As the Covid pandemic continues to limit the form in which races can take place many organisers are again staging ‘live’ races.
an encouraging sign. Even against a background where there are limited possibilities for runners to travel to races in other countries optimism for the future is evident.
These are most often supported by virtual events to extend the numbers which can be accommodated. But in some places restrictions are lessening and organisers can anticipate participation levels getting back to pre-covid levels next year – with a step towards that being made in races to be held later this year.

AIMS news Lives remembered
Ron Hill Ron Hill, a former European and Commonwealth Champion in the Marathon, died on 22 May 2021 aged 82. Sometimes known as “Mr Marathon”, Ron held together a streak of running at least one mile every day which lasted for more than 52 years. He was not just a world record breaking marathon runner but a true innovator in a sport which had been bound by tradition for decades. He was the second man to break 2:10 in the marathon. He set four world records at less-recognised distances but never laid claim to the marathon world record. He could have done so through his 2:09:28 win at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh as there was always serious doubt over the accuracy of the course in Antwerp on which Derek Clayton had recorded 2:08:33.4 the previous year. While he was competing at the highest level, but at a time when there was no financial reward for performance, he graduated from the University of Manchester with a PhD in textile chemistry and pioneered production of specialist clothing for runners through his Ron Hill Sports company. In common with many British distance runners of the time Hill started by running cross country in the winter and track in the summer. In 1963 he equalled the British record for six miles at the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) championships with a time of 27:49.8. He competed at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo finishing 18th in the 10000m (29:53) and 19th in
23rd World Congress of AIMS The 23rd World Congress of AIMS will take place in Osaka from 23–25 February 2023, followed by the Osaka Marathon on 26 February,
the marathon (2:25:35). He set his first world record by running 1:15:22.6 for 25km, more than a minute faster than the previous best by Emil Zatopek. He set a world record of 1:12:48.2 for 15 miles ‘en passant’ during the same race. Hill finished 12th in the 1966 European Championships Marathon in Budapest. On the UK domestic scene he dominated the 10-mile event by winning the AAA championships every year from 1965-1968 and in the 1968 race setting a world record of 47:02.2. That summer he finished seventh in the Marathon at the 1968 Mexico Olympics before again lowering the 10-mile world record to 46:44. Hill won the 1969 European Championships Marathon on the classic but notoriously tough Marathon-toAthens course. The following year he was at the peak of his powers with his sub-2:10 Commonwealth win preceded by victory in the 1970 Boston Marathon with a new course record of 2:10:30, an improvement of three minutes. In Edinburgh Hill passed through 10km in 29:24, a pace described as ‘suicidal’ (projected as 2:04 for the full distance). On the strength of his Boston and Edinburgh wins Hill was ranked by Track & Field News as top marathoner in the world for 1970. The next year he was honoured with the Order of the British Empire for “services to athletics”. His final Olympics was at the 1972 Munich Games where he finished sixth in the marathon at the age of 33. Hill had graduated with his PhD in 1970 and established his company. It started to put out a range of innovative new items of clothing that
Ron Hill survives his ‘suicidal’ early pace to win the 1970 Commonwealth Games Marathon in Edinburgh in 2:09:28. Picture courtesy of Ronhill Sports
very quickly became adopted as standard requirements: “Freedom” shorts; the iconic string vest that he had worn in competition; waterproof running tops with reflective strips; and the enormously popular ‘Ron Hill tracksters’ which, along with Hely Hansen thermal tops, passed into the British running vernacular. Hill says he founded the company “because I was running to and from work in the dark in winter and wondered what I needed to stay safe.” Sales at one point topped £6 million but Hill ran into financial difficulties in the early 1990s and sold out. He later founded another company, ‘Hilly Clothing’, which among other items specialises in technical socks. Ron Hill started running when the conventional wisdom was that good nutrition consisted of a pre-race steak. Yet he developed the carbohydrate bleed-out and boost diet for Marathon runners to raise muscle glycogen levels in the week before the race. The popular legacy of his innovation survives in the pre-race pasta parties of today’s mass marathons. According to Hill’s running logs he started training on consecutive days on 20 December 1964 and did not default on it until 30 January 2017, 52 years and 39
days later. He defined a run as covering at least one mile at any pace. His streak included postoperative workouts on crutches. By April 2014 he claimed to have run 159,106.5 miles. His ‘streak’ ended in 2017 with the announcement on his Facebook page that “Due to ill health Ron has decided to take a day off”. He reached his goal of racing in 100 countries before his 70th birthday with races in Panama and the Faroe Islands. His final marathon was the centennial Boston Marathon in 1996. He completed 115 marathons and recorded 21 marathon victories. In November 2019, in the 50th year since his European Championships victory, Ron Hill attended the Athens Marathon and the AIMS ‘Best Marathon Runner’ Gala as guest of honour and was moved to tears by the enthusiastic and sustained standing ovation he received.

Dr. Florian Kainzinger, expert for hygiene concepts and test scenarios, referred to the great advantage of outdoor events in contrast to indoor events or seated situations. Studies from the previous weeks had shown that virus infection is an indoor problem. Physicist and aerosol researcher Dr. Gerhard Scheuch even went one step further and spoke of “open air instead of lockdowns” to further push the drop in incidences, because almost no infections occur outside closed rooms.

Berlin lays painstaking plans to host 35,000 participants Confidence, a lot of confidence, currently reigns in Berlin after the hybrid press conference that took place there in June called “The long-awaited restart of running together. Of course, safely!” Restart Running is the name of a pilot project that is intended to guarantee the return of major running events. By staging the adidas Runners City Night, the Generali Berlin Half Marathon and the BMW Berlin-Marathon, the aim is to gain know-how and create perspectives in the period from the end of July until autumn of 2021. The knowledge gained will then be incorporated into decision-making processes for the gradual reopening of public life including all major sporting events.
concepts and clear framework conditions are the key to how large sporting events can be held safely and responsibly in times of a pandemic. He concurred that participation for runners on the basis of “tested, vaccinated or recovered” seems quite possible. Senator Geisel added that “The traditional running events bring together top-level and amateur athletes in our sports metropolis. With pilot projects we gain knowhow and create perspectives on how to conduct major sporting events safely and responsibly in times of a pandemic. We are taking the first steps back to normality. Things are looking good at the moment, but we seek to look into the future. Everything depends on the development of the infection statistics, including the question of whether spectators can be admitted.”
Marcel Altenburg (crowd management expert at Manchester Metropolitan University) is jointly responsible for the safe management of crowd flows at the world’s largest sporting events. The academic, who was connected via livestream and was visibly impressed by the hygiene concept presented, expressed his excitement about collaborating at the upcoming running events as part of the pilot project. Describing his experiences of the last few months, he said: “Since autumn 2020, we have been supporting more than 50 events worldwide through the University – all events were successful and were assessed as safe in retrospect. This shows above all the enormous influence that organisers can have on the movement of people in a controlled environment. The system in Berlin will be set up so that individuals will always have enough space to feel comfortable and be able to comply with applicable recommendations. By moving forward, each runner is constantly creating space for the next runners. This has to be coordinated. Cooperation with the local authorities is also indispensable in this regard as re-emphasised by Jürgen Lock.” ■ www.bmw-berlin-marathon.com
The lynchpin of the pilot project is the health and hygiene concept developed by the organiser SCC Events under managing director Jurgen Lock. It amounts to almost 150 pages. For more than nine months Lock has been working on the draft with a highly competent committee of experts. At the press conference he summed it up as follows: “Since the beginning of April, based on our concept and implementation analysis, we are confident that the path we have chosen for our Restart Running is the right one. The concept is based on three elements: recovered, vaccinated, tested. The participants will have constant support through all the phases of the event so it will be easy – almost like a normal event of old.” The pneumologist and Medical Director of the Berlin Marathon, Dr. med. Matthias Krüll, who was also present, confirmed the high scientific standards of the hygiene concept and emphasised its easy practicality. Andreas Geisel, Senator for the Interior and Sport of Berlin, confirmed that viable hygiene Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3

For the first time in the race’s history a hybrid event will be offered featuring a virtual run in parallel with the on-site event. This will allow every female runner who wants to take part to do so irrespective of the COVID-19 situation and whether it is possible to travel or not. True to our motto: “We run to move” it’s about more than running. It’s about solidarity, courage, recognition and setting goals – together we can achieve them. “Running made me brave and strong. And this is what I want for all women and girls out there,” says founder and event organiser Ilse Dippmann. “Join us, get inspired and make a strong statement for women and girls.” Dippmann organised the Austrian Women’s Run for the first time in 1988 with 440 women and girls taking part. The Women’s Run had attracted more than 30,000 runners for eight successive years before the impact of COVID-19 brought the curtain down on the 2020 event. This makes it one of the world’s largest sporting events for women.
The course is in the beautiful green oasis, the Prater. The flat, fast course is within sight of Vienna’s world-famous Giant Ferris Wheel – and you can run in the footsteps of Eliud Kipchoge, who posted his barrier-breaking 1:59:40.2 time for the marathon distance here in October 2019.

Personal attention to every runner in the city of Rembrandt
The Leiden loop The Leiden Marathon has a picturesque course that combines the best of the city and countryside in the Green Heart of The Netherlands. This loop course is flat and fast, giving you the chance to improve your personal best. The race starts in the heart of ancient Leiden, the 900-year old city of Rembrandt, and takes you on a sightseeing tour through nine beautiful villages with traditional polders (land reclaimed from the sea), windmills and cows staring curiously at you while you run by. Enjoy the superb organisation and exciting atmosphere aided by the enthusiastic spectators lining the streets as Leiden Marathon celebrates its 30th edition – not in May 2020 or May 2021 but, after a long wait – you know the reason, on 10 October 2021. The Leiden Marathon is known for personal attention towards every runner, enthusiastic spectators and its fine atmosphere. It has the most beautiful course in The Netherlands, with the start and finish in the middle of the ancient city where Rembrandt was born and the Pilgrims lived for 12 years. The Marathon has been held annually in Leiden since 1991. For participants in the full marathon a time limit of six hours applies.
The 42.195km is run in one extended loop. Other distances offered include a half marathon with 5500 runners, a 10km (5000), a 5km (1500) and a kids’ run (1500). In 2019 the various races of the Leiden Marathon event had more than 14,000 runners – a thousand of them in the Marathon itself - and on the Saturday 2000 walkers walk on the same route.
and those of the surrounding municipalities enthusiastically embraced the very first Leiden Marathon held on 16 June 1991 it was clear that a wonderful sporting event had been born, which has since grown to become a mature marathon with international appeal. ■ www.marathon.nl
The Leiden Marathon was started by the Leiden Road Runners Club after some of its members travelled to New York for their first experience of a marathon. When they came back they decided to organise a marathon in their home town. The Leideners were so impressed by the atmosphere and organisation in New York that they took it as an example on which to model their own event. The team of 48 runners who went to New York came from 3M Netherlands, and was known as the 3M Marathon Team. The Leiden Road Runners Club was set up as an independent club after the New York trip. They presented a plan for a local marathon to the management board of 3M. The plan was approved, and 3M sponsored the event for the next 10 years. Looking ahead | 31 October 2021 Swiss City Marathon – Lucerne, Switzerland The SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne is a relative youngster on the running event scene but, after a handful of editions, the event quickly established itself as a constant in the running calendar. The first “Lucerne Marathon” in 2007 had around 5000 runners and continued to develop steadily until it became today’s “SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne” with 11,000 runners. At its heart lies the unique course which combines the so-called “City of Lights” (Lucerne) the marvellous Lake Lucerne and the impressive Swiss Alps. This route creates unforgettable experiences and memories for the participants. Thanks to the support of the population and the numerous volunteers an enthusiastic atmosphere is created that accompanies the runners constantly. The event would be inconceivable without the support of the authorities and sponsors brought together by the organising committee who work at full power to offer runners a change from what they have had before - each year is a unique experience:
A decade of innovations
Short history, big developments

But what happens in 2021? It is certain that a different marathon will take place and this is a challenge that the OC has fully embraced. Plans are being made for individual starts, adapted running routes and alternative start number distribution. All the necessary hygiene and protection measures will be implemented. The goal is to put on a sporting event for the public that is constantly evolving and that ensures unforgettable experiences. Recognised for impeccable organisation on a scenic course managed by the US Marines in Arlington, Virginia and the nation’s capital, the Marine Corps Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the world – and the largest of all that does not offer prize money. “The People’s Marathon” has been voted “Best Marathon for Beginners”, “Best Marathon for Charities” and “Best Spectator Event.” Hosted annually in the national capital and in nearby Arlington the MCM offers an experience for runners to tour the nation’s most recognisable landmarks while being supported by the men and women of the United States Marine Corps.
Full colours Follow the scenic autumn route
The course begins in Arlington near the Pentagon and moves through Rosslyn crossing the Key Bridge into historic Georgetown. The course passes the Kennedy Center, Theodore Roosevelt Bridge and the Lincoln Memorial and follows the scenic Potomac River to the Tidal Basin with views of the Jefferson Memorial. Runners continue on Independence Avenue and will be able to view the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial, FDR Memorial along the National Mall and the Korean WWII Memorial and Washington Monument. The course continues with views of the National Museum of American History and Culture, National Museum of Natural History, the National Art Gallery and the Capitol. On their way back to Arlington runners will be able to view Crystal Drive where there is a lot of energy and colours on display to entertain the runners. From there runners pass the Pentagon again and make their way up to the finish at the US Marine Corps War Memorial. The excitement of completing the race will be celebrated in the post-event Finish Festival in Rosslyn, VA. Essential services, food from several Rosslyn eateries, live music, sponsor displays and exciting giveaways await runners and spectators as they make their way down Mead Street to Metro or their hotel.
The course is on a spectacular scenic route during the colourful time of fall and is enjoyed by both runners and spectators. Public transportation allows spectators to view their runner at many points along the route. MCM weekend has become a family experience by offering several events which allow the whole family to participate. The MCM10K and MCM50K occur on the same day as the MCM and share part of the same course. The MCM50K is the largest urban ultra in the nation. On Saturday, before the MCM and MCM10K, we offer one of the largest kids events; the MCM Kids Run, a one-mile run with many fun kid-related activities. Prior to the MCM day a carb-load feast is offered and a two-day expo precedes the running events. Many runners choose our race to make a vacation out of it. Visitors come to the city to enjoy the free museums, easy-to-use public
transportation and the many historic and chic hotels. Most sites are within walking distance on the Washington DC Mall. There are three airports close to the city. Every year the MCM hosts runners from all 50 states and more than 60 countries. Back in 1994 talk show host Oprah Winfrey ran her first marathon with the Marines to celebrate her 40th birthday. Wearing bib #40, Winfrey finished the MCM with a famous time of 4:29:15 and started a boom in women’s running. ■ www.marinemarathon.com Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3

Looking ahead | 6 November 2021 3-Sjøersløpet (The 3 Lakes Race), Norway 3-Sjøersløpet is a picturesque end-ofseason half marathon. The route is mostly on gravel alongside three different lakes; hence the name 3-Sjøersløpet (3 Lakes Race). The event takes place in Stavanger at the southern end of Norway’s long west coast. The race was started in 2006. The first Saturday in November was chosen to offer a race at the end of the running season. Due to the mild climate on the southwest coast in Norway the temperature is perfect for running at this time of the year; typically 6–8ºC. 137 runners completed the first race but its popularity rapidly outgrew the venue. A large exhibition hall was needed to serve the runners before and after the race. The start and finish line is adjacent to the hall. Finisher numbers have risen to 2,300. The 15-year anniversary was meant to be held last year but stricter covid regulations were introduced just two days before the race and even the downsized event planned had to be cancelled. We now look forward to celebrating the anniversary in 2021. Between projected finish times of 1:25 and 2:30, there is a race pacer every five minutes. This is really appreciated by the participants who find it of great help in reaching their target times. The race pacers are well known for their friendly and supportive approach. The lakes are Stavanger’s most popular running spot thanks to their beauty and the surrounding nature. We believe we can lay claim to offering Norway’s most beautiful half marathon. Around 80% of the route is on gravel which provides a very good running surface. Due to its end of season date, prize money and being one of the country’s biggest half marathons, the race attracts many of Norway’s best long-distance runners. The course records are held by Ørjan Grønnevig (1:05:02) and Pernilla Epland (1:14:35). After 16km, when most start to tire, runners meet a 550m hill. Tackling this challenge and completing the race contributes to the incredible feeling of achievement. The last hurdle before the finish line is to run up to a
Norway’s ‘most beautiful’ half marathon by the seaside
End of season Nordic atmosphere bicycle roundabout, which is decorated with tiles in different colours and where there are lots of people cheering you on and waving the national flag. The race has a long tradition of offering a stew to the participants after the race. The hot food tastes really great inside the heated exhibition hall. Every participant gets a medal and can buy a t-shirt as a souvenir from the race. This year’s race will bring an increased focus on recycling. Norway means “the way to the North”, as characterised by the long coastline. Home of the Vikings, the country is nowadays known for its Nordic welfare model and its high standard of living. We are currently blessed with having two top-class international athletes, the local hero Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Karsten Warholm. Stavanger is Norway’s fourth largest city. It has thrived because of the energy industry, which has its national centre here. The city is characterised by its seaside location, its many low wooden houses and the small but pleasant downtown area. ■ www.3sjoers.no/en/

Looking ahead | 26 November 2021 Eilat Desert Marathon, Israel
Into the wilderness Stunning and challenging course through desert scenery
Daybreak. The horizon to the east, over the top of the Edom Mountains, changes colour from dark blue to purple to deep red. The sun will soon peek over the mountains but here in Eilat the boardwalk is already humming with the excitement of thousands of runners in colourful running gear waiting to run into the wilderness along the tracks of the Negev. It’s another edition of the challenging International Desert Marathon. There are hundreds of marathons around the world, each with its own uniqueness and own degree of difficulty, but there are not many marathons that are a weekend-long sporting event for professionals and amateurs alike; for
those who run alone and those who come with the whole family. At the Desert Marathon in Eilat you can see the thousands of participants smiling before, during and after the race. Unlike urban marathons or off-road events, where streets or areas are closed and where the runners gather, run, finish and then leave, the event in Eilat is a weekend of continuous experiences and fun. The city becomes a large runners’ village. The Desert Marathon offers four different distances: a full 42.2km marathon, a half marathon and 10km and 5km routes. The marathon and half-marathon are run over a stunning and challenging course which takes runners out of the city and into the Negev trails, through beautiful desert scenery, up hills and
down ravines and through dry wadis to end on the sparkling shores of the Red Sea. Finishers, and especially the first timers, all describe the course as “amazing”, “unique” or just “wow!”. They also mention the sense of quiet they experienced along the desert route. But once they return to the city limits and the finish line, the party continues. The International Desert Marathon was supposed to celebrate its 10th anniversary last year but the event was cancelled due to Covid-19. This year there will be yet another reason to celebrate. “The Desert Marathon attracts more and more people every year,” says Ofer Padan, founder of “Marathon Israel” which created and produces the event in collaboration with the Eilat Municipality. “Over the years we have seen a steady increase of runners, especially from overseas. Runners from Europe can leave the cold weather behind and fly direct to Eilat. Within a few hours they are in the sunny desert and set for an amazing race.” There is a surprisingly high proportion of female runners – almost 50-50. “At first there were only 10% women. I think the growing figures speak for themselves,” says Padan. The range of activities surrounding the race begins the evening before with a “flag parade”. Contestants from around the world are invited to proudly carry their national flag, and the evening continues with a large pre-race pasta dinner. After the race, still in the morning, the winner’s ceremony is followed by an array of sporting activities for the entire family, Pilates and yoga sessions at sunset and then a party which continues long into the night… ■ www.desertrun.co.il Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3

Looking ahead | 5 December 2021 Discoveries Half Marathon, Portugal
Discoveries past and present Find history and culture in the European capital of sport The Half-Marathon of the Discoveries commemorates the epic voyages undertaken by Portuguese explorers in the late 15th and early 16th centuries to open up sea routes to Asia and the Americas. It is undoubtedly one of the richest periods of Portuguese history in which ‘new worlds’ were introduced to Europe. Taking advantage of the long-distance tradition in Portugal, inspired by the Olympic Marathon victories of Carlos Lopes and Rosa Mota (1984, 1988) and by Lisbon’s favourable all-year-round climate, this event was created in December 2013. Its main objective is to mark the discoveries of five centuries ago and attract tourists to Lisbon to discover the historical and cultural qualities of the city, its gastronomic wealth and the hospitality of its people. The race starts and finishes at Praça do Império, located in the Belém neighborhood, from where the ‘Discoverers’ set sail. There lies the Jerónimos Monastery, built by King D Manuel I at the end of the 15th century; the Torre de Belém – a maritime fortification built between 1514–1520 which is one of the symbols of the city; and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, or Monuments of the Navigators more recently built in 1960 as a tribute to sailors that manned the caravels. All these monuments are clustered on the right bank of the River Tagus, the main axis of communication with the Atlantic Ocean, through
which the fragile vessels of that time departed, destined to conquer the ‘new’ world. Although Lisbon is known as the city of the seven hills the race route is almost completely flat as it traces an out-and-back course along the embankment of the Tagus. The turnaround point is in Praça do Comércio, in the city’s ‘gridiron’ centre built after the great earthquake of 1755 and now a great part of the city’s picturesque appeal. The race programme also includes a 10km run and another 5km fun run (or walk) intended to involve the largest possible number of participants. This turns the first Sunday of December into a big street party. This year’s edition, after last year’s interruption from the covid-19 pandemic, is eagerly anticipated as one of those scheduled for the post-pandemic period. which has kept the world in check for the last year. Portugal is among the first few countries in the world to achieve favourable indicators in the control of the disease which makes it attractive as a safe destination. Lisbon was chosen this year as the European Capital of Sport with the objectives of projecting the city through international and national competitions; recognising the importance of physical
activity and sport in building a human, modern and sustainable city; and promoting healthy living habits and physical activity. This continues the strategic investment made in promotion of Lisbon as European Green Capital 2020. This year’s objectives are to promote the full use of all green infrastructures, bike lanes and outdoor sports spaces and to increase the quality of life of citizens and all those who visit the city. The race is organised by Xistarca, a pioneer of road running in Portugal having previously staged 27 editions of the Lisbon Marathon. Come to Lisbon and enjoy one of the best races of its kind in Europe. ■ discoverieshalfmarathon.weebly.com Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3

Looking ahead | 10 December 2021 Sea of Galilee Tiberias Marathon, Israel
Run on the shores of the Sea of Galilee
Feel the spirit Run along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, Israel’s largest freshwater lake, in one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in Israel. Run in an international Marathon that hosts the best and fastest longdistance runners. Come for the view, the vibe and the course. Set a new marathon record in the Sylvan Adams Tiberias Marathon in December. The Tiberias Marathon has been held every year since 1977 and serves as the official Israeli marathon championship, with the flattest and fastest course in Israel. Over the years many run-
ners from Israel and from all over the world have run their best times in the Tiberias Marathon. This unique marathon draws local and international runners of all levels. The highlight is the marathon, alongside the Sea of Galilee, on a flat course with almost no curves and ideal Israeliwinter weather of 13°C and usually rain-free. The event also offers a Half Marathon, 10km and 5km courses. The number of participants across all distances is increasing each year and is expected to reach 10,000 runners from 20 different countries. Tiberias is the only city on the shores of the Sea of Galilee (‘Kinneret’ in Hebrew), a deep blue lake situated in the Jordan Valley and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The city was founded in 20 AD by Herod Antipas and was named after the Roman emperor Tiberius. It is today an important tourist centre and has religious sanctity for both Judaism and Christianity. With its combination of ancient and modern landscapes, you can see all aspects of the Israeli population, taste worldly flavours and feel the historic spirit of the city. Runners coming from abroad should reserve accommodation on the selected dates so that
they can enjoy a weekend in the northern part of Israel and experience the spirit of the city, water recreations and historic sites. When runners arrive in Tiberias they find that the whole city is dressed up in special marathonholiday costume, just for the event. Runners are invited to attend the race EXPO where they can find booths from leading worldwide sports brands and pick up race kit that includes the official running shirt, a running bib and many perks and benefits from the sponsors of the event. All courses start from the centre of Tiberias and follow the beautiful route along the Sea of Galilee. Pacers from leading Israeli running clubs are placed in the starting waves. The marathon is professionally organised, adheres to strict guidelines and is broadcast in local and global media. At the finish line runners receive a finisher’s medal and can enjoy a variety of refreshments and snacks. The marathon might be the highlight but after finishing it you have the whole weekend to enjoy the amazing city of Tiberias. ■ www.tiberiasmarathon.com

Marathon moments Rotterdam Marathon, 9 April 1983
Three weeks before their clash in Rotterdam: Carlos Lopes (293) finished second in the World Cross Country while Rob De Castella (15) took fourth place. Pictures: Getty
The early 1980s were golden years for marathon running. Many races throughout the world had followed the example set by New York in 1976 by expanding onto the streets of major capitals. Instead of the few hundred runners who had previously entered race organisers began to count their numbers in the tens of thousands – and even then had to reject most applicants for lack of capacity. Marathons in Stockholm, Barcelona and London were explicitly modelled using the New York prototype but most sought to find courses that, while remaining scenic and touristic, were flatter and faster. The ‘world best’- a phrasing meant to reflect how much courses on which marathons were run could vary – had been set by Alberto Salazar (USA) in winning his second New York title on 25 October 1981 in 2:08:13. The New York course wasn’t easy, with significant climbs at the start, at 25km and something of a switchback over the last 5km in Central Park. Rotterdam emerged as a course on which faster times could be run compared to the much more variable inclines on the New York and London courses. The inaugural race was held in on 23 May 1981, won by the British runner John Graham in 2:09:28. It was clear from the start that it was a course on which a ‘world best’ could be set and this is what the organisers were targeting. It was only in 1985 that the New York course was found to be about 150m shorter than the prescribed 42195m, so the task was in fact a little more difficult than it might have appeared. Six weeks after Salazar’s performance in New York the Australian Rob de Castella had won the Fukuoka Marathon on 6 December in 2:08:18. This was the de facto world best mark of the time although it did not become recognised as such until 1985. Fellow Australian Derek Clayton had been the first man to go under 2:10 in setting a world best time of 2:09:36 in Fukuoka back in 1967. Two years later he 34

Sprinting up the hill The emergence of world-best times in the 1980s improved this mark to 2:08:33.6 – the mark Salazar thought was the one to beat – but on a course in Antwerp which was widely regarded as short. Since those two standout performances both Salazar and de Castella had followed up with wins in 1982, de Castella taking the Commonwealth Games title in Brisbane in 2:09:18 and Salazar narrowly winning the Boston Marathon in 2:08:52 and taking his third consecutive New York Marathon title in 2:09:29. In putting together the elite field for the 1983 Rotterdam Marathon the organisers could bill a ‘clash of the Titans’ in the match-up between Salazar and de Castella. They were without doubt the two leading contenders in marathon running at the time. Thirty-six years before Eliud Kipchoge’s “1:59 Challenge” took place in Vienna, the Rotterdam organisers were thinking along similar lines. Unlike the point-to-point races, which were already getting close to 20,000 runners, Rotterdam limited their field to 4000 so that the race could be run on a course featuring a large lap within woodlands which protected runners from the wind, run three times.
In New York and in Fukuoka neither Salazar nor de Castella had been paced. They had lined up against genuine competitors who were there to perform to their individual best. There was no one in either race prepared to act as a workhorse for them. Pacemakers had become common on stadium athletics tracks for events from 800m upward – most famously to assist Roger Bannister in running the first sub 4-minute mile – but they were still practically unknown in marathons. As another measure towards securing the world best time Rotterdam brought in John Graham to ensure that the early pace did not fall off world record schedule. For someone the press often considered brash, Salazar parried pre-race questions with what almost appeared to be self-doubt: “You never know for sure – a lot of things can happen in 26 miles”. Neither was de Castella bigging himself up: “Pressure is a personal thing that you put on yourself,” he declared. The scenes on the startline would look chaotic compared to what happens today. Runners of modest credentials would use their elbows to try to force themselves onto the front rank for the best possible position when the gun went and the top runners had to contend with them as
Marathon moments Rotterdam Marathon, 9 April 1983 had then suffered a long period off with injury. He returned in 1982 to set a European 10,000m record and finish second in the world cross country on 20 March 1983 – ahead of Salazar and de Castella who finished 4th and 6th – just three weeks before the Rotterdam race. Coming from a track background Lopes had great speed but rarely seemed to find enough at the finish to burn off opponents who were still with him on the last lap. “It wasn’t until two or three kilometres later [after ‘sprinting up the hill’] that I realised we had broken away Lopes and I, and we were the only ones – everyone else had dropped off,” said de Castella. “For the whole last 5km he was on my shoulder, running right by my side. I was trying everything to get rid of him but he was hanging in there almost as a shadow. Once or twice I eased back to try to get him to lead but he just eased back too. I wasn’t sure if he was tired or just super confident that he could get past me at the finish. “1000m to go, 500m to go and he was still there. I thought: is he going to sprint off and leave me or will we be neck and neck right down to the line? [Then,] with only a couple of hundred metres to go I sensed that he had lost that little bit of contact. As soon as I sensed that I really picked up and put everything I had into it. Even as I crossed the finish line I didn’t know where he was.” Lopes was two seconds behind de Castella in a new European record, and Salazar a minute and a half behind in fifth place.
With 200m to go in the Rotterdam Marathon De Castella sensed he could escape Lopes’s shadow.
best they could. Graham led the field out with Salazar running alongside him but the pace was a little bit faster than planned. “The traffic and the crowd control wasn’t really very good,” said de Castella – and lack of crowd control barriers was a feature of most marathons at this time. “It was very difficult to maintain your concentration when there was so much happening around you. You had to block out every other thing on your mind and concentrate on what you were doing. I can’t remember at any stage being flustered although once or twice they really interfered and we had to physically charge our way through.”
four miles to go I thought that I’d be able to stay up there but then he really picked it up; he started sprinting up a hill. I was waiting for him to slow down but he didn’t. They started to pull away. In the last two or three years nobody had pulled away from me during a race; I knew I was in trouble.”
At 10km (30.21) the leaders were a few seconds inside the target time – what was unofficially being called the “New York World Record” of 2:08:13. At halfway Graham pulled out. “I knew that if somebody didn’t start to press very soon then we wouldn’t have a chance to get the record.” said Salazar. “Rob started pressing the pace with about 5 miles (8km) to go. With probably a little less than

“They” were de Castella and Carlos Lopes. Lopes was an accomplished cross country and track runner who had dropped out of his debut Marathon five months previously after colliding with a wayward spectator. He had won the World Cross Country Championships back in 1976 but

Four months later, in August 1983, De Castella went on to win the marathon in the first-ever World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki in 2:10:03. Salazar, who had been undefeated in the marathon until he ran in Rotterdam, repeated his fifth position at the end of the year in the Fukuoka Marathon (2:09:21) and finished as runner-up in the US Trials for the Los Angeles Olympic Marathon (2:11:44). Lopes ran the 10000m at the Helsinki World Championships but after leading until 200m to go was again outkicked and finished sixth. This result seemed to convince him that he would be better off contesting the Marathon in the Los Angeles Olympic Games the following year, although not long before the Games he paced his compatriot Fernando Mamede to a new 10000m world record of in 27:13.81 with Lopes recording 27:17.48, also inside the previous record. The three met again in the Olympic Marathon at Los Angeles along with another favourite, Japan’s Toshihiko Seko. Lopes was 10 years older than many of his rivals but, in warm conditions, ground down the opposition and after 35km surged ahead to win by a margin of 200m in an Olympic Record, which lasted until 2008, of 2:09:21. De Castella rallied to finish fifth in 2:11.09 while Salazar faded to 15th in 2:14:19. Lopes was not finished yet. On 20 April 1985, at the age of 38, he returned to Rotterdam and won the 5th edition of the race in a new world record of 2:07:12. ■ www.nnmarathonrotterdam.org Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3

Opinion Pandemic perspectives
Don’t Given what road race organisers have faced over the past year and a half optimism is a rare commodity – but in many countries there is gathering momentum towards getting races back on the road. Favourable signs are appearing: dropping infection rates; rising vaccination levels; knowledge of which preventative measures are most effective; and evidence indicating vanishingly low transmission rates at open air events. But what races are being held at the moment, or likely to be held in the near future? There has been a drip-feed of competitions for elite runners over the last year for them to test their form and to post qualifying times for the Olympic Marathon. These ‘Covid resistant’ races were much easier to accommodate with small fields running on a short lap often at a privately-owned venue where it is relatively easy to restrict entry to spectators. Big races have been held in some countries, but have come and gone with each wave of the virus. The Nagoya Marathon was run with 5000 runners before a new state of emergency was called. Turkey also held socially-distanced races of up to 4000 runners both in autumn and in spring but coronavirus is still crippling events there. In the US swift action in mounting a vaccination programme has rescued New York from the consequences of infection seen a year ago such that although infections remained high well into the vaccination campaign there
Midnight Sun Marathon, Norway Nils Heatta We are planning a limited edition of MSM on 19 June with a maximum of 2200 runners across 10km, half and marathon races. They will be mostly from Norway as traveling here from other countries is difficult: everyone arriving in Norway must quarantine for 10 days. The possibility of cancellation makes it very difficult to plan and to give good information to runners in advance. Runners have to
us now were vastly fewer hospitalisations and deaths. New York Road Runners Club edged up numbers in their races to a few thousand and then announced that The New York City Marathon – held in 2019 with 54,000 runners – will return in November at 60% capacity with 33,000 runners. Registrations opened on 8 June. The announcement came from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and was astonishingly bold compared to the stance of European authorities. The organisers of the Hans Christian Andersen Marathon in Denmark asked the basic question: As an event organiser how do you prepare when you have no idea of what restrictions you will have to fulfil to satisfy the Government, local authorities – and most importantly the participants?” It’s quite likely that runners so long denied the pleasure of participating in running events will be grateful for whatever organisers can offer them. But mass races still seem a long way off despite the improvement in indicators. Is there a way forward, out of the tight restrictions on the size of the field? This itself is a crude measure when starts are staggered throughout the day, location or self-containment of venue is carefully considered and distancing measures put in place.
“Despite legal permission to return and support from Government, Public Health England and Sport England, a combination of obstacles including misunderstanding the Government’s Roadmap, reluctance, hesitation and unnecessary red tape threatens to delay the return of parkrun indefinitely. “With all other sports returning, alongside the reopening of indoor dining and hospitality, further roadblocks to parkrun’s return feel unreasonable, with non-response, red tape and internal administrative processes standing in the way of the inclusive, community physical activity.” Up to 300,000 people take part in the runs across England on every Saturday morning but Parkrun has to ensure no single event becomes overcrowded after a 14-month break during the pandemic. In May Parkrun claimed that: Hundreds of private and local council landowners were reluctant to hold the events over confusion about the Covid-19 restrictions. Parkrun has been legally permitted since the end of March. So what do races need to do to get back on the roads? They need to get permission from public authorities – but it is not at all clear how they can do that even when the general indicators are favourable.
In the UK there are nearly 600 ‘Parkruns’ held every week – but not since the coronavirus first hit. The organisers complained that:
plan their travel and accommodation, and we have to advise them to book with an option to cancel. We have to observe both national and local restrictions. Right now we can have 200 runners in one group and then, in what is considered another event, start 200 more. Each 200-strong group is divided into 25 runners per start with one minute in between. The groups are seeded according to expected time. All this makes a lot of extra work. We have to make an infection control plan based on national recommendations and the local authorities must approve it. We usually have many foreign runners entered and the authorities were afraid that the race might spread Covid-19, but the way we organised the Polar Night Marathon in January made them more relaxed. We used a study from Japan to show that there is a very low risk to spreading Covid through running events. As we can only have 200 in each event and can only start the next when all these are finished, it will take more than 11 hours for all
2200 runners to finish – that is maximum that we have time for on the race day. Runners will pick up the bib numbers at the same time. We are only allowed to have 20 people indoors at one time. This makes it impossible to have any shop, prize ceremony, changing facilities or showers in indoor spaces. Service for runners will be limited.

Opinion Pandemic perspectives Nagoya Women’s Marathon and Gifu Half Marathon, Japan Nagoya Women’s Marathon was held with a reduced field, but still 5000-strong, on 14 March; Gifu Half Marathon was scheduled for 25 April but cancelled with nine days’ notice. The Covid pandemic and infection status in Japan has changed dramatically with the arrival of new variants of the virus. We are again under the state of emergency although the number of new infection cases remains high. In the month between Nagoya and Gifu the whole situation
Ladakh Marathon, India Chewang Motup The 9th edition of Ladakh Marathon is scheduled for 8–12 September. The event comprises of six races including the Marathon and two Ultra races. “Last year we cancelled the race well ahead of time by the end of May. This year we have postponed registration dates from 15 March to 31 May. Looking at the current situation in India, it is most likely that we will have to cancel most of the races and we have to make a decision by end of June.
changed. There have been no major road races held either before or after Nagoya this year. Our next race dates are in March 2022 (Nagoya) and April 2022 (Gifu). Government is cautious about giving permission to hold large, well-known events after the devastating situation caused by the pandemic. Although in Japan local governments are often part of the organising team of major races and communication goes smoothly it is not the case for some other races. Neither national nor local government has the legal power to make decisions on whether or not to hold events, but race organisers take the government’s declarations and recommendations seriously in making decisions. Go/ no-go decisions on mass events largely depend on the state of infections and the level of strain on hospitals. The chances of last-minute cancellation are never going to go away completely.
We will have to abide by national guidelines and restrictions in place. Any decision will be made in consultation with the local government bodies as the smooth running of the event depends on their support. We also have to consider the decisions of the village authorities as the two ultra races include overnight stays in villages. The village bodies support the races by providing manpower at the various aid stations so we have to heed to their decisions. Permission is based on infection rates not only in Ladakh but nationally as participants come from all over the country. We just do not know what proportion of people will have been vaccinated by our race date. We make detailed proposals for the local authorities to review and approve and we also look at their requirements. They issue permissions in general for Covid protection at public gatherings and mass events.
Berlin Marathon, Germany Mark Milde “We moved back our Generali Berlin Half Marathon from April to 22 August. Our BMW Berlin-Marathon will stay at the original date of 26 September. The decision to allow events used to be from local governments but Germany has now introduced a nationwide restriction if certain
numbers are reached. If the numbers are low, it is a regional decision based on the infection rate. It has become harder to reach decisionmakers but we have been proposing arrangements and then they give feedback. They don’t see races as ‘spreader’ events; they just don’t want to have a problem if something goes wrong. It is a numbers game. At the moment no one really
Races develop their own manuals and protocols with input from infectious disease experts. Some sports associations – including the athletics federation - provide guidelines and we use them as a reference. In Japan spectator sports like baseball and soccer are being held at a reduced capacity, but there have not been any clusters or spread of the infection and they have never been identified as a source of infection either. Restrictions imposed by authorities in Japan are not specific to each activity/sport, but rather general, so they do not treat road races any different from other activities. National and local governments put a limit on the number of total participants of all events in general and races are held according to these figures.
Any races with participation of more than 100 people will be viewed as spreaders of Covid. Also, since Ladakh Marathon is a high altitude running event most runners have to arrive in Leh at least five days in advance to acclimatise. During this period they travel in and around Leh, accompanied by families or friends. This boosts local tourism but during the pandemic could be viewed by the authorities as a potential spreader to remote tourist areas of Ladakh. If races are held they are likely to be lumped together with other activities that are more likely to spread infection. There are currently no guidelines or rules in place to distinguish races held outdoors from other mass events/ festivals.
wants to be the biggest anymore. Smaller races probably have better chances to get a permit. It is all about the size of the event and not so much about precautions you have in place or detailed social distancing measures. We limited numbers ourselves in our proposal. There could be a possibility of raising this figure. For detailed plans presented by Berlin Marathon see page 11 Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3

Opinion Pandemic perspectives Great Ethiopian Run
2021
The 21st edition of the race is set for Sunday 14 November 2021
GREAT Ethiopian
Run
General Manager Dagmawit Amare relates the Covid story in full: Over the past 20 years Great Ethiopian Run has become the pride of the country and has come to be considered as one of the best events organised in Ethiopia. Cancelling the 20th edition was never a serious option. We managed to find a date when we could make it happen safely. Successfully staging the race two months later in mid-January came from showing we could deliver a safe event observing a series of public health protocols. It had the effect of taking our own organising standards to a higher level. Because of this and our deep commitment to promote running and Ethiopia through running, we have great support from the Government and are less fearful of last-minute cancellations. Our decision to stage the race in January 2021 with reduced participant numbers was taken after speaking with the Ministry of Health and followed a directive given by the Ministry about big sporting events. We tried to limit assembly times; we used three wave starts; we had a separate start and finish; and we used temperature checks and social distancing for lining up participants at the start. All participants received a face mask at registration. We also led a strong publicity campaign in the days before the run about following public health protocols. Based on infection rates the Government enforced directives again in March 2021 regarding gatherings for sporting events or religious and other reasons. The authorities consider these directives alongside the benefits that the event brings to the country and to the community in giving us permission to stage races and other events.
V I R T U A L
We had a series of conversations with the Public Health Bureau and the Ministry of Tourism to address various issues regarding the benefits and concerns of staging events. Those conversations reminded us about both the importance of the event to the country and about following safety measures for the event. The final decision was taken after our submissions were presented to the Mayor’s office. We had to fill the Covid matrix table guided by WHO where our scores determined whether or not our event could be conducted safely. Accordingly we had to take further precautionary measures to reduce public health risks. That helped us learn more about additional measures regarding restrictions - which can be applied to our event this year as well. Very few international runners came to Ethiopia for the race because of restrictions on international travel and our own country’s Covid-19 regulations. Few big races are staged in Ethiopia. The other mass events happen around religious and social gatherings. Safety controls are thought to be relatively manageable at races compared to religious gatherings. We feel responsible when organising our races
Gold Coast Marathon, Australia 3–4 July This year’s race was set to be held against a background of very low coronavirus cases and a low percentage of the population vaccinated, No international visitors admitted except those from New Zealand The Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Marathon will be the largest mass-participation event in Australia since Covid-19 hit. With international borders remaining closed runners are coming from every state and territory in the country and keen competition among the national elite was expected for qualifying opportunities for the World Championships 2022 and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games CEO Cameron Hart was anticipating between 16–20,000 runners as a return to mass participation events: “We have had to make some 40
Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3
changes to accommodate the implementation of a Covid-safe plan.” While spectator sports now host almost full stadiums, mass participation events have been slower to return to their former size fields. “Other smaller events have adapted to the ‘new normal’ of event delivery with tight health regulations, social distancing and other responsible management measures” said Hart. “We have developed extensive plans to balance all the health regulations while still providing a world class running experience through crowd management initiatives, We have moved the ASICS Half Marathon from the Sunday to the Saturday to spread our crowd more evenly and we’ve cancelled the usual pre-race check-in centre and expo in favour of mailing out race kits. We have also implemented wave race starts, and we’ll be providing personal protection equipment to the runners. “Our priority this year is to rebuild a solid foundation to grow the event beyond pre-Covid levels in the future.”
R U N
because we want to reflect the positives of our country as well as promote our own brand. We have invested a lot in this area of our work, as well as in keeping our race safe. Great Ethiopian Run was one of the first companies worldwide to return to mass-participation events but we felt that we could ensure a high degree of social distancing. Because of these reasons, and the nature of our event, I feel we are treated differently. Football matches are currently being held without spectators. One of the directives of the Ministry of Health specified a maximum of 25% normal capacity to ensure social distancing so we limited our registrations to 12,000 compared to the 45,000 who registered for the race in 2019. After staging the 20th edition we feel we can increase participant numbers in Meskel Square where the race has started for the past 20 years. Using wave starts we feel confident of doubling participation numbers in November from the 10,000 who took part in January 2021. Particularly in the early months of lockdown we missed social contact and working together as an office team. We started organising virtual races in May 2020 to keep the community active and in good health. The pandemic has helped us as race organisers to think differently about how we organise races, using technology and thinking more about safety even beyond the pandemic. We have witnessed a growth in people taking up running and we have started to organise smaller races directed at novice runners. I am one of those new runners, having just taken up the sport two years ago.
Opinion Pandemic perspectives Valencia Trinidad Alfonso EDP Marathon and Half Marathon, Spain Paco Borao Half Marathon scheduled for 24 October, Marathon for 5 December We are not really worried about the possibility of cancellation unless there is a totally unexpected new disaster. We have to get a permit from the local administration which depends on general conditions prevailing. The indications are favourable, particularly in the Valencia Region of Spain.
A dialogue has always been in place with the highest cooperation between the responsible bodies. Since 2011 the Local Administration and the Correcaminos Club have had an agreement to co-organise the Marathon. They set general rules, then in conjunction we set our own specific rules to be applied in each area of the organisation. The authorities are sympathetic. They are aware of the studies that have shown little risk of infection spreading through running events. We are working together and continuously exchanging data to support our decisions. Within our regional and local areas we have very specific mutual understanding about running events. A generalised political response only comes in some areas where politicians want to take the easy way out with their mantra: “the same rules apply to all of us”. We started with a cap of 1000 in starts of 500 but as of today we have 3000 planned in groups of 1000. This is about to go up to
Maraton de Santiago, Chile Fernando Jamarne Lockdowns and curfews make naming a date for the next Marathon impossible There are several factors that prevent us from going back to normal and organising mass events. Each country is facing different challenges in the fight against the Covid 19 virus, some are more prepared than others. Some countries have better medical facilities, including Intensive Treatment Units, trained personnel and physicians. The financial strength of a country has also been an important factor in this battle for the acquisition of mechanical ventilators, vaccines and putting together
5000 and will continue to increase as the Covid numbers get better. The problems for mass race organisers come more from managing public attendance rather than from the participation of runners themselves, where few problems arise.
financial assistance packages to help their people when imposing restrictive measures. Other countries are suffering the terrible effects of the pandemic, especially India, Brazil and countries in Africa. Here in Chile we have our borders closed, lockdowns in different regions of the country, curfews, and other restrictive measures which make it impossible to organise any event, nor even a wedding or birthday party with more than 5-10 people. Current conditions make it inadvisable to organise mass events, even though the end of September is the target date for the population to be fully vaccinated against the virus. Health authorities are not yet prepared to receive applications from race organisers or from any producers of mass events. In Chile no one can anticipate the sanitary situation a few months from now. The organisation of mass races this year would bear too many
risks considering the number of people that are being infected day by day and the variants of the virus that are emerging. Our sponsors also want to have a safe and secure race but we have not yet reached this stage. So far no mass event has been authorised and the organisation of the Maraton de Santiago requires no less than six months of planning. The authorities are concentrated on having general sanitary measures in place and tackling political issues considering that this is an election year. Assessing potential risks posed by races and other outdoor activities falls below the political radar, never mind the details of how to manage races to minimise the already low risk of infection.

Opinion Pandemic perspectives Marine Corps Marathon, USA Rick Nealis The Orders of Public Health Emergency mandates on the Federal, State and County levels must be addressed and adhered to. Before any marathon or running event can move forward in securing a permit to host an event a lot more scrutiny and questions about safety planning are being asked and have to be addressed. The wind is blowing in a favourable direction though and I am confident on that on 31 October the 46th Marine Corps Marathon will be held. Plans are now being reinforced as the “LIVE” decision has been made for the 46th Marine Corps Marathon (The People’s Marathon), the Marine Corps Marathon 50K (The largest urban ultra marathon in the United States), and the MCM10K will be executed. The 2021 Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Weekend will be held live and in-person on 29-31 October in Arlington, Virginia and the nation’s capital. Throughout my many years heading the MCM Organisation we have followed the mantra to “adapt and overcome”. This year will be no different. The MCM’s mission is to highlight the high standards and organisational excellence of the United States Marine Corps as
Despite not holding a physical marathon in over a year, we have “tailored” in hosting smaller events with similar operational layouts. It will be two years since we had over 20,000 runners come across the finish line. we plan to safely gather and celebrate the 46th MCM in person. To prioritise the health and safety of our running community, the MCMO is taking preventative measures and implementing certain safety guidelines in accordance with local jurisdictions. These include reducing the size of the field and dividing runners into scaled, social-distanced start times beginning at 07.00. The MCMO will continue to review event operations and protocols in conjunction with Marine Corps leadership, local government and public health officials.
Despite the allure of running in the event I do see some trepidation from runners about coming back. I think this is going to be a clear signal that we’re going to come out of this, and it’s through running that we will do so. The mental fatigue that we’ve all experienced of being cooped up for close to 18 months will quickly dissolve as runners take our sport back to the streets and starting lines and remember the magical camaraderie and euphoria that running provides. We are the proud runners of the world.

comes to Europe Official footwear of increasing number of events It has been a year now since HEALTH IBERIA launched its foray into Europe. Chief Executive Jose Manuel Albentosa comments: “We are tremendously happy not only to belong to the Health family, located in beautiful Hangzhou Bay (100km east of Hangzhou itself), but also to belong to the AIMS family as ‘the home of world running’. We consider it a great bond for both parties.”
Jose Manuel Albentosa CEO (on right) with partner and General Manager of HEALTH IBERIA, S.L. Jorge Díaz
We started to launch the HEALTH brand in Europe within the Spanish and Portuguese markets from our headquarters in Alicante and we are planning to expand into the rest of Europe from the beginning of 2022. HEALTH has a wide range of attractive features which will equip it to become a very important brand within the running world. One of its distinguishing characteristics is the high level of technology developed in every running style. This allows runners to rest assured in the knowledge that HEALTH will be taking care of the tiniest details to adapt them to running the distances most appropriate to their training sessions. HEALTH offers its runners more than 12 technologies.
The COVID pandemic has been a very difficult experience for all of us. However, because of this unique challenge, we have become stronger and more determined to make this marvellous project come to life. From the start the promotional message we used to all runners in Europe
was to urge them to RUN FOR HEALTH. It was not a new message but, since the onset of the covid pandemic, it has become infused with new meaning. Running has been highlighted as a means of resisting both the physical and mental impacts of the pandemic even when there have been few chances to practice it as a competitive sport. On the other hand, looking forward to when mass races again become possible, we are proud to let you know about the agreements we have reached with many important races with the aim of HEALTH becoming the official footwear of an increasing number of events. In addition to the above-mentioned events HEALTH has become the official footwear of a very significant race series called PONLE FRENO where a huge TV ad campaign is supporting our brand. It is a very important alliance for HEALTH in gaining more brand awareness. HEALTH has settled down within the runners’ world with the solid intention of remaining in this position for a long time to come. It is because among other things we are runners, and we feel and share the same passion that millions of runners feel when they put on a pair of shoes to help them eat up the kilometres. We would like record our thanks both to HEALTH worldwide headquarters in China and to the AIMS family for placing their trust in HEALTH IBERIA. RUN FOR HEALTH. ■ https://www.healthsports.eu/ Distance Running | 2021 Edition 3

Marathon Photos go live Marathon and 950 in the 10km – along with smaller supporting events. Previously a runner’s progress throughout the course of a race might be tracked by friends and family but this was restricted to at best following an icon on a course map. The new technical capability of LIVE! means that friends and family can chart their runner’s progress in pictures taken live throughout the race, right up to the moment they cross the finish line. There have been more LIVE events since as the technology is constantly refined This wasn’t the first attempt to push the limits of what could be delivered in the field of live photography.
New software developments deliver personal photos within seconds As race after race was forced to cancel during 2020 it seemed as if distance running as a sport was dying. It became individualised both in training and competition, as events dried up or became ‘virtual’. The celebratory nature of the sport became lost in a socially-distanced wilderness.
flying. Covid-19 gave us a unique opportunity to focus on some major projects and get them finished.”
But some used the break from the normal calendar of organised events to good effect. Race organisers planned ways in which some kind of live event could be made safe for the new conditions, and many race providers re-thought what services they could bring to an event.
The Christchurch Marathon held in New Zealand on 11 April trialled the service. New Zealand’s long Covid-free status, along with it being where Marathon-Photos had originated, made it a convenient testing ground. The event had 630 marathon runners entered, 1500 in the Half
New technology developed in ‘the year that marathons vanished’ allowed images to be uploaded, identified and placed online within seconds of being taken.
“We first photographed live in 2015 at the Oxford Half Marathon in England,” says Kay. “Runners had finish photos posted to their mobile phones before they’d left the finish chute. It was a successful project but it required bulky infrastructure and satellite dishes, so it wasn’t a very expandable option.” Programming and technology developments since then have allowed the company to produce portable devices that can be issued to photographers on the course and at the finish of any event. “We’ve been photographing events since 1999 and we know that these days people want their photos instantly. That is what we are doing here and now – it’s real-time live,” says Kay. The company has also launched its new website MarathonPhotos.live, in commitment to the live ideology. Live service will be rolled out worldwide as major events start to ramp up again this year. ■ marathonphotos.live
Marathon-Photos came up with a new idea of what ‘live’ could mean in race photography. They developed a new concept of what they could offer to race participants. The effects of Covid-19 on endurance events allowed the company to focus on development of the hardware and software used in production of the live system. Marathon-Photos founder and managing director Francis Kay explains: “Programming during normal times is like fixing a plane while it’s

Medal-worthy Medal producer looks at sport through the eyes of those who participate The last 18 months have undoubtably been the most difficult and uncertain time in the living memory of event organisers, suppliers and runners alike. As medal suppliers Medaltime are fully aware of the situation and sympathise with everyone having to suffer the unavoidable consequences of the pandemic. We considered how we could best become a reliable and supportive partner for organisers in such uncertain times while still maintaining high levels of service and attention to product development. The ‘Virtual race’ was born and Medaltime has been a forerunner in supporting events with custom-made medals. We developed a “virtual race” concept whereby organisers who were unable to stage their event due to Covid restrictions could offer participants the opportunity to register on line for the race but run or walk the equivalent distance from either their home or an alternative accessible venue and on a suitable route. Virtual runs often require personal seconding and support. Arrival at the finish line demands mental discipline and is worthy of the reward of a bespoke medal and finisher certificate. This was taken up by many event organisers who were forced to postpone their live event. With our offices and factory located in the Netherlands, big events such as the Dam Tot Damloop and Breda Singelloop were prime examples. The company developed a live tracking app and a special medal posting service. The app incorporated innovative features fitting to our customers’ requirements such as ‘live tracking with the option that runners are displayed on the official ‘live’ race course and custom-printed

and shaped medal envelopes, posted out to runners around the globe. Flexible solutions were developed whereby ribbons with the incorrect year or date could be easily removed and replaced. This avoided scrapping costly medals which had already been paid for. We were continuously monitoring combinations of sea and airfreight transportation routes to facilitate economical delivery due to the disruption caused by Covid. In some cases we extended this by offering free storage of medals at our warehouse in the Netherlands.
The highly prestigious 2020 Athens Marathon The Authentic was postponed for a year and the medals are still in free storage at our warehouse pending delivery. Although such actions have increased our own costs we have tried to adopt a policy of assisting our customers to get through the pandemic as we look to better times ahead. Recovering of the high infrastructure costs associated with large events relies on high participation to pay the bills and satisfy sponsors. Similarly, the survival of Medaltime can only be based on the re-establishment of mass participation races. In the majority of AIMS events around the world their success, and the success of road running in general has been mainly attributable to the passion of the dedicated few who eat, drink, sleep and dream our sport.
Medaltime is managed by athletes who understand what it takes to stage events and prides itself in joining organisations with the desire to beat the challenges of the pandemic. We know how frustrating it is for athletes who have been unable to compete in events or where even simple training regimes have become disrupted. We have all had to realign our goals and seek new or different motivation until we can together rewrite a new chapter of success. Meanwhile, light is finally shining on the horizon with the advent of COVID-19 vaccination programmes. With the confidence this inspires we see various initiatives emerging. Medaltime supported RunCzech’s ‘Runway Run’ staged at Prague Airport Due to COVID-19, the NN Mission Marathon also took place on an airport runway – at Twente Airport where 70 athletes tried to secure qualification for the Tokyo Olympic Games. These were limited participation events but they offered the opportunity for the company to reach out and assist like-minded organisers who have had to think outside the box until mass participation events can return. We realise that our presence in the market has to be innovative and flexible but we understand the ever-prevailing uncertainty that exists. Whilst trying to assist race organisers, Medaltime will always look at our sport through the eyes of those who participate whether ‘elite’ or ‘back of the pack’ runners around the world. We all need to pull together. We all want to get back onto the road. So Medaltime would like to invite any athlete who may have a novel idea to promote our sport to come forward with any suggestions which we will gladly take up in the interests of our worldwide running community. ■ medaltime.com
