TM LUIZ BRAVIN Long before Dr. Godfrey McAllister had a dream, he was a competitor. A finalist at the World Championship of Public Speaking. A three-peat District 47 Table Topics Champion. Pioneering organizer of the first ever Table Topics Contest featuring District Champions from all over competing head to head in an abbreviated debate format. The Distinguished Toastmaster, known as “Dr. Perspective,” has made District 47 proud time and time again. But he’s not nearly done. Godfrey McAllister has a dream. His dream is to elevate Table Topics, that crux of nearly every club meeting, to the International Convention in 2022. Table Topics would take its rightful place alongside the International Speech Contest as a means for the finest speakers from around the world to test their impromptu speaking prowess at the highest level. The World Championship of Table Topics would continue in its current format (Club, Area, Division, and District Contests) and move on to Regional, World Semifinal, and Final rounds mirroring the structure of the International Contest. The vision, expounded in an eight-page summary written entirely by Dr. McAllister, argues “Table Topics, aka, Impromptu Speaking skills, represents the epitome of communication dexterity.” He explains further that Table Topics has “at least equal potential to deliver [Toastmasters’s] communication objectives.” Consider how many Toastmasters join to improve their communication skills. While prepared speaking is an important part of it, the vast majority of communication at work, home, and in community organizations is unplanned. The ability to effectively structure and deliver a compelling message without preparation is extraordinarily impressive. While expensive coaching can lift a good, prepared speaker high into the International Speech Contest, it’s a non-factor in Table Topics. Rather, Table Topics combines quick-thinking, storytelling, and all the elements of effective delivery with the pressure of time. Speakers outline, write, and cut their speech as they’re speaking. It’s the difference between playing horse on a half-court and improvising through a double-team in an NBA championship. On October 22, Godfrey McAllister spent his birthday hosting the Impromptu Speaking Extravaganza (Table Topics on steroids) with all past District 47 Table Topics Champions invited along with champions from other Districts. It was a head-to-head, single-elimination matchup in which each speaker got 60 seconds to respond to a topic in a debate format with also a brief rebuttal permitted to each of the two impromptu speakers. The winners advanced to the next round based on a vote of several hundred audience members from around the world. Toastmasters International President Richard Peck delivered the evening's keynote remarks. Ms. Dorrette Keen, DTM, was the first-place winner of the inaugural Impromptu Speaking Extravaganza. Godfrey McAllister has a dream. Will members of District 47 support Godfrey’s dream to bring Table Topics to the International Convention in 2022? For the man who finds himself at the finals stage in nearly every contest and earned his DTM within one year, no dream is beyond reach.

Kiss:

KEEP IT SIMPLE TM MARLENE SMITH

I sat there thinking, not again. I am mentally dying, again. Cause of death: PowerPoint. With the abundance of online meetings, there is a plethora of PowerPoint presentations. This PowerPoint Pandemic is a killer, killing our creativity, burying our curiosity, and numbing our thoughts. Ugh! Granted, it is very difficult to condense a lot of information into an interesting PowerPoint presentation (PPT). Me to brain, this is a presentation, not a dissertation. I give the “KISS,” Keep It Simply Simple, of life to my PPT. KISS gives birth to KISSES or Keep IT Simply Simple Easy Speech. First, the technology aspect. Be consistent on the font, size, color, design, template, bullet points. Keep It Simply Simple with readable font, limited bullet points, and plain wording. When we read, we tune out noises, including the speaker’s voice. Should this message be seen, heard, or both? By following the KISS method, the delivery of the message is simplified. When producing a PPT, there is a plenitude of choices. KISS these options goodbye! The opening and closing slides should be simple and include author, contact, date, and references. Consider the audience in choosing the language, including word count per line and per slide, as well as the data display. Cause of death: multiple piercings by data points! When I “KISS” my presentation choices, I consider the slide show view, size, and order. Following the style of Toastmasters, the speech and slide transitions, timing, and pauses are considered. Above all else, I never, ever read the slide. Reading a slide is the contributing factor to death by PPT. My PPT guidelines: Review, review, practice, practice, add storytelling, and Keep It Simply Simple throughout the entire PPT. Smile as you present the next KISS PPT. It will be a great success.

TM DUDLEY TURNQUEST 2020 has been an extremely difficult year for everyone. People have lost their lives, their livelihoods, and some their minds. Through it all, though, different organizations around the world have done their part in trying to make sure that their members have weathered the lockdowns, from ensuring that their members were mentally sound to keeping some form of human interaction going among them. It may have been Zoom or Google Teams. And as the pandemic lessened, it may have become a quick handshake or a hug. Toastmasters in particular has provided that outlet. Everything that has happened over the course of these past few months has proved that Toastmasters creates adaptable leaders. It fosters friendships, it builds bonds, it makes us remember the time before the pandemic, if only for a moment. For this I take this time to say on behalf of members around the world for this incredible organization that has provided some mental and social relief to people around the world: Thank you.

YOUTH ENTREPRENEURS #2DAWORLD by Visionaries Toastmasters Club #7548881

Many could take the presence of a global pandemic as a sign to ‘throw in the towel,’ but not the members of Visionaries Toastmasters Club #7548881! Despite declining economies and minimalistic opportunities, we young minds have determined to live according to our Club Quote of the 2020-2021 Year: “One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again” – Abraham Maslow. For us, fear of the current global climate is not a choice, but a step on our staircase to lifelong success. Allow us to share our businesses – our choice to grow – with our District 47 Family as a banner of hope to encourage our fellow Toastmasters to move forward toward a growing success as well: I’ll let you in on a little secret: ever heard the old idiom that says to “never mix business with pleasure?” Well, if your pleasure includes racking up more sales for your business, WHY NOT? INGREDIENTS

TM Chevette Black, Food & Nutrition Educator & Owner of Vette'z Delightful Treat

4 chicken breasts 1 large coconut, grated 2 eggs ¼ cup all-purpose flour 2-4 tbsp of coconut milk, whole milk, or nondairy milk Salt and pepper to taste (white pepper is best) Oil for frying

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Break open the coconut and grate. 2. Wash the chicken breasts thoroughly, pat dry, place into a shallow pan and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. 3. In a small bowl, beat the eggs; add 1 tablespoon of the flour, coconut, and milk, along with salt and pepper to taste. 4. Spread remaining flour in a shallow dish and spread the grated coconut in another shallow dish. Roll the breasts in the flour, dip into the batter, then into the grated coconut. 5. Heat the oil in the deep-fat fryer or deep pot, and using tongs, place the coated chicken into the hot fat. Fry until golden brown and drain on a wire rack.

VETTE’S TIPS: Grated coconut can be purchased from the store. Add a little lemon or lime juice to chicken after washing for an extra boost of flavor. You can also utilize our favorite seasoning to season chicken along with the salt and pepper. Serve with a sauce of your choosing.

One of the most popular dishes in the Bahamas is chicken. We love it fried, steamed, baked, barbecued, deep fried, boiled, and broiled. There are times, however, when we look for nontraditional ways to make our favorite dish to avoid boredom. The problem is not the product but rather our taste buds —we want to keep them excited and tantalized for our next meal. Similarly, with the Toastmasters program, it is a classic and continues to meet its goal: to aid members in their personal and professional growth. With time, we needed to enhance the program to appeal to members and visitors alike. Whence, the Pathways program—same great ingredients, different method of preparation.

BRAIN FOOD Is there “Brain Food”? The supermarket has signs for gluten-free food, seafood, pre-cooked food, plant food, and frozen food. Ask a clerk for “Brain Food” and watch the great eyeball roll. Do brains make noises or chomp when they eat food? My brain is one of my body parts that I have not seen nor have a desire to see. Other body parts would be fun to see. Wow, my brain at work with weird anatomy thoughts. Maybe my brain is hungry for some brain food? Hey, brain, are you hungry? Hmm, do I listen to the brain answer or the stomach growl? Depends on what is in the kitchen pantry! Yes, there is “Brain Food.” Have you ever thought about eating certain foods for brain health? Probably not as many of us just eat whatever, whenever, just because to nourish our physical bodies. Brain factoids: The brain composes 2% of our body weight. Yet the brain consumes 20% of our total daily energy intake. In other words, our brain functioning depends on what we eat. The brain can strengthen itself, add new brain cells, and repair itself daily in a process known as neuroplasticity. As plant food helps plants grow, brain food improves neuroplasticity! These brain foods are high in the chemical polyphenol. Brain foods include turmeric, red grapes, green tea, and blueberries, part of the MediterraneanDASH Intervention for Neurogenerative Delay or MIND Diet. Turning red grapes into wine can be part of this diet. The number of 5-ounce glasses per day depends on your gender. No saving up those glasses for the weekend is allowed. Neuroplasticity, polyphenols, MIND Diet! Ouch, my brain hurts just reading this stuff! Simply add more fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, avocado, olive oil, fiber, and whole grains. Drink water or green tea. Leave in the supermarket those sugary foods, sweetened beverages, animal products, and ultra-processed snacks. It’s not brainy to eat these foods! Think before you eat! Your brain will be happier. You are what you eat! Our Division contest is December 5th at 10:00 a.m. There were 5 “dry runs” in which contestant and functionaries were able to experience being moved in to and out of breakout rooms, and “ZOOM Playtimes” in which members experienced the technology, hands on. We plan additional “dry runs’ and “ZOOM Playtimes” for the International Speech and Table Topics Contests. Our goal is to empower members to run their club level contests with confidence. We’ve been active in Community Outreach. Dorrette Keen conducted a Speechcraft for members of the Heart of Compassion Ministries. She was pleased to be supported by so many Toastmasters from the entire District 47 and plans to charter a new club from that Speechcraft. Ann McLaughlin is wrapping up a Youth Leadership Program for the Treasure Coast Jack & Jill of America Youth. The plan is to charter a gavel club for the continued growth of the involved youth in January. A Speechcraft is scheduled for January for the Adults/Parents of the Treasure Coast Jack & Jill of America Clubs. Did Ann’s Youth Leadership Program have an impact on the parents? Rich Otten, DTM, continues his outreach with the Florida Prison System. Thank you, Rich, for your many years of service to this often-forgotten population. District Director Barbara Strasdas, DTM, and George Strasdas, DTM, are each mentoring a candidate for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County Youth of the Year contest. Toastmasters was represented at a booth and during the registration period at the Stuart Air Show; it was great exposure, even if a little soggy. Thank you Talking Heads of Stuart & High Impact Speakers. If you visit Critter Creek Ranch and Sanctuary in Jupiter, you can pick up Toastmasters information & an invitation to join. Linda Elie is following up with 2 Rotary Club organizations. Valerie Johnson, DTM, will address the IBSEN Conference, hosted by IRSC Toastmasters later in November. Her goal is to inspire these international students to become Toastmasters and experience the many professional benefits of a Toastmasters membership. Congratulations to Gold Coast Toastmasters Club, which celebrated its 60th anniversary. Richard E. Peck, DTM, our Toastmasters International President, delivered the keynote address. Such an inspirational evening. Congratulations also to Palm City Orators and High Impact Speakers for achieving the Smedley Award by adding at least 5 new members in September and October. Talk Up Toastmasters is trying for March and April! Our Division Goal is to be Presidential Distinguished. Our focus is on membership acquisition and retention. We will encourage our clubs to bring added value to our members through excellent meetings, fellowship, and fun. Some out-of-the-box thinking required? Absolutely! We are almost halfway through our term, just hitting our stride. Our enthusiasm is enhanced by the knowledge that we are a TEAM and a sense that we now have some idea of what we are doing as well as how to do it. We look forward to the rest of the year. 8 | THE SUNSHINER

FIRST BAHAMAS BRANCH OF TOASTMASTERS CLUB 1600 HIGHLIGHT

On November 14th, The First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters, Club 1600 donated 22 electronic devices to children of Union Village in its first wave of giving. The club’s goal is to donate 100 devices to the community. Pictured from left to right is Club President TM Shacoy Mulling, a young resident of Union Village and Immediate Past President and Area Director DTM Ancin Munnings

Union Village students who lack reliable or any technological device to accommodate remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic received a critical tool from Toastmasters Club 1600 during its ninth annual Neil Percentie Back-to-School Giveaway held over the weekend. “We are in a new era of education as a result of the global pandemic, one that we must embrace,” said TM Shacoy Mullings, president of the first branch of Toastmasters in the Bahamas. “In this new era, the classroom is now a device placed in the palm of your hand.” Remote learning exacerbated existing inequalities, particularly in the public-school system. It also created new ones. Consequently, placing technology within reach of those who need it most was of paramount importance to the nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills. Over the summer, club members began re-envisioning their back-to-school event in light of the new reality of virtual classrooms and social distancing mandates sparked by the coronavirus.

For months, Club 1600 encouraged private individuals and other Toastmasters clubs to rise to meet a critical technological need either in cash, technical expertise, or second-hand learning tools. The club’s goal is to donate 100 electronic devices to young Union Village residents, helping to bridge the digital divide between the haves and the have-nots. Club 1600 members, including Onit Systems’s founder, Toastmaster Valentino Munroe; Immediate Past President and Toastmasters Area Director, Distinguished Toastmaster Ancin Munnings; and Toastmaster John LaGuerre repaired and updated software of the older devices. “There is an old saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ Look around, what you all see here today is that village,” said Toastmaster Mullings at the event, which saw 22 of roughly 100 young attendees receive brand-new Samsung Galaxy tablets as well as gently used digital devices. Everyone received books, pencils, and pens. “The adults of Union Village believe in you and are counting on you to succeed on your educational journey,” said the club president to the children. Those in attendance enjoyed free drinks, hot dogs, ice cream, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn, and cake at Saturday’s event. Perhaps more importantly, they received brief motivational speeches delivered by members of Club 1600. “Steer clear of negative peer pressure as it only leads down the path to bad grades and bad decisions,” Toastmaster L. Robert Knowles told the youngsters. “Surround yourself with friends and acquaintances that are positive because that attitude will rub off on you. Have you ever heard the saying you are the company you keep? Well, it’s true.” The second presenter, Toastmaster LaGuerre appealed to the community’s youth in English and Creole. “Challenge yourselves to always try your best. We all believe in you, but you must also believe in yourselves if you want to achieve greatness,” he said. The event honors the memory of the late Toastmaster Neil Percentie. The community-minded, Club 1600 member was gunned down on September 7, 2011. “We believe very strongly in the work he started in the lives of the people of Union Village. We donate these laptops and tablets to you in his honor in the hopes that you will succeed in school,” Toastmaster Mullings told the crowd. “I want to remind you that these devices are intended to be used to facilitate your schoolwork . . . . The First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters Club 1600 is happy to assist with this transition in your lives. Understand that it comes with great responsibility. There will inevitably be distractions, but the onus is not only on your teachers and your parents but on you as well. Again, remember to always put your best foot forward, never give in to negative peer pressure, strive for excellence, and surround yourself with positive influences.” On hand for the occasion was Toastmaster Percentie’s mother, Florina Tinker. “I was very pleased to see all the children and to see them enjoy themselves. This was an awesome event that touched even the surrounding areas of Pinedale and Peardale. I thank Club 1600 for their continued support of the memory of my son.” One grateful recipient is Samantha Gotshell, a primary school student previously worried about falling behind in her studies. “This will help me take part in my classes,” said the young girl who dreams of becoming a doctor. With demand for computers at an all-time high, Jenny Bethel, a Union Village resident, praised Club 1600 for its generosity. “This initiative will benefit many homes,” she said. “Many children in this community were unable to take part in virtual learning due to them not having devices 9 | THE SUNSHINER
