Santa Claus is Coming to Town! Santa Claus is coming to town. In fact, he’s already arrived at 13 Dartmoor Circuit, Emu Heights. Pam and Colin Doust have spent the past three months preparing their display of Christmas collectables for the delight of all passers-by. The Dousts have travelled the world to build on a magnificent assemblage of Christmas ornamentation, including a Collector’s item Harley Davidson replica shop from San Francisco, and some very special items from the jolly man in the red suit – Santa’s World in Finland. What started as a bet with a neighbour 17 years ago, has turned into a grand-scale passion for all things Christmassy. Colin’s neighbour, who was the envy of the street with his computerised Christmas light display, bet that Colin and Pam couldn’t outdo his display. That neighbour has since moved on, which is probably a good thing, because he’d be hard pressed to keep up Continued pg 4 ... with the Dousts now.

upon us. I’m pleased to report that I have now officially started my Christmas shopping. Last month’s very successful Glenbrook Fair got me off to a good start. Here’s a Christmas confession - I have a beautiful living Christmas tree, that comes inside to be decorated each year, and then goes back out to the garden to continue growing for the following Christmas. I went down the back yard the other day (something I haven’t had much time for of late) to find that the poor ol’ tree has suffered neglect and is in no condition to come inside this year. So much for the ‘living’ Christmas tree! You’ll notice on page 12 that I have your Christmas cooking all sorted. Read through the paper and you might pick up some great gift ideas – eg. car wash, Nutrimetics, music lessons, massage vouchers (hint! Hint!) The Glenbrook Chamber of Commerce is holding a Glenbrook Shopping Night on Wednesday 12th to help you with your Christmas shopping – details on pg 14. This Christmas edition is packed with great stories about our talented locals. You can be a part of the news too. Drop me a line, or call me if you have any newsworthy stories for next year. I’ll take this opportunity to wish all our readers a wonderful Christmas, and a safe and healthy New Year. See you in the letterboxes in February – we’re having a well deserved holiday in January!

Santa Claus is Coming to Town Continued from pg 1... Pam takes delight in decorating her house from inside to out. The front room is full to bursting with the most amazing assortment of Santas, angels, trees, bears, and even a very Australiana nativity scene. She encourages Christmas sightseers to come up the spectacularly lit front path to peer in at the collection through the big front windows. Colin has an entire Christmas village set up around two large train tracks in the garage, where visitors can come and have a glimpse at the magical mini Christmas land. Although their power bill is a bit higher each December, Pam says it’s worth it to see such expressions of sheer delight on the children who come to visit the display. Pam loves to decorate the house for her own grandchildren, but takes even greater delight in sharing the gift of Christmas joy to the entire neighbourhood. That’s the Christmas spirit! So while you’re on the Christmas light drive around Emu Plains, make sure you stop in at Dartmoor Circuit. Also take a drive down Emerald St and Forbes St, Emu Plains for other not-to-be-missed spectacular displays.

A Young Lady of Talent Five years ago, Briony Lewis was on the other side of the world. This November she made her mark in the Blue Mountains, when she appeared in The Glenbrook Player’s latest offering, Terry Pratchett’s Carpe Jugulum. At the tender age of 13 she is, however, not the youngest member of the cast which incorporated seasoned performers and newcomers alike. That honour went to Ciara Sheehy, who delighted audiences with her portrayal of Scraps the dog. Briony’s role however, was a much darker one. As Lacrimosa, the daughter of the dastardly Count de Magpyre, she terrified and bit her way through a hysterical plot which blended Vampires, Witches and mayhem. Adapted from the book of the same name, Carpe Jugulum is set on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld which holds a mirror up to our own Roundworld in funny, engaging and sometimes not too flattering ways. Briony has had a long time association with Discworld. She first encountered its author at a UK fan convention, before she was even born. Last year saw Briony take on a role as a committee member for the 2011 Australian Discworld Convention held at Penrith Panthers. So portraying a Discworld character comes as nothing new to Briony. This is Briony’s first play with The Glenbrook Players and she loved every minute of it. Having previously appeared in Blue Mountains Musical Societies Oliver in 2010 and Blaxland High Schoo’s recent Titanic The Musical, she is looking forward to taking her acting career on further. Briony, who lives in Emu Plains, is currently enrolled with the Q Theatre Company drama training programme in Penrith.

Born for the Stage 19 year old Ben Roorda of Springwood came home from his first drama class at age 11 and said, with great enthusiasm, “Mum, there are other people like me!” He had discovered a world of extreme extroverts and entertainers – just like him. From that moment, Ben’s single life goal has become to entertain. He looks back on his first role as Trenton the Nerd with a kind of incredulity – the sheer joy of making a room full of people laugh became like a drug. He was hooked. Thus, a career on stage was born. 32 productions later, Ben has landed a role (or two) in Emu Heights Productions’ interpretation of Hamlet. This has been his first non-comedic role and Ben has relished the challenge, saying, “It’s good to do a role out of my comfort zone, to expand my skill set. It has taught me how to act with a bit of truth. There is a lot of in depth character work, which has been really interesting.” Ben plays the characters of Osrick and Guildenstern, and, for a Shakespearian tragedy, he has successfully imbued his characters with quirky and highly entertaining style. Director of Emu Heights Productions Inc., Ian Zammit, started his company with the goal of making top quality theatre accessible to people in the Western Sydney region. He has chosen the best quality performers, designers and technicians in order to give his audience the best possible experience. With this production of Hamlet, he has certainly succeeded. I have to say it was by far the most entertaining interpretation of Hamlet I’ve ever seen. This was the company’s fourth production and Ian is striving to make every future project bigger and better. Ian’s adaptation of Hamlet was heavily influenced by his love of film noir, and in particular “The Maltese Falcon”. He cut the script to 2 hours (this editor has been known to sleep through
Springwood actor Ben Roorda staring in Hamlet
an exceedingly boring 4-hour version once!), and tightened the story to focus on a murder mystery. Ian has succeeded in bringing new life to what many high school students could regard as droll old Shakespeare. An impressive highlight was the final scene swordfight. Ian utilised the services of “Swordplay” – a professional theatrical fencing and stage combat troupe based in Campbelltown, to teach the cast the finer points of stage combat. The result being a highly entertaining and convincing encounter. Keep your eye out for the next not-to-be-missed production from Ian Zammit and Emu Heights Productions.

Professor Robert Lee christens McCarthy students’ trebuchet . (Below) - the gruemse heads
Prepare ye battlements! Tarry not lest thou mayest come to thine sticky end! A very sticky end indeed for some of the McCarthy students sitting too close to the re-enactment of history. McCarthy Catholic College Experimental Archaeology Club has constructed a replica of a medieval trebuchet. Original trebuchets could hurl massive boulders at castle walls but, to the relief of Principal Ms Robyn Meadows, the McCarthy trebuchet (standing 2 metres high) was aimed at a target in the middle of the oval rather than at the school buildings! Professor Robert Lee, Head of History at UWS, attended the historical re-enactment and had the dubious honour of the first firing. McCarthy Year 7 students comprised a medieval mung (crowd) of lords, ladies, serfs, wenches, bellibones (pretty girls), poplollys (little darlings), killbucks (fierce looking fellows) and killcows (swashbucklers). Local ADF cadet representative and year 10 student, Sergeant Paul Blackman addressed the mung, discussing modern day warfare. His attempt at launching a ‘missile’ led the crowd to believe that he should stick with his modern-day weapons! Students exhibited incredible ingenuity and creativity in making papier-mache heads, painting gruesome faces, then filling the insides with cooked spaghetti and tomato sauce. As Professor Lee catapulted the first head into the air, a spray
of “blood and guts” barely missed the mung. No-one had managed to hit the target until Ms Meadows stepped up to fire the last remaining head. She was thereafter branded a hufty-tufty (braggart) when she managed to score the only hit of the day. McCarthy Catholic College Experimental Archaeology Club has embarked on some very ambitious projects this year. In term 1, the students learned all about trench warfare by creating a trench on the school oval. In term 2, they attempted to mummify a bunch of rats (with mixed success as evidenced by the stench in the classroom!) Coordinator of the Experimental Archeology Club, Owen Laffin, has high praise for the students. It is an extra-curricular activity for the students, but the club has a steady following and Mr Laffin has noted significant improvements in levels of engagement from this kinesthetic approach to learning. The hands on approach gives the students the impetus to learn more. Thine editor looks forward to next year’s piece de resistance – a Trojan horse. Now that’ll be something worth waiting for!

A QUESTION OF HEALTH
with Michelle Beech
Candida – Do you have it?
Many people suffer in silence with a variety of symptoms that may indicate they have Candida. At this time of the year, lifestyle and diet may exacerbate the presence of Candida because of the Summer heat, the wrong sort of foods, high alcohol consumption, not much sleep and lack of awareness and self-care. Symptoms may include: • Fungal skin infections like Jock itch, ring worm or athletes foot • Frequent vaginal yeast infections, persistent vaginal itching • Rectal itching, symptoms worse after high sugar foods • White coated tongue / oral thrush / dry mouth / bad breath • Food and chemical sensitivities, allergy symptoms, symptoms worse after waking • Feelings of anxiety, panic attacks, feeling “blue”, obsessive behaviours • Hyperactivity, attention problems (Candida is not the cause of ADHD – but it can exaccerbate it) • Brain fog, poor concentration, feeling ‘spacey’, poor memory, headaches • Irregular bowels; diarrhoea or constipation or diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome • Chronic flatulence and abdominal cramps alleviated by bowel movements • Heartburn / Indigestion • Extreme lethargy, fatigue, eye fatigue, spots in front of eyes, burning or tearing eyes • Frequent ear infections, pressure, swelling or tingling in ears • Irritability, mood swings • Dandruff, dry itchy skin, acne or other skin problems • Frequent urination • Irregular menstruation, endometriosis, PMS, low libido • Numbness, burning or tingling sensations • Inflammation of the hair follicles (candidiasis folliculitis) of parts of the body (feet, legs, arms) • Muscle weakness and pain or joint swelling and aches • Sinus problems, post nasal drip, swollen lips/face, fungal sinusitis General preventative tips Kick the sugar habit. Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates where possible: in excess, they suppress the immune system and provide food for yeast-overgrowth. Opt for nutrient-rich whole grains and cereals instead. Minimise the consumption of yeast and alcohol. Choose natural fibres. Cotton clothing and underwear decrease humidity in the genital area and help prevent yeast from thriving. Make sure you wash cotton underwear in hot water; swimwear should be hung out to dry in the sun. Avoid irritants which include deodorants, soaps, chemicals, sprays and douches. These irritants can alter the vaginal

environment. Try to choose sanitary items and toilet papers that are not deodorised and don’t have fragrance. Decrease the spread. Wipe from front to back when going to the toilet, as this may help to prevent Candida albicans from spreading from the anus to the vagina. Maintain good hygiene with regular showers or baths. Hit the hay. A lack of sleep may impair the immune system. The average adult needs 7-9 hours per night. Bust stress. Anxiety, tension and low mood can release “stress hormones” from the adrenal glands. These stress hormones, called corticosteroids, suppress the immune system, leaving us more susceptible to infection. Keep it colourful. Choose foods that are vibrant in colour, including a variety of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables. This will provide a range of minerals and vitamins that strengthen the immune system. Natural medicine solutions Probiotics. Supplementation with good quality probiotics has been shown to increase colonisation of “good” bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract and the vagina, helping to prevent the overgrowth of Candida albicans. Many herbal medicines have anti-fungal properties. Echinacea is helpful for any overgrowth of “bad” bugs and is good for the immune system. Other powerful anti-fungal herbs include Pau Dárco, Golden seal, Oregon grape and Barberry. With a track-record of successful treatment protocols, comprehensive case-taking, herbal and nutritional medicines and individualised lifestyle recommendations, Michelle Beech would love to assist you with your health concerns now and into 2013. YOU CAN DANCE Celebrates Success! YOU CAN DANCE Performing Arts School celebrates their success at the recent Australian All Star Cheer Federation’s (AASCF) National Cheer And Dance Competition. This competition is the biggest Cheerleading and Dance in Australia - this year over 4400 competitors and over 400 clubs were involved from all over Australia and YOU CAN DANCE from Emu Plains had amazing success and I think my students (over 100 of my students were involved in the competition) deserve recognition from the wider community for their achievements - as it was truly remarkable! YOU CAN DANCE entered students in Jazz, Hip Hop, Cheer Stunt groups & Cheerleading team events at Nationals in Homebush at the end of October. YOU CAN DANCE were crowned National Champions in Junior Stunt group (level 1); Junior stunt group (level 2); Senior cheer (level 1), Junior Hip Hop and Senior Hip Hop dance sections! They also received 3 second places, 6 third places and top 4 for every other section entered – an amazing result given the magnitude of this competition!! Senior hip and senior cheer groups were an amazing 1.1 & 1.3 points
off gaining highest overall score across the whole competition. The junior stunt (level 2) team received the 2nd highest score overall! YOU CAN DANCE has had an outstanding year of competition with their boys hip hop team being crowned NSW state champions, and their Junior Cheer (level 1) squad not only crowned state champions but NSW STATE GRAND CHAMPIONS with the highest score across the whole competition at NSW States in September. YOU CAN DANCE have also scored numerous 1st placings and top 3 results in their jazz, hip hop and cheer groups across the competition season- incredible results for the school based in local Emu Plains, especially given it is only their 2nd year of competition! “I am beyond thrilled with our results this year - AASCF Nationals is the biggest and best cheer and dance competition in Australia and for our students to have gained such results was exceptional and proves we are on the right track with our training! We have amazing staff, talented and motivated students, a great cheer and dance program in our school as well as a brilliant support base in our parents,”
studio owner Jane Houlihan said. “What was most pleasing at Nationals last weekend, was not only did our students and our supporters cheer for students from our school, they cheered for everyone else and were the ultimate in good sportsmanship. I am so very proud of everyone’s hard work this year - it has been an amazing journey with outstanding results - considering its only our second year of competing - to walk away with so many national champion titles is nothing short of exceptional! “The sport of Cheerleading grows bigger and better every year, it was wonderful to see YOU CAN DANCE receive exceptional results in both cheer and dance across the competition - a real pat on the back given the standard of competition across the weekend! It’s a very exciting time for our school!” YOU CAN DANCE will be having an open week of FREE classes for anyone wishing to come along try some classes out between December 10th and 14th - please call 0416 213 816 to register your interest and to receive a timetable. YOU CAN DANCE will be taking new enrolments in January. Join in the fun YOU CAN DANCE offers - its an amazing studio with nurturing teachers, a professional studio environment, excellent facilities, caring families and beautiful talented students - there is something for absolutely EVERYONE at YOU CAN DANCE and all are welcomed! Students aged 2 years and up can enrol.
Everything in Moderation Christmas seems to be all about excess – but there is not much enjoyment in feeling the size of a padded Santa suit or as stuffed as the festive turkey! The best advice is moderation – apply it to everything you eat and drink. Drink moderate amounts of alcohol and try to alternate soft drinks or water with alcoholic ones. As for food, have a bit of what you fancy but try not to stuff your face if you can help it!

CHRISTMAS COOKING To make your Christmas cooking easier, I’ve already sorted out your Christmas dinner! Here is a totally scrumptious turkey recipe, guaranteed to please your guests on Christmas day, and it’s gluten-free! And for afters, try these sensational Christmas brownies- not gluten-free, however you can simply substitute the flour with G-free flour, and you won’t know the difference.
Roast Lemon & Oregano Turkey • Serves 8-10 • Preparation 20 mins • Cooking 2 ½ hours
Ingredients 1 whole turkey approx 4kg 100g butter, at room temperature 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp lemon zest 1 Tbsp dried oregano 2 small lemons, halved 1Tbsp olive oil Stuffing 2 cups cooked brown rice ½ cup currants 100g pistachios, toasted & chopped 2 tsp orange rind, finely grated 200 g dark cooking chocolate, melted 1 egg, lightly beaten Method 1. Preheat oven to 180ºC (160ºC fan forced). Rinse turkey (including cavity) under cold running water and pat dry with paper towel. 2. Combine butter, garlic, lemon zest and oregano. Using fingers, gently loosen skin from breast meat and push butter mixture under skin. 3. Make stuffing by combining rice, currants, pistachios and egg, and season well. 4. Fill cavity with the rice stuffing and then 2 lemon halves. Secure the cavity with a skewer and tie the legs with kitchen string. 5. Place on a rack in a roasting pan, brush with oil and squeeze remaining lemon over turkey. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour. 6 Remove foil and bake for another 1hr, 20 mins, or until juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of the turkey. Rest for 10m ins before carving.

White Chocolate, Cherry & Almond Brownies • Serves 18 • Preparation 20 mins • Cooking 50 mins
Ingredients 1 x 200g pkt white cooking chocolate, coarsely chopped 125g butter 2 x 100g pkts red glace cherries, halved 190g (11/4 cups) plain flour 215g (1 cup) caster sugar 2 eggs, lightly whisked 70g flaked almonds Method 1. Preheat oven to 160°C. Line a 16 x 26cm (base measurement) slab pan with non-stick baking paper, allowing sides to overhang. 2. Place chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water (make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water). Stir with a metal spoon until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Set aside to cool slightly. 3. Stir the glace cherries, flour, sugar and egg into the chocolate mixture until well combined. Spoon into the prepared pan. Use the back of a spoon to smooth the surface. Sprinkle with the almonds. 4. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Set aside in the pan to cool completely. 5. Cut the brownie into squares. Enjoy!

The nineteen qualifiers for “Last Man Standing” prior to hit-off on Sunday November 4 - photo courtesy of Noel Rowsell (www.photoexcellence.com.au) (L to R): Gareth Pinn, Grant Kells, Scott Mawson, John Liddell, Paul Latimer, Les Alexander, Brett Campbell, Steve Hardy, Nad Pillay, Brian Doyle, Ron Lammey, Mark McClean, Bob Coates, John Malvern (runner-up), Matt Norman, Paul Gibbs (winner), Ron Beadman, Mick Denny, Ian Barnes
Last Man Standing Nineteen members of Leonay Golf Club lined up on Sunday November 4 to contest the Annual ‘Last Man Standing’ competition. Each player qualified through regular competition rounds, in either Stableford, Par or Stroke events, which began in June and ended in September. At the end of that four-month period, the nineteen players with the highest points score from a single round qualified for “Last Man Standing” - one of the more irregular events on the calendar at the Leonay Golf Club. All nineteen players hit off the first hole on Sunday, in the same group, with the lowest point-scorer on the hole subsequently being eliminated. That scenario played out over the ensuing sixteen holes, leaving the eventual winner Paul Gibbs and runner-up John Malvern to tee off on the 18th hole, with one of them guaranteed to win the hole and become 2012’s Last Man Standing. Nerves played a huge part on the day, with the prize pool
of over $1,600 enough to send a tremor through the steadiest of hands, whether they be C-Grade, B-Grade or even A-Grade players. Veteran Gibbs showed the steadiest hands (or best handicap) on the day, maintaining his nerve to narrowly defeat Malvern on the final sudden-death hole to claim the major prize of $500. The Club Championships were also run during October, with clear winners in all four categories. A GRADE: Scratch Winner - Ben McArdle 285; Runner-Up Chris Blakeley 289; Nett - Scott Chambers 258 B GRADE: Scratch Winner - Cameron Balgowan 315; Runner-Up Ken Gordon 324; Nett - Martin McDaid 257 C GRADE: Scratch Winner - John Liddell 339; Runner-Up - Chris Holden 347; Nett - Gary Scorer 256 VETERAN: Scratch Winner - Laurie Cupples 271; Nett - Gary Scorer 256 Members, Open and Invitation events can all be viewed in the Calendar on the Leonay Golf Club website ... www.leonaygolfclub.com.au

Boost Your Musical Talents with a Scholarship Penrith Mayor Mark Davies today announced that applications were open for an annual music scholarship, which encourages the pursuit of music education for students whose families live in public housing. Councillor Davies said that the Penrith City Youth Music Scholarship program, first awarded in 2007, was developed as a partnership between Housing NSW, Penrith City Council and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre (JSPAC). “The annual scholarships are for one year’s duration to provide tutoring in either a musical instrument or voice,” Councillor Davies said. “As well as receiving free tuition once a week for a year at The Joan, the recipients will also participate in other teaching programs at the centre and have the opportunity to perform with other students.” The scholarship is specifically intended for students from families who currently live in public housing in Penrith City. Students must be enrolled in years 7 to 11 in 2013 and excel or have the potential to excel in a musical instrument or voice. The JSPAC through the Penrith Conservatorium of Music has been offering high quality music education programs across Western Sydney for more than 20 years. The music scholarship gives the student a chance to access professional musical tuition and encourages gifted and talented musicians to extend their music knowledge and skills. Applications close on 14 December and can be downloaded from Council’s website www.penrithcity.nsw. gov.au, or phone Council on 4732 7831 or email sgorst@penrithcity.nsw.gov.au.
