Welcome Message District Governor
Welcome to Junkanoo Fever! I’m extremely proud that we were able to bring our District Conference back to The Bahamas for the first time in 18 years. I hope that you enjoy the flavor of The Bahamas while you are here.
Our conference committee has done a tremendous job in planning a conference that will be remembered for ages. They have been working diligently since June to make this a ‘can’t miss event’ under the leadership of Damien K T Miller, DTM. Thank you Damien for all of your work! We could not have found a better Conference Chair!
This is our first year of the new District 47. While we dearly miss our friends from Southwest Florida, our growth over the past 5 years has propelled us into a new era, thereby providing more leadership opportunities for our members. We have already seen some of the positive impacts of this change. Our District set a record this year with over 85% of our officers trained and 96% of our clubs with at least 4 officers trained. This is thanks to the work of our fabulous Area and Division Governors, our TLI chairs Kenva Bethel, Steven Harwood, and Patricia Rivera, our District TLI Coordinator Mitch McInnis and our LGET Hieu Huynh.
We have a tremendous weekend planned for you with fun, entertainment, education and fellowship. We are pleased to welcome our Region 8 International Director and Past District 47 Governor Kristina Kihlberg, DTM, on her official visit. We are also thrilled to have Past International President, Accredited Speaker Jana Barnhill, DTM, as our keynote speaker this weekend. Her messages will lift you towards achieving more. We will also celebrate the achievements of last year’s team at lunch on Saturday when Immediate Past District Governor Pamela D. Rolle presents the Hall of Fame awards.
For our first-timers, get to know your fellow Toastmasters. You may meet someone this weekend who will become a lifelong friend. I know that has happened for me. Seek out the District Officers and introduce yourself. We’re so excited that you are here to experience Junkanoo Fever!
Matt Kinsey, DTM District 47 Governor
Lt. Governor of Education & Training
Hieu Huynh, DTM x 3
I am excited about having our District Conference in the Bahamas! Recently, at the International Convention in Orlando, Florida, our Immediate Past International President of Toastmasters said that the future of Toastmasters is “sexy”. I believe in this wholeheartedly.
Our District Conferences are “sexy” events which give our members from South Florida and the Bahamas a chance to come together to celebrate all that is Toastmasters! It has been 19 years since our last District Conference in the Bahamas. That makes this Fall Conference super “sexy”!
Our theme for the Fall Conference is “Junkanoo Fever” - this theme summarizes the excitement that’s been building up! It’s about family. It’s about friends. It’s about the frenzy! I hope you feel the fever this weekend!
Lt. Governor of Marketing
Francis Molina Got JUNKANOO FEVER?
While doing research on our theme and learning about the culture and customs of our Bahamian delegates, not only I found the culture to be friendly, rich in arts and music, and deeply influenced by European and African roots – I also came across an interesting definition of Junkanoo (www.urbandictionary.com/):
1. A word used by an individual to excite and entice others to join him/her in an endeavor to begin in the immediate future.
2. A popular Bahamian festival celebrated on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and New Year’s each year. Typically is celebrated with a street parade including music.
In a sentence:
Francis: “Yo let’s go to the Fall Conference in the Bahamas and get our fever on!”
Matt: Junkanooooo!
Hieu: JUNKANOOOOOOO!
Conference Chair Damien: “Whatchu know about Junkanoo?!”
After such a long time, we are certainly proud to be in the Bahamas for this Fall Conference. We hope both Bahamian locals and Florida delegates enjoy what has been prepared and that you can continue to stay engaged in the mission of Toastmasters International while learning from each other.
Message from the Conference Chair
Welcome to JUNKANOO FEVER!
This special event is 18 years in the making and it has deep meaning for old and new Bahamian Toastmasters. Countless hours, meetings, phone calls, letters, e-mails and negotiations went toward molding what promises to be a Conference not to forget. So I thank you for supporting the result of this hard work by attending in some form.
From the moment I joined the Toastmasters Program in 2002, the culmination of my experience has always been realized at the District 47 Conference. It is a forum for our extended family in The Bahamas and Florida to come together and celebrate the true meaning of being a Toastmaster. The Conference is an opportunity to build your professional network, learn new skills and challenge your ability in contest. The experience made me truly appreciate this program, and it added incredible value to the huge investment I was making in my professional development.
Yet, I always wondered of how amazing a Conference would be if it were ever held in the Bahamas. Needless to say, when the news came to me that the District Conference would finally return, I was ecstatic… not even thinking about the next offer to serve that would come my way regarding being Conference Chair.
Today, I admit that serving as Chairperson for this event has been a humbling and challenging experience. The tests were not short in number – longer work hours, countless meetings, liters of midnight oil burned, even a Hurricane less than 7 days before the start. It is an experience I will never forget and will always cherish for the lessons learnt. Yet, I am confident that our goal will be achieved; proving that the Bahamas is ready, willing and able to execute yet another District or International Conference in very short order.
So we are finally here! The rooms have been cleaned, the menus printed, the contestants have practiced and the presenters are ready to perform on the stage. I encourage you, please support every possible forum and event you can, lend a hand if needed, thank your planners and organizers. Ensure that you leave this Conference more ‘feverish’ for the Toastmasters Program than when you arrived.
With Kindest Regards,

An active Toastmaster for 24 years, Jana has been named Outstanding Club President, Division Governor and District Toastmaster of the Year. She is a Past District 44 Governor, having worked with a team that led D44 to the #10 District in the world and she served as International Director from 2002-2004.
Jana has been recognized for her speaking skills as well, being a five-time winner of the District 44 International Speech Contest, and going on to place 3rd in the World Championship of Public Speaking in 1993 and 2nd in 1996. In 1997, she became only the fifth woman in the organization to earn the coveted Accredited Speaker designation.
Jana and her husband Robert are the only couple in Toastmasters who are both Past International Presidents and Accredited Speakers.
Professionally, Jana is a Speaker/Trainer through L.I.V.E. Speakers, Inc., a company she owns with her husband. She conducts seminars throughout the United States on management topics; including communication and leadership, team building, managing change and personality traits. She has written for different magazines and was quoted in the Wall Street Journal following President Obama’s Inaugural Address.
Jana is active in the community with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, has served on several Boards including the Lubbock Community Theater, Lubbock Women’s Club and is active in her church. It is an honor to have such a highly qualified and experienced presenter in Nassau for our Conference. Her information packed sessions are not to be missed.
The Simple Side of Leadership
General Session - Worksheet
With the organization’s new focus on club quality, it is more important than ever that we have strong leaders. How can you become one? There are thousands of books written each year on the topic. While rich in theory, they often lack the practical pointers that can make or break your effectiveness as a leader. In Toastmasters we serve as officers and are provided with manuals and training, but even here we may receive little feedback along the way or insights from those who have gone before us. As a result, some leaders look around at the end of their term to find no one is following.
In this session Past International President Jana Barnhill will share some of the hard lessons she learned during her leadership journey…lessons that can help everyone become the great leader that is needed today.
• Lead by ________________________.
• Everyone must know what is __________________ _____ _________.
• Know as much about the organization’s _____________ and __________________ as possible.
• _______________________ must be _________________________.
• Show ___________________ to ________________________.
• Be ________________________.
• Have a __________________ _________________.
• Stay ________________________.
• The _________________ in ________________ takes full __________________________ for any ________________________.
Jana Barnhill, DTM, AS, 2008 – 2009 Toastmasters International President
Speaking with IMPACT
General Session - Worksheet
Would you like to be a better speaker? Is it your dream to one day compete in the World Championship of Public Speaking? What about becoming a professional speaker? If you answered yes to any of those then you must learn how to Speak with IMPACT.
That includes understanding the level of desire needed, how to choose a topic, how to prepare and learn your speech, how to dress, raise your confidence and take charge of the podium. Jana Barnhill has been on the “big stage” twice, placing 2nd and 3rd and is one of only six women in Toastmasters International to have earned the Accredited Speaker designation. In this session she will share her insight on how you can take your speaking to that level. I_________________
