It all started with a post on social media by resident Jelena Giles in 2019 with support from the local community and has since gained momentum, with plans for the Emu Heights Community Garden a step closer to reality. As a high school science teacher working at Penrith Lakes Environmental Education Centre (PLEEC), Jelena is involved in the Kitchen Garden Program that is taught to primary and secondary schools and she is spearheading the campaign for the Community Garden. Immigrating to Australia from Bosnia in 1992, Jelena’s earliest memories are of her grandparent’s produce gardens. “I remember how much I loved spending time in the gardens with my grandparents, helping them and how it brought people together and kept them busy and happy during a very volatile time, as war was breaking out” reflected Jelena. Jelena’s research for the establishment of the Emu Heights Community Garden has been extensive, including consultation with Penrith City Council and Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services (NCNS). A site has been identified on Salerno Close in Emu Heights, adjacent to Emu Heights Neighbourhood Centre. With Council guidelines and processes currently being followed, it is hoped that a formal consultation will be undertaken soon, and a formal approval could be mid/ late this year. Permaculture Sydney West Group has over 400 seed varieties they have offered to the Community Garden, once it has started. “The produce will change seasonally, and it will be 100% up to the community as to what they would like to grow. I have already been asked about allocating a corner of the garden to a native edible garden. I have been asked by people who have their own veggie gardens if they could grow larger, more exotic produce. Some of the produce will be specific to workshops (eg from seed to sandwich). Wheat could be grown, harvested, and milled to make flour for bread to make a salad sandwich. There will be a children's garden with sensory plants and easy to grow and pick produce, planted in the boat from Blue Emu Children's Centre (adjacent to the garden). There are plans for an aquatic/ hydro garden as well” Jelena explained. The formation of a Gardening Focus Group (Committee) is being planned and will be discussed in the future. Materials such as tools and equipment will be needed for the Community Garden. If you can help, please contact them. For more information on Emu Heights Community Garden, email emuheightscommunitygarden@gmail.com or find them on Facebook. r

Outdoor Learning and Play for Emu Heights Public School

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith visited Emu Heights Public School as 2020 came to a close, to announce they had secured a grant of $119,614 through the NSW Government’s 2020 Community Building Partnership Program. Stuart Ayres said he was pleased to nominate Emu Heights Public School P & C’s application for this funding that will go towards construction of covered outdoor learning area (COLA). “Improving facilities for students both in and out of the classroom are key priorities and this upgrade will offer a shaded area for outside learning as well as a great play space no matter what the weather.” “This is a fantastic win for Emu Heights Public School and I look forward to seeing the finalised project.” Mr Owen Sargeant, EHPS P & C President said this is very exciting news and reflects the commitment to the school from the P & C. “A permanent shade structure will provide a great opportunity for the students and teachers to access opportunities outside of the classroom. Over time, it is proposed to add resources to the structure for greater usage by not only the school but also the community as a whole.” The Community Building Partnership program has funded more than 15,000 community projects since it commenced in 2009. Applications for the 2021 Program open in early 2021. For more information about the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program, visit www.nsw.gov. au/cbp

Locals Paying It Forward Emu Plains Pay It Forward is a local group that was recently formed, where members of the community can come together to help one another through donations such as food, clothing, or homewares. Paying it forward is when someone, who has received an act of kindness, does something kind for another instead of just accepting the original good deed. The group was created by Trisha McKenzie in December last year and she was soon joined by son William McKenzie and friend Emma Lee to assist her. “I am a member of the Blue Mountains – Penrith Pay it Forward Group and noticed that a lot of the items that are donated are located up the Mountains. I saw this as a challenge for members in the Emu Plains and Leonay area that didn’t have transport. I certainly think there is a need for this type of group in our area” explained Trisha to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. “I then put a post on the Emu Plains Community Group asking if people would be interested in a local Pay It Forward group. There was a lot of support and I then created the page” Trisha added. Emu Plains Pay It Forward now has a Facebook group which boasts over 400 members in just a few short months. The local community have been positive and supportive of the group. “Emma Lee from Emages Design offered to purchase groceries for someone in need and Sarah Sydir from The Aligned Hustler gave three presents of make-up to three Mums over Christmas. We also had a member donate 6 new toys in boxes on Christmas Eve” said Trisha. “Everyone at some stage in their lives needs a hand. We have a wonderful community and in the short time this page has been active this has been evident” she ended. For more information, search ‘Emu Plains Pay It Forward’ on Facebook.

PARENTS CORNER

Reflective Listening

If you search on the term “reflective listening” you will get many different ways of being a reflective listener. I find reflective listening a wonderful tool, but when I teach it to parents they say “that’s weird”. I tell them to go home and try it, and let me know how it’s going for them in a week’s time. Many parents come back and say “it really works”. For parents of adolescents they say that reflective listening has changed the relationship between them and their young person. Here is one way that I use reflective listening… Child: Jack didn’t play with me at lunchtime today. Parent: Oh, Jack didn’t play with you at lunchtime. (Same tone, same affect) Child: Nup Parent: Hmmm Child: He played soccer with Caleb instead. Parent: So, he played soccer with Caleb instead. Child: Yeah Parent: Yeah (with a big sigh) Long silence. Child: I think I’ll play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Parent: You’ve decided to play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Sounds like a plan. What do you notice about this interaction? The child solved his own problem. Notice the absence of the parent giving advice. Notice the absence of the parent asking more questions. Notice the presence of silence and space, and this is the magic of it. Our kids are so used to us giving advice and asking lots of questions that they quite often don’t talk about their stuff because they don’t want the fuss or the lecture. When you give kids lots of silence and space, they open up. Why? Because it is now emotionally safe to do so. Sometimes it takes a while for the child to get used to it, and the communications end quickly. Keep using it, they’ll get used to it. Kids are clever. They usually have some idea of how they might go about solving their problems. After a good while of reflective listening, if the child hasn’t generated his own solutions, you might want to ask “I wonder what you might do about it?” and do some more reflective listening. r

I’m Ready for You Big School! With 2021 now upon us, many kids around the community will be packing their bags in anticipation for their first day at big school. 5-yearold Lachlan Dalby is amongst one of those who will soon enter the gates and become a Kindergarten student. Lachlan will be attending Emu Heights Public School this year, joining his older brother who is going into year 4. “He is looking forward to wearing his new uniform and playing with his new friends. He’s keen to start and can't wait to learn at school” explained Kristen Dalby, Lachlan’s mother. Lachlan’s preparation for Kindergarten included attending Kids Place Children’s Centre for 3 days a week last year. “During that time, he was involved in their transition to school program that has taught him so much independence, resilience and self-regulation. He also attended the two school orientation days at the end of last year” said Kristen. The active youngster enjoys playing soccer and received the Golden Boot Award last season. Add to this a love of Hot Wheels cars, building Lego, riding bikes, scooters and drawing and you can see that he’s ready for his next challenge ahead. “I am nervous for Lachlan to start and I know he is more ready than I am! I’m sure there will be tears on his first day and they’ll be from me. We are excited to watch him grow and mature into an intelligent young man. I know that he will be able to learn and thrive in such a great school environment and be offered many opportunities” Kristen replied. So, what does Lachlan want to be when he grows up and finishes school? “He would love to be a builder that does handyman work. He loves building and being busy” smiled Kristen. Best of luck Lachlan and all the children starting and returning to school this year. v Feature Article [Cover + Above] Lachlan ready for the big day | Image: Kristen Dalby

The Police Cottage, Development Application Underway

The Police Cottage is an important local heritage feature of Penrith and its location adjacent to the Yandhai Nepean River Bridge provides a crucial link to the Regatta Park Precinct. Council’s vision is to bring the Police Cottage back to life, delivering a destinational dining offering, through an adaptive reuse of the property, transforming the site into a café and restaurant, with outside seating that offers diners magnificent views of the Nepean River. Constructed in 1908, The Police Cottage was the purposebuilt police station and residence for Emu Plains. It forms part of the historical development of the locality of Emu Plains and was designed by the Government Architects Branch. Significant heritage refurbishment is required to restore this building. Refurbishment will include façade restoration and replacement works to the verandas, roof, services upgrades, and internal refurbishments as well as an upgrade to the outdoor privy. The proposal includes a possible deck extension to create an outdoor dining area which will be shaded by the row of mature Jacaranda trees at the edge of the site and will ensure diners can capture the views of the iconic Yandhai Nepean Crossing and the Nepean River. With the cost estimated at more than $2.5 million, the project is seeking grant funding of $1 million as an investment contribution from Crown Lands NSW through the Crown Reserve Improvement Fund. The expected timeline for this project is: Conservation Management Plan complete June 2020 Development Application lodged late 2020 Construction commences early 2021 Construction complete mid-late 2022. The restoration of the Police Cottage is an opportunity for Council to preserve its historical value, enhance the gateway into Regatta Park and help realise the potential of the Regatta Park Precinct as a high-quality recreational and dining destination. r

Members are the Answer to 2021 Surprises The Lions Club of Emu Plains were working throughout 2020, despite COVID-19 restrictions and in some cases, they outperformed their previous year’s activities. The Club had record sales of Christmas cakes and puddings with strong contributions from local corporates and community groups. This included Bespoke Realty Group, The Royce, Tanti Financial Services, Nepean and Leonay Probus Clubs and contacts of Lions members. Although only selling the ‘normal’ amount of ‘real’ Christmas trees in December, they sold out in record time. The beneficiary was Ronald McDonald House at Nepean Hospital. The raffles at Lennox Shopping Village proved popular, but it was donations that outstripped raffle ticket sales. It appears locals recognised that Lions were doing their community work and they were happy to assist them. Bunnings BBQ’s were limited, and had to follow the COVID-19 protocols, but they provided a good return for a day’s effort. The year proved that despite operating under constraints, provided you have the determination and the manpower, you can still achieve your aims. So, manpower and womanpower are what the Emu Plains Lions Club is seeking. If you can spare some time and would like to help others who are less fortunate, please contact Memberships Manager, John Choma at home on 4735 5120 or jwchoma@bigpond.com or Secretary Sue Hunt on 4735 7789, mobile 0409 393711 or jacknsue@bigpond.com.

The Confronting Words of Jesus

Have you ever been told something you didn’t want to hear like, “you shouldn’t eat too much chocolate”, or “you should do regular exercise”? I think there’s a theme in mine! Here’s one from Jesus that we probably don’t like, ‘You cannot serve both God and money’ (it’s in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 6 verses 19 to 34). Why did he say it? He knows we need certainty and security. He also knows how we think about money. It buys what we need, but more than that, it buys security, it buys power, it buys the power to choose, the power to choose more, the power to rule my own life. And he knows we pour our lives into earning and storing it. But does it give us the certainty and security we long for? The things money can buy wear out or can be stolen away. They’re not as secure as we first think. They’re not as powerful as we often believe. In fact, Jesus’ confronting claim is we need to look somewhere else. We invest our money, but Jesus promotes an alternative investment plan. One where what matters doesn’t wear out, and can’t be taken away from us. He says, invest in treasures in heaven. Love what he loves. Love what God loves. Love God! Could it be that God would be a better master than chasing after money? I think the answer is found in the life of the one who said these confronting words. If you’d like to know more, why not read Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5 to 7) or check out church this year!

HEALTH MATTERS

Fermentation – Enhances Nutritive Value of Grains, for Strong Knee Cartilage Microorganisms beneficial for humans are known as probiotics. Whole grains are excellent food sources for probiotic microorganisms, encouraging their multiplication and continued residence in our large intestine. A ‘synbiotic’ is a synergistic-blend of prebiotics (e.g. grains) and probiotics. From previous articles you’ll remember cereal grains contain many antinutrients: digestive enzyme inhibitors, tannins, phytic acid. These components hamper our carbohydrate and protein digesting enzymes, and stop us digesting our food. They reduce vitamin & mineral absorption and are a big ‘reason for minerals deficiencies in’ humans. To avoid these problems, aboriginal cultures traditionally didn’t eat unfermented grains. Rather they soaked/sprouted and ground their grains, then added microbes to make a synbiotic flour mixture, and allowed this to stand often for two days or more, so that microbes could ‘ferment’ the grains. In the fermentation process, probiotic microbes multiply rapidly and spend all their time breaking-down / removing all the antinutritive factors in grains. Microbes also break down proteins (such as gluten) and carbohydrates (such a FOS that cause gas) to make them

harmless, and easy for us to digest and absorb. They also make completely new compounds that serve as healthy food sources for the cells lining our gut. They liberate minerals from phytates, liberate some vitamins and make many new ones for us. Fermentation is the most crucial process for lowering antinutrient content and enhancing nutritive value of cerealgrain foods. Modern cereal foods aren’t fermented (breakfast cereals). Bread makers often leave just 30min for carbon-dioxide production, but no time for true fermenting. You can make fermented grain products yourself. Just mix sprouted organic whole-grain flower with sourdough starter, let it ferment & rise for 48 hours at room temperature, before baking your own healthy bread. Or your rolled oats can be boiled then mixed with kefir yoghurt and even various fruits and nuts, allowed to ferment for 48 hours at room temperature, then placed in the fridge for storage & eaten cold in summer or warmed in winter. This way of eating grains is healthy and provides many nutrients including minerals such as zinc for strong knee cartilage. Eating a diet high in unfermented cereal grains can lead, to nutrient deficiency and weak knee cartilage and knee problems.

We've arrived at 2021, and there's no doubt it has arrived already with it's own challenges. We've all come to terms with the limitations introduced over the past 12 months as a result of COVID. With masks forming part of our 'everyday' wear, sanitizer available everywhere we turn and social distancing the 'new' norm. Despite this, 2021 will see plenty of new beginnings, wonderful stories and chapters that continue to evolve as we continue on this journey of life. It may be a bumpy ride with hurdles and various obstacles, but rest assured, we're in it together and we'll get through this! Look for the beauty in every moment, capture the magic, focus on the positives. It's our first edition of the year and we are so pleased to be back sharing wonderful local stories of true hope and inspiration! 'Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be'. Enjoy Your Community News.
