Thinking of You, Dad!
“
A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.
”
Father’s Day is less than a month away, so kids, it’s time to start planning a very special day for that superman in your life. September 1st is the day when men, women and children all over Australia celebrate their dads for all the love, joy and excitement they bring into our lives. Of course it goes without saying that we appreciate our dads 365 days of the year, but this is the one day that you can actually tell him just how much he means to you. One unknown author wisely proclaimed, “A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.” So show your dad this Father’s day just how much you look up to him. Spare a thought for the kids who, for whatever reason, don’t have a dad around. For some, it’s a lonely and isolating day at school when the rest of the kids have their dads with them for the customary Father’s Day school activities. For others, it’s a bittersweet day, with memories of dads who passed too quickly from this world – no longer here to share our triumphs and tragedies, but always sharing a special place in our hearts!

It’s August – typically the coldest month of the year. To look on the bright side though, it means that the warmer weather is just around the corner. Also fast approaching is Father’s Day. The nation celebrates Father’s Day on Sunday 1st September, and your community Gazette wants to celebrate with you. Show the world how much that very special man means to you by sending in a photo or drawing of your dad, or maybe a poem or amusing little dad anecdote. Drop me an email – emueditor@districtgazette. com.au with photos attached and I’ll publish them in the September edition. We have some great reading for you this month, including a new regular article courtesy of Brett McVea of National Locksmiths. Brett will be sharing security tips each month - see page 6. Contours Emu Plains is running a Body Blitz program, to get you into shape just in time for spring - have a look on page 7. If you’re after a spot of culture, and a great night out to boot, head off to the theatre in Richmond later this month to see local Emu Plains actress performing in “Nine” – read all about it on page 5. Wishing all the dads out there a wonderful Father’s Day.
CHECK IT OUT!

On Friday 19 July, the Hyundai Motor Company of Australia gifted two new cars (an i20 and an i30 – $35,000 drive away value) to the Trade Training Centre of McCarthy Catholic School. College principal, Ms Robyn Meddows, described it as ‘a fabulous contribution to the education of the college’s automotive students’. David Bradbury MP for Lindsay and Assistant Treasurer Minister for competition Policy and Consumer Affairs, complimented Hyundai on its commitment to local education which paralled the Federal Government’s commitment to providing opportunities for apprentice and traineeship training. ‘To be able to work on a brand new vehicle ensures students can have experience with recent vehicles, this is a win for everyone,’ he said.

Mr Scott Nargar, Hyundai Product Planning Manager, accompanied by Mr Bill Thomas, PR General Manager Marketing, presented the cars. Mr Nargar commented on the success of a previous gift of a car and indicated Hyundai’s ongoing support for the college. Mr Craig Dickinson of the NSW Motor Traders Assoc. (McCarthy Automotive Training Partner) was delighted with the training opportunities created by the new cars. The vehicles were formally accepted by Antonio Auddino, College Captain and Ben Kean, SRC Representative, TTC. Mikaela Axiak provided a Students’ Response to Hyundai’s terrific gift. Quite obviously McCarthy TTC Centre automotive students are thrilled with the new Hyundai cars and ‘itching’ to get to grips with technicalities and practical mechanics. The TTC offers senior secondary students the opportunity to attain their Higher School Certificate (HSC) and complete the equivalent of a first year apprenticeship including outcomes towards a Certificate III qualification in their chosen trade. Trades offered for 2014 include: Automotive – Light Vehicle, Bricks and Block, Electro Technology, Carpentry, Hairdressing, Childrens Services, Engineering, Plumbing and Landscaping. Beauty Therapy may also be offered.
Sameh Awad – Sam’s Drycleaning & Alterations
Sameh Awad is very excited about his new Drycleaning and Alterations business in Emu Plains. He opened for business 3 months ago, in a great location, right on the Great Western Highway. Sameh previously owned a similar business in Town Hall, however he made the decision to move his work closer to home so he can spend less time away from his wife and two young children, 10-year-old Nicholas and 7-year-old Joyce. Sameh and his family moved to Australia from war-torn Egypt three years ago, and has embraced the Australian culture and lifestyle with open arms. “Life is good in Australia,” Sameh said. “This country is full of nice people, respectful people.” Sameh’s brother Ayad has been living in St Clair for the past 12 years, where he owns a similar drycleaning & alterations business. Sam’s Drycleaning & Alterations is open 6 days a week, 9am to 5pm (closed Sundays) and he is happy to help you with your alterations including trouser & dress hemming; replacing zippers; jacket sleeve alterations. Sam also offers a 3-day turnaround on dry cleaning, a shirt laundry service and ironing. Call in to see Sam, and if you mention you saw him in the “Spotlight”, he’ll give you a 10% discount on any of his services!

Traversing the Teens Being a teen can be an exciting and sometimes a frightening time of life. Maybe for parents too! There are so many new things to try and to explore and work out. Among them “Who am I?”, “Who am I apart from my parents?”, “Who do I want to be?” and “How should I treat others?” They’re important questions and so it’s not surprising God hasn’t left us in the dark as to the answers. Actually, I was travelling in London recently, a place I’ve never been before. But it was great to have a map on my phone that could tell me where I was, show me the place where I wanted to go, and then how to get there into the bargain. In the same way the Bible speaks to teens and their parents about where we are, where we ought to head, and how to get there. The Lord Jesus Christ is at the centre of it all, and He has some great answers for teens and all of us. We were made by God, to love and serve God, and yet He has surpassed anything we could have done in loving and serving us. Everything else, and the very practical advice of how that works itself out day by day, fills the Bible’s pages. For that reason we at EPAC want to spend lots of time and energy helping teens learn from the Bible so they can navigate these years and grow into the adults God wants us to be. We run Epic youth group on Friday nights at 6.30-8.30pm for years 7-12 (and year 6 joining on 24th August), Fuel for years 6-8 on Sunday mornings at 9.30-10.45am and run a lunch time group at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High on Friday lunch. Everyone is welcome!

Richmond Players, the Hawkesbury’s premier producer of theatrical entertainment, will next month bring to the stage “Nine”, a sparkling Broadway musical featuring an array of talent from this region and beyond. “Nine” centres around Guido Contini, a famous Italian film director reaching a crisis point: he is stumped for the subject of his next film, and he is rapidly losing the struggle to juggle dramatic relationships with the various women in his life: his wife, mistress, leading lady, mother, producer, critic, and more. “Nine” is a musical predominantly in the key of “feelgood”, with both humour and dramatic depth in Guido’s attempts to manage the conflicting demands of the women in his life. All of this comes with a dazzling sequence of show-stopping Broadway-style musical numbers, including ballads, humorous satire, big chorus spectacles and dramatic numbers. Bringing all this to life is an exceptionally strong cast, from the children playing “Little Guido” and his friends in flashback, to the women’s chorus, who in 4-part harmony deliver a thrilling tour-deforce of female choral capabilities. Richmond Players last year took on the somewhat obscure and unusually challenging rock musical “Chess”. That turned into a critical and box office success, with disappointed would-be audience members turned away from sell-out performances. With tickets now open for “Nine”, it is strongly advisable to get in early to avoid similar disappointment. Many of the same team return for “Nine”, whilst welcoming a raft of talent hitherto unknown to the Richmond School of Arts stage. This includes rising young Director Paul Smith, who brings with him years of experience in community and professional music theatre and opera, including playing lead roles and serving on the production team for Blue Mountains Musical Society productions including “Les Miserables”, “The Sound of Music” and “Orpheus in the Underworld”. The show will also feature Emu Plains resident Tania Lewis playing the proprietor of an Italian spa, who sings one of the show’s biggest numbers, a rollicking satire of Euro-national stereotypes called “The Germans At The Spa”. Tania was last seen to local audiences as Sister Bertha in “The Sound of Music”, Blue Mountains Musical Society’s sell-out success of 2009. There will be only seven performances of “Nine”: opening night, Saturday 3rd August, then matinee and evening shows on Saturdays 10th, 17th and 24th August. For all bookings please go to www.richmondplayers.com. au, or phone the enquiry line on 8006 6997. – Written by Naomi Degabriele.

SECURING YOUR WORLD
With Alex McKenzie – Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au
Where Would You Like to be in 5 Years Time?? People have a perception of financial planning being for retirement, or simply as super and insurance. While these are all important components of financial planning, there are many more services your financial planner is able to offer. As discussed in my earlier blogs your financial advisor is able to provide advice to guide you through your life events, many listed on our webpage. http://futurefinancialservices.com.au/life-events Sometimes it is not a specific event that for which you would like advice, but a more holistic view, such as where would I like to be in 5 years, A financial advisor can help with this by developing a 5 year plan. The first step in any financial plan is identifying goals you would like to achieve. Some of these goals are specific, a recent client I saw wanted to go to New York and upgrade their house, and other common goals include things like buying a house or paying it off, saving for your kids education or have enough money to retire. A good financial planner will assist you in identifying those goals in the fact finding process. Once the goals are identified a financial planner will be able to assist in putting a plan is place to achieve them. A lot of the ideas are not out of the box, but simply putting a process in place that keeps you on track to achieve your goals. Sometimes they can be a simple as starting a savings plan with a portion of your income dedicated to achieving your goal. Most people find it easier to save into a plan dedicated to “New York” rather than some abstract goal of having more money in the future. Further to the process being in place there are also technical considerations, things such as taxation, ownership and investment considerations. Once your plan is in place it is important to monitor that you are on track to achieve your goals and check your progress. Your situation will change as will your goals, your plan will need change to reflect the new situation. This review process will ensure that not only are you on track to achieve your goals, but always have an eye to the future. Simply having an idea where you would like to be in 5 years, and having a plan to achieve that is likely to see you advancing financially, if you would like to make an appointment to see us about developing your own 5 year plan please contact Future Financial Service on 4727 6588 or check out our website If you need assistance in getting your superannuation under control please feel free to contact us at... http://futurefinancialservices.com.au

The common question that we are asked after a break-in is, “How can we secure our sliding glass door better?” It doesn’t actually take a lot to make your door more secure. A good old trick that works really well is to measure up your sliding door track, then go to your local hardware store and get a piece of metal rod or wooden dowel, then ask them to cut the rod or dowel to your measurements. Once you get home, simply slide the rod into position and that will prevent the moving door from sliding. Another good Security product to install on your sliding door is a Lockwood 680 Patio Bolt. They are very affordable and it gives your door a more of a tidy look and they are Insurance Approved. If you would like more information don’t hesitate to call National Locksmiths on 1300 897 170
New Flag for Emu Scouts On 16th July, the Joey mob of the 1st Emu Plains Scouts troop were delighted to witness the presentation of a new Australian flag by the Hon. David Bradbury. The troop celebrates it’s 75th anniversary this spring, and this is the first time since its inauguration that a Joey Mob has been formed. If you have a child aged 6 - 8 years, who might be interested in joining the Emu Plains Joey Mob, please call the troop leader, Mark Belcher on 0422 477 247. “If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I’d take more hikes and fly more kites. I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I’d do more hugging and less tugging.” – Diane Loomans Which do you do most of – hugging or tugging? Touch is so very important for humans. Psychotherapist, Virginia Satir, says that we need four hugs per day for survival, eight hugs per day for maintenance, and twelve hugs per day for growth. Tiny babies that have all of their needs attended to but don’t receive touch, affection, and attention are at risk of dying from ‘failure to thrive’. It’s so easy to touch and hug our little ones because they are so cute and climb all over us a lot of the time. But older kids need hugs too, just as much as the little ones. They need hugs and positive attention more than they need iPads, iPods, and Minecraft. Humans are first and foremost social and emotional beings, not logical or rational. We are very good at building bridges, and spaceships, and super computers, but essentially we all have the need to belong – to other people. I see so many kids, lost in the technological world, but struggling socially and emotionally because what they really need is their parents’ attention and affection. The Commonwealth government recommends that children aged between 5 and 18 years should have no more than 2 hours of screen time (from all sources) per day (http://raisingchildren. net.au/articles/screen_time.html). Attention is a good thing. It’s a survival mechanism. If your child can’t get attention from the most important person in her world (that’s YOU), who is he or she going to get it from? How much of that attention is positive and how much is negative? For every negative way of parenting there is a positive way of parenting. As Diane Loomans so eloquently says, she would do less correcting and more connecting. What is filling your children’s hearts and minds?

WHAT’S COOKING?
DIY WORK SHOP AUG 25TH PENRITH 2 PM - 5PM
Ginger Golden Syrup Pudding
Warm up your winter cooking and spice up your life with a hint of ginger.
• Serves 6 Ingredients 5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled 150g butter, softened 2/3 cup caster sugar 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour, sifted 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, sifted 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/3 cup milk 1/2 cup golden syrup Custard, to serve Method 1. Lightly grease a 6 cup-capacity pudding basin (with lid). Using the lid as a guide, cut a circle from baking paper. Set aside. 2. Finely grate 1cm of the ginger (1teaspoon). Slice remaining ginger into matchsticks. 3. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating to combine. Add grated ginger. Stir to combine. Sift half the flour, baking powder and cinnamon over butter mixture. Stir to combine. Add half the milk. Stir to combine. Repeat with remaining flour, baking powder, cinnamon and milk. 4. Combine golden syrup and sliced ginger in a bowl. Spoon mixture into bottom of prepared basin. Top with batter. Smooth surface. Cover with baking paper. Secure with lid. Place an inverted saucer in a large saucepan. Sit basin on saucer. Pour boiling water into saucepan until halfway up side of basin. Cover saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to medium-low. Gently simmer for 1 hour 30 minutes, adding more boiling water as needed. 5. Carefully lift basin from saucepan. Remove lid and paper. Turn pudding onto a serving plate. Serve with custard and enjoy!

PAWS A WHILE We are Expanding!!!
With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
Thank you to all of our clients and furry friends who have helped us to expand our business. It is hard to believe that only 3 and 1/2 years ago, we were a one veterinarian practice! We have steadily built up the business to employ a second veterinarian (Erin) and extra nurses. We are now about to employ a third veterinarian. To accommodate the new veterinarian, we will be building a new consultation room. So the builder and plumber will be hard at work to build the new room within the next month. Feel free to drop in and check out the new facilities. Again, thank you for your patronage, we truly appreciate the friendships and referrals to your friends. Without you we would not be growing!
Open Day 2013
We are starting to organise this year’s Open Day. Our celebrity guests in past years have included Dr Chris Brown in 2011 and Dr Katrina Warren in 2012. They are hard acts to follow. I wonder who will be coming to this year’s Open Day?? You will have to wait and see!! We are planning the same fun things as the previous years, including jumping castles, sausage sizzle, dog competitions, face painting, hospital guided tours and lots of stalls. Watch this space for the celebrity and the date.
RSPCA Cupcake Day
A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We are hosting a Cupcake Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on Monday 19th August 2013 between 9am-7pm. Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet. We have made ‘pupcakes’ which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs. If you are unable to make it here on the day, then you can still contribute to the RSPCA via an online donation.
Vote for Us in the 2013 Penrith City Local Business Awards!

Studying in Style In 2011, a new initiative, called ‘The Study Lounge’ commenced in Emu Plains specifically aimed at supporting Higher School Certificate students in the region. The Study Lounge again opened last year with both community support and sponsorship from local businesses. The aim of Study Lounge is to provide a quiet, supportive, and relaxing environment for HSC students to further their private studies. As in previous years, a small team of volunteers from Emu Plains Community Baptist Church have rallied the support and participation of Penrith Council and local businesses that have contributed a variety of resources to this now valued study programme. Several teachers have also offered to tutor students during the Study Lounge opening hours. These resources, including the tuition, are all made freely available to students attending the Study Lounge. Web: http://hscstudylounge.org/emu-plains/
