Does your doctor send you to have a set of blood tests each year? Apparently, I’ve got to the age where I should expect this, and I can assure you, or at least I’ll plead with you, ‘I’m not that old’. We expect to have regular health checks. They can tell if something’s wrong, or on the way to going wrong. Prevention is better than cure! But what about your spiritual health, how do you know what shape you’re in there? I guess, like the doctor, you’ve got to know what to measure too. Iron levels low? Cholesterol high? Well, the God of the Bible gives us this spiritual measure – ‘Where are you at in a relationship with Jesus?’. But what the answer means, and how to make sense of it needs some insight, just like the doctor with your iron, or cholesterol. But one of my favourite verses of the Bible can help us here. It says, ‘If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, you will be saved’ (Romans 10:9). In those words, it reveals that without intervention we’re spiritually unwell, and need to be saved. It reveals Jesus’ rising from death gives him spiritual authority, as Lord. And it reveals that we can be made well, by our response to Jesus, and trusting him as Lord. I guess that’s a spiritual health check you can do at home. There’s much more can be said, but it’s a start. If you’d like to know more, join us online at Church with a Difference, at www. epac.org.au r Image: www.pixabay.com

Penrith Council is set to invest millions towards shade provisions for 90 playspaces within the City. The three-year program, which commenced last month, will see Council upgrade 90 playspaces with trees and other shade structures. The first playspaces to receive shade structures include Lowery Close Reserve - John Whitton Memorial, Gough and Lucas Street Reserve and Annett Street Reserve in Emu Plains as well as Pamela Parade Reserve in Leonay. The playspace in Bunyarra Reserve in Emu Plains is getting an upgrade with the addition of new play equipment, additional bench seating and picnic facilities, as well as shade sails over the playspace. Outlook Avenue in Emu Heights is set to receive a completely new playspace which includes new play equipment, a shade sail over the playspace, an accessible pathway, picnic table and shelter. Construction for both is expected to be completed by September 2020. The program forms part of a shade assessment that was completed in 2019 as part of Council’s Shade Facilities at Playspaces Policy. The assessment noted 90 playspaces that required additional shade to enhance the experience for adults and children using the space while beating the heat during our summer months. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said playgrounds are at the heart of our neighbourhoods and should be accessible for everyone, all year round. “With sun protection and UV radiation a major concern in Australia, we’re proud to have taken this important step in providing extra sun protection for our community” Cr Fowler said. The shade structure works will take place on a rolling schedule and during normal business hours between Monday to Friday. Residents will still be able to use the playspaces on weekends and public holidays. The shade materials meet Australian Standards, provide specified UV blockout ratings between 97-99%, minimise heat conduction and allow appropriate airflow. The tree planting program will be delivered during times of optimal growing conditions throughout the three-year period. Not only will they provide a long-term shade solution, the trees will deliver additional benefits including biodiversity, habitat, and reduced noise pollution. The project is part of Council’s Cooling the City strategy, designed to improve the liveability of our City and help us beat the heat. r Cr Mark Davies and Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM at a new shade structure | Image: Penrith City Council

Ready, Set, Go - Gyms and Kids Sport Returns Gymnasiums, yoga, indoor pools, and dance studios have now reopened, and kids’ sport can resume across NSW from 1 July, as more COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Deputy Premier John Barilaro has thanked the community for its patience while the Government works through its COVID-19 recovery plan that is built around health advice. “I’m proud of this State for following the health advice and flattening the curve to such a point, where we can now re-introduce kids’ sports and open gyms” Mr Barilaro said. “Sport and exercise boosts morale and this is exactly what NSW needs right now.” From 13 June last month, the following were allowed: • Fitness, gymnasiums, pilates, yoga and dance studios reopened with up to 10 people per class and 100 people in an indoor venue; • Community centres, including their recreational facilities reopened; • Some indoor recreational facilities including pools and saunas reopened with restricted numbers; The four square metre rule must also be applied at all times. Community sport competitions can restart for those aged 18 years and under from 1 July. Health Minister Brad Hazzard said COVID-19 safety plans for each activity or sport are critical to enable this re-start. “Sport and businesses will need to do things a little differently than in pre-COVID-19 times and following their safety plan is key to keeping people safe” Mr Hazzard said. “Re-opening kids’ sporting competitions on 1 July gives groups and local government which manages many of these facilities, time to work through all the new changes”. Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee said indoor and outdoor community sports for those aged 18 years and under are ready to return from 1 July. “Children and young people will be thrilled they can get together with friends and teammates again and I am sure parents will welcome the news too” Mr Lee said. “NSW loves sport, and I am so pleased clubs and organisations will now be able to plan their fixtures list for their seasons to resume”. A decision on a potential return date for adult community sport will be made at a later stage.

Calling all artists! Blue Mountains Creative Art Centre (BMCAC) in Glenbrook is inviting artists to enter the 2020 Blue Mountains Art Prize. Entries open this month and will be accepted from the 1st July. This is the third year for the Prize, which has proven to be a great success. It is an opportunity for artists, emerging and established, to exhibit whilst raising their art profile. There are several prize categories and many works will be for sale. Entries will be exhibited over the weekend of 3rd and 4th October in the BMCAC’s main building, situated on the corner of Hare and Moore Streets in Glenbrook. Last year, BMCAC received 60 entries across a wide range of mediums including painting, drawing, pottery, mosaics, embroidery, and print making. Joy Myers Creed was awarded the Major Prize for her hand-painted solar etching “Precious”. Prizes were also awarded to Christine Stickley (Barbara Dahl Prize), Kathleen Kennedy (Roy Brook Prize), Susan Rumming (Sadie Foster Prize), Jack Buckley (Highly Commended) and Paul Gorjan (Commended). An inaugural Builders’ Prize was awarded to Alison Shore for her pottery by David Russell, one of their builder volunteers, as a tongue in cheek reference to the Archibald’s Packer Prize. The Children’s Prize was awarded to Melody Knight, second to Amber Elliot and third to Margaret Claridge. Anala Art Advisory located in Glenbrook is again the major sponsor, with the judges yet to be determined. For more information, including the conditions of entry and prize categories, please refer to the BMCAC website at www.bmcac.org.au.
This Winter, Deputy Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said that its important residents remember to be careful when using heaters and fireplaces and electric blankets. “Don’t put your family at risk this Winter. Check that all your appliances are switched off and ensure that open fires have been fully extinguished. If we all do our bit to minimise the risks in our home, we can all stay safer together” he said. Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliot said, with families spending more time at home than ever before it is crucial, we prepare our homes. “FRNSW do a great job in keeping our community safe, now it is our time as NSW residents to do the right thing by our families, listen to the experts and ensure our homes are safe”. Some simple steps the community can take include: • Never ever leave cooking unattended • Only working smoke alarms save lives - test your smoke alarm today • Keep everything one metre away from your heater • Do not overload your power boards with appliances like heaters and electric blankets • Strong fire screens should be set up in front of open fires • Turn off your electric blanket at night • Do not use outdoor heating and cooking equipment inside your home. The use of this type of equipment indoors could lead to the build-up of carbon monoxide which could be fatal FRNSW have now launched their Get Ready For Winter checklist online and are urging the community to download this and ensure their homes are prepared. For more information on home fire safety, visit https://www.fire.nsw.gov. au/page.php?id=9284

Most humans like attention. Little humans particularly so. They like attention so much that they don’t mind whether it’s negative or positive. They would much prefer positive attention as it is unpleasant to be in trouble all the time and not very good for one’s long-term mental health. But if they don’t get any of the good stuff, they will take the negative any day of the week. But here is the trick… 40 years of research tells us that if you want to encourage positive behaviours in your child, you give more attention to positive behaviours. Energy flows where attention goes. If you are paying lots of attention to ‘naughty’, you are going to get a bundle of ‘naughty’. What would you prefer? Positive or negative behaviour? Feed the positive with descriptive praise, connection, smiles, hugs, thumbs up, high fives – lots of positive attention. So, what do you do about the negative behaviours? One strategy is called ‘planned ignoring’. You ignore the minor negative behaviours. Completely withdraw your attention – no talking, no eye contact. As soon as (the split second) your child starts behaving in a positive way, you bring your attention back to your child. No need for lectures or yakking. Chances are your child knows what he or she is doing. Truly, it’s that simple, pay attention to the positive and withdraw your attention from the negative. However, if your child is exhibiting serious mistaken behaviour, planned ignoring is not the right tool for the job. Here are some links for further reading: • https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/behaviour/ behaviour-management-tips-tools/planned-ignoring • https://www.thechildrensbookreview.com/weblog/2016/01/ yak-yak-yak-the-trouble-with-modern-parenting-thomas-wphelan-phd.html It is important to be mindful that your child's behaviour may escalate when you start using Planned Ignoring because s/he is no longer receiving negative attention. Remember to increase your attention to your child's positive behaviours. Stop using Planned Ignoring if your child's behaviour escalates to hurting self or others. r Image: www.pixabay.com

POLICE MEDIA Pedestrian Hit By Car; Man Charged A driver has been charged after a pedestrian was struck by a car in Sydney’s west last month. About 10.50pm (Saturday 20 June 2020), emergency services were called to Fifth Avenue, Llandilo, about 10km north east of Penrith, after reports a man was allegedly struck by a Ford Focus while walking down the street. The 41-year-old pedestrian suffered head and leg injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit. The provisional driver, a 19-year-old man, was subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a negative result. He was arrested and taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Penrith Police Station. Following inquiries, the Emu Heights man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (drive manner dangerous) and negligent driving (occasioning grievous bodily harm). His licence was also suspended. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday 14 July 2020.
Best in Show: Victoria Celebrates 40 Years What started out as a love of dogs as a child has turned into a successful career for local dog enthusiast Victoria Masterfield who this year celebrates 40 years of showing dogs. Victoria will reach the amazing milestone later this year. Her career has taken her all over the world, where she has won many awards since the 1980’s. She also owns the small business, Comb and Collar – Grooming by Victoria in Emu Plains. “My parents showed dogs since I was young, and I grew up with a love of dogs. I first started showing dogs when I was a teenager. This shows my age, but I have been showing dogs for almost 40 years. I specialise in American Cocker Spaniels and currently own 7 dogs. This includes 4 that live with me and I am in partnership with 3 more with my friends” explained Victoria to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. With so many highlights over the years, Victoria has won Best in Show awards and she is driven to win a very special one at home. “Over my 40 years, I have won many Best in Show awards. My most memorable is the Dogs NSW Spring Fair, where it was the first time in history for an American Cocker Spaniel to win the show. My dream is to win Best in Show at Sydney Royal Easter Show” Victoria smiled. Showing dogs can take months of preparation for the big day. Once it arrives, it is often a long day that can be quite rewarding at the end. “The day starts early, prepping the dogs for the show. Washing, blowdrying, and scissoring in the morning before heading to the show early to get a good spot ringside and near my friends. This is followed by a quick blow-dry and scissoring before heading into the ring. If all goes well, I will show the dog 3 times. This is against it’s breed, then against other breeds, then fingers crossed the judge likes the dog and I win Best in Show” she said. With restrictions being lifted and the world slowly returning to normal since the coronavirus pandemic, Victoria is looking forward to returning to the ring. “I feel honoured and privileged to show dogs. I love travelling to places I have never seen, meeting new people, catching up with friends, being with my dogs and hopefully winning prizes” she ended. r

HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Can my Diet Contribute to Osteoarthritis (OA)? Vitamin K is a fat-soluble nutrient that appears to have a role in OA (Shea 2014). In normal healthy adults, adequate daily intake is only 120 micrograms for men and 90 micrograms for women. Yet vitamin K insufficiency or deficiency is quite common in western populations: • 8-31% of normal healthy adults • ~50% in people suffering hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease • 97% of older subjects taking warfarin A recent publication found people with: 1.very low blood vitamin K were nearly a. twice as likely to have articular cartilage damage & b. just under 3 times as likely to have meniscus damage progression after 3 years compared to people with sufficient vitamin K 2.higher blood levels of protein whose concentration reflects lower vitamin K status, had higher odds of: a. meniscus damage, b. osteophytes, c. bone marrow lesions, d. subarticular cysts 3.very low blood vitamin K levels were more likely to have worsening of articular cartilage and meniscus damage Osteoarthritis is a disease not just of cartilage but of the
underlying bone. Several vitamin K-dependant proteins are present in cartilage and bone. They have weird names such as: 1. MGP 2. GAS-6 3. TGFBI 4. PN or OSF-2 5. GRP 6. BGP or OC All are made by bone & cartilage cells. Each helps keep bone and cartilage healthy. The last step in the production processes of all these proteins requires vitamin K. If vitamin K is low, each of the proteins is still made (except for the last step), but most don’t function. Thus bone & cartilage maintenance suffers, resulting in increased risk of OA over time. So, why is vitamin K deficiency so common? • western diets typically contain foods that are poor sources of vitamin K, • the vitamin is difficult to absorb from our typical vitamin K rich foods such as spinach, • we eat few truly fermented foods such as Natto where vitamin K is high and absorbable • chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are common & decrease absorption • medicaments such as warfarin significantly lower vitamin K levels r Image: https://www.japanesecooking101.com/wp-content/ uploads/2014/02/IMG_8021.jpg

Happy First Anniversary in the New Premises Can you believe that it has been one year since we moved premises to 49 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills? Wow, time flies! We have settled in well and are loving the new premises. Our new premises are so beautiful with 3m ceilings, double brick throughout, green bull nosed verandahs and lots of open space on the acreage. You will not believe how big the premises are! Come and check out the off leash dog park. Your dog will have so much fun! We even have a cat waiting room now, which is separate from the dogs, so your cat will be less stressed. Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are
calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans. The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over! We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027. r

July has arrived and it is bitterly cold. As I write this, my feet are snug in slipper sox by the heater. We are making slow progress, one day at a time, with the relaxing of restrictions due to COVID-19. This month sees the reinstatement of team sports, and increased numbers in group gatherings with steady increases at pubs, clubs and restaurants. We've also witnessed some setbacks in neighbouring States, which has caused some trepidation in further releasing of restrictions. If you're anything like me, I've used the time in isolation wisely by working on mini projects that I seemingly 'never' had time for before this. Coming out of time in 'lockdown' sees my freshly renovated caravan at the ready for many a trip, particularly relevant due to the current state of play with restrictions on travel and the delayed reopening of the borders. The perfect excuse to 'holiday at home!'. It's time to become a tourist in your own backyard. We are fortunate to be at the foothills of some amazing hidden gems...... time to explore! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Almost everything will work again if you 'unplug' it for a few minutes, including you!'.
