Rick Nealis bows out Rick Nealis has served as the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) race director since 1993. Under his leadership MCM established itself as one of the best-organised marathons in the world. The 2021 race will be his last as race director.
2002 and our nation at war for the last 20 years have made ‘Love of Country’ and ‘Corps’ a central theme for our runners. With a starting line adjacent to Arlington Cemetery, our runners and Marines remember the sacrifices our nation’s military make every day. On 31 October 2021 we will remember those 13 service members who were killed by a terrorist attack on 26 August in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Nealis served in the United States Marine Corps from 1975 through to 1995. A runner himself, his marathon best is 3:09:50 from the 1983 Marine Corps Marathon. In 1996 he served as the Olympic Torch Deputy Caravan Coordinator for the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta and five years later was a member of the security team for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. On the 30th Anniversary of the MCM in 2005 the Military Officers Association of America presented an Ovation (in their Today’s Officer magazine) to Nealis for his accomplishments in promoting the organizational skills of the United States Marines. His induction into the Hall of Champions for Running USA in 2009 was followed a year later by Road Race Management naming him as their Race Director of the Year. Rick Nealis with Boston and NYC marathon multiple winner Bill Rodgers
During his time as race director Nealis developed the Marine Corps Marathon from a 26.2 mile race to a weekend long event packed with activities for runners and fitness enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. The MCM now boasts an economic impact of nearly $40 million and serves as a platform for charity partners to raise more than $10 million for local and national causes. Nealis recalls: Over 500,000 runners have crossed the Marine Corps Marathon finish line during my 29 years of service. Runners such as Oprah Winfrey, Vice President Al Gore, Comedian Drew Carey and even my wife JoAnn Webb, are among those who can proudly proclaim they are “The Few, The Proud, The Finishers.” Every runner is special to the Marines at “The People’s Marathon.” The Marines know what it means to have a vision, to construct a plan and to execute with precision and success Terrorist attacks at the Pentagon in 2001, random sniper killings in
During these past years I had mentors who could provide guidance and this created lasting partnerships. Olympic gold medal winner Bill Mills showed me how charity partners could embrace our event. Over the years the involvement of law enforcement and first responders in the MCM planning process has become paramount. Ensuring a safe and secure venue is priority #1.

It was through the MCM that in October 2001 the Marine Corps led our nation back to normalcy. By hosting the 26th Marine Corps Marathon so closely after 9/11, MCM runners made a statement in reclaiming our sport. As they ran past the point of attack at the Pentagon and through the streets of our national capital runners showed their resilience to the world. In this, my final year as Race Director, we battle another enemy: Covid attacks our freedom to run in mass participation events. I am confident that, with safety protocols, the Marine Corps Marathon organization will once again lead our nation back to normalcy. On 31 October I look forward to greeting even more MCM marathon participants on the finish line.

AIMS news
Distance marker from the original 42195m acquired by AIMS In an episode of the BBC series Antiques Roadshow, aired from Enfield in London back in March, a 113-year old cast iron fingerpost sign was brought for valuation. It was the “18 miles” sign from the 1908 London Olympic Marathon run from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium in west London. The sign had been spotted at a “car boot sale” in the north-west of England by Graham Webster, a running enthusiast and collector of Olympic memorabilia. It had not even been fully on view as Webster had to get the stallholder to retrieve it from goods piled on the ground. During the broadcast programme Webster expressed the feeling that the sign belonged in a museum. Subsequently AIMS approached
him to see if he would be willing to sell and the sign was acquired for the AIMS Museum in Berlin where it will go on display. The sign was in fact placed 8.2 miles into the course, at 18 miles to go and bears the ‘5-diamond’ emblem of Polytechnic Harriers, the club given the task of organising the race. Such signs were used for the entire length of the course but the only one previously known to be still in existence was the “25 miles” [to go] sign at Eton Bridge. Contemporaneous pictures show some of the signs fixed to tall wooden poles. The 18 miles sign was one of these and the pole was attached to a bridge over the River Colne at the location. This bridge was replaced during World War II. What makes the length of this particular race, signposted in both
miles and ‘kilos’, so important was that it eventually became fixed as the Marathon standard of 26 miles 385 yards or 42.195 kilometres. Before then marathons had usually been approximately 25 miles (40km) but could vary considerably in length. Why this race became so significant was due to the dramatic finale which played out on the track inside the stadium. The Italian Dorando Pietri, who had led the race from 24 miles, collapsed repeatedly and was ‘assisted’ to his feet by race referee Jack Andrew before a last dash to the finish line. He got there 32 seconds before the American, Johnny Hayes, but
the Americans protested and Hayes was awarded the victory. Public sympathy was with Pietro and Queen Alexandra, who had witnessed Pietri’s desperate last-lap struggle, awarded him a special commemorative cup. The race stoked a marathon frenzy and ‘re-runs’ attracted huge betting interest. Pietri and Hayes met up in many different locations in the following years, both indoors and outside, where the only constant was the distance they had to run. In 1924 the world governing body, the IAAF, formalised the Marathon distance as that run from Windsor to White City in the 1908 Olympic Marathon..
Mitsugi Ogata appointed President of JAAF At the Japan Association of Athletics Federations 68th Board of Directors meeting, held online on 21 June Director Mitsugi Ogata was elected as President. He was a member of the Board of Directors of AIMS from 2014–2018, taking special responsibility for Asia. AIMS President Paco Borao wrote a letter passing on the Association’s congratulations.

Please diary this important Congress – programme details to be published shortly 23rd World congress Osaka, Japan 23–25 February 2023
Mr Ogata served as Managing Director of the Japanese Federation from June 2011 to June 2021 and during that time had been in charge of practical matters, maintaining close contact with all Japanese AIMS member races. As the eighth president of the Federation, he said, “I will be in a strong position to lead the Japanese track and field world [but] first of all, a steady rebuilding.” Mitsugi Ogata is a former decathlete (Japanese champion in 1981 & 1982). He was Japan’s Head Coach at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin and Team Leader at those held in Moscow in 2013. He chairs the Japanese Olympic Committee’s High Performance Committee. At a press conference held after the board of directors meeting
President Ogata said: “Due to new coronavirus infections we first have to make a steady recovery. We need to review our business. We want to see the pinch as a time when we can change things and make it into an opportunity.” He added: “I want to support the success of athletes and foster a longing for top athletes and sports, which will lead to the spread of wellness athletics.”

AIMS news As Distance Running deadlines loomed mass races were coming out of hibernation.
The starting gates open…
In many European countries the second weekend in September seemed to be the moment race organisers had been waiting for. Races with mass fields were held in Vienna, Hamburg, Munster, Brighton, Stockholm, Tallinn, Vilnius and Athens, among other places.
Athens marks a passing, and builds towards the big event In Athens the Half Marathon had been postponed from its usual race date in March, first to May and then to September. There were significant anti-covid precautions put in place as what happens as a result of the half marathon determines what can be done for Athens Marathon The Authentic to take place nine weeks later on 14 November. The Athens Half Marathon was dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis who had died on 2 September 2021, aged 96, and lay in state in Athens for three days. Theodorakis was Greece’s most renowned composer best known for the sound track of the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. He was a resistance fighter during World War II, a leading opponent of the Greek “Colonels” regime from 1967–74, and was elected as a Member of Parliament several times. The race offered a way of expressing public feeling, as many have done in different situations of adversity or loss, or of celebration. The Covid precautions enforced as part of the race hygiene plan agreed between the organisers and the public authorities, particularly the processional starting procedures, lent themselves to generating an atmosphere of solidarity and tribute. From 06.30–07.00 runners arrived from all Metro stations surrounding the start area, in front of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square, following specific instructions aimed at making use of all the stations in the approach to the starting area, with additional walking distance, to prevent overcrowding. Runners were allocated to starting blocks while keeping the social distancing rule of 1.5–2m. The starting blocks were set up on a 100m-long, 12m-wide section of Amalia Avenue. This allowed each block to observe the runners’ “safe positioning” plan while they waited for the start and set off in rows of 5–6 – about 50 participants at a time. The race was started by the President of SEGAS Sofia Sakorafa and Mikis Theodorakis’ grandson, Angelos Papagelidis-Theodoraki. From now on the Athens Half Marathon will be dedicated to the memory of the great Greek composer. It all passed off smoothly and gives a platform on which to build with confidence towards Athens Marathon The Authentic on 14 November without fear of a late cancellation as happened in 2020.
Vienna quickstep The Vienna City Marathon became the first major marathon held anywhere in the world with a top elite field since the start of the Corona pandemic. There were 26,000 entries from 126 nations for the various events, 6,000 of them in the marathon. But it ended with the runner who crossed the line first being disqualified. Ethiopia’s Derara Hurisa wore shoes which did not comply with the rules. It was the first time that such a disqualification has been made in a major marathon. Kenya’s Leonard Langat became the winner with a time of 2:09:25, while debutante Vibian Chepkirui (Kenya) won the women’s race in 2:24:29. Less than 45 minutes after breaking the finishing tape in 2:09:22 Hurisa looked completely distraught. He had just learnt that he was disqualified because the soles of his shoes were one centimetre thicker than allowed. The soles of road running shoes have to be no thicker than 4cm but Hurisa’s had a sole thickness of 5cm. He is said to have chosen the shoes for the race because he had used them in training and thought they were within the rules.
Derara Hurisa just before the finish line. Photo: VCM/Jenia Symonds
Organisers explained that every runner or their manager had to fill in a form in which they have to name the model of the shoe they were going to wear. On Hurisa’s form a shoe was named that is within the rules but on race day he wore a different pair. “We stressed the rules about the shoes in the technical meeting. We had no other choice than to disqualify the athlete” said Hannes Langer, one of the elite race coordinators of the Vienna City Marathon. “It is the first time something like this has happened. I am sure that from now on there will be [additional] checks to avoid it happening again.”

New members Bucharest International Half Marathon & 10K ROU The women’s Olympic Marathon champion from Beijing 2008, Constantina Dita, is one of Romania’s most successful athletes and is the founder and president of the annual Bucharest International Half Marathon & 10K. Constantina competed eight times at the World Half Marathon Championships (for which she was named Ambassador in 2020 at Gdynia) and earned seven medals in the process, including a double victory (individual and team) in Edmonton in 2005. She is still the national record holder for the marathon and half marathon. Constantina won the 2004 Chicago Marathon and finished second
in 2005. She also made it on to the podium three times at the London Marathon. She still runs and hopes to one day complete the full set of six Marathon Majors by running the Boston and Tokyo Marathons. Built on the inspiration of Constantina Dita, Bucharest International Half Marathon & 10K is the most beautiful road running race in Romania, featuring a very fast course, and showcasing the most important landmarks in the nation’s capital. Aiming to be a world class running event and an IAAF Gold Label race, Bucharest International Half Marathon & 10K also promotes Romania’s touristic beauty.
Great Victory Run 10km EGY The Great Victory Run was founded by Ahmed Elnady, the winner of the ‘Luxor Run’ (22.3km) at the 2012 Egyptian Marathon. He was following his dream to establish an internationally-certified 10km race in Egypt. The venue was chosen as El Sharouk (“The Sunrise”), a new settlement to the north-east of Cairo itself, established as part of the overall plan for the future development of Greater Cairo. It is a city of modern buildings and broad tree-lined boulevards which Elnady saw lent themselves well to use for staging road races.
Run Half Marathon, planned for December 2021 and the Great Egyptian River Nile Marathon in February 2022. Both may become AIMS members in the near future. “May the spirit of Victory rise from the hearts of true champions in the land of wonders and our great Pharoahs. We welcome you to Egypt – a land of happiness, peace and victory.”
Apart from “Egypt’s Best 10K” Elnady and his team have also had courses certified for other events to be held including the Great Freedom
Kyiv Nova Poshta Half Marathon UKR The Ukrainian capital Kiev lies on the Dnieper River and is among the 10 largest cities in Europe. The city centre has an abundance of historical sights, restaurants cafes and hotels. Maxim Krivenko, director of Newrun the organisation promoting a series of races in Ukraine, says: “Mass marathon running in Ukraine began to develop from 2015 and now it is a trend throughout the country. The Kyiv Nova Poshta Half Marathon joins four other AIMS member races in the Newrun calendar of 13 events in the larger cities spread throughout Ukraine.
Compliance with quality and safety standards is a priority for us - but we strive for more. In Kiev we want our race to be an example of the development of running in Ukraine. Kiev is a hilly city but we find a compromise between the ‘colour’ of the route and minimising the ups and downs along the course. The marathon village is in the city centre for the convenience of visiting runners – access by metro makes it easy. We invite you to take part in our launch and support the development of marathon running in Ukraine. We hope that every competitor will be a little happier after receiving the finisher’s medal at our race. Welcome! Distance Running | 2021 Edition 4

Since then the Neujahrsmarathon Zurich has grown progressively and regularly attracts over 1000 runners from more than 50 different countries.
The race starts on the very first second of the year, making the Neujahrsmarathon Zurich the first AIMS running event of the year and hence the performances of the winners automatically qualify as first official world leading times for the year.

With its unique start time, the Neujahrsmarathon Zurich attracts ambitious runners who, once in a lifetime, want to set a world leading time or at least a national leading time. The race is a loop course beside the river Limmat amounting to exactly 10.54875km – which means that four loops equal a marathon. The runners run through the sports hall after each lap to be cheered on by family, friends and spectators. The race is
subject to a time limit of five hours, which may be extended in case of bad conditions such as snow and ice. The Neujahrsmarathon Zurich was born 18 years ago in 2003: five running enthusiasts decided to make the idea of a marathon at the turn of the year a reality. On 1 January 2005 the time

Looking ahead | 12 December 2021 Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon, Vietnam
Friendly and challenging Iconic courses showing the best of Vietnam to the world Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in the world. Steeped in history, it has a lot to offer foodies, shopping lovers, and business people alike. Yet despite all the attractions before 2017 there wasn’t a major marathon to showcase all that Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has to offer. Sunrise Events Vietnam (SEV), founded in 2015, was responsible for bringing the IRONMAN 70.3 race to the country. With the growth of the triathlon SEV noticed an increasing desire among the Vietnamese to focus on healthy activities and friendly yet challenging competition. SEV’s vision was to bring the best of the world to Vietnam, and the best of Vietnam to the world. They did so by featuring world class athletes in their events, and delivering the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship in Danang. In HCMC, the country’s largest metropolis, SEV launched the first Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon in 2017, with three more hugely successful editions since then. The organisers have designed iconic courses running through six city districts. The four courses to choose from: 5km, 10km, 21.1km and the Marathon, attract an enthusiastic range of local and international runners.
On race weekend Saturday features the Kids Runs. On Sunday, starting from 04.00, participants gather in front of the Saigon Zoo & Botanical Gardens in a welcome escape from the sweltering daytime temperatures. Anticipation and excitement are high as competitors embrace the chance to run safely through the city, for a few hours owning those streets normally dominated by millions of motorbikes. Landmarks dotting the course include Independence Palace, Saigon Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Opera House, and the intriguing maze of the city’s Chinatown, with its aroma of turmeric and cumin. The Thu Thiem bridge offers sprawling views of both sides of the Saigon River. The Marathon has grown to be one of HCMC’s annual highlights. It has quickly become the biggest competitive running event in the country, with 13,000 participants over all distances offered Despite the setbacks and restrictions of the global COVID-19 pandemic the 4th Edition of the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon took place successfully and
safely on 11 April 2021. Thanks to the crucial support of the HCMC government, the Department of Tourism, the event’s partners, suppliers and volunteers, and the year-round efforts of SEV’s industrious team, the 4th edition provided a palpable sense of relief and joy to the city’s residents. At the fourth edition of the race SEV’s General Manager Onslo Carrington noted that: “at certain times in the history of an event or a city circumstances can shape both to take on a much larger meaning. Life is a marathon, and sometimes the road is smooth. Other times it is full of holes, with wild dogs chasing you and thousands of motorbikes and cars to dodge. As Vietnam has shown the world if you can keep putting one foot in front of the other then eventually you will have run, walked or crawled towards a greater sense of purpose. One that encapsulates all of us.” The future for competitive running in Vietnam, much like its 3260km of coastline, is bright, beautiful and full of promise. ■ marathonhcmc.com

Looking ahead | 7 November 2021 Zurich Marató de Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona’s best face Enjoy a great personal adventure in ‘one of the most beautiful cities on the planet’ On 7 November Barcelona will once again show its best face to the world with a cosmopolitan marathon whose route passes the most emblematic places in the city.
Barcelona is open, hospitable, inclusive, multicultural and friendly to visitors. Its world-famous cuisine, pleasant year-round climate and wide range of cultural events make it the ideal city to visit and return to time and time again.
After a year of global change and transformation the Zurich Marató Barcelona is born again, stronger than ever, to offer participants a magical experience with Barcelona’s urban landscape as a backdrop. The Marató is special, and that is down to the city that hosts it; a city with an open cosmopolitan spirit. Its Mediterranean character and Modernist past has left a singular, instantly identifiable architecture and a cuisine that is admired the world over.
The Zurich Marató Barcelona is a massivelyattended race with runners from all over the world. Runners come ready for a great personal adventure and to enjoy one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. It’s a weekend to be shared with the family thanks to the large number of parallel events. There is the Expo Sports, a “runners’ fair” where participants collect their race number (bib), T-shirt (in 100% recycled polyester used by Asics, the technical sponsor) and runners’ bag. There is the Kids Race on the day before the Marathon. The festive Breakfast Run follows the last few kilometres of the 1992 Olympic Marathon route and gives participants the unique opportunity of entering the ‘Lluís Companys’ Olympic Stadium. Then there is the Pasta Party, a convivial meal enjoyed by the participants the day before the race.
In recent times the capital of Catalonia has won hearts the world over. Thanks to its many tourist attractions, and the well-ordered “Eixample” quarter (dating from the mid-19th century), the city was able to transform itself and become the focus of world attention when it hosted the 1992 Olympic Games.
The Marató is a blend of sport, leisure and popular festivities: there are 40 entertainment points along the route. The course has been improved to make it faster and of almost 20,000 runners who took part in the last edition many recorded personal best times. Avenida María Cristina, with the Palace of Montjuïc and the Magic Fountain (Fuente Mágica) in all their splendour, is the ideal place to start and finish the race. The route passes the main tourist attractions of the city: the Camp Nou (home to FC Barcelona); the stretch along
Passeig de Gràcia with Casa Batlló looking down on the runners; the imposing Sagrada Familia; the Arc de Triomf. Then there is the monument to Christopher Columbus on the waterfront and the Torres Venecianes as the last architectural highlight on the route. All these will help to keep runners motivated right through to the finish. The spotlight is always on the runners. Theirs is a unique journey that starts the moment they register for the race and ends when they cross the finish line to collect their coveted finisher’s medal. From the biggest to the smallest, from the locally-born to those from the other side of the world, from the tenacious wheelchair competitor to the gutsy winner: every one of you, together with the hundreds of volunteers, entertainment teams, medical services, physios and citizens in general, make the Zurich Marató Barcelona a magical experience. This year, if you run you will have already won. ■ www.zurichmaratobarcelona.es Distance Running | 2021 Edition 4

Marathons of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad
Long after Tokyo won the right to stage the 2020 Olympic Games attention belatedly focused on its suitability as venue for staging endurance events – in particular the Marathons and the Walks. The scenes of distress that had followed the finish of the 2019 World Championships Marathon in Doha, particularly of the women’s race, led to a reconsideration. Tokyo was likely to present equally difficult conditions of heat and humidity as Doha but Sapporo, 800km further north, looked like a more distance runner-friendly location. Meteorological statistics suggested that Sapporo could be six degrees cooler than Tokyo at the beginning of August so the Marathons and walks were separated from the rest of the athletics events and passed over to Sapporo against the protestations of the Governor of Tokyo. In the end conditions in Sapporo, although probably less severe than they would have been in Tokyo, were not as benign as predicted. It was hot (over 30C) and humid for both men’s and women’s races, held on consecutive days. To a large extent this shaped the nature of the competition: big lead groups held together far into the race because of the slow pace at which the first half of each race was run.

Women’s Olympic Marathon, 7 August 2021 Peres Jepchirchir won the Women’s Olympic Marathon for Kenya in hot and humid conditions as temperatures rose above 30C in the final stages of the race. She beat her compatriot, race favourite and world record holder Brigid Kosgei, by pushing on ahead of her rival just after 40km and opening up a gap which grew to 80m by the finish line. unheralded American running only her third Marathon, came in third a further 50m behind. The day before the women’s race officials saw that temperatures after 09.00 were projected to rise to over 31C. With remarkable speed a decision was made to pull back the start time from 07.00 to 06.00 and communicated to the runners before they slept.
continued sedately, with 5km splits of 17:31 and 17:40, to reach halfway in 1:15:14. Up to this point the pace had been set by the race favourites which, as well as World Half Marathon Champion Jepchirchir and Kosgei, included world record holder for the half marathon Ruth Chepngetich and Lonah Salpeter, running for Israel, who had recorded the second-fastest time of 2020 behind Jepchirchir.
88 competitors lined up at the start with the temperature already at 25C - and set to rise to 30C by the finish. It was a cautious start as the race favourites clustered at the front and passed through the first 5km in 18.02. The processional pace was maintained through 10km as a huge group of 47 tightly-packed runners passed through in 36:16 (18:14 5km split). The race
Seidel had remained in the pack and not yet made her presence felt but as she explained in a post-race interview: “We didn’t go out super-fast and I kept it very controlled at the beginning. After halfway, rather than follow, I wanted to make moves and be aggressive.” Despite the slowish pace the lead group had been reduced to 11 with Seidel now prominent among them,

leading through 25km in 1:28:51 (5km split of 17.24). By 30km, reached with a 5km split of 17:13, Jepchirchir had taken up the pace and led eight others - but not including Chepngetich who now trailed by five seconds and was soon to drop out. Seidel continued to push and by 35km, after the fastest 5km split of the race (16:54), only Salpeter and Eunice Chumba, running for Bahrain, were still with the eventual medallists. They tailed off before 40km, and Seidel herself now lagged the Kenyan pair by six seconds, after a 5km split of 17:01. Neither of the two Kenyans looked comfortable in the closing stages and Jepchirchir confirmed after the race that “It was so hot; it was not easy.” Even so, it was she who managed to open up a gap on Kosgei and propel herself to the finish line with the realisation: “wow, I’m going to make it, I’m going to win”. Despite the steadily rising temperatures throughout the race the slow start helped the first eight finishers to record a faster second half, with Jepchirchir’s being almost three minutes faster. Following the leader
Men’s Olympic Marathon, 8 August 2021 Eliud Kipchoge retained the Olympic Marathon title he first won five years ago in Rio de Janeiro and became only the third person to do so, following Abebe Bikila (1960, 1964) and Waldemar Cierpinski (1976, 1980). But he made it look simple, with an injection of pace between 30-40km that left the rest of the field scattered in his wake. Conditions appeared slightly less unfavourable than for the women on the previous morning but the early pace was just as cautious and the eventual retirement rate, at 30 of the 106 starters, was higher. Opening 5km sections were timed at 15:17 and 15:36 as around 50 runners formed a loose-knit pack with no clear leader to dictate the pace. Kipchoge occasionally did a stint at the front but shared the lead with several others who just seemed to want the experience – either of leading an Olympic Marathon or, perhaps, of running alongside Kipchoge. Fist bumps were seen to be exchanged.
Halfway was reached in 1:05:13, after further 5km splits of 15:10 and, from 15-20km, 15:44. Despite this being the slowest 5km section of the race the field had thinned out but still numbered in excess of 20 runners. Kipchoge was content to stay within the group but was winding up the pressure as the 5km splits got faster: 15:37 for 20-25km and 15:07 for 25-30km. The lead group now numbered just 10 and Kipchoge was ready to make his play. He did so at 31km with a sudden change of pace that put distance between himself and everyone else. His teammate Lawrence Cherono led the scramble to keep up which resulted in him heading the group of four that were rapidly losing distance on the leader. Kipchoge forged ahead, now in his own private race to the line. His split from 30-35km was 14:28, which put him 27 seconds ahead of the chasing group comprising Cherono, Ayad Lamdassem from Spain, Bashir Abdi (BEL) and Abdi Nageeye (NED).
This group lost a lot more ground to Kipchoge in the 35-40km segment but this was incidental as their attention was focussed on which two of the four would make it onto the podium. Lamdassem dropped back while Cherono drove for the line but it was Nageeye who proved strongest in the long finishing straight as he cajoled his training partner Abdi to follow him as they kicked past Cherono in the final 100m. But the day belonged to Kipchoge who, 80 seconds clear of Nageeye, won by the widest margin since Frank Shorter’s 1972 victory. Men 1 Eliud KIPCHOGE

Paralympics Marathons 5 September 2021, Japan
Tokyo finally gets its Marathon fix Unlike the Olympic Marathons, which had been hived off to the city of Sapporo 800km to the north in the hope of less hostile weather conditions, the Paralympic Marathons were hosted alongside most other sports – in Tokyo.
Tadashi Horikoshi (JPN) after winning the bronze medal during the men’s Marathon – T12
One month later in the year was deemed sufficient to anticipate that Tokyo’s dependably steamy summer heat would have waned enough to present Paralympic endurance performers with reasonable running conditions. The weather broke the night before the races and wheelchair athletes and runners were greeted with sodden conditions on race morning. Although the wheelchairs must have flicked up spray directly into the racers’ faces it appeared to be the camera crew who were tested more. Runners – and it seemed Japanese runners in particular – mostly thrived in the conditions.

Having missed out on any marathon medals in the Olympics a month before the host nation could hardly have hoped for a better finish on the final day of the Paralympics as the Japanese men took bronze in two classes and world-record holder Misato Michishita upgraded her silver from Rio 2016 to take the gold medal in the women’s T12 (sight-impaired) marathon. “I felt the power of the people cheering, supporting us. The Paralympic Games were held in Tokyo, in our home country. Their cheering pushed us a lot,” Michishita said. “While running, I heard the voices of my coaches and people that I know, who gave us a big energy.
So I was very excited to run here.” First off were the men’s wheelchair racers, followed 10 minutes later by the women. Marcel Hug was the race favourite among the men, having earlier won gold medals in his class at 800m, 1500m and 5000m. He readily took the lead but China’s Yong Zhang stuck to him doggedly as they built up a lead of two minutes over a chasing group of four in the first half of the race. It looked as if there would be a sprint finish to decide all three medals but, although Zhang was effectively saving himself by slipstreaming Hug, the Swiss powered away

up a slope to the 40km point and swept around a corner to give himself a decisive break. Hug increased his lead to win by about 150m. Behind him Daniel Romanchuk (USA) used exactly the same tactic to escape from the chasing group and take the bronze medal. In the women’s race the American Susannah Scaroni raced into the lead and by 25km had built a 90-second advantage over the chasing pack. But her solo effort took its toll. Her lead dwindled until she was caught and by 40km was trailing by a minute. For three of the five who passed her it was all left to play for in the final kilometre. Australia’s Madison de Rozario entered the stadium with a small lead as Switzerland’s Manuela Schaer closed the gap and looked poised to pounce in the home straight. But de Rozario held her off as the pair crossed the finish line less than a second apart. “That was the longest 500m I’ve ever pushed through,” said de Rozario. “To come into the
stadium with a bit of a gap was nice… that finish line couldn’t come quick enough.” Li Chaoyan was defending the title he won in Rio 2016 in the T-46 (limb disability) category but ‘defensive’ was hardly the word for the surge he put in at halfway. Tsutomu Nagata went with him while Alex Pires De Silva let them go. Li soon dropped Nagata, going on to set a new Paralympic record of 2:25:50, while Da Silva’s strong finish took him past Nagata for the silver medal. In the men’s T12 (visually impaired) race Morocco’s El Amin Chentouf raced away to hold a 2 minutes 30 seconds advantage by halfway. He continued in splendid isolation to finish 4:26 ahead of Australia’s world record holder Jaryd Clifford. Japan’s Tadashi Horikoshi gauged his effort finely after the chasing pack broke up. Initially holding back, he later regained ground to put himself into the bronze medal position

after 35km. Then the grand finale came as Michishita took to the stage. In her short-stride pattering style she played a waiting game until the Russian Elena Pautova seemed to be edging ahead. As if this was the signal she needed Michishita raised her pace and from 30km built up a winning margin of nearly three and a half minutes. “And with that, the Tokyo Paralympics were over,” wrote Brett Larner of Japan Running News. “Despite the rain, the early start, the serious state of the pandemic, and organizers’ efforts to discourage people from spectating on the course, crowds lined the route everywhere we went. And we didn’t even go to any of the most popular spots where you could see runners three times without having to move. Few cheered out loud, most just clapping – an acknowledgement of at least one of the government’s requests for how to act during the pandemic. “The MGC Race Olympic trials (held in 2019) and the promise it had for the kind of crowds that would turn out seem like a distant memory now. But the crowds were still some of the biggest in Paralympic history, if not the biggest. Can you imagine what they would have been like if the Olympic marathons had been in Tokyo? And without the pandemic?” Distance Running | 2021 Edition 4

The debutante
In the 2003 London Marathon Paula Radcliffe reached her pinnacle of performance in breaking the world record for the women’s Marathon by such a margin that it remained unbeaten for 16 years. But it was the previous year’s race which had set her on the path to Marathon greatness.
Radcliffe had been a presence in international competition for almost a decade, after winning the Junior (under-20) category at the 1993 World Cross Country Championships. On a snowbound course in Boston she defeated Wang Junxia, who became 10,000m world record holder later that year, and Gete Wami – the 2001: Women’s 10,000m final at the 8th IAAF World Athletic Championships in Edmonton, Canada. Stu Forster/Allsport/Getty
Ethiopian runner whose fast finishes were to thwart Radcliffe in many top-flight contests on both track and country in the coming years.
In her first senior cross-country race, at the start of 1993, Radcliffe finished second to Olympic 10000m champion Derartu Tulu. She found that her first experience against Tulu played out repeatedly as she would contest the race strongly, often front-running, whether over country or on the track – but was usually frustrated by faster-finishing runners who would take top honours with a quick sprint finish. The usual pattern of runners’ career progression at the time was ‘going up the distances’
from the middle to the longer track races and cross country to road races before tackling the Marathon. Before women had been officially permitted to run longer distances this had been a progression that the men had followed over the decades: Emil Zatopek, Ron Hill, Carlos Lopes and Steve Jones had all taken this journey. The same trajectory was followed by Grete Waitz in the build-up towards the marathon becoming accepted as an Olympic distance for women. Even before this happened Waitz had tested herself in the 1978 New York City Marathon. as a deliberate experiment in extending her athletic career. It worked, and she lowered the ‘world best time’ with her annual outings in New York from 2:32 to 2:27 to 2:25 before winning the 1983 World Championship Marathon in 1983. Radclliffe wasn’t anywhere near the end of her career in the late 1990s but did face something of an impasse in competition as she finished 2nd, 2nd and 3rd in the World Cross Country between the years 1997–1999. In 2000 she decided to run the World Half Marathon Championships and promptly took her first world title. She retained it the following year, finishing well clear of the opposition. With a move to road running came a move up in distance, and Radcliffe no longer needed to worry about the last-lap kick of her former rivals, as she was routinely able to outpace them well before the finish line was reached. After achieving immediate global success at the Half Marathon it was inevitable that sooner or later she would be ready to test herself in a Marathon – and almost as inevitable that that Marathon would be London. The 2002 London Marathon women’s race was billed as a battle between the defending cham-

pion Deratu Tulu and Radcliffe, the ‘newcomer’ to the Marathon – although the pair had been competing against each other in cross country and on the track on and off for eight years. Soon after the start a lead group of five, headed by Radcliffe, opened up a gap but the chasing group got back together again after a couple of kilometres. It seemed as if Radcliffe was tempering her urge to push on ahead and instead content to keep company with the group. She continued to lead alongside Tulu but in the 15th kilometre started to edge ahead and by 10 miles (16.1km) she had an eight-second advantage. Running without others around her seemed to act as a release as she steadily increased her lead to pass through halfway 50 seconds clear, in 1:11:04. In a post-race interview Radcliffe said: “I felt as though I was running relaxed. The crowd was brilliant around the Cutty Sark and even better at Tower Bridge. By that stage [at halfway] I had a minute lead, so I thought I might as well push on.” And push on she did, running the following three kilometres at 3:09 pace. Having abruptly disposed of the competition she was now eyeing the clock, and the World record set by Catherine Ndereba in Chicago six months before, of 2:18:47. Radcliffe scaled back slightly, as if recalibrating her own internal clock, and settled into a fast but steady rhythm which carried her through the second half of the race in 1:07:52 – over three minutes faster than her first half.

Her time of 2:18:56 was the fastest-ever recorded in a women-only race and would retrospectively become a world record when IAAF (now World Athletics) recognised a category distinction between women-only and mixed races (which allowed women to be paced by men). By the criteria of the time Radcliffe’s performance was second to Ndereba’s record: “I

wanted to set the world record,” she said, “but I’d given everything and couldn’t have gone any faster.” Not on that day perhaps, but with a more even distribution of effort it seemed highly likely that she would do so in some future race. Six months later in Chicago, in a head-to-head with Ndereba, the two shadowed each other for much of the race, half hidden by surrounding male runners, before Radcliffe forced the pace in the latter stages to win by over two minutes and improve Ndereba’s world record time by 89 seconds to 2:17:18. She didn’t stop there. 364 days after her debut marathon she competed again in London, this time full-on from the start: “[In] the first mile nobody seemed to want to go with us and we weren’t running that fast so I just relaxed and followed the two guys.” (these were male pacemakers who had been inserted into the race to help squeeze out the fastest possible time from Radcliffe). She ran under five minutes for the third (albeit downhill) mile and was away on her own, increasing her advantage relentlessly. By Tower Bridge (20km) she was ahead by a minute, and those immediately behind her were over-stretching themselves as Radcliffe’s most serious rival, Ndereba, was even further adrift. “I was just trying to stay relaxed until halfway and then just keep it going,” she said “but it was really, really tough for the last five miles (8km)”. Despite the effort required – or perhaps because of it – Radcliffe in fact increased her pace slightly. Her time of 2:15:25 won her the race by a margin of four minutes and broke her own world record by just under two minutes. It was a bravado performance – but presaged by her ground-breaking run of the year before, one that launched her on a second phase of her running career in which she attracted worldwide and lasting renown. Races in the time of covid Consulting a race calendar over the past 18 months has been a cause for increasing bewilderment, argues Hugh Jones. Many races in the first half of last year were postponed to the second half but, as the covid pandemic ground on and a second round of postponements started, races remained thin on the ground and hard to find in anything other than virtual form. Some did go ahead but had to be radically changed to get permission at a time when there was no vaccine available to defend against the rampant infection feared by the sanitary authorities. Race organisers drew up anti-Covid precautions and comprehensive hygiene plans to minimise the risk of infections but City administrations were busy implementing their own ‘social distancing’ measures and saw anything which gathered people together as threatening. In a survey of races in Germany reasons behind cancellations were given as a rigid cap on the number of participants, the need to extend the start phase into smaller waves or starting blocks; the responsibility organisers had to accept for preventing spectators gathering at the start and finish area (or anywhere along the course) and the need to deploy many more race officials to manage the changed starting protocols. In the United Kingdom race organisers faced a similar official attitude and called upon Government to review restrictions on races in line with consistent evidence of the low risk of transmission of COVID-19 at outdoor participatory sporting events. With the vaccination programmes started from January 2021 a new hiatus set in. Races continued to be restricted to small fields until such time as a significant majority of the population
had been vaccinated. In the United Kingdom the Government deemed this achieved by 19 July – much-hyped as ‘Freedom Day’ – when many restrictions were lifted, including rules on social distancing. Race organisers were quick to take advantage – ending months of stonewalling by local government agencies which up until then had been unwilling to shoulder responsibility for public events within their areas. On 1 August a Half Marathon was held in London with 10,950 finishers. It seemed as if the gates had opened and runners could run in races again. Other countries took what could be called a middle path, consulting and negotiating with the civic authorities to develop ‘hygiene concepts’ that would minimise the risk of infections. Among these were the Midnight Sun Marathon in Norway and the Midnight Sun Run in Iceland.
Midnight Sun Marathon, Norway. 19 June 2021 Race director Nils Heatta explains “We went ahead with a limit on the number of runners to conform to the Covid-19 infection plan we adopted. We had 2310 entered for the race as the maximum, but only 1685 started. Travel restrictions during the Covid-19 meant that we could not count on foreign runners in 2021 which inevitably meant it would be a small marathon field. Most of the locals and Norwegians run the shorter distances. Due to the global pandemic Covid-19, the government in Norway introduced strict rules for sport events. We adopted the National Institute
of Public Health’s infection control requirements. We followed the national guidelines to prevent infection and to ensure a safe event for all our participants and volunteers. The event was divided into 11 “groups” with 200 per “group”. That meant we had to change the start times for the races to be able to have time enough for three distances. The Marathon start was changed from late evening to 09:00 in the morning. The Half-marathon started at 14.30 and the 10km at 19:00 in the evening. Participants in the different groups had to be kept separate and not mixed with others. As we had a limit of 400 for the Marathon, we held two Marathon “races”. The Half marathon, with 800 runners, was divided into four “races”. The start was organised in groups of 25 runners per start with one minute between each start. After the last 25 runners started in the first group, we had a 10 minutes pause before we could start a new race with 200 runners. We had to finish one distance before the next could be started. This of course took a lot of time. Runners participating did not have to be vaccinated but they had to sign a Health declaration. Participants were very disciplined and followed our advice not to arrive too early to the start area and not to stay in the finish area after finishing the race. We created a fenced-in area that runners could only enter with a start number that showed their start time. Runners were only required to wear masks when they picked up their start number. All side events were cancelled. There was no prize ceremony; the winners picked up their prizes individually. Distance Running | 2021 Edition 4

Midnight Sun Run, Iceland, 24 June 2021
In Germany there seemed to be more variable responses from local authorities to the prospect of re-starting mass races.
We followed every rule from the authorities and had meetings with Ministry of Health, the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency management as well as City authorities before finalising how we would conduct the event.
The Generali Berlin Half Marathon, 22 August 2021
We protected participants with social distancing and infection control rules, which staff enforced as well as controlling the flow of runners and preventing them from congregating at the finish line. All staff wore masks but there was no requirement for participants to do so. We had a small ceremony right after the first three men and women in each distance had finished – this year it was very low key. Other countries looked ready to restart mass events because, even though the proportion of the population vaccinated was low, the incidence of covid cases was minimal. The fragility of this balance was dramatically highlighted when Australia’s Gold Coast Marathon, scheduled for 4 July, was cancelled only a few days before due to a few cases of covid emerging in Sydney – in response to which a 3-day state-wide lockdown was imposed. 46

Postponed from its usual April slot into August, the Generali Berlin Half Marathon was Germany’s first major international road race since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. “There was very good cooperation with the city so that we could hold the race,” said Jürgen Lock, managing director of organizer SCC Events. Participants had to be either vaccinated, have antibodies or to provide a negative test result to participate. Spectators were advised to keep the minimum distance and to wear face masks. “This had earlier worked very well at our 10km race, the City Night,” said Lock. A total of 15,096 athletes from 130 countries started the 40th edition of the race. 14,508 of them were half marathon runners, making this the biggest race in the world held in 2021 up until then. Other races seem set to follow this example, having previously held smaller races on an
experimental basis such as in Vienna and Lucerne. To date ‘Covid’ races have been those staged with special hygiene regulations including social distancing. There will be many more such races held but some race organisers, where the vaccination rate is high, are beginning to see their way through to a post-covid future. Backing this vision, national tourism authorities in many places are seeking out races as a way of regenerating their market through ‘wellbeing’ events. Or anti-Covid races, you could say.
Lives remembered
Gloria Ratti 1931–2021
Boston Athletic Association has announced the loss of Gloria Ratti, a trailblazer, leader, and loving matriarch of the New England running community. Gloria passed away peacefully on 24 July 2021, aged 90, surrounded by her family. A South Boston native, Gloria (Graceffa) was involved in the BAA Boston Marathon over five decades in a variety of roles, eventually as Secretary of the B.A.A. Board of Governors.
Gloria Ratti with Bobbi Gibb and Joann Flaminio in 2016
Patriots’ Day was when Gloria shined brightest. From sunup to sundown, she was everywhere: escorting dignitaries around the start in Hopkinton; leading the Grand Marshal towards the finish in Boston; teaching politicians how to properly place the olive wreath upon a champion’s head (“If it falls off, you’re in big trouble!”); and sharing bits of race history with newly crowned winners. Everyone felt personally connected to the Boston Marathon through Gloria.
“Gloria was the First Lady of our sport, no matter where she went,” said Guy Morse, former B.A.A. Executive Director, Boston Marathon Race Director, and a long-time colleague of hers. “Gloria cared for everyone and represented the human side of running. She strived to make the Boston Marathon a personal experience for so many and was also the moral authority that helped propel the entire organization forward.” She began volunteering at the Boston Marathon finish line in the 1960s. It was Gloria who first instructed finish line officials to record the names and times of all finishers not just the top 100 as had been the norm. Ever since then, the marathon has kept track of all who’ve crossed the famed Boylston Street finish line. In the 1970s Gloria stepped in to provide assistance and recognition as the women’s running movement was beginning to take shape. Her sense of loyalty to the race, running community and women runners was evident. She devised an innovative system to keep track of the women’s leaders and better showcase their talents. Stationing officials all along the course, Gloria trained each to accurately identify and record athletes as they passed by. Long before tracking technology became the norm Gloria established a system that would uphold the integrity and authenticity of her city’s race. It soon expanded to include the MA Governor Charlie Baker, Worknesh Degefa, and Gloria Ratti in 2019
Boston Marathon matriarch who brought running community together by Jack Fleming for the Boston Athletic Association wheelchair division, giving the press access to race information that helped bring their stories to life. Gloria was elected to the B.A.A. Board of Governors in 1987. In 1993 she joined the B.A.A. as a full-time employee. She fought to ensure equal prize money – beginning in 1986 when the race shifted from amateur to professional. “The real force of her nature was commitment to excellence,” said B.A.A. President and C.E.O. Tom Grilk. “The core value that drove her was that things should be done as well as possible.” Recognizing Gloria’s sense of history, Guy Morse got her to serve as B.A.A. archivist and historian approaching the centennial Boston Marathon in 1996, aiming to tell the event’s history through artifacts, memorabilia and its many champions. Gloria made everyone feel like the Boston Marathon was their marathon, instilling a sense of pride and ownership of the event that brought the community even closer together.

Distance Running | 2021 Edition 4
“Gloria had terrific stamina especially during race week,” said Joann Flaminio, the first female president of the B.A.A. and a close confidant of Gloria. “She was the first to arrive and last to leave. She spread the good word of the B.A.A. and the Boston Marathon everywhere she went.” One of Gloria’s cherished passions was spreading the organization’s heritage to others. The “Gloria Tour” was a B.A.A. rite of passage for countless colleagues. Walking through the archives, Gloria shared stories dating back to the 1890s in vivid detail. In 2021 Gloria was named by Runner’s World magazine as “The Women’s Running Trailblazer You’ve Never Heard Of”.
