A Top Performance for Nepean High NSW Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Barry O’Farrell officially opened the new $4.9 million performing arts facility at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School in May – delivering on an election commitment for the Penrith community. “This is a great day for Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School, which now has the specialist facilities the school needs and deserves,” Mr O’Farrell said at the opening. “The Nepean Arts Centre gives teachers and students the best possible environment to learn and showcase their skills instead of operating out of a makeshift classroom. “The NSW Liberals & Nationals promised the performing arts facility before the election - we have fully-funded and delivered it in Government. “We are getting on with the job of delivering important infrastructure projects for families in Penrith and the rest of the Western Sydney region.” The project includes a state-of-the-art movement studio with retractable seating and a dance performance workshop. Other features include a control room, student change rooms and toilets, access toilets, store rooms, a staff room, office and servery, games court and car parking. Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the facility finally gives Western
Sydney a venue that helps meet its long-term creative and performing arts education needs. “The previous Labor Government announced many years ago that Nepean High School would become a centre of arts excellence but never provided the facilities to make it happen,” Mr Ayres said. “This gives students in Western Sydney the very best opportunity to reach their potential.”

From the Editor Have you noticed that the nights are getting a bit nippy? Walking out the door in the morning into the c-c-c-cold wind? Yes, winter is here. Time to put your feet up in front of the fire, with a nice warm cup of tea and enjoy your local community gazette. For your eating pleasure, there’s a hearty winter meal for you to try on page 9. And speaking of eating, Glenmore Park Anglican Church is hosting “THE Masterchef”, a culinary spectacular – see page 4 for details. We have a new local sporting hero. BMX whizz Nicole Docherty of Leonay has just returned from a very successful National titles. Read all about it on page 10. This issue is packed with lots of advice. Have a read of our new regular column, Money Matter$ on page 7. For some sage parenting tips, see Narelle Smith’s regular article in Parent’s Corner (page 8). Richard Bock – Back in Shape Chiropractic Do you suffer from neck and back pain or sciatica? Well, here’s the good news – renowned mountains chiropractor Richard Bock has just relocated to Emu Plains. Back in Shape Chiropractic is an established practice, maintaining the back health of the mountains community for over 10 years. Whilst still practicing in Katoomba once a week, Richard has moved his business from Mt Riverview to a convenient new and spacious location in Billington Place, just off the highway, in Emu Plains. Since moving down the hill, Richard has been busy with an influx of new clients, as well as his mountain regulars. He treats people of all ages, and works predominantly with neck and back issues as well as sciatic problems. Consultations are of half hour duration; typically beginning with remedial massage flowed by traditional chiropractic adjustments. Richard has a Masters in Chiropractic from Macquarie University. When not busy putting our backs into shape, Richard enjoys the active mountains lifestyle, with a passion for outdoor pursuits such as canyoning, abseiling and extreme tyrolean traversing. Richard’s longest tryloean traverse of 1.8km at Wyangala fell just short of the Guinness Book of Records Longest traverse.

Trust for Life Trust. Its something we need for life. We trust our homes will weather the wind and the rain. We trust that the banks will give us our money when we go to the ATM. We trust the people we live with and around will be kind to us. Now you could go through life without trusting anyone, but it wouldn’t be much of a life, would it? But it’s usually with people that we find trust the hardest. Have they shown themselves worthy of trust? What’s their track record with others? What’s their track record with you? All of us have learned through disappointment that not everyone is worthy of trust. We decide who we trust on the basis of evidence. When we find people who are worthy of our trust, we stick with them. When people find us to be worthy of trust, they generally stick with us. Jesus invited people to trust him on the basis of the evidence. He demonstrated he was in control of the world, and sickness, and even death. And the words he spoke resonated with what God had been saying for many years before. That life with God, forgiveness, and life to the full was available through him. It’s all available for us to read and test for ourselves in the Bible, to decide for ourselves on the basis of the evidence (you could start with the Gospel of Mark). And the response Jesus was looking for? Well, it turns out it’s trust! Rev Roger Cunningham

Blue Dragon Links Vietnam Street Kids With McCarthy Kids Australian teacher Michael Brosowski took up a lecturing job with a Vietnamese university in 2003. He soon found himself teaching English to street kids and this became concern for their nourishment, health and accommodation. Ten years later Michael has saved a huge number of children from being trafficked as slave factory workers, being abused in brothels or sold as wives. The Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation he founded and the Order of Australia are testimony to his and fellow foundation workers wonderful achievements. Michael and Vietnamese colleague Vi visited McCarthy Catholic College and told students of their challenges and sometimes dangerous missions to rescue trafficked children and young women. However, Michael made it clear that the joy and satisfaction of helping young Vietnamese was the only reward he sought. When the Australian Governor-General the Honourable Quentin Bryce visited Vietnam, Michael declined an invitation to lunch, instead choosing to lunch with a Vietnamese boy; it was the boy’s birthday and no-one had ever celebrated it with him. McCarthy Captain Antonio Auddino commented, “Michael was inspiring. It’s fantastic to understand Michael’s commitment to benefiting the lives of young Vietnamese. He certainly made us consider others rather than ourselves. Some of us Australian kids will think about volunteering in the future!”

MONEY MATTER$ With Alex McKenzie – Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au
Turning the Aussie Dream into reality –Buying your First Home Purchasing your first home can seem so far away, but a financial planner can help you achieve your goal by establishing processes to keep you disciplined and consistent and work towards your goal. In a lot of cases the role of a financial planner is similar to a personal trainer, although the technical expertise is helpful, the main benefit is often simply keeping you honest with yourself and having someone to remind you to do what you know has to be done! The first step is to identify the cost of your home, it is important not to over extend. It is best to identify what you would like to pay in repayments each month and work backwards to determine how much that repayment translates to in total borrowings; this should be your upper limit. A financial planner can do this calculation on your behalf. Once you have identified what your mortgage payment will be each month, we compare this to your current housing costs, this should be less the your repayments for your home. Future Financial Services call this difference the mortgage savings gap. This Mortgage savings gap is used to save for your deposit and legal costs. The theory behind this is clear, if you want a home, you will have to be making these payments shortly, so if you can’t afford to put this money aside now, you won’t be able to when you purchase your home. The plan is simple, set up a low risk investment, ideally a cash management trust or another fixed interest investment and each month contribute the mortgage savings gap into this investment. This will create the habit of making the mortgage payment once you buy your home, and will show excellent savings history to the lenders when you are trying to get finance and most importantly build funds for your deposit and legal costs. In addition to the mortgage savings gap, many couples are able and prepared to make some short term changes to their lifestyle to save for a house, changes they are happy to make for the short term to achieve their goal, but not for the length of the loan. Some people are willing to sacrifice the occasional dinner at a restaurant or their annual holiday. We call these fast track savings, the amount people will be able to fast track is harder to pinpoint. Some people have lots of “fat” in the budget they are prepared to temporarily cut out, others do not. To make it easier as our clients forego these “luxuries” as they do so we encourage them to immediately save the funds into the “home account”, that will prevent the temptation to spend it down the track, and if clients can see why they are making the sacrifices and can see their “Aussie dream” getting closer, the sacrifices are easy to make. The final area for saving is the “ongoing surplus”, this money that will be left over after a client makes their mortgage payment (or current housing costs plus the mortgage savings gap) with their normal lifestyle. Not everyone has this gap, but we encourage clients to save these excess funds as well. If you are interested in saving for a home please contact us on 4727 6588 or visit our website www.futurefinancialservices.com.au

McCarthy goes to Q and A If you were watching Q and A a few weeks ago, you would have seen McCarthy students putting questions to the Prime Minister as part of the High School Showdown. McCarthy entered a competition to be part of the studio audience for this once in a lifetime opportunity, and after submitting a brief video explaining why they should be invited, we were successful. Schools form around Australia travelled to the ABC studios in Ultimo to be part of the live recording of the television show. College Captain, Antonio Auddino was fortunate enough to be able to ask the Prime Minister a question about nuclear weapons and Australia’s global role. Antonio said, “It was a great experience. I just wanted to ask what she thought, and I was pleased with the answer she gave.”

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity. org.au Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com A few months ago, a parent emailed me and asked about a problem she was having with her children… Both of my boys are at school now and they are obviously tired. The thing I am struggling most with at the moment is the flat-out refusals. I give them an option of say bath or homework and they say “No, I’m not doing it”. I start with a count to 3 and they still refuse. I take away a privilege and they still refuse. I’m not sure where to go with it. I’ve tried time out, removing more privileges but the battle can end up so much bigger than the initial request. Sometimes when I offer to help it works but other times it ends with me delaying the required task. This just adds more pressure later in the evening. If it’s not completely necessary I make a deal to do it the next night and they usually are pretty good with it. I was just wondering what you have in your toolbox for when your kids simply dig their heels in. My reply… Bath or homework? None of those sound particularly appealing to boys who like to be grubby and not have to think about spelling and maths beyond the school gate. I’d choose Lego over those two any time too. My 7 year old regularly says No to doing the tasks of life because his head is in la-la-land. From what you wrote – I make a deal to do it the next night and they usually are pretty good with it – this is communicating expectations and making a plan to get it done. For me, I always fall back on communication – communicating expectations. I do it oh so much. I communicate on Sunday what the week is going to look like. I communicate at dinner what the next day is going to look like. I communicate at breakfast what the evening is going to look like. When we get home of an afternoon I communicate the plan for the next 6 hours or so. At dinner I remind the boys that they need to have a wash tonight and the boys negotiate amongst themselves who is going first. Lots of communication, and when I forget to do it things don’t go as well. When my boys were little I used to communicate what was going to happen before we went anywhere. They had limited experience of the world. They didn’t know what a vaccination at the doctor’s office meant, or a dental examination, or how to control themselves in aisle 3 at the supermarket (you know the one). Trying to talk them through it when they are in situ and overwhelmed is not going to cut it. Less anxiety creates happier times. If it’s going to hurt, or be boring or busy or challenging or scary, acknowledge it and talk about ways you can get through it. Kids appreciate honesty, it builds trust. I talked them through what was going to happen during the day ahead or at the particular event we were going to. If we were going to the supermarket, for example, before we went out the door I communicated the rules, what behaviour I expected from them, how long we were going to be, what they could do to help, and the reward for successfully completing the mission. I anticipated hunger, thirst, tiredness, and boredom, and packed a bag of food, water, comfort items, and small but interesting activities. Being able to meet kid’s needs when they arise builds trust. Because I did that with them when they were little, I don’t need to do it so much now they are older, they have become competent enough to manage themselves. I am somewhat flexible and I am open to negotiation. Your family should transition from dictatorship when the kids are little, to democracy as they grow older. If the boys can come up with a plan that suits them better but it still gets the job done, and it doesn’t impact on others, then that is great. on her. And it means that the child is taking responsibility for him/herself. My 7 year-old LOVES movies and wants to watch a movie every afternoon, but we negotiate a plan where homework and reader is done before he can watch a movie. Or we commit to do readers at soccer training during the down-times. But when things need to happen, as they do, and there’s no room for flexibility or negotiation, it gets done! Withdrawing privileges is my last resort and because I use it so rarely, my boys know that when I am deducting computer time I mean business. Parenting is a balance of TAKING CHARGE and BEING KIND. Most difficulties can be addressed through being kind and considering that children are people too. Our job as parents is to guide and educate our children to know better and do better, and I’m not sure that children learn that through time-outs or withdrawal of privileges. It leaves them angry, resentful, and none the wiser.
Next parent workshop: Special Playtime, 18th June 2013, 10am to 12:30pm, Floribunda Community Centre, Glenmore Park. How to build relationship with your child through play. Change negative behaviour (tantrums, stubbornness, anger) into more positive behaviour.

THIS SPORTING LIFE
HAWKESBURY WOLVES TAEKWONDO
BMX Queen
Local Leonay lass Nicole Docherty, has been riding BMX’s since she was three. Now, at 18, her dedication to the sport has paid off with success at the recent BMX Australian titles held in Brisbane last month. Nicole finished 3rd in the 17+ ladies and 2nd in the 1729 ladies cruiser (the cruiser being a larger bike with 24 inch wheels). She is now looking forward to competing in the upcoming BMX world Titles in Auckland, New Zealand this July. In addition to riding Nicole also coaches kids. In recognition of her contribution to the sport she was received BMX Australia’s Female Coach of the Year award. Nicole’s passion for the sport began 15 years ago when, as a toddler, she would watch her big brother ride BMX’s. What she loves most about the sport, aside from the huge adrenaline rush every time she races, is the social side. She has made many friends from travelling to events all over the country. When not racing, Nicole is pursuing a Bachelor of Policing degree at Western Sydney uni. r Nicole Docherty in action at the recent BMX Australian Titles in Brisbane
