AIMS News

A way forward Despite the flurry of recordbreaking times distance running as a participatory sport remains diminished by mass events mistakenly being seen as a ‘super-spreader’ mechanism. Three months ago distance running events seemed to be starting up again after a lengthy period in which the sport had slowly ground to a halt. The first wave of coronavirus infections had receded and race organisers started planning to restart mass races on a reduced scale. The events that made headlines were small elite-only affairs with a field

counted in the tens rather than thousands. But they were eyecatching: the half marathon in Prague gave us a new women-only world record; London Marathon staged a dramatic finish in which Eliud Kipchoge did not feature. But these were multi-lap courses more reminiscent of stadium athletics than popular marathons – except that spectators had to be actively discouraged from coming to watch. That same weekend the Košice Peace Marathon had to slash numbers from the 5000 planned to 200 to satisfy local health concerns; the following week both the Riga and Bucharest marathons were cancelled at the last moment and a similar fate befell the Belgrade Marathon a week later, followed by Lausanne’s ‘covidcompatible’ race for 1000 runners succumbing to a resurgence of the virus. The trend continued into November with Athens Marathon The Authentic being cancelled less than a week before it was due to be run, in a

Istanbul Marathon

scaled-down anti-covid form, as Greece went into a second lockdown. There were some races that did go ahead with thousands of runners, but not many of them: that same weekend in November Istanbul Marathon, and several weeks before it the Half Marathon, was notable for its 4000-strong field. The organisers’ radical anti-covid precautions were to move the start and finish area to a huge open space

to allow safe distancing between runners before and after the race. To achieve this the course had to be completely changed which involved making a double crossing of the Bosphorus Bridge. The mass field was separated from the elite race with groups of four runners starting every five seconds. Elite-only races with small fields but big budgets and TV coverage continued to be the only realistic

The worst of times, but the best of timings In the most difficult year in living memory for the sport of distance running Valencia hosted four World records: Rhonex Kipruto from Kenya in 10km on the road; Letesenbet Gidey from Ethiopia (5000m) and Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda (10000m) on the track; and Kiwibott Kandie from Kenya in the Half Marathon. Kandie, with his sensational 57:32 timing, was followed home by the Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo (57:36) and Kenyans Rhonex Kipruto (57:48) and Alexander Mutiso (57:59) – all four of them beating the previous record of 58:01. Mutiso ran sub 58 yet didn’t even make the podium. Runners benefited from no apparent wind in the first half of the course but a tailwind over the last few kilometres. The effects were seen in the 15-20km split (13:33) and the final 1097.5m being run in 2:49. In the women’s race Genzebe Dibaba tackled the half-marathon

distance for the first time and won with an impressive (1:05:18). Sheila Chepkirui and Senbere Teferi completed the podium with sub-66 minute performances. The Half Marathon was followed by the Valencia Trinidad Alfonso EDP Marathon in which both men (2:03:00) and women (2:17:16) set new course records. The 2:03 winning time made Valencia the third fastest city in the World, behind Berlin and London – but the most impressive aspect of the race was the huge number of personal bests achieved in this 40th anniversary edition of the Marathon. Statistically: 17 runners ran under 2:08, 11 under 2:06 and 4 under 2:04; 61 runners achieved the Olympic qualification time; 77 ran personal best times in the Marathon (and 23 in the Half Marathon), and 11 set new national records. From the social and strategic points of view in the lead up to the race decision-making was

difficult. The Covid pandemic overshadowed everything. There were doubts over being able to make it happen until the last minute. Within that context, the organising team made up by the Correcaminos club, Valencia Municipality and the Foundation Trinidad Alfonso drew strength from last year’s progress and from the recent award of a Platinum label from World Athletics. The athletes, with very restricted opportunities for Olympic qualification, and the enormous number of running

enthusiasts in our city deserved our full commitment to make the seemingly impossible possible. Circumstances allowed this to happen, along with the trust and forbearance shown by the 30,000 runners registered at the time when the mass race was cancelled. They were asked to choose between reimbursement or transfer of their registration to 2021 and more than two thirds of them chose to run Valencia in 2021.

option in many places. Fast times resulted in the Delhi Half Marathon and in Valencia, where a new men’s world record in the half marathon was set. The usually elite-only field of the Fukuoka Marathon, this year at 100 runners, became one of the largest of these restyled races. As Europe was hit by this ‘second wave’ of the virus and contingent

lockdowns and cancellations there were other places which fared better. The 2020 Eva Air Half Marathon in Chinese Taipei on 25 October attracted 20,000 runners registered for three categories (half marathon, 10 km and 3 km races). The number of participants was especially significant in the face of COVID-19 border restrictions. In China itself races went ahead with mass fields –

from Shanghai on 18 October to Guangzhou on 13 December with only four of the 16 World Athletics ‘label’ races scheduled being cancelled. Japanese races had already, with a few notable exceptions, been cleared from the winter season right through to April. Yet the popular Ekiden university and corporate team relay events, reaching a climax in the National Championships on New Year’s day, were held and marked out a path back towards greater normality. A study of covid infections at athletic events and road races paved the way for this to happen by giving the lie to the misconception that mass running events were “superspreaders” of the virus. On 9 November JAAF published the results of research into 787 races and track meets held nationwide from 1 July through to 4 October.

The report, analysing returns from 47 of the 53 organisations responsible for the meets, documented only one case of someone who was involved in one of the races contracting COVID-19 in the two weeks following the event that they attended. More than 570,000 athletes and 98,000 officials had taken part in the 787 races.

It was only towards the very end of the year that a way forward was presented – the distribution of a vaccine started in early December promises to provide the path out of the Covid wilderness – but not very quickly.

Looking ahead | 2 May 2021 Kazan Marathon, Russia

A one-of-a-kind feeling

The Kazan Marathon is one of the biggest races in Russia. After it was re-established in 2015 it grew from 2000 to 30,000 participants in just four years.

Another exciting part of the Kazan Marathon is the men vs women competition. A runner who gets to the finish line first wins but if a runner also outruns a particular competitor of the opposite sex they get an additional prize. This is a fun and exciting competition to see so hundreds of people watch the live streams of the men versus women races every year.

The race dates back to 1974 when a small community of running enthusiasts decided to run 50km together. For the next 18 years it was held annually and attracted hundreds of amateur runners from all over the region but then ceased. After 23 years off the scene it came back with a bang in 2015. Since then the Kazan Marathon has been attracting thousands of local runners and tourists from all over the world to the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Athletes come to Kazan again and again to feel the unique Tatar spirit and to see the most magnificent landscapes and landmarks. The most famous symbol of Tatarstan is the Kazan Kremlin – a UNESCO World Heritage site. The race start and finish lie right in front of this chief historic citadel of Russia. Kazan Marathon participants run past many other world-renowned sights such as The Kul Sharif Mosque, the Kaban Lakes, the Millenium Park, the Kazan Family Centre, the Kremlin Embankment, the Kazan Circus and the Central Stadium. What attracts tourists here is the peaceful coexistence between all different ethnicities and beliefs. There are more than 150 nationalities: Tatars, Russians, Mordvins, Udmurts, Bashkirs, Chuvash and others. The most common religious beliefs are Islam and Christianity. It amazes foreign visitors to see how these very different religions are always equally treated: mosques and churches stand next to each other;

The Kazan Marathon is a qualifying race for the Abbott/WMM Wanda Age Group World Championships. Moscow and Kazan are the only two qualifying marathons in Russia: Orthodox priests and Islamic muftis are called upon at all public events. People never argue over religion. Kazan houses the only Temple of All Religions in Russia, bringing together architectural elements of 16 world religions. Tatarstan is widely known as one of the most welcoming places in the world. Since 2016 the Republic has been operating the Visit Tatarstan program - the official tourism brand, the purpose of which is to inform tourists, develop the tourism potential of the region, partner projects with local companies, and drive international expansion. “Tatarstan: 1001 pleasures” is the key message that tourists receive. One of those 1001 pleasures is the Kazan Marathon which hosts thousands of foreign sportsmen from all over the world every year. In addition to the marathon there are 3km, 10km, and half-marathon distances offered. The Kazan course has the least range in elevation among all the races in Russia – only 96m in total. This makes it easier for the runners to improve their personal best times. The current event record-holder is Stepan Kiselev who ran 2:12:56 in 2019. The Kazan Marathon holds a special race for 3–6-year olds along with a 60m race for toddlers under three years old. Moreover, there is a corporate league that allows local companies to enter their own teams. Points depending on individual finish times are added up to decide the winning team.

This year’s marathon showed the unity and strength of the running community in the Republic of Tatarstan. Face masks, antiseptics, and limiting numbers to 11,000 did not prevent athletes from celebrating the end of the running season together. Sadly, international runners could not participate in the 2020 marathon but Kazan can’t wait to meet them all in May 2021. Charity is an integral part of the Marathon. For the last 5 years the Kazan Marathon has raised funds and organised charitable events at the race for children with Rett Syndrome, AIDS/ HIV+ people, and local endangered species. One of the main partners of the marathon is the Ronald McDonald House Charity, which helps seriously ill children to be close to their parents while receiving therapy. A big team that brings the Kazan Marathon to life works on the race all year to create the best possible experience for participants. Dozens of sports events producers, designers, and marketers make the Kazan Marathon a celebration of unity, diversity, and a healthy lifestyle. When athletes get to the finish of the Kazan Marathon, they go home as superheroes who overcame their fears and hardships. But they also leave the finish line with the one-of-a-kind feeling of belonging, which they will cherish all year until the next race in Kazan. n www.kazanmarathon.org Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1

Looking Rubric aheadheading | 9 May 2021 Volkswagen Bucharest Halfthereof Marathon, Romania Second line

Come. See. Discover. ‘City of Joy’ offers good chances for running fast times The capital of Romania is one of the most surprising cities in Central and Eastern Europe. Those eager to discover and explore new destinations will delight in the chance to uncover its hidden charms. More than a bridge between East and West, Bucharest is a unique city that has top-quality museums, intricately carved churches and neoclassical palaces. Due to its geographical position Bucharest emerged as the region’s largest and most populous city. Even though different cultures and civilisations passed over its territory the city built its own strong, unique identity. The cultural philosophy is a mix between a local outlook and influences to which Romanians felt close, especially French influences. This is reflected in the nicknames by which the city is sometimes known: “Little Paris” or “Paris of the East”. For more than 50 years after World War II the entire country became a prisoner of communism and subject to massive transformations. Earthquakes, fire and the two World Wars have destroyed a significant part of the city’s heritage and few of the city’s constructions are over 200 years old. This makes Bucharest a young, fast-developing and dynamic city.

of the building started in 1980, during a period of economic hardship, using only materials of Romanian origin. It covers an area of 365,000 square metres and is the world’s largest administrative building (for civil use), the heaviest and most expensive building in the world and it is the third largest in volume. The course passes through the very heart of the city and past Bucharest’s major landmarks: the Triumphal Arch, National History Museum, CEC Palace, Military Palace, Enescu Museum, National Museum of Art, National Museum of Modern Art, Romanian Athenaeum; through large parks and along green boulevards. In the oldest area of the city lie the remains of a fortress where Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Dracula) lived in the 15th century. These sights allow you to feel the power of a vibrant and eclectic city, and will offer you a once in a lifetime running experience. The event is a World Athletics Bronze Label Race and incorporates the Romanian National Half Marathon Championships. The first edition back in 2012 attracted 6000 runners from 35

countries; the 2019 edition hosted over 19,000 runners from over 75 countries. The race has enjoyed one of the highest year-by-year increases in participation in Europe. As a mass sports event Bucharest Half Marathon is second only to the Bucharest Marathon. It supports over 30 social causes so that awareness of the event is used to create a beneficial social and economic impact on the local community. Apart from the sightseeing the flat and fast running course is a good reason for runners wanting to achieve new personal best times to come and take part. n www.bucuresti21km.ro

The name originates from a shepherd, who was the first person to establish himself in the area, named Bucur – literarily meaning “joy”. Just like a youngster present-day Bucharest is a city full of energy, a city that knows how to live, a city that rediscovers itself every day – a city of joy! Looking ahead | 16 May 2021 Copenhagen Marathon, Denmark

An intense street party

Flat and beautiful course through a liveable, open and friendly city Denmark’s largest annual marathon will be held for the 42nd consecutive year in 2021. A record number of entries were received in 2019 with 13,313 runners taking part in the 40th anniversary race. That was also the year when the Copenhagen Marathon was awarded a World Athletics Road Race Bronze Label. The loop course remains extremely flat as it threads its way through the city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods. It takes you past places such as the parliament building Christiansborg, the old Stock Exchange “Børsen” and the New Harbour. It makes the course great for sightseeing and extremely spectator-friendly. The Marathon is known not only as a wellorganised race but also an intense street party for runners with a mind-blowing number of music bands and entertainment spots along the course. Combined with the energetic crowds

that line the course from start to finish you get a unique race with an upbeat atmosphere. The combination of a flat and beautiful course through a liveable, open and friendly city in which it is easy to get around makes the Copenhagen Marathon an ideal choice for experienced runners as well as first-time marathoners. Copenhagen Marathon offers a unique running experience on the streets of a green and beautiful city – a buzzing capital with royal history, modern architecture, rich culture, sustainable living and an innovative, worldfamous restaurant scene. Looking ahead | 5 June 2021 ASICS Stockholm Marathon, Sweden

All things considered The ASICS Stockholm Marathon is one of Sweden’s biggest sporting events, with a scenic course through the streets of Stockholm and an unforgettable finish at the 1912 Olympic Stadium. The 2020 race was cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic but the organisers are planning for a better 2021. How the coronavirus will affect next year’s race schedule is still unknown but the organisers are working hard to be able to stage safe and enjoyable events for their runners. Marathongruppen is the largest organiser of mass-participation races in the country with events such as the Ramboll Stockholm Half Marathon, Vårruset, Tjejmilen and the longest running success story: the ASICS Stockholm Marathon, which premiered in 1979. The 2020 race would have been the 42nd edition but was cancelled due to the pandemic, like other similar events worldwide. In 2021 Marathongruppen once again hope to be welcoming aspiring and returning marathon runners to the city. “We have adapted to the current situation but to continue to operate we must look forward,” says Daniel Almgren, CEO at Marathongruppen. “Based on the information we have right now

Comprehensive plan promises safe running and memories for life

Picture: Magnus Fröderberg

we are carrying out an extensive scenario study to plan how we will organise the race, depending on how the situation develops in the coming months.” ASICS Stockholm Marathon is scheduled for 5 June. The two main scenarios are based on that being possible but, since the situation is yet uncertain and autumn 2021 is already becoming booked up with other events, an alternative autumn date of 9 October has also been secured. The decision on which date will be used must be made by 31 March. The main scenario is to organise the event according to the original plan but with clear infection control measures such as surgical masks for officials, hand sanitiser, advice to stay home if you feel sick, all in accordance with the current recommendations from Sweden’s Public Health Agency. In the second scenario the event would adopt additional corona requirements including social distancing, no friends or family in the event area, controlled corralling of runners, starting groups over a longer period of time, faster dispersal of runners after the race and extended opening hours at the expo. The maximum number of participants might also be reduced on a ”first-come, first-served” basis. If the race has to be moved to October the same two-step scenario approach would be followed. In any event Marathongruppen will implement an infection control plan which has been jointly developed by organisers of all large mass-participation events in Sweden, together with the athletics, orienteering, skiing, cycling and swimming federations.

Another possible way to reduce the risk of crowding is to look at alternative courses – perhaps a one-lap course instead of the current arrangement where parts of the course are repeated twice. The organisers emphasise that if they have to make course changes due to the restrictions in force they will look at alternatives as central as possible. Regardless of the exact course ASICS Stockholm Marathon will still go through Stockholm – one of the world’s most beautiful capitals. Built on 14 islands around one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval city centres the Swedish capital has stunning and varied scenery on all sides. A perfect way to experience this is by lacing up your running shoes. Running a marathon is a big challenge but the emotions you will experience at the start, along the course and at the finish line in the 1912 Olympic Stadium are far beyond the ordinary. It is a memory for life – and Marathongruppen is hard at work to help you create those memories in 2021. n www.stockholmmarathon.se Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1

LookingRubric aheadheading | 13 June 2021 JCP Swansea Second Half Marathon, line thereof Great Britain

Spring in your step Wales’ second city attracts runners of all abilities Over the last seven years the JCP Swansea Half Marathon has become one of the UK’s biggest spring half marathons. Since 2014 the race has attracted a host of international runners and elite athletes to what is widely regarded as one of the flattest and most picturesque courses anywhere in the UK. Quickly becoming a must-run race the Swansea Half was voted Best Half Marathon at the UK Running Awards in 2017 and 2018. Following the postponement of the 2020 edition 2021 will see the return of thousands of runners to the streets of Wales’ second city. The race starts alongside the beautiful and historically important Brangwyn Hall and runners head into the city centre for around 3km. The course takes in the remains of Swansea Castle and Wind Street, before turning on to Mumbles Road for a panoramic view of the full sweep of Swansea Bay. Passing local landmarks like the newly-built Swansea Arena, the world-renowned St Helens rugby stadium, the Swansea Jack memorial and the Cenotaph the course heads towards the picturesque village of Mumbles. Mumbles was home to both Bonnie Tyler and Catherine Zeta Jones and the village comes alive with support for the runners as they head down to Knab Rock and return to Swansea via the promenade. This 10km stretch of coastline provides a glorious backdrop as the distance

counts down towards the finish line. Swansea’s tallest building, the Meridian Tower, dominates the landscape as runners head into the Marina. Passing the Observatory runners take the Trafalgar Bridge to cross the (river) Tawe Barrage and tour the Swansea Marina before returning over the strikingly modernist Sail bridge. The finish is in the heart of the traditional maritime quarter which established Swansea as a sea-faring city. With beautifully restored buildings lining the streets, Morgan’s Hotel and Exchange Buildings provide the perfect backdrop for this city-to-sea half marathon.

With local amenities, dining and entertainment centres all in close proximity to the finish, this half marathon of two halves has everything that runners and spectators might need pre- and post-race. Runners line up alongside Olympic hopefuls and then follow in their footsteps. Previous winners include Team GB’s Dewi Griffiths and Tracy Barlow, with notable victories for Ireland’s Claire McCarthy, Hannah Walker (England) and Matthew Clowes. Clowes (1:04:43) and Barlow (1:13:50) are the current course record holders. Richie Powell set he wheelchair record (1:01:27) in 2016. The Swansea Half is the single biggest fundraising event in the city generating around GBP 1m (1.1m EUR) per year for hundreds of charities and good causes. The route is perfect for runners of all abilities, whether you’re a first-time half marathoner, an experienced club runner or simply running for fun. The magnificent views, flat course and roadside supporters cheering your name create a perfect environment for everyone to join in as we ‘Run Swansea’. n swanseahalfmarathon.co.uk Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1

Looking ahead | 19 June 2021/18 June 2022 Midnight Sun Marathon, Norway Intense contrasts in polar night

The Arctic running experience The Arctic capital Tromsø, at 69 degrees North, lies 350km above the Arctic Circle. Most of the city is on a small island surrounded by the sea and beautiful mountains. The Arctic light and nature in Northern Norway give strong contrasts that provide intense experiences. During the summer the midnight sun shines and tempts you to stay up all night. The polar night arrives at the end of November and lasts until the end of January. During this time the contrasts are even more striking. We have a minimum of daylight but Tromsø is one of the best places to chase the aurora borealis during the winter. The idea for a Midnight Sun Marathon was born in 1989: running at night but in bright daylight. But it is far from an easy marathon. Many who come don’t realise what summer in the Arctic can be like. Cold, wet and challenging weather conditions demand everything from the runners. Picture: Marius Hansen

On the other hand, the spectacular landscape and Arctic setting compensate for sometimes hostile weather. Especially when the Midnight Sun shows itself during the race – for many this is a breath-taking experience and becomes an unforgettable Arctic memory.

Pictures (above and below): Truls Tiller

From the marathon start at 20.30 runners pass through the centre of Tromsø and over the iconic Tromsø Bridge. You pass monuments like the Arctic Cathedral while enjoying the fantastic views of snow-covered mountains and sea that surround you. Most runners cross the finish line around midnight in bright daylight and receive the well-deserved medal around their neck. Approximately 6000 runners take to the streets of Tromsø every year. “We love to welcome people from all around the world at the start of our race and to feel the excitement and energy buzzing through the town”, says race director Nils Haetta. “There are countless amazing stories from participants throughout the Midnight Sun Marathon’s 30-year history. Mostly they are about sharing a passion for running, friendship and happiness – but also sad stories where running contributed to a healing process. We are impressed by all our participants and their strength, endurance and willingness to challenge themselves,” says Haetta.

There is a distance for everyone at the Midnight Sun Marathon. You can choose between the Marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon, MSM Mila (10km), Co-op Mini Marathon (4.2km) and Kids marathon (800m). But you soon see that the race is not just for runners – the locals are an important part of the experience in creating the right atmosphere. They cheer you through the race and push you through the rough patches. Tromsø is situated in the far North but it is not difficult to get to. There are several flights each day from Oslo and Tromsø city centre is only 4km from the airport. Are you ready for your Arctic running experience? LookingRubric aheadheading | 27 June 2021 BMW Tangamanga Second International line thereof Marathon, Mexico

Awakening the senses

Mexico conjures up images of colour, music, fun, beautiful landscapes, delicious food and many other great things. Imagine all these in one place – with running central to them all. That place is San Luis Potosi, a beautiful city in the north of Mexico with amazing sporting destinations. The BMW company settled in the city and became part of our community – particularly the running community. They came together with the Maraton Internacional Tangamanga organisation and began a great journey together. The marathon has increased numbers year by year and impacted thousands of families in a very positive way, by promoting a healthy way of life through running. Running in San Luis Potosi offers inspiring spots to run, the nourishment of natural surroundings and a cultural experience. Over 35 years the event has developed a course that embraces dozens of historical monuments and awakens all your senses.

It is a flat course and compact enough to allow people to cheer runners on throughout its length. Relay participants start at different points along the course and keep company with the full marathon runners. Music stations and museums taking their art to the streets provide you with a distraction from the effort of racing as your mind keeps pace with music and art all along the way. Runners from all over Mexico participate in this traditional marathon together with foreign runners travelling from more than 20 different countries. Traditional, boutique, and five-star hotels all offer great prices for participants. San Luis Potosi offers many opportunities to shop for hand-made craft items from the different indigenous communities of the state. Santa Maria del Rio town is the home of the traditional “rebozo” and is about 30 minutes away. If you make the trip you can buy silk shawls and witness the traditional process by which these garments are created in the Rebozo Museum.

Inspiring surroundings to awaken all your senses

There are many first-class restaurants from different national cuisines in San Luis Potosi, but the most highly recommended is the “huasteca” food with the most delicious flavours imaginable. San Luis guarantees you the best vacation ever: you will run a first-class marathon, half marathon, 10km or 5km and enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, with the second largest urban park in the country in which you can run trail and road surrounded by forest. You can extend your trip to take in nearby towns which present different kinds of scenery. The “huasteca potosina” offers waterfalls, river rapids and lagoons where you can dive, raft and hike; there are parks for running; there is the desert and the famous ghost town “Real de Catorce” where you can stay in ancient hostelries converted to boutique hotels. Visit San Luis Potosi to run, travel, eat and drink and experience the best running trip of your life. n www.maratontangamanga.com

Looking ahead | 23 July 2021 Swissalpine, Switzerland

A high Alpine running spectacle Ultramarathon in a mountain paradise

Swissalpine Davos is Switzerland’s Mountain-Ultramarathon – but more than that – it is the focus of the mountainrunner community that meets for the annual running event – the “Swissalpine Spirit”. In the mid-1980s Andrea Tuffli, an orienteer and engineer from the town of Chur, wanted to organise something special in the Grisons. The result was the first Swissalpine Davos, held on 26 July 1986. At the time this first long-distance route, 67km long and with 2400m of cumulative elevation gain, was described as a “crazy challenge” although there were also shorter distances for not-so-crazy runners who increasingly took up the challenge. In December 1985 Tuffli had contacted Horst Milde, race director of the Berlin Marathon, to ask if he would be interested in partnering with Davos. Milde liked the idea and offered Tuffli the chance to promote his race in Berlin. On 12 April 1986 Tuffli stood in the Hotel InterContinental and launched his vision of the largest mountain ultramarathon in the world. In 1994, in what became the greatest media spectacle in Swissalpine’s 35-year history, three

guest runners from the Tarahumara tribe in northern Mexico were invited. They competed in colourful traditional clothing including their self-made sandals made from old car tyres and with leather laces. Performing demonstrations of their ancient running game Carreras de Bola and the alien culture – including the unfamiliar Swiss cuisine and the gruelling translations – were ultimately too much for the three runners who were used to running up to 800km a week. The 67km trail may have seemed like a sprint to them and the two of them who did compete – Cirildo Chacarito (39) and Victoriano Churo (56) – ended up 53rd and 142nd. From 2010 to 2019 an average of 4700 participants took part in the demanding highalpine running spectacle each year. The routes across alpine meadows and streams, over paths through larch and fir forests and on narrow rocky mountain trails make the Swissalpine a unique running event. There is a run for everyone: K68 (67.6 km, +/– 2606m) – a high-alpine route over four passes and through eight valleys K43 (42.7 km, +/– 1424 m) – the classic mountain marathon through the Dischma and Sertig valleys and over the Scaletta and Sertig passes.

train’ (Rhaetian Railway) makes an unforgettable experience. All participants benefit from a free return trip from a Swiss place of residence, border station or airport. The healthy climate was once the main attraction of Davos Klosters but it is now known for its variety of leisure, culture and above all sporting opportunities: hiking trails, bike routes, adventure parks and bathing facilities make it into a mountain paradise.

There are also children’s races of 500m–1400m according to age category.

With almost 2000 participants the Swissalpine was the first and latest mountain running event to be held during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. In October it became the first Swiss mountain running event to open registration for 2021. The positive feedback from 2020 motivates us all to set new goals. The runs are again spread over two days which reduces pressure on organisers and participants alike. If the Coronavirus forces cancellation entries will be re-booked to 2022 or 60% refunded. Swissalpine remains as exciting and challenging as it was back in 1986.

Even the journey on the world-famous ‘little red

K23 (23.4 km, +629 m / –282 m) – the trail leads through a wildly romantic gorge over the Wolfgang Pass and past the breath-taking Lake Davos. K10 (9.3 km, +/– 163 m) – an experience between the peaks

Opinion Andrew Baker / INEOS 1:59 Challenge

Magic shoes Recent changes in shoe technology have led to wholesale revision of distance running records and made comparison with earlier performances meaningless, argues Hugh Jones The Nike Vaporfly racing shoe was made available for sale in 2017 to huge fanfare. The manufacturers knew it was a gamechanger. They had not only run the tests in their laboratory but had seen what athletes could do when wearing them in open competition. Shalaya Kipp was a researcher in the study published in 2017 in which athletes wearing the shoes were treadmill-tested and found to improve their running economy by anything from 2–6%. She recalls that “We were calling it ‘The Magic’ because we didn’t have a name for it and whenever we put someone in the shoe in the lab it seemed like a magical result was coming out.”

most important issues were weight, comfort and injury prevention with what was thought to be a trade-off between the first and last of these: that the lighter the shoe the less support or protection it gave. That was why Shalaya Kipp, herself an elite runner, was so surprised by the Vaporfly’s test results: energy return seemed to have become a reality. How?

The Vaporfly was noticeably taller than previous models. The Olympic Marathon front runners wearing the protoype in Rio had teetered around a U-turn before the final run-in in a way that drew attention to this. Competition footwear had long been called “racing flats” for a reason. Designers calculated that the higher heel, or what was now termed the “stack height,” would provide both more cushioning and greater energy return. A new, lighter midsole foam combined with a curved carbon fibre plate would assist the forward motion of the foot as it rolls off the ‘stack’, thereby increasing stride length. Or, according to later promotional literature put out after it went on the market, there is “A Built-In Secret Weapon: A full-length carbon-fibre plate underfoot provides a propulsive sensation to help you push the pace.”

Joe Toth / INEOS 1:59 Challenge

Eliud Kipchoge was among the very early wearers of the shoe, still only a prototype, when he won gold in the 2016 Olympic Marathon in Rio de Janeiro. Strange as it might seem it is only relatively recently that different designs of shoe have been rigorously tested to compare their efficiency in action. There were claims decades ago implicit in an earlier version of “Energy Return” (with promotional material which fancifully included images of springs and kangaroos), but shoes were perceived by athletes and coaches alike as “performance enabling” rather than performance enhancing. The assumption was that models were all very similar and that the Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1

Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1

Opinion The combination of these features on average produced a 4% improvement on running economy compared to Nike’s previous fastest racing flat. Since the technology was first introduced all the major shoe companies have done treadmill tests with elite athletes. They run at a set speed for a fixed time (maybe five minutes) in a range of shoes and measure pulse and lactate levels after each trial. Each company knows how they compare although they are unlikely to publish the results. The general consensus seems to be that Nike have maintained a market lead but the other companies are at various stages of catch-up. To agents and coaches it might seem a Godsend: put a pair of these shoes on a runner and, without doing anything else, they will improve their performance by about 4%. The shoes do (part of) the work for you. It could be compared to the effect of blood doping: without anything else being done a runner’s current level of performance ratchets up a notch. Kipp confirms this with a vivid phrase in referring to what was happening in 2016 as “mechanical doping”. Now, “if [a company’s] shoe is not up to standard they will come under pressure from agents, coaches and the athletes themselves to let their contracted athletes run in the Vaporfly or they will be at a disadvantage. We know that the shoe is working well and that it’s creating all the results.” Results have more recently included Eliud Kipchoge’s “Sub2” Marathon in October 2019,

Joe Toth / INEOS 1:59 Challenge

in a paced time trial in which his entire team of pacers were kitted out in the same ‘magic’ shoes. Meanwhile his compatriot Brigid Kosgei broke the 17-year old world record for the women’s Marathon and other word road records also fell at 5km, 10km and Half Marathon. As on the road so too on the track: while there is not the same test data available the consensus is that the new ‘Dragonfly’ spikes also out-perform all previous models. Conducting a treadmill test is more problematic and the track world records broken in the women’s 5000m and men’s 10000m in October 2020,

while likely to have been shoe-aided, could also have been assisted by the ‘Wavelight’ pacing technology. As the sport’s governing body World Athletics were expected to bring clarity to the confusion and duly obliged with a rule change announced on 31 January 2020. The rule required that the shoe should have a sole that is no thicker than 40mm and contains no more than one rigid embedded plate or blade. It also disallowed the use of prototypes (as in the Rio Olympic Marathon) by specifying that for all competitions held after 30 April 2020 any shoes worn must have been available on the open market for at least four months. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said: “we don’t believe we can rule out shoes that have been generally available for a considerable period of time, but we can draw a line by prohibiting the use of shoes that go further than what is currently on the market.” But the rules only ban the shoes in competitions under World Athletics rules. The ‘Alphafly’ is billed as “A Racing Shoe For the Future of Fast. Best for: Long-distance races… our fastest racing shoe.” That sounds like they are expecting the rules to change again under the relentless pressure in pursuit of ever-faster times. And change they did, on 4 December. ‘Development’ (protoype) shoes can again be worn subject to approval of the shoe specifications by World Athletics. Only two days later in Valencia Kibiwott Kandie broke the men’s Half Marathon world record by 29 seconds and the first four finishers were inside the ‘old’ world record from 2018. After remaining unbeaten for eight years the record has been improved by 51 seconds in the last two years.

Thomas Lovelock/ INEOS 1:59 Challenge

Like the use of fibreglass poles in the pole vault, mattress landing areas in the high jump, javelin design, and even the change from cinder to allweather tracks, the ‘magic shoes’ have changed the basis on which performances are evaluated. It was always questionable to compare abilities between athletes of different eras but now it has become so even between athletes of the same era. Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1

Running Rubricinto heading history Košice Second Peace lineMarathon thereof

Europe’s oldest Marathon celebrates its very first edition A marathon dream transformed into reality By Buhuslav Matia The only witnesses to the occasion were Turna Castle, gnawed away by time, and one lone tree standing below it. Five hundred metres beyond Turňa village, beneath this tree and beside the high road, the photographer focused on eight runners and a handful of other figures. They had all become obsessed with the idea of transforming a marathon dream into reality. A trio of East Slovakian sports officials had returned from Paris to Košice with this dream in 1924. For it was on one hot summer’s day in the Colombes Stadium at the eighth Olympic Games that they became gripped by this most noble of all athletic disciplines.

36

Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1

Those men, who remain to this day captured on that wonderful old yellowed photograph in their vests and shorts had a true baptism of fire awaiting them – even though it was 28 October and late in the year. It was a trial of as yet untested strengths and abilities. Ahead of them stretched more than 42 kilometres of road through the countryside all the way back to Košice. Halla, Tronka, Badonič and Kulcsár from the local Košice Athletics Club, Schuller from Slávia and the valiant soldiers Lenart, Zajič and Schmidt. There were no famous Olympic runners there that day, for it was only later on that they became charmed by the atmosphere of the Košice Marathon. In the propositions issued for this race by the Czechoslovak Amateur Athletic Union and

area then called Gajdove kúpele (“Gajda Spa”). The crowds roared a joyful welcome to the be-whiskered and fresh-looking Halla. A garland of laurel rested on his shoulders, the military band played a march, and in recognition of his victory the sky thundered with several salvoes of gunfire. It was Tuesday, 28 October 1924, a little before half past three in the afternoon. Many years later, on the marble plinth beneath the sculpture of the marathon runner in the little park in front of the East Slovakian Museum, there appeared the name of the first hero of the Košice Marathon – Karol Halla. At the celebration dinner following the race the organizers praised Halla’s conscientious and thorough preparation. They set their minds not only on holding a marathon in Košice every year, but also on making sure that each time there would be international participation.

published in the local newspaper Kassai Napló, it was declared that the first across the finishing line would receive the title of ‘Winner of the Slovakian Marathon’ together with an honorary prize and a certificate.

through with the members of the jury who were ensuring the race rules were being kept, sarcastic comments rang out: “Why aren’t you running, you lot? Sitting in a car – anyone can do that!”

The crack of the starter’s pistol cut through the cold autumn air exactly twenty minutes after midday, and these eight marathon pioneers ran off on their adventure.

By the turn-off to Malá Ida cyclists were already waiting for the runners so that they could accompany them and race on ahead to announce their imminent approach to the Košice crowds. A large number of onlookers were lining both sides of Komenský Street, while others had occupied the best places they could find on the wooden grandstand of the sports-ground at the

At Čečejovce Halla had already built up a 300m lead and the spectators welcomed him with applause, but when the Tatra limousine came

The main ideas were presented by Vojtech Braun Bukovský. It was as if he had sensed back there in Paris that he would give up a good part of his life to the Marathon. He was not yet 30 years old when he congratulated Halla, but he already had vital experience in athletics, university studies, and work in his family’s retail business. The variety of his activities was remarkable. Apart from the Marathon he is recorded as being a tireless organiser of cycle races, fencing, skiing and wrestling competitions, as well as being a journalist. n www.kosicemarathon.com Next event: Sun 3 October 2021

Longest-serving race directors of AIMS events Part II · By Hugh Jones

Part I can be read at: https://bit.ly/3nVoOsa

This list of long-serving race directors of AIMS races appeared in the previous edition of Distance Running (2020 Edition 4) alongside three race and race director profiles giving an insight into how mass marathons first found their place on city streets. This second listing has been updated for all races held during 2020. The accompanying profiles look at how the city marathons expanded into areas of the world where distance running had not previously been considered as a mass participation sport and at those races which developed the phenomenon of “running tourism”. As the popularity of running increased during the 1980s every major city, and a lot of smaller ones, wanted to put on a marathon they could call their own. A Marathon became recognised as a badge of civic pride and for its appeal to a valuable part of the tourism market. Events were set up specifically to attract runners from foreign countries – who would most likely spend more Niels Jørgen Holdt is the longest-serving race director of an AIMS event. He has held his position since the very first Copenhagen Marathon was run in 1980. In the 1960s he was a regular member of the Sparta running club. After a trip to New York in the late 1970s, he became inspired to create a Marathon in Copenhagen and to date has been race director for 41 annual editions of the race. Not much later there followed the first women’s race in Denmark and then the 5 × 5 Relay now known as the DHL Relay. It is the world’s largest running event with 120,000 runners participating over five days.

and have a greater impact on the local economy than national or local participants would.

even for a single year, it would be a disaster” (see race profile).

Specialist tour companies in several European countries were already recruiting large groups of runners to take part in the New York City Marathon and were always on the lookout to add more destinations to their programmes. Some of them went a step further and set up ‘boutique’ races in selected destinations for trips they organised themselves. An early example of such an initiative was the Malta Challenge Marathon organised by a British tour operator, Barry Whitmore (see race profile).

As the years passed distance running reached to ever more distant places. Often these offered attractive locations to which runners could now travel with a purpose, but in some places running grew as an indigenous movement. There had long been a distance running culture in Asia, but largely confined to Korea and Japan. In 2003 a seed from the London Marathon was transplanted to Mumbai by Vivek and Anil Singh. They staged the inaugural Mumbai Marathon in January 2004 and then nurtured the race as a flag-bearer for a running movement that swept the sub-continent in the following decade (see race profile).

Foreign runners also helped to project an international image for the host city. This was important at a time when many European countries were experiencing radical geopolitical changes. After the establishment of the Belgrade Marathon in 1988 and a high-profile visit from New York Marathon race founder Fred Lebow in 1989, race director Dejan Nikolic proclaimed that “If the Belgrade Marathon ceases to be held as an international event,

Now, with pre-covid numbers standing at 470 AIMS member races spread throughout 125 countries, distance running has become a truly global sport through the efforts of race organisers, from Boston to Bhutan, from Venice to Vladivostok – and all points in between.

Despite having been the race director since the beginning Niels Jørgen is not showing any signs of slowing down and taking a back seat. He is still active in inventing clever new constructions for our race course, or leading the race on his bike. The current situation has also been keeping him busy maintaining our facilities in good order. Niels Jørgen regularly accompanies the different running groups that we have and he still keeps up a good steady pace.

Persevering through adversity Dejan Nikolic, Belgrade Marathon, est. 1988 Belgrade is an ancient city located at the intersection of the Danube and Sava rivers which divide it into Old Belgrade (most hilly) and New Belgrade (completely flat).

Belgrade has survived more crises than most marathons. Troubled times generated troubled relationships and the Marathon had to deal with 16 Mayors of Belgrade and many other politicians, facing disputes with some of them.

The Belgrade marathon course was designed by Fred Lebow in 1989. and slightly modified in 2017. It starts and finishes in the centre of Old Belgrade but most of the race is run on the flat in New Belgrade.

In March 1999, after the start of NATO bombing operations against Serbia, a message was sent to NATO Headquarters in Brussels saying that the Belgrade Marathon was going ahead the next day on the streets of Belgrade with 15.000 people, including children, taking part. The Marathon stood up against war: that Sunday Belgrade was not bombed and more than 20.000 runners, facing a hard rain, completed the race under the banner “Stop the War, Run the World”. Thirteen Russian cities – from Murmansk to Vladivostok – organised Belgrade Marathons of their own in support

Throughout the 1990s just about the only good news to come out of war-torn Yugoslavia was the Belgrade Marathon. Against all the odds – UN sanctions, war in the region, closure of the airport, strict visa controls, raging inflation and general mayhem – the organisers kept the Belgrade Marathon on the road For 30 years the Belgrade Marathon has been one of Serbia’s largest sporting, social and humanitarian assets and officially became the event of special importance to the City of Belgrade and the biggest and most important sporting event in Serbia. An AIMS member from 1990 it was a pioneering event in the region, working closely with the city’s authorities.

The Marathon gave birth to other races in Belgrade from elite to popular mixed competition – fusing sport, history and culture. These included the hugely popular Belgrade Race Through History, the Belgrade Zoo Children’s Marathon and a dedicated Women’s race. There have been 1.2 million people who have finished

in all of the Belgrade Marathon races over the last 32 years. Since 1995 the Fred Lebow Trophy has been presented to the winners as a token of the friendship that Belgrade Marathon developed with the New York race founder and of thanks for his assistance. Fred helped to establish the Belgrade Marathon and send a message to the World that the marathon has no borders. In those turbulent times the Belgrade Marathon was the only international event of any kind to happen in Belgrade. Just as the Marathon has come through adversity it aims to support individuals who face problems. In 2018 the Belgrade Marathon received the AIMS Social Award in recognition of the “Heroes of the Belgrade Marathon” programme helping runners living with disabilities to finish the Belgrade Marathon. In a similar way the “Mama Fit” campaign promotes education for women about safe physical activity during and after pregnancy. n www.bgdmarathon.org/home.aspx Next event: tbc

Marathon movers Longest serving race directors

Realising tourist potential Barry Whitmore, Malta Challenge Marathon, est.1990 As an established UK running sports tour operator I saw the opportunity to develop the “Challenge” as an event that would sell well in the UK. Coupled with the recession in Britain in 1990, the two combined to provide an opening. I had been taking clients to Malta to run the Malta Marathon since 1977. I knew the island well, Malta is English-speaking and I had invested in property there. I decided on a 3-day event to make it easier by breaking a Marathon down into three parts. I thought this would attract runners who could not train for the full distance. The concept was a world first and it worked.

Setting up such an event 2000km away was a challenge in itself. I met with the Maltese Federation: they loved the idea and were very helpful. I also met with the Ministry of Sport and Tourism who were supportive from the start – and still are now. During 1990 I sought out potential sponsors and support was forthcoming. For the Challenge stages I chose three of the most scenic parts of Malta: I met my wife to be in 1992 when she was working for me as a guide. It was a huge turning point in my life. Isabelle was a great asset in dealing with local councils and other government offices and gave me the confidence to continue. We faced some opposition from local Maltese races that saw my “Challenge” as competition to them rather than a boost to Maltese tourism and a Blue Riband quality event for the island. Thirty years on the “Challenge” remains a muchrespected event with a worldwide reputation. Organising an event like the “Challenge” often presents problems outside your control. On 7 September 2005 the Superintendent of Malta Traffic Police told me that if I staged the “Challenge” on its usual date I would have no police presence because of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. I was forced to put the “Challenge” back one week and because of this we lost 65% of the overseas clients who had booked their flights. It happened all over again in 2015 but this time, forewarned, I brought the race date back by a week at the very beginning of the year. Road works and reconstruction have been a major problem particularly on the final stage along the coast road to Valletta. I was faced with this for eight years but each year a solution was found and the “Challenge” never stopped.

I also changed the length and locations of each stage so that they are all standard distances. Stage 3 is now a half marathon on a beautiful circular course taking in some breath-taking sights in the north east of the Island. But the biggest challenge has been this year’s Covid crisis. Tourism is at a standstill. The 30th edition of the “Challenge” is postponed this year and will take place on 26, 27 & 28 November 2021. We had instead made plans for the 1st Malta Challenge “1/2” Marathon on 29 November 2020 but even this had to be cancelled due to concerns over Covid.. n www.maltachallengemarathon.com Next event: Fri 26 November 2021

Marathon movers Longest serving race directors In establishing the Mumbai Marathon the overriding goal for my brother and myself was to bring people together across all socio-economic strata, onto a common platform. We believe that sport offers a panacea for society’s ills. We experienced an epiphany at the 2003 London Marathon*. Energy, zeal and the event’s inclusive nature moved us, firmed our resolve and drove our decision to bring a marathon to our home, Mumbai. We sowed the Marathon seed in 2004 and it has blossomed. There were trials and tribulations along the way. In a country dominated by spectator sports like cricket and football, growing a participatory sport like running seemed to be an enormous task. The challenge was to get the city and state civic authorities to work in sync. Setting up the infrastructure required, managing thousands of registrations and securing 42km of road closure was all previously unheard of. With the support of our partners, the vision of our sponsors and the ever-present sustenance of the Government and civic authorities we overcame, and realised a “Possible Dream”. If some wondered what was so special about the Marathon the deadly Mumbai terror attacks on 29 November 2008 showed them. Following just seven weeks later the Mumbai Marathon had the city standing in unison for the peace and safety of its people. Registrations for the event were over-subscribed as participants showed the “can do, will do” spirit of Mumbai. It is this sense of inspiration and belief that has brought people back year after year to this iconic event. The event’s journey over the past sixteen years has been transformational: it evoked a fitness revolution, spawned over 1700 road races in India and created an active running community of over two million runners. National performance standards improved and brought representation at the Olympics. The event created an entire ecosystem around the sport estimated at 400 million USD annually. Since inception the Tata

Taking distance running to new frontiers Vivek Singh, Mumbai Marathon, est. 2004 Mumbai Marathon has raised in excess of USD 55 million charitable funds as the single largest fund-raising platform in the country.

Adding its considerable weight to the movement is our title sponsor Tata Sons and Tata Consultancy Services, who are instrumental in propelling the sporting fabric of India. Our event partners, each a leader in their own industry, offer customised experiences to runners and bring a definite synergy to each race.

[* Note – much the same as the event’s founder, Chris Brasher, had experienced a generation earlier at the 1979 New York City Marathon]

The glorious UNESCO Heritage Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus serves as a pictureperfect backdrop for the start and finish of the race. Mumbai is a melting pot of cultures, vigour and dynamism. This uniqueness echoes in the spirit of the event displayed both by the participants and the citizens who are all smiles along the entire course - cheering the runners with motivational music, messages or offering biscuits and water to ensure the runners achieve their goal.

A virtual marathon All was going to plan for the Rightmove Milton Keynes Marathon in the south of England until the coronavirus struck just two months before race day. Race director Andy Hully explains We had record year-to-date entries at the beginning of March 2020 of over 8000 runners. Then Covid came.. Our first thought was to postpone until autumn, but we hire a football stadium as the Marathon venue. Football fixtures are not released until late June so we didn’t know when or where they would be playing matches. Other venues and routes were first explored and then ruled out but luckily the stadium came up with a new date of 6-7 September. We kept our runners informed of the changes and moved all entries to the new September date unless they chose one of six options, which included running a virtual marathon In May, a full refund or deferring their entry to the provisional date in May 2021. Over 1000 opted to run virtually, another 1000 requested a refund, and 3000 deferred their entry to 2021, leaving about 3000 entries transferred to the September event. Running virtually simply involved entrants running at a time and place to suit themselves and then uploading a screen shot or photo of their result. Over the summer it started to look more and more unlikely that large running events would be able to resume in September, so we started to explore alternative Covid-safe race options. As race director and the founder of the event I knew we had to think outside the box. This was what evolved, over many weeks, into the “reimagined” race. The initial idea was to design new running routes with chip timing and allow the runner to take part at any time over a two-week period from 6–19 September, with us providing results and a leaderboard. But how could this be done? The team looked at commissioning a wooden start gantry with a locked metal box containing the timing equipment. This would need to be

A re-imagined race safely secured so that it couldn’t hurt anyone and couldn’t be stolen. Permission was granted from The Parks Trust, a local charity who manage all of the green spaces of Milton Keynes to have this installed at Willen Lake using power from the local Splash N Play park. The chip timing technology could start and stop a runner, but there was no way of checking to see if they had completed the full route and distance. We then looked into adding timing points along the route but were not able to find the right technology or get permission for a power source. We switched our attention to GPS tracking and found an app called RunGo, which seemed to offer everything that was necessary. The app worked well during testing and also had the benefit of custom motivational and sponsor messages. Runners could simply upload their result when they had finished their race. All new routes had to be designed using the many cycle paths and parklands in Milton Keynes to minimise road crossings. We decided that it would be simpler to have a

46

two-lap marathon route. All routes were then measured to the AIMS worldwide standard. Runners would be allowed two weeks in which to complete their race(s) and urged to follow social distancing. This was a unique opportunity for entrants to take part in every distance we offered, and a lot of runners did.

A virtual marathon

runners and the feedback and stories have been inspiring. The 2020 Rightmove MK Marathon Reimagined was not a virtual race, but a race route measured and certified according to international standards which took in the beautiful lakes and scenery of Milton Keynes. A total of six routes had to be measured for the Brioche Superhero Fun Run, Rightmove Rocket 5k, Turing 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon and also the BMI Marathon Relay. This was possible because of the many cycle paths and footpaths that go under or over roads. A progressive web app (PWA) was commissioned showing the routes, entry list, results, prizes, sponsors, etc. The runner could access the RunGo route directly from the MK Marathon app to make it a seamless experience. We chose the PWA rather than a traditional app as we didn’t think we had enough time to get one approved for the App Store.

The self-supported races featured GPS timing technology with built-in turn-by-turn voice navigation using the RunGo app for round-the-clock service between 6–19 September. Performances were valid for gaining good-for-age qualification for the London Marathon and the Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships.

We knew that traditional direction signs wouldn’t work. They would likely disappear over the two-week period or be moved to point in a different direction. Instead we decided to use small way marker discs in plastic. Over 150 posts were photographed so that we could get permission from the relevant owners before getting them made and put in place.

The timing team downloaded the results every evening and checked to make sure that runners had completed the correct course. The results were then uploaded to the MK Marathon app. Any runner who didn’t follow the route was not included in the results but was still sent their rewards.

As soon as the Reimagined Race was announced we got over 1500 new entries and decided to buy branded running belts as an added bonus for our runners. The courses were accessible whenever the runner wanted to race — any time of the day or night. No weather concerns, no early bus rides, no long waits at the start line… no hassle. We also chose the beautiful Willen Lake event lawn to start all races, as it offered good parking, toilets and a cafe. It has been great to put on a different option for our

The 1000 runners who took part in the Reimagined event ran the same course, with GPS timing, a daily updated leaderboard and were able to earn the cash and prizes that would have been given out at the originally-scheduled May event. The feedback from runners was gratifying: “The app was great. Didn’t feel like I was on my own at all” – “I’ve not been a fan of virtual races. They are just not the same as being surrounded by hundreds of other runners but I’m so glad I entered as it gave me focus and something to aim for. The routes were well thought-out and signed.” Three and a half thousand entrants also decided to run virtually over the same twoweek period on a route of their own choice. The Rightmove MK Marathon Weekend 2021 has been set for 2–3 May when we will be back at the MK Dons stadium. n www.mkmarathon.com Distance Running | 2021 Edition 1
