Celebrating a Milestone! Last month, over 4,000 visitors helped celebrate a wonderful historical milestone from 200 years ago, when William Cox commenced the building of the road across the Blue Mountains. This was one of the most important achievements in our early colonial history. The day started with a function at Regatta Park arranged by Penrith City Council, where Cox descendants gathered for the re-enactment parade from the park to the Arms of Australia Inn Museum for the William Cox Historical Festival. At the festival there were speeches from Uncle Graeme Cooper, Mayor Ross Fowler, patron of the Nepean District Historical Society and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, Robert Bettington on behalf of the Cox descendants and local historian and songwriter, Jim Low sang a song about the building of the road. Entertainment included songs from Roger Corbett and Clare O’Meara from the Bushwackers Band, students from the Nepean School of Performing Arts, Tall Timbre Country and Western Band and the Penrith City Show Band. For the younger generation there were pony and wagon rides, an animal farm, bungee jumping, fun on the water with Nuts in Balls, tug-of-war competition, the old fashioned school room and lots more. It was certainly a great and memorable day for all!

FROM THE EDITOR
Here we are, at August! And what a hive of activity it has been. Many wonderful events and milestones have taken place in the last month, with many more on the cards for the months ahead. As the headlines of the terrible MH17 tragedy fill our newspapers, news feeds and daily conversations; our hearts hang heavy and our thoughts go out to all of those involved with loved ones abroad. Our cover story details the remarkable success of the William Cox Festival held last month, what a memorable moment in our history. Last month, I was fortunate enough to spend some time with our very own Brittanie Shipway, The Voice Australia entrant (Team Kylie!!); with a rare opportunity to get ‘Up Close & Personal’ read all about it on page 7. As we slowly edge toward Spring, our Health Expert Rhonda provides an insight on remedies for those ‘spring time symptoms’ on page 12; while Camille highlights the importance of RSPCA Cupcake Day in ‘Paws A While’ Next month we will bring you the latest and greatest with all that’s in-store for the Leura Gardens Festival; and don’t forget Father’s Day, the first Sunday of September! Sometimes, when things are falling apart; they may actually be falling into place. Enjoy your Community News!

City Park a Step Closer Penrith City Council will continue to investigate the merits of a City Park after a report was tabled at its Policy Review Committee Meeting. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the genesis for the creation of a city park began in 2006. “In 2006 Council adopted the Penrith City Centre Strategy which recommended a park to give the city a civic heart for community gatherings and celebrations,” Cr Fowler said. “Unlike the Macquarie towns of the era, Penrith was never surveyed with land allocated to specific uses such as a central park to meet the future civic needs of its population. “As Penrith’s city centre grows and we plan for a vibrant, economically robust regional city that will accommodate 12,000 new jobs and 10,000 new residents, our research and community consultation through Penrith Progression is pointing to the need for a civic heart.” Penrith Progression has been actively engaging the community through its workshops, seminars, forums and online development of ideas that explore and test how to transform the city centre into a better place to live, work and invest. Participants in the many forums and focus groups have raised the need for a local gathering space and a place for connection with other people and the environment. A review will be undertaken in the coming months to confirm what the park’s role could be in the future and how it could help shape the urban form of the city by acting as a catalyst for investment. The review will help to define how big the City Park should be according to the range and scale of uses, taking into account anticipated future growth of the City Centre. The concept of City Park is still in its early days of planning and will be subject to the outcomes of the City Park review and feedback from Penrith Progression. Feedback from both forums will be used to prepare a design master plan and funding plan for further community consultation.

FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN
Council Grants Wishes
Rev Roger Cunningham P: 4735 1001 E: office@emuplains.anglican.asn.au W: www.emuplains.anglican.asn.au
Penrith City Council is offering support to local non-profit community groups through small grants of up to $1200. The grants are available through Council’s Community Assistance Program (CAP) to support local community groups that provide services to residents in the Penrith Local Government Area. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the grants will help community groups deliver valuable programs to those in the Penrith area. “The program offers small grants for non-profit community groups to use toward holding a community event, undertaking a special project or purchasing equipment,” Cr Fowler said. “It can be tough financially in providing the services that many of the community groups offer. The Community Assistance Program enables Council to help support many local organisations and groups run valuable grass roots projects and activities. “It is a small contribution that can make a big difference to many in our community.” In 2013-14, Council approved 34 grant applications totalling $34,794 that enabled community groups to provide cultural inclusion activities, gardening classes and a nursery as well as neighbourhood celebrations for new residents. The annual funding round for CAP opened on 21 July and closes on Monday 18 August 2014. For more information visit Council’s Website at http:/// www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au or contact Council on 4732 7838.

Education for Life Last week was education week. And where would we be without knowledge and education? How would we communicate, add up, read, create or make as well as we do without it? And so many things we learn are building blocks to other things we can be taught and then do. So have you ever thought about how education relies on the order built into our world? Three plus two is always five, the seasons come reliably each year, and with the right calculations we can build buildings that will stand for decades, if not centuries. Many of the early scientists of modern history were confident of this order because of the God they’d met in the Bible. In fact it was His reliability, and the way he’d built that into creation that got them investigating and experimenting. They’d not only read of the experiences of God’s people over many years, but learnt what God was like as a creator – orderly and reliable. You could say it was knowing God that led many to explore knowledge of our world. In fact, knowledge of God and of His son Jesus gives not just facts for living, but wisdom for life. So knowledge is a great thing to pursue. Education can be a great servant to us as individuals, and for us together as a society. And while we’re going about the business of knowing, who wouldn’t benefit from more time spent getting to know the God who made us. Rev Roger Cunningham

Pets Charming Proves it’s a Dog’s Life Local resident Nicole Celeban is known as one of Western Sydney’s most successful Marriage Celebrants. What you didn’t know is that Nicole also has a soft spot for dogs and now owns Pets Charming, a business that specialises in play wear, every day wear, pyjamas, nighties, and onesies through to bridal wear and high end couture for dogs. Drawing from her experience as a Marriage Celebrant, the business also offers ‘doggie muttrimonials’, birthday parties and special events. That’s right, you now have the opportunity for your beloved pooch to tie the knot. “ I purchased Pets Charming in June this year. I love dogs, I love fashion, I love weddings and I love parties. This was a wonderful fit for me” said Nicole. Nicole has three ‘furkids’ herself, Darci, Chanel and Zahli, who are all female Cavalier King Charles
Spaniels. Nicole first visited Pets Charming last October whilst looking for bridal wear for her dog Darci’s marriage to Angus last year. Nicole is also involved with Nepean Therapy Dogs Inc and her dogs are regular visitors to Nepean, Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals. “My girls bring cheer to patients, staff and visitors. They’re transported through the wards in a gorgeous vintage pram. I suppose I’m now known as ‘The Crazy Dog Lady’, but it’s a title I’m proud to wear” she said. The favourite part of Nicole’s job is helping to select outfits that suit the personalities of both the dog and owner. Fittings are available and well behaved, friendly dogs are always welcome. Why not pamper your pooch and visit the Pets Charming showroom at 63 Parklands Avenue in Leonay. You can also check out the website www.petscharming.com.au or www.facebook. com/pets.charming. We Play Here, and Here and Here… Several exciting new playgrounds will be installed across the City in coming months. Six playgrounds will be upgraded with the latest, contemporary equipment in St Clair, Emu Heights, Erskine Park, Cranebrook (two), and Jamisontown as part of Council’s forward works programs. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said kids deserved the best play equipment Council could provide and our programs had seen nine playgrounds replaced in the past year alone. “In the coming financial year, another six playgrounds are being upgraded to include the latest in safe and creative play space design,” Cr Fowler said. One of the new playgrounds will be at the Jamison Road end of Tench Reserve, and because people come from across the city to visit the river, Council is asking the wider community what they’d like to see there. “Tench Reserve is very popular with families and can get very busy, particularly on weekends,” Cr Fowler said. “We’re replacing the older of two playgrounds with new equipment positioned closer to Jamison Road which will provide an alternative to the main playground and complement the bbqs and seating already there. “The community told us reinvigorating the public space around the River was a key aspiration when we developed the Our River Masterplan last year and a key principles was to develop a more active and vibrant river,” Cr Fowler said. “New play equipment will provide a fun and inviting way for our younger residents to enjoy the river.”

Age: 21 Where do you live? Mulgoa on a little farm with my Pa! How long have you been singing? Since I was six years old; I’ve always loved the greats, Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, and Barbara Streisand. When did you discover you had a passion for singing, and a talent to accompany it? It’s just something I’ve always enjoyed, and so I do it! I’ve been very lucky to have the support of friends and family from the very beginning. Without them, I would never have gotten as far as I have in the industry. Describe your experience on The Voice Australia? It was like a very intense workshop; I learnt so much from Kylie and the coaches, but also from the producers and everyone behind the scenes. So much goes into a show as big as The Voice Australia! What are your plans and visions for the future? You have to be ready for every opportunity in this industry, particularly in Australia. But in the meantime, I will perform my Cabaret right around Australia, starting here in my local community first. Expect sparkles!

Describe a typical day in the life of Brittanie Shipway after The Voice? My life is incredibly normal! The only difference is how busy I am; my phone never stops ringing or buzzing with emails. I’m essentially running my own business where the product is... Me! How strange... What have you learned from the experience, thus far? To keep pushing and working for what you want. Because at the end of the day, you are the one who has to live with your own decisions. Not the people who judge you! Who is your idol? My late Ma, Doreen Shipway. She was such an incredibly strong woman, who lived for others. And she was so wise! Any comments for the local community? All I can say is THANK YOU for the incredible support you’ve shown me since I was a little girl. I’ve loved every minute of living in such a beautiful community. Who needs city living?

MONEY MATTERS With Alex McKenzie - Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au
When Should I Start Planning to Retire? This is one of the most common questions I am asked, and the simple answer is as soon as possible. In reality for most of our working life there are priorities that take precedence ahead of our retirement so rightfully we direct our income to achieving these more immediate goals. As we go through life there are a number of stages that influence how we prepare for our retirement Accumulation Phase Whilst we are saving for or paying off our home, saving for holidays and education we can have one eye on retirement by giving our superannuation the attention it deserves. This involves ensuring our superannuation is in an appropriate fund and invested in line with our goals, a financial planner can assist in this process. Mandated employer contributions need to be treated as real money and paying the correct attention will ensure these savings are not eroded through mismanagement. Although retirement in this phase is a low priority, being savvy at this point can make a large difference at retirement age. Empty Nest and Mortgage Free This is the point that most of us have significant disposable income we can contribute to our retirement. Once our kids are off our hands or at least for the most part financially dependent, in general, our living costs reduce significantly. Furthermore our mortgage repayments are our biggest expense, so once this debt is paid we have significant cash surplus and the capacity to save increases dramatically. It is advisable to direct a significant
amount of this surplus cash flow to save for retirement. This is a perfect time to speak to an adviser at this point in your life. Age 55 When you turn age 55 a number of financial planning strategies become available that in many cases allow for you to increase your retirement savings without reducing cash flow. These strategies revolve around accessing your Super through a Pension and replacing taxable income with concessional taxed income. These strategies are further enhanced at age 60. With people living longer and the government wanting us to be less reliant on the Government pension, it is important for all of us to adequately prepare for our retirement and always at least have one eye on this goal throughout our working life. If you do not have a retirement plan or at least an excellent handle on your superannuation strategy then it is probably advisable to see a Financial advisor to develop a plan.

Mike Whitney Talks Tourism to Sydney’s Adventure Capital Well known travel program host Mike Whitney met with Penrith tourism operators at a networking event at Penrith Civic Centre in July. The former Australian one day and test cricketer hosts Sydney Weekender exploring travel destinations across NSW. The program, now in its 21st year, shows Whitney traversing the state profiling the best places to stay, eat and play. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said no one knows tourism in NSW like Mike Whitney. “Mike has travelled far and wide within the state showcasing many travel and tourist destinations. His knowledge of the tourism industry and what makes a great travel destination was welcomed by our own tourism operators,” Cr Fowler said. “Penrith is well established as an adventure destination where visitors can sky dive, go whitewater rafting, wakeboarding or get behind the controls of a jet aircraft. And soon adrenaline junkies will be able to race go-karts and participate in motorsport activities. “And there is so much more. Adventure is all about discovery. From the fire museum to the art gallery, award winning chocolate to great outdoor activities. Penrith has it all.” Whitney is no stranger to the attractions the adventure capital boasts, often visiting them during the course of filming Sydney Weekender. In June he tried his hand at indoor skydiving at Penrith’s latest attraction, iFly.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Standards I often wonder why adults have a one set of standards for themselves and another for the children. I recently observed a childcare worker yelling at a young fella because he was yelling at one of his playmates. It struck me as odd. If the young fella is not allowed to yell then why are you yelling at him? How did your yelling at him help him to learn how to do things differently? A parent in one of my parenting groups years ago, said “I hit the children for hitting each other, it doesn’t make any sense”. Dr Magda Gerber said “YOU are what you teach your children”. No truer words have been spoken. If your kids are yelling, swearing, getting angry where do they get the yelling/swearing/angry from? If they can’t tolerate frustration, who is role modelling that for them? And who is teaching them the alternative - how to calm and center themselves? Parents say to me that their kids don’t listen. I rather cheekily ask how much they listen to their children. Parents expect their children to jump up and do whatever they are asking them to do as soon as they ask it. But when you are sitting on the lounge watching your favourite TV show, or looking at Facebook, how quickly do you respond to your children’s requests? Parents expect their children to share. They rouse on the young one who won’t share his favourite truck. But if I asked to borrow your car how willingly would you hand over the keys? Adults aren’t that good at sharing so why should children be good at it, especially as they are egocentric and they really do think that the universe revolves around them. Being egocentric is developmental, it’s something that their brain controls, they actually can’t help it. They are not being ‘selfish’ to be nasty. If you have a house rule that food should only be eaten at the kitchen table, then are you following that rule too? The kids are looking at you, and pretty soon they learn what the word ‘hypocrite’ means. They will mutter under their breath that you don’t follow the ‘rules’ and then they will get into trouble for ‘back-chatting’ or being rude or not respecting their parents. When we make a mistake we pass it off as a mistake. When our child makes a mistake we say its “misbehaviour”, “naughty”, “seeking attention”. I’m not suggesting that children be given free reign. Your job as a parent is to set the rules for acceptable behaviour, to establish the limits and boundaries. It is absolutely OK for you to set limits and boundaries. Some of the most extreme child behaviour I have ever seen has come from parents who are too scared to limit their child’s behaviour. It’s also your job to be a good role model. Fifty years of research has shown that the best child behaviour is a result of parenting that has a high level of warmth (care, nurture, fun, hugs, listening, attention), and a reasonable level of communicated expectations.
Effective & Affordable Tutoring If your child needs some extra encouragement and motivation to reach their academic best, I would love to give them that extra support. With 5 years tutoring experience for primary school children and a fun and relaxed approach I can help your child reach their full potential. No term fees or contracts.
Initial lesson FREE, 45 minute and 1 hour weekly lessons available and I travel to you.
Call Sabrina, 0425723473 for Term 3 intake. Spots are limited.

HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Rhonda Rolfe Harmonising Health Ph: 0430 047 421 E: rhonda@harmonisinghealth.com.au W: www.harmonisinghealth.com.au
Spring is Just Around the Corner The frosty mornings and the cool winds are letting us now that winter is here, however the lovely sunny days are also a reminder that spring is just around the corner. For most of us that is a nice feeling which we all look forward to, but for others it means exposure to dusts and pollens which can bring on some unpleasant symptoms. Watery eyes, dripping noses, headaches, foggy thinking and a heavy feeling in your head can be quite uncomfortable. Imbalances within your energy system, or meridian system, can add to this discomfort. Clearing the blockages and balancing the meridian system can often give you relief from these symptoms, allowing you to enjoy various activities, which you may normally have to forgo. Kinesiology, EFT and Acupressure are simple, non-invasive, harmless but effective alternative therapies which work with the energy system to restore balance and harmony within the body. Using a combination of these therapies can result in reducing the spring time symptoms as mentioned. It is usually recommended that you avoid the pollens and dusts responsible for the symptoms for a couple of days after the therapy. Obviously once spring is here, that is difficult. Now is a good time to address these issues, before the onset of the new season. Your health and well being is your responsibility. Take action now and live life to the fullest.

The Border Collie Club was also there and Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital made a $500 donation to the Border Collie Cancer Research Project in coordination with Sydney University. Dr K D Katrina i Warren W and d Kelly K ll Gill held h ld their h i Thi Third dB Border d C Collie lli FFun Day at Castle Hill Showground on Sunday 6th July 2014. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital were the official veterinarian’s at the event. We had a huge purple tent at the showground and we had the best time. We offered free veterinary checks and answered many questions on the day. We talked our heads off and gave out information handouts on different diseases. Thankfully there were no accidents or injuries to any of the dogs on the day. We also had a free raffle to guess the number of lollies in the jar and the lucky winner received a huge gift basket full of doggie goodies. The kids loved the helium balloons. The Fun Day showcased a wide variety of Border Collie activities, including sheep herding, tricks, flyball, agility, treibball, nose work, heelwork to music, obedience and frisbee. Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill had a competition to find the fastest border collie over 50 metres. The winner of the Border Collie Fun Day race was Milly, who clocked 50 metres in just 4.55 seconds!! Second place went
A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise e awareness and money for the RSPCA. We are hosting a Cupcake Day att Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on n Monday 18th August 2014 between n 9am-7pm. Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet.
