FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: David Simmons | Assistant Minister | P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

A Better Team I retired from the NRL at the end of the 2015 season after 13 years of full-time footy. Eventually you get too old and slow to play. The question I get asked the most these days is, “Do you miss it?” I don’t miss the injuries, or pre-season training in a Penrith summer, and I certainly don’t miss lying awake after games replaying all my missed opportunities. There are things you miss. I miss the pre-game nerves of the dressing room, the intensity on the field, and soaking up those final minutes of a game you know you’ve won. But by far the thing I miss the most is being part of the team. Working and striving toward the goal of premiership glory together as one. Now I’ve retired from that team and I miss it, but it’s OK because I’m part of another team, a better one. After footy, I studied at Bible college and now work at my local church. Church is not a super religious word, a church is like a team a group of people gathered together for a common purpose - only it's better because the church is God’s team and it has a better goal. We believe God is gathering people for himself to be with him forever in eternity. You don’t need any special skills to join, only believe in Jesus. God calls all people everywhere to do just that, and welcomes all who do. Best of all, unlike the Panthers, you never have to retire from this team (no matter how old and slow you get), not in this life or the next. Why don’t you check out your local church this week? We’d love to see you there.

Who would have thought that some friendly banter between a couple of mates about sport would one day turn into one of the most popular, local podcasts in the area? Armchair Champions started their podcast in 2018 and are now in their second season. The program has already gathered a cult-like status amongst local sports enthusiasts and can be found on podcast platforms like Spotify. “We always talk about sports and stars with mates over a beer, so we thought we would turn that into a podcast, offering unbiased opinions on the hot topics in sport” said Brett “The Captain” McVea of Armchair Champions. The Armchair Champions cast is made up of Brett “The Captain” McVea, Michael “The Sheriff ” Taylor, Greg “The Viper” Taylor, Richard “The Unit” Mortimer and Troy “Radar” Worner. They record every Tuesday at their studio in Emu Plains. Already, their list of guests reads like a who’s who of Australian sport and includes Bec Cleary (who holds the record still for the most downloads), Ivan Cleary, Nathan Cleary, Tim Grant, Josh Morris, Jeff Fenech, Mark Winterbottom, Paul Sironen, Royce Simmons, Eric Grothe Snr, Dale Shearer, Ted Richards, James Te Huna, Brett Kenny, Mark Geyer, Andrew Ryan, Brad Drew, Colin Vandervoort, Mitch Barnett, Rob Beveridge, James Hooper, Gus Worland, Sam McKendry, Brian Fletcher, Dave O’Neill and more. “We’ve had fun with all of them, but the Cleary’s, Mark Geyer and Tim Grant have had the most laughs with us” said Brett to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. International sports superstars Tom Brady and Michael Jordan are top of their list of dream interviewees. Locally, it’s Andrew Johns and Gary Ablett Jr that feature. “We’ve been approached to do some live shows at venues, so that would be a great experience for the team. We’ve also got some merchandise in the pipeline too” ended Brett. We have no doubt there will be more high-profile sportspeople interviewed by the team in the future. A local family have come together to form Team Devine and will be participating in Parkinson’s NSW 12th Unity Walk in the Park, taking place on Sunday 25th August at Sydney Park in St Peters, whilst raising valuable funds for charity. Jim Devine, of Emu Plains, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2009. Jim’s daughter Lisa Berwick has organised an Everyday Hero donation site to raise funds for the disease and to help make a difference. Unity Walk in the Park is the annual fundraising initiative of Parkinson’s NSW, to support vital research and services for people living with Parkinson’s. The Unity Walk aims to bring people together to show support for loved ones and remember those touched by Parkinson’s. Over the past 11 years, this event has raised over $1,000,000 thanks to the efforts of more than 16,700 participants. “My Dad is a Parkinson’s sufferer and for many years, my family have participated in the Parkinson’s Unity Walk. We started when my son, Jack, was a baby and continue walking to raise awareness for this cause. I would love to find a cure in my lifetime and continue to raise funds for research, support groups and therapists for those in need. We would greatly appreciate any support you might be able to give. No amount is too small, and all donations contribute in a meaningful way” said Lisa. Jim and wife Cheryl are also both members of the Lions Club of Emu Plains and support many charities and charitable causes. This includes DonateLife, the organ transplant initiative. Their granddaughter Kyla received a liver transplant when she was just 4 months old. Earlier this year, Kyla joined the Penrith Panthers and Ivan Cleary to spread the word when Team Devine visited the Panthers Academy. Lions will raise awareness of organ and tissue donation in DonateLife Week from 28th July to 4th August. Fox Lifts Australian Spirits with Tacen Gold Medal Leonay’s Jessica Fox picked up her first gold medal for the 2019 season on the last day of competition at the third ICF canoe slalom world cup in Tacen, Ljubljana, recently. Once again there was frustration for the Australian men, with both Lucien Delfour and Daniel Watkins picking up 50-second penalties for missing gates, ruling them out of the K1 final. But there was to be no denying Fox, despite two gate touches, which made the final margin in the women’s C1 much tighter. After dominating the 2018 season, Australian multiple-world champion Jessica Fox has struggled to find her groove this year. On the final day, she made a return to the top of the podium, posting 103.06, including four seconds of penalties, to win the C1 gold. 24 hours earlier Fox had been left devastated after picking up a 50 second penalty which kept her out of the K1 final. “It’s been a hard start to the year, and I was really upset and disappointed with my race in not making the final, so I really wanted to bounce back and show what I could do” Fox said. “There were a couple of mistakes in that run, but overall I’m super happy and super proud. “I train to do my best, and strive for excellence in every run, and when it doesn’t happen it’s disappointing. So, you do put pressure on yourself, but you have to learn. Everyone is vulnerable”. The win wraps up the first half of the 2019 world cup series with the world’s greatest female slalom paddler adding C1 gold to her two bronze medals in both the women’s K1 and C1 at the first world cup in London, Great Britain mid-June (14-16 June 2019). At the second world cup in Bratislava, Slovakia, Fox finished sixth in the K1 and missed the C1 final. This also sees Fox take over the lead on the overall C1 world cup standings after three races. On the K1 overall world cup standings, Fox is ranked fifth.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Escalation traps are one of the most common types of parent traps, and involve ‘child escalation’ and ‘parent escalation’. Child Escalation When children want something and don’t get it, they can learn that by escalating in their behaviour or emotions (hitting, crying, whining, nagging) they can get what they want. For example, a child wants a lolly in the supermarket. Although you say ‘no’ the child gets louder and more demanding, and you give in to avoid the fuss and judgement from other people in the store. What is your child learning from this? Parent Escalation When parents want something from their children they can escalate (nagging, shouting) to get the child to complete the task. For example, you want the child to switch off the computer and come to dinner. You ask several times and each time gets louder. You get to the point where you are screaming at your child, counting, or making threats and demands. This is where the parent says “my child never listens to me”. What is your child learning from this? Combination Of Parent And Child Escalation You can have a combination of child and parent escalation. The parent escalates in response to the child’s escalation, and fairly soon tempers are frayed, feelings are hurt, and nothing productive or helpful has been achieved. What are you and your child learning from this? Remedy? Give clear, calm instructions. Stay calm, and follow through, so that your child knows that when you say ‘no’ you mean ‘no’ and when you want something done it gets done within a reasonable time frame without a fuss. And as always, continue to build a strong relationship with your child based on love, nurture and trust, because the strength of the relationship determines how much your child will listen and respond to you. I am back to doing individual parenting work after several months away working in another program. If you are struggling with your parenting, it’s OK to ask for help (it’s free).

50 Years for Glenbrook/Lapstone Rural Fire Brigade

Last month, Glenbrook/Lapstone Rural Fire Brigade celebrated 50 years of serving the community, which included celebrations at the Emu Sports Club in Leonay. 78 members and former members gathered together to reminisce, and many stories were shared. The Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, now the Rural Fire Brigade, was raised at a meeting on 19 February in 1969. This was in response to the devastating fires of November/December 1968, a tragedy that engulfed one hundred houses and cost the lives of three people. There has followed fifty years of firefighting, not only in the Blue Mountains, but countless forays across New South Wales and interstate. The destructive fires in Canberra and the ACT also saw the brigade’s involvement. Other times saw them at the 2000/2001 fires across the Blue Mountains and other parts of the state and they also assisted in the 2013 Winmalee incident where over 200 homes were destroyed. As well as firefighting, like other Mountains brigades, Glenbrook/Lapstone has responded to many other emergencies.

This has involved events such as the floods in Bathurst and Nyngan in 1991. There were callouts to Wollongong in early 1999, where a storm had created havoc. At the end of 1999, the brigade had a record twenty-two-day commitment to Eastern Sydney, where a devastating hailstorm had caused considerable damage, helping with the clean-up. There has been a great deal of involvement in search and rescue incidents, where people have been lost or need recovery after accidents. One of their early forays was to assist the police and ambulance in recovering a fallen climber from a canyon on Mt Hay at night. The area of Emu Plains and Leonay has featured in the brigade’s activities on frequent occasions. There have been several fires in the past behind the school in Emu Heights and on the land between Leonay and Lapstone Railway Station. Over the last 50 years, the brigade has had various changes. Not least of these has been the Rural Fire Service. It has brought about a huge change to the bushfire fighting movement. These changes are in many ways essential. The institution of training and equipment improvements has made the job much safer than in the past. Also, the recognition of time served is now part of an award system. “We will continue to serve our community, as in the past fifty years, to the best of our ability. We rely on the community to supply our members, many of whom come from not only the lower mountains but from those areas such as Penrith, Emu Plains and even further afield. All are welcome to join our ranks, where friendships ensue because of the camaraderie which is part of firefighting and supporting the community” said Glenbrook/Lapstone Rural Fire Brigade’s Bob Wittrien. Are You Interested in Beekeeping? The Nepean Beekeepers are a local club that maintain an apiary of honey bees at the Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School in Emu Plains. They use the apiary and associated beekeeping equipment to demonstrate and teach beekeeping to its members and interested people and provide forums and one-on-one opportunities for new beekeepers to seek advice from more experience beekeepers. Formed in 1978 with the first meetings held on a private property in Llandilo, they moved to their current location at the then Nepean High School, where Nepean Beekeepers shared the school’s apiary with their students who were learning beekeeping. The club currently has 85 members, with 400 interested people requesting their newsletter. They meet the second Sunday of the month, starting at 9:30am, at the Club Apiary at the Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School. The cost to join the Amateur Beekeepers Association of NSW is $40 per year and $20 per year to affiliate with the Nepean Beekeepers, with an optional $20 per year for public liability insurance covering beekeeping activities. Membership fees are paid through an online system via the ABA website at www.beekeepers.asn.au. The Nepean Beekeepers welcomes visitors, people thinking about the possibility of beekeeping, people who have decided to keep bees and want to know how to achieve this, new beekeepers and past beekeepers returning to the hobby. They also have a swarm patrol system, accessible through the ABA website where the general public can input their postcode, and this will give them contact details of a local beekeeper who may be able to remove the swarm. For information about the Amateur Beekeepers Association of NSW, visit https://www.beekeepers.asn.au/. You can also contact the Nepean Beekeepers Club Secretary by email at nepean.secretary@beekeepers.asn.au. U Nepean Beekeepers study the apiary | Image: Warwick Coghlan

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Why People who exercise may respond better to treatment (Part 1)! Working with so many patients over the years allows one a chance to observe different types of patients. One of the things this has highlighted for me is that more often than not people whose jobs involve exercise tend to have less painful muscles that respond sooner to remedial treatments than sedentary people. Sedentary people still respond, just less rapidly. Of course, exercise is one of many factors influencing response rate. Mental stress, or poor diet or drugs can alter tissue response rate, as can excessive-exercise or relative overexercise for people with poor fitness levels, all leading to poorer recovery. Nevertheless, sedentary people often respond a little more slowly. Why? One reason is tissue detox efficiency via lymphatics. Lymph vessels help remove tissue waste products via the liver & kidneys. However, they don’t have a heart to pump lymphatic fluid. Rather they rely on tiny muscles surrounding each lymph vessel which all contract in a coordinated way to pump lymph, and then on skeletal-muscle contractions from exercise to superboosts lymph flow. Being sedentary (low muscular activity) much reduces flow.

For example, at rest, 2/3 of leg lymph-flow comes from smooth-muscles lining lymph vessels, just 1/3 comes from incidental leg-muscle contractions. Studies show that a person when: 1. asleep, has very low ankle lymph flow, just 0.24 ml/hour. 2. standing increases ankle lymph flow 13 times. 3. fast walking, increases ankle lymph flow 15 times Contracting skeletal muscles (exercises) support tissue cleansing by pumping toxin laden lymph, newly made by tissue cells, along the lymphatic vessels and away from the tissues. People who don’t exercise regularly still produce a reasonable amount of metabolic tissue waste but don’t have the benefit of the wonderful flushing effects that continual muscle contraction and relaxation provides. So, their tissues tend to have much poorer waste & toxin removal. Many of these waste products irritate muscle and its nerve cells producing pain signals, sometimes even to light touch. This should make it easy to see why muscles with reduced daily waste & toxin removal may feel much more painful and have more trouble healing.
