Although the calendar year was bookended by many astonishingly fast times in the Dubai Marathon on 26 January and the Valencia Marathon (of which Paco Borao is race director) on 2 December, the period for which performances were considered for the awards ran from 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2018. The performances which clinched both men’s and women’s awards came right at the end of this period in the BMW Berlin Marathon on 16 September. Eliud Kipchoge smashed the men’s Marathon world record

Gladys Cherono defeated strong competition to win in a time of 2:18:11. This has remained the fastest women’s marathon time run in 2018 and places her fourth on the all-time list. Both Eliud Kipchoge and Gladys Cherono were acclaimed as the outstanding male and female candidates for the AIMS ‘Best Marathon Runner’ Awards based on these performances. Other awards made at the Gala were to races demonstrating best environmental practice (the Green Award) and strongest efforts towards social inclusion (the Social Award) as well as to an individual who has given outstanding service over an extended period to the sport of distance running (the Lifetime Achievement Award). The Gala is arranged in collaboration with SEGAS (the Hellenic Athletics Federation), Athens Marathon. The 12th AIMS Marathon Symposium was held on 10 November 2018, with the theme: “General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Four major speakers addressed aspects of the Regulation and how it applies to race organisers in protecting the personal data of their runners, employees and contractors.

Dr. Lilian Mitrou said that the
principle behind the regulation (GDPR) is that privacy is a fundamental human right. In a world of ever-increasing cross referencing of data the purpose of the GDPR is to protect individual rights and ensure accountability of those seeking to use personal data through greater transparency and better processes. AIMS World Record Award The next edition of Distance Running will be published in April 2019. The advertising and editorial deadlines will be on 2 March.
The Green Award was made to the Swiss City Marathon held in Lucerne. The award recognises best environmental practice with candidates judged on the impact the race has had on promoting environmentally friendly practices in marathon events. Three-quarters of all CO2 emissions caused during the SwissCityMarathon originate from participants’ travel and to offset this a SwissRunners ticket, to the race and back from anywhere in Switzerland, is available free to participants. The fire hydrants in town are supplied with clean drinking water and these are used for the hydration points along the route.

The Social Award went to Belgrade Marathon in recognition of their work with runners living with disabilities and for other social initiatives in pursuit of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Over the last four years the “Heroes of the Belgrade Marathon” programme has spotlighted dozens of people who overcame challenges to finish the Belgrade Marathon. The purpose of this initiative is to support and encourage those living with disabilities to participate equally in sporting events.
Green Award
Netsanet Gudeta, who set a ‘women’s only race’ Half Marathon world record of 1:06:11 at the IAAF/Trinidad Alfonso World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia on 24 March 2018, was presented with her AIMS World Record Award in Addis Ababa on 16 November by Haile Gebrselassie and Great Ethiopian Run race director Ermias Ayele.
collected); The Controller (who determines the use of data); and The Processor (who processes data on behalf of the controller). He then traced what is required for an organisation to manage data in accordance with the GDPR. Alejandra Silvestre suggested that any organisation communicating with over 3000 people should have a nominated Data Protection Officer (DPO). She outlined the factors that must be thought through when preparing a strategy for GDPR and its implementation. When dealing with people’s personal data information must be supplied in simple clear language rather than ‘legalese’. Andrea Basso, of the Generali Milano Marathon, said that an individual’s image is considered as personal data under GDPR legislation. This extends even to spectators at events who may be filmed. To cover this Milan Marathon displays signage to inform the public that they may be captured on film. Mr Basso stressed the importance of elite athlete agreements covering consent to use of their images. He also talked about the process of amateur runners giving consent and what measures to take when consent is not granted. AIMS thanks the Region of Attica, as co-organiser of the Symposium and the Greek National Tourism Organisation and Athens International Airport as official sponsors of the Symposium. Rubric| 24 heading Looking ahead February 2019 line thereof IDBI Federal Life Second Insurance New Delhi Marathon, India
Flat course and inclusive camaraderie Many run for good causes in one of India’s most popular races The IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon, held on the last Sunday of February, is one of the most popular in India. The marathon incorporates the National Marathon Championships and is a qualifier for international events. With cool, pleasant February weather, a flat course and great camaraderie the marathon is eagerly awaited by thousands of runners in the nation’s capital, many of whom target it to set personal best times. Runners also look forward to running the marathon’s special route which starts off at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and winds its way past historic landmarks like India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan and Rajpath. In the 3rd edition held in 2018 over 15,000 enthusiastic runners were flagged off at the starting line by cricketing legend and brand ambassador Sachin Tendulkar. Of these 1500 runners attempted the marathon, 5500 participated the half marathon and 4000 entered the timed 10km run while another 4000 enjoyed the 5K Swacch Bharat Run. This included a total of 65 elite Indian athletes, headlined by Rio Olympians Nitendra Singh Rawat and Gopi T in the men’s category, and national-level marathoners, Monika Athare and Jyoti Gawate in the women’s category. Organised by NEB Sports, the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New
Delhi Marathon is an ‘inclusive’ event. Indian blade runner Major D.P. Singh, skateboard half-marathoner Guddu Panwar and over 25 wheelchair participants and para-athletes participated in last year’s edition. Runners participating in the marathon gave back to the community by supporting the official NGO partner – ‘Diksha’, a non-profit school established to provide free and quality education to children from low-income families. Around 50 kids from Diksha also ran the the 5K Swacch Bharat Run. Another team of kids who participated and inspired fellow runners were from the Sneha Charitable Trust. These kids are attempting to fight their HIV genes by running and proving to the world that with the right determination everyone can run and stay fit.

The race tried to observe ‘zero food wastage’ by bringing in the Robin Hood Army, a volunteer-based organisation, to transfer surplus food from the Marathon to the needy. The organisers also teamed up with the ‘Delhi Commission for Women’ who ran to promote ‘Strict Punishment for Child Rapists’. Over 700 volunteers were deployed to help runners along the route. Two hundred doctors attended to ensure an incident-free race along with over 300 policemen and 500+ support staff. Twelve ambulances were on emergency standby and there were aid stations located at every kilometre along the course to provide runners with water and energy drinks. All runners were offered a nutritious post-race breakfast at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The 4th edition of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon will be on 24 February 2019. n newdelhimarathon.com Distance Running | 2019 Edition 1

Looking ahead | 9 March 2019 Saipan Marathon, Northern Mariana Islands
Cocoon of peace “Seven shades of blue” is how the ocean waters of Saipan are sometimes described – and that’s just part of the stunning vistas of land, sea, and sky awaiting visitors to this Western Pacific isle.
An eclectic mix of over 20 ethnicities from around the world make their home on this 21-kilometre long island, adding their unique cultures to the strength of a small community that embraces diversity.
Along the western lagoon shoreline and through the quiet roadways of the northern part of the island clean ocean air sweeps in and historical and cultural sites dot the course. The Saipan Marathon offers runners the opportunity to clear both lungs and minds.
Savour the crunch of a deep-fried empanada, a culinary holdover from the Spanish colonisation of the islands that is best infused with the potent island hot pepper “donni sali.”
Through the centuries both the stunning natural scenery and the warm-hearted people of the Marianas have survived and triumphed over adversity, including Super Typhoon Yutu, the strongest storm on Earth during 2018. Against this historic backdrop the Saipan Marathon offers runners the chance to discover new wellsprings of strength as they push to reach personal goals while enjoying the unique charms of this tropical island.
Pass relics from the colonial past along the marathon course including a pre-WWII church bell tower, Japanese defensive bunkers dotted along the shoreline, two military tanks sitting immobile far out in the lagoon and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cathedral. Jog past a pre-historic latte stone, a limestone monolith of the indigenous Chamorro people who have retained their culture in these islands through the centuries. Watch the whirling dance of the Carolinian people who found a new home in The Marianas in the 1800s when their own tiny atolls were devastated by typhoons. Kick back and feel the sand between your toes at the awards dinner on the beach where an uninterrupted ocean horizon and a vibrant sunset painted across the sky create a cocoon of peace in an often hectic world. Runners looking to refresh their minds and spirits are invited to experience the quiet, unspoiled nature of this intriguing and welcoming but resilient island community. The island is conveniently served by direct or one-stop flights from Korea, China, Hong Kong, Japan and other nearby destinations. n mymarianas.com

The Yoshino River, one of the three biggest in Japan, flows through the city of Tokushima and helps to sculpt the Marathon course. The course runs easily along the banks of the river, setting out a comfortable and convenient route. One of the reasons for the race’s popularity is that nature makes its presence felt close to the shore every year: yellow rape blossoms flow in the wind; the symbol of Tokushima city, Bizan, can be seen from everywhere along the course. A unique aspect of the race is the chance to see authentic Awa Odori dancing. Various “Awa Odori Groups” showcase the dance with cheering to the sounds of drums, shamisen and whistle. At the aid stations along the
Feel nature’s presence course the rich hometown culture is also in evidence with the warm udon served gaining great popularity among runners. The race begins at 09.00 with a second wave being set off at 09.10. Runners are given a generous seven-hour time limit in which to complete the course which starts out from the
Tokushima Prefectural Government Offices and crosses over the Yoshinogawa Ohashi Bridge. Runners then proceed along the Yoshinogawa North Shore before passing back over the Shijo Ohashi Bridge and along the South Shore before finishing in the Tokushima Athletics Stadium. n www.tokushima-marathon.jp

Looking ahead | 24 March 2019 Wuxi Marathon, China Five years has passed since the first edition of Wuxi Marathon in 2014. Since then it has become one of the most praised and influential marathons in China for its picturesque course and professional race service. Wuxi Marathon is still young, but it is already specialised and sophisticated in its organisation. For anyone running the Wuxi Marathon the most impressive memory would likely be the typical Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) scenic spots in the first half of the race. The mists of Turtle Head Island are rising and during early spring the oriental cherry is in full bloom alongside the Light of Lihu Lake and in Lihu Central Park. The course offers a feeling of “Running in Pictures” with the beautiful scenery perhaps helping participants to slow down and better control their pace. After enjoying Wuxi’s best spring scenery the second half of the course encourages participants to enjoy the feeling of running. From 22km the course becomes a “marathon highway”. Through the newer part of the city wide, smooth roads and frequent refreshment points help participants to increase their efforts without worrying about road conditions underfoot or nourishment and hydration.
Young, scenic, sophisticated
The “first focused, then broadening” course is a design which has proved Wuxi to be a “fast marathon” and many runners come to try to break their pb here. From old historical scenery to the new urban landscape, running in Wuxi is like running from the past to the present. The course is able to deliver the most special and unforgettable marathon experiences to every participant. The organisers of Wuxi Marathon are marathon runners themselves so they understand what race services participants need and show their respect through their professional race attitude. After 5km refreshment points are set up regularly along the course. Water and fruit are handed out with enough distance between the tables. In the second half of the race traditional Jiangnan snacks, high in carbohydrate and sugar, are offered to help participants avoid “hitting the wall”. The wide roads ensure
From old historical scenery to the new urban landscape, running in Wuxi is like running from the past to the present that runners’ rhythms are not disturbed due to sharp turns or congestion. All these race designs make for a far better race experience and joyful running in the Wuxi Marathon. For many runners a marathon is a journey and the Wuxi Marathon is really a nice destination. “Taihu Pearl” Wuxi is an evocation of the southern city: rain in Jiangnan; grey mists in the green spring; walking barefoot on flagstone paths; touching the emerald moss; and absorbing the romance of traditional
Chinese Jiangnan. Visitors can also enjoy the adventure of exploring the unique Wuxi cuisine. Wuxi’s developed economy supports many international airlines connecting to different countries and the high-speed rail link from Shanghai to Wuxi takes only 44 minutes. From wherever you are it’s easy to get to Wuxi and the city is well prepared to embrace runners coming from all over the world. n www.wuximarathon.com

Looking ahead | 7 April 2019 São Paulo Marathon, Brazil Picture: Eduardo Frazao/Framephoto
Attractive running in São Paulo In one of the world’s most populous cities, a scenic and tranquil run
The São Paulo Marathon, besides achieving the gold standard of the Brazilian federation CBAt and becoming the first IAAF bronze label race in Brazil, in 2019 celebrates its 25th anniversary. The common start and finish of all events is in front of Ibirapuera Park. Organised by Yescom, it is among those races participating in the “World Marathon Majors Age Group” classification, which began at the 2018 Berlin Marathon and ends with the 2020 London Marathon. On the technical side the marathon course has been made ‘faster’ by reducing curves and turns. There is a race Expo which has stands offering products and services as well as a lecture programme on 5–6 April. Registration is still open; for details see: www.maratonadesaopaulo.com.br. The event is appealing both to experienced athletes seeking fast times and to amateurs as it offers a choice of distances. In addition to the Marathon there is a half marathon and a 5km. Whether striving to top the podium or just enjoying the atmosphere of an international event, the Marathon is a great option. The race offers on-course medical support, hydration and refreshment to all officially registered runners. São Paulo boasts many attractions outside the competition itself for those combining the race with time away. There are many museums,

markets, theatres, bookstores and parks, as well as nightlife and gastronomy of international quality. Visitors have every possibility to enjoy all the best things that one of the world’s largest and most populous cities can offer. Despite its nature as a working city there is no shortage of reasons to seek out its tourist attractions. The venue of the start and finish, Ibirapuera Park, is one of the highlights of the city. It is a huge green area, set amid imposing avenues. There are opportunities to run, pedal, skateboard, play ball, walk with the dog or just lie on the grass. The fauna and flora guarantee a tranquil scene: there are more than 160 species of animals in addition to trees typical of Brazil. Spending a week in São Paulo allows visitors time to go to the nearest beaches. Santos and Guarujá, both about 120km away are scenically beautiful and they have the infrastructure to receive both domestic and international tourists.

Looking ahead | 9 April 2019 North Pole Marathon, North Pole
On ice
Is running at the North Pole the world’s coolest marathon?
With –40ºC temperatures, armed guards to keep polar bears away from runners and running on top of the frozen Arctic Ocean the FWD North Pole Marathon is something entirely different. Entrants must endure extreme cold and have the nerve to run on ice floes with only 2–3m separating them from 4000m of Arctic Ocean. You might think there would be few takers but the race reaches capacity every year. It appeals to people of all shapes and sizes, abilities, ages, and nationalities. Richard Donovan, an Irish ultra runner and former economist who established the event in 2002, claims that “anyone who can comfortably complete a marathon on the road can do it at the North Pole, it’s just that they won’t be setting a personal best. The underfoot terrain is very trying. Every step is energy sapping, like running on sand. Then there’s the cold; that really slows you down.”
to flatten a runway on the sea ice. Finally they build a temporary ice camp of tents. This is all done following the spring equinox when the North Pole shifts from constant darkness to six months of constant daylight. The sun doesn’t set at all – it just circles the sky. Donovan jokes that the race cut-off is before it gets dark. The North Pole camp is then used by scientists and other adventurers over a two-week duration before the ice becomes unstable, breaks up, and the North Pole season is over. To run the race marathon participants must first get to the Norwegian archipelago of
The oldest competitor in the 16 editions of the race has been 78-year-old Michel Ribet of France. There have been three blind runners among the 552 people from 55 countries who have successfully completed the race (535 in the marathon and 17 in the half marathon). The success rate is close to 100%. Race logistics do not involve traffic management. Instead, Russian paratroopers set up a camp by first locating an ice floe of a certain maturity that’s robust enough for a plane to land. Then they fly over the over the North Pole on an Ilyushin cargo plane to airdrop personnel and a tractor
Svalbard (direct flights to Oslo). Following briefings and gear checks, it is a two-anda-half hour flight in an Antonov jet to the ice camp for a 48-hour stay in which, apart from running the marathon, participants are flown by helicopter to the exact North Pole (90 Degrees North Pole). The race field is determined by the airplane capacity, which, using two flights, means about 50–60 runners. “The course is floating around on the ocean”, says Donovan, “so when people look at their GPS they see the entire route has moved during the race”. For safety the course is typically eight laps of a meandering loop. Runners need layers of light clothing: a base layer, fleece and wind jacket along with balaclava, goggles, mittens and trail shoes. The layers are effective for warmth but light enough for the exertions of a marathon. Conditions and times vary widely. The men’s record of 3:36:10 was set by Thomas Maguire (IRL) in 2007. The women’s record of 4:52:45 was set by Anne-Marie Flammersfeld (GER) in 2014. Paul Grealish (IRL) has run six North Pole Marathons – the most by any one person. Those completing the North Pole Marathon are eligible to join the exclusive Marathon Grand Slam Club by finishing a marathon on each of the seven continents and at the North Pole. It’s a race truly deserving of its tagline ‘the World’s Coolest Marathon’. n www.npmarathon.com

Poznan is easy to get to and even more welcoming once you’re there
Poznan Half Marathon is one of the largest running events in Poland and attracts over 10,000 competitors. Runners come from within Poland and from many other countries all over the world. Poznan is the fifth largest city in Poland and located in the western part of the country about 260km from Berlin. Transport is easy by road or by air. In 2019 12,000 runners are expected to take part in this high-level run and to experience the best race atmosphere in Poland created by supporters lining the entire route. Each runner receives a carefully-prepared medal and T-shirt in an attractive starting package. This year’s course is extremely fast and favourable for breaking records. The roads are flat and with long straights even though the course runs through the city centre. The pleasant scenery makes it possible for runners to feel as if they are tourists: the course goes through the old town and several charming parks as well as offering a view of the City stadium and going past Malta Lake where many international rowing and kayaking events take place. Along the whole length of the route runners are supported by special bands, drummers, fans bearing banners or banging pots with spoons

– it is a city event that all residents live for. The organisers’ office and all of the infrastructure for the start and finish is located at the Poznan International Fair in the heart of Poznan close to the railway station, bus station and even the airport, which allows easy access both for city residents and visitors. Every runner can take a shower and have a massage after the run (massages are also available on the route) then drink a free beer from the Fortuna Brewery or take tea. Both on the route and at the finish line isotonic drinks, water, bananas, chocolate and sugar are available and receiving the warming cheers of volunteers is compulsory.

Looking ahead | 20 April 2019 The Great Batumi Night Race, Georgia
Lively port, lively race Rich culture, breathtaking landscapes and a night-time finish In November 2016 two gentlemen met in Tbilisi, Georgia. Niko Sheklashvili, General Manager of the Colosseum Marina Hotel, and Peter Gottwald, freelance race director and organiser. Both had the same idea: they wanted to put on a race in Batumi. As simple as that the Great Batumi Night Race was founded. Batumi is a beautifully situated city on the Black Sea, a lively port with approximately 160,000 citizens in the Georgian region of Adjara. The impressive massifs of the Caucasus rise up directly behind the city. After the meeting in Tbilisi intensive planning and organising culminated in the first edition being held on 21 April 2018. More than 600 runners started the half marathon and the 10km race. It was a terrific premiere and reward for 17 months of hard work. The runners start in the evening at 19.30 and run into the sunset: a perfect route with the beautiful palm-lined main street, through the cosy old town, past the harbour and along the esplanade directly beside the Black Sea beach. The course is not only attractive but also extremely flat. The first three runners finished in 65 minutes and within 30 seconds of each other. An increasing flow of runners crossed the spectacularly illuminated finish line. Finishing after nightfall makes this race unique because Batumi unfolds its appeal and great attractiveness most especially at night. Beside the race in Tbilisi the Great Batumi Night Race is the second AIMS member event in Georgia. The race contributes to running as a health-orientated sport for all as well as to elite competition. It also has a strong charity dimension.
The main sponsor and the host of this event is the hotel Colosseum Marina – one of the leading hotels in Batumi. The team, the sponsors, other dedicated employees and approximately 100 volunteers deliver the event with great commitment and deserve high praise.
In 2019 the race will take place on Saturday 20 April. The team will come up with some innovations to give runners another unforgettable experience. Looking further ahead the organisers are proud that AIMS has shown confidence in the event and venue by voting to hold their 23rd World Congress in Batumi in April 2020. The Great Batumi Night Race is a great sporting event but it also offers the opportunity for runners and guests to get to know a very special and wonderful country. Georgia, with its rich culture, ancient traditions, hospitable people, breathtaking landscapes and wonderful cuisine, is one of the ancient countries and is fast becoming one of the most popular touristic destinations anywhere in the world. The organisers are looking forward to welcoming runners from all over the world for an excellent race in 2019. n batumi-marathon.com Distance Running | 2019 Edition 1

Looking ahead | 27 April 2019 Du Motion-Runners’ Days Dubrovnik (Dubrovnik Half Marathon), Croatia
Earthly paradise A “living museum” with the dynamic buzz of a modern city
Dubrovnik rests in the southernmost part of Croatia and is one of the most attractive destinations anywhere in the Mediterranean. The city walls stretch 2km around the Old Town enclosing numerous fortresses, towers, palaces, museums, churches and monuments which set the stage for many cultural events. The Old Town is a popular cultural destination and feels a bit like a living museum but you will find that it also has its own vibrant present and the dynamics of a modern European city. Magical landscapes, pristinely-preserved nature and magnificent islands nearby confirm George Bernard Shaw’s advice that “Those who seek Earthly paradise should come and see Dubrovnik.” Dubrovnik has become increasingly well-known as an active holiday destination, thanks largely to Du Motion – Runners’ Days Dubrovnik, a fully-fledged international multi-day sports and recreational event. It offers as many as four races: the now globally popular Dubrovnik Half Marathon, a 5K charity race, the extraordinarily
attractive Run The Wall race along the medieval city walls and the Kids’ Day race for children. There are accompanying attractions such as the Du Motion Expo – the gathering place for runners and exhibitors – and Du Motion Chat – a series of talks by prominent commentators from the running world. Du Motion very quickly placed itself among the most successful and best organised running events in the region and was awarded five stars for quality and safety by the European Athletics Association. Excellent atmosphere, plentiful volunteers and interesting panoramic routes that explore the Old City and Dubrovnik’s coast are the main highlights of this boutique running festival. The start and finish of all four races is on the famous Stradun, a beloved city promenade in the heart of Old Town, well known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Runners’ goody bags contain a variety of items whose worth exceeds the registration fee and include numerous tourist and entertainment extras such as free entry to the Dubrovnik walls, museums, excursions and other discounts and surprises. This helps to ensure that runners have a wonderful time in the city and explore its many beauties. Runners from 55 countries and of all age groups come to run in Du Motion’s races, many of them returning to Dubrovnik year after year. This is why it proudly carries the title of the most international race in Croatia. Du Motion turns 5 in 2019 and invites all runners to join the celebration on 27–28 April. It’s a runners’ party you really shouldn’t miss. n www.du-motion.com Distance Running | 2019 Edition 1

KM
My passion, your pride By PAUl SelBy
The story of 1000km Medals told by its founder Can you remember your first ever road race? My first event not only changed my life but eventually also changed the shape of the worldwide market in running medals. I immigrated to South Africa from the UK to set up an engineering business, which did well. We entered a team for an inaugural company relay. Those of you who have participated in such an event will know that these things are often more of a party than a foot race but I still remember suffering as I limped through the 11.3kms allotted to me. Next was the Johannesburg Marathon – just three months later. I should have realised that sane people do not run marathons so soon after their first steps. But it was the first of nearly 700 marathons I have completed. During the 1980s only big events handed out medals. Having run my heart out for four hours I expected to receive something better than a cheap and nasty piece of metal. I decided that I should get involved in making medals so that it would be possible for runners to receive something rather more substantial and commensurate with the effort of running a marathon. Thousands of runners attended races every week during their build up to the Comrades Marathon and clocked up hundreds of racing miles. In 1990 I founded the “1000km Challenge” to reward athletes for their dedication and commitment to participate in races totalling an aggregate of more than 1000km each year: 1000km Promotions was born. The acid test for the medals that we supplied was whether I would be happy receiving such a medal when completing the event myself. This became the bar set for all medals that we produce until this day.
Because the South African market was limited we needed to expand internationally. I approached events such as the london, Berlin and Vienna City Marathons. We teamed up with Metal Badge in Pretoria who today own 1000km. At that time Alan Storey, a world-renowned coach and General Manager of the london Marathon, had been offered any medal from his existing supplier provided it was round, two inches (5cm) in diameter, flat and goldlooking. I offered something completely different with an oblong, modelled antique bronze medal which generated a “wow” factor among runners – something which we have tried to achieve ever since. Since those early days I have always kept one eye on what our competition are doing while looking out for new ideas to keep us at the forefront of technology. We have innovated many manufacturing processes including modelled and cutout medals with unique ribbon fitting systems. More recently, two- and three-tone medals which can now be produced in virtually any colour. With as many as 23 manufacturing steps involved a workforce of around 150 is employed at our South African factory near Pretoria. From 1990-2010 I set myself the challenge of completing 50,000km in official road races – an average of 50km a week for 20 years. Whilst continuing to develop new medals I focused on charity work and raised over 500,000 rand through events such as a “Back-to-Back Comrades” in 1999, the “Cancer Chain of Hope” in 2000 and the london Marathon “1000 miles in 1000 hours” challenge in 2003 at which AIMS Secretary Hugh Jones
was one of the enforcers making sure everything was done by the book. In business Makis Asimakopoulos, of Athens Marathon – The Authentic, and I developed a special medal for the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon of which tens of thousands were sold for charity. Production often begins with a simple idea and I use my 30 years of experience to interpret and develop it into a workable design. Another example of this is the finishers’ medal modelled from a sculpture by leonardo lustig for the Midnight Sun Marathon. In 2008 I broke my ankle during a short training run in the UK. After running marathons twice every weekend for 20 years I suddenly realised with horror that I had run through my middle age and had become an old man. Ten years have elapsed since that fateful run. I have had half a dozen medical interventions and a bout with cancer – but I am back on the road. My desire to assist marathon organisers to procure the best medals available is undimmed, and also to notch up many more marathons myself. The next Comrades Marathon, which would be my 25th, is on 9 June 2019 – which is also my 73rd birthday; no surprise where I will be on that date. People ask why at 72 years of age I am still actively involved in medal production. My answer is that it is simply an extension of the passion that I have for my running. I hope that when you source your medals from us you will feel something of that pride. n www.1000km.co.za Distance Running | 2019 Edition 1

Marathon movers Richard Donovan Have you run a marathon at the North Pole? South Pole too? How about one on every continent? In the same week? Twice? Richard Donovan’s done it all…
To the ends of the Earth Richard Donovan came up with the idea of holding a Marathon at the North Pole. Putting it into practice was a different story – but even that was only the beginning. Just getting people up there and then to run on the surface ice of the Arctic Ocean, was a first. The logistics were formidable: Russian paratroopers had to be landed; then tractors airdropped and a temporary runway built; then a specialist aircraft landed; then tents erected in the world’s most lonely outpost. But that was all done, the race was run in April 2002, and it became an annual event. Donovan moved on: he became the first runner to complete a marathon at both the North and South Poles. A decade later he completed seven marathon distances on seven continents in
seven days. Having done it once he saw a chance to improve his own record: in 2012 he completed the challenge in 4 days, 22 hours, and 3 minutes. That’s from the first step to the last including 43,540km in the air. He snatched some vestiges of sleep on economy flights and carried one bag the entire way. He started at the Russian Novo base in Antarctica, went north to Cape Town, crossed the South Atlantic to Sao Paulo, went further north to Orlando, then east to London before continuing on to Hong Kong and south to Sydney. At one point he wasn’t even able to keep down water, settling for a beer in Sydney as a last-gasp source of carbohydrates. Again, the achievement was not just physical – it was also a logistical triumph. The more complicated the challenge the more Donovan relishes it. He brings a wealth of experience to any venture, fastidious attention to detail, raw performance and an ability to rapidly adapt when plans can’t run. The philosophy underlining his events is: don’t ask anyone to do what you have not done yourself. Have others follow with the benefit of your own direct experience.
For Donovan extreme running is also a meditation; a journey across the mind during which we meet the mental barriers we have placed for ourselves – and overcome them. Those barriers are often born from a lack of confidence. “As the distances lengthen you find that women are just as good as men and older men often beat men in their twenties,” he says. “Perseverance, managing physical and mental resources, pacing yourself: the older you get the better you get at all of that.” He views today’s digitally-enclosed lifestyle as no longer offering transformative experiences. People want a real adventure and his races provide that in often starkly beautiful arenas. The Volcano Marathon takes place under an almost touchable Milky Way in the Atacama Desert. It is the highest desert marathon in the Continued on page 43
So it was not surprising that he turned his own personal accomplishment into the epic World Marathon Challenge, or 7/7/7: The rules are simply to travel to all seven continents within 168 hours and run the marathon distance on each of them during that period. He has a 100% success rate in making that happen for participants.

world. He organises the only official marathon inside the Antarctic Circle, the Antarctic Ice Marathon & 100km (the southernmost marathon and ultra-marathon). He believes his events are for everybody willing to do the right training and encourages people to participate. The resulting experience usually defies everyone’s expectations. His races, inherently expensive and limited in the number of participants that can be accepted, have attained a kind of cult status. It’s not just for the running but for the sense of exploration. He brings people to a place where time doesn’t exist, and what people achieve there is never quite the same for everyone. Competitors come from all kinds of backgrounds and their reasons for competing vary. “You don’t have to be an expert, and the right time to do anything will never arrive on its own.” He has run the Sahara Desert, Mount Everest and the Inca Trail, and an epic endurance run in the Amazon jungle. Donovan’s recent achievements include three transcontinental runs: San Francisco to New York (2015), Istanbul to Rotterdam (2016), and Buenos Aires across the Andes (2017). Life looks different when viewed at running pace rather than out of a car window: “Seeing such a vast
country unfold on foot you notice everything, the way everything changes,” he says. Donovan has served the sport in other ways. He organised the 2011 Trail World Championships in Connemara (IRL) for which both he and his two-time Olympian brother Paul received an

AIMS News Fred Lebow, founder of the New York City Marathon and one of the founding fathers of AIMS, famously advised: “never underestimate the power of a T-Shirt’ – but going by the size of today’s race TShirt market, he may have done so himself. Fred was remarking on the psychological power of a T-Shirt to bind people to a cause or a specific purpose rather than the economic power to be won by success in manufacturing and marketing to millions of runners all over the world – but from one flows the other. At the inaugural World’s Best T-Shirt & Medal Competition, held at the 22nd AIMS World Congress in Tallinn on 8 September 2018, it was revealed that purchasing costs to AIMS members every year amount to US $27 million for T-Shirts and US $12 million for medals.
John Halvorson (Ottawa), Henryk Pascal (PKO Poznan), and Paco Borao (Valencia)
Never underestimate…
Wholesale prices to race organisers ranged widely but on average were $6 per T-Shirt and $2.5 per medal. T-Shirt costs ranged from $2– $10 and for medals $1 to a whopping $30. The competition met with enthusiastic support and will be a permanent part of the AIMS Congress programme in the future. 116 AIMS members submitted T-Shirts and 143 submitted medals with entrants from nearly every country in AIMS membership throughout the six continents. Most were submitted in person at Congress but about 20% came as postal entries. This keen interest to participate seemed to point to the pride members placed in their products. T-Shirt winners: 1. Poznan (POL) 2. Ottawa (CAN) 3. Valencia (ESP) Commended: Kazan (RUS), Belgrade (SRB), Nagoya (JPN), Midnight Sun (NOR), Lanzhou (CHN) Medal winners: 1. Marine Corps (USA) 2. Ravenna (ITA) 3. Wuxi (CHN) Commended: Run for Women (RSA), Aguascalientes (MEX), Kobe (JPN), 3-Country (AUT), Two Oceans (RSA).
Stefano Righini (Ravenna), Rick Nealis (Marine Corps) and Pauline Tiawen Hu (Wuxi)
Leila, Liina and Lily Luik, the triplets who represented Estonia in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Marathon, modelled the T-Shirts and medals. Of particular interest among the items submitted were medals individually hand-made by local artisans using local materials for the Ravenna Marathon “Citta del’Arte”. The Hans Christian Andersen Marathon gave out medals in successive years which assembled into a 5piece jigsaw. Tiffany necklaces were given to Nagoya Women’s Marathon participants. Munich, with its ‘City of Heart’ motto provides heart-shaped medals. Very often varied and
inventive use of materials, colours and designs for ribbons enhanced the presentation of the medals themselves. In place of a T-Shirt – of limited use in sub-zero temperatures – the Siberia Ice Half Marathon provides a fur hat and mittens while Maui Oceanfront Marathon prefers to offer a traditional skirt-like garment as better suited to tropical conditions. Valencia Marathon’s T-Shirt, once wet with moisture (sweat or rain) only then reveals a map of the course. In India the Satara Hills Half Marathon distributes a Marvel Comics running cape in lieu of a T-Shirt. Designs for both Marathon T-Shirts and medals generally employ motifs which reflect the city, and particularly local historic landmarks. Some races keep the same design for continuity but others make a point of changing every year; some always incorporate their national flags or colours but others use more international or abstracted designs.
AIMS T-Shirt and Medal Competitions show size of potential market
The Mumbai Marathon medal design allows both one for the finisher and one for their nominated partner who has done most to help get them to the finish line. This could be a means towards rapidly doubling the size of the medal market – never underestimate. ■ aims-worldrunning.org Distance Running | 2019 Edition 1

Hannes Kolehmainen Pioneering Finnish runner paved the way for Paavo Nurmi The Finnish people saw Kolehmainen’s performances in Stockholm as a perfect example of sisu. While his sporting career was stalled by the First World War the impact of his Olympic performances lived on. Juho Pietari “Hannes” Kolehmainen was the prototype ‘Flying Finn’ – an appellation bestowed upon a generation of Finnish runners inspired by his pioneering example in the years just before World War I.
So did Kolehmainen, but after World War I his focus was on the longer distances – particularly the marathon. At the first post-war Olympic Games, held in Antwerp in 1920, he won Marathon gold in a time of 2:32:35.8 – a new world record despite the Antwerp course, at 42.75km, having been significantly longer than at any other Olympics.
The original Olympic Marathon winner Spiridon Louis and the ‘gallant loser’ in the 1908 London Olympics Dorando Pietri (who turned professional to tour the US in an exhausting and ultimately destructive series of re-matches against former Olympic rivals) established their place in athletics history. A century later no other names from that era have remained recognisable to the informed public but Kolehmainen generated a legacy greater than any distance runner that had preceded him.
Back in 1912 Paavo Nurmi had been one among many aspiring Finnish runners inspired by Kolehmainen’s Olympic feats. Eight years younger than Kolehmainen and aged only 15 he began a strict training programme which flourished during his military service. In the build-up to his international debut at the 1920 Summer Olympics he set several national records and went on to win the Olympic 5000m.
The 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games in neighbouring Sweden was where he achieved his greatest successes: gold medals at 5000m (14:36.6), 10000m (31:20.8); and in the cross-country event. He also won silver in the cross-country team event. His 5000m victory was what stuck in the memory most: a headto-head duel with the Frenchman Jean Bouin. After leading the field together for most of the race Kolehmainen only kicked clear in the final few metres, in a new world record time. In a foretaste of what happened in the 1936 Berlin Olympics (when a Korean, Sohn Kee-chung won the Marathon competing under the Japanese flag and a Japanese name, Son Kitei), the Russian flag was raised for Kolehmainen’s victories. Although there was a separate Finnish team at the Olympics Finland was still part of Russia. Kolehmainen was a vegetarian by choice and bricklayer by trade – both parts of his life which involved constant self-discipline. He was from a sporting family from Kuopio in central Finland and his brothers William and Tatu were also good long-distance runners. Tatu finished 10th in the 1920 Olympic Games Marathon. But as well as any individual traits or genetic predisposition towards athletic success there was held to be something in the Finnish character which helped to maximise physical performance, particularly in endurance events.
In all Nurmi set 22 world records at distances between 1500m and 20km and won nine gold and three silver medals in his twelve events in the Olympic Games between 1920–1928. At his peak Nurmi was undefeated for 121 races at distances from 800 m upwards. Throughout his 14-year career he remained unbeaten in cross country events and the 10,000m.
Sisu is a mixture of stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience and hardiness. The nearest English adjective, equally pithy, would be “gutsy”. It describes situations in which success is achieved against the odds by dint of courage and resolution against adversity, and drawing on inner strength.
At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris Kolehmainen entered the Marathon but did not complete the race. Nurmi won five gold medals and although he is by far the better known of the two Finns he never ran a Marathon. His plans to compete in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Marathon were thwarted by the IOC questioning his amateur status and rejecting his entry only two days before the race. The ruling was confirmed in 1934 and he retired from athletics. Kolehmainen inspired not only Nurmi but many other “Flying Finns” including Nurmi’s rivals Ville Ritola and Edvin Wide. Together with Nurmi he lit the Olympic Flame at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He died in that same city fourteen years later.

Book review
Running is life; life is running Haruki Murakami is one of the greatest writers in the history of Japan. He owned a jazz bar then became a writer, a philosopher and a runner. His books offer insight into the emotional areas of the human mind. They make you ask questions about yourself, others, feelings, the world and why we are here. In ‘What I talk about when I talk about running’, he looks at life and meaning, and illustrates his thoughts through words that touch emotions and bring meaning. His thoughts resonate with millions as they raise deep questions and touch deeper emotions and vulnerabilities. He does this through a kaleidoscope of thoughts and through a special space or ‘void’ as he calls it, that is created for his thoughts while he is running. Running is therapy for Murakami. He talks about the changing of the seasons and being in a group of people in a marathon: ‘In the midst of this flow. I am aware of myself as one tiny piece in the gigantic mosaic of nature. I’m just a replaceable natural phenomenon, like water in the river that flows under the bridge and into the sea’. He looks at the marathon as a metaphor and lesson for life, when he says ‘pain is inevitable: suffering is optional, the hurt part is an unavoidable reality, that whether you can stand any more is up to the runner himself. This pretty much sums up the most important part of marathon running.’ And life. Isolation, along with the serenity of an open calm mind that has space to let new and creative thoughts come in, is a wonderful thing. The psychologist Erich Fromm, in his book ‘Escape from freedom’, claimed that most people did not want to be alone with their deepest thoughts; that reality, fear and the enormity of life’s unanswered questions can be a very scary place, so that most of us will fill our lives with almost any and every activity to avoid it. I think that marathon runners can be different: they find peace in the solitude of the road and the wind. In that space they are free. To have nothing urgent to do in that moment and all day to do it. Murakami explains: ‘I’m the kind of person who likes to

be by himself… who doesn’t find it painful to be alone’. ‘I run in a void or maybe I should put it the other way. I run to acquire a void’. ‘The thoughts that occur while I am running are like clouds in the sky, clouds of all different sizes. They come, and they go, while the sky remains the same sky as always. The clouds are mere guests in the sky that pass away and vanish, leaving behind the sky. The sky both exists and doesn’t exist. It has substance and at the same time it doesn’t. And we merely accept the vast experience and drink it all in’. Murakami says: ‘I don’t care about the time I run. Competing against time isn’t important… much more meaningful is how much I can enjoy myself; whether I can finish 26 miles with a feeling of contentment… enjoying things that cannot be expressed in numbers’.
companions perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the pace of the music he hears, regardless of how measured or far away.’ Peter McLean is head of public relations for AIMS, and the managing director of PMPR Excellence, a communications business specialising in media, diversity and race as well as professional sport.

‘Distance running suits my personality though, and of all my habits I have acquired over my lifetime I’d have to say this one has been the most helpful and meaningful. Running without a break for the last two decades has made me stronger both physically and mentally’. So, this book is about life, and running is one of the ways many of us choose to spend it. Murakami beautifully describes running in Boston; running Athens – the authentic marathon course with its 2500 years of history; how special New York and its marathon are; the beauty of running in Japan, and much more. The joy of running to travel and to travel to run. The beauty of isolation but also of community that we all need at different times in our lives. The delight of all the experiences and people we meet that traveling to run a race brings. Life is a marathon; set your own pace. Henry David Thoreau once said: ‘Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed and in such different enterprises? If a man cannot keep pace with his Distance Running | 2019 Edition 1

Diane Leather 7 January 1933 – 5 September 2018

On 29 May 1954 Diane Leather became the first woman to run a mile in less than five minutes. Only 23 days earlier her fellow Briton Roger Bannister had become the first man to run a sub 4-minute mile just 100 km away on Oxford University’s Iffley Road track. While news of Bannister’s feat reverberated around the sporting world leather’s achievement met only limited acclaim: “There was a bit of attention,” she told a journalist 60 years later, “at least locally.” There were further contrasts between the two barrier-breaking performances: while Bannister had been assiduously paced for three-quarters of what could only be described as a time trial leather had broken her mark in open competition at the Midlands Counties Women’s AAA Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Sports Ground. like Bannister she ducked under her ‘barrier’ by tenths of a second but her lap times had fluctuated wildly. She opened with a speedy 68.8 seconds but followed it with laps of 78.2 and 81.6 seconds before finishing with a 71-second lap to record a time of 4:59.6. earlier that afternoon she had run the 800m event. leather was born in a Staffordshire village north of Birmingham, one of six children but the only daughter of Mabel (nee Barringer) and James leather, a surgeon. British all-rounder who broke women’s five-minute mile barrier she played lacrosse but, after moving to the University of Birmingham as an analytical chemist, the 1952 Summer Olympics sparked her interest in athletics. She joined a local running club, Birchfield Harriers, where a club coach, Doris Nelson Neal, recognised her talent at the longer distances. Neal sought to concentrate on the longer events despite nothing beyond 200m being part of the Olympic schedule. The women’s 800m had been included at the 1928 Olympics but withdrawn in suspicious haste when the IOC deemed that the final had left finishers too distressed. Nevertheless Neal coached leather for the mile, prescribing hard intervals of 150m or 400m five times a week. The following year leather broke the “world best time” with 5:02.6. Her achievement was labelled a “world best” rather than a world record by the IAAF as the distance was not officially recognised until 15 years later. In 1954 leather ran a fraction – one-fifth – of a second outside five minutes just a few days before her sub-five minute mile. After it she improved further with 4:50.8
and 4:45.0 in 1955, her career best. That remained the “world best” for seven years. Her range was exceptional: she equalled the world best for 440 yards with 56.6 and won the women’s national cross-country title four times and the women’s “International” cross-country race three times. leather won two european Championship silver medals at 800m: in 1954 behind the Soviet Union’s Nina Otkalenko in 2:09.8, and in 1958 behind another Soviet, yelizaveta yermolayeva, with 2:06.6. Her final Championships were the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, competing as Diane Charles after marrying in 1959. She went out in the heats of the 800m in 2:14.24. Charles retired from athletics at the age of 27 and lived in Cornwall for the rest of her life during which she had four children and 13 grandchildren. She worked for child protection agencies and was married for more than 55 years – her husband predeceased her in 2017. She died on 5 September 2018, six months after Roger Bannister. Smarna Gora mountain race, Slovenia The final act of the mountain running World Cup was staged at Smarna Gora, north of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana where over 160 athletes competed over 10km of trails that had two challenging climbs interrupted by a short but steep and technical descent. Filimon Abraham and Bernard Dematteis attacked on the first climb to grab a few seconds’ advantage over Johan Bugge and Geoffrey Ndungu. A fast downhill from Dematteis was matched by Ndungu as they passed through the next checkpoint with Abraham chasing and Bugge 20 seconds down in fifth place. Bugge then made an exciting comeback that brought him to victory inside the medieval castle that crowns the hill and his second successive win in this race.

Adelholzen Hochfelln Berglauf, Germany After an unforgettable fight during the 1074m of ascent the Kenyan Geoffrey Gikuni Ndungu emerged victorious. Filimon Abraham and Geoffrey Ndungu had taken the early lead chased by Francesco Puppi and Yossief Tekle. Italian twins Martin and Bernard Dematteis launched an assault with a few kilometres to go but as the crowd cheered the final rush up the Hochfelln Ndungu held on for an eightsecond victory and his second win in the 2018 World Cup following his success in the opening Grossglockner race in Austria.

2018 IAU 24h Asia & Oceania Championship Soochow University, Chinese Taipei Japan dominated the Championship taking individual and team titles in both men’s and women’s divisions. Yuri Matsumoto and Yoshihiko Ishikawa led both teams to double gold medals with aggregated distances of 620.181km and 752.474km. The championship was held in conjunction with the Soochow 24 Hour race, this year celebrating its 18th edition and held on a 400m track. There were a few international invitees for the open race among whom was 27-year old Ivan Penelba Lopez from Spain who led the race for the entire 24 hours to

cover a distance of over 258km – more than 5km ahead of Championship winner Ishikawa. After 6 hours the leaders in the men’s race comprised three Mongolian runners, three Japanese, two Australians and two Indians – all within 4km of each other. After 12 hours the top five were three Japanese, an Australian and an Indian. Runners from Mongolia also showed strongly at the start of the women’s race but at halfway the leaders were two Japanese, one Australian, one New Zealander and one Mongolian. Tia Jones (AUS) led the women’s race closely tracked by Fiona Hayvice (NZL) – and others remained close. The endgame was exciting as so many runners were within striking distance of each other. In the last three hours Yuri Matsumoto from Japan joined the battle for first place and then went on to win by 600m.
With 2.5 hours to go in the men’s competition Yoshihiko Ishikawa from Japan had a solid lead of 5.6 km over his teammate Nobuyuki with Ullas Narayana from India only 140m behind him. Standings remained unchanged to the finish by which time all three had covered over 250km.
