Big Questions, Significant Answers It has been a difficult few months. The fires across the country have been unprecedented, and the effects of drought compounding. We hear stories of lives lost through natural disasters in New Zealand, and beyond. These add to those challenges we may face in our own homes, like sickness, cancer, as well as financial and relationship stress. And they raise big questions for us. In fact, in my experience, we long to have these questions answered more in such times than when things are going well. Who am I? What is my place in the world? Who is God? and Why doesn’t He do something about this? They’re good questions and deserve significant answers. Even though our suffering can be very hard, it may lead us to seek these answers. Again, in my experience, I often meet people at church for the first time in the midst of difficult circumstances. I may not even know it at the time, but they’re searching for significant answers. Their child has been gravely ill, or their spouse is sick with cancer, or they long to be known more deeply. And there are answers! God has spoken from outside his creation. He has spoken lovingly and extensively. He has spoken fully and finally by His coming into the world as Jesus, the Son. But the answers to such big questions take time to listen to, and to explain, and to reflect on. Would we expect anything less for such significant questions? It does take time, and in my opinion a bible believing church is the best place to find these answers. It can’t happen in one visit, but if one visit shows signs of promise, give it the time it needs. You’d be very welcome at our church. After all, Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

The start of a new year also brings with it the excitement of starting school for the very first time for thousands of students across the country. Five-year-old Lennie Nix is one of those students and she can’t wait to start kindergarten at Emu Heights Public School this month. Lennie will be joining her seven-year-old brother Harvey at the school this year and she’s already looking forward to having Crunch and Sip and playing the big Connect 4 in the playground with her friends! “This year will be very emotional when Lennie starts school, being our last child and realising that we won’t have our little girl at home anymore. Losing our girl’s day on Wednesdays will be very sad for me. I know she’ll thrive and is completely ready for big school, but knowing I will no longer have my side kick, I’ll feel a little lost” explained Jade Nix, Lennie’s Mum. She has attended both a preschool and daycare centre locally in the past 12 months in preparation for big school. “Watching her confidence, independence and knowledge build has been wonderful to see” added Jade. Lennie has already been asked the big question about what she wants to be when she finishes school and answered with a big smile, “I want to be a kid’s doctor because I want to fix people’s broken legs”. “We love Emu Heights and it’s little community. Our evening walks always involve saying hi to fellow students who live nearby or stopping to pat another person’s dog. Living so close to our school allows both kids to ride their scooters there and sometimes stop at the park for a play. Hearing the children play in the playground during lunchtime or the end of break bell always make our hearts warm” ended Jade and Tim Nix, Lennie’s parents. r Feature Article: [Cover] All smiles as her school journey begins [Above] Lennie and big brother Harvey | Image: Jade Nix

From Emu Plains to the World Stage Emu Plains may be over 16,000 kilometres away from London, but it’s where a life of sport began for Tulsen Tollett, former professional sports athlete and now successful broadcast journalist for BBC World News. Tollett, who played rugby league for the Penrith Panthers in the NRL and the London Broncos in the English Super League, moved directly onto broadcasting in 2002 after hanging up the boots. He has been at BBC World News since 2012, where he predominantly works as a presenter in the studio, whilst also reporting on site and various events. “There are many similarities from being a professional athlete, in comparison to my current role, with tenacity being the main one. As a player, not everything will go your way each week and you have to accept that and get back to the task the following week at training leading into the next game. In broadcasting, you may have to work extremely hard to try and set up an interview with someone and at times it may not work out” he explained to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Tulsen’s decorated career as a broadcast journalist have allowed him to work on two Rugby League World Cups, four Rugby Union World Cups (the most recent being in Japan last year), three Para Athletics World Championships, NBA and Major League Baseball games. “The Major League Baseball World Series between the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros in October just gone was a highlight. All seven games were won by the away side and after the first six it was the first time in 1,420 best of seven series in Baseball, Ice Hockey or Basketball in North American sport that it had ever happened. Then, to be there for the 7th game in Texas along with the preceding fixtures in either Houston or Washington DC was something which will surely never happen again, at least in my lifetime” Tollett beamed. Reflecting on his childhood, he has fond memories of living in the area, “I was extremely lucky when I grew up at the bottom of the Blue Mountains and looking back it was a carefree lifestyle. There were no such things as tablets and smart phones, and we spent long days out playing and testing ourselves at a variety of sports including rugby league, cricket, little athletics and golf. I had supportive parents who ferried myself and my three siblings around to our various sports and allowed us to pursue our dreams and I couldn’t have asked for more”.

Ever since I can remember, I have had a love for radio. As a child I used to dream of sitting in a studio and conducting my own program. I would regularly go, as part of the audience, to watch shows being recorded seeing many of the stars of yesterday. Eventually my dream was realised and I was given the opportunity to move to the country to work on the local station. That love has remained, and over the years I have stayed with radio both commercial and our local community station. I have been fascinated since the advent of the internet and the many opportunities offered via that medium. A big part of the internet is music and generally people are turning to the internet for their music entertainment. Whist there are quite a few internet stations operating, these aim their music at the younger audience. I felt that there was a hole to be filled, so Reminiscing Music was put together to fill that void. It offers listeners the music that they grew up with and the music they love. If you love the music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as much as I do and you enjoy different music styles (Rock, Standards, Country, Jazz etc), try reminiscingmusic.com. Confidence to Thrive and Excel St Paul’s Grammar School is proud of the recent achievements of our Year 12, 2019 students who have demonstrated such a motivated commitment to their studies. Senior students at St Paul’s study either the Higher School Certificate or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme – choosing the credential that best suits their skills and interests. Combining our 2019 results, 49% of students achieved an ATAR above 80 and 18% achieved an ATAR above 90, with strong results recorded across a broad range of subjects. We believe the foundation for our students’ ongoing achievement year after year is our commitment to developing and educating the whole child. St Paul’s offers extensive cocurricular activities that help students grow academically, physically, emotionally and spiritually within a safe and supportive environment - giving them the confidence to thrive and excel. This is aided by the many benefits students receive from attending a school that features beautiful, expansive grounds with excellent teaching, learning and sporting facilities. This is St Paul’s - and we have bold plans for the future. As a consequence of continued growth and our desire to ensure the provision of quality learning facilities, we have developed an ambitious campus-wide Master Plan. Delivering Stage 1 of this plan will see the construction of an Innovation Learning Centre, housing state-of-the-art STEM facilities, Mathematics learning spaces, a modern library, lecture theatre and more. This is an exciting development of great benefit to our school community and all future students. Much like the school itself, there is no doubt that each member of the St Paul’s class of 2019 is ready to forge ahead into the future with the will and skills to succeed and the capacity to make a positive and lasting impact wherever their journey takes them.

Council Calls On Community For Regatta Park Design
Have You Given Any Thought To Your Parenting Goals This Year? We set personal goals and work goals. We watch lifestyle shows on the television or scan social media to get ideas about how we want to make changes to our home and garden. We make holiday plans. How often do we take stock of what is happening within our family? What is going well? What could we do better? What are our family’s values and how do we communicate and role model our values to and for our children? With parenting we often fall into autopilot mode. We fall into familiar ways of interacting and behaving. Humans are social and emotional beings. The foundation for our health and wellbeing is connection and belonging. Family can provide the most important and satisfying relationships that we will ever experience, or the most damaging. The difference between establishing and maintaining constructive or destructive relational patterns is intention and reflection. Intention is staying focused on what we want to achieve. Reflection is thinking about what went well and what we could do better next time. This can be such hard work but it can be achieved with small and consistent change. The effort requires kindness – with yourself and others. Kind enough to allow for mistakes and to learn from them. It also requires bravery – being brave enough to try again and keep going. Kindness and bravery go hand in hand. I recently came across the concept of ‘Ubuntu’ which is a Southern African word meaning “I am because we are”. That rings true for our children and for ourselves. In a TEDX talk by Dozie Okeleke (https://youtube/vBUy7XmbB7M) he quotes an African saying “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. And so it goes when we are interacting with our children. For example, if we are nagging or yelling at our child, and the child becomes belligerent, we may get frustrated with the child’s behaviour. Reflecting on this situation – what do we want to achieve and what is the most effective way to manage it that honours the people involved and the family as a whole? What have your child and you learnt from the experience? We are all a work in progress.
Emu Plains Lions Give Water
The Lions Club of Emu Plains are one of the Lions Clubs all over Australia, who are giving families and the elderly, a water tank to assist in re-starting their lives, after drought and bushfires. This project was started by the Lions Club International Foundation, with a $150,000 grant to purchase 50 tanks. Each tank costs $3,000 and holds 27,000 litres and comes complete with tank, pumps and installed with that most precious commodity… WATER. Emu Plains Lions set about raising the required funds for a tank by running the BBQ at Bunnings North Penrith on Sunday 19 January. Together with donations from a bucket-drop at the same time and location, they hoped to yield the $3,000. The Club will add any necessary shortfall, from its’ reserves, to achieve the balance required to complete the project. If you are a business or an individual, and would like to help, please contact Club Treasurer, Cheryl Devine on 0417 234295.

Penrith City Council is calling on the local community to have their say on the design of the playground as part of the $24 million enhancement of Regatta Park. Council is calling on Penrith residents to tell us what they would like to see included in the new playground through the Your Say Penrith online portal before 21 February 2020. The preliminary design shows how Council will transform the current site into a beautiful open space that will bring extensive benefits to residents and visitors to Penrith through the delivery of a large green recreational space with improved access to the Nepean River for the community to enjoy. The project is jointly funded with $15 million from the NSW and Australian Governments as part of the Western Sydney City Deal’s Livability Program and $9 million from Council. The enhanced Regatta Park will feature an outdoor fitness park, picnic spaces, river terraces and a large playground for children with expansive views of the Nepean River. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the park enhancements were identified during extensive community consultation on the Our River Masterplan in 2013, and Council is asking the community to have their say on the playground that is included in the design. “Council has been working for many years to enhance Regatta Park after the community told us that they wanted an enhanced, green recreational space close to the river during an extensive consultation process on the Our River Masterplan,” Councillor Fowler said. “The Masterplan seeks to improve views and access to the river as well as the health and amenity of the surrounding area, with the upgrade of Regatta Park into a large, flexible, multipurpose space being a critical element. “The NSW and Australian Governments have recognized the value of this project through their generous support of the Liveability Program, so I am pleased that we are able to invite the community along on the journey of enhancing this aspirational community space. “Council appreciates that a citizen-led approach to design of major recreational projects leads to better outcomes for the community, so we are encouraging everyone in Penrith to have a look at the preliminary design and have their say on what they want to see included in the playground. “It is pleasing to see the Our River Masterplan come to fruition through this project and reaffirms our Nepean River as a defining feature of our city.” Cr Fowler said that the development of Regatta Park coincides with a number of other major projects in Penrith, including the recently announced $12 million City Park, the design of which is also being informed by community consultation. Go to yoursaypenrith.com.au to comment on the Regatta Park design before 21 February 2020 and tell us what you would like to see in the playground. r A $24 million upgrade will transform Regatta Park into an activated destination for events, recreation and leisure | Image: Penrith City Council

Headaches! Could It Be Your Muscles - Muscling-In On Your Happy Life Headache is the most common cause of neurological consultation for doctors, most being ‘primary headache’, i.e. not the result of another medical condition such as a tumour or aneurism. Correctly diagnosing headache cause is vital, it might be a ‘red-flag’ to a rare underlying condition that may be serious & possibly life-threatening. E.g. headaches with: 1. Sudden onset, severe (thunderclap) headaches could signal a. intracranial haemorrhage, b. vertebral artery dissection, c. cerebral venous thrombosis d. reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome 2. stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, recent onset of confusion, altered consciousness, fever raises concerns of infection. 3. sensory changes, weakness, double vision or visual field defects also need investigation 4. enlarged blind spot suggests papilledema / raised intracranial pressure 5. worse for coughing, straining, sneezing may signal raised intracranial pressure 6. worse for eye movement and/or impaired vision may suggest inflammation of the optic nerve Most people get primary headaches: 1. Tension-type, 2. migraine, 3. cluster headaches.
38% of the population suffer tension headaches, 10% migraines and <1% cluster headaches, and almost all migraine suffers also have tension headaches. A Danish study found risk factors for: 1. migraine were familial disposition, no vocational education, a high work load, frequent tension-type headache. 2. tension-type headache, were poor self-rated health, inability to relax after work, sleeping few hours per night. Many of these risk factors may lead directly to increased stress levels, which can affect muscles. Neurologist Egilius Spierings, states ‘Tension headache is thought to be caused by a lack of sleep, stress, hunger, thirst, eye strain or’ head neck and shoulder muscle strain, ‘usually due to bad posture - think sitting at your desk all day’, while migraine ‘occurs when blood vessels in the head dilate’, but ‘just as with tension headache, stress on the muscles in the neck, jaw and shoulders may also play a role’. Given this you’d be surprised that Spierings says ‘in the headache world, …no attention being paid to muscles’, as headache prevention or treatment generally focused on ‘pharmacological intervention’. Experience shows remedial work to neck & shoulder muscles provides considerable benefit for primary headaches. If you need help call us at the clinic.

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check by a veterinarian to ensure they are healthy. They have had their first vaccination, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 4 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. Female, ginger short hair, born 9.11.19, approx. 12 weeks of age. Male, black short hair, born 9.11.19, approx. 12 weeks of age. Male, white and tabby short hair, born 5.10.19, approx. 16 weeks of age. Male, tabby and white short hair, born 5.10.19, approx. 16 weeks of age. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious kitten diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. A lunar rainbow is formed when water droplets in the earth’s atmosphere refract and reflect the moon’s white light. As moonlight is dimmer than sunlight, and our eyes need light to see colour, the lunar rainbow appears as a glowing pale arc – a ghostly version of its daylight cousin.

THE LAST WORD FROM THE EDITOR
Well, what a tough few months it has been. You don't need me to tell you about the devastation these fires have caused for families and business owners, or the health implications faced by many with existing respiratory or other health concerns. What is worth highlighting is the heroic efforts of all of our wonderful emergency services workers, many of whom worked tirelessly for days, weeks and months to help provide the best outcome for our friends, neighbours and communities. As we face 2020, somewhat with a degree of uncertainty about our future climate and landscape, one thing we know for sure is that our community spirit is 100% alive. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by the strength and support of this amazing community that we each call home. We're glad to be back at the tip of 2020 with another year full of inspiring local stories and accomplishments, supporting local businesses and delivering directly to your door! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Your speed does not matter. Forward is forward!'.
Belinda
