Local Artists exhibit at Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest Winter is here, and it is time to find more indoor activities to nurture our soul during the colder months. Visit Penrith Regional Gallery’s Winter Exhibition suite and engage in the work of local artists Vicky Browne, John South and women artists from Garage Graphix, or visit the main gallery for Black Mist Burnt Country. Blue Mountains artist Vicky Browne’s Cosmic Noise is a sculptural installation accompanied by an orchestration of barely audible sound. Her work suggests an astronomical explosion, the big bang, that leads us to the celestial notion that life exists throughout the universe, held within space dust, meteoroids and far-flung planets. Local Aboriginal artist John South’s video installation PossumSkin Cloak is evocative of the transition between waking up, leaving the night dream and awakening to a sky world in the clouds. His work portrays the Aboriginal mythology of the entwined mother earth and father clouds to form the mist falling upon the protective possum skin cloaks. Black Mist Burnt Country is an award-winning national touring exhibition featuring art from over 30 Indigenous and nonIndigenous artists commemorating the British atomic tests at Maralinga, Emu Field and Montebello Islands in the 1950s. A variety of interactive elements will enable visitors to gain insight into the social, political and environmental impacts, while placing the Australian atomic tests in the context of the nuclear arms race and present-day realities. Garage Graphix was a community art, design and screen printing workshop, based in Mount Druitt from 1981 until 1998. Established by arts workers active in the women’s movement, Garage Graphix employed artists and cultural workers to develop, train and mentor local community, students and

artists in the collaborative production of posters. As seen in this exhibition, posters articulated and promoted a range of concerns and issues including education, health, environment and pollution, Aboriginal rights, deaths in custody and women’s rights. Featuring long term Garage Graphix arts workers Alice Hinton-Bateup, Maxine Conaty, Marla Guppy, Karen Vance and Lin Mountstephen, the exhibition offers audiences a chance to consider the important role these women played in demanding a better life, greater opportunities and in many cases equal rights. Make sure you find time to rug up and step out to visit Penrith Regional Gallery and stay for a coffee or to sample the winter menu at Café At Lewers. Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest is located at 86 River Road Emu Plains and is open 9am to 5pm, seven days a week. Entry is free.

Custom Built Homes, Granny Flats & Additions by Conservation Volunteers Australia recently visited Emu Heights Day Care Centre to talk ‘habitat’. Pre-schoolers were delighted to see and meet some Giant Rainforest Snails (native to Southern QLD and Northern NSW), pass around snail shells and talk about what it means to have a ‘home’. Children also identified leaves, sticks and hollows around their home and the Day Care Centre as ‘good homes’ for native wildlife. David Jones, Ecologist and Conservation Volunteers Team Leader stated, “It’s great to see how keen the kids are to talk and learn about the environment. As this next generation grows up, their actions will greatly affect the health of critically endangered ecosystems here in Western Sydney”. Conservation Volunteers is currently undertaking work along the Nepean River, reviving habitat for Eastern Water Dragons, in collaboration with Penrith Council. Work involves treating invasive weeds, such as Balloon Vine, to allow native species to regenerate in the area, improving the health of the Nepean River and Lapstone Creek. Not-for-profit, Conservation Volunteers Australia offer opportunities for community members to join conservation projects across the Nepean Hawkesbury region. Projects focus on regenerating habitat, to improve biodiversity and run on both weekdays and weekends. Children 7 years and older are welcome with parental supervision. If you would like to help your child connect with nature or would like to contribute to saving endangered plant and animal species here in Western Sydney, contact Lucy on 0404 828911 or email westernsydney@cva.org.au.  Ecologist David Jones | Image: Lucy Haynes

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Fear and Love in Parenting There are two base emotions – fear and love. How do fear and love play out in your parenting? Fear-based parenting views the child as “bad”. Love-based parenting views your child as worthy of your love, time, and attention. Fear-based parenting views the child as “manipulative and attention seeking”. Love-based parenting recognises that all behaviour arises from a need (physical, emotional, intellectual), and sometimes behaviour is a way of attempting to make a connection with a parent. Fear-based parenting emphasises the need for punishment. Love-based parenting emphasises the need for guidance, education, and relationship. Fear-based parenting seeks revenge or payback for a child’s behaviour. Love-based parenting seeks belonging and connection for the child. Fear-based parenting notices “bad” behaviour. Love-based parenting notices mistaken behaviour. When we move from fear-based parenting to love-based parenting we move from ME (parent’s agenda) to WE (parent and child together). It is no longer us versus them. In fear-based parenting the parent reacts. In love-based parenting the parent responds. In fear-based parenting the child’s feeling are dismissed. In love-based parenting the child’s feelings are acknowledged. Fear-based parenting focuses on the person and love-based parenting focuses on the behaviour. Through fear-based parenting, the child experiences shame, which can last a lifetime. Through love-based parenting, the child experiences guilt, which is short-term. In fear-based parenting, the parent feels shame, blame, and guilt. In love-based parenting, the parent tries to be real. In fear-based parenting, the parent burdens the child with his or her own feelings, demands an insincere apology, and does not apologise for his or her own mistaken behaviour. In lovebased parenting, the parent talks about OK/not OK for the self and child, seeks relationship repair, admits wrongdoing, and role models saying sorry. Fear-based parenting values the child for what he or she does. Love-based parenting values the child for who she or he is. In fear-based parenting, the parent persuades, nags, begs, yells, and hits. In love-based parenting, the parent is comfortable with setting safe limits and boundaries for children. In fear-based parenting, the parent is operating at a head level. In love-based parenting, the parent is operating from a heart level.

From Primary to High School: How to Ease the Transition

High school is a daunting prospect for many pre-teens ready to embark on the next stage of their schooling. For some parents, the disbelief that their pride and joy is almost a teenager goes hand in hand with the anxiety of them starting high school. If this is you, you can rest assured that you are not the only one experiencing these feelings, with studies showing the transition to high school is an exciting yet critical change that leaves some families overwhelmed by unfamiliarity. Most high schools provide transition programs, in the second half of Year Six, which help to alleviate concerns and ensure that students feel a sense of familiarity and support in their upcoming new environment. Students requiring extra specialist support usually have access to extra transition sessions and important information about each student is shared between the primary and high school.

Whilst schools take these measures to ensure a smooth transition, some students and their families remain consumed by the impending change. The good news, however, is that there are ways in which you can assist in preparing your child for high school that are proven to be effective. Here are some practical ways in which you can help ease the transition: 1. Organise for your child to visit the school and become familiar with the environment as well as practicing the route your child will take to school each day. If they are catching the bus, perhaps take a drive to the bus stop and follow the route to and from school. This will reduce anxiety and create familiarity around the school and how to get there. 2. Facilitate opportunities for your child to get to know other children who will also be attending the same school. Seek out other families in the same position and team up – check out to see if there are any existing social groups in the school and get involved. 3. Encourage your child to be more independent by giving them the opportunity to make decisions, manage daily chores and complete homework. They could devise a schedule or timetable with you to follow and then self-manage the tasks. 4. Listen to your child and give them the opportunity to speak freely about how they feel throughout the process. Communicate any major concerns to either the high school or their current primary school and seek help in supporting your child, if required.  Progress Transitioning to high school can be overwhelming for some students | Image: www.pexels.com. New Child Care Package From 2 July 2018, the Federal Government’s new child care package will take effect. The Government is making a lot of changes, including rolling two benefits into one new subsidy. Parents and carers will need to complete a new online application form and pass the new eligibility requirements in order to receive any subsidy after 2 July. Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain said there is a lot in this package that will be great for working families. “Most working families will end up with access to more care under this package, and that is a really good thing,” Cr Thain said. “However, I have genuine concerns that some parts of the new package will result in the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children being further disadvantaged and cut-off from the education they need,” Cr Thain continued. “There’s a wealth of research that shows children from disadvantaged and vulnerable families benefit most from high quality early childhood education, and yet for some reason this group will lose out in this package. “All children are entitled to quality early childhood education to set them up for life-long learning and success, regardless of their parent’s circumstances. I am deeply disappointed and disheartened that the most vulnerable Australian children will ultimately lose out in this package,” Cr Thain said. For those families who do qualify for subsidised care under the new package, there are also important changes to the hourly rate cap. From 2 July, all care must fall under the hourly rate cap or it won’t be fully subsidised. That means anyone paying over the cap will have to pay the difference out of their own pocket. There are a lot of providers whose rates exceed the cap, so parents and carers should check that now. Council owns and operates 31 centres and preschools across the Penrith Local Government Area, which offer competitive fees, highly qualified staff and leading-edge teaching methods and programs. All of Council’s centres have fully subsidised places available now. You can find out more about the new child care package, how it affects your family, and how to access Council’s fully subsidised care at: penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/childcarePenrith.

Local Director’s Production of Arsenic and Old Lace Arsenic and Old Lace is one of the finest comedies of multiple murder and was the play that put black comedy well and truly back on the theatrical map. It tells the story of two charming and gentle old ladies who poison their poor, orphan lodgers to save them from the sorrows of this world. This production is being directed by Leonay local Anthony Brown. “Who can ever forget the classic film of this which starred Cary Grant” Mr Brown said. “As a young boy, I recall watching the film and laughing so much”. Mr Brown said he has a very professional team of both actors and crew who have all worked hard to create a fun filled stage production not to be missed, “We have a brilliant set which has been designed by Stephen Donelan and incredible true period costumes by well-known designer Leone Sharp. If you want a night to have a lot of laughs, then come watch this show”. Anthony Brown lives in a house well known to Leonay locals. His beautiful home was built by Frank Ifield, best known for his hit song ‘I Remember You’. Frank Ifield lived in the home in the 1970’s. Mr Brown loves the Leonay area and enjoys his time working for production company Ruby Productions, which offers quality stage shows almost every month. Ticket price is $25 for adults and $20 concession, $35 at the door. To book tickets, go to www.trybooking.com/291465. To reserve show only, phone (02) 4735 5422. The Latest Oldest In Leadership Talking with friends the other day I heard the latest thing doing the rounds is‘servant leadership’. It’s considered innovative and likely to increase productivity. Servant leadership involves putting the needs of others before those of the person leading. It impacts employees and customers. And I know, whichever one I am, I’m happy to be on the receiving end of that. The thing that struck me though - servant leadership isn’t new, it has been around for centuries, and Jesus nailed it. He set the scene when he said, ‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for

many.’ (Mark 10:45) He was talking about himself. And he backed it up by dying to rescue us. You can’t be any more ‘servant’ than that, dying so other people needn’t die. So I’m not surprised servant leadership gets results. It’s woven into the fabric of the universe. Even more, it’s the way God planned all leaders to lead, because it’s the way of the one God gave to lead us all. Would you benefit from following that sort of leadership?

Chronic Back Pain - There is a Real Solution! Most people have lower back pain at some point in their lives. Sometimes pain disappears after mild anti inflammatory medication, a little rest, or light massage. But often it stays around and becomes a chronic (long lasting) form of back pain. At best, this type of pain can be an annoying ache that’s a bit better when you warm up. At worst, such pain can be constant & debilitating. Pain may radiate down into the buttocks & legs (known as sciatica). It may radiate further down to the tips of the toes. Sometimes sufferers may experience ‘paraesthesia’s. These are strange feelings including sensations such as tingling, cold, heat or even loss of sensation down into affected legs, feet or toes. Such chronic back problems can stop you working, playing, sleeping, eating, thinking, and can leave you frustrated especially when you can’t get treatment to resolve the issue. Many people go for years without adequate relief. Of course, many different causes can lead to such chronic back pain. Various situations may cause simple but chronic overuse injury to back muscles for example: 1. carrying excess stomach weight 2. pregnancy 3. poor posture 4. continual bending – e.g. brick layers Other situations such as heavy or incorrect lifting may lead to acute back injury. Importantly, once injury occurs, it is one common factor that

sustains the cycle of pain. Here’s how this happens. In both the above situations, injured back muscles in the affected area swell with toxin-filled fluids that have leaked from injured cells. This fluid causes the muscles & nerves in the affected area to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood & lymph flow to the affected muscles and connective tissue, which locks the tissues into an ongoing cycle of inflammation. The affected muscles also shorten. This can lock the spine into an unnatural position which enhances stress on the area, hinders healing and perpetuates re-injury, leading over the longer term to chronic age-related changes. Exercise may relieve pain, but can sometimes also worsen the problem. In most instances the best solution lies in working muscles using physical therapy thus: 1. Lengthening muscles and surrounding connective tissue 2. Removing the inflammatory build-up in back muscles This type of work allows muscle function & spine position to normalise. Cases of disc bulge or even disc protrusion (the old ‘slipped disc’) can be remediated in this way. Protruding discs begin to retract, scar over and in time, with regular treatment, one can often relieve back pain completely, even in many longstanding cases. The same is true for many chronic shoulder & knee complaints. If you’d like to know more, please feel free to call Andreas at Beautiful Health & Wellness on 02 4777 5264, or 0418 166 269

support me and they help create a platform for our club to thrive. Mostly, it is the unbridled joy you see when a new player (junior or senior) exhibits a skill that you have worked hard with them in training to master. There is a genuine sense of achievement that is shared by everyone involved”. Support For Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Football Club

Emu Plains Hockey Club have continued the new season on a high, thanks to the support of the community, with 156 players across 14 teams representing the club which make it the largest in the Nepean Hockey Association. The 14 teams consist of 4 Senior Men’s teams, 4 Senior Women’s teams and 6 Junior teams. The Junior teams have two Under 8’s, two Under 11’s and one in the Under 13’s and Under 16’s. “Last year was a huge season for Emu Plains Hockey Club on and off the pitch. My personal highlight would have to be our junior members winning the best creative entry from Hockey Australia for their #100YardChallenge. The kids dressed up as their favourite superheroes and had a great time getting the ball from one end of the field to the other as fast as they could. It was fantastic to receive the support of Hockey Australia and our kids got a Mini Kookaburra toy for their efforts” said Chris Eagleton, President of Emu Plains Hockey Club. “This season, we look forward to the development of our junior players, continuing to build on the success of the club off the field, the social aspect and family focus of the club” he added. The local community can support them by becoming a nonplaying member of the club, for free, where they can come down and enjoy watching some great games. They have a lot of derby games this season (Emu Plains versus Emu Plains) which are always exciting games with plenty of pride on the line, even if it is family pride. Chris told the Emu Leonay Gazette that he enjoys being the President of the local club. “I have a great team of volunteers who work throughout the season and the off season to

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined Peter Foster, President and Alan Harding, Vice President of the Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Football Club to announce a grant of $10,000. Formed in 1967, Emu Plains JRLFC now has over 30 teams ranging from the Under 6’s (including players as young as 4 yrs old) through to A grade. The Club recently had a setback when its canteen/storage area was broken into at Leonay Oval and supplies and equipment were stolen. Stuart Ayres said I am pleased to be able to assist the Emu Plains JRLFC with this funding so that they can replace stock, supplies and purchase some new equipment for the club. Mr Foster said “On behalf of all our club members and volunteers, I would like to thank Stuart Ayres and the Premier for this funding that will help our canteen get back on track which in turn supports our players with its proceeds.” All funds raised from sales at the canteen go back to the club for ground line marking, trophies, jackets, presentations days, fund raising events to contribute towards new amenities and new concrete paths.

Writer Renee Garcia

As July sets in, so does the snow over the mountain and it sure does send chills right through you! I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. You can't beat a homemade soup, by the fire wearing your fluffy socks, cosy and warm. When I was much younger, I recall being responsible for bringing the chopped wood into the house from the shed. I would often grizzle about this task, I also remember all the splinters and heavy work in doing so. Somehow, those memories don't dull my love for Winter, in fact they bring a smile to my face of treasured memories of days gone by. True to the old adage, "The best things in life are free, treasure them!" Enjoy your Community News.
