Aussie Jack Launches Bicentenary Crossing Next year marks the bicentenary of the crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813 and Penrith is gearing up to celebrate this historic milestone with veteran Australian actor, Jack Thompson. A program of community events, including a re-enactment trek, a family camp out and a historical festival will be held in May 2013 - exactly 200 years after the first crossing took place. Actor Jack Thompson is the face of these celebrations, which are being supported by community minded local business, JK Williams. An obvious choice to be the face of the event, Jack is well known for his love of the Australian bush and Australian history and is keen to bring attention and recognition to these early explorers. “I’m delighted to be participating in the Bicentenary of the First Crossing of the Blue Mountains celebrations.” Continued pg 4..

From the Editor Winter is here, and I awoke to the first frost of the season the other morning. Nothing like a good frost to let you know you’re alive! Time to pull out all the winter woolies, and to settle down on the lounge with a warm cup of tea and your latest edition of your community newspaper. We have some great brainteasers and puzzles on page 10 to warm up the brain cells. It’s also a great time to have the oven going to warm up the kitchen. If you’re after some inspiration, I’ve included my secret slice recipe on page 8, for your eating pleasure. “What’s Cooking?” will be a regular segment and I’d greatly appreciate any contributions of special recipes (cooking isn’t one of my strong points, so I need all the help I can get!) And can you believe it, there’s only a few more weeks until the next school holidays. How did this term go so fast? Kids, start planning your holidays, and get ready to send me more photos, picture or poems. Our readers loved your last contributions! Enjoy reading your local community news and have a great start to the winter. Vicki

Our Lady Leads the Way with Science Our Lady Of The Way Primary School is innovative in their approach to science, always looking for new and exciting ways to introduce scientific concepts to the students. CSIRO Science Education Centre visited the school in May for a fantastic day of fun science. The CSIRO team presented two interactive hands-on science programs. Year 6 were captivated by a “Forensic Frenzy”, while the year 5 students engaged in a fascinating unit called “The Human Body”. Judging by the childrens’ responses, the program was a great success. Here’s what some of the year 5 students had to say about their awesome science day. “CSIRO is the best because I never knew that I had a blind spot!” said Paris. Logan said, “CSIRO was a gigantic step forward in our research for our human body unit!” “We learnt about all our different blood cells and what blood looks like close up!” said Annie. Max thought, “CSIRO is great because it can teach you so many things.” “We learnt how a tablet dissolves in your tummy!” Emily B said. The CSIRO program engages students in eye-opening interactive science theatre

and hands-on experiments, which have been developed around real-life CSIRO research. Our Lady of the Way students were given a great opportunity to ‘be’ the scientists, rather than just reading about them. CSIRO, more than being the largest employer of scientists in Australia, is one of the most respected science organisations

in the world. The CSIRO Science Education Centre is able to draw on the benefits of this, and provide quality science programs for students, teachers and public audiences throughout NSW. The CSIRO presenters have experience in teaching and performing. Their amusing and lively approach to science is both engaging and educational.

Nightmare on Hare/Mann/ Wascoe Street! Glenbrook’s awkward Hare/Mann/ Wascoe Street intersection is set to change following a review of traffic flows into the eastern side of Glenbrook after a right-turn restriction was imposed at the intersection of Ross Street and the Great Western Highway last year, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said today. “The Hare/Mann/Wascoe Street intersection is one of the most awkwardly designed traffic configurations in the Penrith electorate. Retiring after 40 years in the Public Sector On 24th February the Commissioner of Taxation, Michael D’Ascenzo visited the Penrith Tax Office to join with staff and notable guests to bid farewell to Bruce Turner, Chief Internal Auditor of the Tax Office and the senior executive leader of the Penrith office. The Commissioner paid tribute to Bruce’s outstanding contribution to the ATO. Bruce is a proud Emu Plains local who commenced his long and distinguished career serving the community in the mailroom of the Rural Bank Penrith. Through Bruce’s strong work ethic, personal drive and integrity he has spent the vast majority of his career in senior roles in the State Bank of NSW, Reserve Bank of Australia, State Rail and Integral Energy and eventually returning to Penrith to take up the role of Chief Internal Auditor for the ATO in 2007. Throughout his career Bruce has attained global, national, and local recognition for his contributions to promoting good governance. Whilst Bruce is highly recognised and remembered within the ATO for his contributions to the organisation over the past 5 years it is important to acknowledge that Bruce is especially passionate about contributing to the broader community. Bruce chairs the Audit & Risk Committees for the NSW Department of Premier & Cabinet, and the Nepean Blue Mountains and Western Sydney Local Health Districts, and he sits as an independent member on the NSW Transport Construction Authority, NSW Country Rail Infrastructure Authority and Wyong Shire Council audit/risk/governance committees. Bruce was recently appointed to the international committee for the auditing profession, the Institute of Internal Auditors, where he will represent Australia’s public sector interests. Throughout his career Bruce has also found time to author technical publications, including chapters for two better practice books in 2009-2010 published in Asia and the UK, Chair of the Public Sector Audit Network Group in the ACT (a group of

As an avid Penrith Panthers supporter, it was only fitting that ‘Paws’ the Panthers mascot attended Bruce’s farewell. Bruce was presented with a signed, framed Panthers jersey as a farewell gift from the ATO staff. Bruce and his wife Bea are enjoying the opportunity to travel, and recently returned from a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands. They are also making the most of their opportunity to spend more time with their family, Nicole, Robert, Jacqueline, Glen and Sally, and their three grandchildren Elina, Elijah and Lucy. Bruce is a true ambassador for the Penrith community. His passion and commitment for his community will be remembered for a long time. We wish Bruce well in his retirement and this extra time will enable Bruce to continue with his Community endeavours.

Modern Classic at the Joan

Penrith based theatre company Emu Heights Productions is proud to present “The Shoe-Horn Sonata” again at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, after its successful inaugural 2011 season. ‘The Shoe-Horn Sonata’ is a powerful award-winning play by John Misto based on true events of two women who survived a Japanese POW camp in the jungles of Sumatra. Reunited after fifty years for a TV documentary, the women relive the horrors, fragile triumphs, humour and courage required to survive. They also uncover a devastating secret that separated them for half a century. “Plays were meant to be seen, not read.” says Ian Zammit, co-founder of Emu Heights Productions. This is the vision driving Emu Heights Productions to bring professional quality theatre to Western Sydney for the benefit of HSC English students, and the company is delighted with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from teachers and students for last year’s production.

The Shoe-Horn Sonata is being performed in the Q Theatre at Penrith’s Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre for a limited season – 5th to 9th June. Tickets can be booked by calling the Box office on 4723 7600, going online to www.jspac.com.au or in person at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre Box Office. Teachers and educators receive 1 free ticket per 10 student tickets booked. Contact the Box Office. Running time: 2 hrs 40 mins including interval and post-show question and answer session. Matinees: Evening: 11am Tue 5th June 8pm Fri 8th June 11am Wed 6th June 8pm Sat 9th June 11am Thu 7th June 11am Fri 8th June

Emu Heights Productions Inc. is a notfor-profit theatre company, established in 2010 by Ian Zammit and a group of artists, teachers and local business people to promote access for students in the

Western Sydney region to professional & entertaining theatrical productions in their own backyard. The wider community are welcome to join in the audience experience and see these classic plays for themselves. The vision of Emu Heights Productions is for all audiences to learn about, be a part of and share experience and enjoyment of live theatre. Get involved! The members of Emu Heights Productions come from diverse backgrounds within our local community, and work to help spread the word about the company and upcoming productions. Members support the company’s direction, develop fund raising, and help behind the scenes for the productions. “Playtexts in Performance” Forum Emu Heights Productions will be hosting a forum for English and Drama educators this August in Penrith. It will provide an opportunity to discuss understanding of playtexts through performance for the Western Sydney region. This is a great opportunity for educators from Sydney and regional schools to connect with our community and engage in this valuable discussion. For more information about this talented local production company, visit www.emuheightsproductions.com.au

Funding for Arms of Australia Inn Museum The Arms of Australia Inn Museum will benefit from extensions to the roofing over paved areas after the Nepean District Historical Society put in a successful application to the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said today. Mr Ayres met with Rosemary Weaver and members of the society to announce the $12,989 grant toward the museum. “The Nepean District Historical Society do a fantastic job with the operation of the Arms of Australia Inn Museum and getting the message out about our region and the significant role Penrith has played in the development of our state,” Mr Ayres said. “I will continue to work with members of the Nepean District Historical Society and other local organisations to find ways to build their capacity to support our community.”

WHAT’S COOKING?

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

Winter is here, so there’s no better time to cosy up in the kitchen with all your favourite ingredients, whipping up some tasty treats. I must admit that I’m not much of a cook, but I do have one specialty – here’s the recipe. It meets all criteria for a successful treat – it’s super easy, and it is delicious! I’ve never yet met anyone who hasn’t enjoyed it!

Vicki’s Yummy Slice (my now not-so-secret recipe) Ingredients 1 cup organic natural sultanas 1 cup dried cranberries (eg. Craisins) 1 cup Cadbury’s Dark Chocolate Baking Chips 1 generous cup flaked almonds and/or crushed cashews 1 cup desiccated coconut 1 400g tin Skim Condensed Milk N.B. You could experiment with substituting different nuts or dried fruits, to your preferred taste. Method • Preheat oven to 200ºC. • Line a rectangular slice tray with baking paper. • Layer the ingredients evenly in the tray, staring with sultanas, cranberries, chocolate chips, nuts, then coconut. • Drizzle the condensed milk evenly over the layered ingredients so that it covers the entire surface. • Cover the tray with foil and bake in the oven for 20 mins. • After 20 mins, remove foil, reduce oven temperature to 160ºC and bake for a further 20 mins or until golden brown. • Allow to cool, then refrigerate before cutting into squares. Yummy Slice is best served cold, and stored in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

THIS SPORTING LIFE Fitness Builds Achievement Children at Emu Heights Public School take their fitness seriously! The school believes fitness and healthy living have a positive impact on academic achievement and ensure the 3Rs are balanced with a strong program of physical activity. The school compliments its weekly fitness and sport programs with special events including Penrith Cup Gala Days organised by teachers at the school to provide inter-school competitive sport opportunities across a range of different sports. Children are also encouraged to set personal fitness goals and map their physical activity as part of the Premier’s Sporting Challenge. One indicator the children are growing in fitness was the school’s recent first place at the District Cross Country Carnival. Emu Heights is a great place for children to learn and grow!

GO TEAM SKATEL! The 2012 Skate Australia Artistic Roller Skating National Championships to be hosted by SkateNSW, will be held at the Whitlam Leisure Centre, Memorial Avenue, Liverpool NSW, from 1st – 7th July. Team Skatel Artistic Roller Skating Open Precision Team is thrilled to represent New South Wales at the Championships. The team consists of 12 members aged from 10 years old and up, ranging in ability. The skaters train together once a week at the Emu Plains Roller Skating rink, but many of the skaters train at least 4 times a week individually. It is believed that our team will be the youngest team competing in the precision event and for many of the skaters this will be the first time that they will compete at this elite level. To be able to compete as a representative of NSW is a great opportunity for all our skaters. However, to get our team to Nationals we need to raise approximately $600 per skater. This includes team costumes, training leotards, NSW representative track suits, nomination fees and coaching fees. To help the team, Penrith Skatel are holding a Skate-a-thon on Sunday, 24th June, 2012 at the roller skating rink to help raise some money. So why not grab your friends and head on down to the skate-a-thon for some fun and fitness. You could even be a lucky winner. The team will be running a raffle and a silent auction on the day. For more information about the National Championships, check out www.skatensw.org.au. Go Team Skatel!!

Its name is a derivation of the adjective “sartorial,” a reference to what was the traditional cross-legged position of tailors (or “sartors”) at work. • The largest muscle is the gluteus maximus (buttock muscle), which moves the thighbone away from the body and straightens out the hip joint. It is also one of the stronger muscles in the body. • The smallest muscle is the stapedius in the middle ear. It is thinner thana thread and 0.127 cm in length. It activates the stirrup that sends vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. www.emuleonaygazette.com.au

BrainTracker

Brain Strainer! Six men, whose names are Fred Alberts, Larry Smith, Brian Martin, Marty Jones, Bill Edison, and John Fox were in an elevator together. Suddenly, the lights went out. When the lights came back on, Fred Alberts was found stabbed. Other detectives have investigated. They have questioned the suspects, the witnesses, and people who know the suspects. They have collected physical evidence (hair samples, fibre samples, etc.) from the crime scene. They have collected 14 clues, but have not been able to solve the crime. Therefore, they have called in the world’s greatest detective, YOU. You must now examine the clues and solve the murder. No two suspects have the same weight, colour shoes, colour umbrella, colour car, or hair colour. The suspect who owns a purple car was wearing tan shoes. The suspect who weighs 180 pounds owns a green car. Brian Martin owns a green car. The suspect who owns a black car was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who weighs 150 pounds was wearing tan shoes. Marty Jones was carrying a purple umbrella. John Fox has red hair. Larry Smith weighs 210 pounds. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who was carrying a red umbrella is not the one who was wearing black shoes. The murderer owns a black car. The suspect who owns a white car is not the one who weighs 170 pounds. Bill Edison was wearing brown shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds is not the one who has red hair. May Solutions ... P D F I E R L E L E N S S T S H I O N F U D G L T I M P A A B S T O L E E
