William Cox Historical Festival at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum On July 20th, the William Cox Festival will celebrate one of the most important achievements in our early colonial history – the building of a road across the Blue Mountains - and July 2014 marks the bicentenary of the building of that road. The road was built by William Cox. Construction started in July 1814 at Emu Plains and finished at Bathurst in March 1815. With a working party of 32 convicts, four free persons and a handful of guards, Cox completed the 101 mile (163km) road over the mountains in seven months! The road opened up inland New South Wales to European settlement. Cox’s bullock cart was the first wheeled vehicle to pass over the Blue Mountains and down over Mt. York. To mark the bicentenary, the Nepean District Historical Society with the support of Penrith City Council will re-enact the start of Cox’s journey from Regatta Park, Emu Pains at 10.30 am to the Arms of Australia Inn Museum for the William Cox Festival and formalities. ...continued pg. 11

FROM THE EDITOR

Hello July! We have officially crept past the middle of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this, is the end of Term 2 for our school friends and the start of a new financial year for our friends in business. Another month passes and I wish I could hit the ‘pause’ button for just a moment. Last month I learned of a dear friend who is facing a health-scare and a long battle ahead. Many of us have friends, family, coworkers and acquaintances facing similar battles. When we face situations like this it brings with it mixed emotions and a shadow of sadness, memories of the past and thoughts of the future. A desire to stop and appreciate all those good times and cherish every single moment that life has to offer. This month we have many stories of hope, delight, inspiration, success and courage for you to revel in. So many wonderful people, moments and events occurring in and around our local community. I know I have said it before, but it rings so very true! There are magical moments in ever day, we just have to take the time to see them. Enjoy your community news.

Local Holds Push-A-Thon To Help The Homeless Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith met with Nathan Pentecost, Ambassador for Mama Lana’s Community Foundation to offer his support during Nathan’s inspirational 100km wheelchair push around the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith, last month. “I commend Nathan for his dedication and determination to complete this journey and raise funds for such a well deserving organisation,” Stuart Ayres said. Founded by locals, Lana & Roger Borg, Mama Lana’s provide hot homemade meals to those who are homeless or disadvantaged in Penrith four nights a week. Mama Lana’s is wholly not-for-profit and relies totally on donations from the public to keep running. “I wish Nathan all the best for the remainder of his push-a-thon and I applaud Mama Lana’s for the amazing work they do in the local community” said Stuart Ayres. Happy Birthday! Recently good friends experienced the birth of their first baby. It was a time of celebration and joy. Why is the birth of a child so significant? And why do we continue to celebrate people’s birthdays as they grow older. It’s because birth is a time of wonder - a new little person who didn’t exist nine months ago, has been born into the world. We can know them, and they can know us. We can watch them grow up into adulthood. We can share experiences, and joys and even sadness. But the Bible tells us one more thing, a crucial thing, that makes even more sense of why we celebrate. Here is another person made in the image of our great God. Here is another person made to share eternal life. To know God, and be known by God. That’s priceless. Have you ever thought of yourself in that way? It’s got to be good for your self esteem! And when Jesus came into the world he came because he valued us so much. That while we’d abandoned God, he wasn’t willing to abandon us. So Jesus said, ‘Be born again’. It’s an invitation to a fresh start. An invitation to be re-made in His image, and to have life forever with God. So as we celebrate the birth of each new child, we’re pointed to the new birth that God offers each of us. Rev Roger Cunningham

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

If you have been reading this column for a while, you will have gathered by now that I love Descriptive Praise as a parenting strategy. That is, not saying “good boy/girl” or “good job/work” when your child has done something well, but to actually describe what you like about what he or she did and why. And if you have been using descriptive praise you know how effective it can be. BUT… If you are also using the words “naughty” and “bad” when describing your child’s mistaken behaviour, you may find that the descriptive praise doesn’t work so well. Why? Because words are powerful. If you use “naughty” and “bad” your child will internalise those words, and he or she will prove just how naughty and bad he or she can be! I have consulted with some parents over the past few months who have come to me asking why their kids are spiralling into increasingly negative behaviour to the point where they are uncontrollable, even though the parents have been using descriptive praise. In each of these cases the parents have been using “naughty” and “bad” a lot. I have said this so many times talking to parents over the past few months it bears repeating here… REMOVE “NAUGHTY” AND “BAD” FROM YOUR VOCABULARY WHEN DESCRIBING YOUR CHILD”S BEHAVIOUR!!!! And get rid of that damned “naughty” chair or corner. Call it a “chill out” or “calm down” or “quiet time” place. When you use these very powerful and nasty words on your child and you use them often, you are digging a pit of shame for him so deep that it may take a lifetime for him to crawl out of it. Shame during childhood can lead to mental health problems during adolescence and adulthood. Think about it – if someone close to you calls you ugly or stupid often enough you start to believe it. In fact, if you are sharing your home with an adult who says these things to you it is domestic violence (emotional abuse). So, when is it ever OK to use these words with the little people whom we are supposed to be guiding, educating, caring for, nurturing, growing up, loving? Never. The next question from parents is “what do I say instead?” Tell a child ‘what to do’ rather than ‘what not to do’. Always keep it positive. For example, “stand still while I fix your collar” and then follow-up with descriptive praise “thank you for staying still, it was so helpful, and it gets it done quickly”. Paying attention to the positive encourages more positive behaviour from your child. And if your child has had some kind of mistaken behaviour, instead of focussing on who she is (for example, clumsy, careless), focus on what she did (for example, broke the window) and with her assistance work out what she can do next time (for example, kick the ball towards the fence). To find out more about positive parenting I highly recommend that you do Triple P (Positive Parenting Program). It’s fabulous!

SPORT

Ice Hero Helps Win Gold For Australia Bush 2 Bledisloe McCarthy Catholic College Year 12 student, Luke Zvonicek returned triumphant to Australia from Sofia, Bulgaria, after helping steer Australian U18 – IIIA to GOLD in the World Ice Hockey Championships. Luke is a right wing/forward and loves the ‘fast and physical challenge of the sport’. However, Luke thinks two of the key skills needed are to know ‘how to avoid being hit’ and ‘knowing how to take a hit!’. Anyone who has watched professional ice hockey will have witnessed the colossal collisions which occur in the sport. While players may look chunky with body armour, Luke advises that there is little in the protective gear that actually saves a player from bruises and pain! Australia played against New Zealand, Israel, Mexico, Taipei and Bulgaria. In the round-robin competition Australia only lost once, to Bulgaria 1-0 and defeated the other nations. Australia charged through New Zealand in their last game and won 6-0. Luke won ‘Most Valuable Player’ in this stunning victory. Luke played hard in every international match and ‘loved every minute’! Luke’s coach is highly respected Australian player Rhett Kelly. Luke plays for successful local ice hockey team the FLYERS. However, Craig Beacroft the McCarthy Catholic College Sport Organiser, advises there are no plans to introduce ice hockey as a school sport. ‘I think there is enough potential for bruises from existing sports. Luke is obviously a tough competitor and the college is proud of him’.

Penrith will play host to the last leg of the Qantas Wallabies “Bush2Bledisloe initiative when the team visits the city on Friday, 8 August ahead of their test match against New Zealand. The new ‘Bush2Bledisloe’ team initiative was created by Qantas Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie and will bring passionate supporters closer to the national team than ever before with a range of community activities planned during each stage of the tour. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said he was looking forward to welcoming the Wallabies to Penrith as they attempt to win back the coveted Bledisloe Cup. “Penrith has a rich sporting culture and I’m sure the community will get right behind the Wallabies as they prepare to play the All Blacks, Cr Fowler said. “The Bush2Bledisloe is the first of its kind and one that our city is pleased to offer its support to one of our national teams. Fans will get a unique opportunity to meet their Qantas Wallabies heroes during daily open training and fan activity sessions and will also get the chance to see and hold-up the prestigious Bledisloe Cup. The tour kicks off in Dubbo before travelling to Orange and Bathurst, with Penrith being the last destination prior to playing New Zealand in Sydney on 16 August. The concept aims to engage the Wallabies’ players with the community while at the same time bringing the community closer to the team. A full schedule of Bush2Bledisloe open training sessions and community engagement activities will be released in the lead-up to the opening Bledisloe Cup.

Proactive Inspections Could Save Lives Penrith Council’s Swimming Pools Barrier Inspection Program has one aim – to stop drownings. The program developed and adopted by Council in 2013 as a response to changes to state legislation, was designed to enhance the safety of children under five around backyard swimming pools. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Council officers had begun contacting pool and spa owners to organise inspections. “The Inspection Program will of course take time to roll out across the City, Cr Fowler said. “But we are encouraging pool and spa owners to contact us to organise inspections at their homes as soon as possible. “We need to ensure pools and spas have safety barriers that meet the Australian standards. By being proactive, we can stop drownings and the devastating injuries that can occur to children who nearly drown. The Barrier Inspection Program applies to all pools and spas, including those that are portable and inflatable. Fees apply for inspections. It is $150 for the first inspection and $100 if a second inspection is required. “These fees cover our costs to implement the Swimming Pools Barrier Inspection Program, Cr Fowler said. “This is not a money-making exercise for Council, but a program aimed at saving lives. If your pool fence complies, a certificate of compliance can be issued which is valid for three years. You can also carry out a self assessment of your swimming pool barrier fence to assist with compliance, before a Council inspection. Checklists can be found at swimmingpoolregister. nsw.gov.au/checklists. Pools must be also be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool register. This includes pools in private residences, as well as pools at tourist accommodation and multi-occupancy dwellings. Registration is free. Go to swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au. For more information contact Penrith Council’s Swimming Pool Administration Officer Nicole Meyers on 4732 7897, or go to penrithcity.nsw.gov.au// Backyard-Pool-Safety/.

Pamper Your Skin Did you know the skin is the largest organ of the body, yet it is the one which we generally give the least thought to when it comes to our health. Not only does the skin hold us together, it also regulates body temperature, acts as a blood reservoir, protects against some forms of bacteria and viruses, allows us to experience various sensations eg warmth, coolness, touch, pressure, vibration & pain, aids in excretion and absorption of various substances, aids in the synthesis of Vitamin D and allows transdermal drug administration. All good reasons to look after your skin. The best way to do this is Remain hydrated by drinking healthy water – make wise choices – even showering in chemical laden water can have an effect on your skin and your health. Limit sun exposure – particularly in summer to prevent skin cancers etc. Time spent in the early morning and late afternoon is preferable to the middle of the day. Wear protective clothing – to protect from sun and wind. Moisturise regularly – summer or winter your skin can dry out. You need to replenish the moisture with effective moisturisers. Choose these wisely. Read the label and check the ingredients which are listed in order of concentration. Some may be classed as potentially harmful and can be absorbed transdermally. They may also irritate existing skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Pamper your skin – look after your health. The choice is yours!

MONEY MATTERS With Alex McKenzie - Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au

Nothing Succeeds like Succession qualified and willing to accept the role. But that is not always the case. On the positive side, it ensures the founder’s vision Planning Small business is generally regarded as the backbone of the Australian economy, but that strong back is showing signs of age. With 30 per cent of all small business owners aged on the wrong side of 55,i it is important to have a succession plan in place. Ideally, succession planning should begin when the business is formed to ensure a smooth transition if and when the need arises. But all too often founders put succession planning in the too-hard basket, leaving themselves open to financial and emotional stress when the decision is thrust upon them. There are a number of reasons why this is the case. Fear of death, reluctance to hand over control, difficulty choosing among children or a refusal to acknowledge the need for planning. Handing over power to a new generation is a tricky process in any corporate environment. Rupert Murdoch, at age 83, has only just anointed elder son Lachlan as his heir apparent after years of playing his children off against one another. A Cautionary Tale Large organisations devote significant resources to finding and grooming chief executives and board members, and small businesses can learn from their example. But sometimes even the most successful companies get it wrong. Computer software giant Microsoft recently drew criticism for its handling of the appointment of a chief executive officer to replace Steve Ballmer.ii After 14 years at the helm Ballmer announced last August that he was stepping down. The company did not announce a successor immediately, instead signalling it would happen within a year. To make matters worse, at around the same time Microsoft founder Bill Gates announced he would step aside as chairman to make way for an independent non-executive chairman. This created a leadership vacuum and wild speculation in the press about likely external candidates. The company also gave conflicting signals about its future direction. It took five months to appoint Satya Nadella as CEO. Given that he had been with the company for 21 years observers wondered why the succession had not been organised earlier. Canvass Your Options Many small business owners hope to keep it in the family by handing the baton to the next generation. That is an option but it is not necessarily the best one. Appoint a Family Member Handing control to an adult child or another family member does have many advantages provided the chosen individual is

for the business has a good chance of outliving them, they can maintain some influence over the company after they retire and have the satisfaction of knowing that their life’s work has been of benefit for future generations. Appoint a Manager If there are no suitable candidates within the family, an outsider can be appointed. This might be an individual already employed in the business or an external manager. Sometimes a temporary professional manager is appointed to bridge the gap and perhaps mentor a family member until the are ready for the role. The most important issue for family businesses turning to an outsider is trust. The family must be confident that the company, and their interests, will be in safe hands? Sell as a Going Concern Sometimes the best option for an owner is to sell the business and move on to new challenges or retirement. Options include a trade sale, stock market flotation or a management buy-out. With a stock market float the founder can retain equity and cash in some of the value they have built in the company while raising capital to fund future growth. A management buy-out is a compromise solution to ensure continuity of the business without having to sell on the open market. Liquidate The least palatable option is to sell off the company’s assets, settle all outstanding debts and close the business. This is generally seen as the last resort because it can be costly and is unlikely to raise as much money as the sale of the business as a going concern. There may also be an emotional cost in having to let loyal employees go. Do Nothing Burying your head in the sand is the default option and unfortunately it is all too common. By the time the founder is no longer able to run the business, or the business has struggled for many years, a fire sale may be the only option left. And unfortunately, that is the least profitable outcome. Succession planning begins with owners and managers incorporating succession planning into their business plan from the outset. Your adviser can help you initiate discussions about succession planning for your business and ensure you are prepared for the future. i ABS, Small Business: An economic overview, May 2012. http://www.abs.gov.au/ websitedbs/d3310114.nsf/4a256353001af3ed4b2562bb00121564/d291d673c4c5a ab4ca257a330014dda2/$FILE/RBA%2Small%20Business%20An%20economic%20 Overview%202012. ii ‘Microsoft appoints Satya Nadella and demonstrates how not to appoint a CEO’ by Andrew Cave, Forbes, Feb 4, 2014.

Online Forum Launched Penrith Progression launched an online forum last month, open to anyone who wants to participate in the city’s future. Project Director Craig Butler said the forum was at Penrith Council’s Our Future site, which had been used for consultation on other subjects in previous years. “The Penrith Progression online forum is an opportunity for residents and business people to get involved in Penrith’s future,” Mr Butler said. “Through Penrith Progression we will work together to revitalise the city centre and create local jobs. “I know that there are many people who want to be part of this important process, but cannot make our gatherings and forums due to work and other commitments. “This is another way you can have your say in the future of your city.” Discussion points on the site now include: What city living should look like, and How to attract people to our city centre. It is easy to join our online forum, just go to http://ourfuture.com.au/ penrith-progression to sign up and get involved. Go to our website: www.penrithprogression.com.au to find out more.
