It was a grand return to the live event after the race was only offered ‘virtually’ in 2020 and the 2021 edition was postponed from the usual March date. Kiplimo broke away from the rest of the field after only 3km and went on to deliver what was described as a ”stratospheric” performance. Already a minute ahead at 10km (27:05) he was over two minutes clear at the finish line. Tadese, already a four-time World Half Marathon champion, ran alone at the front from 10km onwards. He broke Samuel Wanjiru’s half marathon world record by 10 seconds – crossing the line in 58:23. His time remained the world record for eight years. Set up in 1991 the Lisbon Half Marathon offered a highly scenic and historical tour of the city, starting from the iconic 25 de April Bridge across the River Tagus. The grand scale of the bridge meant that runners benefitted from the 70m drop from the start to the sealevel finish so that performances on the course were deemed ‘assisted’. At the time there were no world records in road racing but that changed following a decision by

IAAF (as World Athletics was then known) at their 2003 Congress. From then performances on courses conforming to criteria that limited assistance (either from gravity or from possible tailwinds) became acceptable for ratification as world records. Race organisers then began to actively compete to offer “fast” courses. In Lisbon, for the 2008 race, the down-to-earth decision was made that the elite field should forego the scenic high of crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge – the talisman of the popular event – so that they could chase the world record. It did not fall in that race but Zersenay Tadese beat it two years later. Kiplimo’s run has now returned the record to Lisbon.

Sister event to the long-running Sao Silvestre de Luanda New Year’s Eve 10km race the International Peace Half Marathon was set up by the CRDS Events company acting under Angolan law to realise a nationally recognised cultural and sporting event. It will be an international road race with the first edition to be held in the national capital on 4 April 2022. The purpose of the competition is to highlight the transcendent importance of April 4 2004, the date of the signing of the peace agreements, now enshrined in the national calendar as the memorable day of peace and as a national holiday We intend to hold the competition for approximately 5000 runners drawn from professionals, national level athletes, veteran and mass runners of both sexes. We became a member of AIMS because it is a credible organisation in monitoring road races organised on the five continents. Sailor 2nd Barishal Marathon BAN

Barishal is a green land with lots of rivers and canals which is known as the ‘Venice of Bangladesh’. The local people have not yet been bitten by the running bug but the Cosmic Culture Trust aspired to start the endeavour with the vision to run for ‘unity in diversity’. They came up with a plan to launch the first-ever marathon event in Barishal and this was delivered on 22 February 2020. In expressing harmony in physical and mental development and in upholding unity and discipline among the people the marathon experience offers an opportunity to inspire future potential – especially for the youth in advancing towards a higher elevation in the global context, In line with this thinking the organisers were keen to project the event on an international level through affiliation with AIMS. This in turn will encourage individuals and corporate and social organisations to collaborate with host runner communities and to take advantage of a global platform to celebrate the joy of running.

Pushkin – St Petersburg RUS

This Running Festival will take place in the heart of El-Shorouk City, Cairo. Apart from the Marathon it will include half marathon, 10km and 5km races. The course is a 21.0975km lap run once for the Half Marathon and twice for the Marathon and is very fast even though it includes a few ups and downs. The longest hill is less than 400m with less than 5% incline but it provides possibilities for tactical running. The location offers conditions for the best possible running experience: temperatures of 9-15C and 5km and 10km races that are very flat. The route passes city landmarks like Doctor Mohamed Mashali square, named for a great benefactor of the poor through his provision of affordable medical treatment. Maratón Puerto Vallarta MEX

Pushkin is a municipal town within the federal city of St Petersburg, 24km south of the centre. Formerly Tsarskoye Selo (“Tsars village”) it was re-named Pushkin in 1937. The 95th Pushkin – St Petersburg run will take place on 4 September 2022. The race was revived in 2021 by the well-known PushkinRun team. First run on 14 October 1923, it is the oldest race in Russia and one of the oldest in Europe. The distance and the start and finish have been adjusted but the race’s identity remains unchanged. It was only cancelled in wartime (1941–43), due to the ‘Leningrad affair’ in 1949 and because of the Covid pandemic in 2020. The organiser of the PushkinRun series of races, Dmitry Pavlov, is particularly keen on preserving the sporting traditions of St Petersburg and bringing them up to the level of top events in the world. He has himself run the six ‘Majors’. Participants traditionally receive a badge at the finish line but in 2021 the PushkinRun team added a medal. Halfway in the Madrid Marathon (2004)

40 years of AIMS The ‘Association of International Marathons’ was officially founded at a meeting held in London on 6–7 May 1982 but the idea of such an association had been gathering momentum for some time. Mass participation marathons run on the streets of the World’s major capitals were a recent innovation. They had previously been confined to laps of public parks or quiet country back-roads which could easily accommodate the modest fields of 100–200 committed enthusiasts. Only Boston, the grandfather of Marathons, had exceeded 1000 runners before the New York Marathon was run through the city’s five boroughs for the American Bicentennial in 1976. This was what broke the mould. In a startling transformation space was made available for thousands of runners to flood the city centre on Marathon day, bringing a celebratory atmosphere with them. As New York’s numbers grew rapidly in the next few years other races sprang up explicitly modelled on the example that had been set. By 1980 there was a growing band of organisers widely scattered throughout the world. The Honolulu Marathon had been started as a small event in 1973 with 150 runners but it was so successful that by 1976 there were 1400 finishers – close behind New York. Many organisers were already travelling to observe and learn from each other’s events. At a meeting in Honolulu in December 1980 a group calling itself the ‘International Marathon Race Directors’ (IMRD) was established which met again at the New York Marathon in October 1981. The subject of discussion at the time centred around a ‘World Circuit’ of races advocated by Serge Arsenault of the Montreal Marathon incorporating an individual marathon championship for elite runners. The arrangements discussed had close similarities with what was eventually adopted by the ‘World Marathon Majors’ 25 years later. At a second meeting in Honolulu on 11 December 1981 the IMRD additionally laid plans to formally constitute the group as the Association of International Marathons which is what was done at the meeting in London. There were 29 founding members who were paid up at the meeting* and 19 of them are still members today – although in some cases they have radically transformed (for example, the two elite races in Tokyo, Tokyo Women’s Marathon and Tokyo Men’s Marathon have since been in effect absorbed by the Tokyo Marathon).

that Marathons were the correct distance. At the time there was already a reliable and affordable method of measurement being used but under objectives (i) and (iii) it became AIMS’ primary mission to spread the word so that the ‘calibrated bicycle’ method of measurement eventually became universally accepted and applied. This was just as well, as the world governing body responsible for enforcement of rules, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF, later to become World Athletics) was slow in seeing the potential of big-city mass-participation races. Their purpose was geared towards the elite competitive end of the sport and the new races were often seen as potentially damaging to traditional championship races. The arbitrary but ‘magical’ distance of the Marathon had been formalised as 42195m as far back as 1924. In championship races position counted for more than time in and there had never been a concerted effort to ensure courses were accurate enough to bear comparison between different locations. The ‘calibrated bicycle’ method of measurement was enshrined in the IAAF rule book in the 1980s but it was not until 1995, at a meeting with IAAF instigated by AIMS, that an administrative system was set up by which measurements could be policed. Since that time AIMS has maintained its measurement mission in co-operation with IAAF. IAAF resisted the recognition of world records at the marathon distance on the grounds that courses were not comparable. AIMS proposed a maximum allowable overall ’drop’ of the course and straight-line separation of start and finish so that possible assistance afforded by gravity or a potential tailwind was limited. From 2003 this became the basis on which what had been called ‘World Bests’ have since then been credited as World Records. AIMS’ original membership remained stable, with only slight growth in the early years, but with the publication of the first AIMS yearbook in 1985 the dynamic had begun to change. The yearbook featured a race calendar. This in itself was a recognition that AIMS’ reach had to extend beyond its member race organisations to connect with the runners themselves. To this end the A5-format booklet also carried advertisements for member races and a total of 200,000 copies were circulated by member events to their runners.

Those present approved a constitution and elected Will Cloney of the BAA Boston Marathon as the first AIMS President. Members attending this ‘Establishing Congress’ also laid down a succinct list of three main objectives: (i) to foster and promote running throughout the world; (ii) to work with IAAF (now World Athletics) on all matters relating to international Marathons; and (iii) to exchange information, knowledge and expertise among members of the Association.

Mass participation marathons were already becoming a significant market within the sports tourism sector. In 1986 AIMS membership, now approaching 50 races, was extended to include races over distances other than the marathon. The New York City Marathon in particular was attracting over 10,000 foreign runners each year – often accompanied by supporters and staying a for a full week. With runners bringing so much money in it was no wonder that more and more cities became interested in setting up races, often promoting them through their national or regional tourist offices.

through the covid-19 pandemic damped it down, it was the main driver of growth in the running market as runners were in continuous pursuit of new challenges in more distant and exotic locations. The AIMS Yearbook kept track with this trend, as membership neared 100 races, by increasing frequency of publication to two editions a year in 1992. It was then re-launched as Distance Running and progressed through three editions to become (by 2003) a quarterly magazine of 84 pages in A4 format and full colour. Each edition showcased a selection of the (by then) 170 AIMS member races. No other publication could offer such a wide range of races with such a vast geographical spread. It proved an effective platform from which member races could promote themselves – and increasingly so as AIMS membership grew steadily to reach a pre-Covid peak of 470 in 2019. The steady progress in membership numbers, in technological application and in economic impact has wrought dramatic changes to what was, within living memory, a sport for a small minority of eccentrics. But some of the greatest moments in the last 40 years since AIMS was founded were when in the words of Chris Brasher, one of the founding fathers of AIMS, the marathon could “show to mankind that, on occasions, they can be united”. These moments may have been in celebration – after the fall of the Berlin Wall, of the Boston Marathon centenary race or the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon. More tellingly perhaps it was when such solidarity lent morale and support to the victims of tragedy. After the atrocities perpetrated in New York and Washington in 2001, in Madrid in 2004 and in Mumbai in 2008 the Marathons which followed in those cities proved cathartic and helped people to find their voice again. When the Boston Marathon itself became a target for bombing in 2013 the race proved an effective means of rallying the entire city to become “Boston Strong”. Distance Running | 2022 Edition 1

Get moving in Muscat Organisers expect new record turnout in biggest event yet The Al Mouj Muscat Marathon will return in 2022 after the global pandemic forced the cancellation of the event in 2021. Oman’s most popular mass participation event is a two-day festival of running at Muscat’s most luxurious destination. Oman Sail is partnering with Oman’s premier Sports Agency, Sabco Sports, to ensure that the 2022 event will be the biggest Muscat Marathon yet. First held in 2012 the Muscat Marathon was originally organised by Muscat Road Runners who remain a key part of the event team. Since then it has grown annually both in size and impact to become a global event of increasing standing. The 2020 event saw over 10,000 registrations and the organisers expect a new record to be set as Oman comes out of the Covid pandemic. As in previous years the marathon will be held on the first day of the weekend, Friday 11 February, along with the half marathon, marathon relay and the 10km run. The popular 5km run and all the Kids Runs (over three distances) will again be held on the second day of the weekend, Saturday 12 February. The 2022 route will continue to take in the beautiful coastal sites along the shoreline of the Arabian Peninsula and will be run through the Al Mouj Muscat property. With ideal running temperatures and a flat course the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon is a perfect event for both local and international runners. ■ muscatmarathon.om

Looking ahead | 13 February 2022 Giulietta & Romeo Half Marathon, Italy

The City of Verona is known as the homeland of lovers thanks to Shakespeare’s masterpiece dedicated to the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet. Verona, with its alleys, squares and monuments, tells many stories of the past and embodies an immense cultural heritage. Verona was a Roman city with its amphitheatre, the Arena, its Roman Theatre and the city gates. The UNESCO World Heritage site designation in 2000 also recognised the rich history that followed, exemplified in the Medieval Stone Bridge, Castel Vecchio and the Romanesque and Gothic churches. The impact of the Renaissance is seen in the palaces of the Veronese aristocracy designed by the great Veronese architect Michele Sammicheli.

Verona in love Heritage city welcomes those who love to run

The Giulietta & Romeo Half Marathon will take place in this setting and at the time of the Valentine’s Day festival, on 13 February. The city will be illuminated in red in honour of Love celebrated by the Verona in Love event. The last edition of the Giulietta & Romeo Half Marathon was run on 13 June 2021, when 3500 runners finally laced up their shoes to participate in the first Italian Federation ‘Gold Label’ half marathon of 2021 to be staged on Italian roads. It marked the return to mass events after the darkest period of the Covid 19 pandemic.

The return to the usual February date will bring thousands of people to Verona for the very fast course which passes through the historic centre twice. Runners get a good look at the Arena which, at 1991 years, is the world’s oldest amphitheatre still in use. The course takes in the Church of San Fermo Maggiore and then crosses the Piazza delle Erbe and skirts the Basilica of Sant’Anastasia and the Church of Sant’Eufemia.

Veronese cuisine is characterized by the richness and variety of the products of its land and by the wine production. Since the days of ancient Rome the noble families of Verona had achieved fame for the lunches offered during luxurious receptions. Over the centuries Veronese cuisine has risen to an authentic art, devising exquisite dishes with flair and imagination even with the simplest products.

The racing efforts end with the majestic Castelvecchio and the monumental Porta Palio before the finish line inside the Bentegodi Stadium.

Lake Garda lies only a stone’s throw away from Verona. It is the largest Italian lake, connecting Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige. Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and possessed of the flattest marathon course in the entire continent To talk about the Zurich Seville Marathon is to talk about a race full of reasons why you would want to be there. Two of them stand out: speed and beauty. It is not just any course, but the one with the lowest cumulative elevation gain of all the marathons held in Europe. There is a difference of only 10m between the lowest and the highest point of the course. There is nothing to stop you smashing your personal best on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. In 2020, immediately before Coronavirus started disturbing our lives, the event was on the brink of being one of the top 10 marathons in the world in terms of speed (considering the winning time). It ranks number 11, up there with the great marathons we all have in mind. 1104 runners crossed the finish line before the timing clock reached 3:00:00 – an astonishing percentage of the 13,000 runners registered. Ethiopia’s Mekuant Ayenew Gebre (2:04:46) and Uganda’s Juliet Chekwel (2:23:13) were not only the winners – they also became the course record holders of a World Athletics ‘Elite Label’ event and a European Athletics Association ‘5-star’ race. The performances in the last race of the 36 editions held to date were spectacular. Never before had more than 18 runners finished a race under 2:10:18; In Seville 28 of them did.

The records piled up to supersede any prediction: most under 2:08 (14, equalling Dubai 2020), 30 under 2:11 (22 in Valencia 2019). But let’s also look at the not-so-fast runners. Apart from 10.7% of those running finishing in under three hours there were 2075 sub 3:15 (20%), 3495 sub 3:30 (34%), 5000 sub-3:45 (48.8%), 6593 sub 4:00 (64%). Along with the promise of speed we should talk about beauty. The old town of Seville is one of the largest and most attractive in the Old Continent. It is difficult to take a step without running into some artistic wonder and the marathon passes by the most significant ones: Plaza de España, the Giralda and the Alcazar (which, together with the General Archive of the Indies, make up the trio of monuments listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites), the Torre del Oro and the Maria Luisa Park (where the start and finish line are located).

The senses are intensified by the idiosyncrasy of the Sevillian character with joy as a flag and the smile as a way of life. This marathon is a party: there are more than 20 official cheer points but this is nothing compared to the spontaneity of the locals. Race bibs for the 2022 Marathon sold out within three months of being put on sale leaving places only for the virtual race. The good news is that the bibs for 2023 (Sunday, 19 February) will be available through the event website as soon as the current edition (on 20 February 2022) is over. The race was founded back in 1987 when there were not many half marathon races in the region. It was inaugurated by the district municipality as the “Golden Horn Half Marathon” and lasted until 1993. Then, after a 16-year hiatus, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality organised a half marathon on 26 April 2010 with the same theme. It was intended as a one-off event for that year and nostalgically called the 8th edition of the Golden Horn Half Marathon. The race attracted such strong interest, from both public and media, that the Municipality decided to continue with it on a bigger scale resulting in the international Istanbul Half Marathon being held on 27 April 2014. It has been held annually ever since and has become one of the most significant sporting events in Turkey. The event also includes a 10km fun run in which runners choose a non-governmental organisation that they want to support or an issue about which they would like to raise awareness. In the 2021 edition, due to measures taken to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, entry numbers were limited to 4000 in the Half Marathon and to 2000 in the 10km supporting event. These limits were quickly reached two months prior to the race date. In the end N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon provided happiness for 2364 finishers in the 21km and 1013 finishers in the 10km. A simple road sign on Highway 1 inspired the creation of the Big Sur International Marathon Race founder Bill Burleigh noticed a signpost near Rio Road in Carmel which read “Big Sur 26 miles”. He recognised that stretch of road, along one of the most gorgeous and pristine coastlines in the world, would make an ideal marathon course. On the last Sunday in April 1986 1800 runners took part in the inaugural race from Big Sur to Carmel. Now, 36 years later, the Big Sur International Marathon is an annual sell-out bucket list event with around 4500 participants and five other race distances along the same course. Apart from the marathon Highway 1 plays host to a Marathon Relay, 21-Miler, 11-Miler, 12km and 5km, all of which sell out with a total of 10,000 runners across all distances. The Big Sur International Marathon is famous for its unparalleled coastal views and tough, hilly course. The first five miles are mostly downhill through groves of towering redwood trees and the storied village of Big Sur. As runners reach mile 6 (10km), they see their first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean including the scenic Point Pinos lighthouse. After mile 9 (15km), the climb to Hurricane Point comes into view and the runners’ mood changes. The 2-mile (3km) climb to the highest point on the course is a steady 4–5% gradient which seems endless. Once runners crest Hurricane Point they can enjoy sweeping vistas and feel relief and satisfaction from having conquered one of the hardest climbs in any road marathon. The euphoria continues as runners hear the soft sounds of a classical piano floating through the air at the iconic Bixby Bridge. This is halfway through the marathon and many runners stop for a photo with the tuxedo-wearing pianist playing a baby grand piano. At mile 14 runners

pass the tranquil Palo Colorado Canyon before climbing to Rocky Point. At mile 22 another climb, up to Yankee Point, brings runners to Carmel Highlands, the final stretch of rolling hills before reaching the finish line. You run the marathon in the footsteps of Eliud Kipchoge, who was the first and so far the only person to run the marathon distance in under two hours (1:59:40.2) on the Prater Hauptallee on 12 October 2019. At the start, close to the United Nations headquarters beside the River Danube, runners feel the flair of the modern capital. It blends with the most famous sights of this cultural and musical metropolis. During the run you see the Vienna State Opera, Schönbrunn Palace and the great museums. The magnificent Ringstrasse boulevard in the very heart of the city is your home stretch. “The Vienna City Marathon is like a visit to a museum wearing shorts,” says race director Wolfgang Konrad. “We welcome runners from all over the world to enjoy this special atmosphere of culture and togetherness.” Year after year, Vienna is named the world’s most liveable city. The reasons are the diverse cultural and leisure activities, the excellent infrastructure, the large green spaces, safety and good environmental quality. The Vienna City Marathon offers two days of running events for the whole family. As long as 200 years ago running events on the Prater Hauptallee attracted great interest. The first edition of the Vienna City Marathon took place in 1984 with only 794 participants. Since then the enthusiasm for running has developed enormously. The event quickly gained international stature. Running legend Haile Gebrselassie has run the half marathon here three times. In 2012 he clashed with Paula Radcliffe, who started the race with a time allowance, in a fantastic duel between the then world record holders. By 2021 the event regularly attracted over 40,000 runners from more than 125 nations with 8000 runners or more tackling the full marathon distance. The most recent edition of the event was held on 12 September 2021. It was the first big international marathon since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and a highly emotional comeback race after a long standstill. The Viennese health authorities have subsequently confirmed that no covid infections were recorded in connection with the event. 18,000 runners participated in various runs over the weekend. It was well below the usual numbers but a fantastic restart and motivational boost for marathon running. All finishers will receive their medal in the shape of a star. For those who have completed the full marathon of 42195 metres, it will shine in gold and feature a Swarovski crystal. A new sun rising

Steeped in history, Belfast City Marathon moves into its 40th year with a new title sponsor Mash Direct.

The Belfast City Marathon first launched in 1982 as the running boom took off in the early 1980s. Guinness was the title sponsor helping to set up the first event of its kind in the city with 3021 runners completing a two-lap course. As the novelty of marathon running started to fade in the late 1980s the event organisers introduced new events, including the Team Relay in 1989. This consisted of teams of two to five people with each person running a ‘leg’ of the marathon route. The 8-mile walk and fun run events were introduced in 1997 and the Belfast City Marathon became the biggest participatory sporting event in Northern Ireland. Traditionally taking place on the Bank Holiday Monday (first Monday of May) each year it developed into an all-inclusive event for the whole family and helped to generate over $1.5 million annually for local charities. The marathon route changed over the years

A major re-vamp in 2019 extended the course to take in more of the city and its historic sites. The event also moved to a Sunday which was widely supported by participants and communities across the city. Many local churches have embraced Marathon Sunday and provide refreshments and entertainment – some with brass bands and choirs – along the marathon route. The course winds its way through an array of fantastic tourist sites. These include the Stormont Estate Parliament Buildings, dating back to 1755, and Belfast City Hall dating from 1906 (Durban’s City Hall in South Africa was built four years later and is almost a replica of Belfast’s). There are two iconic sculptures on the route: The Salmon of Knowledge – a printed ceramic mosaic including texts and images relating to the history of Belfast, and the Rise Left, the starting line of the first Belfast Marathon in 1982 and, right, Greg Hannon crossing the finish line

Despite a history of civil unrest in Belfast the City Marathon has endured throughout and has become a community-wide event for all. It was cancelled only once, in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic when a virtual option was hosted instead. The 2021 edition, postponed from May, took place in October incorporating the NI and Ulster Marathon Championship, along with the 2021 National Seniors Marathon Championships. In 2022 the Mash Direct Belfast City Marathon returns to its traditional May Bank Holiday weekend (Sunday 1 May), starting from Stormont Estate and finishing at Ormeau Park. Over 16,000 participants are expected in the 40th Anniversary event including Marathon and wheelchair races, the team relay and the 8-mile walk. As a popular international event, Belfast City Marathon attracts participants from all over the world. Course records are 2:13:41 for men (2012) and 2:36:38 for women (2019). The event has sustained itself through community support with help from over 300 volunteers each year. Schools, universities, businesses, and churches all get involved to deliver a successful event. Belfast is renowned for its crowds who cheer the participants on. 125 years and counting BAA Boston Marathon celebrates anniversary

On 11 October Boston Marathon celebrated its 125th edition. Although there were only fifteen competitors in each of the first two races the history of the Boston Marathon runs closely in parallel with the history of Marathon running itself. 1897: The Marathon had been invented as a distance race specifically for the first Olympic Games of the modern era held in Athens on 10 April 1896. Among the 18 starters in the race was Arthur Blake, a member of the Boston

Athletic Association. Although he retired at 23km he returned to Boston along with team coach John Graham and 100m and 400m winner Tom Burke full of enthusiasm for the new event. At their urging the BAA instigated an annual Marathon race to be held on Patriots Day, at that time fixed as 19 April (but after 1968 changed to the third Monday in April). The inaugural winner was John McDermott from New York in a time of 2:55:10. 1900: The first two editions of the race were

known as the American Marathon but as early as 1898 there had been a Canadian winner. In 1900 the Canadians made a clean sweep of the podium and in the following 15 years provided the winner on five occasions. Boston was overwhelmingly a US contest but individuals from Greece and Germany as well as Canada won inter-war editions of the race. After World War II overseas competition became more varied and much fiercer. Boston had to wait until 1957 for another American victory as 11 runners from seven different countries took the spoils. 1907: Tom Longboat, representing Canada and a Native American of the Onandaga First Nation, won the race in a course record time of 2:24:24 after a freight train cut off the leading pack of six from the rest of the field. Johnny Hayes finished in third place six minutes behind Longboat. The pair met again at the 1908 Olympics in London. Longboat was perhaps the Olympic favourite but retired at 16 miles while holding second place. The stomach problems he suffered came on following ministrations by his coach. At the time brandy and strychnine were among the ‘pick-me-ups’ most favoured by coaches. Hayes meanwhile gradually pegged back the long-time race leader after he had “dropped to a walk” but entered the stadium well behind the Italian Dorando Pietri. Visibly suffering from the symptoms of dehydration, Pietri had fallen twice soon after entering the stadium and was surrounded by officials looking on anxiously as he struggled to finish and fell again with only 30m to go. Helped to his feet he sprinted across the line but, after a protest by the Americans against the assistance he had received, was disqualified – and victory was awarded to Hayes. The dramatic and controversial nature of the race sparked huge public interest and over the next few years re-matches were staged between Hayes and Pietri – with Tom Longboat or other contenders often included – in many locations both in Europe and North America. These races attracted heavy betting interest and the courses were all carefully contrived to be of the same length as that of the London Olympics: 26 miles and 385 yards. However, it was not until 1924 that this distance was adopted by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) as the official course length for the Marathon. 1918: The United States entered World War I in 1917 and Patriots Day 1918 fell as Americans were being called to arms. To maintain annual continuity the format of the race had to be changed. Instead of a contest between individuals it became a 10-man relay, with teams drawn from different areas of the military. A team from Camp Devens in Ayer, Massachusetts, won with a time of 2:24:53. Overlapping with the upheaval and destruction of World War I the outbreak of the ‘Spanish’ ‘flu pandemic claimed many millions of lives – more than the war had. The outbreak started in March 1918 and a ‘third wave’ was washing back from Europe to North America at the start of 1919. Despite the huge death toll there was never any question of cancelling the Boston Marathon, or the 1920

1946: Stylianos Kyriakides ran the 50th edition of the race in an effort to draw international attention to starvation faced by Greece in the aftermath of World War II and with the onset of civil war. His late surge past local favourite Johnny A Kelley could only have helped in stimulating the flow of aid to Greece that followed. He became widely appreciated as the first fundraising runner in Marathon history.

She finished in 3:21:40 and returned to compete again in the 1967 and 1968 races but despite initial suggestions that the rules would be changed to allow women’s participation that did not happen until 1972. Kathrine Switzer officially entered the 1967 race using just her initials and surname. In marked contrast to Gibb’s experience as an unofficial participant an official attempted to force Switzer off the course. He failed and she became Boston’s first official female finisher. Nina Kucsik became the first official female winner in 1972 with her 3:10:26 win. In 1996, at the 100th running of the Boston Marathon and the 30th anniversary of Gibb’s first run of it, the Boston Athletic Association recognised her three wins in 1966, 1967, and 1968 and awarded her a medal. Her name was inscribed with the names of the other winners on the Boston Marathon Memorial in Copley Square.

1947: Kyriakides’ win ushered in a period of domination by overseas runners. The very next year the Korean Yun Bok Suh ran a “world-best” 2:25:39 on the Boston course. Marathon courses were regarded as too variable to allow times to be compared but this did not stop journalists calling the time a ‘world record’. Several such performances were acclaimed in this way. Previously comparisons were problematic because the distance had been variable but the amount of downhill and the potential for wind assistance on point-to-point courses now came into consideration. The IAAF’s position, as the rule-making body, was that the term “world best” covered times set on any kind of course of standard length (defined since 1924 as 42195m) but no world record would be recognised. 1966: Roberta ‘Bobbi’ Gibb, in the 70th edition of the race, became the first woman to complete the course. Boston only offered a men’s division so her feat remained unofficial – but did not go unrecognised. After long and thorough preparation she hid in bushes at the start of the race before joining the race at the back of the field. Despite her attempt to pass unnoticed the male runners encouraged her and both the crowd and the press picked up on her presence. Boston organisers showed flexibility and understanding in facilitating her reception at the finish line by

1983: Joan Benoit’s win, in a time of 2:22:43 re-ignited the debate about what could be called a world record. Benoit surpassed the 2:25:29 time set by Grete Waitz in the London Marathon the previous day. There was no doubt that the decline in elevation of the Boston course combined with a following wind could significantly improve times run. This eventually led to the IAAF specifying that performances on courses which declined more than 1m for every kilometre of their length, or had starts and finishes with a straight-line separation of more than 30% (later 50%) of the race distance would not be ‘record-eligible’. Uta Pippig’s 2:21:45 in 1994 and Geoffrey Mutai’s 2:03:02 in 2011 were marks that were inadmissible under the IAAF ruling. Some years after this rule was put in place IAAF agreed that it allowed for sufficient standardisation such that what had been termed “World bests” could be called world records. 1986: For years Boston Marathon had held out against awarding prize money to winners. In the decade since the Bicentennial edition of the New York City Marathon had gone citywide this had been an increasingly anomalous position. A win in Boston still brought great prestige but the class of professional runners now emerging required money rewards for winning and, for those with established reputations, for their Distance Running | 2022 Edition 1

participation. England’s Geoff Smith had won the last two men’s races under a separate agreement with a third-party sponsor but winning times in both men’s and women’s divisions had taken a dip. Introducing prize money had an immediate impact, with winning times greatly improved by ‘name’ runners: world Champion Rob de Castella (2:07:51) and world record holder Ingrid Kristiansen (2:24:55). 1988: Professionalisation unlocked the sport for an increasingly significant talent pool from East Africa. Kenyans were first to emerge with Ibrahim Hussein winning Boston in 1988. Kenyans won 11 of the next 13 men’s races – and one of the other two was won by Ethiopia’s Abebe Mekonnen. Among the women East Africans only came to the fore from 1997 but in both divisions it is a dominance that has continued to date both in Boston and at many other of the world’s most competitive Marathons. 1996: The Boston Centenary race had 35,868 finishers – the most of any marathon up to that time (New York surpassed this number in the 1996

2004 race). Qualifying times had been in place since 1970, aimed at containing the burgeoning demand from slower runners who wanted to complete the revered Boston Marathon. Transponder timing had been used at the Berlin Marathon in 1994 but was still in its early stages of development. It was not introduced in Boston until 2006 along with separate start waves to smooth the flow of runners over the start line. These innovations were not available at the start line of the centenary edition where smooth passage of runners depended largely on their own patience and goodwill. 2004: The elite women’s race, with a field of 35, was set off 29 minutes before the traditional mass start at noon. The change was intended to better showcase the women’s race and also had the effect of preventing male runners from pacing the leading female athletes. The new format featured a close duel as World Champion Catherine Ndereba chased Ethiopia’s Elfenesh Alemu for the first 16 miles before opening up a gap in the final mile to win by 16 seconds.

2013: After the runners in the third starting wave had been going for 4 hours and 10 minutes two bombs exploded along the Boylston Street finishing straight. About 17,500 runners had finished before the incident but about 5000 of them who were still on the course were stopped in their tracks and dispersed while the emergency services attended to the injured and secured the area. Four lives were lost due to the explosions and attacks. Marathons had been previously been used as a means of expressing solidarity with fellow citizens after bombings and other atrocities, as in New York (2001), Madrid (2004) and Mumbai (2009) but this was the first time that a big-city marathon had been specifically targeted by terrorists. In the aftermath of the event runners and citizens from around the globe united as one to celebrate the strength and resiliency of the community. “Boston Strong” became a rallying cry, exemplifying the determination to prevail through adversity. The following year there were 31,000 finishers. 2020: The Covid pandemic did what war, pestilence, bombings and extremes of weather had not managed to do over the 123-year existence of the Boston Marathon: it stopped the race being held. Technology allowed for a “virtual” edition but the physical race had to be cancelled. The 2021 race was shifted to October in the hope that pandemic conditions would have abated sufficiently to go back to staging an “in-person” race. And so it proved, as 15.736 runners showed up at the Hopkinton start line and the 126th edition was announced for Patriots’ Day on Monday 18 April 2022. ■ www.baa.org

Running into history Fukuoka International Marathon, for many years the world’s foremost Marathon, held its 75th and final edition on 5 December 2021. The Japanese Association of Athletic Federations, which was the organiser of the event, decided in March 2021 that the Fukuoka International Marathon would be discontinued due to the loss of sponsors and the high cost of producing the television broadcast. The Fukuoka International Marathon was established as an elite-only men’s marathon back in 1947. It took until the mid-1950s until the race had its first foreign winner but in the following years Fukuoka International grew into a de facto marathon world championships before there was an official event with that name. The glory days were the 1960s through to the 1980s. The course became known as probably the fastest in the world. In 1967 the Australian Derek Clayton proved the point by running a world record time of 2:09:37 on it. The 1970s were monopolised by the big names of Marathon running at the time: Frank Shorter, Jerome Drayton, Bill Rodgers and Toshihiko Seko. In 1981 Rob de Castella set another world record of 2:08:18. From the early 1980s other races, with elite runners racing at the head of huge waves of mass runners, were coming on the scene with Rotterdam in particular laying plausible claim to being just as favourable for setting world records. Top elite runners were now able to choose from a wider range of races and a changing offering of rewards. Fukuoka’s response was to target a selected top-name runner and focus the pre-race publicity around them. Olympic Champions Josia Thugwane, Gezahegne Abera and Haile Gebrselassie all topped the bill at Fukuoka in the 1990s and 2000s.

25,000 entries headed by a strong elite field. This started a re-ordering of the top races in Japan in which the traditional single-sex elite events either merged with new mass participation start-ups or opened their entries up to mass runners of both sexes. A notable exception was Nagoya which remained a single-sex race but very quickly grew to be the largest women-only marathon in the world. The mass of alternatives opening up both overseas and domestically hurt Fukuoka. The rapid rise of the Valencia Marathon in particular, which shared its race date with Fukuoka, hit hard. Then the launch of the mass-participation Fukuoka Marathon four weeks before Fukuoka International’s traditional date on the first Sunday of December further undermined the longstanding elite race’s chances of survival. A move to combine the two races in the same way Tokyo had done was resisted by the Fukuoka International organisers, and the race was history.

Brett Larner adds a personal note: Of all the races that have gone under since I started Japan Running News Fukuoka makes me the saddest. The year I ran Fukuoka International Samuel Wanjiru won it in his debut. Not just for the true elite but for highlevel amateurs across Japan and worldwide, qualifying for the Fukuoka International Marathon was a point of pride, especially hitting its A-standard and getting to start on the track with the big boys. I wore my hat from it when running a few days ago and still prize it and my post-race towel highest among the things I’ve gotten at races over the years. Time marches on and Japan can be very slow to modernize in a lot of areas. The move to big budget mass-produced McMarathons isn’t all a bad thing, but it’s really hard not to feel that something is being lost. Small races that put an emphasis on excellence were part of what made Japan unique, and for generations they motivated the dreamers every season the same way the U.S. Olympic Trials do every four years for the majority with no chance of making an Olympic team. A sporting flagship On Sunday 7 November 2021 the New York City Marathon celebrated its 50th anniversary. Berlin Marathon founder Horst Milde pays tribute where it is due NYC Marathon sent out a lot of press releases in the run-up to its 2021 race. New York was teeming with activities, programs and side events for the 50th anniversary race but it struck me that there was almost nothing about the race’s initiator and co-founder, Fred Lebow. I did catch sight of an article by Hailey Eber, who wrote in the New York Post “The first New York City Marathon was nothing like Sunday’s big race, but the two have one important thing in common: Fred Lebow”. The New York City Marathon and its organisers were responsible for triggering the worldwide boom in running that began in the mid-1980s and which has continued to this day. The New York City Marathon has always been very motivating and inspiring – and provided a role model worthy of being copied.

About 2000 people started the race and 1,549 finished – surpassing Boston’s numbers to become the largest marathon in the world. “We all knew we had an instant success – one that would become an annual institution and the best day in the life of New York City. Everyone agreed that Lebow had done a great job.”

I am among those many race organisers who are deeply indebted to Fred Lebow. We followed his example and organised our own races and marathons in many parts of the world. He was the one who sensed that running could have a future. Lebow was a Romanian-born Holocaust survivor who worked in Manhattan’s garment district. He organized the first New York City Marathon in 1970. It was a modest event: 126 men and one woman lined up at the start and then ran several laps around Central Park. According to Richard O’Brien in “New York City Marathon: 50 Years Running“ (Skyhorse Publishing) “The New York City Marathon as we know it didn’t really take off until 1976. At that time an official and local runner named George Spitz suggested expanding the race to all five boroughs. Lebow thought that was too ambitious.

‘“A race like that could cost $15,000 – where are we going to get that kind of money?“ Lebow demanded. But Spitz persisted and got then-Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton on board. Sutton found a local businessman who raised $25,000 for the event, and things took off.’ In Berlin it was similar: the race was launched in 1974 as the 1st Berlin People’s Marathon with the course mainly in the Grunewald Forest. There were 286 runners entered of which 244 finished. In 1981 Berlin followed New York’s example and moved the race downtown (West Berlin) with the start at the Reichstag and the finish on Kurfürstendamm. “1976, that was the starting point,“ writes George Hirsch, former publisher of Runner’s

I met Fred at the Stockholm Marathon in 1981 when I was trying to convince the Berlin police director Heinz Ernst to allow us to organize a marathon in the centre of Berlin. I introduced myself to Fred and his advice to me, while handing over the revered NYC T-shirt, was “Don’t get confused, don’t give up trying to convince the authorities and whoever else in Berlin to bring running to the city centre for the people.“ He helped me to persuade the police that runners also have the right to use Berlin’s streets. Fred ran the NYC Marathon for the first and only time in 1992. He was 60 years old and undergoing follow-up treatment for a brain tumour. Grete Waitz, his good friend and nine-time NYC marathon winner, ran the entire distance alongside him. He and Grete were cheered on at every turn by crowds of New Yorkers who recognized and clearly appreciated this cause for which he had done so much: this great annual celebration of urban life and spirit. With his New York City Marathon, Fred Lebow gave his city a sporting flagship that is admired worldwide. The running community remembers him with great appreciation. ■ www.tcsnycmarathon.org

First mixed distance run in Saudi Arabia Khobar International Half Marathon, Saudi Arabia 27 November 2021 For the first time ever Saudi Arabia has hosted a mixed international race headed by an elite field. The race was the Khobar International Half Marathon held on 27 November on a certified course and attended by Prince Khalid bin Talal. There were 607 starters in the half marathon (21% women) with equal prize money to be won in the men’s and women’s categories. The 18 elite men and seven elite women came from 11 countries. The race started at 15.00 and conditions were hot and windy. Kenyans Rhonzas Kilimo and Gloria Kite had clear wins with 1:02:05 and 1:12.42 respectively.

The course was mainly out and back along the broad corniche road with a diversion inland between 14–19km. Apart from the headline race this ground-breaking event also offered an 8km race (472 starters of which 37% were women) and a family run of 3km. A special needs event was also conducted over 3km. The 8km and 3km courses were out-back using the same start/ﬁnish as the title event.

Khobar is a city on the Arabian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia just north of Bahrain. It is home to

457,748 people and as of 2017 forms part of the ‘Triplet Cities’ or Dammam metropolitan area along with the cities of Dammam and Dhahran.

Valencia Ciudad del Running

The city of Valencia has in recent years hosted performances previously seen as the preserve of a few traditionally prestigious races. How did Valencia manage to get in on the act? In early 1980, thanks to a visionary running enthusiast called Miguel Pellicer, the Sociedad Deportiva Correcaminos Club was born. Alongside it the Maratón Popular de Valencia was founded and the first edition was run on 29 March 1981 – the same day as the first London Marathon. Although Valencia is far smaller than Madrid and Barcelona, the two biggest cities in Spain, it has two main advantages when it comes to the Marathon: its climate and its topography. On typical winter mornings the temperature is between 8–13ºC. The Marathon course ranges between a 3m minimum altitude and a 13m maximum. It could be considered a paradise for fast running. These advantages have always been there for all those marathons run every year since 1981, and since 1991 also for a 20km race which a few years later became a half-marathon. So what changed in recent years to make the races in Valencia such prolific sources of fast times?

The election of Paco Borao, representing the Valencia Marathon, as President of AIMS in 2010 marked an initial step. It immediately occurred to the city administrators that this could present an opportunity to promote Valencia through sport, in this case a mass participation sport like the Marathon. With this in mind they proposed a joint organising team of the local administration and Correcaminos to give the strong push necessary to set up the best possible event. Among the changes geared towards making this happen was to move the race dates from February to October/November, to better attract European runners, and to move the Start and Finish lines into the ‘City of Arts and Sciences’. This futuristic environment, rated among the 12 ‘Treasures of Spain’, provides a stage from which to project the races in a highly effective way, with the last 100m giving the appearance that competitors are running on water. This was all done under the agreement between the Correcaminos club and the Valencia administration. Valencia City began to express interest in actively promoting running tourism as the ‘Ciudad del Running’. Registrations were already beginning to increase and interest was heightened by the impressive start and finish locations and the realisation that all comers were starting to record faster times than elsewhere, and faster than previously in Valencia. The stage was set quickly – the 2011 race was held in November – but the necessary dynamic was not yet in place to attract the world’s fastest. It came through the city

administration linking together with a private entity the Fundación Trinidad Alfonso (FTA) and its president Juan Roig. Roig was watching National TV news at home and the commentator remarked that the Valencia Marathon was like New York in starting on a bridge and finishing at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. It sparked his interest such that he ‘fell in love’ with the race and enquired about the Foundation becoming the event sponsor. Paco Borao recalls: “We reached the agreement which formally started with the Half-Marathon – at that time it had no major sponsor. It was only in 2014, when the previous agreement expired, that the Foundation extended its sponsorship to the Marathon.” With the City and the Foundation fully signed up to the project the ‘glue’ holding it together was a modest running club: Correcaminos. “I always tried to convince everybody that the perfect balance is having a big number of mass registrations to support a good elite field, and have a good elite field to motivate the popular runners,” said Borao. Valentijn Trouw, of the athlete management agency Global Sports Communications, agreed: “I feel a great energy and spirit in Valencia to

make running important. This counts both for the elite athletes and the masses. That Valencia is flat and has a friendly weather environment helps but it is the sincere will and dedication to serving the athletes, of all different levels, which is the starting point. It is what is most important to succeeding in the way that Valencia is at the moment.” Juan Botella, with responsibility for assembling the elite field, gives insight from another angle: “We choose the elite field 13 months before the event, on the basis of a ‘dream list’ which would excite fans into getting up to watch the race on TV. We mix and match track and road runners for maximum impact. Then we go to the athlete managers and have to compete with the money of the Marathon Majors to get what we want. In the end we always get five or six of the athletes we dream of. “Then we maintain weekly contact with their managers. The runners we choose are our team. This is very important, because we sign men and women, not just names. We also bring in promising youngsters even if they have never left Kenya and Ethiopia.

“Through the MyBest42 Program, we add elite or sub-elite runners who are among the best in their country, even if they are not capable of winning our races; it is about building a total marathon with many groups, many objectives and many nationalities. We are proud that the winner in 2020 ran 2:03:00 but maybe even more so that there were 50 runners from 25 countries who ran under 2:15. I think it’s an exciting and effective mix. “In last four years, four half marathon World Records have been broken in Valencia (three female, one male), and it was never exactly the same course. We never stop polishing and improving. We dream of becoming the Everest of Marathons in this humble but beloved town called Valencia.”

Currently both men’s and women’s half marathon world records were set in Valencia – but how long before it extends to the Marathon as well? The men’s course record needs to improve by 82 seconds to also become a world record, and it has done so by more than that in the previous two years. Mel LivesWatman remembered Longtime editor of the UK publication Athletics Weekly considered athletics journalism as its own reward Leading athletics writer and statistician Mel Watman died of cancer on 17 September at the age of 83. Best known for his contributions to Athletics Weekly and later Athletics International, Watman was admired by his peers and athletics enthusiasts all around the world. He was born in London in 1938 and became an athletics fan after a school trip to the 1950 AAA [English] Championships. He chanced upon a copy of Athletics Weekly during the trip and a few years later became a contributor to the pocket-sized (A5) magazine. He trained as a journalist and set off around the world to report on major championships and interview top athletes. He joined Athletics Weekly full time in 1961, working alongside the magazine’s founder and editor, Jimmy Green. By then he had already become a founder member of the National Union of Track Statisticians.

“For the next 26 years, although working crazily long hours, I could not have been happier in my work,” Watman said. “My salary was much lower than what my Fleet Street colleagues were earning but that was more than compensated by the job satisfaction and opportunity to travel the world.” Watman became editor of Athletics Weekly in 1968, giving increased prominence to international coverage and ensuring a more balanced treatment of men’s and women’s events. He remained editor until the late 1980s when ownership of the magazine changed. With Randall Northam he edited a rival start-up magazine, Athletics Today but by 1993 the venture had proved unsustainable. After another change of ownership at Athletics Weekly Watman resumed his old role as a contributor although his energies were mainly directed towards making the Athletics International

newsletter an essential reference source for journalists all over the world. In recent years he was inducted into the England Athletics hall of fame and awarded the Ron Pickering Memorial Award for Services to Athletics. Not long after covering the Tokyo Olympic Games Watman collapsed at his home in North London and was later diagnosed with an inoperable cancer of the spine, which progressed rapidly.

Agnes Tirop Road running’s most recent 10km world-record breaker allegedly slain by husband Agnes Tirop, who only one month before had set a world record for 10km in a womenonly road race, was found dead at her home in Iten, Kenya on 13 October, with a knife wound to her neck. Athletics Kenya said that she was allegedly killed by her husband.

fourth in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics on 2 August. She had started her career by becoming the second youngest ever winner of the World Cross-Country Championships back in 2015 at the age of 19. She went on to twice win bronze medals at 10,000m both in the World Championships of 2017 in London and 2019 in Doha.

On 12 September Tirop had run 30:01 for 10km on a road circuit in Germany. She broke the previous women-only record of 30:29 set by Asmae Leghzaoui (MAR) back in 2002. The 25-year old had finished

Tirop’s husband Ibrahim Rotich was arrested 800km away in Mombasa on 14 October while allegedly attempting to flee the country. Two other arrests were made and charges brought.

Dr Joan Ullyot Staunch advocate for women’s distance running instrumental in gaining IOC acceptance of a Women’s Olympic Marathon in 1984

Joan Ullyot (nee Lamb, 1 July 1940—18 June 2021) was an American physician, author, and runner. She was one of the key figures in successfully lobbying for a women’s marathon to be included in the Olympic Games. Ullyot herself won 10 marathons, including the masters’ category at the Boston Marathon

in 1984. She participated in all three of the Women’s International Marathon championships (1974, 1976 & 1979) held in Waldniel Germany, placing sixth in 1976.

She published Women’s Running in 1976, a book in which she rebutted traditional arguments that women were innately unsuited to distance running.

Until she reached 30 Ullyot showed no interest in distance running. Throughout her time as an undergraduate at Wellesley College – famous as the cheerleading highlight of the Boston Marathon course – and at Harvard Medical School, from which she graduated in 1966, she remained detached from the sport. Several decades later she simply said: “Girls didn’t run. I don’t know why, but they just didn’t.”.

Women’s distance running events were not included in the Olympic programme of the time. The 800m had been added in 1960 and the 1500m in 1972 but women could not contest longer distances. In 1977 the International Olympic Committee rejected a proposal to include a 3000m event for women into the programme of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Joan Lamb, as she was then, married Daniel Ullyot in 1965. The couple moved to California where Ullyot worked as an exercise physiologist and a project director at the Research Institute of Laboratory Medicine at the Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Meanwhile women were regularly competing in Marathons and elite performance levels were fast improving. Thrown onto on the back foot, in April 1980 the IOC program committee invited ‘further studies on the physiological and psychological effects of competitive marathon running on women’.

She started to run in 1970 – at first to keep fit. She only realised she had a talent for it after competing in the1971 Bay to Breakers race. Women were at last officially accepted by the Boston Marathon in 1972, and Ullyot ran the race 10 times over the coming years. Combining her new commitment to running with her professional interest in exercise physiology Ullyot was ideally placed as a serious commentator to campaign for full participation for women.

Ullyot made crucial contributions to the medical evidence submitted to the IOC in support of including a women’s Marathon in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Bowing to the weight of evidence the IOC approved the proposal in February 1981. In 1984 home favourite Joan Benoit won the inaugural women’s Olympic Marathon. Former world record holder (1975–79) Jacqueline Hansen commented: “we wouldn’t have had a Joan Benoit if we hadn’t had a Joan Ullyot.” Distance Running | 2022 Edition 1
