FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister | P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

Hope For Us All You’d be surprised to hear the story of the Apostle Paul. You may already know that he wrote a lot of the letters in the Bible. He also influenced Luke who wrote another great chunk of it. You may even have heard him called a ‘saint’. In fact, you might imagine God was pretty pleased with Paul. But Paul had quite a surprising story. He was an expert in the law of God. But when the followers of Jesus started talking about Jesus as God, he was there, hunting them down, ready to put them in jail, and approving of them being killed. But when he left Jerusalem to continue that hunt he had a wild experience. He heard a voice, and the risen Jesus appeared to him. But rather than being struck down, Jesus changed his heart, mind and actions from that point on (Acts 9). Why did Jesus take this undeserving, violent enemy and enlist him to have a huge role in his plans? Paul tells us himself, looking back: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.” (1 Timothy 1:15-16) God transformed Paul’s life so all of us could have hope. God gave Paul forgiveness to show that anyone, even the worst of us, may receive his forgiveness. No matter what you have done, no matter what you have become, God in Jesus offers you this gift, God’s forgiveness. Will you accept it?

This month, the Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk will be celebrating their first birthday. To mark the occasion, the local group have organised a special walk, taking place on Saturday 21st March along the Nepean River and everyone is invited. “Similar to the Troy Harding Memorial Walk, we have organised a Saturday morning walk to celebrate our first birthday. We’ll be meeting at the Coffee Club side of the Nepean River, near the bridge from 10:00am for a 10:30am walk. This walk is a little unusual to our normal Thursday night walk and we encourage wives, girlfriends and families to come along” said Paul Wallace of Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Since it first began, the walk has grown significantly from their first day of 19 walkers to consistently having over 100 men walk every Thursday. “Seeing some of the guys get genuine happiness and a sense of camaraderie from the group has been a real highlight, as well as the benefits and health improvements of being active” explained Paul. “The group has resonated with so many men because it is a non-judging, all equal format where blokes feel comfortable talking or listening” he added. Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk plan to go forward and continue what they’ve done over the past 12 months, which is to provide an outlet and bond for men of all ages to feel comfortable and to get things off their chest and improve their mental and physical well-being. For those men who have thought about joining the walk, but haven’t yet, Paul has this message of support, “Everybody walks for the first time and, although a lot of men suffer from anxiety or depression, this non-judging group have one motto and that is ‘No one walks alone’ “. r Feature Article: [Cover] Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk Organisers (L-R) Billy Beggs, Jamie Large, Kevin Canning, Paul Wallace and Alan Harding (Andrew Paech – absent) | Image Supplied [Above] Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk group Image: Patric Lyneham

New Look for Emu Sports Club

Emu Sports Club is nearing completion of stage one of an extensive Club renovation, which has seen a complete refurbishment of the bar and bistro areas, as well as the function room. “We are excited to welcome our members and guests into the newly renovated Club” said Andrew Gardner, CEO of Emu Sports Club. “Emu Sports Club is an integral part of the local community and serves as a meeting place for many community groups and members. The upgrade of our facilities is evidence of the Club’s continued investment and support, and our dedication to providing a warm and hospitable atmosphere for all our members and guests”. The renovations have been a 6-month project, that includes relocation of the bar and bistro, refurbishment of the kitchen, a new lounge seating area with fireplace and new furniture throughout. Due for completion in the near future, a lift will be installed at the front entrance of the Club. “Installation of the lift allows full accessibility at the front entrance of the Club, with direct access to the bar/bistro and function areas and will be hugely beneficial for all community members with limited mobility” Mr Gardner said. The Club also debuted a new menu to coincide with the renovations. “Being able to provide fresh, high quality food is a real focus at the Club. Patrons can enjoy their favourite dishes or can branch out and try an array of new dishes that have been designed inhouse by our Head Chef”. Emu Sports Club is open 7 days a week, with lunch available from 12:00pm to 2:30pm, and dinner from 5:30pm. For bookings, call 4735 5300.

A Cappella for Every Fella!

Yes, it might be a corny slogan, but a cappella singing relies just on voices without musical instruments. It creates beautiful harmonies and ringing chords, entertaining audiences. Penrith Harmony is an all-male chorus that sings in Barbershop style (but without the straw hats and bow ties). Our singing involves four-part harmonies using tenor, lead, baritone and bass voices. Research shows that community singing can make people healthier and happier. It provides the thrill of performance, the satisfaction of remembering words and notes, and the chance to broaden your social contacts. Penrith Harmony was founded in 1988. We are one of the region’s most enduring singing ensembles, performing regularly at local community and charity events. You might have seen us doing our Christmas repertoire in the foyer of Panthers, before Christmas. As part of a recruitment drive, we are providing a free six week learn to sing course, running through March and April. It doesn’t matter if you can’t make all the weeks. Come along to one or two and see if you like it. Men, this could be the opportunity you have been waiting for to take up a new interest, or to resume singing after a lapse of some time. Women, this is a chance to encourage your husbands or sons to give it a try and get them away from the television set! Kids Are a Work In Progress A child’s brain develops from the bottomup. Certain parts of the brain are more active than other parts during a child’s development. They are still developing all of the parts of the brain but there are ‘hot spots’ at certain times in a child’s development. This brain activity has an impact on a child’s behaviour. Some of the things that they find difficult to do or understand, are a result of having a brain that continues to develop right up to the age of 25 years. There are periods of time where your child does not have the capacity for logic, reasoning, and thinking. There are periods of time where they struggle to control their emotions. There are periods of time where they do not have the capacity to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own. And where they think that the universe revolves around them. These times require lots of understanding and patience. You will still set limits and boundaries but you will expect to repeat yourself many times. Many of the things that children do can be explained by research into the brain and child development. If your child is having tantrums, seeking attention, and not thinking things through within the normal age ranges for these behaviours, then in a strange way that’s good because they are developing as they should. All of this is happening while they are learning how to integrate their experiences, making sense of their world and their place in it, and learning language and culture. Kids are a work in progress, which is why parenting is ongoing and ever changing. The whole article is at https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/2013/05/11/a-quick-tour-through-the-inner-workings-ofyour-childs-brain/. It’s on again - the 116th Annual Luddenham Show will be held on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of March at Luddenham Showground. Luddenham Show, known as ‘The Country Show,’ is traditionally the first Show in the lead up to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Many, many months of hard work culminate for some of the best livestock and stage acts in Australia. With these ever-changing times, the Committee of Luddenham A.H & I Society are proud to keep the traditions of the district’s biggest annual event alive and well. Both days are ‘chock-a-block’ filled with entertainment and activities for the young, and the not so young alike. This year, they are helping to support those who have lost everything in the recent bush fires. They will be inviting people attending the Show to place donations in boxes, which will be distributed around the Showground. The money will be forwarded to the Rotary Club of Wallacia - Mulgoa Valley and 100 percent will go to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal for distribution to those in the affected areas. Luddenham A.H & I Society will also be donating 5% of the Show profit to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal. New in 2020 is the Wife Carrying Competition, Hay Bale Rolling and Gumboot Throwing. Family Visits Made Friendlier with Prison Playground

A new visits area and playgrounds have opened at Emu Plains Correctional Centre, providing a multi-purpose space for female inmates to connect with their loved ones and Aboriginal culture. The two sections were carefully designed, marrying prison security requirements with Aboriginal themes. Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin said the project was funded by the Federal Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy, which delivers programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a focus on education and employment outcomes. “We encourage inmates to maintain contact with their family and friends as it helps their rehabilitation and can reduce their chances of reoffending” Mr Severin said. “Prison visits areas can be cold and daunting environments, particularly for children, however modern design is enabling us to provide spaces that uphold respect for the custodial setting while also being more comfortable for visitors from the community”. Emu Plains Manager of Security William McPhillips said the minimum-security inmates will also use the space for educational programs and rehabilitation activities. “This transformed area is a quality learning environment for group classes, where women can write, create art and spend time in reflection” Mr McPhillips said. “The design of the space suits women’s particular learning needs and included consultation with an Aboriginal cultural expert to incorporate Indigenous themes, such as local flora, fauna and plant species, artwork and symbols”. McPhillips said the space accommodates different activities and ways for inmates to interact with others at Emu Plains Correctional Centre and the neighbouring Jacaranda Cottages. “For many women, visits from family are the one thing they look forward to and we want to ensure that is a good experience for children, too” Mr McPhillips said. “The redesigned space will help women to build on their life skills, prepare them for life after incarceration and create a smoother transition from prison to life back in the community”. The construction tender for the visits area refurbishment was won by GAPCOMM Interiors, with the works delivered on time by the Infrastructure and Assets Section of Communities and Justice.

Quilters Show They Care The Caring Hearts Community Quilters are a small group of 12 ladies, who usually sew quilts for palliative care patients in their local area. This year, they have turned their attention towards 2 small schools Tooraweenah and Eumungerie, which are in the areas affected by drought. This has included making each child a quilt, a bag with their names embroidered on it that had toys, reading books, school requirements, sporting equipment and lots of other goodies for Christmas. They also helped fund the schools long awaited trip to Sydney. These busy ladies have still managed to make over 200 quilts in the past year. They will be delivered to Nepean, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains Palliative Care patients, Cancer Support and Nepean Children’s Ward. This is after they have been on display at the traditional Airing of the Quilts at Emu Plains. The quilts that they make are not exhibition quilts but show the caring nature of those that make them, and they work hard to maintain a standard that represents the effort, time and love that is stitched into each quilt. As the demand of their quilts grow, they are hoping that any quilters reading this might be interested in making a quilt for them or, better still, joining their group of patch workers. To celebrate their work this year, they will be having a display of quilts. The local group hopes you will come along and support their great efforts.

What Sort Of Exercise May Help Keep Your Joints Fit Strong & Young? A recent patient with extreme right hip pain sparked this article. They’d always had strong legs, because their job, for years, required continual strenuous daily leg exercise, but within a reasonably short time after retirement left hip pain commenced, leading to replacement. Now, 2 years later, debilitating right hip pain began requiring a walking stick. Orthopaedic examination revealed both significant leg muscle volume loss and right hip deterioration. It’s tempting to conclude, that years of hard work wore out the hips. From a different perspective, one might conclude that previous years of hard exercise staved off joint deterioration, and work cessation led to, loss of leg muscle volume and joint deterioration. I lean towards the later view. The patient’s post-retirement exercise pattern included walking regularly and work around their acreage property. So, what constitutes exercise to maintain joint strength and function? The Lambert etal (2008) study shows us. Three 90min sessions weekly for 12 weeks with 1. 15 min of flexibility exercises, 2. 20–30 min of aerobic exercise, 3. 30–40 min of weights, 4. 15 min of balance exercises. improved participants physical function. The aerobic exercises

included • treadmill walking, • step-ups & stair climbing, • stationary cycling, • stairmaster starting at - 75% of peak heart rate, progressed over weeks to 80-90%. Weight-training included squats, leg presses, knee extensions / flexions, seated rowing, upright rowing, seated chest press, biceps curl, and triceps extensions, starting with 1-2 sets at - 65% of one-repetition maximum (1RM), allowing 8–12 repetitions per set. Exercise volume was gradually increased to 2-3 sets at - 80% of 1RM, 6–8 repetitions per set. This program incorporates endurance, strength, flexibility, balance, at stress-levels that continually test participant’s abilities to complete the exercise, yet are within their physical capabilities. Such exercise generates hormonal signals that drive physiology to build/maintain strong yet flexible tissues, staving off muscle & joint deterioration. Many of us walk around the block or work around the yard but these activities, though pleasant and of some benefit, likely do not present nearlyenough stress-challenges to build/maintain strong enough joints and musculature into old age.

THE LAST WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Hello Autumn! As we slide into March we welcome the news that water restrictions will be wound back to level 1. There's no denying we've played witness to nature's wildest extremes, from bushfire to heavy downpours causing floods.......... all within the first 45 days of the year. One can only wonder how the rest of the year will play out. Every month, we receive countless emails and phonecalls from local readers just like you, sharing their thoughts, opinions and feedback about their local Gazette. Just last month, one reader shared "It is wonderful how your publication really supports the community." We'll admit it gives us a good case of the warm fuzzies whenever we hear from you! So, please keep the calls coming, it sure makes our day! Here at the District Gazette 'We Live. Love.Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Why not sit back, have a good read, catch up on all the latest and enjoy 'Your Community News.' 'Whatever you want to do, do it! You only have so many tomorrows".

Belinda
