Fieldwork: Landscapes West of Sydney

Penrith Regional Art Gallery is thrilled to present Fieldwork: Landscapes West of Sydney, a travelling exhibition drawn from the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ treasured collection of late 19th and early to mid-20th century paintings and works on paper. With a focus on artists’ camps and painting expeditions organised at the Hawkesbury region, the Blue Mountains and Sydney’s western suburbs on Darug, Tharawal and Gundungurra Country, Fieldwork brings together significant and seldom seen works by prominent artists. A highlight of the exhibition is Spring Frost 1919, arguably Elioth Gruner's crowning achievement. Painted at Innes Farm in Emu Plains, the painting was awarded the Wynne Prize in 1919 and is one of the most celebrated and recognised works in the Gallery’s collection. Gruner’s Spring Frost is currently displayed within close proximity to where it was painted, with Fieldwork travelling to Penrith Regional Gallery for the first time, beginning in March 2021. Assistant curator of Australian art Nick Yelverton said, “Fieldwork explores how the combination of plein air painting with budding nationalism and a deepening appreciation of Australian scenery during the late 19th century, inspired landscape artists to escape the city and portray nature and rural pastimes”. Visitors will also be able to see significant works by artist and teacher Julian Ashton who was among the earliest proponents of plein-air painting in Sydney and inspired subsequent generations of artists to travel to Richmond and the Hawkesbury region. Other key works in the show include Sydney Long’s Midday 1896, Roland Wakelin’s Narellan 1917 and Hilda Rix Nicholas’ Through the gum trees, Toongabbie c1920. Exhibition runs from 13 March - 9 May 2021 Cost: FREE WATCH THIS SPACE A new exhibition of works from the Penrith Regional Gallery Collection will open in Ancher House in April. Keep an eye on the Gallery’s social channels and website for more news. r

NSW Government Helps Deliver $100 Million Nepean River Precinct Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith recently joined Minister for Local Government, Shelly Hancock MP to showcase the NSW Governments massive investment in the Nepean River precinct. The opening of the Yandhai Nepean Crossing delivered in late 2018 has been a catalyst in encouraging investment into the river precinct by the private sector. Key examples of this investment include The East Bank restaurants and the repurposing of Emu Hall. Additionally, the newly approved Orchard will be under construction this year and will offer a unique five-acre hospitality venue featuring new cafes, restaurants, bars and an inclusive playground and animal yards. This year will also see the return of the Log Cabin with early works now underway. The new Log Cabin design comprises of a two-story hotel offering indoor and outdoor bars and dining options overlooking the Nepean River. Stuart Ayres said these developments show the confidence the private sector has in Penrith on the back of the NSW Government’s investments. The NSW Government recently announced $1.5M towards the restoration of the old Police Cottage. A police station and residence were originally erected in 1908 and functioned until 1921. The residence continued to be used for officers until the 1950s before being rented out as a private residence until 2015. The heritage-listed cottage will be given a new lease of life for visitors to enjoy. To further enhance the river walk and the river precinct, Regatta Park is set to become a new focal point with a $24M transformation through the Western Sydney City Deal. Following community consultation, the final designs were released in late 2020 and features over-water viewing platforms, two new playgrounds, an accessible path to the river foreshore, outdoor dining areas and kiosk. Tench Reserve will be revitalised through a $10M grant from the NSW Governments Parks for People Program. Shelly Hancock MP said, “The Nepean River precinct is a great example of strong collaboration between the State and Local Government working to deliver great public amenity”. “This is an area loved by locals and visitors and delivering these amazing enhancements is a win for the Penrith community”. Stuart Ayres said, “The Berejiklian Government has led the way in bringing the Nepean River precinct to life. There is now over $100M invested in the Nepean River precinct and that is a truly outstanding outcome for Penrith”. Additional enhancements funded by support from the NSW Government that have been made to the river precinct include: • The new Tench Reserve Boat Ramp with, new 3 lane boat ramp, 10 new vehicle parking bays, 34 new boat trailer parking bays, new jetties along the foreshore, landscaping, lighting, • River walk footpath upgrades, • New fishing platform, • New children’s playground. r

My Grandfather the ANZAC

Our Service men and women have contributed enormously to the security and comfort of all Australians. Without them leaving the comforts of their home and going into battle, we would have quite a different life than what we enjoy now. About 20 years ago, I became interested in family history. I wanted to discover my past and the sacrifices that different members of my family made. How did they influence my life and that of their own families? I knew that Alfred Pennell, my maternal grandfather was in WW1, but little else about his service record or what he endured at this time. Through luck and discussions with a friend, I received a package from ‘Canberra War Service’, which told me a lot about the time he spent in the forces. He enlisted on 14th August 1915 and was in the 3rd Battalion AIF. He was just 21 years and one month. He embarked for active service on board the HMAS Wiltshire on 22nd August 1915 and was posted overseas. He fought in one of the bloodiest battles of WW1 at Bullecourt in France and was wounded in battle and sent home on 24th August 1917. It was stated in his military documents that he had trachoma of both eyes and corneal ulcers, explaining “he is unfit for any form of military service”. Fardy or Poppy as we knew him, was a broken man. He had a great deal of difficulty getting work when he returned to Australia and consequently travelled around the country. From his life in Mudgee, Coonabarabran, Winton and a lot of other little towns in the mid-west area, he took on whatever work he could get to feed his family. He also spent a lot of time unemployed. His children were born throughout the west. It was also a hard life for his wife (my grandmother) and she passed away when she was only 52 years old. My father’s uncle enlisted in Mudgee and his embarkation was in Newcastle on 17th May 1915. He left Australia on board the HMAS Malakuta, at 26 years of age. He joined the 5th Light Horse Regiment as a trooper. This brave, young soldier was killed just 6 days later at Gallipoli and now rests at Shell Green Cemetery at Gallipoli in Turkey. My story is not unique, and I know many families suffered losses too. Lest We Forget.

Salvos Food Drop a Great Success Last month, the Lions Club of Emu Plains in conjunction with Evan Jangil, Store Manager for Woolworths at Emu Plains, organised to run a ‘food trolley drop’ for the benefit of the Salvation Army. Locals came together to help support the charity and the event was a huge success. Woolworths’ shoppers were asked to donate one extra, non-perishable item over their normal shop by placing it in the designated Salvation Army trolley, located at the checkout. This initiative between Emu Plains Lions and Woolworths Emu Plains relied on the generosity of Woolworths shoppers from the local area. The result was approx. 27 trolleys full of goods donated! “The feedback indicated that shoppers had been alerted to the project from the article in the Emu and Leonay Gazette and the Emu Plains Lions and Emu Plains Neighbourhood Community Facebook pages” said the Emu Plains Lions. “The team and I from the Salvation Army Freedom Centre were blown away by the generosity of the Emu Plains community” said Andrea Martin, Greater West Team Leader for the Salvation Army. She added, “We know how much this food will bless families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet. Thank you to all who gave so generously”. Plans are already underway for another food drop in the future.

Got a Fussy Eater?

The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what they don’t eat, focus on what they do eat, and expand their range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If they get a lot of attention for their fussy eating, they will do more of it. Fussy eaters can be extremely determined and persistent (some might say ‘stubborn’). There is a strategy recommended by Dr Thomas Phelan – the back-up meal. You give your child tiny proportions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The only stipulation is that they have to try what is on the plate. They can eat what they want to and leave what they want to but they have to give it a bit of a go. If they like some of it they can have more. You give your child lots of descriptive praise for what they try and eat. The child at any time is able to ask for their back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. The backup meal is always the same. You pay no attention whatsoever to your child eating their back-up meal. Slowly but surely your child will eat more of the main meal and less of the back-up meal. This can take time – months or years. Just be consistent. You can be more persistent than your child, right? When I tell people the above story, they are concerned about the child “winning”. Is parenting a battle or a race? Are our children our enemies or adversaries? What is the most positive way to approach the situation? It’s better to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. Force, yelling, and manipulation will only work for a short time and the effects on your child are not that great. Never start a war with your child over food – you will not win. r

Local Girl Guides Shine Emu Plains Girl Guides are looking forward to a bright year ahead and they’ve started just that with lots of colour! The local group have recently redecorated their guide hall as a start to spread lots of positivity to the local community. “This year, we decided that we wanted to really brighten up the hall and make it an inviting space for the Girl Guides to come to each week. We used the bathroom doors as a canvas to spread positivity after being inspired by similar projects in schools. We only have the three doors but are very tempted to continue the theme. Maybe even outside to share this spirit with the local community” explained Thea Hams of Emu Plains Girl Guides. “We have also reached out to a lot of amazing services to visit with the Girl Guides and to get them out in the local area, after missing out on so much last year” added Thea. Some of these experiences include learning road safety through CARES, kayaking and traditional girl guiding skills like camping and lending a hand. They will be running the ‘Guidepreneur’ Challenge within their tween Guide unit, where the girls are challenged to develop their own product to take to market. This challenge includes problem solving, life skills such as planning and money management and introduces them to the possibilities

of entrepreneurship. The Girl Guides have the opportunity to attend events facilitated by Girl Guides NSW/ACT/NT such as the Taronga Zoo Sleepout and the Centenary Celebration Camp celebrating 100 years of Girl Guides in NSW. “We currently have availability in both units, which are the Junior Guides (7-10 years old) and Guides (10-14 years old). We are also looking for leaders to join us in facilitating this amazing program and supporting girls in our local community” said Thea. Emu Plains Girl Guides meet at the Emu Plains Guide Hall on Mondays in the school term. FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister | P: 4735 1001 | E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

What is Faith? What is faith? I’ve heard people say it’s ‘believing something which can’t be proved’. I’ve even heard people describe it as ‘believing something that you know is not true’. Wow! But I’ve also come across views of faith which are different. And do people think faith is different when they’re talking about religious things rather than everyday things? I love the example of walking into a room and sitting on a chair. What are you doing when you do that? You’re putting your faith in that chair. Will it hold you up? Are all the legs in good repair? Is it kid’s size or adult size? You probably don’t even realise you’re thinking this stuff through, but once you put your weight on it, you’re committed, and will soon find out if your faith was well placed. And that’s the thing. It doesn’t matter how much faith you have at that point, what matters is the chair you’ve put your faith in. And I can tell you – it’s not fun when have one of the legs come out from under you! Now this may surprise you – faith in the Bible is ‘sitting on the chair’ faith, not like the alternate views of faith I mentioned above. When a centurion who led soldiers asked Jesus to heal his servant, he compared himself to Jesus. When we command it - it happens! And Jesus said, ‘I tell you; I have not found such great faith even in Israel’ (Luke 7:9). And what happened next - the servant was healed. Why? Because Jesus really had the authority over sickness and death. Let me encourage you not to make a decision about Jesus, or leave off making a decision about Jesus, until you check out the convincing reasons why you can trust him too.

You have a Slipped Disc – So what is a Disc and what does this mean? ‘Intervertebral discs’ have a hard outer connective-tissue (anulus fibrosus) and a ‘gelatinous’ interior (nucleus pulposus). At top and bottom are endplates, the transition tissues between disc and bone. Discs have several important functions. They act as: 1. Shock absorbers for the vertebral column 2. Ligaments that tie the vertebra above & below the disc together 3. Spacers between vertebra to allow appropriate nerve-exit from the spine. 4. Movement-enablers for vertebrae relative to each other allowing us to bend and twist As we age discs tissues may begin to deteriorate and weaken showing progressive signs of disc disease. This weakening may eventually lead to herniation of one (or more) discs, which we colloquially call a “slipped disc”. Disc herniation often occurs gradually but significant trauma can also lead to disc extrusion or sequestration. Disc-herniation stages are picture. If a herniated disc contacts a nerve, this may result in significant nerve compression (occlusion) and pain in the lower back and down the nerve course. Compression may also lead

10 April 2021 www.emuleonaygazette.com.au

to ‘radiculopathy’, i.e. pathological changes in nerve function resulting in one of several ‘neurological deficits’ including: 1. Sensory changes such as tingling, altered sensation or numbness, 2. Motor changes such as muscle weakness or reflex loss. Any/all such symptoms, often referred to as sciatica, may be experienced by patients with a slipped disc. MRIs (involving no radiation exposure) are the best scan for enabling physicians to see the soft spinal tissues unseen with conventional x-ray. Things are however a little more complex than this. A study by Luoma et. Al. (2000) showed that many patients may have both low back pain and sciatica yet have no disc bulges. A further study by Livshits in 2011 showed that degeneration of the discs alone, whether or not a bulge was present, was highly associated with lower back pain and so it may be that the chemicals of inflammation released from degenerating disc tissue become a key factor in generating lower back pain, possibly sciatica. As discussed here previously, cleaning muscles of inflammatory infiltrate while lengthening them is key to tissue healing & remediation of symptoms.

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give a medication to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. r Happy Easter from our four legged friends! | Image: www.pixabay.com

As we prepare the April edition for print, parts of our state and our very own communities have been engulfed by severe rainfall and floods, it has been quoted in the media to be a 'once in a century' event. I know it comes as no surprise that the community has banded together once again with complete strangers offering accommodation, while others assist with the boarding of pets, supply of clothes, transportation, food and so many other offers of support. It makes me so proud and privileged to be a part of this wonderful community we call home. As we move through April, we hope to put this event behind us. But, like COVID, there will be plenty of work ahead in rebuilding and restoring life 'after the floods'. Try and catch your breath, take a moment to read about all the latest happenings in Your Community News. It's very fitting that I end with this, 'Always help someone, you may be the only one who does'. Happy Easter, enjoy Your Community News.
