter and the Japanese legend Toshihiko Seko. compete in the global arena from the Lake Biwa race. Lake Biwa has been designated as one of the selection races for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Marathon. It is keenly hoped that a new Japanese star will emerge from the Lake Biwa race. In 1964 NHK (the Japan Broadcasting Corporation) broadcasted the race live in its entirety for the first time. Today it is viewed in some 100 countries and regions around the world via the NHK World Premium network. The course is renowned for its scenic location which commands a splendid view of the shores of Lake Biwa – the largest freshwater lake in Japan. In contrast to most marathons, taking place in big cities, the unique course is blessed with the riches of nature and has proved popular among athletes from home and abroad. In some places the course narrows but this increases the runners’ sense of speed and heightens their awareness of the congratulatory cheers of devoted local marathon fans close by on the sidelines. The flat course also makes it favourable for setting records. The host city Otsu, in Shiga prefecture, is often cited as the “Lake Country”. It is an historic, attractive city not far from ancient Kyoto and Osaka. Citizens of Otsu eagerly look forward to the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon as an event that heralds the arrival of spring in the Lake Country. The marathon takes place on public roads and through scenery of breathtaking natural beauty. The organising committee of the race is committed to the Lake Biwa environmental conservation campaign and works closely with local government. Both Otsu City and Shiga Prefecture are eco-friendly communities and place much emphasis on tackling environmental issues in a cooperative manner. The Lake Biwa environmental conservation campaign was launched 11 years ago and has taken root firmly among citizens and their communities. On race day local environmental groups put up booths to showcase their appreciation of the ‘Mother Lake’ and carry a strong message to visiting marathon fans. In an effort to familiarise local children with the sport the race organises a popular 1000m event within the stadium while the marathon is taking place. The intention is to get local children acquainted with the marathons at early stage in their lives. Storm Felix was the main opponent for all runners competing in the 28th edition of the race. For the first time, and only because of the bad weather, the start of the Half Marathon for non-elite runners and for the 7km Fun Run was not high up on the roadway of the 25 de Abril Bridge. The organisers were forced to change the start and the first part of the course. So thousands of national and international runners were not crossing the Bridge â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is the iconic feature of the race. The Bridge spans the Tagus 70m above the surface of the River. The elite course was not affected by this change, lying wholly on the north side of the River. Five-time world Half Marathon Champion

Zersenay Tadese was counting on taking his fourth victory in the Lisbon Half Marathon and was the most obvious candidate for the 50,000 Euro bonus that the organisation made available for a new world record. Tadese set the current world record (58:23) on this course back in 2010 and ran the second fastest-ever time here in 2011. Winner Erick Kiptanui (1:00.05), from Kenya, in his debut said: “I can run under one hour and if I return to Lisbon I’m sure I will run faster than today, because this is a great course.” The women started 15 minutes before the men. Three of them had already run under 68 minutes: Kenyans Pasalia Chepkorir Kipkoech and Magdalyne Masai and Ethiopian Belaynesh

Oljira. But the winner was none of these as Etagegne Woldu came out on top in a relatively slow but closely-contested race. On the same course, but a few minutes earlier, the CTT Wheelchair Race took place. World record holder David Weir (GBR) ‘towed’ the race at a particularly fast pace from the beginning for an untroubled win. The seven-time London Marathon winner set the world record on this course last year and confirmed during the postrace press conference that he likes the city and particularly the organisation of the race. The women's race was contested right up to the finish line because the winner did not know that she was disputing the victory with a rival; she thought that she was up against a man. Both Cristina Vanessa and Margriet Van den Broek finished with the same time (58:43). At the first turn the Brazilian – who was given the verdict – had more than 500m advantage over the Dutch athlete. But turning into a headwind, with gusts of up to 50km per hour, the gap began to close until they arrived at the finish wheel-to wheel.

Despite the last-minute change for the mass race the organisation was gratified by the

number of participants – around 30.000 of them. “Lisbon is a wonderful city, and everyone wants to visit it. I think most foreign athletes came in spite of the bad weather because they came for the purpose of running,” said race director Carlos Moia. The sports representative of the Government, João Paulo Rebelo, and city mayor representatives from both Almada (on the south side of the river) and Lisbon all confirmed the importance of the event for both cities. There was general recognition of the exemplary way the organisation had handled all the contingencies in the successful implementation of “Plan B”. Portuguese winners Bruno Paixão and Filomena Costa praised the race organisers for the way they reacted to the setbacks and minimised the inconvenience. “Although the elite athletes’ course was not affected it was important to feel that the environment was happy for everyone,” said Costa. That such bad weather required the course for this emblematic race to be changed ended up being the reason why the race was covered by so many international media outlets. The Half Marathon course in Lisbon is famous for being flat and fast. Many of the amateur athletes come to Lisbon to beat their own personal record. Many are also traveling with their families to combine the race with a visit to the city. It is almost certain that the good weather will return in 2019. Perhaps the ‘news storm’ has aroused the interest of more international runners. More than 7000 foreign runners participated this year and even more are expected, coming from all over the world, for the next race set for 17 March 2019.

Zurich Marató de Barcelona, Spain 11 March 2018 The Avenue Mª Cristina in Barcelona this year was the scene of great celebration for the 40th anniversary edition of the Zurich Marató de Barcelona. The race was the culmination of a weekend dedicated to sport. The sports Expo exceeded its previous record attendance with more than 70,000 visitors in two days. The Breakfast Run by MRW, with its 2000 bib numbers snapped up weeks ago, was run the day before the Marathon over a course consisting of the last four kilometres of the 1992 Olympic Marathon route. The stage was set on race morning by the Caixabank children’s race as 650 participants performed on the Avenue Mª Cristina before the start of the marathon.

A party atmosphere

More than 17,000 runners of 87 different nationalities gathered at 08.30 under a cloudy sky and a temperature of 12ºC. In total 46% of them were foreigners and came from countries as diverse as Indonesia, South Korea, USA, Ecuador and Armenia. They enjoyed a completely urban race circuit. The Zurich Marathon of Barcelona offers five-star service to its runners and this has been recognised by European Athletics with the five-star label that it has granted to the race. It is recognition of the sixteen water stations along the route; of the corresponding medical and physiotherapy services; of the many pace group leaders; of the convenience of having the start and the finish of the race at the same point; of hosting an Expo which is a leader in its sector in southern Europe; of the 57 animation points which ensure that the race has a party atmosphere throughout the entire route. For the ordinary runner the Zurich Marató de Barcelona course is fast and has definite tourist appeal. These are two of the main elements that define Barcelona’s marathon. The race also takes participants to lesser-known but no less attractive sights of Barcelona such as the Calatrava Bridge, built as part of the new infrastructure for the 1992 Olympics, and the Agbar Tower – a huge modernist office block known for its nocturnal lighting. Looking ahead This new race, to be held in the centre of St Petersburg, is organised by the ‘Running Community’ team that has successfully conducted the Moscow Marathon (Russia’s largest) and the two largest half-marathons in the country: the Moscow Half Marathon and the Luzhniki Half Marathon, also in Moscow. St Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and the northernmost city in the world with more than a million people. It receives more tourist visitors than Moscow and is rated one of Europe’s leading destinations – among the top 25 in the world. Fyodor Dostoevsky called Petersburg “the most intentional city”. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, the last Russian Tsar and the first emperor of the Russian Empire. St Petersburg was conceived partly in the image of such cities as Venice and Amsterdam. For centuries the best architects of the world have adhered to the high style of the city. Today its image is determined by architectural ensembles and straight streets, spacious squares and monumental sculptures, gardens and parks, rivers and canals, embankments and bridges. St Petersburg is the cultural capital of Russia. Almost all the historical centre’s structures and artefacts are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The SPB Half Marathon race course passes by most of them. Organisers also offer a 10km race. The start and finish of both distances are in Palace Square in front of the Winter Palace, in which the Hermitage Museum is located. Participants of the half marathon run along the main street of the city, Nevsky Prospekt, and over the famous bridges of St. Petersburg. From the race course athletes will see views of world famous sights: Kazan Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Rostral Columns, the Admiralty and St. Isaac's Cathedral. Meia Maratona Internacional do Rio 2018 Rio Half Marathon, Brazil 19 August 2018 The most beautiful race in the country, the Rio Half Marathon, is run along the South Zone of the “Cidade Maravilhosa”, starting at São Conrado and finishing beside Flamengo Beach. Along the course lie the most beautiful and famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting Copacabana. It will be the 22nd edition of the event, which brings together 20,000 runners from all over the country and from abroad. Throughout its history the race has attracted some of the world’s most accomplished distance runners including Kenya’s Geofrey Mutai, champion of the Boston, Berlin and New York marathons. In 2016 Brazilian runners reclaimed the top of the podium in the men's and women's races with victories from Giovani Santos and Joziane Cardoso. Japanese summers are generally hot and humid and offer very poor conditions for running marathons. But Sapporo, on the far side of the North Island of Hokkaido, enjoys a more temperate climate and hosts the only full distance marathon to take place in summer. In 1987 only 439 runners entered the race but by 2016 it had expanded entries to 20,000.

The race starts with a countdown using the digital clock of the landmark Sapporo TV Tower. Runners pass through the green campus of Hokkaido University, then by the former Hokkaido Government red-brick office building, an important cultural property of the country.

Japanese elite athletes as well as domestic and overseas amateur runners participate in the race. Last year 519 foreign entrants from 22 countries and regions took part.

Apart from the marathon, which is open to runners who can complete the distance within five hours, there is also a 12.1km fun run, which is subject to a 1 hour 45 minute time limit.

Running out of the dark

Unique distance running event helps integrate visually impaired people Xiqiao is a town in China’s Guandong province known for its efforts to achieve ecological balance. Outside of the city is a forest park around Xiqiao mountain. This location has provided the stage for a remarkable new initiative: the Xiqiao Mountain Blind Half Marathon. It is China’s first charitable marathon especially for visually impaired people. The aim is to provide opportunities for visually impaired people to get outdoors and ‘run out of the dark’. It acts as a vehicle by which the media passes on the message of disability awareness. At an individual level the marathon offers a means to rekindle hope, recover beliefs and goals and promote physical and mental health. It also expands runners’ social circle as they establish relationships with escort guides which help their integration into society. As they do so sighted people with whom they come into contact become advocates for groups disadvantaged in this way. Starting with only seven blind runners in 2016 the second event on 19 March 2017 attracted 154 blind runners and 184 escort guides from 40 cities of 19 provinces. Among them was Qi Shun, world record holder and Gold medalist in the Paralympic Games. There were 78 blind runners in the Half Marathon, 49 in the 3km run and 27 in the 6km. Of all starters 99% finished and runner satisfaction rated 99%. One-third of participants came from outside Guangdong Province. Supporting events were integrated around the running including a concert, a forum on visual impairment running and a food festival. The blind half marathon has reached millions through a public welfare platform for national

crowdfunding. This has increased overall funds by 10%. The event is oriented towards the national public interest. The organising committee covers the cost of transportation, accommodation and catering for all the participants and staff. All surpluses are donated to relevant public organisations. A special voice-controlled running app has been developed which makes running more convenient for the visually impaired. This has helped blind runners to train three times weekly for at least 45 minutes and doubled the time spent running outdoors. On the mountain itself the expansion of barrierfree facilities and services have attracted 10 times as many blind people to visit Xiqiao Mountain throughout the year. running and increased the number of escort guides available to support them three times over. Although the Xiqiao Mountain Blind Half Marathon targets visual impaired runners and escort guides it attracts thousands of spectators who come to Xiqiao Mountain for the race and for sightseeing. Government entities coordinate the event by securing the site and providing security and medical services. Foshan Chaoma Cultural Activity Planning Co. Ltd. is responsible for delivering the event, including receiving and entertaining the participants. Athletic and other associations located throughout China recruit runners to sign up and help in managing the event. Many provincial and national TV stations and network media promote the Xiqiao Mountain Marathon and help to attract investment. It is China’s first and only marathon purposefully designed for blind runners, with the route fully meeting their special needs. The Half Marathon partly competes with publicinterest activities for the blind but media attention, exposure and return are much greater for running events than for general activities

and the message is carried more widely. Through being a running event specially designed for the blind Xiqiao offers broader accessibility to barrier-free sport. Government provides 40% of the funding, 30% comes from online and offline sponsorship by local enterprises, TV and network media. The remaining 30% is from charitable donations and crowdfunding.

Xiqiao Mountain Half Marathon has created two new records: one is “Chinese blind groups running a half marathon” (by the numbers of participants); the other is “China’s first guide dog leading the blind to finish a half marathon”. Xiqiao Mountain Blind Half Marathon is in the running for “China’s Best Charity Event” Award. It has been nominated as one of China’s top 10 activities for the blind. Through the advocacy of Qi Shun and the prominent platform that the race provides millions of visually impaired people are motivated to go out and take up running. It is one of the sports that is most beneficial to them and is fast becoming vastly more accessible. Marathon greats The first marathon runner to be widely known, and whose fame lasted down the years, was Spiridon Louis. He won the marathon event in the inaugural Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896.

Winner of first modern Olympic marathon

No other marathon runner’s name came to widespread public notice until Dorando Pietri was disqualified in the 1908 London Olympic Games and had victory dramatically denied to him. The Marathon was something new in 1896. Nothing like it had been seen in the Ancient Olympics at which the longest distance contested was no more than 5km. The French philologist and classicist Michel Bréal proposed the idea of a long-distance race, specifically from the town of Marathon to the purpose-built Panathanaikos Stadium in Athens, to his friend Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic Games. It was to commemorate the legendary run supposedly made in 490BC by the soldier-messenger Pheidippides to inform the authorities in Athens of the Athenian victory over the Persian army on the Plain of Marathon. According historians recording their versions centuries later he did this, gasping “rejoice – we conquer”, and then dropped dead. Unlikely as history but with powerful romantic appeal Pheidippides’ death run from Marathon to Athens was incorporated into a poem by Robert Browning and this accounts for the currency it had at the time de Coubertin was attempting to resurrect the Olympic Games for the modern era. Once it was known that a race over such a long distance – approximately 40km – was to be included in the Olympic programme the Greeks decided that an earlier race was needed to see which runners would be best at tackling this new kind of challenge. In fact there were two: the first qualifying race was the first ever marathon. It was held on 22 March and won by Charilaos Vasilakos in 3 hours 18 minutes. Louis took part in the second trial held two weeks later – only one week before the Olympic Marathon was held. Spiridon Louis was born on 12 January 1873 in the town of Marousi, now a suburb in northern Athens. Louis was a ‘water carrier’: his father sold mineral water in Athens and he helped in transporting it. Louis had done his military service between 1893–1895 and served under a Colonel Papadiamantopoulos. Papadiamantopoulos became one of the main organisers of the Olympic Marathon. He would act as starter and effectively serve as the race referee. It was he who, knowing of Louis’ running ability, had encouraged him to run the second trial. It could even be speculated that the Colonel set up the second trial specifically as a means of getting Louis into the Greek team. Eighteen runners gathered at Marathon Bridge for the start of the Olympic Marathon: 13 Greeks and five foreigners. Albin Lermusiaux, a Frenchman who had earlier placed third in the 1500m, took the early lead. Louis lagged but, taking refreshment as he passed through the

Spiridon Louis village of Pikermi, declared he would overtake all those in front. Lermusiaux was slowing and at 26km the Australian Edwin Flack, who had won the 800m and 1500m races, took over the lead. Louis began slowly to close in on Flack and overtook him at 33km (he withdrew at 37km). The Stadium crowd was first informed that Flack was ahead but when Louis overtook him a messenger was sent out by the police escorting the runners to deliver the welcome news that a Greek was now leading. The crowd, previously denied a Greek victory in all the events of the athletics programme, enthusiastically chanted “Hellene, Hellene!” As Louis entered the stadium the crowd erupted with joy as Crown Prince Constantine and Prince George ran the final lap with him. Louis’ victory, in 2:58:50, was rapturously received: “the King rose from his seat and congratulated him most warmly on his success. Some of the King’s aides-de-camp and several members of the Committee went so far as to kiss and embrace the victor, who finally was carried in triumph to the retiring room.” Two more Greek runners followed but Spiridon Belokas, who finished third, was disqualified after having been found to have taken a ride during the race. The Hungarian Gyula Kellner took his place. The King is supposed to have offered Louis any reward he wanted but Louis could only think of a donkey-drawn cart to help him with the watercarrying. He was offered many other gifts ranging from jewelry to free shaves for life from a local barber. He went back to Marousi with the new donkey cart and continued his quiet

life, never competing in any other running event. He worked as a farmer and later as a policeman. Forty years after his victory Louis momentarily stepped back into the limelight. He was invited as guest of honour to the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. He was standard-bearer for the Greek team during the opening ceremonies and was received by Adolf Hitler: “The Greek peasant Spiridon Louis, winner of the first Olympic Marathon in 1896, handed the Führer an olive branch plucked from Mount Olympus.” Louis died on 26 March 1940, some months before the Italian Army invaded Greece. He earlier recalled his historic victory: “…it still appears to me in my memory like a dream … Twigs and flowers were raining down on me. Everybody was calling out my name and throwing their hats in the air.” Louis is buried in the local cemetery in Marousi. Many sports clubs, both in Greece and abroad, still carry his name. The main stadium for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games was named after him as well as the road passing by outside (Spyros Louis Avenue) on which the AIMS Headquarters is located. A silver cup donated by Michel Bréal and given to Louis for his Olympic victory sold for £541,250 ($860,000) at Christie’s in London on 18 April 2012, breaking the auction record for Olympic memorabilia. It is just 15cm tall and was offered for sale at Christie’s by Louis’ grandson. The successful buyer was the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The cup is displayed at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Athens, and open to public view.

The International Mountain running season starts in June with three major WMRA events: On 2 June Zelezniki (SLO) will host the World Masters Mountain Running Championships. The traditional “Ratitovec race” hosted the World Cup race in 2015 and the tough 12km long course with more than 1200m elevation gain will be an excellent challenge for the Masters. Team scoring will be three members per country. Teams with only two runners will be officially placed after all the three-member teams are scored. Starting from 2019 men and women will run the same course up to age 54 and categories starting at 55 will run a shorter distance. Two weeks later young runners will gather in Lanzada (ITA) for the International Mountain Running Youth Cup in which 16- and 17-yearolds will tackle an up-down 4km loop course. Teams are expected from 15 countries. The Polish town of Karpacz will host the World Mountain Running Long Distance Championships at the end of June. Sniezka (1605m). The highest peak of the “Giant

mountains” was the venue in 2013 but run on completely different trails and with a different start/finish location. Male and female runners will face a 36km long course with 2100m of ascent and descent over two different laps, both reaching the Sniezka summit and dropping down to the charming town centre. On 16 September Andorra will host an international mountain running event for the first time. The town of Canillo attracts thousands of skiers in winter and hikers and bikers in the summertime. The World’s best mountain runners from about 35 countries are expected to contest the Championships. Juniors will run a 7km course and seniors 12km, the same for both males and females, both finishing at the 2540m high summit. The International Mountain Running Championships will be organised for the first time in a European capital city. Skopje (MKD), with its surrounding Vodno mountain, will offer challenging loop courses to the best European mountain runners. Juniors will run the 6km loop with 300m of ascent and descent once and seniors twice.

WMRA Council annual meeting Meeting in Monaco on 13–14 January the Council decided that: • prize money will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers at the 2018 World Mountain Running Championships. • a pilot ranking system will be introduced for the upcoming season to include WMRA World Cup events, Continental Championships, and World Championships (both traditional and long distance). Points are to be awarded on the basis of finishing positions. This programme will not initially

include awards or prize money. Council member Tomo Šarf said, “The ranking is not to determine the best athlete but the most successful athlete.” • The World Cup will feature five or six events with a long tradition and deep history in mountain running. Prize money will be awarded 10-deep equally to men and women. A professional agency will be retained to publish articles, conduct interviews and supply high-quality images.

• an Athletes Commission will be created to incorporate athletes’ experience. Feedback will be sought from an advisory group of 8–10 international mountain runners. • The WMRA International Youth Cup will become the WMRA International U18 Cup in line with IAAF terminology. Participants must be 16 or 17 in the year of competition. Male and female athletes will run the same course distance of approx. 4–5km.

IAU Members: Bolivia and Slovenia Athletes of the Year 2017 Several championships were held during 2017 including the 1st IAU Americas 100km Championship. World Best Performances were achieved over 6-hour, 12-hour and 24-hour races. There are 19 nominees for the Athletes of the Year 2017: 10 women and 9 men. Voting will be completed in the second half of March and results will be posted on the IAU website and on social media.

Bolivia became a member of IAU in February and Slovenia rejoined. Both countries have received invitations for the upcoming IAU Trail World Championship that will take place in Penyagolosa, Spain on 12 May following the IAU Championships.

Marathon movers “As a child I dreamed about exploring foreign places,” says Thom Gilligan. Born in a Boston suburb the Marathon became “engrained in my DNA”. He combined wanderlust with the marathon urge by forming Marathon Tours Inc and helped give shape to distance running as we know it today.

Gilligan’s isle Square, Cambridge and MT & T was beginning to look like a real business. The sport was also fast becoming a global phenomenon: Horst Milde had founded the Berlin Marathon in 1974; Anders Olsson started the Stockholm Marathon in 1979; Chris Brasher and John Disley created the London Marathon in 1981. Meanwhile I was trying to attract a clientele: runners who wanted to travel internationally. In the early 1980s New York Road Runners, under the leadership of Fred Lebow, led the charge to entice tour operators to market their event. These big-picture race directors were some of the founding fathers of AIMS. I approached all of them in the very early days to form relationships that have endured to the present.

My father took me to watch Johnny Kelley [in the Boston Marathon] just as his father took him to watch Clarence Demar. I set myself a goal of qualifying for the 1977 Boston Marathon. I didn’t succeed but still lined up in Hopkinton as a ‘bandit’ (without a bib number). Boston was one of the epicentres of the first running boom and I wanted to catch that wave.

Other tour operators began to see the business potential of specialising in this niche. In 1987 I thought that an association of running travel specialists could create a network of companies dedicated to the profession of managing travel for runners. I convinced about eight other founding members to form T.O.U.R.S., Tour Operators United for Runners. Our criteria restricted membership only to those who met industry standards for licensing and insurance and had a solid knowledge of the sport of running. Our membership now boasts 35 members in 24 countries.

If anyone told me in the mid-1970s that running would become the popular lifestyle activity that it is today I would never have believed them. But I always knew that I wanted to be in the travel business. In March 1973 BOAC (now British Airways) was hiring some ticket agents as staff at Logan Airport in Boston. I jumped at the chance to wear that uniform with its epaulettes. After three years at BOAC I landed a similar job with Air Canada hoping to move up to a sales position. Following airline cutbacks I worked in the marketing department for a tour wholesaler that packaged tours sold through retail outlets. The big break came when I was recruited to manage Able Travel, a travel agency startup just outside Boston. It was there that I put my first running package to paper in June 1977. One year later the overweight owner of the agency called me into his office to tell me I was spending too much time promoting trips to running events and that I should concentrate on attracting more traditional travel groups. During this 20-minute conversation I argued that there was strong potential in this

developing market but he fired me and offered me three weeks’ severance pay. So in October 1979, almost out of desperation, I formed Marathon Tours Inc. Without a business plan but armed with confidence and my MasterCard I put down a $534 deposit on a block of rooms at the Barbizon Plaza Hotel on West 57th Street in New York City. I gambled that I could convince a busload of runners and supporters to travel from Boston to run the fiveborough marathon. The sport was enjoying its first boom – fueled by competitive long-distance runners striving to better their time or post a Boston qualifier. Doing business as Marathon Tours & Travel I felt that the company could become the brand name in travel for runners. The profit from that full busload paid for my airline ticket to Bermuda to meet with Austin Mott, General Manager of the Elbow Beach Hotel there. The previous year I had brought over 100 runners and friends to the Bermuda Race Weekend. I convinced Austin to provide me with $1500 in marketing funds to promote his hotel as race headquarters. A total of 124 travelers from all over the East Coast flocked to this former British colony for a weekend of running and camaraderie. Marathon movers In December 1993 the Wall Street Journal caught wind of my promotional success. A feature article appeared on its front page highlighting this burgeoning generation of globetrotters hopscotching the planet in search of exotic marathons. I believed that we could create a marathon in Antarctica and said so for the article. Deposits flooded into the office from all over the world. We filled two vessels with 160 passengers for the two-week itinerary in January 1995 to King George Island – the site of the first international sporting event in the continent’s 500 million-year history.

enthusiastic participants pursuing finisher Tshirts and medals. Travel was becoming a mainstream activity in the runner’s lifestyle. The August 1993 edition of Travel Agent magazine, the travel industry’s largest trade journal, featured me on its cover. In its lengthy article I was quoted saying: ‘we have had a trip to every continent except Antarctica’. Within days of the publication reaching its audience I was contacted by the owner of Marine Expeditions, the pioneer of travel to the 7th continent. They leased Russian research vessels and converted them for tourism. So I went on reconnaissance to the bottom of the Earth in search of a venue for conducting a marathon and half-marathon.

It was the most expensive, most remote and most extreme trip yet. But it was our most successful offering to date. I was shocked: but I was convinced that we had tapped a new market of high-end clients looking for new bragging rights. During the post-race celebration four otherwise unrelated runners delighted in mentioning that they had just completed their goal of running a marathon on each of the seven continents. I immediately started the Seven Continents Club (SCC) to recognise those who attained this goal. A few years later we added a half-marathon division. There are now approximately 675 runners who have run a marathon on all seven continents. Exotic marathons have sprouted up almost everywhere. We created the inaugural Madagascar Marathon in 2017 and are constantly looking to create or partner with

unique destination events. Patagonia, Bhutan and Jerusalem are some recent additions to our race calendar. I estimate that travel by runners is a billiondollar-a-year industry. Completing the Abbott World Marathon Majors has become a popular goal for the international runner but gaining entry has become as much of a challenge as completing the event. After 40 years of this vocation the challenge to maintain a leadership role in destination marathoning remains. How can we continue to provide the best travel services and most rewarding experiences to the next generation of runners?

Dr David Martin (1 October 1939 – 28 February 2018) AIMS statistician, author and mentor of US Olympic team David Martin of Decatur, Georgia, died on 28 February after a long battle against Parkinson’s disease. Originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, he was the AIMS Statistician for more than 25 years. Dr. Martin ran cross-country while at university and graduated with B.S., M.S. in Education, and a PhD in Physiology. Looking back on this time in recent years he described how, as a young scientist, he found his path in life by combining enthusiasm, scientific enquiry and running, in pursuit of butterflies on high-altitude slopes in Mexico. He completed 29 marathons with a personal best time of 2:57:37. “Dr Dave” became Regents’ Professor Emeritus at Georgia State University, working at the Department of Health Sciences and specialising in pulmonary, cardiovascular, and exercise physiology. He brought this expertise to the study of running in a multi-disciplinary way, drawing on his experience as a runner himself, a coach, team leader, statistician and historian. He was also a visionary: he helped set up the USA’s first international women's marathon, organised by Avon Products in Atlanta in 1978, and acted as medical, scientific, and statistical consultant for the “Avon Running series” from 1978– 1984. His research and recommendations were published in The Avon Report on the Status of Women’s Distance Running (1980) which was instrumental in securing the inclusion of women in international championship events over 1500m that had formerly been an exclusively male preserve. Dr. Martin was an active member of USA Track & Field (marathon development chair), the American Physiological Society, the International Society of Olympic Historians, the Track and Field Writers of America, the Association de la Presse Sportive (AIPS), the Association of Track and Field Statisticians (chief compiler) and the International Marathon Medical Directors Association (IMMDA). 64

arranged the transfer of a huge collection of his documents and memorabilia (known as the Dr David Martin Collection) to the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running in Berlin.

He authored five books [The Marathon Footrace (1979), The High Jump Book (1987), Training Distance Runners (1991), The Olympic Marathon (2000), Better Training for Distance Runners (1997)] and over a hundred articles on athletics, exercise physiology and sports medicine. Alongside his teaching programme at Georgia State University he established what became the “Laboratory for Elite Athlete Performance” in a converted parking garage in downtown Atlanta. Among his subjects were global stars like Sebastian Coe and Steve Scott. From there came much of the research underpinning the global rise in standards in distance running. More specifically, in what he came to regard as one of his proudest achievements, he mentored the US team for the 2004 Athens Olympic Marathon on preparation, fluid intake, nutrition, the course, pace judgment, and tactics. His input was publicly recognised by silver medalist Meb Keflezighi and bronze medalist and Deena Kastor as crucial in helping them to outperform more favoured runners in the Athens heat. Martin confronted 10 years of physical debilitation with the resilience of a marathon runner. He continued to attend major marathons and AIMS Congresses until travel became impossible. He never stopped his research and writing. Forever planning ahead he

He touched and improved the lives of all who had the pleasure to meet him. He was a genuinely humble man who treated all he met with great respect and courtesy. Thank you, Dave, for your kindness, friendship and your lasting contribution to athletics.”

Ken Young 1942–2018

After receiving his Ph.D. in 1973 he went to work at University of Arizona in Tucson. From 1975 he started running on trails around Tucson including summiting the 9156-foot (2790m) Mount Lemmon. He then began to organise trail races and track and road ultras. Through his National Running Data Center he became the official record keeper of the USATF Long Distance Running Committee from 1979-1988. He also took a keen interest in the measurement and certification of running courses. When Alberto Salazar and Allison Roe set purported world records in the 1981 New York Marathon Ken pushed to certify the course distance. After a three-year campaign a re-measurement found the course to be 143m short. In the early 1990s these various interests coalesced in the publication of a statistics-heavy newsletter, The Analytical Distance Runner.

Runner, enthusiast and statistician who practically single-handedly revolutionised the way road running is tracked By Davy Crockett Ken Young passed away on 3 February at the age of 76 after a career as a runner, physicist and statistician. Although a talented runner (10:10 for two miles in high school) he quit his college cross-country team but took up running again at Arizona State University – inspired in part by a statistics-laden article on the health benefits of the sport.

In 2003 he banded together with other like-minded statisticians to establish the Association of Road Racing Statisticians (ARRS) which

While working on his Ph.D at the University of Chicago Ken joined the school’s track club where he met Ted Haydon, an assistant coach for the USA Olympic team. Haydon got Ken to help him with statistics for a handicap race which launched his lifelong passion for computer analysis of running data. He began to compare results from different distances to determine who the faster runners were and developed a model to predict race times. In 1973 he founded the National Running Data Center.

In 1999, at age 59, Ken moved to the small rural community of Petrolia near the Pacific coast in Northern California. From there maintained a system of ranking elite runners worldwide for headto-head competition which race directors used in deciding who to invite to their races. In 2015, at the age of 73, he was running 2:10 half marathons but after suffering injury in a fall he had to be satisfied with jogging pace.

Ken ran his first marathon in 1969. He experimented with ultras but mainly concentrated on marathons. He ran his best time of 2:25 in the 1974 Boston Marathon.

Under Coach Haydon’s guidance Ken targeted particular records. In 1972 he succeeded in setting a world indoor marathon record of 2:41:29 in Chicago. Later that year, on an outdoor track, he set American Records on separate occasions for 40 miles (4:08) and 50km (3:08).

Legendary athlete first to break the four-minute mile

Roger Bannister 1929–2018 Roger Bannister, who died aged 88 on 3 March, had already become an athlete of legendary status by the age of 25. He set a new world record for the mile on the Iffley Road track at Oxford University and in doing so ran the distance (1609.34m) in under four minutes (3:59.4) – breaking what was regarded as the most significant ‘barrier’ in world athletics He did it by using knowledge and insight from his medical studies and getting his friends Chris Brasher (who later co-founded the London Marathon) and Chris Chataway (who later became a UK Government Minister) to pace him. Brasher led for two laps, then Chataway continued, steady but fast, until just after the bell. Bannister then launched himself forward for a 59-second final lap. He had broken the nine-year old record of Sweden’s Gunder Hagg (4:01.4) but just over six weeks later the Australian John Landy, one of Bannister’s rivals for the first sub 4-minute time, ran 3:58. The two came head-to-head in the final of the mile at the empire (now Commonwealth) Games in August 1954 where Bannister ran to the same tactic: run as evenpaced as possible to save his strength for a powerful finishing 68

sprint to the line. Landy started strongly and worked up a lead of 10–15 metres by the third lap before Bannister started to haul him back. Running the last lap shoulder-to-shoulder on the final bend Bannister kicked away to win just a little later than planned. He ran just one more championship race, winning the European title later in August, before retiring from athletics. He went on to a distinguished medical career and focused his research on the autonomic nervous system, which unconsciously controls all the automatic response systems of the body. As chairman of the UK Sports Council (1971–74) he introduced a much more sensitive test for anabolic steroids. He was president of the International Council for Sport and Physical Recreation (1976–83), and served on many committees and advisory bodies. He also wrote for the British newspaper The Sunday Times and for Sports Illustrated. Bannister returned to the Iffley Road track (by then bearing his name) with the Olympic Torch in the build-up to the 2012 London Olympic Games. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2011 and revealed this in 2014 in a BBC interview after publishing his autobiography.

Over 6000 runners enjoyed near-perfect conditions for the two-day Al Mouj Muscat Marathon festival of running. Both male and female Marathon winners improved on last year’s winning times by 22 minutes while the women’s race was won by Muscat resident Brtukan Adeba Berihun (from Ethiopia). Winner for the past two years – Iceland’s Asta Parker – finished third. This seventh edition of the race attracted a record 6094 runners from 87 countries to take part in six different events. The festival started on 18 January with more than 2300 children taking to the streets of Oman’s capital for a Kids’ Marathon. Next day thousands more runners took part in the marathon, marathon relay, half-marathon, 10km and 5km charity fun run on behalf of the Oman Diabetes Association. The 684 half marathoners were led home by Jordan’s Mohammad Alkhwaldeh and Norway’s Anne Murvold. The men’s and women’s 10km was won by Omani runner Abdullah

Solomon Deksisa and Amane Gobena made it a double victory for Ethiopia winning in 2:09:34 and 2:25:49 in hot and humid conditions writes Phil Minshull. Deksisa was the men’s race favourite but remained steadfastly at the back of the leading pack. After a fast first 10km the pace eased up and a leading group of 11 men went through halfway in 64:28. The pace drifted further away from the course record until Joshua Kipkorir surged at 26km. put a 40m gap between himself and Akalnaw with Kipkorir drifting further back. Deksisa crossed the line 150m ahead of Akalnaw whose reward was a big personal best of 2:10:00 with Kipketer third in 2:10:30. Gobena, now 35, won her first marathon for three years to take her career record to eight wins from 22 starts. A four-strong group – Gobena, Kenya’s defending champion Bornes Kitur, and the Ethiopian pair of Shuko Genemo and Birke Debele were paced through halfway in a fast 1:12:27. Kitur then started to push hard and soon had only Gobena left for company. The two of them, with pacemaker Bernard Soi still in attendance, stayed together until 31km when Kitur started to struggle. Gobena made an impressive solo run for home and, although she tired slightly over the final 3km, recorded the second fastest winning time in all 15 editions of the Mumbai Marathon. Kitur followed her in, for her third podium finish in as many years, and broke her personal best by 13 seconds. Approximately 44,000 runners took to the roads in Mumbai for six different races over varying

distances in what has become one of Asia’s biggest massparticipation running events.
