Jim’s 400 Game Milestone Emu Plains Cricket Club recently celebrated an amazing milestone, with club member and Treasurer, Jim Micsko playing his 400th game in the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA). Jim began playing cricket in the Under 9’s in the 1979/1980 season, almost 40 years ago. He played junior cricket and 10 years of senior cricket with Penrith RSL, followed by 7 seasons for Allround Cricket and Sport before joining Emu Plains Cricket Club in 2004. Jim has also devoted much of his time to the administration side of local cricket, having been a part of the Nepean District Cricket Association Management Committee since the early 2000's and Treasurer for the last 14 seasons. “Scoring runs and taking wickets are nice personal achievements but the main highlights for me have been the recent premiership wins at Emu Plains CC where I've been fortunate enough to play with an excellent group of like-minded men (some young but mostly older guys) where we really enjoy each other's company each weekend. That team success and seeing your team mates do well is more important to me than any personal highlights” said Jim. Whilst playing for Emu Plains, Jim has toured with the local club overseas to play cricket in Hawaii against the Honolulu and Maui Cricket  Jim in action bowling at the Brian Lara Charity Match | Image: Sally Tsoutas, University Photographer, Western Sydney University

Reminiscences of Toby Ryan

This year marks the 200th birthday of ‘local colourful identity’ James Tobias (Toby) Ryan, who was the son of convict John, and Mary Ryan, and the 1894 author of ‘Reminiscences of Australia’. Ryan’s father, John, was transported on the Indefatigable with a life sentence, arriving in 1815. His mother, Mary, was the daughter of First Fleet convicts Anthony Rope and Elizabeth Pulley. Ryan had a diverse career working in timber-getting, horse-breaking and farm labouring. Other occupations included butcher, auctioneer, asphalter and running a boarding house. He was a good boxer, a crack pigeon shot and a racehorse breeder. In 1852, he had Emu Hall built where he entertained visiting politicians and dignitaries. He and a group of local businessmen raised £6,000 to have a bridge built over the Nepean River. After much pomp and circumstance, it was washed away 18 months after opening in 1856. Unfortunately, the rebuilt bridge met the same fate and was also washed away in another flood in 1860. As a result, he gave the middle name ‘Flood’ to one of his children. But that year wasn’t all bad for Ryan, who defeated Robert Jamison, being elected as the Nepean representative in the Legislative Assembly. Ryan served from 186072, becoming ‘a popular and amusing back-bencher’. Last month, a 200th birthday celebration was hosted by the Nepean Family History Society at Old School Residence in Emu Plains. Penrith City Library digitised the facsimile copy of Ryan’s book that was published by NFHS in 1982. Mayor John Thain launched the new book saying Ryan was ‘really one of our local characters that we can be proud of’. Penrith Library Librarian and Historian, Lorraine Stacker gave an insight on Ryan and his life to a standing room only crowd which included Emma Husar MP and a dozen descendants of Ryan, Rope and Pulley. Chris Randall, a 9th generation descendant, in attendance with his family, was very surprised to learn of the irony of his own occupation: a qualified civil engineer who specialises in flood modelling! Ryan died in 1899 and Reverend Fryer said at his Emu Plains graveside that ‘he would be long remember [and] cherished’. It seems he has.  Randall Family 8th, 9th and 10th generation descendants of Toby Ryan. [Back] Max, Chris and Mark Randall. [Front] Jayden, Tamika and Nathaniel Randall | Image: Lisa Finn-Powell

Real People Exceptional Service Achieving Results Local Area Experts When babies are born premature, it takes a special kind of nurse to provide the appropriate care and support to the baby and their family during such an extremely stressful period in their lives. It also takes a very special kind of person to work in Neonatology. A person like Mariann Hennessy. Hennessy has worked in the field of Neonatal nursing for the last 23 years. In 2015, she completed further training to reach the pinnacle of nursing which is a Nurse Practitioner, a role she currently holds at Westmead Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) looking after extreme preterm and sick newborns. Neonatal Nurse Practitioners have more comprehensive training than neonatal nurses and take on greater responsibilities in terms of diagnosis, treatment planning, prescribing medications and making referrals to relevant health professionals. Hennessy’s vast experience has taught her how to help with the emotional side of her job as well. “Nothing in a parent’s life can prepare them for the helplessness that they feel as they watch their fragile newborn” she said, describing how parents often have a mixture of feelings which include guilt, grief, anger, fear and powerlessness. “As a Nurse Practitioner, I am privileged to be part of this journey” explained Hennessy, “and I am in a unique position to help minimise parental stresses by providing information, support and understanding to assist parent’s ability to cope with the fear and uncertainty”, with the ultimate goal of progressing to the stage where the baby finally goes home. Hennessy has a family of her own; her husband Peter, sons Ethan (18 1/2yrs), and Jake (13yrs) and their dog, George. She has lived in Leonay for over 18 years and likes being close to the river and the bush in the Blue Mountains. She has been inspired by many women, but mostly her mother who raised seven children in the country. “She has taught me kindness, compassion, love, the need to help others and laughter – which has lead me into the field of nursing and specialising in Neonatology”. And we, are inspired by her.  Local Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Mariann Hennessy | Image Supplied. Article: Lisa Finn-Powell

Why Should We Swimming Lessons?

Prioritise

I’ve been speaking with lots of parents in the weeks since Christmas and since school went back and there seems to a common theme for us all – we have too much to do, not enough time to do it all, and not enough cash to stretch to cover everything all the time! Life is, quite simply, busy and expensive. So, under these circumstances, why should we continue to prioritise swimming lessons? Convenience. No matter the ages of your children, with a little planning, you can usually arrange your children’s lessons all on the same day, at the same time. We run lessons 7 days a week, at 2 locations. Less than the price of a cup of coffee per day. Swimming lessons are great value for money when considering the skill they teach our children. We also offer discounts for multiple children and/or multiple lessons to make lessons more affordable for families and for children needing to catch up. Swimming lessons improve learning outcomes at school. Research conducted by Griffith University over four years has concluded that children who swim, demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children.

BATHROOM &

The children tested were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions. Fitness and fun. In a world where technology is becoming more and more prevalent, and the government is now offering rebates to encourage physical activity in children, it’s increasingly important to continue to motivate our kids to be active and have fun the old fashioned way – have you ever seen a child not having fun splashing about in the pool on a hot day? For me, this is a part of my childhood that I’ve continued thorough to adult life! Swimming is fun! A skill for life. Swimming can, quite literally, save your child’s life. In my mind, all the other reasons to swim, however compelling, are peripheral to this fact. Of the 291 people who drowned in Australia last year, 41 were children under the age of 14. 41 families lost a child. These deaths were mainly in swimming pools in the 0-4 age group, and rivers, creeks and streams in the 5-14 year old age group, and were largely attributed to lack of supervision for the younger children and lack of a basic level of swimming skills and water safety knowledge in the older age group. Learning to swim from 6 months is a must in Australia and the only responsible choice for parents. And if your child can swim, why continue? There are lots of reasons, including improving technique, cross training for other sports, maintaining fitness, participating in swim club and swim meets, and the personal discipline of the sport of swimming. Swimming is for everyone, all year round, and for life.

Colourful Quilts on Display

Need a Real Gardener? (one who prunes, weeds and feeds your garden, but can also mow?) THEN CALL JOHN 0423 019 053

The Caring Hearts Community Quilters have excelled over the past year. The hard-working group have been able to distribute over 250 beautiful patchwork quilts to Hawkesbury, Nepean, Springwood and Blue Mountains Hospitals for their palliative care wards. This includes quilts to the residents of Edinglassie Nursing Home and Edinglassie Lodge. This is where these colourful quilts are given each year after their Airing of the Quilts event. These senior, dedicated patch workers have been stitching their special kind of magic into these quilts now for almost 16 years, with the knowledge that they are truly doing something they love whilst bringing joy and comfort to those that receive them. One of the members of the group of 14 quilters, said the quilters had also arranged delivery, transport and distribution of hundreds of quilts for people throughout the country affected by floods, fires and other disasters. As the demand of their quilts grow, they are hoping that other quilters might be interested in making the occasional quilt for them. Patch workers are always welcomed into their group. They are always delighted to have donations of fabric and UFO’s, using a great amount of fabric, as you can well imagine. Next month, the Caring Hearts Community Quilters are having their 10th Airing of the Quilts, which is their only fundraising event for the year. It will be held on 14th April 2018 at The Arms of Australia Inn Museum (corner Great Western Highway and Gardenia Street, Emu Plains) from 10am to 4pm, with the cost of $5 to see the quilts. There will be a trading table with handmade goods, book and plant stalls, Devonshire teas, sausage sizzle and a colourful quilt raffle that will be drawn on the day. This is an outside event and will have to be cancelled in the event of bad weather. For any further information, contact Margaret Collier on 4735 2058.

When Love Comes to Town Have you ever seen Noel, the Holden Combo covered in green astro turf out and about on the roads and wondered just where he comes from? Noel is proudly owned by local floristry business All Flowers, who after 25 years at the foot of the Blue Mountains in Blaxland are moving to Emu Plains. All Flowers opens the doors to its brand new, bigger store in Emu Plains on Monday the 5th of March and locals can expect an exciting space like no other. “They can expect all round awesomeness!” said Grace McIlvride, Owner of All Flowers. “The space is going to be filled with floral goodness, candles, a variety of gifts, artworks and gorgeous plants. We are working with local interior designer Kahlia Ryan to continue our signature style of plywood, black metals, natural concrete, softened by all the flowers and stunning lighting”. All Flowers' decision to move to Emu Plains comes on the back of the popular floristry business out growing their previous store. “Thanks to our customers loyalty, expansion of territory and new partnerships, our business is experiencing consistent remarkable growth, that has seen us out grow our little store in Blaxland. It will be sad to say goodbye to the space, but we know our customers are going to love the new space just as much” explained Grace. The business employs 10 staff members who are all local residents. Their team is an amazing bunch of people who are passionate about flowers and the service of gift giving. They are dedicated, hard working and most of the time crazy! There is plenty of laughter and shenanigans that go on and they wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s a great environment and we value them immensely” added Grace.

With Valentine’s Day just over, All Flowers key to getting through one of the busiest times of the year is being super organised and staying calm. There are months of planning and preparing involved, then on the event there are hours of hard work and truck loads of roses. This year, they sent out over 600 deliveries and used 10,000 stems of long red roses! That’s a lot of love to deliver in one day. And with those deliveries comes some wonderful surprises. “Just yesterday, we delivered a marriage proposal!” beamed Grace.

Don’t! Stop! No! Quit! Not! Kids hear those words all day long. And they quickly learn to tune them out. Ever seen what kids do when an adult yells out “don’t run!” ? They run! So, why don’t parents phrase instructions in a positive manner? Tell the child exactly what we want her to do? Our brains are hardwired to look for the negative, to be alert to any stress or threat, and as a result we speak in a negative way. When parents tell the child what they want them to do, rather than what they don’t want them to do, miracles happen. Kids listen. “Jamie, wash your hands for dinner.” “Put your socks in the washing basket.” “Please put your bowl in the sink.” This is called a ‘start’ instruction. You tell the child what you want him to do. There is also something called a ‘stop’ instruction. You use that when a child has done something wrong. You tell the child what she has done wrong, and what to do instead. Example: “Jamie, you are jumping on the lounge. You have to sit on the lounge.” And you wait quietly for the child to comply. That’s all. No other words are necessary. You don’t need to give the child a 20,000 word dissertation on why jumping on the lounge is a bad idea. You don’t need to yell, cajole, bribe, or threaten. You don’t need to call him ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’. You don’t need to mention that you have caught him jumping on the lounge every day since he was two years of age. Save your words. Paying lots of attention to mistaken behaviour will guarantee that you will get more off it. With consistency, your child will get it. If he doesn’t comply you can issue a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour. In the example above, it would be to sit on the floor for a few minutes. Taking the iPad away isn’t related to jumping on the lounge. If you want to know more, check out Triple P on the Resourcing Parents website or online.

Balancing Technology School has been back for over a month. Homework and sport commitments have started. Assignments are rolling in. It’s often this time of the year we start to reflect on routines and expectations, especially when it comes to our children. Is my child getting enough exercise and sleep? Is he studying enough? Is she overusing technology and always glued to her phone or tablet? How do I ensure my child is living a balanced life when technology is embedded in our everyday lives? It is no secret that technology is changing, and has changed, the way that we live. We rely on it to communicate, play, pay bills and work. We even use it in our schools to aid learning. Educational settings are adorned with Interactive White Boards, laptops, tablets and computers. Some schools participate in the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, use web-based learning platforms to set tasks and encourage self-directed learning and virtual interaction between students and teachers. Technology in educational settings allows for greater global connection, instant access to information and prepares students for their ever-changing digital future. There is no denying this fact. Although technology usage in schools certainly has massive benefits, there are many concerns about the detrimental effects technology can have on children. Childhood obesity, the degradation of social skills and shift in family dynamics, bullying and accessing inappropriate content are all serious and valid fears held by parents and experts in this field. It is imperative that we remain vigilant and considered when allowing children the use of technology and set boundaries and rules for usage that are reasonable. Schools already have these policies in place. What is reasonable, you ask? Well, it is not just about minimising the time spent using technology but rather what that time is spent doing. You need to ask yourself if the digital interaction is adding value to your child’s life in some way. If the answer to that question is yes, then it is most likely an activity that would sit comfortably within the ’acceptable’ parameters for your family. If technology usage is causing changes in behaviour, lack of adequate rest and physical activity or impacting on your ‘real-life’ interactions, then it is probably something that needs to be reviewed and clear guidelines put in place. If you are concerned about your child’s safety online, check out www.esafety.gov.au for some helpful tips and resources. Technology is part of our everyday lives | Image: www.pexels.com. preparation 1. Blend or process biscuits until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add butter process until just combined. Press biscuit mixture evenly over base and side of 20cm springform tin, place on tray. Refrigerate about 30 minutes or until firm. 2. Meanwhile make butterscotch sauce, combine brown sugar, extra butter and 2 tablespoons of the cream in small saucepan. Stir over low heat, without boiling until sugar dissolves. 3. To make the chocolate sauce, combine chocolate and another 2 tablespoons of the cream in a separate small saucepan, stir over low heat until chocolate melts. 4. Sprinkle gelatine over the 1/4 cup water in small heatproof jug. Stand jug in small saucepan of simmering water, stir until gelatine dissolves. Cool for 5 minutes. 5. Beat cream cheese and caster sugar in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip thickened cream by beating with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. 6. Stir gelatine mixture into cream cheese mixture with chopped Mars Bars. Fold in cream. 7. Pour half of the cream cheese mixture into crumb crust. Drizzle half of the butterscotch and chocolate sauces over cream cheese mixture. Pull a skewer backwards and forwards through mixture (zig-zag) to create marbled effect. Repeat with remaining cream cheese mixture and sauces. 8. Cover cheesecake. Refrigerate for about 3 hours or until set.

The Lions Club of Emu Plains, in conjunction with the Australian Lions Foundation, have provided two new chairs for oncology patients at the Cancer Care Unit at Nepean Hospital. The chairs cost $14,546 for the two, with the Club raising half and the Australian Lions Foundation matching them dollar for dollar. The chairs were supplied by Dalcross Medical Equipment, an Australian company. The Australian Lions Foundation has been on the ground providing financial assistance and support to local communities in times of need or when disaster strikes, e.g. the ALF was amongst the first to offer disaster relief when Cyclone Tracey decimated Darwin in 1974, and the devastating bushfires that impacted areas of South Australia and Victoria in 2015. They continue to fulfil this need not only in Australia and Papua New Guinea, but also internationally where emergency relief and community welfare projects contribute to global understanding and cooperation. Emu Plains Lions Club President, Alan Cooper, said “It’s a good start to the fundraising year, as we are celebrating our 30-year anniversary in 2018. Working with ALF ensures our dollars go further and more projects can be undertaken”. A total of 11 chairs were contributed and a plaque acknowledging the contributors is to be affixed in the Unit on the wall outside the Day Unit.

Shop 23, 510-534 High St Penrith 2750 P: 4722 8660 E: penrith@parliament.nsw.gov.au Inspiring Mum’s New Business Three short years ago, local mother of two, Ebony Penny, was involved in a serious car accident. She broke both her legs, knee, sternum and punctured both lungs with one of them collapsing. Her injuries left her lucky to be alive and it took a further six months of hospital visits and rehabilitation to get her life back on track. During this time, the community came together to help Ebony and her young family any way they knew how, whether it was raising money, delivering dinner to her house or taking her daughter to and from school every day. Fast forward to 2018 and the inspirational Mum has some exciting news to share with the local community, opening the doors to her new business Cut and Color Co in Emu Heights last month. Cut and Color Co is a boutique style salon, specialising in on-trend style cutting and the latest hair colouring techniques. The business also retails a range of exclusive hair care products to suit all hair types that are available only in-salon. “I have been a hairstylist for 20 years. I enjoy living and working in the local area” said business owner Ebony. Cut and Color Co’s goals are to provide a boutique salon environment where their clients can come to relax, enjoy a good coffee knowing that their hair is in experienced hands whilst using top quality products and having a great time. Their long-term goals are to grow the business, with the possibility of employing another local hairdresser or apprentice in the future. “I’d love to be able to help a fellow Mum hairdresser come back to work and be able to work hours that fit in with having a good work/ life balance” she said. “What I enjoy most about living and working in the Emu Plains/ Emu Heights area - aside from our beautiful river which I love to ride my stand-up paddle board on, is the community spirit. The local community made a very hard time in our lives that much easier and I’ll never forget that. I just love our little community” ended Ebony. Cut and Color Co’s Ebony Penny | Image Supplied

A Super Day at Kid’s Supaday Sixty-four primary school students kicked off the school term with a super day of activities at Emu Plains Anglican Church last month. The “Kid’s Supaday” was held on the pupil free day at the start of the school term. Jen Wheeler, who co-ordinated the day, said “The kids all seemed to have a great time and they listened and followed their leaders. We had a wonderful day with them all”. This is the first time the Church has run a pupil free day activity. It was led by twenty trained volunteers of different ages and life stages. “We had some junior leaders and leaders who had not done this sort of thing before. Despite the heat, it was incredible to see everyone working together, developing relationships with the kids and eager to do it again” Jen said. The theme of the day was ‘lost and found’, picking up on Jesus’ words that he came to seek and save people who are lost. It was interwoven among activities including drama, craft, games, sport and a water activity. Supaday fun with guest Scruff the Dog and his side-kick Josh | Image Supplied

Purpose For Life It’s great to know your purpose in life! A few years ago a friend of mine was reading a biography of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bit I loved was where they’d found a guy who knew Arnie as a teenager. This is what Arnie had told him he was setting out to do in life (do the voice in your head as you read it), “I want to be the greatest body builder in the world, and then I want to go to Hollywood, and make movies, and then I will go into politics”. Here is a guy who knew what he wanted to do – and went out and did it - for all of us to see. As we end this month with Easter, I can’t help but think of Jesus’ laser focus on his purpose for life. He told his disciples he

was heading to Jerusalem to be taken into custody, condemned to death, killed, and three days later to rise again (Mark 10:3334). And that’s exactly what they saw happen. The thing is, the Bible tells us Jesus’ purpose has world altering effects for the rest of us. His purpose gives us purpose. Life is about knowing him, receiving him as the authority over our lives, and responding to him with trust and obedience. The proof this is true? He rose from the dead (Romans 1:1-5). Arnie is a good example of someone with purpose, but Jesus’ purpose changed the world, and offers us meaning, and purpose, and life.

Leonay Golf Club Announce Men's Committee

The Golf Committee's first meeting was held recently, with various sub-committees announced including Match Committee, Greens Committee, Judiciary and Emu Sports Club Liaison Committee. The Senior Pennants Series began last month, with Leonay hosting Northbridge GC. Leonay's other opponents this season are Northbridge GC and The Coast GC.

Brawn Power

Leonay Golf Club has announced its senior Men's Committee Members for 2018, with nine of the current members retaining their positions. David Grosse (President), Ross Butcher (Captain), Les Knox (Vice President), Peter McFarlane (Vice Captain), Laurie Beresford (Treasurer), Peter Walker (Secretary), Paul Latimer, Dean Mallard and John Kennedy have all been re-elected, whilst the new members are Matt Heyhoe and Peter Haines. Knox and Beresford are both Life Members of the Club, whilst David Grosse is also a Director on the Emu Sports Club Board. The spread of experience is impressive, with Knox (43 years), McFarlane (36), Butcher (32) and Beresford (28) all long-time members. There are also four A-Grade players in the committee, being Grosse (4), McFarlane (9), Kennedy (10) and Butcher (11).

2017 proved to be a winning season for Professional Golf Association (PGA) Trainee, Evan Brawn (Springwood), who recorded three wins, five Top-5 finishes and a further six Top Ten finishes in an action-packed year. Brawn, the Trainee Professional at Leonay Golf Club, recorded his wins in events at Springwood, Cromer and Rich River. His immediate plans are to finish his Traineeship, before heading to Asia to try his luck in both Japan and China on their ever-expanding tours. The future was however unclear for Brawn in 2015, with injuries curtailing his golf plans for two years, prior to his signing-on at Leonay. The key factor in his future plans will be the effects of the constant stress on his body and whether it can withstand the rigorous schedule of a touring Professional. Should injury curtail his touring career, Brawn is keen to pursue a broad coaching role, with both beginners and tour players. The State Trainee Tournament Schedule for 2018 can be found at: http://www.pga.org.au/tourns/trainee/schedule. ď śď€ [Back] L-R: Paul Latimer, Matt Heyhoe, Laurie Beresford, John Kennedy, Peter McFarlane. Jim’s 400 Game Milestone

Clubs. Bowling to West Indies legend Brian Lara in a charity match also counts as a high point in his impressive career. As a member of the Nepean District Cricket Association Management Committee, Jim has been able to assist in giving back to the sport that has given him so much enjoyment over the years. “One of our goals is to improve facilities for players across the District. I'm pleased that we've been able to fund some major projects like cricket net rebuilds and providing sun shelters to the majority of the grounds in the District he said. Jim’s role within the Management Committee of Emu Plains Cricket Club (currently as Treasurer) has seen him assist in playing opportunities for all the players, as well establishing grass roots programs such as Milo T20 Blast and Milo In2Cricket programs for the next generation of young cricketers. One such player is Jim’s son Dane, who is a member of the Under 10 Red side at the club. For any cricketers out there, who one day may want to follow in Jim’s footsteps, he has this advice, “Just have fun. Enjoy the time with your mates, try your best, train hard, celebrate your successes and always play the game in the right spirit. Not everyone can play for Australia, but I encourage all young players to strive to play at the highest level if that's what they want to do. HEALTH MATTERS

Autoimmune Back Issues – You May Need To Change What You Eat To Fix Your Back Most of the time when I see patients with back problems, their muscles are invariably tight shortened and inflamed to a degree. They may also have some type of structural issue. Therapy works to reduce tissue inflammation and lengthen affected muscles & connective tissues, allowing tissue to heal and regain normal function. Rate of improvement is an individual thing and depends on things like patient’s age, nutritional status, how long standing the condition is, and the degree of damage. Some recoveries happen quickly some a little more slowly, but most respond well. Some people however do not respond well. There are a variety of reasons for this, but here I want to talk about one reason in particular – when people have ‘back-pain’ due to underlying gut dysfunction. Studies show that gut inflammation is common in patients with chronic spondylarthropathy (any joint disease of the vertebral column). One-quarter of the patients have early features of Crohn’s disease’. Most people don’t realise that the intestines live adjacent to the lower back. So, if a person has immune activation in the gut, this can lead to inflammation in the lower back. A number of mechanisms are at play: 1. Microbes can translocate from your intestines into the blood stream, and move directly into the back tissues. This happens in small numbers i.e. not enough microbes to cause sepsis but enough to cause activation of immune cells resident in back tissue, leading to inflammation and pain. 2. Immune cells resident in the lining of the intestines also

become primed and activated to defend against the microbes translocating from the intestines. These activated cells then enter the blood stream and migrate to all areas of the body. Those that move into the back tissues where inflammation is already present fan the flames and exacerbate the pain and inflammation associated with any pre-existing back issues, sometimes causing further damage. Now we have an auto immune issue. In such cases, treatment which normally successfully removes inflammatory materials for back tissues fails to, simply because inflammatory materials build up in the tissues faster than they can be successfully cleared. This happens because there is no let-up of microbial translocation and immune cell entry into back tissues from the gut. The only way to heal this type of situation is to make dietary alterations that lead to gut healing. This may mean carefully removing certain trigger foods for a period of time, and adding in certain foods and supplements that activate gut function. Such changes allow the gut to heal, then muscle elongation therapy can be successfully applied to remediate the patient’s back problems. Interestingly the same or similar mechanisms underlie most if not all auto immune conditions and so, appropriate diet and lifestyle changes can help overcome many of these diseases. If you have this type of back issue or autoimmune issues in general feel free to call us at the clinic.

Three Ways To Execute Your Plan In 2018 Last month we spoke all about goal setting for 2018 but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen great plans hit paper then go on to collect dust. Execution is key and it’s the single biggest differentiator between those who simply ‘survive’ and those who ‘thrive’. Sticking with the ‘process of three’, here’s three ways to execute your plan and achieve your goals: 1. Focus 2. Clarity 3. Purpose Focus: provides the clarity to make decisions that move you toward your goals. Focus and clarity define your roadmap to achieving your most important goals. A laser-focus provides the answers to your “what questions, “What do you need to do today to move closer to your goals? Clarity: let’s you say ‘no’ to actions that don’t directly support your goals. Decide your three most important actions for the

day and commit to getting them done. Close out distractions by deciding to delegate, defer or dump them. Clarity provides the answers to your “how questions, “How will you go about achieving your goals? Purpose: remember your why! Have a big enough purpose and it will drive you beyond belief. Commit to sharing your purpose, it creates a shared vision, a sense of connectedness and a level of engagement that breathes meaning and value into why you do what you do. Purpose answers your “why question, “Why am I doing this today? When you make the effort to consistently apply a laser-focus and remain clear by learning to say ‘no’ to distractions, you act with purpose to execute your plan and cumulatively achieve your most important goals. As you develop the grit to stick with it, momentum builds and you create a self-reinforcing cycle of success. Execute today, win tomorrow!
