Olympics the Goal for Phenomenal Athlete

McCarthy Catholic College Year 8 student Madison Higgins-Ashby is a 13 year old phenomenal athlete. Recently selected in the U20s Rugby 7s Pacific Barbarians team to play in Hawaii, Madi is incredibly fast, skilled and TOUGH! Sy Lagaaia her Rugby 7s coach states that Madi at 13 is as talented as Tiana Penitani was at 16 and who first represented at senior women’s level at 17! Sy states: ‘Madi’s fitness and skill are excellent but what especially marks her out is her strong mental toughness and discipline’. ‘Madi is an all round great kid!’ Madi is wildly enthusiastic about the opportunity to represent Australia in Rugby 7s at the Rio Olympics in 2016 but she will be six months short of the permissible age. The ARU is being lobbied to allow a rule change. Madi is also a stunning Touch Football player and her Scorpions U14 team recently won the NSW Championships. She has her heart on representing Australia in a future Touch Football World Cup. Aroha Paki, Madi’s Touch Football coach states ‘Madi never gives up! She is very determined! Madi is one of a kind! At Oz Tag or Brazilian Jiujitsu, Madi is equally talented. Madi says ‘I love sport! It’s fun to play – the faster the better! And my jiujitsu training helps me in Rugby! However, Madi was quite serious when she added ‘I like meeting people’. Madi especially enjoys contact sport and ‘I like combining speed and ball work’. Not just fast, Madi is also a thinker. ‘Losing is so frustrating but I then really enjoy solving how to set up movements which lead to tries and beating the opposition’. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season. There is a real theme of ‘Flying High’ in this edition, as we read about the inspirational and amazingly dedicated successes of so many within our community. $2 Million Project from M4 at Leonay Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomes the news that the work to reduce congestion and improve safety for motorists exiting the M4 motorway via the off ramps at Russell Street at Leonay is progressing well with the project on track to be completed by July. Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government has provided $2 million to the work as part of the $246 million pinch point program which improves existing bottlenecks on the road network to reduce delays for road users. “The off ramp at Russell Street has been identified as a critical pinch point for motorists with westbound vehicles using the off ramp to exit the M4 queue backing onto the motorway, blocking through lanes and increasing the risk of high speed crashes,� Stuart Ayres said. “Work has been progressing well since the project started in February to install metered traffic lights at the southbound approach to the roundabout on Russell Street and a queue detector on the M4 off ramp. “A new 90 metre left turn lane on the roundabout approach is also being built as part of the project. “Work to improve drainage, move utilities, resurface the road and replace line marking and signage is also being carried out. “Roads and Maritime Services will replace sections of fencing along the off ramp with a 1.8 metre high wood panel fence. Some trees which need to be removed as part of the upgrade will be replanted as part of final finishing work.� �Major building works are being undertaken and will continue on weekdays and Sundays between 9pm and 5am until July, weather permitting. “During work partial lane closures will be in place. Motorists should plan their journey and follow all signs and the direction of traffic controllers,� Stuart Ayres said. Penrith City Congratulates Jessica Fox Penrith City Council congratulated Jessica Fox on her dual World Championship wins at the 2014 ICF Canoe Slalom Under 23 World Championships at Penrith Whitewater Stadium. Jessica is also the 2012 Olympic Games Silver medallist. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Jessica’s achievement meant a lot for Penrith City. “Winning dual world championships in the K1 and C1 disciplines is indeed a tremendous achievement for our very own Jessica Fox,� Cr Fowler said. “What makes that even more special is that Jessica was able to do this on her home course in front of her home crowd cheering for her all the way.� Penrith City welcomed more than 350 athletes, coaches and officials from 31 countries, however it was the local girl who showed the international contingent just how it was done. Penrith Whitewater Stadium was the venue for canoe/kayak slalom events during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and has already hosted the Australian Open and National Championships and the Oceania Championships this year. It’s also the training facility that has given Jessica the edge against a strong field of international paddlers. Cr Fowler said Penrith Whitewater Stadium had proven itself yet again in hosting top level competition for the world’s best paddlers. “We have a world class venue that is enjoyed by not only the world’s best kayak and canoe athletes but also recreational paddlers,� he said. “I’m proud that Penrith is the home to our newest World Champion.� For more information, contact Council on 4732 7632.

A Taxing Time?

When you read this the May Federal Budget may be just a dim memory. On the other hand, the end of Financial Year is almost upon us. Time to dig up those receipts and sort things out with the tax man. Will you do it enthusiastically? I for one am really glad to pay taxes. I believe in hospitals and medical care. I believe in roads and rail. I’m thankful for security and laws that keep people safe. I’m thankful for a smoothly running economy. I’m thankful that we can care for people in ways they can’t care for themselves And that’s not to say I don’t feel it when I pay taxes. But I have a choice. The choice is whether to see myself as the centre of the universe (or the country at least), or to give an enthusiastic nod to our community – our life together. Government is an integral part of that, and can do things in the interests of our community that individuals and companies can’t do alone. So when Jesus said love God, and love your neighbour, I can’t help but think that paying my taxes is a very real example of loving my neighbour.

Blue Mountains Creatives The Blue Mountains Creative Art Centre (BMCAC) is a not for profit organisation, which has been operating for over 30 years in Glenbrook. The Centre can be found on the corner of Hare and Moore Streets (near the Glenbrook Bowling Club) thanks to the support of their many volunteers and supporters. BMCAC hold three exhibitions each year at the Glenbrook Theatre Side Hall, where members can display and sell their works. They offer weekly pottery classes and a range of creative classes and workshops for both children and adults. The Centre has a kiln and wonderful teachers with expertise in a variety of pottery techniques. They also have a life drawing group, which meets each Friday, 10am to 12.30pm with different models each week. Whilst they do not “teach” life drawing, the sessions enable beginners through to those with advanced skills, to practice their skills and talk to others with similar creative interests. It’s a great social experience. Joy, the coordinator, can be contacted on 4739 2413. Overall, BMCAC bring together numerous creative people living in the Nepean/Penrith region through to Katoomba. Many of their members rely on the Centre to keep them active in the community, whilst also providing a creative outlet. PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com After many years working with kids, and having three of my own, I am firmly of the belief that parents talk too much. There’s too much questioning, nagging, lecturing, telling them what/how/ when/where/why, taking over, yelling, and yakkity-yak. Too much noise. When my kids come home from school, I ask “how was school”. I never expect any answer other than “good”. And I leave it at that, I rarely ask any more questions. Just asking the question opens up the possibility of communication. I know that each of them will come to me throughout the evening to tell me about their day. They do that when they are in the right space and frame of mind to talk, when they have sifted through all of the information and interactions they have experienced. And when they come to me, I LISTEN. I tend not to ask many questions, but I do a lot of reflective listening – repeating what they have said to me, reflecting on their emotions, being present, being silent and holding that space between their inner and outer worlds. I do the same with the children I work with. Reflective listening enables the child and I to get to the heart of what is bothering the child with very little effort. Everyone likes to be heard and have their thoughts and feelings validated. Parents are surprised when I tell them that I rarely offer solutions to children for their problems. I work alongside rather than stand over the top of. Kids are smart. Through reflective listening, children often get to the solution themselves, and because they have come up with it, they are committed to it. Dr Beth Onufrak in the USA has written a wonderful article on her blog “A Child in Mind” (wordpress). Titled “What’s wrong with the Wh questions?” she explains that questions shut a child down very quickly. Dr Onufrak says that “Wh” questions can be unhelpful because they: 1. Shut down a child’s own narration and conception of the problem 2. Block a child’s sharing of the salient details to him 3. Pigeonhole a child’s thinking into your categories of thought 4. Build a child’s frustration with us adults 5. Make a child more upset from the communication gap She advises that a better alternative is to say to the child “Tell me all about it”. I was talking with a parent recently. She said that her child comes to her to ask for help with a task, but when she tries to help her, the child storms off in a rage. The well-meaning parent then runs after the child asking her lots of “wh” questions to try to get to the bottom of the problem. The child becomes more resentful, and nothing gets resolved. I said that it sounded like there was a disconnect there somewhere, a gap between what the child wanted and what the parents saw as the child’s needs. I suggested that “I messages” are pretty good at sorting out misunderstandings. I wondered how the child might respond if the parent went to the child when she was calm and said something like “I don’t understand it when you ask me to help you with something, and I try to show you what to do, you then get upset and storm off. I would really like to know what I can do better next time, so we can work it out together”. “I messages” communicate how you feel about something without placing blame on anyone. Making time to ‘be with’ our kids, spending time, showing affection, being present, being available, being responsive and reflective, being alongside, and listening, truly listening, to our kids. When we do this , our kids return the effort in spades through being amazingly competent and communicative young ones.

Australian Air League Flying High The Australian Air League celebrates its 80th year of operation this year. Since its humble beginnings all those years ago, the aims of this not for profit organisation is to teach children and adults about aviation and discipline, whilst having fun and meeting new people. There are many activities that the Cadets of the Penrith squadron are involved in. This includes flying days, public parades, community events, athletics, swimming carnivals, along with a wide range of training, education and recreational camps. Penrith has both a boys and girls squadron that participate in large events such as the Annual Ceremonial Parade through the city of Sydney, alongside other squadrons from across the state. The 2014 Annual Ceremonial Parade was held last month and the Penrith squadron achieved great success. The Penrith Girls Squadron achieved 1st place in Flag Party and 1st place Best Squadron on the March. 3/4 Medium Sized Butternut Pumpkin, Skin and Seeds Removed, Chopped 2 Medium Potatoes, Chopped 1 Onion, Chopped 1-1 1/2 Tsp Mild Curry Powder Salt and Cracked Black Pepper 2 1/2 Cups Vegetable Stock 1 Cup Full Cream Chilli Powder To Taste, if Desired

Method 1. Place pumpkin, potatoes, onion, curry powder and stock in a large slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for several hours until vegetables are tender. 2. Turn off the heat and allow to cool. Using a food processor or stick blender, process until smooth. 3. Stir through the cream and chilli powder (if desired). Method 1. Preheat oven to 180ºC. Combine stock cubes and water in a jug. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a flameproof casserole dish over mediumhigh heat. Cook one-third of the beef for 2-3 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a plate. Repeat, in 2 more batches, with oil and remaining beef. 2. Heat the remaining oil in the dish. Add the bacon, brown onion and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until golden. Add the flour and tomato paste. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually add the wine, stirring constantly, until well combined. 3. Add the beef, stock, thyme and bay leaves to the bacon mixture. Cover and bake for 2 hours. 4. Meanwhile, melt butter in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the spring onion and mushrooms, stirring, for 5 minutes or until golden. 5. Add mushroom mixture to the dish. Library Funding a Concern Penrith City Council is asking local library lovers to join a state wide call to stop the ongoing reduction in funding from successive NSW State Governments to protect the future of their library. The campaign by the NSW Public Libraries Association is calling on the State Government to increase funding levels and has the support of Council. Libraries are often the most well-used and valued public facilities in the community, but the ability of Penrith Council to maintain service levels at its four libraries may be at risk due to a decline in funding over the last decade, according to Penrith City Council Library Manager Colin Stevenson. “Expenditure on public libraries from the state has decreased as a proportion of total public library expenditure from 23% in 1980 to only 7% in 2013. This has and will continue to impact on the ability of local libraries to meet the needs of their communities.” This is a historic issue that has now reached a crisis point. “Our public libraries play a very important part in our community life. Libraries bring people together, facilitate learning, connect us with information and ideas and provide a wonderful source of recreational pleasure,” said Mr Stevenson. “Libraries have evolved to become vibrant hubs that are seen as safe, welcoming spaces that serve a very important communitybuilding role. There is no doubt libraries improve the quality of life of everyone who uses them.” Aside from books and magazines, libraries also offer computer and internet access, literacy programs, family history research, seniors and children’s programs, and legal information. Mr Stevenson said the decrease in State funding is occurring at a time when libraries are experiencing increased demand including demand for government services and support for government programs like education. “Libraries service many different needs within the community. Families, seniors, students, job seekers are among those who will be affected if the State Government does not increase its funding in public libraries. “We are asking for community support through signing the petition at their local library. We need the community’s support to ensure we can continue to offer the services we they need.” Petitions are available at Penrith, St Clair, St Marys and Emu Plains libraries. Winter is No Excuse With winter here it is very easy to give in to those food cravings. The cakes, hot chocolate, sweet biscuits etc that make you feel good when the weather has you feeling a bit down. Before long you have put on several kilos, your clothes are feeling a bit tighter and you know it’s going to be a struggle to reduce the weight again before summer. It’s true that weight reduction or weight gain is relative to the calories in versus calories out, but being stressed, or feeling down also plays a big part. Treibball (pronounced try-ball) is an awesome new dog sport and is a fun game for dogs of any size or breed. Til Death do us Part While a thorny issue at times, it’s often worth having a discussion around inheritance. Letting people know what is coming, or not, can avoid nasty surprises and expensive claims later down the track. Estate planning is a fundamental part of financial planning, with the main aim being to plan for the distribution of assets in an effective manner after death. An estate plan will seek to ensure a person’s assets are distributed in accordance with their wishes through a Will, superannuation nominations, life insurance and possibly testamentary trusts. While a financial adviser can facilitate and oversee the estate planning process, it is a collaborative process involving a lawyer to establish a Will - a legal document which sets out how a deceased’s assets and possessions are passed on. A tax accountant may also be required to advise on any tax consequences. Have a Little Trust In every family there could be a range of potential beneficiaries, some of whom may be too young to handle the proceeds of an estate. Other beneficiaries may be mentally impaired, or have a substance abuse or spending problem requiring careful oversight of how income or assets are passed to them. A testamentary trust may be useful in such situations. A testamentary trust exists within a Will and comes into being upon death. Instead of passing to a beneficiary, assets pass to a testamentary trust, administered by a trustee, for the beneficiary or beneficiaries. For example, under a testamentary trust, the trustee could pay a regular income to a beneficiary rather than the beneficiary receiving all the funds in a lump sum. Trusts are also used for asset protection. In the event a beneficiary got into financial difficulty, assets held within the trust ordinarily could not be reached by creditors. Testamentary trusts are also useful should children get divorced and remarry. Assets held within a trust are generally excluded from property settlements. Life Insurance and Superannuation There are some assets which fall outside the Will, such as superannuation and life insurance. Non superannuation life insurance benefits can be directed to

nominated beneficiaries. The nomination is made directly with the insurance company and is generally paid to the beneficiary tax free. Superannuation can also be directed to beneficiaries outside of the Will. Where a superannuation fund allows, a binding nomination is made through the fund itself. In the event a binding nomination is not allowed the trustees of the fund decide who receives the money. Tax Considerations The tax office can end up doing quite well from inherited property and superannuation assets. With superannuation, the calculations around what tax may need to be paid by the beneficiary can be complicated and may require advice from a tax accountant. The type of contributions made to the fund, including fully taxed (eg. employer contributions, salary sacrifice) and untaxed (eg. additional tax-free contributions), is also relevant. An adult, non-dependent beneficiary who receives super benefits could pay 0-30 per cent in tax depending on how the deceased made the contributions to the super fund. With property, care needs to be taken when beneficiaries inherit different assets. Consider one beneficiary inherits the family home, while another inherits the holiday house. The beneficiary getting the family home will generally not be liable to pay tax, while the beneficiary of the holiday house will probably have to pay capital gains tax when it is sold. Tax issues may arise if a family home is transferred into a trust for asset protection purposes. The home may no longer qualify for the principal residence capital gains tax exemption and may be subject to stamp duty on transfer and ongoing land tax. Where a family home is passed on outside of a trust, the beneficiaries have two years to sell it before it becomes subject to capital gains tax. Always seek tax advice from a qualified tax accountant in regard to all of these issues. Estate planning can be extremely complex depending on an individual’s circumstances. Financial advisers work collaboratively with other professionals such as lawyers and accountants to ensure a client’s wishes are met. Having the family’s blessing is a bonus.
