FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

Hope for Life My wife Louise and I enjoy watching movies together, but there’s one I could never get her to watch. It’s Titanic. She just wasn’t interested. She knew how it ended. It didn’t matter what James Cameron did with the story, it still had to sink, and 1500 plus people had to die. When she knew the ending was hopeless, she just wasn’t willing to get involved. On the other hand, one of her favourite movies is Apollo 13. If you remember it, it’s the one about the moon mission that went wrong, and how the crew nearly died for one reason after another. But she loves it. Do you know why? Because she knows they make it back alive. There’s hope. And we need hope. I’m not talking about wishful thinking either. I’m talking about real confidence that we’re going to make it in the end. When we’re faced with hardship, and suffering, when we see those we love doing it tough, and we know we will ultimately gaze into the eyes of death itself, our lives and relationships are too important for all we see to be all there is. God not only knows this. He offers us hope. Coming off the back of Easter as we are, we can remember that Jesus’ resurrection in the past offers us hope for the future. It’s a hope for all who turn back to God and put their trust in him. Peter, Jesus’ disciple, he put it like this, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.” (1 Peter 1:3-4)

It’s been the local for the residents of Emu Plains and Leonay for decades, and now Emu Plains Sporting and Recreation Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Whilst the golf course opened in 1939, the Sports Club was officially licenced in 1969, back when John Gorton was Prime Minister, The Beatles did their last live performance, and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. Locally, Emu Plains had only just transferred from Blue Mountains Council to Penrith City Council six years before and the opening of the F4 Freeway Bridge over the Nepean River was still four years away. Since then, the Club has been an integral part of the local community. Emu Sports Club’s CEO, Andrew Gardner said, “We are truly a community Club. The Club wouldn’t be here today if not for the support of our members and the local community. It’s a relationship we appreciate, as the support we receive means that we, in turn, can keep giving back, and continue to support local schools, charities, community groups and sporting groups”. Celebrations for the anniversary have been planned for each Saturday in May. “We have a lot planned, from cash giveaways, a family holiday to the Gold Coast and a 50% discount night in the bistro, culminating with our Gala Day on 25th May” continued Mr Gardner. “We also have a golf day and celebration dinner on Friday 17th May” he added. Full details of the anniversary celebrations are found on Emu Sports Club’s Facebook page, or you can contact the Club on 4735 5300. The Emu and Leonay Gazette would like to congratulate Emu Plains Sporting and Recreation Club on an amazing 50 years! “Emu Sports Club has been an important part of the local community. We have watched it grow over the years and we look forward to the next 50 years. Happy 50th Birthday” said Belinda Sanders, Editor of the District Gazette. Mother’s Day is just around the corner and although this is usually a time of celebration, it isn’t always a joyous time for everyone. For those who are not fortunate enough to have their mum around to spoil, spend the day with, call or text, the day can be somewhat challenging and isolating. Thankfully, there is a brand new organisation that supports and assists Australian girls and women whose mums have sadly passed away. Motherless Daughters Australia is a not for profit organisation that was founded by two Victorian women, who had also lost their mum, with the hope of making a difference to the lives of those who experience mother loss. The organisation connects and unites women in the same shoes through a supportive online platform and through events and functions to facilitate new friendships and support networks. There is talk of future plans to extend their supportive reach to sons and fathers. Whilst Motherless Daughters Australia is there to support women through the everyday and life’s major milestones, they know that receiving comfort and support during the lead up to Mother’s Day and on Mother’s Day is also very important and can be very therapeutic. The annual and signature event hosted by the not for profit organisation is a series of pre Mother’s Day High Teas which will run in four major cities this year – one is in Sydney on Sunday 5th May. It’s a lovely afternoon and opportunity to meet and mingle with other motherless daughters during the lead up to Mother’s Day. A chance to talk to those who ‘get it’ and who show the utmost empathy and compassion in a way that is purely indescribable unless you’ve experienced it. Women enjoy a glass of champagne, indulge in delicious food and engage in some of the most uplifting, reassuring and validating conversions whilst honouring their mum and making some special connections. Breaking Down the Walls

It’s Showtime!

What started as a conversation between two local mates late last year has now grown into Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk, a group that meets every week to enjoy the Great River Walk together, talk about men’s health and support one another. Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk meet at The Coffee Club – Nepean River, Tench Avenue in Penrith, on Thursday each week at 5:45pm for a 6:00pm sharp lap of The Great River Walk. The 6.4-kilometre trek is a great opportunity to meet new friends or reconnect with old ones. “The group was thought about late in 2018 after a chat I had with Kevin Canning. We noticed as we have gotten older that a lot of guys tend to have similar problems. Most men don’t realise how common their problems are and rarely talk to anyone about them” said Paul Wallace, Group Organiser and local resident. The men’s group have been embraced by the local community, with over 70 men joining in some capacity already. This has also been supported on social media with many praising the men’s health initiative to break the stigma surrounding mental health. “A lot of men traditionally don’t open up to anyone. Being active, listening or talking tends to make most men realise that they are not alone. Our group is all inclusive for men of all ages. From teenagers through, anyone is invited to come along” Wallace told the Emu and Leonay Gazette. They plan to have a monthly guest speaker from a men’s health organisation talk to the group. The organisation ‘Like Mind’ will be their first guest speaker on Thursday 9th of May at The Coffee Club – Nepean River. If you would like to join Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk or would like more information about the group, you can find them on Facebook. PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com I want to tell you about something I saw on the television a few years ago. It’s a story that demonstrates the difference between parenting through connection and using punitive discipline. It was a reality show made in America. I cannot recall the name of the show, something like “Worlds Apart”. It was a series where an American family would leave their modern, fast-paced, disconnected, frozen dinner every night style of life, and go for a week to live in a remote village overseas. On one of these shows, a family of Mum, Dad, and three children, went to a small and remote village in one of the African nations. The villagers lived a traditional life in every way, in the desert with their cattle. There was one well in the village to provide drinking water for everyone. Somehow, one of the American boys, perhaps about 8 years old, did something to contaminate the drinking water in the well. Thus, the women of the village had to walk with their children and babies many hours to retrieve drinking water in pots on their heads. How do you think the villagers responded to this incident? After the incident, the American parents were very angry and embarrassed at their son’s actions. The village chief was a very kind and gentle man. The villagers were very kind and gentle. The chief asked the boy to walk with him. They walked into the desert together. When the chief and the boy returned maybe an hour later, the American parents asked their son what the chief had said to him. The boy said that the chief said nothing and he himself had said nothing but they just walked together. Then the boy broke down and sobbed his heart out. The family asked the chief if that’s how he sorts out problems in the village, and he replied that he takes people for a walk in the desert, saying something like “we go out and come back”. After ensuring their survival needs are met, humans have a fundamental need to belong. In this village, survival and belonging were regarded as the same. Go gently and kindly.

Little Big Hitters The Blue Mountains Baseball and Softball Club’s Under 11 Boys Monkeys have just completed a great season of teeball, winning the Penrith City Softball Association Competition whilst having lots of fun along the way. The Monkeys lost just one game this season, thanks to their talented team of 11, which included local brother and sister Riley and Tasmyn Wood. For big brother Riley, who is 7, it was all about hitting home runs. “I like getting home on the bases” he said. “We just have fun. We worked together really well” added Tasmyn, who is 6. With the popularity of teeball on the rise for both boys’ and girls’ teams, Riley and Tasmyn’s mother Shireen Wood was proud of the team. “This year’s team was a very talented bunch of kids. Most of the players are off to representative teams and mod ball for the next season. Big thanks to their wonderful supportive coaches Jason and Lara for this season” explained Shireen. “The joy of seeing Riley and Tasmyn contribute to the team’s success and watching them have pride in their game, their club and their team has been amazing. Teeball really is a great sport” ended Shireen.

Lung Disease doesn’t Discriminate The month of May is Lung Health Awareness Month. Lung disease affects almost 1 in 3 Australians and is responsible for 1 in 7 deaths, however many people tend to ignore the signs and symptoms, often not doing anything about it for far too long. We are all are used to thinking about our heart and skin health, but our lungs are equally important. It’s time we made our lung health a priority as well. This Lung Health Awareness Month, Lung Foundation Australia is urging Australians to stop guessing what may be causing symptoms like breathlessness or fatigue, and to learn how to recognise and act upon the symptoms of lung disease. Most of us never stop to think about our breathing, it’s just something we do. Research shows that almost half (46%) of all Australians rarely or never think about their lung health. Despite this, almost two-thirds of Australians (68%) reported that they have experienced at least one lung related health issue. There are a few simple things you can do to help look after your lung health: • Make your life a smoke-free zone by quitting smoking and/or reducing your exposure to second hand smoke. • Wear appropriate protective equipment if you work in environments that expose you to the inhalation of dust, gas, fumes or chemicals. • Protect yourself from influenza and pneumonia by having the vaccinations. • Exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. • Practice good hand hygiene to minimise the spread of germs. Visit https://knowplanact.lungfoundation.com.au/ or find support for Rare Lung Diseases on Facebook at https://www. facebook.com/groups/203287517211000/

Living in a Fantasy Did you know that there’s a tiny piece of Middleearth hidden away right here in Emu Plains? Local husband and wife Gianluca and Paola Alimeni have designed and built their very own Hobbit inspired door at their home, leaving you to think that you have entered a fantasy world in the Middle Ages. The couple, who are both from Italy, share a common interest in ancient history. It is this interest that helped to inspire this amazing project come to life. “I started building this door about three months ago. We are still making small changes and adding refinements though, but the planning process (a husband and wife team effort) started a long time ago. There was no ready material I could get off the shelves and, as you can imagine, it was not easy to explain what I needed when going to the local hardware store” Gianluca said. “Even the lock needed to be altered. I made all the construction myself, with some help from my wife. We tried to utilise traditional methods such as bending the wood into shape. It was also important we retained the natural wooden look despite adding a splash of colour” he added. They both met at Macquarie University. Gianluca, a lecturer in Italian Studies, met Paola whilst she was undertaking a project at the university Museum of Ancient Cultures. It was love at first sight. Two weeks later, they were together. Three weeks later, Paola proposed to Gianluca. They have been married for just over three years. Gianluca plans to include more architectural features throughout the house, that will provide a sense of belonging to the Middle Ages. Their verandah already has a coffered ceiling and they hope to extend that to other rooms in the house. The furniture will also be in theme. “The fantasy element just adds more entertainment, especially as these days movies and tv series have strong historical bases and starting points. The Hobbit inspired door offers the opportunity to add creative warmth and individual features, while moving away from cold modern mass-produced styles” he ended.

Local Students Preserve River Bank The Year 3 students at Our Lady of the Way Emu Plains have been learning about the effects of weathering and erosion on our local environment. They were lucky to be invited to be part of the preservation of the Nepean River initiative by Justine Vella, Penrith Council's Bushland Management Coordinator. Last month, the Year 3 students began their day walking along the Nepean River with Justine, observing the erosion affecting the river bank. They found examples of erosion along the River Walk and identified the strategies the council is using to preserve the area. The students especially enjoyed examining and exploring the Leonay bank stabilisation work near Willow Way. Unfortunately, there was no sign of local resident, Wally the Wombat, who has tried very hard to remove the measures employed by council to preserve the area. The students from O.L.O.W finished the day by planting natives near Parkland Avenue, Leonay to protect the area from further erosion. They were met by Robert and Jenny from Penrith Council, who helped them assess the safety of the area before they planted the natives on the river bank. It was a wonderful experience for the students to be able to see examples of erosion so close to home and to identify what is being done to protect and preserve this beautiful area. The school was honoured for their students to be part of this preservation process. They would like to thank Justine Vella and her team from Penrith Council for such a rewarding opportunity. Removing the Biochemicals Lurking in your Muscles that cause Spasms & Pain? I am going to briefly interrupt our series on Paracetamol this month, because I came across an excellent study in the journal of Applied Physiology by Shah etal in 2005, the results of which can really help us to understand what underlies the pain & dysfunction of unhealthy muscle. Unhealthy muscle contains tight, painful areas. Physiologists call these ‘trigger points’, of which there are two types, ‘latent’ and ‘active’. Briefly: 1. a ‘latent’ trigger point is a ‘tight area in a muscle’ that is not painful unless pressed. Pressing leads to pain locally & sometimes also at sites called ‘referral’ points. 2. an ‘active’ trigger point has pain (local and/or referred) that is either: a. present constantly, or b. elicited simply by using the muscle 3. muscles containing trigger points are also usually tight, shortened, weaker, with altered nerve functions 4. Trigger points arise due to acute or chronic muscle overloading

5. If pain from an active trigger point worsens to become a persistent unrelenting deep ache, a person may be diagnosed with ‘myofacial pain syndrome’ By contrast, healthy muscle: 1. contains no trigger points 2. if pressed will yield easily & feel no pain, only pressure. Evidence suggests ‘dry needling’ benefits sore muscles. Inserting a needle into latent or active trigger points will cause the muscle to: 1. contract strongly & suddenly, a reaction called a ‘local twitch response’ (LTR), 2. produce a specific ‘LTR’ electrical signal measurable by an EMG machine. 3. often feel significantly less painful afterward In contrast healthy muscles (no trigger point) produce no LTR or EMG signals. So physiologists can use an EMG machine to confirm if a muscle is unhealthy (has a trigger point) or healthy (none). Read more on this next edition.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next month. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

Happy Mothers Day Enjoy being spoiled on Mothers Day on Sunday 12th May. Our Commitment to Give Back

At District Gazette, we have chosen to align ourselves with a charity that is very close to our hearts. We support the Lung Foundation Australia, by giving a percentage of all advertising revenue and hosting fundraising events to support Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, through their IPF Program. In memory of the late, courageous, strong and determined, Wendy Frame

Fast forward and here we are in May. The weather is cooling down to a crisp and fresh afternoon, almost deeming it necessary to don the bed socks and extra blankets. The month of May is Lung Health Awareness month. Anyone can get lung disease. As a charity partner and advocate of the Lung Foundation, see page 8 for more information on what you can do to look after your lungs. We've included one of [my] mums most favourite recipes on page 4, treat Mum this Mothers Day, or like me, get baking and enjoy a slice in her memory. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Every new day is another chance to make a change'
