A Place to Find Your Voice They say that life is a song and that’s certainly the case for the Blaxland Adult Glee Club. The local group, or ‘gleeks’ as they are better known as, come together to meet and sing every week at the foot of the Blue Mountains. Forming in March 2017, Blaxland Adult Glee Club meet every Monday night from 7:00pm till 8:00pm at the Sharon Burridge Hall of Blaxland Community Centre. “It’s an hour a week to get out of the house and away from work to sing your heart out” said Sandra Lie of Adult Glee Club. The term generally runs for 10 weeks and is based around the NSW school terms. The cost to join is $170 for a term and trial or casual passes to drop-in anytime are $22. “It's the opportunity to sing with a warm and inviting community of people who don't judge you for your ability or skills. The group has no auditions and there's no pressure to sing solos. Some of the greatest moments have come from being on stage together and performing at events or with fellow gleeks from different Adult Glee Clubs” Sandra explained to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. “What a surreal experience to bring together the harmonic lines you've learnt and to showcase that on stage. Without doubt, the friendships that are formed are a big highlight. You really become one big family and the singing in harmony goes beyond the physical music you create” continued Sandra. The group have been involved with events such as the Blackheath Choir Festival, Australia Day in Sydney Harbour, World Voice Day, and their own End of Year Shows. They also participate in ‘Glee Goes Solo Night’, an annual celebration where individuals can sing solo or as a duet with the backing of a professional band. “It takes people out of their comfort zones, and for some, back to their zone” Sandra smiled. So, what is the groups favourite song to sing, you might ask? “This Is Me from The Greatest Showmen” ended Sandra. $2.5 Million Facelift for Historic Police Cottage
CALL US CRAZY!
SHAVE
The NSW Government is investing $1.5 million to help transform an historic police cottage on the banks of the Nepean River in Emu Plains into a restaurant or café. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government has appointed the Penrith City Council as Crown land manager of the beautiful riverside site and provided funding to restore this 113-year-old building. “We have allocated $1.5 million from the COVID-19 stimulus program to help the council restore the historic former police cottage on the reserve and turn it into a café or restaurant” Mr Ayres said. “The police station and residence were built in 1908 and functioned until 1921 with the residence continuing to be used for police officers until the 1950s. “Now 70 years later, it will be transformed into a restaurant or café on the beautiful banks of the Nepean River for all the community to enjoy”. Mr Ayres said the COVID-19 stimulus program was funding improvements to Crown land reserves across the State. “The stimulus program supports the upgrade of projects on Crown reserves to improve public spaces and infrastructure, such as museums, historic buildings and showgrounds, while supporting local jobs and economies” Mr Ayres said. “Green spaces and recreational facilities are critical for the health of communities by providing quality places where people can relax, exercise, play and enjoy the natural environment”. Penrith City Council Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the old Police Cottage is a key element in the greater upgrade of the Regatta Park precinct and, Penrith City Council will contribute an extra $1 million on top of the funding from the NSW Government announced earlier this year. “The old Police Cottage will be restored and repurposed as a waterfront dining venue for locals and visitors to enjoy while preserving the historic cottage for years into the future” Clr Hitchen said. r Feature Article: [Cover + Above] Artist impression of restored Police Cottage | Images Supplied

Emu Plains Woman Explores Life as a Submariner Emu Plains local Shania Tutton recently returned from an experience of a lifetime. Chosen out of hundreds of entrants to take part in an unique opportunity at Australia’s largest naval base HMAS Stirling in Perth, Shania was able to live a day in the life of a Royal Australian Navy submariner. The 23-year-old said she was inspired to apply for the National Submarine Tour and Competition by her stepfather who served in the Royal Australian Navy. “Having grown up with my step-father in the Navy and hearing stories from his tours, I have been interested in joining the Australian Defence Force (ADF) ever since I can remember,” she said. “This competition was an amazing opportunity to help get a better idea of what I’d like to do within the ADF.” The National Submarine Tour and Competition awarded 12 winners from around the country the opportunity to explore a Collins Class submarine, visit state-ofthe-art training facilities, tackle challenging leadership exercises, and connect with currently serving submariners. Shania hoped to learn about the opportunities joining the ADF could offer and is passionate about chasing new experiences and challenging herself. "I was surprised by how much I loved seeing and hearing about the huge diesel engines that the Collins Class submarine use," Shania said. Open to all Australians aged 18 to 35, the competition received over 1,235 submissions, with entrants completing an online simulation that tested their ability to take command of a submarine mission. Afterwards, they were asked to describe in 50 words or less what qualities they have that would make them a great submariner, with winners chosen by their responses. “I’ve been interested in joining the Australian Defence Force because you experience things that most people don’t normally experience in their lives, whilst being able to represent and help your country.” Director General Defence Force Recruiting Brigadier Duncan Hayward said the tour provides a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes, see world-class technology and training facilities and meet currently serving Royal Australian Navy submariners. “If you’re looking for an exciting and adventurous lifestyle, with travel opportunities, quality training, unique experiences, great pay and benefits, a job as submariner could be right for you,” Brigadier Hayward said. There is no Excuse for Violence
Last month, I wrote about domestic and family violence. It is a hot topic at the moment, and rightly so. Domestic and family violence causes so much disruption to people’s lives and has ripple effects for children, women, and men. 1 in 4 families are affected by DFV, and that’s probably a conservative number because so much of it goes unreported. 1 woman on average is killed each week by her partner or ex-partner. Have you been watching See What You Made Me Do on SBS? If not, check out this 3 part documentary on SBS Demand. But watch and listen carefully in the second episode how one man minimises his violence and blames the woman. ‘If she didn’t nag me I wouldn’t have snapped and tried to strangle her.’ What? That one slipped past the editing crew. Since when did someone’s words justify you trying to kill him/her? Have you also seen the television ads ‘Unmute Yourself’ (https://youtu.be/9g4-puN2K9o)? They are brilliant. A boy is seen being aggressive to a girl, and one parent says ‘he probably just likes her’, and the other parent reflects ‘no, there is no excuse, we have to stop him’. A fella on the sidelines at the footy tells a young male player ‘stop playing like a girl’ and an older man says ‘what’s wrong with playing like a girl?’. And finally I come to my point of this article. There is no excuse for violence of words or actions. What we teach our little boys is how they will grow up. Don’t give them a sense of entitlement, that just because they are boys they can do as they please. If they grow up rough they will be rough men, and it might be your daughter or daughter-in-law that they will be treating rough. Don’t blame the victim, ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. Teach your children that they can’t control anybody else but themselves and they alone are responsible for their thoughts, words, and actions. I have had the opportunity and honour to observe a Men’s Behaviour Change group recently. There are a few organisations around (BaptistCare, Relationships Australia) that offer individual counselling and groupwork for men who use coercion, control, and violence with their partners and in their families. These programs are supportive and gentle, but they do challenge the men to take responsibility for their own behaviour. What I have learnt from the men in the groups is don’t grow your boys up rough. Acknowledge that they have feelings, and allow them to express their feelings. Grow them up as humans, regardless of gender. We all have the power to end violence. r

The Lions Roar
The Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club are ready to roar and looking to have their best season yet this year. 200 players will take the field for the local club in 2021, comprising of 10 teams. This includes Auskick teams (Under 5’s to 8’s) and the Under 9’s through to the Under 17’s. “We can’t wait for the competition to get started again. Despite not having a preseason, we will look to have 15 rounds and 3 weeks of finals footy. Everyone is excited and positive for the year ahead” smiled Paul Jones, Executive Committee Member of the Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club. Even with the disruptions of last season with regards to COVID-19, the club was still able to taste success. The Under 14’s won their Grand Final in the West Competition and have this year been promoted to the Harbour (Sydney Wide) Competition. They will be the first team from the club to be elevated into this competition. Two players became Life Members of the Lions in 2020. This took the total to 3 Life Members within the club. To qualify for this honour, you must have played 150 games. “We still have some vacancies available in our age teams. Particularly in the Under 15’s is where we are looking to boost numbers,” said Paul. The club now boasts its first homegrown player in the AFL Women’s Competition, with Brenna Tarrant drafted as the 72nd Pick in the 2019 AFLW Draft for the Melbourne Demons. Recent success from the Greater Western Sydney Giants has helped to establish the popularity of the sport in the local area. “Our club continues to go from strength to strength. We started in 2000 and many of our players continue to pull on the Lions jersey year in, year out. Personally, I enjoy watching the kids play and develop their games” Paul ended. If you would like more information, including sponsorship packages, search Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club on Facebook. It’s no secret that many of us are time poor and that there just aren’t enough hours in the day to fit our busy lifestyles into. What if we told you that there was an early morning club where you could join like minded individuals to help start your day right? The 5.30 Club Penrith has launched. The group meets at 5:30am from Monday to Friday at Starbucks on Castlereagh Road in Penrith, where members work together on their own passion projects, side hustles or overall personal development as the sun comes up. Emu Plains local Kirstene Ciappara is the group organiser of the 5.30 Club Penrith. “My motivation for starting a group in Penrith came after I experienced the 5.30 Club Bondi earlier in the year. Everyone was so welcoming at the Bondi club and it was a really motivating environment to be in because everyone was ‘winning the morning’. This really inspired me because I felt like we didn't have any spaces or environments that empowered people to pursue these things whilst connecting with others who did the same” explained Kirstene. “I attend the club every day, so there's always a smiling face to welcome new people. We have another 5-6 members that each come 2-3 days per week” she added. Some of the activities that the group participates in during the ‘power hour’ include personal development (reading and journaling), learning (courses and online study) and connecting with other members. “Whilst we do priortise some form of ‘work’ during the power hour, we really value connection as well and it's amazing what can come from that relationship” Kirstene replied. The 5.30 Club Penrith is a part of a much wider 5.30 Club movement across Australia, which began in 2019. It is hoped that there will be opportunities to connect with people from other clubs with events and initiatives in the future. “Being a part of the group means that I consciously start my day and that can be an absolute game changer for how the rest of my days pan out. I also really value the connection piece; I love meeting new people, especially ones that are like-minded, driven and eager to create a life they love” smiled Kirstene. OneSok has donated 600 pairs from their European sock range to three local charities, Mama Lana’s Community Foundation, Hawkesbury’s Helping Hands and Thrive Services. You can donate a pair of charity socks for $4 from their website at https://www.onesok.store/. They are targeting 1,000 pairs of sock donations and have already reached 60% of their goal. “Our mission is to change the world, one sock at a time” said Karen Mousley, Founder of OneSok to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. OneSok is a social enterprise, created to stand up for human rights including ending poverty and modern slavery, whilst providing a fun, affordable Australian brand. Do You Need A Rest?
It’s great to have some rest - at the end of the day, or the week, or a busy period. In fact, it seems like whatever we do, whether work, or exercising or creating, or with people – we need rest. And we rest in different ways, don’t we? Sleep has got to be an obvious time to rest, and how stressful is it when we don’t sleep well? We can rest by doing something too, like going somewhere on a holiday, or spending time with others. But did you know that rest is so important in life that Jesus spoke about it? Jesus put himself forward as the place, in fact, the person, in whom we can find rest. He said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29) He knew we needed rest, but he’s talking about something even bigger than the rest we take at the end of the day, or the week, or the year. He’s talking about having a relationship with the God who made us and offers to re-make us through Jesus. He’s talking about serving a Lord who loves us, and knows what’s best for us, and provides it for us. He’s talking about being one of his people, with the rest of his people. And he’s talking about having an eternal rest, not horizontal in death, but alive and at peace with God. That’s an awesome offer. Next time you feel the need for a rest, check out Jesus’ offer of rest that will last! r

How to Stretch Successfully – But Without Pain To stretch effectively, you should pretty much do the opposite of what most people do. That is, you should: 1. Stretch regularly (just once-twice a week will do), 2. Spend time on each stretch, 3. Use a slow deliberate stretching technique, 4. Avoid any pain, 5. Relax into the stretch, 6. Use regular and deep breathing, 7. Never force the stretch Technique: For a left hamstring stretch, bring your left leg onto a table (10-15cm higher than your knees; higher if you’re very flexible). Keep your left leg straight and draw your left foot toward you. Bend forward at the hip keeping your back straight. See if you can touch your toes or stretch past them, then come up/out of this ‘test’ stretch. Now bend your left arm at the elbow. Keeping your back straight, bend forward at the hip again till your left elbow rests on your left thigh and your back remains straight. Slide your elbow toward your left foot, until you feel a good stretch in your
10 June 2021 www.emuleonaygazette.com.au
left hamstrings (but no pain). Relax, breathe in and out deeply and regularly, wait until the stretch completely subsides and you’re comfortable at this position (may take 30 – 60 seconds, just be patient). Now slide your elbow further forward along your thigh until you again feel a strong stretch, but no pain. Stop there, repeat the same deep relaxed breathing until you cannot feel the stretch. Continue this for 4-6 cycles (more if you like). Once you’re happy with the number of stretching cycles you’ve completed, test how far your left fingers/hand moves past your toes now. You should find that you have significantly greater range of motion in your left hamstring than when you started. Now repeat the same for your right hamstrings. Note: people with lower back issues should stretch their hamstrings lying down to avoid straining their back. This technique allows you to gently fatigue the hamstring muscle-spindles. It takes a little more time, but only needs to be done once a week, and is likely to be much more successful long term and not painful!

Rats And Mice – Caution With Rat Bait Toxicity In Your Pet
It is cold and dark, so we spend more time indoors, but you won’t be the only one seeking shelter. As temperatures drop, mice and rats head indoors to search for food, and they might pick your house for their new residence. STOP! Most rat baits are really dangerous to pets. We have seen several rat bait ingestion in dogs recently, and with treatment they survive. Rat bait is a silent killer. Unlike snail bait which causes violent symptoms within minutes after ingestion, most rat bait takes 3-5 days before it starts to take effect in a pet. There are different kinds of rat bait available; the most common are anti-coagulant poisons that stop blood from clotting normally, resulting in excessive bleeding. The development of clinical signs is usually delayed for 3-7 days after the dog or cat
consumes the poison. Common signs of rat bait poisoning may include: • Obvious external signs of haemorrhage (dependent on where the bleeding is; for example bruising, bloody faeces or urine, nose bleeds, vomiting blood). • Lethargy • Weakness • Wobbliness • Loss of appetite • Distended abdomen from bleeding into the abdomen • Coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing from bleeding into the chest • Pale gums from anaemia • Bulging of eyes from bleeding behind the eyes • Sudden death with no obvious clinical signs can also occur. If you know that your pet has eaten rat bait, contact your veterinarian immediately. Vomiting can be induced to remove as much of the rat bait as possible and treatment can be started immediately. Rat bait kills rats, mice and your pet if they ingest them. Try more pet-friendly ways to get rid of vermin. Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. v Image: www.pixabay.com

Regatta Park Kiosk One Step Closer
The transformation of Regatta Park at the Nepean River is one step closer with the Development Application (DA) for a new kiosk formally submitted for assessment. The 88sqm kiosk will be a café style space delivering dine in and takeaway food and drink options, to improve the amenity at Regatta Park. Funded and delivered by Penrith City Council, the kiosk will increase the appeal and functionality of the new area and further unlock the potential of our greatest natural asset, the Nepean River. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said the kiosk is an exciting addition to the Regatta Park upgrade and responds to the community’s request to celebrate, activate, and enhance the Nepean River. “Regatta Park is a much-loved and highly valued part of the Nepean River precinct, and we’ve worked closely with our community to develop a plan for this space that we can all be proud of” Cr McKeown said. “The kiosk will complement the upgrade of Regatta Park by providing food and drink options for the community to enjoy in this spectacular location along the Nepean River”. “The new kiosk is just one of the many projects Council is undertaking to revitalise Penrith and enhance our position as the most liveable city in Western Sydney” Cr McKeown added. The kiosk will be located within the new 112m long pavilion being created as part of the larger upgrade of Regatta Park as part of the Western Sydney City Deal, Western Parkland City Liveability program. The kiosk is due to be complete in late 2022. The kiosk will be on Public Exhibition for community feedback until 7 June 2021. Yep! Winter has arrived. It's fresh, the air is crisp and oooh my frozen toes are now snuggled nicely into the hand-knitted socks my wonderful friend Betty made for me! Last month we saw music concerts back on the agenda, along with a number of other community events. While we enjoy the return of these long awaited festivities, it's not without noticeable differences of our 'new' postcovid life....checking in, social distancing, smaller groups or masks in larger crowds. A number of these initiatives are definitely a step forward for our overall future wellness. Narelle continues on with last month's topic of Domestic Family Violence, because it's too important not to. Find more on this in 'Parents Corner'. My dear Aunty celebrates 83 amazing years filled with memories and heartwarming treasures. As Aunty Bronwyn would say, 'never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day'. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
