The popularity of girls playing rugby league is at an alltime high in Australia, with 2018 showcasing a Women’s NRL competition as well as Women’s State of Origin. Emu Plains JRLFC are proving to be a strong local club in the girl’s competition and they’re looking to grow this season. “Last season, the club fielded an Under 16’s and Under 18’s team with more than 30 players, which was more than double the previous year. In 2019, we hope to have an Under 14’s, Under 16’s, Under 18’s and an Open Women’s team. This is looking promising with our Under 16’s having limited spots left and our Open Women’s having portability with Mounties RLFC” said Joanne Vella, Women’s/Girl’s Co-Ordinator of Emu Plains JRLFC. In 2018, the club held their first girl’s coaching clinic, which was headlined by Sydney Roosters Captain and Jillaroos player Simaima Taufa. Taufa also supported the girls throughout the year attending some of their training sessions and was a great inspiration to the girls. The Under 16’s hit capacity, which had never happened before. They attended the first Women’s State of Origin game and the Under 16’s went on to make the finals. Penrith junior rugby league introduced a girl’s only Sunday competition. “We also introduced the first Emu Plains Girl’s playing jerseys and had girls chosen to represent in the Tarsha Gale Cup, Penrith League Tag and Lisa Fiola Cup” added Joanne. They held a clinic last month with League of our Own that was hosted by 4 very talented female coaches and players. The successful event saw them welcome girls of all skill level, where they promoted the game to encourage more girls to play. “We are looking forward to the girls further developing their skills and getting the same opportunities out of the game that the boys do, the increasing numbers with more and more girls joining the game and our portability with Mounties RLFC for our Open Women’s team giving girls/women who play for Emu Plains another pathway in the game” Joanne told the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Emu Plains JRLFC are still taking players in all age groups. For more information, contact Joanne on 0410 439348 or visit www.emuplainsjrlfc.com.au.

Seceding From the Crown

U Image | www.pexels.com

Have you ever heard of Hutt River? It was in the news again just the other day. It’s in Western Australia and it became famous in the 1970s. The reason? It’s land owner Leonard Casley seceded from Australia. At least, that’s what he thinks – the government and High Court beg to differ! Casley seceded and called himself Prince Leonard, stopped paying taxes, started issuing his own currency, and his own passports. Despite the authority of the Australian government over his land, and all the inhabitants of his property, he said, ‘I’m going my own way’. Now when Jesus came, he told people that we’re the same. The reason Jesus came and said what he said, and did what he did, was to put his finger on the problem we all face - each of us has done a Prince Leonard with God. It’s all about authority. You can only ultimately follow one authority. And while we have responsibilities to lead ourselves, the grand story of the Bible has God as the creator and ruler over all. That doesn’t mean he’s a cruel and despotic leader, but rather a wise and insightful leader, who knows what’s best for the people he made. But you can only have one in charge, and the role of God is already taken! The good news is, that Jesus wasn’t just one of those people who point out the problem, and leave you hanging. His message to turn back to God by believing in him was also the solution. Now, some people have told me that’s offensive, that it offends their pride to suggest we have such a problem or need a solution. And I get that. But given the problem, that’s hardly surprising. My challenge is this – check out what Jesus says for yourself.

Liam is All That Jazz

U Liam Gray | Image: Aubtin Namdar

At just 22 years of age, local jazz musician Liam Gray has already achieved more than most his age in the world of music, with this year promising to be even bigger. The hard-working guitarist and singer grew up listening to his parent’s music collection at a young age, before performing for the first time whilst still at school as a 14-year-old. “I love jazz music. As a musician, it’s the genre I focus on. Growing up, I’d listen to my Dad’s music like The Beatles and Eric Clapton. That progressed to blues with B.B King and Stevie Ray Vaughn to name a few. Today, musicians like Vince Jones and Kurt Elling inspire me. And of course, Ol’ Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra” Gray explained. Liam played guitar with the Western Sydney Regional Big Band at just 15 and toured China in 2011 and 2013. After finishing school, he began playing gigs on his own at venues like the Park Hyatt in Sydney and the Annandale Hotel. He started studying a Bachelor of Music at the Australian Institute of Music in 2015. At around this time, Liam’s love of music would extend to musical theatre, with the ‘double threat’ taking part in the Blue Mountains Musical Society’s production of Tommy. This was followed by West Side Story in 2016 and Jesus Christ Superstar in 2017. “Musical theatre is great. Having the opportunity to sing and act here in the Blue Mountains has been an amazing experience. I would really like to do more of that” he said. Since completing his studies, Gray now finds himself teaching music through Stormer Music in Blaxland and playing local solo, duo and band gigs. It is here that he enjoys playing most of all, “The Blue Mountains is very communal. The local talent is well fostered and there is camaraderie amongst the musicians and the audiences. People are genuinely interested in music and have a good appreciation for what we do”. As for 2019, Liam adds with a smile, “There’s lots of exciting things in the pipeline. Watch this space”. Child Anxiety Is Increasing

Daylight Savings Ends 2:00 am Sunday, 7 April 2019 All times are in Eastern Australia time

Current estimates are that 10% of children suffer from anxiety. I think it is more, mainly because anxiety is frequently misunderstood by parents and teachers. Anxiety is often mislabelled as laziness, stubbornness, shyness, defiance, anger, etc, because it sometimes looks like those. It can also look like ADHD. I remember working with a family a few years ago. The child was extremely anxious. She would not go to the toilet or shower by herself in her own home. She would not do her homework. The parent said she was lazy. I asked ‘lazy or terrified?’ and the parent stopped in her tracks, and quietly said ‘terrified’. If your child’s anxious behaviours are disruptive and dysfunctional and limiting his/her quality of life, please get it treated. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is regarded as the best treatment. Anxiety is a HUGE topic, but here are some tips for you… • Get it treated sooner rather than later. I prefer to see it treated by the age of 7 years. After that, the child starts to develop more fears and phobias and they pile up on top of each other. Untreated anxiety can lead to further and more severe mental health problems during adolescence and adulthood, and there is a greater risk of substance abuse. Western Sydney University has a low-cost psychology clinic. • Teach your child calming down skills such as deep belly breathing, positive self-talk, calming thoughts, and counting backwards. Practice calming down skills daily and reinforce the use of calming down skills. Hint – a calming down skill is portable and soothing - it is not patting a puppy (can’t take a puppy to school), going for a walk (can’t go for a walk whenever you feel like it), or punching a pillow (keeps you in ‘fight’ mode). • Pay attention to brave behaviours (rather than the anxious behaviours). • If your child has to go somewhere such as a school excursion or camp, work out a plan with him or her for anticipated anxious moments and which calming skills s/he can use to get through those moments. Let the teachers know about the plan so they can walk your child through it if your child is in a panic. Do not rescue your child, remind him/her of the plan – anxiety is a negative feedback loop, the more you rescue the worse it will get. • Role model calm. If you are anxious, your child will be anxious. I have some anxiety resources on the Hands, Hearts & Minds blog https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/anxietyresources/. U Image: www.pexels.com

How was School Today?

Positive Ways of Communicating with your Child Many parents or caregivers of school-aged children would be familiar with the age-old ritual of asking your child how their day was at school. Often, these questions are met with a simple one word reply or in some cases, no reply at all. Parents are left pondering what their child is actually learning and if they have any friends. Sound familiar? Encouraging children to share information about their day at school is about asking the right questions at the right time. Before you can do this, you need to consider your child’s personality and communication style. Some children do not respond favourably to being bombarded with questions the minute they get in the car after school. Others might feel pressured to respond a particular way for fear of your reaction to what they say. Whilst some children might need questions phrased a particular way

P R E PA R E YOUR CHILD FOR A

to encourage them to open up. Identifying the communication style or needs of your child is the first step to authentic and open communication. If you feel your child is becoming overwhelmed with being asked when they first see you, resist the urge to jump straight into questions but rather say hello, offer them an afternoon snack or drink and tell them a little about your day. Ease the questions in as part of a relaxed, non-confrontational conversation. Also, by modelling how you communicate about the day, it will demonstrate effective communication for your child. It is difficult to keep your emotions in-check when your child is experiencing difficulties at school and most of us are probably guilty of having an overreaction to something our child has told us that has happened at school before. If this has been the case in the past, you will need to rebuild your trust with your child and show them a controlled and positive outlook to overcoming problems at school. This will take time but stick with it as it will open the doors to communication in the future. When phrasing questions, try to word them in ways that elicit a response that requires more than one word. Instead of “How was your day?” try, “Tell me about the best part of your day”. Instead of “Did you learn anything today?” try, “What are 3 things you learned today?”. If the answer is “nothing”, then you could ask which subjects they had and ask a specific question related to that subject. If the class teacher uses an app to communicate to parents, use that information as a discussion point to connect with your child. Remember, all these things take time to develop so the key is be positive and encouraging but not forceful. U Building trust is important in opening the doors of communication Image: www.pexels.com. Imagine a world where you could cut your food bill in half. Imagine then being able to pay for other things like schooling, holidays because you can earn income from home. Imagine building an amazing food community in your suburb and supporting local growers and food manufacturers. The imagining of inexpensive quality food is now a reality with Box Divvy. Partners in life and passionate food community farmers from Wherrol Flat near Wingham, Jayne Travers-Drapes and Anton van den Berg, have partnered with Western Sydney Diabetes Alliance in order to create a fresh food ordering system like no other. Now, in the Leonay area, local food warrior Helen Roebuck has created her own Food Hub with the Box Divvy ordering system. Members share bulk boxes of freshly picked produce and other grocery items, which means by purchasing in bulk they can reduce the cost. They save 30-40% on their food bill. “The Leonay Hub of Box Divvy started operating in early January. I think this really helped us get off the ground, as the new year is a time when many people turn their focus to their health. Having moved to Western Sydney in 2017, I noticed a lack of easy access to high quality fresh fruit and vegetables. I have been a member of a food co-op for many years, but I was drawn to Box Divvy as it gives the flexibility that many food co-ops do not. It also has the additional benefit of providing me with extra income” explained Box Divvy Leonay’s Helen Roebuck. Box Divvy Leonay delivers to Leonay, Emu Plains, Lapstone, Glenbrook, Blaxland and Mount Riverview. If you don’t have a local hub and are happy to drive to Leonay to collect your order, you can also do this. “Once you have registered via www.boxdivvy.com, you can start ordering. Because all our ordering is done in bulk and then divvied up between the hub, we have the power to save on prices” said Helen. “Many of the Leonay Hub members are parents, and as a parent of two boys myself, I find that what I call 'kid friendly snacks' like apples, grapes and bananas are really popular. Occasionally, we have more obscure items available, such as spaghetti squash and the whole hub jumped on board wanting to try it! We all work together sharing recipes and ideas, in turn resulting in an increased intake of fruit and vegetables for our families” she ended. Emu Plains Senior Recognised with a 2019 Local Achievement Award Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith presented Susan Gallagher, of Emu Plains with a 2019 NSW Seniors Local Achievement Award, last month. “I offer my congratulations to Susan on receiving this award and say thank you to all of the seniors who make invaluable contributions within our community,” Stuart Ayres said. “Whether it’s volunteering at the Penrith Blood Bank or preparing morning tea at the Joan for Morning Melodies, Susan always goes above and beyond to ensure the comfort of others,” said Stuart Ayres. Susan represents the Red Cross at Penrith Citizenship ceremonies to encourage new citizens to become involved in the local community, has served with Meals on Wheels, is a Life Member of the Prostate Cancer Support Group and is Secretary to the Penrith Branch of the Red Cross. The NSW Seniors Local Achievement Awards are a way the NSW Government is recognising seniors during the 2019 NSW Seniors Festival. Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies commended the recipients of the 2019 NSW Seniors Local Achievement Award across NSW. “I am thrilled that seniors across the State are being recognised under this program for their extraordinary contributions our families and communities,” Mrs Davies said. “The 2019 NSW Seniors Local Achievement Awards give our local communities an opportunity to say thank you to seniors.” NSW Seniors Festival is the largest festival for seniors in the Southern Hemisphere and was established by the NSW Government to support seniors to participate in the community and connect with others.

Shakespeare by the River You could be excused for not having heard of Cymbeline before. One of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays, it was first performed a mere 5 years before his death and manages to fall somewhere between comedy and tragedy. Cymbeline's kingdom is in danger; his sons are stolen, his daughter disobeys him, his wife plots against him, and Rome seeks vengeance. While court intrigues carry us towards a war that could destroy Briton, we love to hate the Queen's obnoxious son, long for the Princess to be reunited with her love and hope for the Queen to receive her comeuppance. First time director with the Acting Factory, Felicity Jean, brings together a cast and crew from across Sydney and Canberra, joining local faces in this fantastic show. Presenting Cymbeline as a blend of traditional and contemporary styles, with an innovative stage encircling the audience to bring them into the fold, they will witness political intrigue, young love and old scheming, plots, murder and battle. Acting Factory regular, Mitchell Rist, assistant directs, as well as being an invaluable cast member. International Screen Academy graduates Rhiannon Wates and Kendall Drury, feature, and award-winning actress Angela Pezzano cameos, with Tony Guyot in the titular role. Local theatre goers will also recognise the familiar faces of Rebecca Dean, Josh Stojanovic, Ian Bate, and Katie John, who have performed many times around Penrith and the Lower Mountains. Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket or low chair to sit on and are welcome to bring drinks and snacks. There is no charge to attend, but donations are welcome. The performances will run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from March 22 until April 7 at Regatta Park in Emu Plains.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Paracetamol – Can it cause Gastrointestinal Symptoms? Last month I briefly cited at a nested case-control analysis done in 2001 looking at 2,105 cases of upper gastrointestinal complications (UGICs) and 11,500 controls. Patients were considered cases if they suffered a bleed/perforation in the stomach or duodenum or their clinical diagnosis was peptic ulcer, and the patient had been referred to a consultant or admitted to hospital. The study found that patients taking acetaminophen at doses: 1. less than 2000 mg daily had no increased risk of UGICs, while those taking, 2. greater than 2000 mg daily were 3.6 times more likely to have UGICs compared with non-users. The study also compared non-users & NSAID users (NSAIDs use carries known risk for gastrointestinal complications). Compared with non-users, NSAID use increased the relative risk of upper gastrointestinal complications: 1. 2.4 times for low/medium doses 2. 4.9 times for high doses 3. 3.1 times for short plasma half-life NSAIDs, 4. 4.5 times for long half-life NSAIDs, 5. 5.4 times for slow-release formulations. Thus, (in this study at least) there seems to be a real risk of upper gastrointestinal complications that comes with Acetaminophen use above 2000mg daily, and this risk is intermediate between the risk level from low/medium and high NSAID use. More importantly patients need to understand that if they take Acetaminophen > 2000mg daily with NSAIDs, these drugs may interact to increase risk of UGICs substantially. When compared with non-users of drugs in either group, the relative risk of UGICs was 13.2 times greater in patients who used both an NSAIDs and acetaminophen (2000 mg or more). This relative risk changed little (it increased slightly to 14.3) when the analysis was restricted to just patients with either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Conversely, when the acetaminophen dose was less than 2000mg per day, even with concurrent NSAID use, the relative risk of UGIC was 4.1 times that of control patients (taking no drugs). i.e. low dose acetaminophen, plus NSAID gave roughly the same risk as medium to high dose acetaminophen alone. According to Lewis (2002), although the above case control study has some limitations, the fact that ‘the risk of gastrointestinal toxicity was only observed among current users of acetaminophen’ and that, ‘there seemed to be a clear

dose response, with no increased risk of gastrointestinal toxicity at doses below 2000 mg/day’ suggests that findings may be legitimate. So how may an essentially very safe drug such as acetaminophen cause increased risk of UGICs at doses above 2000mg per day? Lewis states ‘In general, acetaminophen has been viewed as an analgesic and antipyretic compound without associated risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. However, at high concentrations, acetaminophen can also inhibit’ both COX 1 and 2 enzymes & thus ‘high doses of acetaminophen could also lead to peptic ulcer disease and upper gastrointestinal bleeding’. So why has much of the literature prior to this study found no gastrointestinal effects of acetaminophen intake? The Authors state that this ‘apparent paradox between our findings and’ most of the previous ‘clinical literature disappears when one takes into account that the majority of these [previous] studies included doses lower than 2,000 mg per day’ and were done using ‘healthy subjects’.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

New Baby Boy for Rachel!! On Sunday 10th February 2019, our veterinary nurse, Rachel gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Both mum and bub are doing well. We wish Rachel the best of luck through her journey of parenthood. Theresa, one of our veterinarians, is due March 2019 with her second child. We wish them best of luck through this special journey. We are all very excited for the new arrivals! Check out our Facebook page for baby updates. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

800 New Commuter Car Spaces at Emu Plains

The number of parking spaces available for customers at Emu Plains train station will more than double under an NSW Liberals and Nationals Government. Premier Gladys Berejiklian recently announced because of the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s strong economic management $71 million will be invested to deliver up to 800 extra commuter car spaces with a new car park at Emu Plains. “We will deliver these additional car spaces on top of the 780 already available to customers using Emu Plains train station” Ms Berejiklian said. “Once this new commuter car park is complete, there will be nearly 1,600 car spaces available for customers around Emu Plains station. “As a Government, we are doing all we can to encourage people to use public transport and extra car spaces makes it COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD

easier for commuters to do so”. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the car park extension would address the increasing demand for parking in the area from train customers. “This is great news for locals who have been a part of the massive growth in patronage on the Sydney Train network over the past few years” Mr Ayres said. “We will convert the existing car park to the north of the station to a multi-storey facility with four levels over the ground floor to create 800 new car spaces for my community”. Since 2011, the NSW Government has delivered more commuter car spaces in the local area, including additional spaces at Penrith, Kingswood and Glenbrook.
