Everyone’s a Winner on the Leonay Loop! New Dimensions Program Director, Matt Pikse, was thrilled with the response from the inaugural Leonay Loop family fun run. He has spent the last 6 months nutting out the logistics of organising a community fun run, and was rewarded for his efforts with blue skies and a great turnout of young and old competitors. Matt was pleased to receive high praise from the serious competitors for such a well-planned event, promising that next year will be even bigger and better.
BUILDER
Issue 71
The vision of New Dimensions club owner, Jad Raguz, is to turn our local community into the healthiest community in Australia – an ambitious task, but with annual events like this raising money for a local charity, Jad is pointing our community in the right direction. 100% of money raised from the event was donated to Penrith Community Kitchen. This particular charity was chosen because it is a small local charity that doesn’t receive much support so they were most grateful to receive $6000 from the event. For many of the competitors, it was their first time participating in such an event. The 3km course made it an achievable distance that encouraged whole families to participate, unlike a more daunting longer run. Springwood runners took line honours on the day, with Earl O’Brien blitzing the 3km loop in 8mins 51 sec and Jim Perrett close on his heels.

community news. Spring has well and truly sprung, with some glorious weather over the past few weeks, prompting me to finally turn my green sludge pond back into a swimming pool. It only took me about a week, but it’s now sparkling blue and we had our first swim for the season - albeit a short one (I think we need a few more warm days!) The gardens in my street are a riot of beautiful spring colour at the moment, and my lemon trees are laden with fruit. If you have an abundance of citrus at your place, you might like to try my delicious recipe on page 8. Don’t forget, if you have a favourite recipe you’d like to share, just drop me an email. This month we’re introducing a new segment, “Spotlight On…”. Each month we’ll feature a tradesperson or businessperson from the Emu Plains/ Leonay area. Check out our first Spotlight on page 3. Remember, this is YOUR community newspaper, so if you have some really exciting news, drop me a line or give me a call. Meanwhile, sit back, relax, enjoy this beautiful weather and your local news.

Good NEWS for Emu! After walking past a vacant newsagency on the Great Western Highway for the past 18 months, Emu Plains residents are happy to once again pick up their daily news from number 69 GWH. Charlie and Helen Sharpe have been home delivering the Sydney Morning Herald since April this year, and in July they also added the Telegraph to their delivery contract. So it seemed a logical step for the Sharpes to support local community properly by opening the old Emu Plains Newsagency. It was a proud day when they opened their doors for business on September 5th. The Sharpes are not newcomers to the news game – they previously owned the Stafford Street Newsagency in Penrith and are very excited about the fresh new start in the Emu Plains shop. Due to their friendly service and positive attitude, many of their old Stafford Street customers are making the hike across the river now, just to collect their newspapers from Charlie and Helen. The once vacant shop is now fully stocked with all the latest news, a full range of stationery, gift cards and magazines. Rosco Hutchinson from Vintage FM has been plugging the new business. Charlie is grateful for Rosco’s support saying, “He does a lot for the local Penrith community.” Emu Plains Newsagency is a Cartridge World supplier, as well as a Parcel Point collection agency. Charlie is a J.P. so call in to see him if you need any documents signed. And if you’re planning a holiday along the coast, Charlie and Helen can sell you a fishing licence. The only thing lacking at the moment is the Lottery Agency. The Sharpes are grateful for all the community support in petitioning the lottery office to grant the Emu Plains Newsagency a lottery licence. With luck, that will come through very soon. In the meantime, make sure you call in to welcome Charlie and Helen in the fresh new Emu Plains Newsagency – 69 Great Western Highway, Emu Plains.

A QUESTION OF HEALTH Treating the Nervous System
Problem Feet? New Clinic to the Rescue!
by Michelle Beech In today’s fast-paced world, with the stresses and stressors put upon us, many people have nervous system issues such as anxiety, depression and fatigue. Fortunately, herbal medicine is a natural alternative to pharmacological intervention. Nervous Restoratives: are stimulating or relaxing, are supportive in nature and “nutritive” to the nervous system. Examples include Avena sativa, Turnera diffusa and Withania somnifera. Sedatives/Hypnotics These calm the “nervous” individual, and promote healthy sleep. They support proper nervous system function rather than act as a “knockout”. Frequent lower doses can treat moderate to severe daytime anxiety, whilst a single higher dose in the evening promotes sleep. Examples include Verbena officinalis, Chamomilla recutita, Lavandula officinalis, Passiflora incarnata, Scutellaria lateriflora, Valeriana officinalis, and Humulus lupulus. Stimulants Particularly useful in convalescence, they improve performance in demanding situations and “speed up” individuals suffering from perpetual tiredness, low metabolic rate, and other symptoms of parasympathetic dominance. Examples include Rosmarinus officinalis, Cola vera, Thea sinensis, Coffea arabica, Coffea robusta, Theobroma cacao, and Panax ginseng. Antidepressants & Euphorics These raise the level of sympathetic function and some assist with neurotransmitter buildup/breakdown. Most are subtle in their action, although dramatic results are often seen in the long-term. Examples include Hypericum perforatum, Turnera diffusa, Melissa officinalis, and Theobroma cacao. Anxiolytics These medicines are complex and crossover into nervous restoratives, sedatives/hypnotics, and antidepressants. Their unique mix of activities makes them invaluable in the treatment of anxiety-related disorders. Examples include Piper methysticum, Passiflora incarnata and Valeriana officinalis. The potential for achieving balance with plant medicines is great but we must never forget that most people need ongoing support and nurturing and shouldn’t just be medicated. When herbal medicine is combined with other non-pharmacological approaches, the whole person can be successfully treated, and life-changing results can be achieved. If you or a loved one needs nervous system support, then Michelle Beech would love to assist you to achieve better results, naturally. Call her on 0414 944 112 or 4739 9947.
Anyone who has had aching feet, ankles or legs know how debilitating it can be in your everyday life, but a new podiatry clinic in Emu Plains can provide the care you need to minimise your discomfort. Stella Panaretos, podiatrist and director of Emu Plains Podiatry says the new clinic will help patients with their foot treatment needs. “Often people try and put up with their pain and not seek treatment for years. Over time this can lead to serious problems and affect your quality of life,” Stella said. “Patients with minor foot ailments tell me how much better they feel both physically and emotionally after some general podiatric skin and nail care. Corns, calluses and ingrown toenails can be treated so that you walk without pain. ” The clinic also provides biomechanical treatment, lower limb gait assessment and orthotics for conditions relating to sport and occupational injuries and for children with feet problems. Working in senior roles in both private and public practice in the Penrith and Blue Mountains district for close to ten years, including Nepean Hospital’s High Risk Foot Clinic, Stella has extensive knowledge of all podiatric complaints and provides specialist care for patients at risk of limb loss or infections due to underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease. Qualified with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Podiatry) from the University of Western Sydney, Stella is a member of the Australian Podiatric Association and participates in professional programs to keep abreast of latest podiatric treatment practices. With an academic role at the University of Western Sydney, she is a clinical supervisor for undergraduate students in the podiatric medicine degree program. “I’m dedicated to providing the highest level of foot and lower leg care to all my patients, and I’m excited in announcing the opening of my clinic,” Stella said. Emu Plains Podiatry is a registered provider with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, HICAPS and provides bulk billing services for the Medicare Enhanced Primary Care Program (via GP referral). Located at Unit 5-71 Billington Place, Emu Plains, call 4735 7337 for an appointment.

McCarthy College Offers Choices McCarthy Catholic College is dedicated to leading their students down the right path for a bright future. Whilst they run a very strong academic program, some students simply aren’t cut out for academia. That’s where the school’s Trade Training Centre comes to the fore. The Trade Training Centre provides the most appropriate mix of trade training, academic education and personal development programs for students wishing to pursue a trade career. The Centre provides a flexible approach to learning that caters for individual learning needs including face-to-face classroom interaction, online lessons, tutorials and one to one interaction with teachers. Currently in it’s third year, the federal government funded Trade Trading Centre is a consortium program involving four Catholic colleges in the region – McCarthy, St Columbus, Caroline Chisholm and Xavier. The government aims to increase apprenticeship retention and provides funding for centres focusing on skills shortage areas. At present, 50% of apprenticeships fail in their first year. The Trade Training Centre offers students the opportunity to begin a trade apprenticeship while remaining at school and completing the HSC, giving them better options for the future. Students entering Year 11 can opt for one of the seven trades on offer at the school: automotive; bricklaying/blocklaying; carpentry; electrotechnology; hospitality; hairdressing and engineering - metal fabrication. The curriculum is divided into periods of HSC studies, including Trade Training and work placement. The Trade Training Centre operates a four-day timetable

during school hours, including one day of trade training in the very impressive, fully equipped workshops. On the fifth day of the week, students undertaking school-based apprenticeships will do work placement. While most apprenticeships in NSW work on a term of up to four years full-time employment, the school-based apprenticeships are broken down into part-time and full-time components. After completion of the HSC, a school-based apprentice will have up to 3 years of full-time employment as an apprentice. For more information about the McCarthy Catholic College Trade Training Centre, contact the school on 4735 3211.

Did you know
that the St Finbar’s Parish in Glenbrook is 100 years old this year? The little old church on the St Finbar’s site was built 100 years ago by the Sisters of St Joseph to be used as a school for the children of the Irish immigrant railway tunnel workers. The little old church has been undergoing a major facelift and to celebrate the 100th anniversary, the parish will hold the official re-opening and blessing of the restored and renamed ‘Father Barlow Centre’ on Sunday 18th November.
6:30pm – 9:00pm The Malcolm Borland Foyer, The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre 597 High Street, Penrith Sophisticated ladies, get ready to slip on your deadly glamorous cocktail dress. Dashing gents, don your classy suit and hat. On Saturday 27th October, Emu Heights Productions, a local not-for-profit theatre organisation, brings the 1940s back to Penrith for its stylish fundraising evening, ‘Black is the Colour’. Featuring an impressive cabaret performance, drinks, canapés and a sneak preview of the upcoming ‘film noir’ styled production of Hamlet, tickets to ‘Black is the Colour’ fundraising evening include one complementary ticket to see the daring new adaptation of Hamlet when it opens in November at The Joan. Emu Heights Productions founders, Ian and Michele Zammit, are passionate about bringing quality theatre to Western Sydney making live performance more accessible for theatre lovers and the uninitiated alike. “We love staging productions in Penrith!. For many people, our performances are their first live theatre experience which reinforces the need for greater development and accessibility of theatre in Western Sydney. Hamlet is also on the HSC English curriculum, which gives students the opportunity to experience quality live theatre right here in the West.” But of course, producing quality theatre requires funding! Which is why Emu Heights Productions invites any and all theatre lovers to come along to their fundraising soiree so that bigger and better productions can proceed to grace The Joan in 2013. It’s set to be a glamorous night of entertainment so come along and support this worthwhile local theatre organisation. Method 1. Grease a 25cm flan tin. Sift the flour, cocoa, icing sugar and salt into a bowl. Set aside. 2. Melt butter and water in a saucepan over a low heat. Pour over the flour mixture and stir until the flour has absorbed all the liquid and the dough is smooth. 3. Press the dough evenly over the base and side of the prepared tin. Chill the pastry case. 4. Preheat oven to 190ºC / Gas 5, and place a baking sheet inside to heat up. 5. Prepare the filling. Whisk the sugar and eggs in a bowl until the sugar has dissolved. Add lemon rind and juice and mix well. Stir in the cream. Taste and add more lemon juice or sugar it needed, for a sweet taste or a touch of tartness. 6. Pour the filling into the chilled tart shell and place the tin on the hot baking sheet. 7. Bake for 25-30 mins or until the filling is set. Cool on a rack and decorate with chocolate curls. Serve with vanilla choc chip icecream and enjoy!

Owners, Deb Saywell and Sue Rochford have been involved in kids sport and coached kids soccer for over 20 years. They saw a need for a soccer skills program that would give kids the opportunity to develop all their basic fundamental movement skills whilst developing and learning the fundamentals necessary to play soccer in a fun and enjoyable environment. They launched in May 2012 and have experienced enormous support from parents looking for a fun skills based program. The support has been overwhelming and as a result they are launching two new clinics in Term 4. Clinics run for 8 weeks during the school term. Using fun based games , children aged 2 to 5 learn the basics of soccer including shooting, dribbling and goalkeeping whilst kids aged 6 to 12 learn all the basics as well as focus on skill development and teamwork to become more confident in their ability if and when they play club soccer. Enrolments are now open for Term 4. Enrol by calling 0400 483 198 or visit their website www.grasshoppersoccer.com.au and choose your nearest location.
Bowling Champs (L-R) Joy Howe, Vicki Fitzpatrick, Val Charlwood and Rhonda Crimston
Bowled over with Success
It has been a great season for the Glenbrook WBC (Women’s Bowling Club). Joy Howe, Vicki Fitzpatrick, Val Charlwood, all from Emu Plains, and Rhonda Crimston of Glenbrook, made a formidable team to win at District level in the Nepean District over 60’s 4’s. The ladies out-bowled all 15 other clubs in the competition. The ladies then went on to compete at zone level, which encompasses all of the Blue Mountains and Western District. They missed out on progressing to the State play offs by the narrowest of margins. Congratulations on a brilliant effort, girls!
