Give Mum an Experience to Remember this Mother's Day We all love our mums and by gifting the experience of a live performance, you'll offer her a precious time to share and remember - especially if you've bought a second ticket so you can accompany her! An evening at the theatre. A chance to dress up and enjoy stories that traverse legends, rumours, treachery and justice; they’re global, local and personal. And some of them are funny! Mums are known to have a great sense of humour so The Joan puts comedy front and centre with The Wharf Revue 2018 by Sydney Theatre Company, where you will get to enjoy political satire like no other, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow featuring funnymakers from Australia and beyond, and an unexpectedly hilarious take on a journey through cancer survival as Daniel Tobias effortlessly draws us into the inspiring tale of his near-death experience in The Orchid & The Crow. A comedy about an atheist surviving cancer by finding God in Lance Armstrong - with songs! Part story-telling, part-theatre, with original songs, this brilliantly clever and ultimately moving story has been described by audiences as 'life-changing'. Everybody remembers the story of Lindy Chamberlain. Accused of murdering her child, her claim – that the baby was taken by a dingo – was denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. Filled with humour and heartbreak, Letters to Lindy explores the public’s relationship with one of 20th Century Australia’s most iconic figures. Treat mum to Bell Shakespeare’s masterful interpretation of Julius Caesar in a production that will leave her breathless. For her 40th birthday, Leonay local, Lisa Finn Powell had afternoon tea with friends in the posh confines of the Savoy Hotel in London. She was the mother of four thriving children, two boys and two girls, aged 2-13, and married to a successful international lawyer. The family were just at the end of a seven year adventure living in London and travelling Europe, and were moving back home to the States to start a new life in Seattle. In a matter of months, she would be the widowed mother of four devastated young children, after her husband died from a mysterious toxic brain injury. To make matters worse, she discovered that unbeknownst to her, they had no life insurance, no mortgage protection and no savings. The Thin Time is a memoir of grief, loss and hope. It chronicles the journey no mother wants to take as she struggles to rebuild a life for her children. It is a raw, unflinching account of her confusion, anger, paranoia and depression, and how she found happiness again. It’s the inspiring story of how she accepted some hard truths by learning the lessons of nature. ‘For over a decade, I tried to write this book,’ said Finn Powell, ‘I had to come all the way to Australia, 10,000 miles from all that I have ever known, and listen to the wind blow through the gum trees’. The Thin Time book launch - Saturday 12 May, 5pm, 20 Mile Hollow Cafe, Woodford. info@lisafinnpowell.com. Follow her on Facebook @LisaFinnPowellWriter. She is also a reporter for the District Gazette and editor of the The Arms Chronicle for the Nepean District Historical Society. Lisa Finn-Powell and her book 'The Thin Time' | Image: Will Graznak

Keep Hydrated With New Water Refill Stations

New water refill stations have been installed across the Penrith local government area in partnership with Sydney Water to make it easier for the community to access clean drinking water in public places, and to reduce the use of plastic bottles. Council is encouraging people to stay hydrated, especially on hot days, and refill their water bottles with fresh tap water at the new water refill stations. The stations are located at Jamison Park, Penrith, Ched Towns Reserve, Glenmore Park, Werrington Lakes, Victoria Park, St Marys and Duke’s Oval, Emu Plains. The Mayor, Councillor John Thain said this is a great initiative to encourage people to avoid bottled water by using their own refillable bottles. “The water stations will provide a convenient and safe source of water for people when they are out and about as well as helping our local environment. Already Council has received some really positive comments from users of these valuable new assets for our community”, Councillor Thain said. Sydney Water removes over one million plastic bottles from waterways each year across their area of operations. Kelly Climo, Senior Marketing Advisor at Sydney Water said, “We are delighted to be partnering with Penrith City Council to provide the community with high quality drinking water in convenient locations.” “We have some of the best drinking water in the world and it’s already filtered by Sydney Water.” The water refill stations are easy to use and also offer options to drink directly from the station, or to fill your water bottle. They also provide a dog bowl so that your furry friend can grab a drink too.  Penrith Mayor John Thain tops up his water bottle at one of the new water refill stations | Image Supplied

Homework Habits

Homework is an accepted part of every child’s schooling. However, it doesn’t have to become a family battle. The key is for parents and children to be prepared. Your child should have a set, regular time for homework that fits in around your schedule and your child’s other commitments such as sport or music lessons. Homework should come at a time after your child has had a chance to relax after arriving home and before they are allowed to play or watch television. Relaxing immediately after school is as important for children as it is for adults who want to wind down after coming home from work. Give your child an afternoon snack and use that time to find out what their homework tasks are, whether they need any special materials for projects, and when it needs to be ready. While children don’t have to have absolute quiet when working, they should have a homework area that has clear table space, is well lit, and is free from obvious distractions (like the television). If your child wants your opinion on how good their homework is don’t feel that you have to make sure the work is perfect before they hand it in. They may feel discouraged if you point out all the spelling and punctuation mistakes. Instead, say something positive about the work and, if you must make corrections, just choose one or two mistakes.

New Musical for St Paul’s Mark it in your diaries – this is one event not to be missed Crazy for You is the ultimate feel-good musical. It blends romance with heartbreak, deception with trickery, and will have you laughing from the very first scene. It’s an exhilarating celebration of Gershwin music, the great Broadway musicals, and the amazing local talent we have to offer. More than anything, it’s all about spine-tingling, hair-raising exhilaration as you tap your feet to the beat. And with St Paul’s strong performing arts tradition, everything is polished to a flawless high gloss. There really are no compromises… The musical comedy has been in planning for over a year, with rehearsals starting in August 2017. No shortcuts have been taken, with props and costumes on hire from Opera Australia. Staging, sound and lighting equipment is all being hired, and industry professionals are providing production management assistance. Crazy for You. You’d be nothing short of crazy to miss it. Lions March into Coles for Army In a first for the Lions Club of Emu Plains, and in conjunction with the new Coles store at Glenmore Park Town Centre, shoppers were provided with an opportunity to support the Salvation Army in providing food to those less fortunate in our community at Easter. Lions asked Coles shoppers to buy an extra can, packet, jar or bottle of non-perishable food from their normal shopping list and place the ‘additional’ item or items, in the designated Lions trolleys. Lions collected all the donated food and passed it on to the Salvation Army in Luttrell Street, Glenmore Park. The Salvation Army will, in due course, provide the donated goods to their various programs including Homelessness, Youth Services and other community needs. Major Gary Smith of the Salvation Army, Glenmore Park, commented “It is heartwarming to see both corporate and volunteer services working together, and we thank both parties for their efforts in this project”. The genuine community effort was thanks to Brent Mattingly, Store Manager at Coles Glenmore Park, Emu Plains Lions and the Salvos and ran for 3 days and yielded 11 shopping trolleys full, with an estimated value of $4,000. Emu Lions President, Alan Cooper, commented “The shoppers at Coles Glenmore Park, were eager to help the Salvo’s especially at Easter”. Signage was kindly provided by Click Media, Penrith.

GAME REVIEW

MARIO KART 8 DELUXE!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the expanded version of Mario Kart 8. There are 43 different characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there are battle modes that consist of 5 mini games. They are balloon battle, renegade roundup, bob-omb blast, coin runners and shine thief. Balloon battle: You have 5 balloons to start off with and the aim of the game is to throw power-ups at your opponents to pop their balloons. Renegade roundup: There are two teams, cops and renegades (robbers). The cop’s job is to catch all the renegades with piranha plants and throw them into jail before the time runs out and the renegade’s job is to escape the clutches of the cops. Bob-omb blast: This is the same as balloon battle, but instead of throwing power-ups you throw bombs! Coin runners: You collect as many coins as possible before time runs out. Shine thief: There is a shine in the middle of the course and you must steal it for exactly 20 seconds to win. There are 23 different power-ups, such as the green shell, triple green shell, red shell, triple red shell and the crazy 8. Another fun mode is grand prix, where you can choose 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, mirror (which is the track backwards) and 200cc. There are 8 different cups, all consisting of 4 races. Once you choose 1, you race in the 4 races. At the end of each race, you receive points between 1 - 15 points, depending on your ranking. I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 4. I rate this game 10 out if 10 (only available on the Nintendo Switch).

An Inspector Calls An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley is the first of two productions by Glenbrook Player’s for 2018. Set in the fictional British Midlands industrial town of ‘Brumley’, in 1912, just as the Titanic is due to sail, the play consists of three acts and runs the course of one tumultuous evening. The play begins as the bourgeois Birling family celebrate the engagement of the eldest daughter, Sheila, to the handsome and well-connected Gerald Croft. The arrival of a mysterious police inspector interrupts this happy scene with unwelcome news that a young woman, recently destitute, has died in the infirmary. Through clever and unrelenting interrogation, the inspector unravels the part each family member has played in the young woman’s life and reveals how each character may be implicated in her death. Inspector Goole (John Bailey), Mr Arthur Birling (Christopher Bancroft), Mrs Sybil Birling (Jill Hogwood), Sheila Birling (Julie Thode), Gerald Croft (Gabriel Mark Pope) and Eric Birling (Josh Stojanovich) feature in the production. Directed by Cassandra Strassioto, An Inspector Calls opens at Glenbrook Community Theatre on Friday 11 May, with further performances on the 12th, 18th and 19th May. Booking information can be found at glenbrookplayers.com.au or https://www.facebook.com/glenbrookplayers.

NSAIDS - How Do They Alleviate Acute Pain? First let’s define acute pain vs chronic pain to see how they differ. The Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine states that acute pain: 1. Is produced by a specific disease or injury 2. Serves a useful biologic purpose (to warn the body that something isn’t right) 3. Is associated with skeletal muscle spasm and sympathetic nervous system activation 4. Is self-limited (stops after the cause is removed and healing has taken place) They have a lengthy definition of chronic pain. Put simply however, ‘chronic pain’ is pain that started but, after an abnormally long time, hasn’t stopped. Interestingly they say ‘chronic pain serves no biologic purpose’ - obviously untrue. Chronic pain serves to tell the sufferer that damage is ongoing & that the cause still needs fixing. So how are NSAIDs valuable in acute pain? Last month we saw how, after damage, a good number of compounds are made by body cells at or near the site of injury. These compounds are released into the surrounds and into the blood stream as a signal to immune and other cells to come in to fight bugs that may be involved, clean up damaged cells & tissue materials, and then enact repairs to the area. One can think of tissue damage being the start-up of (not just one but) many-many giant & complex domino cascades – all at the same time. In technical terms these are known as inflammatory ‘signal cascades’. While damage continues, damage signal

cascades will continue to be started, until eventually (hopefully) the cause of the damage has been eliminated and all damage signals stop. At this point, cells release different compounds that start different cascades that now promote repair. Healing then commences, tissue is repaired & function begins to return to normal. In simple terms, the inflammatory cascade aims to remove the cause of damage first, while aiding mess-clean-up. The inflammatory cascade itself then kick starts the antiinflammatory cascade which aims to repair tissue, returning it to normal function. Pain follows the same format. It begins at or soon after injury triggered by the damage signals, continues during clean-up & repair processes, finally subsiding once healing is complete. NSAIDs do two main things: 1. They prevent the start-up of one major arm of the inflammatory cascade i.e. they stop production of pro inflammatory prostaglandins - chemicals that increase pain 2. They kick-start immediate production of antiinflammatory prostaglandins to lower pain NSAIDs chemicals do this by attaching themselves to enzymes called cyclooxygenase (COX for short). Once attached to an NSAID, a COX enzyme, stops making pro inflammatory prostaglandins & starts making anti-inflammatory prostaglandins instead. This strategy often works very well short term. Next month we’ll see why long-term‌ things aren’t so simple.

Give Mum an Experience Remember this Mother's Day

to

aspiration and ambition, the triumphal entrances and brutal exits, as all is laid on the line for Rome in this masterpiece of intrigue and treachery. Fancy a spectacular canapé - Yellow Yellow Sometimes Blue is another brand-new play by Q Theatre, that mixes stories, politics and drinks for a raucous party of modernist mischief. Inspired by the history of Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest, mum will get the chance to peer through the eyes of ‘the help,’ for a fresh take on Emu Plains in the 1950s. And for those mums who love all things fine, The Joan continues to offer a deep and enriching experience of music, with The Summit Fine Music Series. Australia’s angel, soprano Mirusia and her own Chamber Orchestra will wow the audience with her command of opera, musical theatre, pop and jazz styles in an exquisite winter evening performance on Saturday 30 June. Four-Colour-Season takes a journey from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons to new Australian music in a selection of song and indigenous dance to match the patterns and movement of the Earth and the Aboriginal experience of the seasons. Not to be missed, The Joan’s Concert Hall stage will be filled with not one, not two, not three… but eight grand pianos – an orchestra of pianos – with some of Australia’s most brilliant musicians at the helm. With Tamara-Anna Cislowska on board as Music Director, Eight Grands will be an evening of sophistication and indulgence mum will love. For the art lover, take mum to Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest at Emu Plains and enjoy the free Autumn exhibition –tactile and 5x5 and a lovely morning tea or lunch at the onsite Café at Lewers. Bookings and reservations can be made for Mother’s Day for 8am, 10am, 12noon and 2pm by calling the café 4735 4265. Can’t decide on what shows mum may like? it's not too late to pick up a great four or six show subscription to The Joan for Mum this Mother’s Day – give her the gift of time for herself and the enjoyment and mindfulness that come with a night out and a live performance! We wish mothers everywhere a happy Mother's Day for Sunday 13 May, and we look forward to welcoming you to The Joan and Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest to celebrate.

Cupples Strong Finish Falls Short in NSWVGA Stroke-Play Championships Local senior golfer and 2017 champion Laurie Cupples (Leonay GC) has narrowly missed defending his title in the 2018 NSW Veteran Golfer's Association Stroke-Play Championships, falling to Camden Lakeside GC scratch marker Ricky Allison by just two shots. Cupples trailed second-round leader Allison by a staggering nine shots and perennial champion Col Kenning (Kiama GC) by six shots, at the end of the second day's action, following rounds at both Richmond GC and Dunheved GC. The impressive Stonecutters Ridge GC was the venue for the final day of the event and Cupples showed his pedigree, shooting the second-lowest round of the day to overtake all but Allison in the race to the title. A capacity field of 144 golfers had entered for the three-day tournament, including two international visitors in Sam Smaile (Royal St George GC, England) and Russ Vatcher (Stoneridge GC, Idaho, USA). Robert Lewis (Windsor) took out the Nett title, just one shot ahead of Kenning. Sponsorship from The Richmond Club, Frasers Property, Guardian Funerals, NSWVGA and Warren Saunders Insurance Brokers allowed the organisers to award an impressive total of thirty-one individual prizes. Article: Noel Rowsell (www.photoexcellence.com.au)

Wisdom for Life Have you ever wished you could go back and make a decision over again? The pages of history are littered with examples like this one: “We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.” By Decca Recording Co. rejecting the Beatles, 1962; or this one: “X-rays will prove to be a hoax” by Lord Kelvin, President of the Royal Society, 1893. Nobody wants to look like a fool, let alone be proved one! We need wisdom, wisdom for life. Did you know then, that the Bible has loads to say about wisdom? There are whole books of wisdom in it, including the book of Proverbs. Why not check Proverbs out for yourself. Grab a modern version of the Bible, or google it. And as you read, ask

12 May 2018 www.emuleonaygazette.com.au

yourself, ‘Does Proverbs touch on the things that matter most in life?’, and, ‘Does its wisdom line up with my experience of how the world works?’ Now the proverbs aren’t promises, they reflect general principles. But here’s the thing, Proverbs makes this incredible claim, the claim that trusting and obeying the God of the Bible is the beginning of wisdom. It claims that relying on him is where it’s all at, and that this is the foundation on which to build a wise life. Do you want to be wise? Maybe Proverbs is the place to find wisdom for life. And to help you, you can always listen to some sermons on it from our facebook or web page.
