Educational Goals: Great Work but Don’t Let Up Yet

W elcome to this Special Edition issue of The Sunshiner! This Special Edition is being released at the 2002 Spring Conference, to be distributed by Area Governors and Club Representatives to members not in attendance. The purpose of this issue is to highlight the educational achievements of District 47 to date and to underscore the importance of continuing to strive! Within you’ll find some highlights of the April 30 YTD report; acknowledgment of accomplishments as well as where we stand relative to our goals. As of the Spring Conference, there are

T

his is the time of the year for the Toastmasters International Beat the Clock membership campaign. If your club adds 5 new members during the months of May and June, it may choose to receive either the Successful Club Series or the Better Speaker Series. The Successful Club Series is worth about $40. Good luck! •

There is just enough time to complete what we’ve begun. There already may be enough unfinished paperwork to make a substantial difference. It is to the spirit of seeing through what we’ve begun that this Special Edition is dedicated. •

The Last Push for Distinguished

about six weeks left in the Toastmasters year. These six weeks mean more than many Toastmasters realize towards our overall standing. It is at this point we need to make our last great push to resolve that unfinished business. Complete those last assignments. Fill out your paperwork and make sure it’s received by TI. Charter those clubs and get those dues paid!

District 47 Needs to Meet Several Goals; But Time Remains for Success!

T

he push for Distinguished District is at hand! In the last two months of the Toastmaster Year, District 47 finds itself in a race for Distinguished. The Distinguished District Program is based on four primary statistics: CTMs, ATMs, Paid Clubs and Per Caps. To become Distinguished, a District must meet or exceed all its goals. These goals are set by TI based on previous statistics (which can make following up an exceptional year, as we had last year, very difficult). We also establish “Stretch Goals” to see just how much we can achieve. As of April 30 2002, District 47 has exceeded its goal for ATMs by a whopping 126! However, there still are 9 CTMs, 38 paid clubs and 1,169 per caps to go. What this means is that we can’t give up; we need to get serious. There are 32 clubs on the 1

unpaid list. If t h e s e clubs send in their dues that leaves only 6 clubs to officially charter! The members from these clubs can account for the remaining per caps. The fact is, we can make it! What is required is dedication and follow-up in addition to personal dedication to our Toastmaster responsibilities. This means sending in the paperwork and sealing the deal. We’ve begun this race. Now it’s time to get our second wind and cross that finish line. There is time if we have the will. • S0205A

Share the Spirit of Success? No!! It is more like: Spreading the Spirit of Success!!!! This is a special edition of The Sunshiner to recognize and celebrate those who have achieved! DISTINGUISHED = SUCCESSFUL! And we have a whole lot of Success goin’ on here!!! Don’t see your name here? DON’T WORRY!!! It is not over until you cross the finish line!!! The finish line is June 30th! So run like the wind my friend! For clubs, a measure of Success is whether or not you are Distinguished. That means that you need to achieve 5 out of 10 goals and have either a net gain of 5 or 20 members. Where does your club rank? I congratulate the clubs who are Distinguished as of this issue. I also encourage the clubs who are close to the finish line. GO FOR IT!!! Keep your eye on the goal and make that mad dash for the finish line! Warmest Regards,

Cathy

re you trying to bring your club back to charter strength so it will qualify to be a Distinguished Club? Are you getting a new club started and just need a few more members to be chartered?

Margaret Wan, DTM

Speechcraft is the No. 1 membershipbuilding tool. Use it, whether you want to recruit members for an existing club or a new club. As Division H Governor Wayne Warren pointed out at the last District Executive Committee Meeting, this is what you can do. Hold a Speechcraft for one day and charge, say, $60 per person. (I suggest that you charge the same amount as the dues for a new member in your club. Why? Read on.) At the Speechcraft meeting, ask your participants to sign up as new members of the club. By the time a participant has paid an amount equal to the 6 months’ dues for a

new member, there is little reason for him or her to decline your invitation to membership. The membership will provide many more benefits than a one-day seminar. Among other things, a member will receive the monthly magazine, The Toastmaster. Be sure to show a sample of the magazine.

If you feel strongly that a 1-day Speechcraft is too short, you may offer a 4-session program. The principle is the same - sign up the participants as members at the first session. By the way, do not advertise the Speechcraft as “Speechcraft” - no one knows what it is unless he or she is familiar with the Toastmasters program. Call it “Communication and Leadership Seminar”, “Career Enhancement Workshop”, or something similar. Be creative and design a name according to who your prospects are. This is a proven method. I have done it myself and all participants joined. It works! •

ppropriately, it was in 2001 when our man Dave (Blastic) was making computers serve Toastmasters by redesigning the D47 web site. Dave regained control and his wizardry of the web helped earn him Toastmaster of the Year in 2001. Now, however, Dave can no longer help us with our computer needs. I’m afraid, Dave...

Luckily, Jim Miller of club 1841 agreed to the vexing task of webmaster for the hallowed District website. If you haven’t been there recently, you should investigate it. All TMs should visit the site regularly to see how it evolves. With Jim as webmaster, what is going to happen? We can only expect something wonderful... • 3
