Editor’s Letter
It is a new year for District. We could not be more thrilled to showcase something a little more sophisticated, and definitely chicer this month. Our theme is all about putting a spin on the classics, whether that be new years resolutions or recipes to get rid of those extra holiday pounds, or how to take classic pieces in your wardrobe and make them seem like new. January is a hard month to generate content for, but I think our contributors and editors did a wonderful job. We have an amazing fashion piece this month and a guide to having your own, perfect, grown-up tea party. Then there is our fab cover girl Julia, better known as Society Grl. She is an inspiration to college girls everywhere. What started as an anonymous Twitter account has become a hugely successful blog. You can see her full story on page 26. Most of our contributors are headed back to the spring semester of college, for me it is my second and I am sure we will all do amazingly well. I hope your holidays were extremely special and that you have a wonderful new year. As always, remember to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and that District is “your right to a beautiful life.”
Keep It Beautiful,

When I think of a classic outfit the first thing that comes to mind is a LBD (little black dress). For many years LBDs have been the most classic outfit choice for women. The beauty of a black dress is usually seen in the classiest of occasions including dinner, theatre and date nights. Add a twist to your black dress and wear it during the day while doing errands. My take on the little black dress is that you can spice it up or dress it down. To make the little black dress more casual I chose a pair of funky leopard print tights and boots. Perfect for running around town doing errands and getting some shopping done. I decided to add some twist to a casual black dress by adding red lips and a statement necklace. Perfection!

New makeup for a new year. by, Sonia of Sisterhood Redefined
As a society full of busy women, our lives only get busier after the first of the year. From running errands to work to school to social events, finding and maintaining a morning prep routine is no easy feat. This year, why not take a leaf from the book of ladies that choose to have au natural makeup. I’m certainly not one to say let’s throw out all the makeup from our cabinets, but a natural looking makeup regimen not only saves time early in the day but also when you are getting ready to go to dinner with friends or family. The most important step in any routine is to wash and moisturize - before you go to bed and before you put on any makeup. Use a tinted moisturizer to stand in as foundation but make sure it has SPF. Second, a swipe of concealer under the eyes and on any par22
ticularly bad pimples will even your skin tone and eliminate heavy makeup use. If needed, a puff of powder will take the shine out of your nose. Apply a warm colored blush to define your cheeks and your base is done. The next step to conquer is the eyes. Using a brush, dust your eyelids with a low shimmer nude eye shadow that is a shade slightly darker than your skin. Define and brighten your eyes with a lighter shadow along the brow bone and dotted in the inner corner of the eye. Find brown or charcoal eyeliner and line your eyes. Throw on some mascara to finish. For a more casual look skip the eye shadow and liner and just apply mascara – never forget the mascara. Last, tint your lips with a lip color as close to your natural shade as you want – even opt for a tinted chap stick. Here it is also important to remember SPF. Now, you are ready to take on the world and 2015!

What is Society Grl all about?
Are you working on any exciting projects?
Society Grl is all about my journey. It reflects me and what I stand for. As much as SG is my doorway to future opportunities, I want her to inspire women to work hard and preserve.
My biggest project is graduating UW, but yes, I am. They will take a few months to a year to execute, but they will be big.
How did you get started blogging? My blogging happened by accident in the late summer of 2013. I blogged here and there but never really took it seriously until last year.
Why did you start your anonymous Twitter account? The twitter account was started in September 2012. I was at work one day and decided that I’m going to post my ramblings anonymously!
How long did it take for your blog to take off? Define “take off”? I still sometimes think I haven’t done anything! But since I already had a foundation on Twitter/Insta it was just about getting the readers onto the site
What is your favorite thing about January? My birthday! I’m BIG on birthdays. Plus, I’m turning 21! 26
What do you want to do in the future with your blog/brand? I hope that my brand will give me opportunities to do what I love and to make enough money to live comfortably. However, my blog is not my destination, it’s a stepping-stone.
What are you most excited for in January? Well, I’m finally going to Vegas for my 21st so that should be exciting! I’ve been dying to go to the Chanel boutique there.
Do you have anything specific you want for your birthday? A Chanel black, medium boy bag with silver hardware. : )
Do you have any new years resolutions you would like to share with us? I actually hate new year’s resolutions. I believe that change needs to come from the heart on any given day, not January 1st.

Where in the world would you love to do a photoshoot? Where ever Taylor Swift shot her Blank Space video. Of course gowns and designer shoes are a must.
What are some of your favorite fashion brands?
My favorite fashion brands are Dior, Erdem, and always Chanel. I love them for the dream they sell.
What do you think is the most classic fashion piece, out of everything in the world? So clichÊ, but a little black dress. I don’t know how many black dresses I own, but I use them constantly. I also believe that a great grey or black wool coat is a life savor in the winter. There are so many looks that can be intermixed with it.
If you were to suggest five classic pieces every girl needs in her wardrobe, what would they be & why? For the winter: 1. Comfortable, chic denim jeans 2. An oversized knit sweater 3. A monotone coat {lower than the hips} 4. A black, comfy bootie that hits above the ankle 31 5. A black dress

Will you be attending fashion week this spring? If so, what shows are you most excited for?
Julia’s Mind
Of course :) Honestly, I love every show, but the shows that I’ve loved has been Lacoste and BCBG. Oh, and Christian Siriano.
Instagram or Twitter?
What trend, if any, are you dying to try this spring?
Favorite thing to bake?
SNEAKERS! I have been obsessing over them. I can’t wait until it’s warm enough so I can wear them without being chilly!
Do you have any travel plans coming up, if so where? I do, but only if I get my citizenship in time! I’m stuck without a passport.
Fall or summer? I collect... Favorite City? Bloom of choice? Style icon? I want...
Twitter I don’t bake... or cook. Fall Starbucks cups! NYC White roses Blake Lively, Poppy Delevinge success.
Do you have any advice for our college girls out there?
Most prized possession?
The world may tell you that you’re not going to succeed, but if you work hard and challenge yourself, everything will fall into place.
Favorite accessory? Any big scarf Nail polish color?
I never know the color, but it’s a deep burgundy red.

5 Ways to Keep Your Relationship by, Tiffany of Fresh in the New Year Endless Bliss The start of a new year is the perfect time for new beginnings in all parts of your life – your health and diet, your organization skills and time management, and even your relationships, both romantic and platonic. Whether your relationship is brand new or you’ve been going strong for a long time, there are plenty of ways for you to keep your relationship feeling brand new in 2015.

Go on dates
When you have the convenience of seeing your significant other regularly, it’s easy to fall into a routine of just hanging out at each other’s place or staying at home if you live together. Spice it up a little by dating each other. Make it a priority to get out of the house and do something fun together at least once a week. It can be as simple as grabbing a bite to eat together during happy or seeing a movie or something out of the ordinary like visiting an art gallery or local museum or attending a wine or beer tasting. Whatever it is, just get out of the house and spend time together doing something that’s not part of your regular routine.

Write each other love notes
N2
We all love receiving letters in the mail, but why wait for a birthday or holiday ? Travel back in time to when you passed notes to each other in class. Exchange love notes every once in awhile and swoon over each other’s sweet words. Even if you don’t want to write a full letter, a small Post-It note donning loving words hidden among your significant others’ things will be sure to make them smile.
o
Keep a daily journal
N3
Write down something about your significant other every day. Jot down reasons you love them or moments they made you smile. Recount what you did together on particular days. Fill an enitre journal & present it as a gift, or pass it between the two of you.
It’s near impossible to never get upset with your significant other. In the times that you are upset with them, think about what you’re really upset about. Are you actually upset with something they did, or has it just been a bad day? Take a deep breath, and ask yourself whether or not it worth staying upset with them. If the answer is no, then just let it go. Why waste your time together fighting when you could be spending that time loving each other? 36

Do something significant for him/her every day
At the beginning of each day, decide on one significant thing that you’re going to do for your significant other that you don’t normally do, such as surprising them with their favorite Starbucks drink, having dinner ready before they get home, going for a walk together after work, hand-in-hand, or making sure the last thing you say to each other is “I love you.” Just make it special.

This Is Not What Feminism Looks Like As if feminism itself is not already (somehow) a controversial issue, creating “This is What a Feminist Looks Like” tshirts using (predominantly female) sweatshop labor and distributing to male icons like Joseph Gordon-Levitt (my personal celebrity crush), Tom Hiddleston, and Benedict Cumberbatch, was not exactly a foot in the right direction. Feminism, quite simply, is the “radical” view that women and men should have equality--no double standards in societal perspectives, no glass ceiling, no objectification and commercialization--the list goes on. In the United States (and in most of the world), it is not difficult to see the malecentric perspective that dominates and governs society, politics, the judicial system, and the workplace (P.S. Sweden has dramatically benefited from seeing things from a more gender-balanced perspective regarding government policies and regulations on issues such as prostitution). From receiving a smaller paycheck for the same career (devaluing the potential or work of a woman) to the widespread lack of justice for rape victims and victim-blaming, the existing system in most of the rest of the world lays testament to the strong need of a feminist movement--one which both men and women need to be a part of in order to succeed. Enter the “This is What A Feminist Looks Like” shirts that you might have seen on the chests of some of the most in-demand men in Hollywood to raise awareness for this movement (in the guise of consumerism, of course, but we can save capitalist holidays/agendas for another time ;) ). In theory, the idea of getting influential men to spread the word about, and trying to normalize, feminism, sounds like a decent way to attract more men to join the cause (which unfortunately is not the 38
The Feminist Shirt Controversy
easiest task to do). Not to mention that these roughly $70-$80 t-shirts are also raising money for charity. Sounds like a potentially alright plan? Well, except for the teensy little part about the whole “these-shirts-were-made-in-a-sweatshop” thing. Which, I suppose, is slightly important and relevant to the discussion of feminism, given that most garment workers are marginalized women trying their best to make ends meet for their families, and are already taken heavily advantage of. It’s amazing how easy it is, as consumers, to not think twice about where our products come from. Scratch that. It’s incredibly frightening. The conditions in sweatshops are fairly widely known if you just do a simple google search, so it would not be necessary to again go through what these horrid conditions would entail here, but rather to understand the difficulty in reconciling the production of “feminist” shirts by exploited women. While Fawcett claims to have launched an investigation into the suspicions on unethical practices which has concluded that such assertions are not accurate, (because a brand would definitely want to admit to hypocrisy, right?) the Daily Mail seems to have reached a different conclusion: women in their factories are being treated in a way counter-productive to the clothing’s suggested message. Earning less than the minimum wage is not only violating the basic human rights of these women, but it also directly contradicts the goals and purposes of feminism as a means of empowering and encouraging women. And this raises important questions for the feminist movement rooted in such consumer-based societies: Does feminism, as a movement, only extend to white, American women? As a feminist, is it not your responsibility to take into consideration the message your money is sending to fashion companies’ mass exploitation of marginalized women around the world?
New Year, New You New Year’s Resolutions
By, Melissa of Label Twenty Nine
Now that 2015 is here, I feel motivated to make those life changing resolutions I set my sights on last year. However, starting off year after year with resolutions that I soon forgot after a month or two, I started thinking of what goals are important to me and why they are important. After some time and much consideration, I have broken my New Year’s Resolutions down to the categories that are much more important to me. No, losing thirty pounds this year is not on the list but taking steps to getting healthy is! HEALTH // Almost everyone I know will start the year off following a diet of some sort of another. For some reason, the beginning of the year feels like a more powerful start than beginning at the middle or end of a month. Instead of losing weight, my goal is to be kind to my body. I want to wean myself off of processed food, lose myself a little more, and really start making changes that count. RELATIONSHIPS // For 2015, I want to build the relationship I have with my friends, family, and fiancee. This means really trying to make quality time for others. There are relatives I haven’t contacted in forever, bloggers who I really want to befriend, and bad com-
munication habits I want to rehabilitate. As I get older, the opportunity to make easy friends is not as easily accessible as it was before. I want to work on keeping the relationships that I have had success with this far. But, most importantly, I want to continue working on a positive relationship with myself. PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE // Another important aspect of life for me is my future. I want to spend time thinking about what I want out of life and how I plan to get there. Twenty-three seems like a young age to start thinking about these things but I am getting married in a little over a year and want to start a family as soon as I can after marriage. For me, that means getting my finances under control and really thinking about taking care of my body and soul, which just leads me back to my first resolution. 2015 is a new year, full of opportunities, discoveries, successes, and even failures. Regardless, I want to use my newly gained motivation to slowly start making steps towards a positive life full of laughter, experiences, and success. Happy New Year! 39
Old Fashioned with a Twist
By, Alayna of The Girl Who Does Everything
Our take on the classic tea party.
When I was little, I always pretended to have tea parties. I would get a new tea set for Christmas every year. I would dress up and set the table with everything I needed to have the perfect little tea party. Now that I’m older (and I actually drink tea) I am looking forward to having a grown up tea party with a few of my girlfriends. And since January is National Hot Tea Month, what better time of year is there to have one? Follow this guide to creating a lovely little get together for you and your group of girls. If I ever need inspiration for anything I usually just browse Pinterest. I always find so many ideas for things from decoration ideas to themes, to recipes, to outfit ideas. I also use Polyvore to create my own ideas and color schemes too and upload them to Pinterest to share to one of my boards. When planning your spectacular tea party you will want to start thinking about the theme and color scheme. Then, you will want to select the dishes and silverware along with the decoration and make sure they all coordinate and fit the color scheme. You will want to create a menu along with tea selections. And then, of course, you will want to decide on what you will wear to this sophisticated affair. You will want the perfect outfit to make complete the whole theme. 40
41
42
Decorations
Here is just a quick little checklist of things you could use to decorate your space for the tea party: • Table cloth • Napkins and place mats (if you’re feeling really fancy) • Flowers • A banner (depending on the occasion) or flower garland • Place cards • Silverware • Tea pot • Tea cups and saucers • Sugar and cream dishes • Trays and dishes for the food I don’t like spending a fortune on parties, especially on decorations so I usually try my best to find frugal ways to decorate. I’ve gotten a very nice tea pot and cups from a thrift store and they were still in perfect condition. I used a gently used floral print sheet as a table cloth instead of buying one and it worked beautifully. And if you’re feeling really artistic, you can find tutorials on Pinterest on how to make banners, place cards, and the garland.
Here are some of my own themes I created on Polyvore: 1. Sweet and Sassy 2. Victorian and Vibrant 3. Chic and Colorful
43
Menu
Here are some ideas of refreshments you can serve along with the tea: • Shortbread or wafer cookies • Lemon pound cake (or any other flavor) • Croissants • Egg salad, chicken salad, and/or cucumber finger sandwiches • Chocolate covered strawberries (or other fruit) • Scones • Fruit tartlets • Crème puffs Some of these items are so easy to make you may not even need a recipe and some of the others can be found at your local grocery store. Be creative with your menu. The food and tea is always the best part!
Outfit
When I think of tea parties, I think of pretty floral dresses, lace skirts, classy shoes, and vintage jewelry. I usually like to dress this way anyway, so it’s not hard for me to ever find an outfit for the occasion, but if you need a little inspiration I made a little collage of a few essentials of the perfect high tea ensemble. 1. Patterned or lace dresses 2. Classy oxfords or Mary Jane’s 3. Vintage jewelry (brooches, pearls, cameos, and lockets) These are just a few ideas for an outfit, but just remember to make your outfit your own by adding your own personal touch. 44
It won’t be hard for you to have fun planning and hosting a tea party once you get inspired. And now that you’re inspired, go out there and have a party with your girls. An if for any reason, you need a little more convincing, just head over to Pinterest and do a little searching for more tea party ideas that you will absolutely love! 45

RESOLUTE
Check out these healthy recipes By, Tatum of The Pace to stay on track in 2015.
The holidays are fantastic for so many reasons—we get to spend quality time with family and friends, joy is in the air, lights are shining all around, oh and of course there’s the idea that during the most wonderful time of year, calories don’t count (pass the plate of cookies over here, please!). This mentality is fine for the holidays, but it is not the mind-set we want to bring into the New Year. Most of us will start 2015 with the resolution to be healthy! You picture your 2015 self, eating only salads and finally ending your relationship with Ben and Jerry. While this resolution is genuine, it
46
is too radical and frankly, unrealistic. Having the resolution to make 2015 your healthiest year yet does not mean living only in extreme food territory, it’s all about learning to cook with clean, healthy ingredients. If you fill your kitchen with healthy ingredients, healthy eating will become your habit. Here are some amazing recipes to kick off your healthiest year yet! These recipes prove that healthy eating is delicious. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? (Seriously though, there is a cake recipe below…)
Healthy Chocoholic Cake from Chocolate Covered Katie • 1 and ½ cups whole-wheat flour (180g) • 1 tsp baking soda • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder • ½ tsp salt • 2/3 cup sugar or evaporated cane juice • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 1/3 cup oil • 2 tsp apple cider vinegar (or white) • ¾ cup cold water Mix dry ingredients. Then add wet. Mix with a fork (not beaters). Pour into a greased and lined cake pan, and bake in a preheated oven at 355F for about thirty minutes. Cool before frosting.
5-Minute Oatmeal Power Bowl by Oh She Glows
• 1 ripe banana, mashed (the more ripe/spotty the better) • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • Heaping 1/3 cup rolled oats (use certified gluten-free if necessary) • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon • 2/3 cup almond milk • 1/3 cup water • 1 tablespoon ground flax (optional, see note) • For garnish: soaked almonds, pepita seeds, hemp hearts, cinnamon, toasted coconut, nut butter, spices (cinnamon, ginger, allspice) The night before: Grab a medium bowl and mash the banana until smooth. Now stir in the chia, oats, cinnamon, milk, and water until combined. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning: Scoop the oat mixture into a medium pot. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat immediately to medium-low, and stir frequently until heated throughout and thickened. At the end of cooking, stir in flax (optional). Pour oats into bowl. Garnish with your desire toppings. Get cozy! Notes: 1) The ground flax is optional because it creates a bit of a strange texture (almost like a flax egg) in this oatmeal. 2) I love topping my oats with spices - a pinch of cinnamon, ground ginger, and allspice create my perfectly spiced bowl.

Thai Quinoa Salad with Ginger Peanut Dressing from Wealth of Health {Left} Salad: • 3/4 cups uncooked quinoa • 1-2 cups shredded red cabbage • 1 red bell pepper, diced • 1/4 red onion, diced • 1 cup shredded carrots • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro • 1/4 cup diced green onions • 1/2 cup cashew halves or peanuts • 1 cup chickpeas • fresh lime
Dressing: • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter • 2 tsp freshly grated ginger • 3 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp honey • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar • 1 tsp sesame oil • 1 tsp olive oil • water to thin, if necessary
Cook the quinoa: put quinoa and 1-1/2 cups water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low and let simmer for 15 minutes or until quinoa has absorbed all of the water. Remove from heat, fluff with a fork and place in a large bowl to cool. Dressing: Add peanut butter and honey to a medium microwave safe bowl and heat in microwave for 20 seconds. Add the rest of the dressing ingredients and stir until smooth and creamy. If you want to thin out the dressing, stir in a tsp or two of water or olive oil. Add all of the salad ingredients to the large bowl with the quinoa. Stir in the dressing. Granish with cashews, green onions and lime wedges f desired. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
Vegan Pumpkin Chili from The Pace {Above}

Add tomatoes, beans (don’t have to drain or rinse, just pour it all in!), and spices and simmer for a few minutes. Add pumpkin, stir, and simmer over low heat for at least 30 minutes (longer it simmers, the more flavorful it will be!). If you want a spicier chili, feel free to add more spices. Serve and enjoy!
