Tokyo Olympic Marathon in Sapporo The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Marathon will not be held in Tokyo and will not take place in 2020. The venue will instead be Odori Park in Sapporo, Hokkaido from 6-9 August 2021. A decision in late March also means that there will be many fewer spectators as overseas visitors will not be allowed to enter Japan and Japanese will be urged to stay at home and watch the races on television.

Above: the 18 miles [to go] marker from the 1908 Olympic Marathon

On an episode of the BBC series Antiques Roadshow, aired from Enfield in London on 16 March, a 113-year old cast iron fingerpost sign was brought for valuation. It was the “18 miles” sign from the 1908 London Olympic Marathon run from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium in west London. The sign was in fact placed 8.2 miles into the course, at 18 miles to go and bears the ‘5-diamond’ emblem of Polytechnic Harriers, the club given the task of organising the race. Such signs were used for the entire length of the course but the only one previously known to be still in existence was the “25 miles” [to go] sign at Eton Bridge (see picture). It is not clear where the 18 miles sign might have been fixed as the bridge where it would have been located was rebuilt during WWII. The length of this particular race, signposted in both miles and ‘kilos’, eventually became fixed as the Marathon standard of 26 miles 385 yards or 42.195 kilometres. Before then marathons had usually been approximately 25 miles

Right: the only other known surviving marker, one mile from the start, still in place at Eton Bridge. Below: the 25 miles marker, enlarged

(40km) but could vary considerably in length. The significance of this race was due to the dramatic finale played out on the track inside the stadium. The Italian leader, Dorando Pietri, collapsed repeatedly and was ‘assisted’ to his feet by race referee Jack Andrew before a last dash to the finish line. He got there 32 seconds before the American, Johnny Hayes, but the Americans protested and Hayes was awarded the victory. Public sympathy was with Pietro and Queen Alexandra, who had witnessed Pietri’s desperate last-lap struggle, awarded him a special commemorative cup. The race stoked a marathon frenzy and ‘re-runs’ attracted huge betting interest. Pietri and Hayes met up in many different locations in the following years, both indoors and outside, where the only constant was the distance they had to run. In 1924 the world governing body, the IAAF, formalised the Marathon distance as that run from Windsor to White City in the 1908 Olympic Marathon.

Japanese Authorities decided: “not to allow entry to Japan for overseas spectators for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games due to the prevailing global COVID-19 pandemic. Tickets bought from the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee by overseas residents are refundable. “Currently, the COVID-19 situation in Japan and many other countries around the world is still very challenging and a number of variant strains have emerged while international travel continues to be severely restricted around the world.” Sapporo lies 800km north of Tokyo so has less fierce summer temperatures and is more conducive to endurance events. Odori Park has been used in the past as a venue for the Hokkaido Marathon and the local authorities are experienced in operating major events in this area. It is a large open space of around 7.8 hectares in the centre of Sapporo City, featuring beautiful lawns, flower beds and trees. The IOC, World Athletics and Tokyo 2020 also agreed on 1km and 2km loops for the race walk and a 20km loop course for the marathon, leaving as a legacy a half-marathon course which would be able to host a future annual event.

New members Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic distance running has had to fight hard to maintain its place in the public eye. What used to be joyous community festivals had to be individualised. Race organisers were forced to fall back on Virtual events – each runner to their own course and start time. Elsewhere in these pages AIMS Race directors explain the benefits that the virtual format can deliver (pp. 39–43) – although there is still a hankering after the mass popular races we used to take for granted on the streets of our cities. But in some places they are happening. Despite the difficult circumstances new races are coming on to the Calendar and joining AIMS. The races highlighted below deserve special attention for managing to keep the flag flying in quite widely separated parts of the world.

Krabi Half Marathon, Chanthaburi Scenic Half Marathon, Chanthaburi Scenic Marathon (THA) Race director Alongkorn Jiamanukulkit says “We are glad for our races to become members of AIMS and are looking forward to welcome all runners around the world. Chanthaburi and Krabi provinces are widely separated but their capitals are of similar size (30,000 and 32,000) and share a very strong interest in tourism as a mainstay of the economy. Chanthaburi province lies along the south-east coast of Thailand, abutting the border with Cambodia while the town of Krabi lies on the west coast of southern Thailand nearly 800km south of Bangkok Both locations are very scenic “Chanthaburi Scenic Marathon, held in October,

Partnership with Japan Running News AIMS has reached an editorial agreement with Brett Larner, the founder and editor of Japan Running News. Japan Running News (www. japanrunningnews.blogspot.com) is the world’s only website focusing on English-language news and information about the Japanese long-distance running scene. Larner has lived in Tokyo since 1997 and has written features for print magazines and websites worldwide. He has been the announcer for the Tokyo Marathon’s official worldwide live television broadcast for the last five years and a commenta-

tor on the Gold Coast Marathon’s live webcast since 2014. The JRN site had 1.5million+ views in the 2020 calendar year. Postings on the site are regularly linked by many of the world’s leading websites and publications. Japan has long held huge importance both for the sport of long-distance running in general and for AIMS in particular. Hiroaki Chosa was President of AIMS for 20 years and cultivated the support of Japanese sponsors. In 2020 there were 25 Japanese member races of AIMS.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Dhaka Marathon (BAN) “I have always been very keen to be a part of an international marathon in Bangladesh.” says Race Director Sabik Rahman.

is our pride: held against spectacular backdrops and a scenic route passing beside tranquil beaches and through mangrove forests. The Chanthaburi Scenic Half Marathon is held in June during the season of tropical fruits – Chanthaburi is called the fruit capital of Thailand, particularly of the Durian fruit. There is a signature fun run called the Durian Run.

“I thank AIMS for their continuous support in successfully completing the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Dhaka Marathon 2021 on 10th January 2021 (Homecoming Day of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman). It was done in collaboration with The National Implementation Committee for Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 100th Anniversary Celebration and coordinated by Armed Forces Division. The event was organized by Bangladesh Army, co-organizers being Army Sports Control Board, Sports Vision Ltd, and Trust Innovation Ltd., with Technical Partners being Bangladesh Athletic Federation and Bangladesh Olympic Association.”

Lives remembered

Wim Verhoorn

Taiwan’s Rice Heaven Tianzhong Marathon (TPE) “Our Marathon is an event for our whole township,” says event founder Mr. Cheng, Tsung-Cheng. “We invite global runners to experience one of Taiwan’s most friendly international races, with 8000 supporters.” Registrations go within seconds: the race attracts 10,000 runners from across the country to support Taiwan’s farmers and to experience the hometown feeling of rice paddy fragrances and friendliness. The enthusiasm of 6000 villagers helps runners along the way. Volunteers cherish their land: their happiness and pride create a friendly and enthusiastic course and a world-renowned event,

Former Dutch national road running coach Wim Verhoorn, who was a Board member of AIMS from 1997–2007, passed away on the evening of 16 March at the age of 79. The race has generated local business opportunities and an upsurge of youth returning to their hometown. Offshoot touristic initiatives abound: the people of Tianzhong find great pleasure and pride in turning their village into the hometown of Taiwanese marathon running.

Varadero Marathon and Half Marathon (CUB) “I have been connected to athletics since I was a kid,” says race director Juan Pineda. “I was born in an athletes’ family and cannot explain my life separated from athletics. Together with my father I started my career in running retailing. In the last 15 years I have progressed in the Running business, organising international events and becoming one of the top elite athletes’ agents. It is an honour for our event Varadero Marathon & Half to join AIMS because we love their spirit of progressing and developing road running, whether professional or popular, for the sake of the sport.”

Verhoorn was KNAU national coach from 1981–1990 and was one of the great promoters of road running from 1980–2000. He played leading roles in major running events such as the CityPier-City [half marathon] and the Enschede Marathon which both became members of AIMS. Working with the Twente authorities he brought the 11th World Congress of AIMS to Enschede in June 1997. Asics Global Sport Marketing Manager for Track & Field, Jacques Valentin, writes:“Wim started to get involved with running when the ultrarunner Jan Knippenberg asked him to coach him. I lived in the next village to Wim and rode my bike to his house in Hoek van Holland to asked him to help coach me at the beginning of my running career. We started a relationship, as a coach and as a friend, that lasted until his passing. “He became my mentor and he

taught me always to think out of the box. His passion and creativity were key drivers. More and more he became involved with other runners on all levels including well known singers, politicians, captains of industry and members of our Royal Family. While he was national coach he guided Gerard Nijboer to the European title in Athens in 1982. “He was a visionary and quickly saw the potential of women’s running, running tourism and coaching platforms to grow the sport. His main passion was travelling the world bringing runners to events and expanding his unbelievable network. He had this great ability and the character to open doors everywhere. He received a royal decoration for his great contribution in promoting running in the Netherlands.” Wim Verhoorn visited the “AIMS Marathon Museum of Running“ in Berlin (now ‘Marathoneum’) several times, always arriving with luggage from his numerous trips to running events all over the world. He brought back souvenirs of all kinds which he donated as exhibits for the museum.

Kazan Half Marathon (RUS) “The autumn half marathon in Kazan was first held in 2016,” says race director Vadim Yangirov. “Since then it has grown to become the largest half marathon not only in Tatarstan but in all of Russia.” “Everything to do with the race is devoted to the theme of Tatar culture: a race in skullcaps (national headwear) is held; Tatar cuisine is presented; a Tatar concert is staged. If you want to get better acquainted with Tatar culture then we welcome you to the Tatar National Half Marathon.” Distance Running | 2021 Edition 2

Asia’s go-to marathon The Manulife Danang International Marathon was one of the first Marathons in Vietnam to be certified by IAAF-AIMS and paved the way for Da Nang to become a preeminent global sports vacation spot.

Enjoy the ideal atmosphere on the east coastline of Vietnam

Held since 2013 in the ever-beautiful city of Da Nang the race has been enticing international runners to explore and visit this most liveable city of Vietnam.

Since 2014 the Manulife Danang International Marathon has changed the way sporting events in South-east Asia are viewed and organised. It has had an incredibly positive impact on tourism in the region. Attracting nearly 50,000 participants the marathon is paving the way for sport and tourism industries in Southeast Asia as it continues on its mission to become a must-do marathon. Each year the event works hard to positively impact Da Nang by bringing runners to the city and putting it on the map as an outstanding tourist location.

Da Nang is located on the coast midway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is the largest city of Central Vietnam. My Khe beach, one part of Da Nang’s 30km of pristine coastline, was voted one of the most stunning beaches on the planet by Forbes Magazine. It is located at the central point which connects three UNESCO World Heritage sites: The Hue Imperial Citadel, Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary. Da Nang is also known as home to the longest suspension bridge in Vietnam (Thuan Phuoc), the only swing bridge in Vietnam (Han River Bridge) and the marvellous Dragon Bridge, which was voted as one of the most beautiful bridges in the world. The city is full of exciting adventures to explore alongside a trip to the marathon. Even though Da Nang has grown rapidly in recent years the city retains its refreshing and

peaceful environment with nature blending harmoniously into its surroundings. The people of Da Nang are known for their friendliness and kindness to visitors. All these things come together to provide the ideal atmosphere of relaxation before and after a marathon. The Marathon course runs along the beautiful east coastline. Both Marathon and Half Marathon cross one of the most phenomenal bridges which further enhances the allure of this “Top 3 Marathon in Southeast Asia”.

Pulse Active organises the marathon and is a pioneer in the sports events industry in Vietnam. Other events it organises range from the competitive Challenge Vietnam and Le Fruit Triathlon to recreational fun runs (Color Me Run and PRISMA – The Night Run). Participation in each event increases every year, expanding the sporting community in Vietnam as well as further developing the sports tourism program in the country. www.pulse.vn #RunDanang www.rundanang.com

The sights and sounds in combination with the peace and fresh air make for a most memorable race in any runner’s experience. It’s definitely worth doing as one of anyone’s running milestones. Distance Running | 2021 Edition 2

Looking ahead Rubric | 28–29 heading August 2021 RimiSecond Riga Marathon, line thereof Latvia

Enjoy the medieval old town of Riga

On the map If you’ve never been to Riga then running a marathon or half marathon there could be a great reason to visit one of the most beautiful cities on the Baltic coast. The Latvian capital is the biggest city in the Baltics and the Rimi Riga Marathon event has grown impressively over the past 30 years. In 2019, before the impact of COVID-19, the marathon welcomed almost 40,000 runners from 82 countries, who participated in five races (marathon, half marathon, 10km, 6km, and 4.2km Family Run) as well as other festivities throughout the weekend. The Rimi Riga Marathon is usually a spring marathon which takes place in May as nature wakes up from hibernation; the leaves on the trees are beginning to blossom and the fresh scent of spring can be felt in the air. This will be the second year that the event has been postponed – this year to 28–29 August. There

will still be wonderful weather for running and a beautiful vibe in the city at the close of summer. The Marathon has been awarded World Athletics Gold Label status. “We are proud that the Rimi Riga Marathon has placed our capital Riga on the map of the world’s most prestigious marathons,” says race director Aigars Nords. The course lies in the very centre of Riga, the largest city in the Baltics. After 31 years the marathon returns to its original start: the very first Riga Marathon took place on 27 July 1991 in the shadow of the Freedom Monument. Runners take off along Brīvības street and travel the full length of the city on a route which also takes in the Latvian National Museum of Art and Latvian National Theatre. Runners pass through the Art Nouveau district, the amazing

The Rimi Riga Marathon celebrated its 30th anniversary race in 2020. The special medals were created by the Japanese designer Junichi Kawanishi, the designer of the Tokyo Olympics medals. While only some of the world’s best athletes get Olympic medals these were awarded to anyone who finished the anniversary marathon on 10–11 October 2020. Since 2007 the official marathon T-shirt has been designed by well-known Latvian artists: last year’s, for example, by Mareunrol’s, the most-recognised Latvian fashion brand, which is regularly part of Paris Fashion Week.

panorama of Old Riga and Pārdaugava, as well as the cobbled streets of the Medieval Hanseatic Old Town and wooden architecture of Ķīpsala island. The course runs on both sides of the Daugava River, the largest in Latvia, and crosses two major bridges. Runners are also taken through Mežaparks, Riga’s largest and most beautiful park. The largely flat, fast route is traffic-free.

While training for the marathon the organisers invite you to join the Virtual Running Club www. rimirigamarathonvc.com. Launched in summer 2020 with the help of Sports Heroes, the Virtual Running Club has already offered various virtual events and races – Summer Championships with Paula Radcliffe and Jelena Prokopcuka “competing”, Winter Championships, charity run, plogging and other challenges involving up to 30,000 runners worldwide. n rimirigamarathon.com Distance Running | 2021 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 8–12 September 2021 Ladakh Marathon & Ultra, India

Running on the roof of the world Ladakh, also fondly known as ‘Little Tibet’, lies in the northernmost part of India. Once a key part of the Silk Road trade routes the valley remained isolated from the outside world for centuries – mostly due to the militarily strategic position it occupies on the northern frontier. Landing at Leh Airport at an altitude of 3256m you can feel the scarcity of oxygen as you breathe in the crisp, thin air. Acclimatisation is necessary in this high-altitude desert valley. Runners need to arrive at least a week ahead of the event. Following the devastating 2010 flash floods that tore through the region – leaving a trail of death and destruction – the first edition of Ladakh Marathon was held to show that Ladakh was ‘up and running’. Chewang Motup Goba, the founder of Ladakh Marathon, believed that introducing such an event would give young Ladakhis a platform to excel at running. Living at such a high altitude they had the natural potential needed for endurance sport. The Ladakh Marathon has created job opportunities with a large number of local winners absorbed into the Ladakh Scouts, the ‘Snow Warriors’ who specialise in high-altitude warfare. Ladakhi women now run in the Indian women’s elite category and represent the country at international sports arenas, moving a step closer to the dream of nurturing a Ladakhi Olympian. Since its inception marathon participation has swelled from 1100 to 4980 in 2019 with runners travelling from over 55 countries. Runners are accompanied by family and friends who count down the days to the Marathon by exploring Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage and stunning landscape. As a dream destination for various adventure activities, the annual Tourism Festival – organised a few days before the Marathon – showcases activities like archery, polo contests, food festivals and other cultural programs.

High-altitude race offers a unique experience Come race day the running experience is unique. Runners enter a hypnotic tranquillity as they run on roads lined with poplar and willow trees. Centuries-old maroon and white monasteries act like milestones against postcard blue skies. All around the ethereal terrain resembles some fantastical imagery of what life on Mars might look like. Running across bridges over wide rivers, participants are transported across time while appreciating that this panoramic view existed for nomads and tribes centuries ago. In tune with the need to find ecologicallyfriendly ways of delivering the event the eighth edition in 2019 eliminated single-use plastic. Runners brought their own hydration packs to refill at the hydration stations and packaged food was replaced by hot fresh food provided through local caterers. ‘The Silk Route Ultra 122km’ will be launched as part of the 2021 edition. The Khardungla and Silk Route Ultra course takes one across the 5370m Khardungla pass while starting at 4237m and 3000m respectively. The Khardungla Challenge is considered a real test of human endurance, and the Silk Route Ultra will test this further. The organisational logistics are a major challenge at such altitude but the organisers are fully assisted by the administration, army, police and especially the local volunteers who man the aid stations, providing full assistance even during the Ultra races in harsh and freezing conditions. Such is the spirit, of the Marathon and of Ladakh itself, that has made its mark on the map of global Marathons. n www.ladakhmarathon.com

Looking ahead | 18 September 2021 Greifenseelauf Uster, Switzerland

Front page news Idyllic Swiss scenery only 15 minutes from Zurich

The Greifensee Run in Uster, on the outskirts of Zurich, is one of the largest and most idyllic runs in Switzerland. It celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019 with 14,733 participants and even took place during the pandemic of 2020 – as “The Special One”. Markus Ryffel won silver in the 5000m at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles but even before that he and his brother Urs had wanted to organise a fun run around Greifensee. They had been inspired by the New York City Marathon, the eighth edition of which Markus had run in 1977 at the age of 22. The idea became a reality in 1980 when the first event was held with 1400 runners. Greifensee lies only 15 minutes outside the city. The scenery is breath-taking: both the half-marathon and the 10km course run alongside the lake where dense reed beds provide a habitat for many bird species. The view to the south reveals the nearby Alps, often already snow-capped in September when the run takes place. The race has attracted prominent winners as well as some 250,000 runners in the various categories. In the 1980s and 1990s standout

athletes Grete Waitz (NOR, 9-times winner of the New York Marathon), Rosa Mota (POR), Tegla Loroupe and Lorna Kiplagat (both KEN) competed and won. In 1998 the Ryffel brothers organised the 7th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Uster and another dream came true. The Greifensee Run became famous beyond Europe, with Tegla Loroupe winning gold in the women’s race, and her fellow Kenyan Paul Koech winning the men’s. In 2003, after the introduction of a 5km race as well as parents/kids’ categories, a record 10,000-plus runners registered. But it’s as much about the socialising as the race: just beyond the finish area people meet in Uster’s municipal park to celebrate and quench their thirst. In recent years every finisher has received the organisation’s “MyRun” magazine with themselves as the front-page hero. At a mass sporting event amateur runners are the main protagonists and, in this case, the “cover models”. So every year 10,000 individual magazines are printed. The most recent two runs were among the most special. In 2019 the Greifensee Run celebrated

its 40th anniversary – with the same founding organisers. The event has long been an integral part of the Swiss running calendar and a traditional date for top local runners such as the European half-marathon champion Tadesse Abraham. Many amateur athletes also use it as a test for an autumn marathon abroad. Then came the biggest challenge of all: facing the 2020 pandemic. The team created “The Special One”: an event lasting not one day but six. Runners could pick their own slot, between Monday and Saturday, from 06.00–18.00, to run alone or in pairs over distances of 7 or 18 km. 4500 enthusiasts took advantage of this offer to experience an unforgettable summer day and a slice of normality in a fantastic environment. n www.greifenseelauf.ch

Distance Running | 2021 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 10 September 2021 Tallinna Maraton, Half & 10k, Estonia Tallinn Marathon is Estonia’s most popular international sporting event. It had modest beginnings: at the first edition in 1989 there were around 100 participants. The record-breaking international sports event was in 2018, during the Centenary year of the Republic of Estonia, when in total 23,940 runners from 67 countries participated across all different distances. The organisation of the Tallinn Marathon received high praise from the AIMS Congress that was being held in Tallinn at the time. Tallinn Marathon 2020 was held virtually and goes down in history as the largest virtual sports event in Estonia where nearly 12,000 participants registered for various events from 53 other countries. The ‘combined’ marathon turned out to be the most popular where the participants had to complete the full marathon distance in smaller parts anytime during the month of September. Tallinn is one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in Northern Europe. The Marathon’s start and finish areas are within the UNESCOdeclared Old Town and the course takes you through the modern city centre and past several well-known sights. The beach promenade of Pirita offers a classical view of the Old Town in silhouette. Since Estonia is a tech-crazy country, free public wifi allows you to share your experiences with friends. Tallinn Marathon offers a whole weekend of runs with something to suit all ages and all abilities. Distances are 5km, 10km, half marathon and marathon. Children can take part in kids’ races. Runner-friendly weather (14–17ºC) and our fast, flat course are important reasons why international runners run in Tallinn. The winner in 2017 ran a world-class time of 2:09.22.

Baltic bonanza Estonia’s most popular race through the medieval old town

Tallinn is a compact city – the start and finish are in the heart of the city and within walking distance of the biggest hotels. Public transport is free for race participants. Marathon finishers are traditionally awarded a medal and a T-shirt with an Estonian national motif. Every year there are exciting new designs which make them unique. Tallinn Marathon’s special area for finishers has proved popular. After finishing you get warm food and a selection of drinks, including beer. The finisher’s lounge is a great place to talk with other runners, relax and get a massage. All services are free of charge for marathon runners. Estonian runner Marti Medar set a new Guinness World Record by bouncing two basketballs at a time at the Tallinn Marathon in 2017. His record still stands at 3:54:16. Tallinn Marathon is popular all over the world. Thousands of people come from abroad every year to participate. Among the home runners President Ms Kersti Kaljulaid, several prime ministers and the mayor of Tallinn have all participated.

Looking ahead | 26 September 2021 H.C. Andersen Marathon, Denmark

A new fairytale beginning 2021 race to go ahead with restrictions

More than a year has passed since COVID19 started to rage our world and daily life. Nonetheless, life went on and after a cancellation of the 2020 edition of H.C. Andersen Marathon, the preparation for this year’s edition has begun. But as an organiser for an event how do you prepare when you have no idea of what restrictions you will have to fulfil to satisfy the government, local authorities – and most importantly the participants?

− Will an Expo be allowed? At the moment we just don’t know the answers to such questions – but we know that: − It is Denmark’s fairytale Marathon, named after the famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen (you see characters from his stories at each kilometre sign) − The course will be the same car-free route as in 2018 and 2019: 2 laps of 21.1km

In the light of rapidly-increasing numbers of people being vaccinated in Denmark and some other parts of the world we are now 99.99% sure that the 21st edition of the H.C. Andersen Marathon will take place on the planned date, but with restrictions. So we are asking ourselves:

− It was the fastest Marathon course in 2019 based on the average finisher time (according to Scan Magazine, 05.03.2020)

− Do we have to start in groups of 500 or 1,000 or can we do a full start (6,000)?

− All participants will receive a unique T-shirt and finisher medal

− Do we have to test all participants prior to the start?

− 700–800 volunteers will help your race go smoothly (but you still have to do the running)

− Will spectators be limited in the start and finish area?

− There are also a ½ Marathon, a 10km and a kids’ race at 4.2km (MiniMarathon)

− There are hotels at fair prices within 2.5km from the start and finish area − the marathon starts and finishes just outside the centre of Odense and it is very easy to get around. − Odense has the cleanest air among international Marathon races in 2019 (according to Scan Magazine, 05.03.2020) Whether you are an experienced runner or a debutant the H.C. Andersen Marathon will be the perfect stage for you and one of the first post-COVID-19 races. We look forward to seeing you on 26 September 2021 for the 21st HCA Marathon. n See: www.hca-marathon.dk Register at: www.sportstiming.dk/ event/6715 Groups and clubs: contact us for help to organise your participation.

Looking ahead | 10 October 2021 Melbourne Marathon Festival, Australia

Virtues of the virtual Runners got to experience ‘finish feeling’ despite cancellation of 2020 event The Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival is an inclusive mass participation event offering a race distance for all ages and abilities. Attracting tens of thousands of participants each year, raising millions of dollars for charity and showcasing the city of Melbourne, this premium festival has cemented its title as ‘Australia’s Largest Marathon’. Starting 42 years ago with 2500 runners the ‘People’s Marathon’ now welcomes over 35,000 participants. Following record-breaking attendance at the 2019 event, with the Half Marathon and the 10km also sold out, there were high hopes for 2020, but… After months of continuously monitoring the COVID-19 situation and working closely with local, state, federal and health officials, we had to cancel the 2020 Festival. We were disappointed but the circumstances and our duty to the health and safety of our participants, staff, volunteers, and the community made it impossible for us to deliver the event despite the generally very low levels of infection in Australia. We instead created a Virtual Melbourne Marathon to help our runners maintain their goals, stay inspired and keep fit during this difficult time. It was an event held remotely that allowed individual runners the flexibility of participating in a distance of their own choosing

between 5–13 December. This was ‘Race Week’ during which participants could log distance and submit it towards their official race time for the 2020 Virtual Melbourne Marathon. There was also an integrated training element built into the app platform for participants leading up to ‘Race Week’, to maintain interest and commitment.

The virtual event allowed us to open up to a new audience: 63% of registrations had never before participated in the Melbourne Marathon Festival. Participants were able to use the virtual event as a motivation to train and inspire personal achievement in the depths of a COVID-19 world. It also provided a means to stay connected.

The event allowed our global community to celebrate resilience and a shared love of running. We had over 5500 committed participants in over 84 countries, each basking in the ‘finish feeling’ of completing the event and unlocking the augmented reality finisher medal to take a selfie with and share to the world. Participants also received the official 2020 finishers’ medal in the post.

After unprecedented challenges we are excited to plan for the return of our physical event in 2021. We look forward to again hearing the roar at the start line but it would be foolish to dismiss the advantages of virtually-based elements to which the situation in 2020 exposed us. Virtual events offer great opportunities where travel is restricted. Not to mention virtual training programs or activities that complement the physical event. In preparing for the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival 2021 on 10 October the health and safety of our participants, spectators, volunteers, partners and team members remains our top priority. We are continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will take the necessary steps to deliver a safe, rewarding and memorable event for all. We look forward to welcoming new and past runners to the 2021 Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival. n www.melbournemarathon.com.au Distance Running | 2021 Edition 2

HALF MARATHON

WORLD RECORD

Kibiwott Kandie

57:32

24 oct 2021 mediomaratonvalencia.com

Marathon moments The first ever women’s Olympic Marathon threw up two images which encapsulated both the agony and the ecstasy of the Marathon – in reverse order. First came the moment when Joan Benoit entered the stadium with 500m left to run. In any stadium finish to a championship marathon it’s the moment when the cheer goes up from the crowd in acclamation of the about-to-be winner that is probably the most memorable moment in any marathon champion’s career. Sometimes the victory is still in doubt but that was not the case here. Benoit led by over 400m and had time to savour the moment as she completed a lap of the Coliseum track.

Ecstasy and agony

She half-raised her left hand in acknowledgement of the roar from the crowd but, almost hiding under the sizeable white cap she had worn from the start of the race, pressed on with her businesslike stride. She passed by the finish line out in lane five, breaking for the kerb after entering the bend and only then removed her cap and waved it at the crowd along the back straight. She hit the home straight over a full lap ahead of second-placed Grete Waitz and crossed the finish line to become the inaugural winner of the women’s Olympic Marathon. Her time remained the Olympic record for 16 years. The 50 runners in the field, from 28 countries, had started their journey at the Santa Monica College track. A sunny day, with the temperature close to 30ºC, made for a cautious start. After six minutes of running most of the field had already exceeded the furthest distance women had ever previously run in an Olympic Games. The 1500m had only been included in the women’s Olympic programme since 1972.

The inaugural women’s Olympic Marathon, Los Angeles, USA. 5 August 1984 Joan Benoit had another reason for caution. Five months previously she had sustained a knee injury in her build-up to the US Olympic Trials selection race. Benoit was a clear favourite, having one year earlier set a course record in the Boston Marathon of 2:22:43. This was a ‘world best’ – two minutes faster than the time run by Grete Waitz in the London Marathon just one day earlier – but not a world record as the courses were not comparable. It remained the course record in Boston until 1994. US Olympic selections were made by sticking rigidly to a ‘first three past the post’ rule in the trial. This meant that Benoit had to run the trial only 17 days after having arthroscopic surgery. She recovered remarkably quickly, winning the trial in a modest time, but the Olympics were due three months later which allowed little time for recuperation. Distance Running | 2021 Edition 2

In the end the awareness of Benoit’s injury may have had greater consequences for her competitors than for herself. Fifteen minutes into the Olympic Marathon she opened up a gap on her pursuers. They seemed to collectively make a decision not to chase her. Benoit had slipped the leash and was away. She gradually increased her lead so that by 30km she led by nearly two minutes. Waitz and her compatriot Ingrid Kristiansen had become detached in Benoit’s wake but Kristiansen dropped back to leave Waitz in sole pursuit. From 30–33km she closed by 10 seconds but thereafter Benoit’s lead lessened only very slightly and, from Waitz’s perspective in pursuit, probably imperceptibly. The day’s drama had not yet played out in the stadium. Six women dropped out, mostly

suffering from symptoms of dehydration. Twenty minutes after Benoit finished 39-year-old Gabriela Andersen-Schiess, representing Switzerland, entered the stadium. It was quickly obvious to the entire stadium crowd that she was in distress. She had missed the last water station and, in a typical indication of dehydration, was unable to keep proper balance. She swayed and staggered along the track as medical personnel rushed to her side. Andersen-Schiess responded by waving them away. She was mentally alert enough to know that any contact with race personnel would lead to her disqualification and mentally focused enough to maintain her movement around the track. Medical officials were themselves alert to the fact that Schiess was still sweating – indicating that her condition might be better than outward appearances suggested.

heat Andersen-Schiess won the race in a course record of 2:36:22. She suffered no lasting effects from her Olympic ordeal, next day telling the New York Times that she would be competing in a 60km running and horseriding competition which, showing the same commitment and determination as she had in the Olympic Marathon, she did. But she never ran another competitive marathon. Benoit did. In 1985 she beat Ingrid Kristiansen, who had set a world record of 2:21:05 in London earlier in the year, to win the Chicago Marathon. Her time was 2:21:21 which remained an American record until 2003.

The crowd were living her struggle along with her as she heaved her contorted body forward, apparently cramping in her right leg and sometimes stopping as if to steady herself. It took her almost six minutes to complete the lap of the track – but complete it she did, to finish in 37th place with a time of 2:48:42. Gabriela “Gaby” Andersen-Schiess, born in Zürich in 1945, is 12 years older than Benoit. She was a long-distance runner who had been living in the Rocky Mountains and working as a ski instructor before being selected to represent Switzerland at the Games. During 1983 she had won the California International Marathon in Sacremento and the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis-St Paul. In Minneapolis she had faced conditions almost as torrid as those she later experienced at the Olympics. The race started at 15ºC but reached a maximum of 28ºC. While many suffered in the

Virtual races: here to stay? S M I

AIMS race organisers share their views

A

For the first few months of covid a virtual replacement ‘event’ often looked like the only way to offer runners a semblance of the races they had entered. It was a way to keep the faith and a means of communication with runners until normal service resumed. In autumn 2020 it looked like there might be a return to mass races within a few months, especially with vaccines becoming available. But this would only be in some places and subject to unforeseen setbacks. Race organisers now have to consider whether they will be able to stage an on-ground event, how much it may have to be modified or whether they will have to submit to a second successive race cancellation. The virtual event may again become the necessary fallback.

events in 2021. Virtual races give us a very powerful alternative: I believe we can increase overall participation. We will try to do both virtual and real but the important thing is to differentiate the value proposition.

John Addison VICtorIa Falls Marathon, ZIMbabwe

The value proposition and communication are very important to avoid hurting the value of the real event.

Andreas Maier VIenna CIty Marathon, austrIa

There is no better way of learning than through first-hand experience. Many organisers are finding that virtual races are more than a substitute for a racing reality and bring new possibilities to what they can offer their runners.

We started a completely new virtual Victoria Falls event and charged our sponsors for it while moving the 2020 real event and funding to 2021.

Below, in no particular order, AIMS race organisers explain what they have learnt about virtual races and how they might be of benefit to organisers and runners alike.

Runners needed something to aim at and we encountered a very positive attitude from them. In 2021 we may do a real and a virtual event, combined as a hybrid, so those who cannot travel are still offered a way to participate.

Renay Onur Istanbul Marathon, turkey

Future plans will likely include a hybrid event to get around travel issues – of any sort – and

Vienna City Marathon has been postponed to 12 September 2021 but has been holding socially-distanced events in the expansive Prater park in the centre of Vienna. I think that ‘real’ races will come back strongly, whenever the pandemic allows it, because it lies within human nature to come together, meet people and do something that exceeds the normal and everyday life. Istanbul Marathon was held on 8 November 2020, as scheduled, with a field limited to 4000. We wanted to keep the Istanbullians active and inspired during that unfortunate period [last year], providing targets to keep people focused. We tried to keep connected through our communication with runners.

I expect that we will see real races which incorporate virtual events or have them as an add-on, because travel restrictions might still be in place for some time to come.

in this way increase participation. Hybrids seem to be the way to go: we reckon 90% will be in-person and 10% virtual. The virtual edition will have to be good value and as ‘live’ as possible, so likely in real time. Real races are better and more atmospheric but a real-time virtual in parallel to a real race could be the way to go in the future – the technology is there.

Virtual challenges and races will stay with us in some shape or form post-covid as an extension for real races and as a way for motivating and engaging runners in the run-up to the bigger events.

We will be doing hybrid Distance Running | 2021 Edition 2

opinions Jozef Pulakovic bratIslaVa Marathon, sloVakIa

CSOB Bratislava Marathon try to organise attractive virtual races: not a “B option” for races which had to be postponed or cancelled but new events to create fresh air for runners in this dark period. Runners are motivated to complete tasks and many don’t like virtual events in general, but they are balanced by beginners who have started to run during covid because they needed to do something for their health. Many runners are having to adjust and virtual events are the only chance to motivate themselves – people wrote to us saying so.

Aigars Nords rIMI rIga Marathon, latVIa

Rimi Riga Marathon 2020 had to be cancelled at the last minute; we stepped into a virtual existence overnight. The Latvian Government issued a special law to prohibit all running events with more than 300 participants at 20.00 the night before the race. This set what might potentially be the world’s anti-record for making organisers and runners direct victims of a political decision. An event with more than 14,000 participants could no longer take place.

busier! Our sponsors have certainly gotten a better return to their investment due to the string of our virtual activities and additional sponsor activation possibilities. I do not think we’d be able to fulfil our sponsors’ expectations if we did not have anything to offer to compensate for the loss of all the in-person events – training programmes, running schools, etc. Our 2021 event has been postponed to 28–29 August with registration opening at the end of March. But even if we return to “normal” by August, we’ll certainly keep our Virtual Running Club as a perfect platform to keep our audiences busy and sponsors happy in between our “real” races. I am confident runners will want “real” experiences more than ever. However, our virtual races and challenges offer too good a proposition to be left out/forgotten. From now on the virtual marathon will always be part of our deal. We also aim to implement several virtual features in the race too.

Vivek Singh tata MuMbaI Marathon, IndIa

What saved us from a catastrophe was our Virtual Running Club, launched earlier that summer of 2020 with the help of Sports Heroes. Various virtual events and races organised during the summer had got our runners’ audience used to the idea of virtual running. We had held our Summer Championships with Paula Radcliffe and Jelena Prokopcuka “competing”, and various charity runs, walks and challenges involving up to 30 000 runners from the Baltic States. Switching to the virtual edition of the race

I’m sure that a lot of runners know that in these very hard times their solidarity and entry fee is important for us to survive this period. I am sure that, more than ever, good relationships with our runners will help us to get through this time. Around 40% of runners of CSOB Bratislava Marathon 2020 donated their entry fee after we had to postpone last year from April to September. Then in September we had to convert it to a virtual form only two weeks before the event, when everything was already prepared for the second time in one year. This year we had already decided to postpone the Bratislava Marathon to 5 September. Holding a virtual marathon would be Plan B – some partners have already asked us how we could deal with continuing uncertainty. For our flagship races we would like to offer only the classic experience, as long as the situation allows it. We understand that some older runners or women may be wary of participating in a huge mass of people. As race directors we have to explain to people so that they can themselves choose to follow us in virtual events or classic races or both. For example – we organised a virtual winter Valentines’ run this year and comparing it with the real edition in 2020 we doubled the numbers – so one never knows. I think Virtual runs allow some new concepts to be introduced. We created a virtual 5km run as a challenge between people in 29 different job categories and it was a real success. 40

Tata Mumbai Marathon is due to be held on 30 May 2021 with a field of a few thousand. overnight was as much a sign of runners’ solidarity with us, as it was the logical and only step to take. Although covid restrictions prevented international runners coming to Latvia many had already registered for the virtual edition – and we saw an immediate overnight increase in the numbers of unique registered users of our Virtual Club. All runners received the special finisher’s medals (irrespective of whether they finished the virtual edition or not) designed by Junichi Kawanichi, the designer behind Tokyo Olympic medals. Riga was full of runners on the Marathon day, many completed the exact course, many just went out to run for solidarity, thousands took photographs at the start gantry which stood at the Monument of Freedom throughout the weekend. In these uncertain times our Virtual Running Club is the best way to keep in touch with runners, since we continue to organise a very busy season of virtual Winter Races, sponsors’ challenges, etc. In fact, with the help of Virtual Running Club’s events we have never been

Virtual, app-assisted races is a growing new paradigm for Procam [Marathon organisers]. We had not yet invested in any of our races before the lockdowns came last year so virtual versions were not adopted to salvage investment already made. But it was vital for us to conduct our events in a virtual format as a way of maintaining relevance and connection with runners. Virtual was the best available option.

The virtual event is now a feature of all our races. We are postponing our early 2021 races so we can bring back the on-ground element. Virtual versions will continue as an additional aspect and if, for any reason, the on-ground does get cancelled the virtual will certainly help buttress the impact.

opinions We think it absolutely worthwhile to continue with the virtual as it allows our races to reach larger audiences. Especially our corporate partners who have offices across the country and around the world. This is an opportunity for them to engage their teams outside of the home city of the race. So our virtual races will be used as an employee-engagement tool far beyond what the on-ground race could offer. Serious runners will most likely be skeptical of virtual races but, at the same time, corporate challenges will most likely be the most engaged route for virtual races moving forward. We think that first-time runners will most likely embrace Virtual quite a bit. That’s our current view anyway.

together while we have to be apart. We’ve been challenged to completely re-think the meaning of “diversity and inclusion” in our sport. We’ve acknowledged that running, a sport that prides itself on democratically including everyone on our start lines regardless of talent or speed, may not be as inclusive as we assumed. There has definitely been a sense of solidarity among the core running community - but we can’t be sure if it extends much beyond that. Virtual events are here to stay. They are a positive result of the pandemic, offering convenience, an expanded reach and a special appeal to our charity runners who like the option of not having to get to our start lines dark, early, and often cold. We are launching our virtual races now (on going), and will make decisions on in-person races for July-December in the summer. Virtual races are not just necessary but a positive way of growing participation, revenue, charity fundraising, and collectively our community. They offer opportunities for runners and organisers and will be used to complement the real-life races. If ‘virtual’ has been the key word to describe 2020 then ‘hybrid’ will be the word that best characterises 2021. Hybrid races will offer a real-life race option for those willing and able to travel, and to commit to in-person gatherings, plus a virtual option for those more comfortable connecting at a distance. Virtual races have proved especially popular among charity runners and walkers; among people who’ve moved away but want to still be part of their hometown race; or those who want to travel to a Canada Running Series event but can’t do it this particular year.

Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is scheduled for 17 October 2021 Our mission at Canada Running Series is “building community through running” so our #1 goal was to try to stay connected, to offer content that would help keep our community together, motivated, engaged and moving forward. To that end we created virtual options for all eight of our CRS races, and we set up “Runner’s Hi” Facebook Live programmes with interviews with a variety of runners and coaches

We felt the solidarity of runners last year but we expect that in 2021 [if there is no in-person event] everyone will expect their money back or a place in the following edition. We would prefer to postpone rather than replace with a virtual race. Virtual alternatives are useful for communication, to stay in touch with the community but not for the money. A parallel virtual event may be of interest for foreign runners who are not able to travel but we expect to be on for autumn. Virtual races will be an additional side event, but will never replace the real one. In Lucerne one outcome was that we started a new concept called “run365”. This is a fixed course with timing points installed giving the chance to run 365 days a year and generate daily, weekly or monthly rankings. The goal is to connect with our community and gain new contacts.

When in-person races return, they will look different. They’ll be smaller and stripped down to reduce contact touch points, with lots of extra safety precautions. At first there are likely to be no bag check services, no post-race parties and awards, and packet-pick-up will be outdoors or via mailout. Lots of physical distancing, mandatory mask wearing and hand sanitizing.

The event team has been challenged like never before to create meaningful virtual experiences in an effort to keep our community running We did not do a virtual event for either of our races (Lake Tahoe in October 2020 and Maui Oceanfront in January 2021). I don’t believe in sending a finisher’s medal for a virtual race. Running at my event or another race event is special because of the socialization, the new [landscape], town or city you are running in. At the Lake Tahoe Marathon in October we will run a modified race without a mass start if Covid is still a big issue, and the same with Maui Oceanfront next January. Opinions Bohan Witwicki

In 2020 I organised the largest marathon run in Poland – and in safe conditions. There was no increase in infections after the event. I think this is the only way. We need a return to normalcy.

SILESIA MARATHON, POLAND

The Silesia Marathon is scheduled for 3 October 2021 I’m an “old” runner. I have been competing for 38 years and sometimes cover more than 20km in training – does that mean I have run a half marathon? Am I entitled to a medal? No.

Jim Aughney DUBLIN MARATHON, IRELAND

Competition should be in the traditional form known to us – both for the runners and for viewers. Seeing a lone runner in the park will not convince others to run but the sight of several thousand competitors always makes more people want to join in.

In Poland, after the first few virtual runs, nobody wants to start “virtually”. On social media runners clearly and critically express their opinions about virtual runs.

Our task is now to convince the decision-makers that running will not infect others, and running itself is the healthiest and simplest form of exercise. The scourge of the world is not Covid but obesity and lack of exercise. The virus does not kill slim, healthy people – such organisms will do well without a vaccine.

As an organiser (and runner), I have never planned to organise a virtual race. Someone who signs up for a run wants to take part in the event, run a specific route, and not cover kilometres on their daily training route.

I am against virtual racing; man is not a virtual being. We are social. Sport is competition. With their own weaknesses, with distance, with rivals. Conditions also matter. If I do a virtual run in Poland it could be at –8C and in snow while my friend in London may have dry roads and optimal temperature – and another participant can take off in Johannesburg in 30C and bright sunshine.

Honesty obliges me to return the starting fee if I cannot conduct the event. I understand that life forced many organisers to run virtual events – but it cannot become normal practice. The time for virtual runs is over and we should strive to develop standards in order to bring back safe events. The Dublin Marathon is scheduled for 24 October 2021 A virtual race in 2020 for us was the only means by which the finances of the race could be spared. The virtual edition gave runners a target they could still adhere to. If a real race can’t be held in 2021, or entries are severely restricted, or if runners are hesitant to take part, we will hold another virtual edition. In the long term I think runners will want the real events but if numbers allowed in the event do not permit all who are interested to take part they may take up the virtual race option

Country profile The postponed 2020 Olympics are due to be held in August 2021, eight years after Tokyo was confirmed as the host city. It is the third time that Tokyo has been awarded the Games, but on the first occasion the 1940 Games were cancelled because of the outbreak of hostilities in World War II. After a post-war hiatus it was not until 1964 that the Tokyo staged the Games of the 18th Olympiad.

A Japanese team first participated in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm and has attended 21 of the 23 Olympic Games held since then. Japan was excluded from the 1948 London Olympics and joined the US-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games. Japan won its first medals in 1920, and its first gold medals in 1928. It was at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 that, amid the unprecedented worldwide fanfare attending them, runners from Japanese-occupied Korea took gold and bronze medals in the Olympic Marathon. They were Sohn Kee-Chung and Nam Sung-Yong but were entered as Kitei Son and Nan Shoryu. Both were born in Korea but received higher education in Japan. Whether or not pre-war Olympic success had anything to do with it, in the immediate postwar period marathon running started to take off in Japan. The country had been devastated in the final stages of the War. Long distance running both in ‘Ekiden’ relay teams and in marathon races seemed to provide a means by which people picked themselves up and got back on their feet. Before the war, and for the decade after, Finland had remarkable success in distance running. This was sometimes put down to the Finnish concept of ‘Sisu’ as a facet of national character combining stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, resilience and hardiness. The war effort had perhaps cultivated such qualities in the Japanese population who applied themselves with good effect to endurance running. The main marathon races held in Japan to this day date from the immediate post-war years. The Lake Biwa Marathon was established in 1946 followed by the Koichi Marathon a year later. But it was the Fukuoka Marathon, first run in 1948, which increasingly became the lynchpin in the growing Japanese enthusiasm for Marathon running both as a participatory and as a spectator sport. While the races were being established in the 1940s and there was a mini-boom in participation it was not on the scale of that yet to come in the 1970s in North America and 1980s in Europe. It was focused around elite performance and more akin to the sudden expansion of participation by professional runners in East Africa in the 1990s and after. The Japanese version was restricted to committed runners and framed within a corporate club structure. A particularity of this upsurge of interest was that it extended beyond performers to spectators – and eventually to TV viewers – and so laid the economic basis for a more professional approach to competition. The most viewer-friendly running event was the ‘Ekiden’ road relay where supporters could 44

Distance running has taken hold of the Japanese population like nowhere else in the world follow a preferred team and fortunes could change dramatically from one stage to another to a much greater extent than in races between individual competitors. It was a convenient vehicle by which to promote a company and also provided a highly competitive yet cohesive training environment. Japanese marathon performances were building in the 1950s and Japan became dominant in the 1960s, averaging half of the world’s top-20 performers between 1962–69 (see graphic), in a similar way to what East Africans achieved 30 years later. Performances peaked in 1966 when 12 of the top 14 marathon performers were Japanese and all but one of the top-20 performances were in Japanese races. On 17 February 1963 Toru Terasawa set a world record of 2:15:16 in the Beppu-Oita Marathon. He went on to place second in the1964 Japanese Olympic trials and then 15th at the 1964 Olympics. Terasawa won the Fukuoka Marathon twice, setting a Japanese national record in 1962 (2:16:18.4) and again in 1964 (2:14:48.2). Morio Shigematsu set a world’s best in the marathon with a time of 2:12:00 at the Polytechnic Marathon (GBR) on 12 June 1965. Terasawa finished behind him in 2:13:41, the third fastest-ever performance at that time. Less than two months earlier he had set a course record at the 1965 Boston Marathon.

One tragic tale punctuated this halcyon period. In 1964 Kokichi Tsuburaya entered the stadium holding second place in the Tokyo Olympic Marathon. The winner, Abebe Bikila, had finished three minutes earlier and Britain’s Basil Heatley was not far behind him. He sprinted past, relegating Tsuburaya to the bronze medal. Tsuburaya was stricken by the defeat and told his team mate Kenji Kimihara, “I committed an inexcusable blunder in front of the Japanese people. I have to make amends by running and hoisting the flag in the next Olympics.” But before he got his chance Tsuburaya became afflicted with lumbago. He committed suicide during the build-up for the Mexico City Olympics. Kimihara competed in the marathon at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympics and finished in eighth, second and fifth places respectively. He won two gold medals in the marathon at the Asian Games in 1966 and 1970, and won the Boston Marathon in 1966. Japan had relatively few top-flight performances for most of the 1970s but in 1978 a trio of runners emerged who were to dominate for the next decade. Shigeru So had finished a modest 20th in the Montreal Olympic Games but in the 1978 Beppu-Oita Marathon ran a world record time of 2:09:06 (if Derek Clayton’s highly suspect 1969 mark in the Antwerp Marathon is ignored). His twin brother Takeshi ran a faster personal best (2:08:55) in 1983 and went on to finish fourth in the 1984 Olympic Marathon.

Naoko Takahashi celebrates winning Olympic Gold in Sydney 2000

Just months after the Tokyo race the Nagoya International Women’s Half Marathon was established, and switched to the marathon distance in 1984. The Osaka International Ladies’ Marathon started up in 1982. All three races attracted an exclusive top-quality international field from the outset, playing a similar role for the women’s marathon as Fukuoka had done for the men’s. The international outlook of the Japanese Federation found a partner in AIMS, set up in 1982 as an association of marathon race organisers acting independently of the IAAF – which, despite former President Paulen’s early backing, had been dismissive of the new mass participation sport of distance running. The outwardly unlikely alliance was in large part due to the personal interest of Hiroaki Chosa who became Vice-President of AIMS at foundation and President from 1990–2010. It took until the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Marathon until Japan got back among the medals. In another close endgame Koichi Morishita was dropped in the last kilometre to finish second with other Japanese in 4th and 8th. Likewise in the women’s race: Yuko Arimori was dropped by Valentina Yegorova near the end and finished eight seconds behind with Sachiko Yamashita in fourth place. Arimori won Japan’s first medal in the women’s marathon – and the second, a bronze, four years later in Atlanta. There she again finished behind Yegorova, but with Ethiopia’s Fatuma Roba winning gold with two minutes to spare.

Toshihiko Seko won the 1980 Fukuoka Marathon in 2:09:45, just four seconds ahead of Takeshi So. This was the first time that two men had ever run under 2:10 in the same race. The Fukuoka Marathon’s significance was confirmed the following year when the Australian runner Rob de Castella ran a new world record of 2:08:18 there. Seko won Fukuoka four times, Boston twice and was also victorious in Tokyo, London and Chicago but performed below par at both the 1984 (14th) and 1988 Olympics (9th). By the late 1970s women were finally breaking down the gender barrier to running long distances. The Avon Series included an annual women’s marathon held in various locations throughout the world, from 1978-1984, and sponsored by the giant global cosmetics company. The Japanese Athletics Federation were quick to establish a women-only Marathon in Tokyo, held for the first time in November 1979. Being federation-led was important, as it became the first women’s marathon officially sanctioned by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). Adrian Paulen, IAAF President, attended the race and gave his support for a women’s marathon to be added to the Olympic programme.

The women took Japan’s Olympic success to new heights at the Sydney Olympics when Naoko Takahashi won gold in a new Olympic Record of 2:23:12. She went on to become the first woman to break the 2-hour 20-minute barrier when she set a world record of 2:19:46 in the 2001 Berlin Marathon.

Mizuko Noguchi took the baton from Takahashi, winning both the 2002 Nagoya and 2003 Osaka Women’s Marathons before taking the silver medal at the 2003 World Championships. Then in 2004 she beat World Champion Catherine Ndereba and world record holder Paula Radcliffe to become the Olympic champion at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Year Mizuko Noguchi in Athens 2004, about to win Japan’s last Olympic Marathon medal to date, with 200m left to run

5th and 6th. Like Takahashi before her Noguchi went on to win the Berlin Marathon the following year (2005) beating Takahashi’s time to set a new course record of 2:19:12. Japan has not garnered any more Olympic medals in the Marathon since Noguchi’s win in Athens but within Japan the face of the sport has changed dramatically. In 2007 the Tokyo Marathon switched from being an elite event of a few dozen runners to a mass race of 25,000 participants. AIMS President Hiroaki Chosa played a significant part, through his international contacts, in preparing the ground for this momentous change. The flagship elite-only Japanese Marathons had joined AIMS from the outset and since the emergence of mass marathons AIMS membership in Japan has steadily grown to reach 25. Other races followed Tokyo’s example and consolidated elite competition within mass races. It had been increasingly hard to find elite-only races until in 2020 coronavirus conditions put a stop on mass sporting events during which eliteonly events have had a temporary resurgence. On 28 February 2021 the venerable Lake Biwa Marathon staged its final edition before a

planned merger with the Osaka Marathon. The cancellation of other races focused the Japanese elite men on this one race and a startling 42 of them ran faster than 2 hours 10 minutes. This shows the great strength in depth of Japanese distance running despite the lack of Olympic medals and lack of performers among the annual world top-20 ranked runners in recent years (see graphic). This is a strength very different to what Japan enjoyed in the 1960s before the emergence of East Africa as the new powerhouse of elite performance in distance running. The continuing popularity of distance running as a spectator sport in Japan is unrivalled anywhere else in the world. The strength of student and corporate teams and the excitement generated by the Ekiden format wins huge viewing figures on Japanese national television. Elite performance is built on this firm foundation. The postponed 2020 Olympic Games gives Japanese runners another shot at the podium with the pandemic conditions possibly assisting their efforts. But, even without the boost that this would surely give, Japan shows no sign of relinquishing its love affair with the Marathon.

The table above serves to emphasise the difference in the number of top-class performances run in the first 12 weeks of each of the last three years. 2019 was the last full quarter for races. The spring season of 2020 had hardly started before the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to it. This year, with a few exceptions, races have been held in modified format and usually with very small fields and often restricted to those nationally domiciled. Most of the ranking lists have this year been drawn from the results of a single race. Women’s marathon results came from three races and those for the Women’s Half Marathon from

' $ `OQSa !' & `OQSa "! `OQSa

six races – yet 1 and 4 of these respectively were more like timed training runs than races. Last year lists were drawn from between 8–10 races (except for the 10km where most top times usually come from only one or two races) little different to the ‘normal’ conditions of 2019. The 2021 figures appear surprisingly good only due to one men’s and two women’s standout races held in Japan which supplied all but four of the above Marathon rankings. Not only that but the Nagoya race, with 5000 women and another 9000 runners in the associated half marathon, demonstrates that it is again becoming possible to hold mass events even though few are planned until September.
