It’s a new year, with thousands of children right across the country lacing up their shoes, putting on their backpacks, showing their best smiles and walking through the gates together with their families to start their first day of Kindergarten. It’s a day of nervous anticipation filled with tears and laughter. For the Macura family, 4-year-old Clover will start Kindergarten at Emu Plains Public School this year. What makes Clover’s journey even more remarkable is that she will continue that same family tradition at the local school that was first started by her Aunty Lee back in 1981. Clover’s Dad Dale soon followed at Emu Plains Public School in 1986, whilst Lee’s children Kelsie, Cooper and Emerson also attended. Clover joins her sister Willow who started last year. When asked what she was looking forward to most about starting school, Clover beamed “meeting new friends and learning new things”. She also mentioned that when she finishes school, she would one day like to become a painter as she enjoys painting pictures. For Clover’s parents Dale and Amelia Macura, it will not only be an emotional day but a happy one at the same time as she waves goodbye to begin her time at the school that has already shaped her family’s lives. “I have loved watching my children and now grandchildren go to the same school. It’s community based with caring and friendly teaching staff who make everyone most welcome” said Liz Macura, Clover’s Grandmother. We would like to wish all the children in the local community starting school for the first time the best of luck on their amazing journeys ahead. U

Back 2 Church The new year brings new opportunities, as well as shining a fresh light on old opportunities. One member of our family is taking on a new job, another is having their first year out of school. And for Louise and I, with the kids almost all grown up, we’re rediscovering travelling to places, able to chat on our own, and kicking about the house too, on our own. It’s a good thing we like each other! What new opportunities have you thought about tackling this year, or what old opportunities should you consider looking at again? Here’s a suggestion for you. Why not check out a Church? Some of us have never been to one, and so all we know about it is from what we’ve watched, or been told, or imagined. Some of us have been before, or went to a Church school, or just slipped out of the habit. And maybe if you go you’ll find it’s not like you expect it to be at all. But do you know the reason we suggest people come to Church? It’s because every week you can hear the life changing news that Jesus is Lord. Last year we welcomed old people, and young people, and in the middle people to our Church. And it didn’t matter whether they’d been before, or been somewhere else, or never been to a Church, we were able to welcome them the same. And you would be welcome too. If the good news about Jesus is even half what it is cracked up to be, it’s worth your time to check it out for the first time, or let the new year shed a fresh light on it. That’s why we’re running

Back 2 Church Sunday this first Sunday of February. You can check out the details on Facebook or on our website. But then too, you can come Back 2 Church any Sunday, and know there is a place for you.

PARENTS CORNER

“If It’s Predictable, It’s Preventable” I don’t know who came up with this phrase, but it’s so true. If everyday (or fairly frequently), you have a kid that does the same thing over and over again. Whether it’s getting angry, teasing her brother, forgetting to hang the towel up after a bath, etc. That’s not a ‘problem’. That’s an opportunity. An opportunity to teach a new skill. What is the child’s skill deficit? And how can you teach him or her to learn a new skill? Now, when I ask parents these questions, the first thing they try to come up with is a consequence for the behaviour. How can I punish the child for that behaviour? But teaching opportunities, are not about making a child feel bad, withdrawing privileges, and creating stress. It’s about the parent-child relationship, connection, believing in the innate goodness and capacity of your child, focusing on the positives, communication, coming up with creative solutions, and collaboration. And at the same time role modelling those same skills. For example, if you want your child to learn to manage his temper, you have to role model being able to calm down when you have strong feelings. To teach any skill well, you have to move from reactive’ to proactive’. The negative cycle of conflict is unhelpful, it clearly isn’t working because it is still a problem. • How can you change the interactions, so that things are calmer and you can focus more on the positive? • How can you reframe your view of the child from ‘naughty’ or ‘bad’ to ‘s/he just doesn’t have the skills s/he needs at the moment’? • What strategies will you use to guide, nurture, support, and encourage your child to learn new skills? Make a plan. Talk to the child about it. Get some agreement. Consider his/her views and ideas. Put the plan into action. Be consistent! Monitor your progress every day, and review your plan after a week. Is the behaviour getting smaller or bigger? What’s working? What’s not working? Tweak the plan and keep going. And remember, that it is not simply enough to teach a child a skill once and assume that s/he can do it. You have to be kindly persistent. You are the adult, and you are supposed to be stronger, wiser, and kind.

GAME REVIEW

..... Arms

Arms is a boxing game. There are 15 characters and each of them are unlike one another. There are a lot of mods in the game and the modes you can play are grand prix, versus and party match. In grand prix mode, you can choose your character (between 1-15) and your combination of arms, then you’re ready to fight. You battle 10 other fighters in a row and if you win all 10 matches, you become the champion. In versus mode, this is the perfect mode to play in if a friend wants to play with you. This is my favourite mode. Basically, there are different places to battle. Instead of playing against the computer, you play against your friends. Party match mode is where you and a few other people battle off like a tournament and the most points win. There are also 42 different arms that you can get to put on your person. Some of them bounce, spin, protect and explode. You can earn coins to buy new arms as you go. I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 8 years. I rate it 8 out of 10 (only available on Nintendo Switch) and THANKS Grandma, it's a top game!

The Complete Educational Package at St Paul’s Grammar School I consider St Paul’s Grammar School to be the leading school in Western Sydney, due to its unparalleled choice of subjects and extensive range of cocurricular offerings. However, school rankings of academic success may not include St Paul’s, despite very strong and consistent results. St Paul’s offers a diverse HSC curriculum, allowing students to specialize their study to excel in areas of interest. 2018 HSC Dux, Matthew Seckold, tailored his course to focus on his strengths of English and Humanities. HSC Runner-Up, Albi Benjamin, chose Mathematics and Physics, which complimented his areas of interest. Noah Godsell, who has been accepted to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, included Dance and Extension Music. St Paul’s also offers the International Baccalaureate (IB), globally recognised as perfect preparation for further study and careers in today’s world. All St Paul’s students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 10 study IB programmes. In Years 11 and 12, students choose between the HSC and the IB Diploma as their final school qualification. The IB Diploma focuses on preparation for university, developing critical thinking and research skills essential for tertiary success. Half of St Paul’s senior students complete the IB and as results are released three weeks after the HSC, they are not included in academic school comparisons websites based on the HSC. Combining HSC and IB Diploma results, St Paul’s typically has 30% of Year 12 students rank in the top 10% of academic results and 50% of students achieve ATARs above 80, significantly ahead of other local non-selective schools. We are also proud of the fact that challenging opportunities are provided to students for whom a high ATAR is not a goal. We celebrate their success as well. St Paul’s offers the complete educational package to meet the needs of each and every student. U Antony Mayrhofer and students | Image Supplied. A beautiful adaptation of a movie classic, using a light touch to illuminate the deepest and most important expressions of compassion and human decency, Dan Gordon’s brilliant rewriting of 1983’s blockbuster film takes the theatre audience through 23 years of mother-daughter conflict and angst. There is not a wasted word. Director Anthony Brown is a resident of Leonay, who as a young man remembers the famous movie which starred Shirley Maclaine, Jack Nicholson and Debra Winger. Anthony was fortunate to meet Shirley Maclaine in the 1980’s and got her autograph. Mr. Brown says, “Shirley Maclaine was everything I imagined when I met her, and I told her how much I loved her performance in Terms of Endearment which delighted her”. Playing the classic role Shirley Maclaine won her only Academy Award in is well known Australian actress Oriana Panozzo. She is best known for her role in Sons and Daughters. This is the first time in Australia this production will have been staged and Ruby Productions are very excited. They have a stage production of Terms of Endearment to give many laughs and food for thought about family values. You don’t want to miss this show! Terms of Endearment has been adapted for the stage by Dan Gordon and directed by Anthony Brown. The performance dates are Saturday February 2nd and 9th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm. Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $20 concession, $35 at the door. To book tickets, go to www.trybooking.com/445717. To reserve show only, phone 4735 5422. Back to School Basics The school holidays are officially over and parents across the state are breathing a sigh of relief as their children head back to school. But now, as the official 2019 school year has commenced it is time to reintroduce daily routines and expectations or begin implementing new ones that suit your current circumstances and needs. Whether you have a child transitioning to school, a change of work arrangements, a teenager moving into high school or have moved and need to accommodate a new job and school into the mix – there are some simple ways to manage the back to school bedlam. 1. Be organised. Talk about expectations of bedtimes, technology usage and homework. Allocate jobs to each family member. Try to ensure uniforms and lunches are prepared before the day (even just the night before) to make the morning routine run smoothly. Label all school belongings and have a designated tidy space for bags. Prepare an area for homework with adequate equipment. 2. Create a daily and weekly schedule or timetable. You might like to do this for each family member and include household tasks, extracurricular activities, homework and library/sport days. Also, have a large calendar displayed in a central position in your home. Encourage all your family members to check the calendar before making plans and write any special occasions, appointments, school holidays at the beginning of each year. 3. Regularly ‘check-in’ with your child’s teacher. Many working parents feel disconnected to the school because they very rarely get to pick up or drop off. A way to combat this is to connect to the class teacher via email or through any school messaging platform once or twice a term just to touch base and check that your child is going okay, but also to let the teacher know of any concerns you may have. Open lines of communication are a must for a good homeschool relationship. 4. Allow for changes – be flexible. Not everything will go according to plan so roll with it. 5. Get enough sleep (that includes you too Mum and Dad). Try not to overcommit to too many evening activities. 6. Ask for help if you need it. It takes a village to raise a child so find your tribe and create your network. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance with drop offs and pickups. When you are able, offer the same things to others. We are all in this together.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Paracetamol for Osteoarthritis & Back Pain – How Effective is it? Paracetamol (acetaminophen) has been used in Australia for pain relief and fever since the 1950's. It is safe and effective when taken as directed on the label. Harvard medical school suggests taking paracetamol to provide: • ‘week-long “holidaysâ€? from your Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)’ as it • ‘Relieves pain without increased heart attack or stroke risk’ or the other NSAID-intake associated health risks. I occasionally see patients who are taking relatively high dose paracetamol for extended periods. A recent patient had been taking 4000mg paracetamol daily for over 3 years for knee pain, yet the patient rated her knee pain at 8-9 out of ten. Another recent patient with ongoing high levels of pain was taking the same 4000mg dose of paracetamol daily, plus Mobic 15 mg daily, Endone 5mg (tid) & Lyrica 75mg (bid) for back, glut and leg pains, also for an extended period. Both patients still had considerable pain even on medications. This is common. While Paracetamol, when used appropriately remains an excellent medicine, there are however some facts from the medical literature that patients should consider and talk to their doctor about when taking longer term higher dose paracetamol for pain relief. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration advises Australians taking paracetamol to: 1. ‘Always follow the directions on the label. 2. Take the recommended dose. 3. Don't take paracetamol for more than a few days at a time unless specifically advised to by a doctor or pharmacist’ A 2015 Systematic review and meta-analysis in BMJ concluded that “high qualityâ€? evidence suggests that paracetamol: 1. ‘Is ineffective for reducing pain intensity or improving quality of life short term in people with low back pain, 2. paracetamol provides a significant, but not clinically important, effect on pain and disability in the short term for hip or knee osteoarthritis, 3. adverse events, serious adverse event, or study withdrawal was similar to placebo, 4. resulted in patients being nearly four times more likely to have abnormal results on liver function tests - the clinical importance of this effect is uncertain’. This increased rate of abnormal liver function tests certainly suggest that acetaminophen may negatively affect the liver. Indeed, acetaminophen toxicity in the US, has replaced viral hepatitis as the most frequent cause of acute liver failure. A

recent Medsacpe article on Acetaminophen toxicity states that a single ingestion of 7,500mg -10,000 mg, represents the minimum toxic dose that poses significant risk of severe hepatotoxicity for adults. This possibly toxic dose is just double the dose taken by the 2 patients above, and so it may not be too difficult for a patient seeking more pain relief to unwittingly take enough paracetamol to lead to acute liver damage. You may be asking ‘is paracetamol safe’? The answer is yes, if the drug is used at correct dose. But risks exist even with safe medicines as shown by a 2001 study on acetaminophen use. At medium to high, or excessively high dose; or if acetaminophen is taken at such a dose for extended periods, risk of adverse events increases. We’ll look at some of these and why they occur next article.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

New Veterinarian Maya joined the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital team in

January 2019. Maya recently graduated from the University of Sydney with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Growing up in both New York and Israel, Maya knew she wanted to be a vet from age 4, according to her parents. While still new to her career, Maya has a keen interest in internal medicine, wildlife and exotics, and has previously completed a research Masters on the reproductive physiology of the Tammar wallaby. Maya lives with two dogs, four cats, two cockatiels and her husband. Maya enjoys hiking, camping and putt putt golf on her days off.

Maternity Leave for 2 Staff Rachel, one of our veterinary nurses, is due February 2019 with her first child. Theresa, one of our veterinarians, is due March 2019 with her second child. We wish them best of luck through this special journey. We are all very excited for the new arrivals! Check out our Facebook page for baby updates. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Emu Sports Club and Leonay Golf Club Celebrate 50th Anniversary Emu Sports Club and Leonay Golf Club will celebrate 50 years of incorporation on 17th May 2019 and organisers have planned a major Golf event and a Celebration Dinner to mark the occasion. Construction of Leonay Golf Course commenced in 1937 and the Club opened in 1939. Operations ceased during the war years, but the Club re-opened in 1946 and later became known as Penrith Golf Club. The course again lapsed in 1964, when Penrith Golf Club moved to its current location on the Northern Road. In 1968 Leonay Golf Club, as we know it today, commenced operations and was Licensed through the Emu Plains Sports Club in 1969. Many local residents and businesses have been in or around Leonay since 1969 and the organising committee is appealing for memorabilia, including photos, articles, mementoes or even memories which can either be put in a Presentation Booklet or put on show at the Anniversary Dinner. Anyone with such memorabilia is asked to contact Leonay Golf Cub Vice President Les Knox on 0418 692675 or by email at lesknox@optusnet.com.au. Alternatively, they can contact organising committee member Noel Rowsell at photoshoot@bigpond. com. U Emu Sports Club | Image: Emu Sports Club
