AIMS Children’s Series

International Half Marathon

■ Longbien Marathon (VIE)

Quito, Ecuador: The chasquis were barefoot running messengers during the Inca civilisation. The second edition of the AIMS Children’s Series Quito was held in honour of these ancestral characters with the title ‘Chasquisito’.

After last year’s race the children, parents, media and others eagerly anticipated the event. Far more children applied but entries had to be capped at 1000. Fortunately, even those unable to register came to watch with their parents and joined in the fun.

On the morning of 17 June in the “southern tribune”, one the most deprived areas of the city, 1000 children from all over the country experienced an athletic festivity along with their parents and friends. The objective was to create future star athletes that could represent Ecuador internationally and the satisfaction of encouraging a healthy and productive lifestyle through running.

The children were very excited to receive a T-shirt, Cup, sports bag and other gifts provided by the sponsor company. Many of them received their first ever medals. Water was provided all around the course and the children received milk and juice at the finish. There were activities before and after the race such as face painting, warming up and dancing with cartoon characters and clowns.

Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan: On 28 July Erbil Marathon staged the 2018 AIMS Children’s series race. More than 1000 boys and girls aged from 6–13 ran in a 2km race which took place in the Sami Abdulrahman Park — the biggest park in Erbil (formerly an army base).

Several Government officials attended the ceremony including the deputy Governor of Erbil. There was coverage from local and national media agencies including the children’s channel JOJO MAMA who were event partners and aired several reports before and after the event to build awareness.

The 33 year-old Kenyan ran his own race, leading right from the start. He improved Dennis Kimetto’s mark of 2:02:57 set in the 2014 Berlin Marathon by 78 seconds. This is the biggest improvement in men’s marathon world record since 1967. Kipchoge finished nearly five minutes ahead of compatriot Amos Kipruto. Preceding world record holder Wilson Kipsang (2:03:23) was third. Gladys Cherono defended her women’s title with a course record of 2:18:11, also a world leading time. She became the fourth fastest woman in history and won the BMW Berlin Marathon for the third time. It is the first time that three runners finished under 2:19 in one race.

AIMS News

22nd World Congress of AIMS The AIMS Congress was held in Tallinn from 6-8 September 2018, coinciding with the 100th anniversary since Estonia first declared independence. Andrew Horsewood of Sportcal spoke to the Congress on ‘Evaluating the value of hosting sporting events’ arguing that sporting events should be evaluated more broadly: “Of course by volume of involvement and economic impact but also considering the wider social impact, sustainability and legacy” he said. Further: “the narrative is as important as the numbers”. Sportcal have sought to create a Global Sports Impact (GSI) Project as a more unified way to assess the impact of sport on the economy and wider society. The project has 10 ‘pillars’ or categories of impact: Economic; Tourism; Event Experience; Media; Social Media; Sponsorship; Sporting; Social; Sustainability; Legacy. Are Altraja, co-founder of the Tallinn Marathon, spoke about ‘The value of the Tallinn Marathon to the city economy’. He argued that “everything starts with emotion; and emotion creates culture and culture affects quality of life and the economy.” Running events create a lifestyle which impacts upon health and wellbeing which positively affects culture and in turn the economy and the overall attraction of a city as somewhere to live and visit. Stacey Conley, in addressing increased women’s participation in running events, said that women are the fastest growing demographic in American running but barriers still exist. She urged organisers to increase receptiveness to increased female participation and stressed the importance of having women in key positions, especially marketing, along with female role models who women can relate to and trust featuring in advertising, social media and all forms of communication. George Kazantzopoulos spoke about the importance of “writing the philosophy of building sustainability into the DNA of the event”. He talked about “sport’s power to influence society’s philosophy, values and behaviour”. He collaborated with AIMS to create the AIMS Green Award and to produce the booklet ‘AIMS Green Guidelines to run a Marathon event that respects and protects the Environment’,all designed in line with the IOC Olympic Movement’s Agenda 21.

Chris Troyanos, Medical Co-ordinator for the Boston Marathon & Executive Director for IIRM (International Institute for Race Medicine) cited a new study saying that heat stroke can be more than 10 times more ‘dangerous’ than heart attacks. He stressed the importance of decisions made by the medical director based on preplanning and analysis, monitoring of weather and the importance of early intervention for heat stroke patients. See: https://www.racemedicine.org

AIMS Medal & T-shirt Awards Frank Baillie presented the first AIMS Running Medal & T-shirt awards. Within AIMS membership alone medals are valued at over $10 million and the T-shirt industry at over $27 million annually. A range of innovative ideas were highlighted such as medals being created in the form of a year on year jigsaw where they fit together to form a word or picture. Prices paid for medal production ranged from $1$30 and for T-shirts from $2-$10. Michael Nishi, General Manager of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, explained the scenario planning and implementation that Chicago Marathon undertakes in mitigating risk. ‘Walking through’ each scenario before the event helps give the best possible protection and service to runners, spectators, staff and volunteers.

23rd World Congress of AIMS

By organising big successful events, ‘we have to realise we are potential targets and we have a duty to make sure that our events are a target that is as difficult as possible for any bad guys to hit’.

and Fernando Jamarne, also electing new Board members Rachid Ben-Meziane and Tetsuya ‘Teddy’ Okamura.

AIMS Marathon Symposium The 12th AIMS Marathon Symposium will be held on 10 November 2018, under the title: “General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Implications and impacts on running events”. During the Symposium four major speakers and other round table participants will present and discuss various themes related to the main topic. The purpose is to offer useful ideas, solutions and practises to race organisers and city or sport authorities.

AIMS Best Marathon Runner Awards Gala The 6th AIMS Best Marathon Runner Awards Gala will be held in Athens during the evening of Friday 9 November. Awards will be made to the best male and female runners of 2018 along with several other awards to race directors recognising their efforts in the fields of environmental protection (the Green Award) and social engagement (the Social Award). Set out at sunrise to pass volcanoes and the emblematic buildings of the metropolis

Discover Costa Rica running Costa Rica is a country in Central America ranked as one of the most visited international destinations. Although it is small and covers only 0.03 percent of the Earth’s surface Costa Rica proudly harbours 5% of the world’s existing biodiversity. This can be experienced in soaring treetops and jungle canopy, walking through cloud forests and swimming from beaches where protected ecosystems showcase some of the best biodiversity in the world. San José, Costa Rica’s capital and the largest city in the country, is a sprawling metropolis and among the most cosmopolitan cities in

A bustling city located within a tropical paradise; San José is in the centre of the country. It lies in the Central Valley and is surrounded by beautiful cloud forests and coffee plantations. Serving as a centre of operations for the rest of the country, San José is the perfect point of departure for visiting all of Costa Rica.

More than 5000 people set out at sunrise in early December to run from the west to the east of the city under a blue sky and in temperatures ranging from 17ºC to 22ºC. On the outward journey you can see the Irazu volcano and coming back the Poas Volcano. The course passes by the city’s most emblematic buildings including the SJO Cathedral, the National Theatre, ancient hospitals, the Museum of Gold and pre-Columbian Jade and the National Museum where in 1949 the historic decision was taken to abolish the army. Culture Square, Democracy Square and the National Congress building are all close by.

Looking ahead | 8 December 2018 Bengaluru Midnight Marathon, India

Midnight carnival Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore, is India's most famous IT hub and one of India’s richest cities – but until little over a decade ago it did not have a marathon to its name. That changed when a group of Rotarians took the bull by the horns and established the Bengaluru Midnight Marathon in December 2007.

Heritage race attracts thousands to India’s running capital

Organised by Rotary Bangalore IT Corridor, all proceeds go towards community service projects funded by them. Projects include providing toilets for villages in remote areas, providing pure drinking water stations, benches, school uniforms, shoes, solar power, computer labs and mid-day meals to rural schools lacking such facilities. Bengaluru Midnight Marathon is popularly known as Bengaluru's heritage run. It was one of the first consistent efforts to promote distance running year on year. Running as a sport was in its infancy in India when it started. Now Bengaluru is rated as the “running capital of India” with many running clubs which train and nurture the ordinary office-goer to take part in the many runs that are staged here.

It was among the first marathons in the world to be run at night. It now attracts runners from 22 different states in India and many parts of the world, including elite runners from Ethiopia and Kenya. The full marathon starts at midnight and some of the first-time marathoners will still be running at 06.00. It's a tough race, since the participants are running against their biological clock, but conditions are pleasant and relatively cool (22ºC). The course is fairly flat and run over a 5.27 km loop. A very carnival-like atmosphere prevails with bands playing popular English and Hindi music, DJs belting out hit songs and local drummers adding to the festive

family-friendly 5km Fun Run; for those already more practised there is the 10km. The turnout for both of these is 10,000–11,000 participants. Many have progressed over the years from the 10km to the half marathon. The Half Marathon attracts over 2000 entries and the Marathon itself around 500. BMM has emerged as the among the friendliest of marathons and many runners remember it as their first run or where they set their personal best timing. The race has a very loyal core following of runners who have run every edition for the past 11 years. Some years ago BMM launched an initiative to encourage athletes from the armed forces to compete shoulder-to-shoulder with elite athletes from East Africa. The idea was to break the myth of supremacy in distance running held by runners from East Africa. This move has paid rich dividends now with quite a few Indian athletes from the forces being victorious in the 10km and Half Marathon. Distance running in Bengaluru has come a long way since BMM started eleven years ago. ■ Visit: midnightmarathon.in Distance Running | 2018 Edition 4

The event has become a popular annual fixture with Thai runners and offers distances of 5km, 10km and half marathon. The certified course allows runners to enjoy seaside views including the Sam Muk Mountain, the spirit of which is supposed to afford protection to the nearby fishing community. There is a Chinese shrine on the summit of the 45m hill, which offers panoramic views of the bay, while wild monkeys abound on the slopes. Runners will also enjoy local hospitality and cheering. Not to be missed are the local foods and menus which are offered at the free food festival for all runners. A race highlight is the 100 fastest men’s and women’s awards. These go to runners who finish with a time ranked within the 100 fastest-ever times in the overall category. The award is a signature of Sam Muk Mountain with the monkey doll names Sammy (male) and Mukkie (female). Each year it becomes more

and more of a challenge for runners to win the award. If you are a runner who wants to experience the joy and fun of running abroad you should come to race in Thailand. 60+ minute runners. The chip time is only activated after crossing the start line so that regardless of the wave you start in your chip time will not be affected. Pacer groups are organised so that it is easier for runners who want to achieve a certain time to pace themselves. The pacers are recruited to run at 4 mins/km (for those wanting to run sub 40-minutes or less); 4:30 mins/km; 5 mins/km; 5:30 mins/km; 6 mins/km. Animation is planned at all the kilometre points. The event includes races for children (aged 513) with courses varying between 300m– 1000m according to the ages of the young participants.

Portugal’s best athletes take part in the race. Jéssica Augusto and Ana Dulce Félix, both Olympians, have won several times. Among the elite athletes there is also a men vs women event; at the moment the women lead with five wins against four.

On 8, 15 and 22 December the organisation stages three training sessions in preparation for El Corte Inglés São Silvestre 10km. Runners meet at 10.00 at the Anfiteatro Keil do Amaral in Monsanto Park. Training lasts around 40-45 minutes and is organised according to three different pace groups so that every runner is catered for. Specialist coaches lead each group and are available to clarify any doubts, either about the race, training or the competition.

All runners receive a technical long-sleeve t-shirt and all finishers a participation medal.

This 10km race runs to the rhythm of Lisbon. Now in its 11th year the start and finish are located in the heart of the city on the magisterial Avenida da Liberdade, illuminated by Christmas lights. The event is organised by HMS Sports and has Five-Star Certification from the European Athletics Association. More than 70,000 runners have taken part in the 10 editions held to date. A lot of the course is flat. It joins the Tagus River and runners proceed along Cais do Sodré, Avenida 24 de Julho, Avenida Ribeira das Naus and through the imposing baroque Praça do Comércio. After seven kilometres it becomes more challenging with the steady ascent up the Avenida da Liberdade. Turning around at the Marques de Pombal monument runners have the benefit of a gradual descent towards the finish line.

Runners are grouped at the start according to the times they have recorded in the past year. The Elite B category is defined as sub-37:30 with other categories being sub 45-minutes, sub 50-minutes, sub 60-minutes and longer than 60 minutes. To ease the flow of runners the start is organised in three different waves. The first wave is for all those in the sub 50-minutes categories; the second wave is reserved for sub 60-minute runners and the third wave is for the

Looking ahead | 7 January 201 Siberian Ice Half Marathon, Russia

A magical Christmas morning by Scott Crighton

Five years ago I was looking for a special event: something I’d never done before which would test me both physically and mentally.

Carnival atmosphere among the snow and ice speaker in preparation for the race. Before I knew it we were off, running our laps in the snow and ice. I was laughing and tried not to fall as the Russians glided past with ease. There were supporters around the course and volunteers giving up their time to assist in the organisation of the race: all absolute heroes to me.

I like a challenge and have completed running events all over the world. These places and events were good but I wanted something different and exciting: an event that would give me a buzz; an adventure that would make me want to come back. I found an event that I have subsequently fallen in love with – not just for the run, but for the city and the friendliest, most welcoming people I have ever met. I found the Siberian Ice Half Marathon. It is held on Christmas day and temperatures have reached as low as -39ºC. I could never have dreamed of running in those conditions. I registered, already thinking “this is fantastic”. I then received an e-mail listing all the activities that the organisers put on for international

I had asked for an adventure and had certainly been offered one.

There is something magical about this event. Words can’t describe it: you have to see it and feel it for yourself. ■ For more information visit: www.runsim.ru

I arrived in Omsk on 5 January 2014 and immediately began to doubt myself: how could I run in all this snow and ice? But kids were out playing in a park: in Siberia even little children are tougher than me. Registration is normally a mundane routine but here it was a highlight of the event. Young children performed dances, sang folksongs and told me about the history and culture of Russia. I woke up on race day buzzing and decided that I would run in my kilt and play my bagpipes. I wanted to give the people of Omsk some Scottish culture. At the start line people were on a stage dancing and singing, children played games on the ice. There was a happy carnival atmosphere. Looking ahead | 20 January 201 Maui Oceanfront Marathon & Half, USA

The tiki marathon Whale sightings, sunrise over a dormant volcano: Maui has something for everyone

whales. These mammals come to Hawaii every winter to mate and give birth, and Maui is among the best places in the world to see these magnificent creatures. For nearly three decades the readers of Condé Nast Traveler have voted Maui one of the top island destinations in the world. With unique Hawaiian culture, pristine beaches and lush jungles Maui — the second-largest island in the Hawaiian chain — has something for everyone, including runners.

Fifteen kilometres from the finish line the course flattens out again and marathoners join the 15km racers as they make their way along the oceanfront. They head toward Lahaina (“cruel sun” — the reason you might want to take advantage of that early start) and the finish line in Kamehameha Iki Park, once home to Hawaiian royalty.

Every January the Maui Oceanfront Marathon stages races highlighting the island’s natural beauty. The day’s events include a certified marathon, a half-marathon, 15km, 10km, and 5km. There is also a “cookie run” on the beach on the Thursday morning before the races where the only entry fee is a pack of cookies, bagels, fruit, or a case of water to share.

The 10km and half-marathon are both out-andback courses from Kamehameha Iki Park that feature the same gorgeous scenery. For participants in the 5km and 15km, buses from the finish will take racers to their respective point-to-point starting lines.

The marathon begins in the resort community of Wailea at 05.00. For those who need a little extra time it is possible to start as early as 03.30, allowing eight-and-a-half hours to complete the race. After leaving Wailea the course wends through Kihei, a beach town on the leeward slopes of Maui’s dormant volcano, Haleakala. Last year, for the first time, the Kihei section of the course featured a short run along the beach lit by tiki torches — a huge hit with participants. Marathon runners next skirt the harbour town of Maalaea on their way to the pali (“cliffs”), the hilly section of the course that gives participants their first chance to see humpback

Many visitors to Maui opt to go to a luau (“feast”) to explore Hawaiian culture and see traditional hula dancing, but Hawaiian traditions are also incorporated into the Maui Oceanfront Marathon races. Participants in the marathon, half-marathon, 15km and 10km are all blessed before each race by Native Hawaiian practitioners. These chants are guaranteed to give runners goose bumps and they make these races like nothing else in the world. Coming to Maui isn’t all about pounding the pavement. On Sunday night after the race and then again the next evening, runners and their families can take part in a highly acclaimed sunset cocktail cruise departing from Maalaea Harbor. The ticket price includes drinks, food — and the bonus of whale sightings. Maui has a tremendous amount to explore, from the world-famous Road to Hana to viewing sunrise over Haleakala crater. Come for a week or two and enjoy everything the island has to offer — including one of the world’s most scenic running courses. ■ For more information visit: www.RunMaui.com Distance Running | 2018 Edition 4

Sponsor highlight Marathon-Photos.com What started as idle thinking on a sleepless night developed into a worldleading marathon photography company. Francis Kay had photographed marathons in the past – but printing the photos and returning to sell them to runners within hours of the race was something he wanted to avoid. He wondered if race photos could be put on the internet so that runners could search for them by name or bib number and place an order online. This kind of search function would be a world first. He found a programmer who said this was indeed possible and the idea behind MarathonPhotos.com was established. The plan was to launch the website with the world’s first marathon of the new millennium – to be held in Hamilton, New Zealand on 1 January 2000. Francis announced the new website in April 1999. The idea proved so popular that 12 events were photographed and online that year. The Millennium Marathon, organised by AIMS founding member Andy Galloway, became the first for the year 2000. Since then Marathon-Photos.com has photographed 6667 events in 60 countries, including marathons, triathlons, cycle and ski events. It has photographed 30 million athletes and has more than 170 million images online. “Our formula for success is simple,” says Francis. “We aim to exceed expectations.” “We give equal importance to all events. We photographed 520 runners in the Australian Outback Marathon one week and 70,000 in the Sydney City2Surf two weeks later. “Because we sell on results, we have to be good. We’re offering athletes a special memory of their day and we never lose sight of that fact. It’s also the reason customer service gets priority in our business.” Strong relationships with organisers is also important and Francis says Marathon-Photos is proud of being very low-maintenance when it

comes to race day, thanks to weeks of careful planning before an event. Planning is everything, he says. The company has a pool of almost 2000 photographers worldwide – including his own daughters. Once the team is locked in, event preparation includes the logistics of getting to the event, then selecting photography and video positions that take into account the iconic features of the course and the direction of the sun. After the race all race images have to be identified and placed online promptly so that athletes can re-live their event before they start training for the next one. With MarathonPhotos LIVE, images can be made available online during the event. “We have a team of programmers constantly devising ways to improve the experience for athletes and we have a team in customer service dealing promptly with any queries,” says Francis.

Marathon movers Dmitry Tarasov The resurgence of the Moscow Marathon, along with the instigation of new supporting events, has sparked a running boom in Russia. Dmitry Tarasov has spearheaded the team that brought it about Sports-mad as a child he entered a soccer school at six but his playing career was curt short by injury at the age of 19. He had managed to combine his studies with his football career: “I was lucky that, at this turning point of my life, there were people next to me who saw potential someone so young and inexperienced and gave me work. I worked with major brands like Nike and Reebok; I managed a street basketball charity project; I worked with professional basketball teams and even went to the Olympic Games in Beijing as a manager of the women's team; I was responsible for sponsorship contracts in the Russian Football Premier League and managed sports events. Eventually, I decided to create a sports agency.”

Marathon modernism in Moscow

In 2010 his agency was in the right place at the right time. Nike engaged them to develop a new treadmill programme: “This was when the running movement in Moscow was beginning. We laid the groundwork for it: we opened cross-country clubs in parks and universities and created running events and, of course, tried to define the target audience. My experience and knowledge in sports marketing and contacts helped me later on to restart the marathon in Moscow.” There had been some significant races in the city before but in the 1990s they had declined due to the deteriorating economic situation following the collapse of the Soviet Union: “We wanted to reverse the situation by changing the concept, reaching a new level of organisation and attracting attention to races. Few people believed that it would work. “There were many agencies in the country that managed sports events but there were none specialising in mass races. We took this niche. After a year's work on the marathon ‘Luzhniki’ we proposed a new model: a large city marathon with preparatory races. Experience taught us that for the marathon to succeed it needs a series of supporting events so that people can test themselves at different distances and consistently prepare themselves for the Marathon. “The Luzhniki Stadium management approved the idea and so too did the City authorities. In 2013 we launched a series of races from 5km Continued on page 39 Distance Running | 2018 Edition 4

influenced the life of the city and the development of race events throughout the country. We are pleased to see other organisers improving their level of service because it raises the general standard. Nowadays Moscow’s parks and embankments are never empty: people are always running, either as individuals or with clubs. It inspires me to work more.

to 21.1km that culminated with the Moscow Marathon in September. “We managed to convince the city authorities that the new race needed a route through the centre of town and with a view of the main sights. For a long time no one had understood why streets should be blocked for the sake of a couple hundred runners. The former Moscow International Peace Marathon was run as four laps along the embankments. We promised that the new route would attract new participants, and it did: about 5000 people ran, a record number at that time. The city authorities saw the potential of the event from that first race and we have grown steadily: last year more than 20 000 people took part.

“After the World Cup many foreigners rediscovered Moscow: they saw a beautiful, modern and safe city with many people speaking foreign languages and interested in sport. As marathon organisers we do the same on a more modest scale. Race participants come from 70 countries: they run and admire the beauty of the city; they are surprised by the level of the organisation and return home full of enthusiasm. It is they themselves who attract new runners to our country. “The number of foreigners in the marathon is growing thanks to cooperation with foreign media, participation in exhibitions and a bilingual website. But our proudest boast is that the marathon and its series of races has

“Our team held a race in St. Petersburg on 5 August. Our debut SPB half marathon in ‘The Northern Capital’ immediately became the biggest mass half marathon in the city. The start and finish were in front of the Winter Palace, in which the Hermitage Museum is housed. The course was a single circuit passing along the central streets and embankments of the city, past world-famous architectural monuments such as Kazan Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Rostral Columns, the Admiralty and St. Isaac's Cathedral. “We had very positive feedback from participants but, more importantly, we held children's races as part of our event for the first time. From now on children's races will be part of all our big races, including the Marathon. It is our investment for the future.”

“By the sixth season, our team had gained experience in managing major events. We improved the sporting quality of the race and learned how to best cooperate with the city authorities; we created our own registration platform with a convenient payment system; we launched the system showing the results in realtime and provided a live broadcast on TV; we started working with an anti-doping agency; we set up our own volunteer program. We formed a team that has the in-house expertise to stage international competitions in Russia. Our employees go to big Marathons in other countries to learn how they do things. “The heart of our race is the start-finish in the Luzhniki Stadium. This sports complex occupies a vast area with the capacity to handle 100,000 people. This summer it was one of the World Cup venues so there are all the necessary facilities in place for security and crowd control.

Marathon greats

Frank Frank Shorter in action during the Marathon event at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany. Shorter finished in first place. Picture: Tony Duffy/Allsport/Getty

Frank Shorter’s victory in the 1972 Olympic Games Marathon brought new interest to the event in the USA which was then sustained by the performances of several top-class American runners following in his wake. His Olympic success, along with the achievements of other American runners such as Bill Rodgers, Kenny Moore and Don Kardong, later followed by Alberto Salazar and Dick Beardsley, is credited with igniting the running boom in the United States during the 1970s. He finished in silver medal position at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal behind Waldemar Cierpinski of East Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 it became clear that East German athletes had been put through officially-sanctioned doping programmes and in the late 1990s Cierpinski was implicated by East German track and field research files uncovered by the German investigative journalist Werner Franke. Both Shorter and Moore (who finished fourth in the race) have argued that Cierpinski’s Olympic performances should be officially reviewed. Frank Shorter was born in Munich in 1947 – the location of his Olympic victory 25 years later – where his father was serving as a US Army doctor. He grew up in Middletown, New York in what he later revealed was a violently abusive childhood. A street in Middletown that was part of the course of the Orange Classic 10km – the inaugural edition of which Shorter won in 1981 – was named in his honour as Frank Shorter Way. He attended high school in Massachusetts and went on to Yale University from where he gained his BA in 1969. He subsequently attended the University of Florida and – after fitting in his Olympic Marathon win – he graduated with a law degree in 1974. In his final year at Yale Shorter won the National Collegiate six-mile title and followed up the next year with US national titles at both

three and six miles. He went on to win the National six-mile (later 10,000m) title in 1971, 1974, 1975 and 1977. His attendance at the University of Florida had a lot to do with the favourable training environment and availability of training partners. Primarily this was Jack Bacheler, at the time regarded as America's best distance runner. Bacheler, Shorter and the later running ‘guru’ Jeff Galloway all made it to the 1972 Olympics and became the focus of distance running on the East Coast. Shorter won the world’s foremost marathon of the time, Fukuoka, four times in a row (1971– 1974) and set his personal best of 2:10:30 in the 1972 race. In the mid-1970s he was dominant on the US road running circuit winning the prestigious Falmouth Road Race in 1975 and 1976 and the Peachtree 10km Road Race in 1977.

Following his win he received the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States but it was this same win which helped to pave the way towards the end of amateurism in athletics and the start of the era of open competition. Shorter withdrew from the 10000m in the Montreal Olympics in order to concentrate on the Marathon but after leading from 25km was caught and passed by the little-known Cierpinski. Even at the time widespread doping abuse by East German teams was suspected. Kornelia Ender’s eleven victories in the swimming events perhaps gave most obvious cause for concern. Cierpinski was the first East German runner to compete successfully at an international level. Shorter steadfastly maintained his stance and interest in anti-doping through the years. He helped to establish the US Anti-Doping Agency and was its chairman from 2000–2003.

Shorter is the only American athlete to win two medals in the Olympic marathon. His gold medal run in Munich came only days after he had finished fifth in the 10,000m final in which he broke the American record that he had set in his qualifying heat. Before Shorter entered the stadium he had been preceded by a student prankster, Norbert Sudhaus, moments ahead of him. While this stunt confused the crowd Shorter was not fazed by the relative silence that greeted him. Shorter knew that none of his rivals could be ahead of him.

In 1979 Shorter co-founded the highly successful Bolder Boulder 10km race in Boulder Colorado where he had long resided. The race takes place on Memorial Day and culminates with a tribute to U.S. Armed Forces at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado. A life-size bronze statue of Shorter stands outside the stadium.

Opinion

The allure of altitude Darius Kenyatta Ellis argues that there is more to the success of runners born at high altitude than can be measured in metres alone

It’s 05.00 on 6 January in Addis Abeba, Christmas Day for Ethiopian Christians and Orthodox Christians around the world. Derartu Tulu, (1992 & 2000 Olympic Champion in 10,000m; London, Tokyo and New York Marathon winner) finishes a run at about 3000m in the Entoto Hills just above the Ethiopian capital. Later that day, as an invited guest for family celebrations, I witness this gifted runner consume almost half a kilo of raw red meat dipped in a tasty sauce of chili peppers and mustard followed by a traditional spicy chicken

stew. This is hardly what she eats on a daily basis: grounded fava beans with avocado and yogurt is more representative of the diet of most runners – like the Bekeles, Dibabas and the great Haile Gebreselassie. This high-octane fuel, packed with iron, coupled with well-hydrated bodies tempered at high altitude, produces enriched hemoglobin with a resultant boost in the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Runners and exercise scientists debate the benefits of training above 3000m or the possible inherent genetic advantage accruing to those born and raised in such a setting.

The Ngong Hills, only 40km from Nairobi, rise 1000m from the Great Rift Valley to a height of 2400m and provides a training ground for elite and amateur runners. Dirt trails are undulating and unforgiving. Paul Tergat used to test his kick on these hills; it’s the best place to train so close to the capital. This area, coupled with a nutrient-rich cuisine and a uniquely Kenyan collective team spirit, has helped Kenya to sweep the podiums of longdistance races throughout the world. to symbolise the sacrifice and power of its athletes. Whether in Iten, Ngong or just on some dusty road, I believe a convergence of unbelievable discipline, faith and diet cultivates Continued on page 53

cultural context – and where victory is the standard expectation. I believe that equally vibrant running cultures are being forged in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. Despite the overwhelming dominance of Futbol if these nations’ respective Ministries of Sport/Youth can promote running and private sector sponsorship of races such as Quito’s 15km participation will be drawn from a much broader sector of society. Derartu Tulu’s Olympic golds are not displayed in her trophy cabinet – she donated them to two monasteries. Faith is paramount to all the Kenyans I’ve ever encountered and in Quito the ‘Ruta de las Iglesias’ 10km race starts in the middle of the night to run around the city’s churches and convents. The broad definition of family and how it helps to coalesce the community in a African and Latin American contexts provides a source of empowerment for all these runners. Continued from page 51

endurance levels that will continue to empower Kenyan runners for generations to come. In mid-May this year Margaret Toroitoch, a native of Eldoret in Kenya, was up early in Quito’s Parque Metropolitano Guanguiltagua. Situated within the city limits of the Ecuadorean capital, but at an altitude ranging from 3000–3200m with breathtaking views of volcanoes and mountain peaks rising above the clouds, this is the place to run for Quitenos and many expatriates. Margaret is making her fourth attempt to win a race that has a median altitude of 2850m. Although not a marathon, the unpredictable weather makes this 58th annual edition of the Quito Ultimas Noticias 15km very challenging for all 18,000 entrants. Spending almost two months prior to the race training daily in this park brought victory for Margaret. And for Kenya, as this race attracted runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Peru and Colombia in an unofficial high-altitude nations’ competition for bragging rights. Peruvian Christian Pacheco would edge out the Kenyans to claim the top place in the men’s race.

Scholarly articles and perhaps doctorates in physiology have been earned testing theories as to why so many victories in long-distance races come from athletes born and bred at high altitude. Having met with so many of the athletes from these nations I’m always quick to reply with the “Radcliffe factor.” For all the theories, arguments and victories, how is it that a runner from the English lowlands set a sinceunrivalled world record that has already lasted for 15 years? My high-altitude born and bred friends would retort that Radcliffe is the Halley’s Comet of women’s long-distance runners while the vast majority come from East Africa. But then there’s Shalane Flanagan (set to defend her 2017 NYC Marathon win) to which the retort is that her roots are in Boulder, Colorado – not that much lower in altitude than Nairobi in a state with more than 50 peaks above 4000m. The altitude argument is like a milking cow that just keeps providing sustenance…

Ecuador, Ethiopia and Kenya. Spend two or three weeks testing your own theories of the benefits of high altitude training on your next vacation. See the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon… but also see base camp of Chimborazo. Train in Entoto while visiting a country that declared Christianity a state religion around 330 AD and is rich in history, culture, cuisine, language and geology. In Kenya run with humility and visit the National Parks and Reserve. Then return to your lower altitude reserve and measure the difference.

I’m inclined to offer a combination of three heavily contributory factors: faith, family and perseverance. This last is honed in an environment where hardship has emboldened East African athletes to perform at such a sustained, high level of performance within a

Kilian Jornet won this historic mountain race for the sixth time. He waited for someone to kick, waited some more as Robbie Simpson started to push and then went for it. Robert Surum also waited, well down the field, but changed pace over the second half of the race to catch everyone except Jornet and Simpson. Francesco Puppi, in fourth, confirmed his solid leadership in the World Cup standings. World champion Lucy Murigi, defending champion, confirmed her title of Queen of Sierre-Zinal by winning for the third time. She ran from the front in a masterful solo run – increasing her lead throughout the race. “I came here to attack the course record. Memorial Partigiani Stellina Susa, Italy To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary the Stellina returned to the original demanding course, 14.4km long and with 1630m ascent, from the centre of Susa, under the magnificent Arch of Emperor Augustus, to the Partisan Brigade’s memorial stone at Costa Rossa. Runners also pass through the Grange Sevine, a symbolic place of the battle for freedom. A sharp elite field spearheaded the 200+ runners that started the race. Johann Bugge had a harder fought victory than the runaway winner of the women’s race, Sarah McCormack.

IAAF/WMRA World Mountain Running Championships Andorra Lucy Murigi defended her senior women’s title while Robert Chemonges led a Ugandan sweep in the men’s race writes Paul Halliford. The 12km course was sometimes steep but generally fast and included 1028m of ascent: the championships alternate between up-only and up-and-down. The terrain was a mixture of forest trail, mountain path, gravel tracks, stony paths and meadow. Murigi quickly established a lead, passing the 4.72km checkpoint 25 seconds ahead of compatriot Viola Jelagat and Austria’s six-time champion Andrea Mayr. She had won by 78 seconds last year and extended her lead to finish 65 seconds clear. Switzerland’s Maude Mathys, who won the European title this summer, covered the second half almost as quickly as Murigi to move up from seventh at the first checkpoint to take silver ahead of Jelagat. Mayr, who had won every uphill-only staging of these championships since 2006, drifted back to sixth. In the men’s race the top three reached the 4.7km checkpoint in 22:39. Chemonges and Joel Akeyo later pulled clear of Victor Kiplangat and at the finish Chemonges snatched victory by one second. He became Continued on page 56 Distance Running | 2018 Edition 4

the sixth different Ugandan winner since 2009 and this was the fourth time in six years that Uganda had swept the podium. 2016 champion Joseph Gray (USA) competing for the 11th consecutive year, finished fourth. Chemonges was particularly pleased to win after crossing the line first in 2016 only to be disqualified for receiving illegal pacing. The Ugandan team also dominated the junior men’s race. Dan Chebet took the 7.3km race with 576m ascent in 35:49 by 16 seconds from compatriot Matthew Chepkurui with defending champion Oscar Chelimo a further 53 seconds back. In the first race of the day, Risper Chebet was the one who started the ball rolling for Uganda, retaining her title convincingly 35 seconds ahead of Germany’s Lisa Oed.

30th IAU 100km World Championship Sveti Martin na Muri, Croatia EXECUTIVES A total of 168 male and 115 female athletes from 41 countries participated in the championships writes Jacek Bedkowski. The course started with one 2.5km lap followed by 13 repetitions of a 7.5km out-and-back route. The course was hilly with a 180-degree turn just after halfway through the lap followed by feed station. The start and main feed station was located just in front of the Terme Sveti Martin complex that also served as the event village. The race started at 07.00 with the short lap. From the early stages there were many running together at a very good tempo for this challenging course. A lead pack of more than 30 runners were followed by small chasing groups. Running on the same road out and back gave perfect opportunities to see the state of the competition, especially after the 180-degree turn. The lead changed frequently but later Bongmusa Mthembu (RSA) made a strong move in the later stages followed by Japanese runners Hideaki Yamauchi and Takehiko Gyoba, both of whom finally overhauled Mthembu.
