FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

What if? What if Jesus died and then rose again from the dead? News would spread, wouldn’t it. You can imagine the people who saw it happen told everyone they met. But then there would be all sorts of reactions. Some, hearing the news, would believe what they were told. Others, for any number of reasons, would doubt it. Maybe there would even be people who actively denied it. When you think about it, the reactions probably wouldn’t be that different to what we see happen again and again today to unexpected news. But if it did happen, what would it mean? Well, we’d have someone who could answer the age-old question, ‘What happens after death?’. On top of that, given Jesus predicted his death and resurrection, and it happened the way he said it would, you’d be pretty confident the other things he said would happen would happen too – things about judgement, things about God, things about rescuing you and me from death. In fact, it’s Jesus’ words at the grave side of a dead friend that ring in my ears as Easter comes around. He said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ (John 11:25-26). And then he raised his friend Lazarus back to life again. If Jesus rose from the dead, it could change your life, even should change your life. I am convinced he did, and this Easter we’ll be celebrating all that means, celebrating hope, celebrating meaning, celebrating life. U Image | www.unsplash.com

PET CARERS WANTED Do you LOVE pets?

When you think of popular children’s book authors, names like Roald Dahl, R.L Stine, Andy Griffiths and Aaron Blabey come to mind. Local children’s author and mother Amelia McInerney may very well make that list one day, thanks to her first book The Book Chook, which was released and launched at Café 2773 in Glenbrook last month. “Four and a half years ago, I had a 'light bulb moment' just after my third child was born; that I wanted to write picture books! I slowly began learning about writing by trawling the internet and reading books on writing for kids. My eldest was six at the time, so I had been reading picture books for that many years, and I loved them” Amelia told the Emu and Leonay Gazette. With four more separate picture books coming out this year and next, The Book Chook is the first book that Amelia wrote and was illustrated by Connah Brecon and published by Scholastic. The Book Chook is about a chicken having an existential crisis in a picture book. It's a funny, rhyming story about a panicky but lovable chicken called Ray, who freaks out when he discovers that he's not actually a real chicken, but just a drawing of one in the book. The themes within the book are being true to yourself, belonging, and home. Amelia’s next book Bad Crab will be out in July. It was illustrated by Philip Bunting, who did CBCA Picture Book of the Year Honour book, Mopoke. Her agent has just submitted two more finished picture books and she is currently working on a junior fiction series for 7/10-year olds. “I love everything about writing kids' books. The thrill of getting a new idea, and then working from start to finish and seeing where the story goes. I don't plan my books out, I just start writing them. I love writing in rhyme. Launching my first book was exciting, and I've started visiting schools and preschools. It's so fun to read to the kids and talk with them about writing. I love making fun books for kids (and their parents and teachers!) to read” ended Amelia. Fore more information about Amelia McInerney, visit www. ameliamcinerney.com. Elsa is Hitting them for Six! Local teenage student Elsa Hunter has the cricketing world at her feet, having just returned from overseas representing the Malaysian Women’s T20 Cricket Team in the World Cup qualifiers recently. The talented cricketer, who plays club cricket for Emu Plains and grade cricket for Parramatta, was selected to play in the Malaysian Women’s T20 Cricket Team at the age of just 13. “The Chief Operating Officer of Malaysian Cricket saw Elsa’s cricket stats and contacted me in December last year about getting a video of her. She was asked to trial in Kuala Lumpur before a T20 tournament in Thailand in January. After the tournament, we were asked if we would allow her to play in the World Cup qualifiers in February, whilst Elsa was still 13 years old” said Jim Hunter, Elsa’s father, to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. When asked what the highlights were from her World Cup qualifier T20 matches, Elsa smiled and said, “Scoring 42 not out to win the game again Kuwait was good. I enjoyed the team environment with the girls in the team as well as meeting and making friends from other countries”. “Elsa has met girls from other countries that she would never meet thanks to her opportunities in cricket. She has played against Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Indonesia, UAE and Kuwait” added Jim. The schedule for the Malaysian T20 team has not been decided yet, however it will have to fit with her school commitments. She would love to help Malaysia climb the world rankings and enthuse other girls that anything is possible if you try your best. “My end goal is to play for NSW and Australia” she said. “We are very proud of Elsa as a person and amazed at her natural ability to adapt to cricket at such a high level so young. It is great to see the pride in her from her family living in Malaysia” ended Jim. U Elsa in her Malaysian Women’s T20 Cricket Team uniform | Image: Malaysia Cricket

PARENTS CORNER

Guest article by Professor Matt Sanders

Single Parenting Single parents often say they feel it’s more difficult to discipline a child without a partner’s support. But it’s very important to approach discipline in exactly the same way as if you were parenting with someone else. It’s vital to have a game plan and be consistent. That means setting house rules that don’t fluctuate. It may surprise some people to know that children like boundaries. Kids very easily become comfortable with the familiarity of a routine at bedtime, at mealtimes or when it’s time to get out of the house in the morning. Positive and predictable routines mean discipline will become much easier. Life won’t have to be full of big battles over little issues! Another worry many single parents express is the lack of a significant male or female influence in the household. Mothers may feel this more keenly when they’re raising a son alone, as many fathers do when they’re raising a daughter. It’s always important to encourage your child to have role models and mentors. Role models can show children how to behave, and what is the appropriate thing to do. So, single parents may want to look for opportunities for their children to get to know and have other men or women in their life. It could be a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a trusted family friend or a sports coach. Having someone who will serve a mentoring role throughout the child’s life can be a great example to – and support for – the child. Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. For more information go to www.triplep-parenting.net or http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/. If you are looking for a computer-based course, Triple P Online is available for the cost of $80, the link is https://www.triplep-parenting.uk.net/uk-en/ find-help/triple-p-online/?cdsid=bn1kpaf0u26mvdum7q6n7up254

School Holiday Struggles As the school holidays are fast approaching, parents are considering what options they have regarding care and entertainment for their children during the two weeks they are not at school. For many families, the option to take leave from work is not a viable one and they are left to find appropriate options that are suitable for their family’s circumstance. Families with one or both parents at home may struggle with affording entertainment options for their children and will be on the hunt for free or lowcost ideas of things to do with their children. Some families with the financial means and physical ability to be around during the holidays may be considering alternative ways to entertain their children. Whichever situation your family is in, there is a solution and the answer is: playdates. A playdate is simply an organised time for two or more children to spend time with one another. They may happen at someone’s home or at a public area such as a park or play centre. If a playdate is one-to-one, it can strengthen friendships and establish strong bonds outside of the school environment. The best part is that there is no age limit. Playdates might seem like a simplistic answer to the woes of school holiday struggles, but they can certainly meet the needs of all families if you bind together to create the ‘village’ often talked about in parenting. Social interaction in a variety of settings is vital in developing a child’s sense of belonging, enhances communication and enables for character development. By allowing your children to visit a friend’s house, they gain additional insight into the world around them and learn to cooperate. So, parents if you have the means to invite your child’s friend over for a playdate these holidays, do it! Not only will your children have the chance to play with peers they like to spend time with, it will aid them in becoming more independent and confident as they mature. Empowering Girls and Young Women Did you know there are over 10 million Girl Guides worldwide? Girl Guides participate in many exciting activities and challenges each year. Emu Plains Girl Guides, which formed in Glenmore Park 18 years ago, moved to Emu Plains just over a year ago where they now meet at the Guide Hall. Emu Plains Girl Guides is made up of Junior Guides (7 to 10 years) and Guides (10 to 14 years). Warimoo Senior Guides (14 to 18 years) recently joined the district too. “We participate in great outdoor events such as a camp in Centennial Park for Junior Guides in April and a sleepout under the stars at Taronga Zoo in August. The most exciting event this year is the Senior Guides travelling to Mexico for a Day of the Dead camp at Our Cabana, the Mexican Girl Guide World Centre” explained Emu Plains Girl Guides’ Thea Hams. The local group are already planning their trip to Mexico, with fundraising events underway. “We have some great paint-along nights for the Mexican trip nicknamed "Cheezels and Easels" Night. We have so much fun following a painting tutorial by one of the Guide leaders and making our own masterpieces, where we provide all the equipment - even the Cheezels! You can check out our upcoming theme nights such as Harry Potter and Star Wars at www.facebook.com/cheezelsandeasels. We'd love to see you there” wowed Thea. “The friendships I've made through Guiding and the difference I've made in some girls lives is truly overwhelming. I started as a parent volunteer to help my daughter’s unit but was encouraged by my friend Sam to join as a leader. I am now enjoying opportunities like the Mexico trip - things I never could have imagined, all with the support of my fellow Guides and its incredible!” she continued. Emu Plains Girl Guides currently have a waiting list for their Junior Guide unit, however they do have a few vacancies for their Guide unit. They always welcome enquiries for new members. For more information on Girl Guides NSW, go to https://www.girlguides-nswact.org.au or look up Emu Plains Girl Guides on Facebook. U Cheezels and Easels Night | Image: Samantha Young

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

How does too much Paracetamol cause Liver toxicity? Paracetamol toxicity is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the Western world, including Australia, and New Zealand. So how exactly does it cause liver damage? Let’s take a look at what happens when you take a normal dose of paracetamol. The drug is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the blood stream (Farrell 2018). It’s transported from the blood into liver cells. Liver cells contain enzymes that pick up each paracetamol molecule and stick a sugar group or a sulphate group onto the side of the molecule. Paracetamol molecules with these added sugar or sulphate groups are no longer active as a pain killer, and are non-toxic and very water soluble allowing them to be passed back into the blood stream, transported to the kidneys & eliminated in the urine (See diagram). When a somewhat larger paracetamol dose is taken, the above two enzymes become overwhelmed. This forces the excess paracetamol molecules to overflow from the normal pathways. Paracetamol that overflows is converted in liver cells to a new and highly toxic & reactive molecule called ‘NAPQI’. But before NAPQI can do any damage another back up set of enzymes comes to the rescue taking every NAPQI and sticking a funny molecule called ‘glutathione’ onto it. This renders NAPQI harmless & water soluble, allowing elimination via the kidneys and urine. Emergency room Doctors actually give a compound called NAC to paracetamol overdose patients to help liver cells make glutathione to detoxify NAPQI. If a very large paracetamol dose is taken, or a relatively high dose over a prolonged period, liver cells end up running out of ‘glutathione’ molecules to detox NAPQI which means that this backstop detox pathway no longer works. This leaves a lot of highly toxic NAPQI inside liver cells to do damage and here’s where problems occur. When NAPQI is allowed to roam free inside liver cells it binds to liver cell proteins and stops many from working. In particular NAPQI binds to proteins in mitochondria – the energy producing organelles within your liver cells – that produce ‘most’ of the cell’s energy. When mitochondria stop working properly, they produce large amounts of free radicals which further damage cell proteins. Eventually the cell loses its ability to produce energy, and this leads to cell DNA breakdown, and finally the whole cell ‘explodes’ leaking toxic contents into the tissue spaces around it and into the blood stream. When this happens to ‘many cells’ at the same time doctors can measure increased

levels of liver enzymes in your blood. Thus, it is the excess NAPQI that leads to hepatocellular damage & death, and eventually to hepatic failure. Similar enzymatic reactions occur in organs other than the liver also, such as the kidney, and can contribute to some degree of organ dysfunction in other areas of the body. If you have ongoing chronic musculoskeletal pain, physical therapy such muscle elongation therapy can often help, so why not call us at the clinic to discuss your issues.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

Our Commitment to Give Back

At District Gazette, we have chosen to align ourselves with a charity that is very close to our hearts. We support the Lung Foundation Australia, by giving a percentage of all advertising revenue and hosting fundraising events to support Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, through their IPF Program. This month is all about chooks, books, sixes, cheezels and easels, to name just a few! We're on the cusp of Easter, School Holidays and remembering those who served and died as Anzac Day approaches. Did you survive the social-media meltdown last month? Thankfully, the Gazette powers on without the reliance of internet connectivity - you'll always find us and the details of local businesses aplenty neatly tucked away in your letterbox, the first week of the month. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Go easy on yourself. Whatever you do today, let it be enough.'
