Running into history 40 years of AIMS
Keeping on track In the last edition of Distance Running (2022/2) a few of the race directors who came together to form AIMS in the early 1980s gave their recollections of how this came about. A significant proportion of the 28 founding members (see table) remain members today but keeping the race going through the intervening 40 years has often presented severe challenges. Below some of the races being held today trace their pathways from the early days up to the present time.
Barcelona Ramón Oliu became a runner when he was in the US in the 1970s and ran the breakthrough ‘Five Borough’ race in 1976 celebrating the American Bicentenary. On his return to Barcelona in 1977 he realised that there were practically no road races in Catalonia, or even in Spain.
After a decade of using the point-to-point Olympic course from 2001 the Barcelona Sports Council decided to return to running the race entirely within the City of Barcelona. Josep Antentas worked as race director. The name of Marathon Catalunya changed to Marató de Catalunya – Barcelona and finally took the current name of Marató de Barcelona.
From the 2006 edition the race was organised on a different basis. The number of participants had increased only very slowly since the 1980s and the objective was to attract far more runners, especially by promoting it as a major tourism event.
Barcelona authorities refused permission for the race to be held in the City, but a small town on the Costa Brava called Palafrugell was receptive to the idea. The first Marathon Catalunya was held in 1978 with 185 runners entering and 138 finishers. This was the first popular marathon in Spain, pre-dating the Madrid Marathon that same year and being held the following year with increased numbers (302 registered, 224 finished).
The partners in this new project were RPM Racing and ASO (the organisers of the Paris Marathon). A new course was designed entirely within the city and passing by the main monuments and avenues and the old town. The start and finish line in Montjuic was the same as for the first marathon held entirely within Barcelona. The new Barcelona Marathon began with 4636 runners and grew steadily to over 20,000 participants in 2017. During this period the race directors were Bep Solé (2006–2011), Cristian Llorens (2012–2021) and Mauro Llorens (current).
The third edition in 1980 was the first to be held in Barcelona itself but retained the name Marathon Catalunya. The start and finish were at Montjuïc, where the Olympic Marathon was to finish in the Olympic Stadium in 1992. The course ran through the industrial area and several outlying towns.
The Comissió Marathon Catalunya took an
Because of the impending 1992 Olympic Games Barcelona became a city of interest and participants came to run from all around the world. The race start moved to Mataró, where the Olympic Marathon was to start, and the finishing line was in the Olympic Stadium. Adolf Torruella and Domingo Catalan were the presidents of the Comissió Marathon Catalunya and race directors. (XIII Marathon Catalunya to XXIV Marathon). The World Congress of AIMS was held in Barcelona in 1996.
The name changes were symptomatic of the City asserting its grip on the right to hold races on the city streets within its jurisdiction and under what conditions those rights would be granted. This came to a head in 2005 with a big crisis between the original organisers and the Barcelona Sports Council which resulted in the cancellation of the 2005 edition of Barcelona Marathon. In response the traditional organisers put on a different event called the Marató del Mediterrani just outside Barcelona itself.
He contacted the city authorities and the athletics federation but never received any responses from them. So he put together an enthusiastic team, the “Comissió Marathon Catalunya” “dedicated to recreational long distance running” and with the aim of setting up a Marathon in Barcelona.
The running movement in Barcelona kept increasing in numbers and popularity. Some towns and running clubs began to organise their own road races (10km, 15km, and half marathons) and a regular calendar was established.
races within Catalunya. In the 1980s fields of more than 3000 participants were common.
For the 2019 race the marathon course was changed again and subsequently both male and female course records were broken. active role in promoting road racing both among citizens and with the city authorities. It published a specialised running magazine and oversaw the organisational quality of races. Raimon Vancells was the race director between 1984–1989. He headed an amateur organisation working to improve the marathon and road
The 2020 edition of the race was first postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and later cancelled. The 2021 race was run on 7 November and the 2022 race only six months later on 8 May. In 2023 it is expected that the race will return to the traditional date in mid-March (19 March 2023). Distance Running | 2022 Edition 3

Running into history 40 years of AIMS The Berlin Marathon start (since 2003)
1998 that there was a new record number of participants with 27,621 from 71 countries. The anniversary was crowned with Ronaldo da Costa’s world record of 2:06:05 The Berlin Marathon made major changes in 2003. It became a two-day event with all its supporting events, and the Marathon course was altered so that the start and finish were at the Brandenburg Gate with the last 1500m run on the spectacular boulevard Unter den Linden before passing through the Gate.
Berlin Horst Milde writes: The “40 Years of AIMS” story is the history of the development of the running movement worldwide, but one forgets when you were there from the beginning. It was very fortunate that at that time there were innovative and decisive colleagues who drove the development forward with vision. Berlin, the city, was traditionally a running powerhouse. At the SCC Berlin (Sport-Club Charlottenburg founded in 1902), there was already a large group of runners in the 1970s who participated in West Berlin. At that time I was chairman of the athletics section of the SCC and developed new running formats like the 1st Berlin cross-country in 1964, a “people’s march” over 20km and a “people’s hike” over 25km. What was new was that people who were not members of the club could pay a fee and participate. This was the background to the first “Berlin Volks Marathon” held on roads near the Grunewald forest on 13 October 1974 with 286 participants. Anyone could take part – there was no need to belong to a club as had previously been required. New running publications informed the public about marathons held abroad, with huge numbers of participants, that went through the very heart of the city. Berlin running tourists flew to the New York City Marathon in 1980 optimistically promoting the Berlin Marathon as passing through downtown Berlin (starting from 1981). In March 1981 I sent three “spies” to London to see how Chris Brasher and John Disley had organised the inaugural London Marathon. In 1979 they had themselves been on just such a mission to the New York City Marathon. The Berlin Marathon team in London delivered a report which allowed us to learn a lot from the London experience. But it took a lot more effort to convince the Berlin police to allow runners to use the streets. I invited Berlin’s Chief of Police to the Stockholm Marathon. Stockholm police colleagues were able to explain everything to him. They told him that everyone wants to be on duty because the marathon brings so much fun and joy for everyone. That same evening in the hotel in Stockholm, the Berlin police chief gave his permission for the Marathon to be run through the centre of Berlin on 27 September 1981. This was the breakthrough we needed.
In 1977 Christa Vahlensieck (GER) had run the first official world’s best time for women in Berlin with 2:34:48 on the occasion of the German Championships within the 4th Berlin Marathon. Berlin’s world record-breaking reputation began from there but started to take off after Ronaldo da Costa’s 1998 win. Tegla Loroupe (KEN) ran 2:20:43 in 1999 while in 2001 Naoko Takahashi (JPN) improved this time to 2:19:46 to become the first woman to run under 2:20.
That first city race attracted 3486 participants from 30 nations.
Two years later, in 2003, Paul Tergat (KEN) was the first man to run under 2:05 with a win in 2:04:55. Haile Gebrselassie (ETH) improved this time to 2:04:26 in 2007 – and one year later to 2:03:59. In 2011 Patrick Makau (KEN) set a new world record of 2:03:38 which lasted until he ran 2:03:23 in the 2013 race. One year later Dennis Kimetto (KEN) undercut the 2:03 mark with 2:02:57. The most recent highlight of Berlin as a world record race was provided by Eliud Kipchoge’s magnificent 2:01:39 on 16 September 2018.
AIMS was founded in 1982, as an association of race organisers, which addressed their main concerns such as accurate timing and measurement of the course.
The Berlin Marathon has become a sporting, sporting-political – and also economic power in Germany, which goes far beyond the winning times.
Fred Lebow, the New York City Marathon race director and mentor to many other races, ran the Berlin Marathon on 25 September 1983. He was in Berlin to attend the 3rd World Congress of AIMS held in connection with the Berlin Marathon under AIMS President Chris Brasher.
40 years of AIMS should be a time and reason to say thank you to all the men and women who, with their knowledge, skill and commitment, have developed the organisation to this level of importance.
London Marathon co-founder John Disley (in black) talks to New York Marathon race founder Fred Lebow at the Berlin Marathon expo 1983
Berlin was the largest German marathon and by 1985 could already boast 11,814 participants from 58 nations, and the course records regularly improved. Berlin had arrived among the big races of the world. On 9 November 1989 the Berlin Wall fell – a global sensation. On 1 January 1990, we organised the Berlin New Year’s Run starting in West Berlin and passing through the Brandenburg Gate, for the first time in almost 30 years, to East Berlin and then back to the West. The race attracted well over 20,000 runners from all over the world and worldwide TV coverage. The 17th Berlin Marathon on 30 September 1990 – three days before official German reunification – was similarly spectacular. With a cap of 25,000 participants from all over the world, Steve Moneghetti (AUS) triumphed in the fastest time of the year and Uta Pippig gave Germany a home win. But in 1991 there was a decline in participants: 18,909 registered from 61 nations, and this continued in 1992 until 1997. It was not until the 25th anniversary race on 20 September

Running into history 40 years of AIMS The first Chicago Marathon was run on 23 September 1905 but was discontinued during the difficult years of the early 1920s.
Finish of the 1978 Chicago Marathon
It was not until Frank Shorter’s triumph in the 1972 Olympic Games Marathon that the American public’s interest returned to the Marathon. It continued with the rivalry between Shorter and Bill Rodgers on the domestic scene. New York City capitalised on the popularity of the Marathon as a spectacle by establishing a city-wide event to celebrate the American Bicentennial in 1976 with the course passing through all five of the city’s Boroughs. The New York City Marathon grew rapidly in the late 1970s but even before the first race was run in Chicago the Parks’ Superintendent Ed Kelly refused permission for the Marathon to use the parks or the Lake Michigan waterfront. Lee Flaherty, the founder of the Marathon, managed to win the support of Mayor Richard Daley. Mayor Daley died but his successor Michael Bilandic approved the race and managed to win Kelly over. Bilandic was a runner and he and his wife handed out medals when the first edition, called the Mayor Daley Marathon, was run on 25 September 1977. The race had no sponsors and Flaherty had to put up his own money for it to go ahead. Although the race attracted 4200 entries and had 2128 finishers the second edition went ahead again only thanks to the race founder’s deep pockets. Beatrice Foods became the Marathon’s first sponsor in 1979 but it wasn’t until the 1982 race that there was enough prize money to attract elite runners. That year Greg Meyer set a benchmark course record of 2:10:59. Chicago was one of the first races to pay appearance money to elite athletes and this quickly generated quality fields in both men’s and women’s divisions. Many of the top finishers in the 1983 World Championships and 1984 Olympic Games went on to compete in “America’s Marathon Chicago” as it was known in the mid-1980s. The 1984 Olympic women’s Marathon winner Joan Benoit described Chicago around this time as “The World’s Marathon”.
Chicago the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. This turned out to be a momentous change. Major Events Inc had bought the rights to the race from Lee Flaherty in 1993 but in 1996 LaSalle Bank bought the race from Major Events to effectively bring it ‘in house’. In 2007, after 10 years with a steady sponsorship arrangement, the Bank of America took over LaSalle Bank’s parent company ABN AMRO and the race took the name by which it is still known: the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Khalid Khannouchi set a world record of 2:05:42 in the 1999 race, and when Catherine Ndereba broke the women’s world record with 2:18:47 in the 2001 Chicago Marathon both men’s and women’s then current world records had been set at Chicago. The race grew rapidly in the period following its acquisition by LaSalle Bank. The year before
In 1984 Beatrice raised the prize money to more than New York offered and a sharp rivalry ensued. In 1985 Steve Jones broke his own course record (which at the time he set it was the world record). He ran just two seconds short of the world record and Joan Benoit Samuelson, the 1984 Olympic Champion, set a course record that stood for nearly a generation. At that time Chicago was rated as the most competitive marathon in the United States and perhaps in the world. In 1986 the race had world-class runners among the 8000 participants but the winning times were significantly slower. Beatrice Foods dropped out as a sponsor in 1987 and only a half-marathon race was held that year. The marathon was moved to the spring of 1988 and attracted Heileman Brewing Company as a new sponsor of what was now called the Old Style Chicago Marathon. This lasted until 1991 after which diminished prize money led to slower winning times. In 1992 the race was again without a title sponsor but in 1994 it became

(1995) 9000 people registered but by 1999 there were over 29,000 entries. A cap of 37,500 was imposed in 2001 after the 2000 edition attracted 33,171 registrations. From 2003–2006 there was a cap of 40,000 entries which was reached before the entry deadline. When the New York City Marathon was cancelled in 2012 Chicago was the world’s biggest (based on finisher numbers) with 37,437 finishers. Since then it has been among the three or four races in the world with more than 40,000 participants. Apart from coming under the Bank of America flag the 2007 race was a landmark event for another reason: the excessive heat experienced on race day when temperatures hit 31ºC and the course had to be closed after only three and a half hours. Nearly 11,000 runners failed to finish. In common with many other races throughout the world the 2020 edition of the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. There were over 26,000 finishers in the comeback race in 2021.

Looking ahead | 8 October 2022 ASML Marathon Eindhoven, Netherlands Running a fast course in a city of the future
Creating connections through technology The 38th edition of Marathon Eindhoven – the largest two-day sports event in North-Brabant – will be held on 8-9 October 2022. Eindhoven is known as the Brainport of the Netherlands. The government, knowledge institutions and businesses all collaborate to improve life in the city. Eindhoven is famous for new ideas, infrastructure, ICT and design. Suiting this creative city, the Marathon Eindhoven is a sports event showcasing innovation. The first edition was held in 1959 with a total of only 60 participants – all of them men. It was not then accepted for women to compete in long distance races. This has completely
changed. ASML Marathon Eindhoven has become an event that welcomes everyone. People of all ages and identities nowadays experience the supportive atmosphere of the event. Supporters cheer you on and there are signs on both sides of the road with kind words encouraging everyone to keep going. Over the years the event has also put an emphasis on becoming more sustainable and protecting the environment. This objective is implemented in the programme as the Renewi Plogging Run in which participants clean the streets of litter while running. The marathon is known for its fast and attractive course. It has led to many fast finish times and
a very good experience for running enthusiasts. While running the course you can see landmarks like the Markt, Catharinaplein, Stratumseind and Geldropseweg. In the supporting events on Saturday you run over Strijp-S, Strijp-T and Strijp R in the former Philips industrial park. Since 2000 creative companies and housing have been established in the former industrial buildings. Envision yourself running through vibrant and busy streets, with nature’s beauty and modern infrastructure. Last year over 18,000 runners crossed the finish line at the famous Vestdijk in the centre of the city. Joyful supporters gave running participants all the energy they needed to complete the final metres of the challenging course. Something for which the event stands out are the different music venues of the Marathon Festival, which make an important contribution to the atmosphere in the city. The combination of the energetic local ambience of Brabant and the international allure give the event a unique appeal.

Looking ahead | 8 October 2022 Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Marathon, Romania The capital of Romania is one of the most surprising cities in Central and Eastern Europe. Runners eager to discover new destinations will delight in the chance to uncover its hidden charms. More than a bridge between East and West, Bucharest is a unique city with top-quality museums, intricately carved churches and neoclassical palaces. Through its geographical position Bucharest emerged as the region’s largest city. Although different cultures and civilizations passed over its territory the city built its own unique identity. The culture is a mix between a local outlook and influences to which Romanians felt close, especially French influences. This is reflected in the nicknames by which the city is sometimes known: “Little Paris” or “Paris of the East”.
Surprise yourself Run with your heart in the City of Joy
For more than 50 years after World War II the entire country became a prisoner of communism and was subjected to massive transformations. Earthquakes, fire and the two World Wars have destroyed a large part of the city’s heritage. Few of the city’s constructions are over 200 years old but as a result Bucharest is a young, fast-developing and dynamic city. The City’s name originates from a shepherd, who was the first person to establish himself in the area, named Bucur – literarily meaning “joy”. Just like a youngster present-day Bucharest is a city full of energy, a city that knows how to live, a city that rediscovers itself every day – a city of joy! Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Marathon starts and finishes in front of the Parliament Palace. Construction of the building started in 1980, during a period of economic hardship, using only materials of Romanian origin. It covers an area of 365,000 square metres and is the world’s largest administrative building (for civil use), the heaviest and most expensive building in the world and the third largest in volume. The course passes through the very heart of the city and past Bucharest’s major landmarks: the Triumphal Arch, National History Museum, CEC Palace, Military Palace, Enescu Museum, National Museum of Art, the Romanian Athenaeum; and through large parks and along green boulevards. In the oldest part of the city lie the remains of a fortress where Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Dracula) lived in the 15th century. Through these sights you feel the power of a vibrant and eclectic city and enjoy a once in a lifetime running experience. The event incorporates the Romanian National Marathon Championships. The first edition back in 2008 attracted 800 runners from 10 countries; the 2019 edition hosted over 19,000 runners from more than 85 countries. The race has enjoyed one of the highest year-by-year increases in participation anywhere in Europe. Apart from the Marathon and children’s races, 10km, Half Marathon and Relay (teams of 4) races are available. The Kids Races are Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Marathon’s proudest achievement. They had around 8500 participants in 2019, and are one of the biggest non-competitive running events for children throughout Europe. Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Marathon is the largest mass sports event in Romania. It supports over 30 social causes. Awareness of the event is used to create a beneficial social and economic impact on the local community. Apart from sightseeing the flat and fast course offers runners a good chance to achieve new personal best times. Come, see, discover the city of Bucharest and celebrate Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Marathon’s 15th Anniversary. ■ www.bucharest-marathon.com Distance Running | 2022 Edition 3

Magic in the air Cry tears of joy in fascinating Venice
It is said that the Marathon is run for 30km with the legs, 10km with the head, 2km with the heart and 195 metres with tears in the eyes. In Venice the tears are of true joy. Every runner, at least once in their lifetime, should experience the magic of running the Venicemarathon, where fatigue dissolves in the face of the eternal beauty of this city that lies on water and where time seems to have stopped. The Venicemarathon is one of the most fascinating marathons in the world. Every kilometre is rich in art, history and culture making it an incomparable experience. The race starts from in front the of Villa Pisani in Stresa, a mansion that over the centuries has hosted doges, kings and emperors. On the occasion of the marathon it opens its gates to accommodate the runners up until the moment they enter the starting corrals.
surface evokes the sensation of running on water. Runners make their entrance into St. Mark’s Square by passing between the columns of Saints Mark and Tòdaro, crossing what was once the monumental gateway to the Serenissima. The ‘lap of honor’, in the shadow of the Campanile and St. Mark’s Basilica, is one of the most anticipated moments of the marathon. The athletes then return to the basin along the Doge’s Palace and cross the Ponte della Paglia from which they can admire the Bridge of Sighs. The course continues along the Riva degli Schiavoni, skirting the San Marco basin, and reaches the finish line in Riva Sette Martiri. The “Giardini della Biennale” is nearby, which hosts the various pavilions of the biennial exhibition
The first part of the route runs along the Riviera del Brenta with its eighteenth-century villas built by Venetian nobles. Runners then pass through Marghera and continue to the centre of Mestre. The race gives exclusive passage within the brand-new multimedia museum and then runs for over 2km through San Giuliano Park. The Park overlooks the lagoon and leads on to Venice via the Ponte della Libertà. The athletes run along the panoramic Fondamenta delle Zattere, admiring Giudecca Island and skimming the majestic Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute up to the Punta della Dogana. Looking ahead | 13 November 2022 Taiwan’s Rice Heaven Tianzhong Marathon, Chinese Taipei
Experience the fragrance of paddy fields in ‘rice heaven’
Our hometown marathon Running in a marathon elsewhere the race may be for the runners but in Tianzhong it is an event for our whole township. It is the most hospitable marathon in Taiwan, with the most typical Taiwanese village characteristics – a marathon in Rice Heaven. The township motivates 6000 villagers to demonstrate the friendliness and enthusiasm of Tianzhong, all helping to cheer the runners along the way. We invite runners from all across the country to support Taiwan’s smart farming with their legs. With each step they will experience the fragrance of paddy fields and rice, and our hometown compassion. Tianzhong townships’ volunteers use their absolute joy in cherishing the land to create a friendly, enthusiastic race. This is what makes Taiwan’s Rice Heaven Tianzhong Marathon world-renowned and beloved by local and over-
seas runners. It is rated as one of the top three classic races in Taiwan. The Tianzhong Marathon won first prize at the Taiwan Brand International and became “the” marathon event in Taiwan for both local and overseas runners.
In this year’s event there are 42k, 21k, and 10k categories. In response to the Covid epidemic an online version of the race will be available so that those who cannot be with us can still participate.
The Tianzhong Marathon made something out of nothing. We started with 100 volunteers and today 6000 villagers are contributing their efforts. The first race had around 4000 runners but the 15,000 registrations now available are snapped up within seconds.
Runners can find souvenirs of the event from among Tianzhong’s local specialties. The medals and trophies are designed in the shape of rice grains, demonstrating the characteristics of Taiwan Rice Tianzhong and Golden Rice Waves.
This has brought about local business opportunities and an upsurge of youth returning to their hometown. Tourism trends such as bicycle mini-tours, farming experiences, group sports training, and international experience tours were developed. This led to the people of Tianzhong finding confidence and pride. Tianzhong, once just a small town, has now turned into the hometown of thousands of runners every year.
Sustainability is very important in Tianzhong and in the light of this all clothing is made with S.Café® technology. This is an environmentally friendly material, using the remains of coffee grounds as the raw material of the yarn, and is created through a patented process of low temperature and high pressure. Road running is not limited to the Tianzhong Marathon in November. Come to visit or walk in Tianzhong on any day of the year. In 2018 Tianzhong HSR Sports Hot-zone was established to help runners in their preparation and wellbeing (join on Facebook – Tianzhong HSR Sports Hot-zone). Every week of every season before the Tianzhong Marathon different running and training classes are offered, inviting fellow runners from everywhere to run together. There are some other competitions and classes that are available throughout the year including the Tianzhong Night-run, the Road-Run Instructional Class, the Love to Run Class, a Sports seminar series. the Official Marathon Training Camp, the Family run summer camp and the Family mini-marathon. ■ www.tianzhongmarathon.com Distance Running | 2022 Edition 3

Looking ahead | 13 November 2022 Monterey Bay Half Marathon, USA Gentle hills and scenic views
California coastal The Monterey Bay Half Marathon returns on 13 November after three years away due to the pandemic. Excitement is building with strong early registration numbers. The race was created in 2003 by the same nonprofit organization that owns and operates the Big Sur International Marathon on the central coast of California. The new race was half the distance, in the fall instead of the spring, and featured a different course and experience through downtown Monterey and alongside the beautiful Monterey Bay. The race was cancelled in 2018 only one day before due to poor air quality from a massive wildfire more than 250km away. With cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, this year will be the 17th event. The course features gentle hills and scenic views of Monterey Bay, Cannery Row, Asilomar State Beach and quick tours of parts of the downtown areas of Monterey Bay and Pacific Grove. It is
the only race to go through a road tunnel in downtown Monterey near Fisherman’s Wharf. On race day the lights in the tunnel are dimmer and a DJ blasts techno music and laser lights to help get the runners moving and grooving. Eight to 10 other bands are featured along the course, about half of which is out-and-back to allow runners to see their friends and competitors. The race was popular right from the start and reached sell-out attendance of 9000 runners by year 10, reflecting the strong growth of half marathons in the US in the mid-to-late 2000s. With accompanying 5km and 3km races the day before the event continues to attract more than 10,000 total entrants, which fills all the space available at the start, on the course, and in the finish village. The Big Sur Marathon Foundation Board decided to redirect all prize money from the namesake race to the half marathon when it was started. As a result the half continues to draw elite runners. The current course records of 1:02 for men and 1:08 for women indicate the
potential for fast times. In 2016 the race began the “Equalizer Challenge” bonus pool. In this program, the elite women begin the race 9:05 in front of the elite men. The top three athletes of either gender to reach the finish line receive additional bonuses of USD 3,000, USD 1,500 and USD 500 on top of the eight-deep purse for each gender. This means the first person across the line receives USD 7,000. To date the elite men have caught the elite women in two of the three challenge races. With its scenic course and quality organization the race attracts outstanding age group runners from throughout the San Francisco Bay area and northern California. Runners come from all 50 US states and more than two dozen countries. Many combine the race with a visit to other local attractions featured on the course including the famous Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. More than 1400 volunteers are recruited from 80 local non-profit organizations to support the race. The Big Sur Marathon Foundation regularly returns more than USD 125,000 from race proceeds back into the local community and for youth fitness programs. ■ www.montereybayhalfmarathon.org Distance Running | 2022 Edition 3

Looking ahead | 27 November 2022 Ring Running Series, Germany
Running rings Run on a track designed for motor racing It is one of the world’s most famous places for motorsports: the Hockenheimring in Germany. The circuit was built in 1932 as a race course for motorsports and became one of the world’s most famous and popular race courses for motorcycling, GT sport – and Formula 1. It is also a venue for big concerts featuring international superstars. Given its 120.000 spectator capacity a thrilling atmosphere is guaranteed. Several motorsports speed records have been set at the Hockenheimring and the course is ideal for running too. The race organisers proposed the idea of a marathon and half marathon race at this fantastic venue and celebrated their first edition on 17 October 2021. The motorsport course is truly special as a race course for runners. You can feel the adrenaline when passing all the famous Formula 1 landmarks: the “Parabolika”, the “Bernie-Ecclestonecurve”, the hairpin or the Motodrome, and you
can fill up with energy at the aid station in the pit lane. An emotional finish is guaranteed. As you cross the original Grand-Prix-finish line you will be celebrated with the waving of the chequered flag. The flat 4.4 km lap on the Hockenheimring is officially measured and ideal for fast race times – not only for motorsports. In 2021 more than 1100 runners ran the first edition of the Ring Running Series and the organisers welcomed many overjoyed athletes at the finish line celebrating new personal best times. Sabrina Mockenhaupt, one of Germany’s most successful top runners and a multiple national and international championship medal winner, ran the second edition in March 2022 at the half marathon distance and was surprised by her fast time when she crossed the finish line as the female winner. Besides the fast course and the historic venue having a special atmosphere spectators also get a great chance to follow the race. Supporters can cheer on you several times along the course – either by having a seat in the big grandstand at the Motodrome or directly along the course. Located just one hour away from Frankfurt and Stuttgart airports the Hockenheimring also offers perfect logistics for runners and spectators. It’s not only the ideal geographical position of the venue but also being able to park so close to the finish line, an integrated hotel giving a direct view of the course and the finish line, and entertainment along the whole length of the course. Spectators and runners can also combine their race participation with a Hockenheimring sightseeing tour or enjoy an e-cart tour at the venue.
The next Ring Running Series edition is scheduled for 27 November 2022, where you can sign up either for the marathon or half marathon distance. Being on a lap course you will never run alone and can always be cheered on and motivated, either by spectators or other runners. Yet the course will never be too crowded and you can focus on your race from the start until reaching the legendary finish line, where you will be presented with your well-deserved medal. The sight of the women runners filling the wide city streets in the Nagoya Women’s Marathon on 13 March impressed both local and global audiences with a comeback of one of the largest women’s sports festivals. The runners’ strength, perseverance, smiles and even tears provided a reminder of the power of sport and the hope it inspires. The Marathon took place against a background of races being cancelled elsewhere in Japan. The Lake Saroma Ultramarathon, usually held in late June, was called off on 29 March – two weeks after Nagoya had been held without generating any infections. Already the largest women’s marathon in the world this year Nagoya also became the highestpaying Marathon in the world with its increased first-place prize of USD 250,000 (EUR 237,000). That the largest prize in marathon running
would be given to a woman rather than a man gathered worldwide attention. The proud winner was Ruth Chepngetich, who dominated the competition to win in the time of 2:17:18 – the sixth-fastest ever run and the second-fastest in the women-only marathon category. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic Nagoya has managed to put on the event each year while still placing top priority on safety and security. In 2020 precautions and regulations in place only allowed for an elite race with 110 participants while 4704 ‘domestic’ (Japan-based) runners were able to participate in 2021. For Volunteers • Face masks, face shields, and portable alcohol disinfectant were provided for all volunteers, as well as additional equipment depending on where they were assigned. At the Marathon Expo • Booth setting, flow design, and entry restriction were implemented to avoid the ‘Three Cs’: The ‘Three Cs’ are the high-risk situations of COVID-19 transmission defined by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan: • Crowded places with poor ventilation • Close-contact settings • Confined spaces. • All visitors were required to provide their names, addresses, and contact information via an admission form at the entrance (for contact tracing).

The Omicron variant of coronavirus arrived relatively late in Japan but from January 2022 it caused a rapid increase in infections. As the number of new cases rose quickly to a record high level the government brought restrictions into force and called for citizens’ cooperation to contain the virus. Although the outbreak peaked in February and then slowly began to decline the number of cases remained high. Even in early March, when the race was scheduled, there were a lot of uncertainties as to whether it could go ahead as planned. In general people in Japan are very cautious about the risk of infection and many mass event organisers, including those of marathon races, had been forced to cancel or reduce the size of their events. To hold a mass participation race safely under such circumstances the organisers of the Nagoya Women’s Marathon took all possible measures against the spread of infection. The Covid-19 Control Office was again established within the Organising Committee with medical professionals, local authorities, and the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. Their job was to formulate and implement the infection control plan. A key part of this was a new measure for 2022: setting
Covid precautions up free PCR testing stations at the event sites and requiring all runners to present a negative result before the race start. For non-Japanese nationals the Government had continued its policy of suspending new arrivals into Japan but a small number of foreign-based elite athletes were able to join the race. Exceptions were made for some elite runners with the requirement that they would be quarantined for a week at a special facility under the organiser’s responsibility. No non-elite runners living outside Japan were allowed to
enter the country so could not participate in the race in Nagoya. The original field of 22,000 was reduced to 8698. For those who were unable to run the in-person race, the Nagoya Women’s Online Marathon 2022 was held as an alternative, available through a running app. All finishers, including those of the virtual
race, received the finisher prizes including the event’s exclusive Tiffany & Co. pendant and New Balance T-shirt. ■ womens-marathon.nagoya Next event: Sun 12 March 2023

Running news
What is A ‘National Running Day’ was started in the United States in 2009 but the idea soon jumped national boundaries.
Thousands take part in events worldwide
On 1 June 2016 New York Road Runners launched ‘Global Running Day’ with more than 2.5 million people from 177 countries pledging to run more than nine million miles. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the 1 June date to be Global Running Day in the City of New York. 2014 Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi led a group run from the Boston Run Base and the Atlanta Track Club organized a “run around the clock” event, where at least one person from the Atlanta metro area would be running every hour of Global Running Day. In 2017 Global Running Day attracted the support of international organisations like AIMS and World Athletics (then IAAF). National federations and, more significantly, the organisers of distance races all over the world started to offer events on the day specifically aiming to attract new runners. Running clubs and stores started to get involved but at the heart of the project was the idea of individuals making a pledge to run a certain distance in a place of their choosing. The Million Kid Run started as part of the first (2016) edition of Global Running Day. The objective that year was to get more than a million kids from around the world to participate,

whether in formally organised or impromptu events. The focus was on making fitness fun, and inspiring kids to embrace running as a way to remain healthy. 672,030 youths took part in 2016. More than 100 organisations support Global Running Day and the Million Kid Run including some of the World’s largest races right down to
the smallest of local running groups In 2020 and 2021 Global Running Day, in common with most races at the time, became a ‘virtual’ event due to the Covid pandemic and the fear of infection at live events. The transition was seamless for events like the Million Kid Run which were set up in the same way: to ask people to pledge to run a named distance at

Running news any time on Global Running Day in a location of their choice. This year the live venues returned. Runners were motivated to visit the Global Running Day website (www.globalrunningday.org) and take the Pledge. That could mean being part of a virtual race or selecting a live event from one of many different locations listed. In New York itself, the birthplace of the movement, Global Running Day kicked off with an ‘Open Run’. Open Runs are free, community-led fun runs and walks, For Global Running Day a special one was held in Morningside Park for people of all ages and abilities. Since Open Run launched in 2015 there have been more than 18,000 participants city-wide. In the afternoon nearly 1000 kids from the Rising New York Road Runners program across the five boroughs came to Icahn Stadium for fun running and fitness activities. In Valencia, aka the ‘City of Running’, Global Running Day celebrated the passion for running by bringing people together on the first such occasion since the pandemic. Close to 500 people went out to run together in the Turia river-bed gardens that run through the centre of the city. This contributed to the greatest number of daily users of the 5km training circuit in 2022, with more than 3100.
Valencia
In Athens ‘the birthplace of the Marathon’, the Minister of Sports Mr. Lefteris Avgenakis ran with the team of Greece’s leading marathon runner Maria Polyzou. The event took place at the Olympic Stadium and the General Manager of OAKA (the Olympic Complex) Mr. Konstantinos Halioris also participated. All the runners who took part were raising food relief for the people of Ukraine. Maybe you missed it this time around – if so be sure to put the date in your diary for next year: 1 June 2023. ■ www.globalrunningday.org
