Our Pets are Wishing for a Merry Christmas! It’s estimated that 13% of Australians will buy their pets a present at Christmas, so with this in mind, Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa is calling on local residents to also help animals in need by getting behind the Petbarn Foundation’s annual Giving Tree Appeal, which raises much-needed funds for animal shelters across the country. To get involved in the appeal local residents can simply purchase a $3, $5 or $10 Christmas decoration, which comes in two parts - one to hang on the Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa Giving Tree and one to take home for their very own family Christmas tree. All funds raised through the appeal will be donated by the Petbarn Foundation to local animal shelters including the RSPCA, Bendigo Animal Rescue, The Lort Smith Animal Hospital, Peninsula Cat Rescue, The Cat Corner, Cat Haven and The Australian Animal Protection Society. Last year over $209,000 was raised through The Giving Tree Appeal, and this year, the Petbarn Foundation is aiming to exceed this amount. “We know that many pet parents from all over Penrith City will be coming in store to buy presents for their furry or finned friends as part of family Christmas celebrations. While they’re here we’re encouraging them to get behind this fantastic cause,” said Debbie Harrison, Store Manager, Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa. “Buying a Christmas decoration for our Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa Giving Tree is an easy way to help support pets in need. Sadly, we see an increase in pets being housed at shelters after the festive season, so we are hoping to raise as much funds as we can to help support our local shelters looking after these animals,” said Debbie. The Petbarn Foundation Giving Tree fundraising promotion will run until 24 December, with the funds presented to the nominated charities in the New Year. From the Editor December is here. My, how the year has positively flown! And what a year it’s been, eh? The first part, a flurry of the usual activity, the constant chasing of tails and getting nowhere, the latter part marred by devastating fires, followed by torrential rains. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people affected by the bushfires and storms. May the Christmas season bring some hope and joy to your lives. Kids, while you’re busy making your lists for Santa, spare a thought (and maybe even a present) for all the underprivileged children in the world. And for the parents wondering what to buy, here’s a thought. Last Christmas I gave my teenage nieces and nephews Oxfam pigs and goats. They’re gifts that keeps giving – the kids got a card, and poor families in Vietnam and Mozambique received a pig or a goat. The presents were quite a hit with my socially aware young relatives. Such gifts are also a thoughtful departure from the old box of chocolates or candles for your school teachers. Visit oxfamunwrapped.com.au for many great gifting options. Enjoy your Christmas festivities, and have a very safe and happy New Year! We’ll be back in February to keep you up to date on all the goings-on around your neighbourhood!

A Bewitching Performance Salem, 1692. A time of conformity in a tight-knit puritanical society. A society where non-conformists weren’t tolerated and such recreational pursuits as dancing were strictly forbidden. This is the setting for American playwright Arthur Miller’s classic, “The Crucible”. Late November saw the Q Theatre magically transformed into the northeast American village, for Emu Heights Production’s interpretation of “The Crucible”. Emu Heights Productions’ Director Ian Zammit has a vision: “to engage and entertain Western Sydney through the production of exceptional theatre in Penrith”. This he has managed to achieve with gusto, drawing together a talented ensemble for an outstanding delivery of the timeless classic. Ian is a man on a mission: a mission to create opportunities in the performing arts by providing a platform for emerging theatre practitioners to collaborate with respected and experienced professionals. Four students from Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School were given such opportunities. 15–year-old Alexandra Smith and 16-year-old Ashleigh Powell played the parts of two of the girls behind the witch conspiracy, Betty Parris and Susannah Walcott. The experience was invaluable for both girls. Ashley said, “I learnt a lot through communication with the other actors which allowed me to experience different styles of acting and to develop my own craft.” Alexandra will never forget her experience. “I learnt a great deal about the commitment required to be in a professional production. It was the best experience of my life.” Mission: Provide Western Sydney students with local access to the performing arts. This he does by bringing productions relevant to HSC studies to life on stage, as well as providing opportunities for students to participate in the production side of the business. Two Nepean CAPA High students were lucky enough to be part of the behindthe-scenes performance. Kodie Amos

(Lighting Intern & Assistant Stage Manager) said, “I gained a lot of experience working with a professional cast and crew. I learnt how to properly rig the lights, but also how to sweep leaves!!” Fellow year 10 student William Matthews (Sound Intern & Assistant Stage Manager) said, “It’s been a great experience working with a professional crew on a professional production using professional gear. There’s a lot of pressure to not make mistakes because there is an audience who are paying money to see the production!” Mission: to move audiences with powerful and entertaining theatre productions. I think we’d be hard pressed to find an audience member who wasn’t moved by this dynamic and intoxicating portrayal of the Salem Witch trials of 1692. The opening night audience was treated to a perfectly timed applause of thunder that almost threatened to upstage the actors, if not for their superb talent. Costumes, set, lighting and music were all outstanding. Mission: to engage the community to support, critique and explore the dramatic art form through dialogue with theatre practitioners. The company succeeds in engaging the audience with their signature Q & A after each performance. An opportunity for the audience to explore deeper and forge greater understanding of what should be regarded as a necessary art, not a luxury. Your mission: to watch this space for info about Emu Heights Productions’ 2014 programme. (C) 2013 Sarah Connor

Not long ago, clairvoyant Robyn Caughlan went to visit Deirdre from Grandma’s Timeless Treasures in Emu Plains for a reading. Robyn was so impressed with Deirdre’s reading skills that an instant bond was formed. They both realised at that moment that they were meant to take a life journey together. From that first meeting, their partnership has evolved into Raphael’s Wellness & Healing Centre. Previously known as Grandma’s Timeless treasures owned by Deirdre, Raphael’s has undergone a huge transformation. Gone is the second-hand furniture and junk. Now beautiful gold angels wings grace the entrance and the space is wholly dedicated to the mystic and spiritual world. On the auspicious evening of Friday 13th December, Raphael’s will host their official opening. Deirdre and Robyn invite all our readers to come and meet them, share a drink and hors d’oeuvres and admire the laid back and comfortable feel that Raphael’s offers. They also have a selection of angels, books and crystals for sale. The shop is decorated with Robyn’s magnificent spiritual artworks. Raphael’s is a Wellness & Learning Centre, offering tarot, spiritual and coffee cup readings, numerology, astrology, mediumship, clairvoyance, hypnotherapy, sand play and art therapy. The centre will hold workshops with guest speakers. Robyn says, “Everyone has a journey that takes them to where they need to be”. Not only is Raphael’s a healing centre, it’s a place where you can just come and have a coffee and cake and enjoy the reading lounge. Well, nothing better than that really, as a recipe for healing. Celebrating the Life of Lisa Preuss Lisa Preuss of Emu Heights, captured the hearts of many people. Having lived and worked in the Penrith area since 1957, Lisa is fondly known as the friendly German lady from the Ponderosa Fruit Market . Lisa and her husband Karl worked every day, but Friday mornings she would take time off to go into Penrith and do the weekly errands. Through Lisa’s work and her involvement with Table Tennis and Indoor Bowls, many people knew Lisa and she was blessed with many friends. She is best known for her bright and happy nature . Karl and Lisa celebrated 60 years of marriage in May this year. They were honoured by local member Stuart Ayres, and received letters from the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the Queen. Sadly, we recently said Farewell to our beloved Lisa. The Preuss Family are very thankful for the love, comfort and support they have received. Their appreciation goes to Grace Funerals for their help and understanding, and a special thankyou to the Celebrant, Pamela Noal, for a beautiful and personal Service. Lisa will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Ladies of the Caring Hearts Quilters preparing the quilts for distribution

10 years ago, Emu Plains resident Margaret Collier got together with a few friends to establish a charity quilting group known as Caring Hearts Community Quilters. Today, the group consists of 16 women from the Emu Plains and Penrith district, with some members hailing from Windsor, Richmond, Springwood and Winmalee. The Quilters’ sole purpose is to make quilts for charity, and collectively the women have spent thousands of hours and thousands of metres of cotton sewing quilts for people in need right across the country and abroad. Their latest project has seen the ladies collating quilts from their own collection and those supplied by other quilting groups to donate to bushfire-affected students from various schools in the Blue Mountains. By the end of November, Caring Hearts Quilters had distributed over 80 beautiful quilts to 5 pre-schools, 5 primary schools as well as students from St Columbus and Winmalee High School.

When to Put Up the Tree Traditionally, Christmas trees were not brought in and decorated until Christmas Eve or, in the traditions celebrating Christmas Eve rather than on the first of day of Christmas, 23 December, and then removed the day after Twelfth Night (5 January); to have a tree up before or after these dates was even considered bad luck. In many areas, it has become customary to set up one’s Christmas tree at the beginning of the Advent season. In Australia, the Christmas tree is usually put up on 1st December, except for South Australia, where most people put up their tree after the Adelaide Christmas Pageant in late November. Some traditions suggest that Christmas trees may be kept up until no later than 2 February, the feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (Candlemas), when the Christmas season effectively closes.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com In the October issue of the Gazette, I gave you some strategies for resolving sibling conflict and rivalry. It was such a big topic that I had to split it into two parts. Here is Part 2 … • Role model for your kids what relationship repair looks like. If you have roused on the kids and you feel like you went too far, lost your cool, got it wrong, or responded from your own stuff rather than being logical and reasonable, you can apologise to your kids for your behaviour. You can talk about what you said or did that was mistaken and what you think you could have done better. This is good modelling. Just never make your kids responsible for YOUR feelings and behaviour (own them), never make your kids responsible for making you feel better, and never ever beg for their forgiveness. • Do the “kid swap” on a regular basis. When your kids have their friends over they are usually at their best behaviour. When you send your kids off to someone else’s house to play, they are usually on their best behaviour. I really like the kid swap, and will have up to 6 boys in my tiny little house on a regular basis. It is wonderful to see how well the children can get along. • As Dr Laura Markham says “love each one the best”. This is different to treating them all the same. As your children get older it becomes too hard to treat them all the same. One will have a birthday party invite and the others will not. That’s life – there is very little equity or sameness. However, be careful that you speak positively about each of your children and give each of them your love, care and attention. A work colleague of mine years ago told me that growing up she thought she was Mum’s “special one”. She was one of eight children. One day at lunch, sitting around the table with her adult siblings, they each said they thought they were the special one, the one that Mum loved the best. I can almost guarantee that Mum did not spend hours with each of her eight children each day. She demonstrated her love and care to each child in the quality of the small interactions throughout the day, each and every day. • Have house rules - not because the kids are going to follow them 100% of the time, but because rules communicate your expectations for their behaviour. State them in a positive way, so that the kids know what to do rather than what not to do. So, instead of saying “no hitting: say “we keep our hands and feet to ourselves”. Have a family meeting once per week, and allow the children to have their own say about what is working for them and what is not. • When children are fighting over the computer, TV, X-box, etc, the logical consequence is to switch it off for five minutes. When they come back to the activity at the end of the five minutes, remind them that if they fight over it again, it will go away for 10 minutes. Increase the time by five minutes each time. Make sure you apply the logical consequence immediately and consistently. Follow through with what you say you will do. Switching it off for short periods gives your kids the chance to get it right. When you’ve got to the stage where you have switched the machine off for a half hour, let the kids know that it has gone away for the day and they can try again tomorrow. • Kids fighting in the car? Pull over and have a five minute Quiet Time. It’s too dangerous to drive whilst the kids are carrying on in the back. • You can use reflective listening to sort out a stoush between siblings by reflecting what they are saying and how they are feeling. Don’t storm in and ask the two most stupid questions that parents ask – “Who started it?” and “What happened?” You’ll never get a straight answer, you will be forced to take sides, and you may get it wrong, setting the scene for further resentment and conflict . MONEY MATTER$ With Alex McKenzie – Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au

Insurance ... How much cover is enough? Under insurance is a huge problem in Australia, mainly because many of us tend to overlook the fact that a member of our family could become critically ill, injured or worse, pass away. Essentially, we ignore the risk and figure that it won’t happen to us. Therefore we don’t prepare for the associated financial risk. I don’t need to tell everyone that this is a naive view –serious illness and accidents happen to people everyday and although we all hope it doesn’t happen to us or our loved ones, none of us are immune. Secondly, many of us are not accurately aware of the financial risk if something unforeseen should happen. Most people are aware of and understand life insurance and many have cover, either held in super or directly, but more than half have insufficient cover to maintain the family lifestyle in the event of the insured’s death. To Calculate life insurance we normally look at the clients expenses, debts and income requirements to determine how much is needed for the family, then take into consideration the assets available and use insurance to cover the gap. The expense component, often referred to as clean-up, normally includes funeral costs, legal costs and other expenses that surround the death of an individual. Some also like to include additional funds to cover time off work and the like. This amount is usually relatively small and fairly consistent, ranging from around $5,000 to $25,000. Most clients require both partners’ incomes to service debts; therefore in general, clients will need to have sufficient cover to pay down most or all of their debts. If all debts are paid down the family will be able to keep all assets, most notably the family home, with no debts against them. This is important even in the event of a nonworking spouse. Income requirements are an often forgotten part of the insurance calculations. In many cases, even without debts, the surviving family will have insufficient income to meet expenses. When calculating income requirements it is normal to separate into income required for children and income for the surviving spouse. We then calculate a per annum figure for each, and determine the length of time the income is required. The reason we separate the two is that income for the children usually has a different time factor to that of the spouse. The income shortfall can be hard to determine, but a good financial planner will be able to guide you through this process. Often income requirements may change; a spouse may require more income initially whilst they are “getting back on their feet” or are taking care of the children and unable to work. As an example they may need $20,000 pa for the first 5 years and $10,000 pa for the following 10 years. Once we have determined the income needs and time periods for children and spouse, we calculate the lump sum required to provide that income. Once the three amounts are combined and we have identified the needs, we then subtract the family’s available assets to provide for the above expenses. These include Superannuation, investments and cash, to identify the cover required. A working example to demonstrate the process. John & Mary are 35, they have 2 kids, aged 7 & 5. John is employed full time, Mary no longer works. John has $100,000 in super and $20,000 in savings. They have $415,000 in debts. Estimated income required for the children is $10,000 p.a. Mary will require $20,000 pa for the first 10 years, then $10,000 pa until she reaches age 65. John’s life insurance ... Debts $415,000 Expenses $10,000 Income Spouse $277,978 Children $230,976 Coverage needs $933,733 Less Assets $120,000 Insurance Needs $813,733

The Lions Club of Australia with the support and sponsorship of the National Australia Bank, has hosted the Youth of the Year Quest for over 20 years, giving contestants the opportunity to be selected as the outstanding youth, to be an ambassador for his/her country and travel overseas under the auspices of Lions International. The Lions Youth of the Year Quest is designed to foster, encourage and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities of our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education. The judging is held over two days; with a preliminary interview where the student may wear casual attire followed on the next evening by a public speaking dinner where the student must wear full school uniform. The student is required to prepare a five minute speech for the dinner as the public speaking section of the quest, as well as provide two minute answers to two impromptu questions. The Lions Club of Emu Plains supported Jessica Alderson of Nepean Creative & Performing Arts High School at the local Quest held at Penrith Bowling Club. The overall winner was Cristin Warda from Caroline Chisholm College. Those students or teachers interested in competing in next years‘ Quest should contact the Lions Club of Emu Plains Quest coordinator; Jim Devine on 0427110061.

SECURING YOUR WORLD With Brett McVea – National Locksmiths

Ph: 1300 897 170 E: info@nationallocksmiths.com.au Christmas is fast approaching and this is normally one of our busiest times of the year. We do seem to get a lot of jobs to attend break-ins, as the Christmas trees normally have some nice gifts under them that attracts the would-be thieves. Otherwise it’s because people tend to go away and leave their house unattended. Some simple security tips to remember for the festive season: • Make sure you have Double cylinder Deadlocks on all perimeter doors • Make sure you have key operated window locks installed • Lock your screen doors with the key and not just the locking snib • Sensor lights are always handy to have installed • If you have a house alarm, check to make sure the backup battery is not flat • Make sure your safe is fire rated and bolted into the floor. From everybody at National Locksmiths, please have a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Santa Photos with Your Pets

Fantastic Open Day with Dr Harry! Thank you to everyone who attended the Open Day on Sunday 17th November. The weather was terrible and it rained all day, however we still had many people visit and stand in the queue to meet Dr Harry Cooper. From the comments we are hearing, Dr Harry was worth the wait and the rain!! Our guests had an opportunity to line up to meet Dr Harry Cooper where he gave advice on dogs, cats and other animals whilst having his photo taken and signing autographs. The hospital tours were very popular, and not just because it gave the guests a chance to get dry and stay out of the rain. Eden and Kristie showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. A hospital tour is a great way for you to see what goes on behind our doors. Dr Harry Cooper judged the dog competitions and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Walking With A PawPose, Woof N Whiskers Pet Minding, Fluffy and Knuckles, Dog Tech, Pets Charming, Boehringer, Hills, Bayer, Zoetis, Dermcare and The Rosehip Specialists. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. We also hosted an online cat competition, as we all know that cats are more comfortable in their own home. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. A special thank you to Denise and Lorraine for handmaking and donating 2 quilts, which were raffled on the day. The raffle proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. The sausage sizzle was a great success, as they filled our bellies on a rainy day! All proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. We also had the world’s biggest model dog, Gulliver, attend our Open Day. Gulliver is a Guide Dog replica, who weighs 690kg, is 4.3 metres tall on his trailer, which is 2.3m wide, and 5m long. Travis, thanks for bringing Gulliver!! A special thank you to all of our staff and volunteers who helped out on the day. We could not have done it without you all! Thank you for working in the carpark, the jumping castles, and the BBQ. Thank you’s go out to: Pete, Chrissy, Bill, Hayley, Brian, Mark, Melissa, Nick, Andrew, Chris, Darren, Alex, Bob and Camille’s family. Thank goodness for family and friends!! Thank you to all of the tent holders who braved the wet weather and put on a smiling face: The Penrith Anglican College , Woof N Whiskers Pet Minding, David Darcy, Dog Tech, Fluffy and Knuckles, Pets Charming, Walking With a Pawpose, and Orchard Hills Rural Fire Brigade. If you have any suggestions for future events or what we can do to make an Open Day more enjoyable, please let us know. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Bringing Home the Gold Nepean Wolves Taekwondo & Haidong Gumdo Club recently sent a 19-strong team to Brisbane to compete in the 2013 Haidong Gumdo Australia Nationals. The club met with great success, returning home with a total of 55 medals between them. Haidong Gumdo is a dynamic and exciting Korean Sword art based on battle field techniques which can be traced back through 2,000 years of Korean history. Haidong Gumdo came to Australia 11 yrs ago and has rapidly grown in popularity, spreading

to 4 states with a very high standard amongst the students practicing the art. The Nepean Wolves team exhibited great enthusiasm and spirit at the Nationals. Every year, for the past 5 years, the Wolves club wins the trophy for the “Best Spirited” and “Best Performing” Club, and this year was no exception. The events at the Nationals included; • Patterns, like kata, a series of moves increasing in complexity as the student moves up through the grades. • Contact sparring. This is done with foam swords and the students wear a lot of padding to avoid any injuries. This is a great way to encourage students to remember to block the incoming attack before launching an attack of their own! • Paper cutting. This sounds easy, but cutting a hanging piece of paper with a wooden sword takes the correct technique. The lines to be cut on the paper are marked, and points are given for accuracy and the straightness of the cut. • Bamboo cutting is done by the black belt grades. It means performing a series of diagonal cuts through the bamboo, with a very sharp sword, in a downward and upward direction. A spectacular event to watch! The Nepean Wolves Club has been running Taekwondo classes in the Nepean area for 12 years, and began Haidong Gumdo classes nearly 5 years ago. If you’re interested in knowing more about the Wolves, call Luke Adlam – 0408 609 464.

penrithcity.nsw.gov.au Check Your Barbeques This Summer Season

POSITION VACANT

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP is reminding local residents and community groups to check their gas and electrical barbeques and to be proactive when it comes to maintenance in preparation for a hot summer. “Over the coming weeks in the lead up the Christmas, many people across the region will be hosting their Christmas party barbeques with friends and colleagues,” Mr Ayres said. “If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to check that your barbeque is ready for the summer season. “All gas appliances including barbeques and portable camping equipment must be certified to be legally sold in New South Wales. All electric barbecues must be approved and marked. “Owners of gas barbeques and portable appliances, including small cookers and camping lanterns, should check to make sure they are in good order and have the relevant approval marks before connecting to gas. Always check for leaks before lighting, and when lit, be aware of any unusual flame appearance or smells. Conduct any checks in a clear, safe location. “Make barbeque gas and electrical safety a priority this summer,” Mr Ayres said. You can find more information about gas and electrical product safety and check examples of gas and electrical approval marks on the Fair Trading website at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or call 13 32 20.
