Emu Lions Celebrate 30 Years The Lions Club of Emu Plains are celebrating their 30th Anniversary. The local club will be hosting a dinner on Saturday 6th October at the Emu Sports Club at Leonay, at which time they will officially donate $2,000 to each of nine local charities, recognising their respective contributions to the community. Those nine charities are; Penrith Community Kitchen (Penrith), Kurrambee School Little By Little (Werrington), Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (Western Sydney University, Kingswood Campus), Barnados Penrith Children’s Family Centre (Cranebrook), The Haven Nepean Women’s Shelter, Nepean Hospital Cancer Care Centre (Kingswood), Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (Glenmore Park), Nepean Hospital (Kingswood) and the Lions Clubs International Foundation. The charities will be officially passed their donations at the dinner, where it is anticipated they will outline how they will utilise the contribution from Emu Lions. Details of the function are soon to be released and Lions Secretary, Sue Hunt, said “all will be welcome and full details will be available through the press and via our website and Facebook page”. It is currently planned that Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School Aboriginal Dance Ensemble will perform the Welcome to Country and a dance performance at the function, local singing artist, Brittany Gleeson, will also perform on the night. cont. Local Artist Inspiring Homes

Emu Plains artist Deborah Hughes has taken her resin art to new heights, with many homes around the country now displaying her amazing artworks and homewares. The talented local artist began painting 13 years ago, in 2005, after watching her mother Shirley paint for many years as a fine artist. “My mother painted portraits. She used oils and was very detailed with her art. She painted all sorts of beautiful stuff ” explained Deborah. Deborah specialises in resin and ink art. She has also recently begun creative garden art, which is wall art consisting of vertical hanging gardens made from artificial greenery. You could say it’s wall art of a different kind! Her ability to match art with home has lead to a range of homewares that include cushions and framed prints. “My resin art is abstract. I’m inspired by the ocean. It’s very coastal, like being on the water. At the same time, home trends and colours excite me. I enjoy matching my artworks to people’s homes. It’s always evolving from season to season” she said. She has recently had her artwork shown at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where she entered in the Rural Abstract and Marinescape categories. This gave her great exposure, with many drawn to the beauty of resin art. Deborah’s favourite time of year to paint is Spring and Summer, when the local area comes ‘alive’. “These seasons are very vibrant. The colours around us then are unbelievable. I particularly enjoy painting outside. There’s no better place than being out in the open air”. For anyone wanting to take up resin art, Deborah has these words of advice, “Have a go! Don’t worry about not having any talent when you start. It all takes time. You start small and go from there”. “Resin art is beautiful, but it can also be a tricky material to work with. It took me two years to get used to. Once you do, it will be very rewarding” she ended. For more information about Deborah Hughes’ art, visit her website www.deborahhughesart.com.au or find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/deborahhughesart. Deborah’s resin art | Image: www.facebook.com/deborahhughesart

Leonay’s Jessica Fox continued her unbeaten run by winning the women’s K1 and C1 at Canoe Slalom World Cup 3 at Augsburg in Germany recently, making it six World Cup wins in a row. The pundits will tell you there can never be certainties in sport, but when Jessica Fox won her sixth consecutive canoe slalom gold medal last month, she asserted herself as the closest thing to a sure thing sport can deliver. Such is the Australian’s confidence now, she even afforded herself a smile as she clanked into the final gate on the Augsburg course. It’s not cockiness, but a belief in where she is in her paddling at the moment, and what she is capable of. Competitors are left looking on in awe, with a look of rabbits staring into a blazing spotlight. Tokyo 2020 is still a long way off, but after a K1 silver and bronze at the past two Olympics, and with the debut of C1 at the next Games, Fox is already eyeing off the prospect of making history. Even with a two second penalty for a gate touch, Fox was able to finish 4.50 seconds ahead of current World Champion Mallory Franklin, of Great Britain, with Brazil’s Ana Satila third. “We are two years out and the Tokyo clock is ticking, so I really want to make every race count and learn each time I sit on the start line. I love this course, and I had an amazing weekend” Fox said. “It was an amazing three weeks and I’m so thrilled with that last race. I really, really attacked it, I hit the last gate, but I think the rest of my run was almost perfect”. And looking ahead Fox added, “I will have a little break now and then go back into training. We’ll actually be going to Rio (2018 World Championships location) for a little training camp next and I’m looking forward to coming back for the next World Cups”.  Local girl Jessica Fox | Image: Dezso Vekassy, www.canoephotography. com. Words Matter “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?” questions Jane Nelsen (Founder of Positive Discipline Program) . Some people think that screaming at children, putting them down, and calling them names, toughens them up. It’s a tough world out there, and we just gotta make them tougher. Phooey! The research is very clear. Treating kids poorly can lead to mental health problems. Do you know that 1 in 4 of the young people in Australia will develop clinical depression? Yep, in this ‘lucky country’. I have worked with kids as young as 8 years of age who have had depression. Mental illness is a road going to a whole lot of suffering and heartache. Not only for the young person, but his/her parents, friends, school, and community. I see a lot of this ‘toughen them up’ approach on the sporting field. Parents and coaches screaming at kids, calling them ‘losers’ and ‘rubbish’. Silly me, I thought kids wanted to play sport to be active, to socialise, and to build their self-esteem, not to be bullied and abused. Frequently, quite vulnerable children do a sport in the community to build their resilience. Most sports have a code of ethics for administrators, coaches, and spectators, which have strict guidelines which emphasise that the game should be enjoyable, children should be treated fairly and respectfully, and the duty of care required. Remaining silent about a sports coach who swears at and yells at and degrades your child is certainly the easy way out, but this is how adults get away with child abuse. Emotional and verbal abuse desensitises your child to abuse. Would you accept a teacher, neighbour, or pastor/youth leader screaming at your kid and putting him/her down? If the answer is ‘no’ then don’t accept it on the sports field. Words matter. So does your child’s wellbeing. As the old saying goes “winning isn’t everything”. A local basketball club has the right attitude. They prominently display a sign saying… “Please remember • These are children • It’s just a game • It is not the NBL.”

Lions Club fundraise by various means throughout the year. The Emu Plains Club acknowledge the Chocolate Wheel (which operates every Saturday in the Westfield Plaza, Penrith), partnership with St Dalfour spreads, BBQ’s, Bunnings and others, selling Christmas cakes and Lions mints. They also hold raffles, dinners with guest speakers, sell ‘real’ Christmas trees, car parking and administration, ‘admission to venues’ management and donations. These are the reasons they are able to mark this occasion with a contribution to such wonderful community organisations.

School Struggles Is your child having difficulty learning at school? Perhaps they try to avoid going or misbehave in class because they can’t do the work. When a child is struggling, it can impact the whole family. Firstly, please know you and your child are not alone. Secondly, there are ways you can manage and improve the situation. It is important to grasp an understanding of which areas your child is experiencing difficulty. Children struggle academically for numerous reasons, so it is imperative to pinpoint the exact cause as the road to take is dependent on the root cause. This process may be lengthy, but it is best to cover all bases. The first port of call is your child’s school and often a report card will give a good indication of the areas that need addressing. Unfortunately, this information may give you the deficits but not explain the ‘why’. Attending the parent-teacher interviews and asking for more specific information will help guide your course of action. Often, teachers will refer students to the school learning support team for individual programs and integrated assistance in the classroom. In some cases, schools may recommend you take your child to see a specialist. Do not worry if your child’s teacher suggests this, it is useful to partake in assessments and appointments to exclude specific behavioural disorders, learning disabilities or impairments that are the underlying reason for issues at school. It may be appropriate to visit with speech therapists, occupational therapists, paediatricians, tutors, psychologists, audiologists and/or optometrists – depending on the recommendation of the school or the areas that require further investigation. This extensive list may seem overwhelming, but it is not intended as a mandatory list of what to do but rather a

recommendation of where to go to get further assistance. These services will often suggest ways you can support your child’s learning at home, ways the school can adjust learning to cater for your child’s individual needs and equip you with knowledge and tools to be an advocate for your child’s learning based on the information they obtain. With a significant understanding and appropriate strategies and services in place, your child has a greater chance of improvement and achieving his or her personal best.

Lions Raise ‘DonateLife’

Awareness

The Lions Club of Emu Plains are raising community awareness and understanding of organ and tissue donation, to encourage registrations on the Australian Organ Donor Register. This was highlighted during DonateLife Week recently. Today around 1,400 Australians and their families are desperately waiting for the call that a life-saving organ has become available. They are counting on the generosity of a donor and their family willing to give the gift of life. The gift of organ and tissue donation gives recipients a second chance at experiencing all the love, joy and adventure that life has to offer. Thousands of Australians are living their lives to the fullest because of the generosity of organ and tissue donors and their families. It is an especially heartfelt message that Emu Lion Jim Devine relates; “My granddaughter, Kyla, had a liver transplant at 5 months old. She’s now 10 years old, playing netball, doing gymnastics and swimming and going to the Australian Transplant Games at the Gold Coast in October. All this was only possible because of a selfless decision of a donor and their family, to donate an organ”. Lions encourage all Australians in their community to register to become an organ or tissue donor or spark positive change by talking about donation and sharing views with family and friends. You can no longer register your donation decision via your driver’s licence, as you need to join the national Australian Organ Donor Register at https://register.donatelife.gov.au/ decide. Registering to be a donor directly influences consent rates, with 90 per cent of families agreeing to donation proceeding when their loved one is registered. This drops to 40 per cent when the family is unaware of their loved one’s donation decision. Knowing what their loved one wanted brings comfort to families at a very difficult time.

Protecting the Eastern Water Dragon

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith recently joined volunteers of Conservation Volunteers Australia to announce that the Eastern Water Dragons (EWD) habitat in Penrith will benefit from a conservation grant of $5,000. The EWD is a protected species and is believed to be one of Australia’s oldest reptiles. They are often seen sunning themselves along the Great River Walk of the Nepean River. “CVA will use these funds to engage and educate the local community via conservation activities and to remove weeds along the Nepean River that cause havoc for the Eastern Water Dragons,” said Stuart Ayres. The CVA Eastern Water Dragon Habitat Regeneration is a partnership with Penrith City Council and aims to restore the habitat for the EWD through community engagement and weed treatments. Since the launch in April 2018, 3 project days have been undertaken with an additional 4 days planned in the future. “I’m delighted that this grant for CVA will assist in protecting this magnificent lizard species,” said Stuart Ayres. CVA thanks the Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, for his support and recognition of the importance of habitat for the iconic Eastern Water Dragon. This funding will add value to the current project, restore and improve another kilometre of river bank whilst providing additional community education and resources. To register for a Water Dragon project, contact Lucy at the CVA Penrith office on 4721 4625 or email WesternSydney@cva.org.au. Stuart Ayres MP (third left), Councillor John Thain, Penrith Mayor (second left) and Conservation Volunteers Australia members | Image Supplied

Grumpy Old Emus For many a rugby league player, the decision to retire from the game and hang up the boots can be one of the hardest calls to make. How do you give up a game that has been a part of your life for decades? Unless of course, you’re a ‘Grumpy Old Emu’. The Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Club Masters team, or the Grumpy Old Emus as they are affectionately known as, are a group of 25 dedicated local rugby league players. Aged from 35 to 58, they take part in a series of games each year. “The best part about playing Masters rugby league is the mateship. Meeting and playing alongside people who are passionate about the game just as much as I am is greatâ€? said Steve Weber, Emu Plains Masters Captain. The Emu Plains Masters team recently took part in the 2018 Masters Charity Shield against the Lower Mountains Junior Rugby League Club Masters team. The popular community match was held at Leonay Oval last month, with valuable funds raised for Beyond Blue. “We would like to thank G&C Mutual Bank, ANZ Bank and the Oriental Hotel for their sponsorship this season. We’d also like to say a big thank you to Kim Cowper and Ken Wiggens, from Lower Mountains Junior Rugby League Club, for helping to organise this year’s Masters Charity Shield eventâ€? explained Weber. You can still donate to Beyond Blue through Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Club. The next Emus Masters game will take place in Bathurst on the 11th of August. ď ˛ď€ Emu Plains Masters Captain Steve Weber | Image Supplied HEALTH MATTERS

Can NSAIDs Affect How Your Other Pain Killers Work? Some people with higher levels of pain may be taking multiple pain medications. As seen in my last article, longer term intake of NSAIDs can lead to the development of ‘tolerance’, which means the medication fails to reduce pain as well as it first did. Indeed, one animal experiment showed that the 7th dose of an NSAID is only 28% as effective as the first though blood concentrations of the drug remained the same. Development of tolerance, may lead to a patient increasing the frequency and/or dose of their pain medication. It may also see the patient seeking help from their primary care physician for stronger opioid based medications. And occasionally patients may be prescribed both. A recent patient with considerable lower back pain, detailed their current pain medication regimen as follows: 1. Opioids: a. Oxycontin (Oxycodone) -20mg twice daily, b. Plexia (Tapendadol) SRMR - 50mg once daily, c. Endone (Oxycondone) - 5mg as required 2. NSAIDs: a. Mobic (Meloxicam) - 15mg once daily 3. Panadol osteo (paracetamol) - 665mg once daily 4. Normison (Temazepam) - 10mg nightly, to allow sleep & deal with the anxiety of continual pain The patient had been on these medications for some months, yet was still in considerable pain. Patients taking longer term pain medications may want to know that: 1. NSAIDs enter the brain-stem from the blood & stop

transmission of pain from the body. Opioids do the same Tolerance to NSAIDs & opioids occurs rapidly Opioids and NSAIDs act on the same brain-stem pathway to block pain transmission 4. Initially NSAIDs & opioids, work together to kill pain more efficiently, however 5. NSAIDs & opioids when taken together for more than a few days, quickly create ‘cross-tolerance’. That is, the NSAID stops the opioid from working properly & vice versa, so neither drug works well 6. Increasing opioid dosage long-term may lead to a wellknown phenomenon called ‘opiod-induced hyperalgesia’. Here intake of the opioid pain killer may actually increase the original pain or may cause completely new pains unrelated to the original pain. Careful withdrawal from the drug may be required to reduce pain It’s pretty clear - short term NSAIDs & other pain medication are fine and effective for pain, however efficacy of longer term use is questionable & effects are complex. Patients should talk to their physicians. The Tasmanian government deprescribing guide recommends intermittent use, or cessation of NSAID if symptoms are controlled & stable. They advocate maximal use of nonpharmacological treatments such as massage, physiotherapy, exercise & heat packs. Finding & treating the root cause of pain is probably the best idea. If you’re suffering chronic pain why not give us a call at the clinic. 2. 3.

Writer Renee Garcia

As I write this, I can't help but think that the countdown is now on. While I enjoy winter immensely, there's always a point where Winter has worn out it's welcome... and if you're anything like me... that's about now! The countdown to Spring is just around the corner! Just think, warm days, the sun is shining, the flowers are beginning to blossom, the grass is returning to it's lush state... ahhhh, I can almost 'smell it'. Next month we promise to have a brilliant 'coupon feature' where your local favourite businesses put forward some pretty attractive offers, just as Spring has sprung! Look out for it next month. It's simple, but true "We rise by lifting others". For now, curl up under the blankie in the warmth of the heater, and enjoy your Community News.
