It began as a dream over a year ago and is now a reality, with Emu Plains local Tracey Horey launching Sniffspace, Australia’s only directory of privately-owned, secure off-leash spaces for dogs and their owners, last month. Tracey’s motivation to create Sniffspace came from her own personal experiences with Rafferty, her Kelpie X rescue dog. “I rescued Rafferty when he was 4 months old. He had been dumped outside a country pound when he was 2 months old. He is my life and I love him to bits. We do obedience and agility, and he is great with everyone he knows, but is very wary and scared of strange dogs and people” explained Tracey to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. “Rafferty isn't suited to busy dog parks, but he does need to get out and about and enjoy some off-leash time. Time in different environments is hugely important to a dog’s mental health” she added. Tracey and her team would one day like to see secure Sniffspaces all over Australia. No matter where you live, travel or holiday they hope that there will be secure spaces for our fur babies to have a run in and enjoy. “We hope this gives the off-leash dogs and their owners alternatives to the sometimes-volatile environment of a dog park or having them leashed at all times at local parks (and there are now many in other states where dogs are prohibited completely now). This gives them a safer space to play, hence improving their mental health and safety. “It will provide an outlet for all those people that are now getting dogs in apartments or on much smaller blocks. We also hope to be able to provide more spaces for dog trainers and dogs and their select friends in the future with multi-dog bookings” said Tracey. For more information or to get involved, visit www.sniffspace. com.au. r

Contract Awarded for Emu Plains Commuter Car Park Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that the contract to design and build the new 750 additional car parking spaces for public transport customers at Emu Plains Station has been awarded to Stephen Edwards Constructions Pty Ltd. The Emu Plains Commuter Car Park project is a joint initiative of the Federal and State Governments to provide additional commuter parking and ease congestion on roads. “The Commuter Car Park Program is designed to make it easier for customers who need to drive part of their journey to access public transport hubs” Stuart Ayres said. “Stephen Edwards Constructions has been awarded the contract to deliver the new car park on behalf of Transport for NSW. Detailed design work has commenced, and early works are due to start in the coming months” Stuart Ayres said. “This project will not only provide more access to parking for the community but employ around 50 people in a range of fields including engineering, construction and administration roles”. Key features of the overall project include: • a new commuter car park with up to 750 additional spaces located on vacant land to the west of Emu Plains Station, off Old Bathurst Road • additional accessible parking spaces and motorcycle parking bays • a new footbridge over Old Bathurst Road to provide safe and direct pedestrian access between the new car park and the station • a new intersection on Old Bathurst Road to allow vehicle entry and exit into the car park • landscaping including a vegetated drainage channel through the car park • provision for future electric vehicle charging spaces • CCTV, lighting and wayfinding signage for improved safety and security. The project is expected to be completed in early 2022. For more information, please visit: https://www.transport. nsw.gov.au/commuter-car-park-program.
Lighting Upgrade for Dukes Oval Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith recently announced that a lighting upgrade will be made at Dukes Oval, Emu Plains thanks to a NSW grant of $160,000 to Penrith City Council through the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund. The NSW Government will provide a record $51.7 million from its Crown Reserves Improvement Fund to maintain and upgrade Crown reserves and community facilities across the State including Penrith. Stuart Ayres said this record investment would protect and enhance Crown land while stimulating our local economies. “The floodlighting upgrade for Dukes Oval will enable evening competition to take place and make nighttime training safer” said Stuart Ayres. Mr Paul Jones of Emu Plains JAFLC said, “We are extremely pleased to hear of this upgrading of lights at Dukes Oval. “This will be of great benefit to the club as it continues to grow over the next few years. Better lighting will allow us more options for matches and wet weather catch-ups. "As a club we will, for the first time be placing teams into the Sydney Harbour as well as the Western Sydney competition this season which is a big step forward for AFL in the region. The improved facilities will go a long way towards making this a success. On behalf of the club, I thank everyone for their efforts in making this grant available for the upgrade at Dukes Oval. GO LIONS!” For more information, visit: https://reservemanager. crownland.nsw.gov.au/funding/crif

Salvo’s Food Drop at Woolworths Emu Plains
The Lions Club of Emu Plains have organised, in conjunction with Woolworths Manager, Evan and his staff at Emu Plains, to run a ‘food trolley drop’ for the benefit of the Salvation Army, from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th March at the Lennox Village store. On those days, Woolworths shoppers between 9:00am and 5:00pm, will have the opportunity to donate one ‘extra’ nonperishable item over their normal shop by placing it in the designated Salvation Army trolley, located at the checkout. Nonperishable items include things like bottled water, long life milk, 2-minute noodles, pasta and pasta sauce, tinned fruit, baked beans, cereal, jam or spread, tea bags and long-life juice. This initiative between Emu Plains Lions Club and Woolworths Emu Plains relies on the generosity of Woolworths’ shoppers from Emu Plains and the surrounding community. Alan Cooper, President of the Lions Club of Emu Plains, and on behalf of the Salvation Army, wishes to thank everyone in advance for their involvement. r

When Quirky becomes Different

Do you have a child who is different? A quirky kid? He or she does things differently to other children? When does ‘quirky’ stop being an expression of the individual and an indication that some intervention is required? Those who could, would. So if children in general are able to draw at the age of four then your four year-old child should be able to draw, even if she isn’t that keen on it. If your 6 yearold child isn’t making friends when other 6 year-olds have fit in nicely and found a group of children he can relate to, then your child is experiencing some limitations in his social and emotional development. The labels don’t help – lazy, stubborn, aggressive, naughty, bad, stupid, a typical boy/girl, etc, – they get in the way of finding out what is really happening for your child. Is it a medical problem? A physical problem? A neurodevelopmental problem? I can’t tell you the number of times a parent has spoken in a parenting group about his/her child’s difficulties and the other parents have jumped in with solutions based on what they think the diagnosis could be. Or a well-meaning relative or friend has told a parent that she thinks her child has autism because she knows someone who has autism and they have tantrums just like that. Chances are your mother-in-law, friend, neighbour, or local shopkeeper is not qualified to make that call. NOTHING beats an assessment by a qualified professional. Start with a trip to your GP and keep asking questions until you are satisfied that your child is getting what they need. Quirky is absolutely fine, but if your child is limited in one or more areas of development (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, intellectual) it can lead to psychological or mental health problems later in childhood or during adolescence, and it’s often much easier to get help when a child is young rather than when the behaviours have become entrenched later. r

The Walk of Life
A new walking group for women has launched in the local community, with Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk beginning in December last year. Meeting out the front of the Nepean Coffee Club at Tench Reserve every Wednesday from 6:00pm, the group has a coffee and a chat before they head off for the walk at 7:00pm. Together they follow the 6.5km Great River Walk along the picturesque Nepean River. Started by locals Angela Lambros and Jesseka Flakelar, the walk has seen new and returning walkers participating in the local initiative, growing to over 30 women each week. “We recognise the positive impact that the Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk have had on the community and we wanted to create a similar safe space to reignite social connection and empower women to build each other up. “As we both work in the mental health industry, we are passionate about starting conversations around mental health and normalising these experiences. We see the value in social connections as a way to support mental wellness and improving our physical health is a nice bonus!” said Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk. The group allows for physical, mental, and social connections through exercise to its members. They hope to grow and continue this important program into the future. “Our plan is to connect to as many women as possible, as this initiative is saving lives and we couldn’t be happier to see women coming together. Our hope is to connect women to one another and to the supports available within our amazing community” explained Angela and Jesseka to the District Gazette. They can be found on Facebook and Instagram at Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk or contacted via email on penrithwomenwalkandtalk@hotmail.com. r Feature Article: [Left] Angela and Jesseka on the Yandhai Nepean Crossing Bridge [Cover] Angela with local Penrith women attending the walk. For 21 years, love and caring have gone into the making of quilts by the ladies of the Caring Hearts Community Quilters. This has been for the palliative care wards of Hawkesbury, Nepean, Springwood and Blue Mountains Hospitals as well as for cancer groups, women’s refuges, children’s wards, neo natal wards and the needy in our community. Margaret Collier, one of the founding members of the Caring Hearts Community Quilters said, “Hopefully this group can continue for another 21 years with new members joining each year. Sadly, the Airing of the Quilts, which takes place on the 10th of April this year, will be the last. This doesn’t mean that we are ready to stop quilting, by no means. We all love quilting and will continue to make quilts for these groups while ever we have needle and thread”. The hard working and dedicated group of ladies have sent quilts to Springwood, Cobargo, and Victoria to comfort those that lost their homes to bushfires. In recent times it was closer to home for one of their members in Dargan. 2019 saw the local group adopt two small schools in the drought-stricken towns of Tooraweenah and Eumungerie in New South Wales. It was here that they visited them, giving each child in the primary and preschools a quilt and a huge bag of goodies for Christmas and handmade gifts and toiletries for their parents. “We are always on the lookout for those who need a little comfort in their lives” explained Margaret to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. This year’s Airing of the Quilts will feature over 150 quilts on display at the historic Arms of Australia Inn Museum at Emu Plains. There will be a trading table, book stand, vintage embroidery, and gift table. This is an outdoor venue and will have to be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. See you there for this special local event not to be missed.

The little-known link between Easter and Feet How do you feel about washing someone else’s feet? I think I know the answer, so I’ll spare painting the picture in any more detail! Now imagine yourself back with Jesus, the night before Good Friday, the night before he died, the night before the first Easter weekend. You’re one of his disciples, and after three years of being gripped by his teaching, growing to love him, and pinning your hopes on him, he does the most extraordinary thing. He takes a bowl of water, a towel and starts washing your feet (it’s in John 13:1-17) This is the job for the lowliest of the low, and you’re convinced he is God’s chosen king, God himself, it’s beneath him, so why would he do such a thing? Then Jesus says to you ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ But he’s not just talking about your clean feet. He’s given you a living picture of what his death means. He’s the greatest among the disciples, the greatest one who has ever walked the earth, but using his greatness in loving service of we who need it. Jesus’ death and resurrection is the greatest act of service in history – and the most important! He died so our death needn’t be the final word on our broken lives. He rose so that all who would receive his great act of service would rise to life with God forever. Next time you’re washing your feet, remember the one who washed his disciple’s feet, to show all of us the heart of Easter. And we’d love you to join us to celebrate – this Easter HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Could Your Back Issues be Bowel Issues? This article was inspired by a number of recent clients seen at the clinic with back pain that did not respond well to normal muscle elongation therapy. Although scans showed vertebral and discal issues, which may have been the source of these patients’ pain, client histories reported history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with conventional IBD medication. IBD includes two separate but similar diseases - ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. One could ask whether the patient’s back pain might be due to: 1. IBD related inflammation 2. Or more conventional vertebral/discal issues plus resultant nerve pain and muscle spasm? The short answer is, it could be one, the other, or both. In Australia 80,000 people live with IBD. Medically, ‘association between ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease’… with spinal-pain and ‘inflammatory back pain (IBP)’ is ‘well described’ and ‘seen in ~25% of people’ with IBD. Anatomically, the bowel is close to the lumbar vertebrae allowing bowel inflammatory-processes to “spill-over” into these neighbouring tissues. Since not all people with IBD have chronic back pain, any
back pain experienced by IBD patients might primarily be due to their specific combination of spinal-structural-issues, and/or any associated muscle spasms, inflammation and nerve-pain, with these symptoms originating from and being limited to the nerves, muscles and connective tissue of the lower back, plus any areas serviced by affected nerves (think sciatica). If this is the case 2-3 sessions of muscle elongation therapy should result in significant reduction in: 1. back pain and paraesthesias, 2. restriction of movement If IBD-related-inflammation is the major back-pain cause, treatment-progress will be minor and dietary change should be considered. A recent intervention study concluded that adopting the Mediterranean diet ‘was associated with spontaneous improvement of disease activity and inflammatory markers’ in both ‘Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis’. Once IBD related inflammatory processes subside, back-pain symptoms may reduce also, and non-IBD related symptoms may be more amenable to muscle elongation therapy. If you have IBD or related back pain, why not call us at the clinic to discuss dietary intervention.

Beautiful Cat with 3 Kittens! On 8th January 2021 we had a beautiful stray cat brought in that was pregnant. Unfortunately, she had no microchip. We informed the pound and the other veterinary hospitals in the area of the stray cat, but we could not find an owner. We could have sent her to the pound to be rehomed, but there are already too many cats at the pound, and being pregnant, we wanted to provide a safe environment for her and the soon to be kittens. She is such a nice smoochy cat, that loves attention, so she became one of our adoption cats. She gained 0.6kg in 3 weeks and her belly was growing every day. On 1st February 2021, she passed 1 dead kitten. We elected to perform a caesarian and desex her to ensure the other kittens had the best chance of survival. She now has 3 tiny little kittens to look after. They are so cute! Mum is doing well and she spends all day feeding the 3 kittens. Such a good mum! We will be posting updates on Facebook on the kittens each week. It will be so much fun to see how much they grow each week! The mum and the 3 kittens are available to purchase through our cat adoption program. They will be wormed every week and vaccinated at 8 weeks of age. The kittens will require a 2nd vaccination 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine, then due yearly. The kittens will be desexed before finding their forever home. Please call 02 4736 2027 to enquire about the mum and the kittens for adoption. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Here we are into March already, as we wave goodbye to Summer and welcome Autumn. The warmer weather will slowly be replaced with cooler temperatures and the once lush foliage of our gardens and trees will change. As we start to adjust to the new normal, there is some promising news with vaccines for COVID-19 soon to be rolled out in Australia. Many of us have now returned to our offices as zoom meetings are replaced by face-to-face meetings. There is a strong sense of community and positivity everywhere you go as things begin to look up once again for us all. This month we meet some truly amazing people with stories about our local heroes. They are people who go above and beyond the call of duty, enriching our lives and communities. ‘Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show’. Enjoy Your Community News.
