FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN

Local School Supports Sustainability

Article Written + Submitted by: David Simmons | Assistant Minister | P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

Getting It Right It was the biggest talking point of the 2019 NRL Grand Final. A towering kick ricocheted off a cluster of jumping players and referee Ben Cummins made the wrong call - 6 to go - then, almost instantly, changed his mind and made the right call still last tackle. The post match analysis seemed to focus on the fact he made the wrong call, and ignored the fact that he made the right call in the end. Wouldn’t it be worse if the game were decided by a wrong decision? Isn’t getting it right in the end more important? The apostle Peter made a few wrong calls in his life too. None more famous than the time he told Jesus, the Son of God, that he was wrong. And Jesus famously rebuked him (you can read about it in chapter 8 of Mark’s gospel). Maybe worse than that, he denied he knew Jesus when questioned by a servant girl at Jesus’ trial. Peter was a man who got it wrong, but in the end he got it right. After Jesus rose from the dead he sat down with Peter, forgave him, and charged him to teach his people (you can read about it in John 21). When Peter saw he got it wrong, he quickly got it right and thats the most important thing. We are currently reading through a letter Peter wrote to churches after Jesus resurrection. Through this letter, Peter is doing what Jesus wanted him to do - teach his people. He is teaching them to get Jesus right. He teaches amazing and wonderful truths about Jesus and what his life and death means for us today. You can read 1 Peter for yourself, or come along to church to hear what Peter has to say to us today. We’d love to see you there.

Sustainable living practices have become a focus for learning at Leonay Public School, with the addition of a new garden area complete with worm farms, indigenous edible plants and an outdoor classroom. Initiated as a student welfare project aiming to provide students with more activities that appeal to their interest, it soon became much more. The Sustainability Area features a bush tucker garden which is maintained by all classes at the school. Leonay Public School’s Aboriginal Education Coordinator, Mrs Natalie Devine, said “We are always looking for ways to engage our students in learning about Aboriginal culture and increasing their connection to the school. This was a perfect way to do it”. At present, local Aboriginal artists Trevor Edwards and Jason Douglas from Dalmarri are developing plans for working with students to paint designs on totem poles to be installed in the garden area. One other key aspect that evolved throughout the project was engaging more parents and community groups with the school. Project leader, Mr Adrian Davies, has worked alongside several local businesses and families to landscape and irrigate the area. “The number of parents who have given up their time on weekends and after school to make this happen has been amazing. It has provided an opportunity for many of them to contribute to the school when they may have not felt comfortable to in other ways” he explained. Father of two Leonay Public School students, Daniel Clarke, was one of these parents who spent countless hours coordinating and working on the project using his skills as a landscaper and horticulturist. He said, “It has been a nice way for parents to use their skills in contributing to the school while also doing something that benefits our kids”. The project was largely funded by a grant from Reece Plumbing, which allowed for the area to be fully irrigated from a 1,200L rainwater tank. Students at the school are now learning about being water wise and how to reduce landfill by saving their food scraps and feeding them to the worms. Relieving School Principal, Miss Christine Payne, said “We need to equip our students with an understanding of how their choices directly impact the environment. We will continue to build and develop more garden and sustainability practices at Leonay Public School”. r Leonay Public School’s Sustainability Area | Image Supplied

PROACTIVE PETS WANTED PET CARER Do you LOVE pets? We are looking for a kind-hearted, responsible person to assist us in caring for pets when their pet parents are unable to. Would you like to have a dog stay with you in YOUR home and be paid an incentive for their companionship? If this sounds like you, please contact Proactive pets Now!

CALL Tracey for further information 0419 813 620 Bushcare is a great way to meet people, make new friends, and have fun while improving your local environment in a practical way. Bushcare is Blue Mountains City Council’s program for the restoration of bushland reserves. They assist volunteers in looking after native bush, plant identification, fauna monitoring, weed control and seed collection. Mayor Cr Mark Greenhill said: “Bushcare is a community of more than 400 Blue Mountains people, turning up each month, equating to 1,200 hours of environmental benefit to our future”. There are 60 Bushcare groups across the City, ranging from Lapstone in the lower Blue Mountains to Mount Victoria in the upper Blue Mountains, and across to the basalt-topped Mount Wilson. Under the guidance of a Bushcare Officer, groups remove weeds in a way that helps give native plants the space and opportunity to thrive. There are a wide range of meeting times and days to suit everyone. “There are many benefits of being involved in Bushcare” Cr Greenhill said. “It’s a great way to meet people in your local area, to learn about plants and animals and to develop bush regeneration skills you can use in your own backyard”. “Our Bushcare Officers provide training to volunteers in bush regeneration techniques and safety. We also provide the necessary tools and other equipment for Bushcare groups working on Council land”. Bushcare Officers provide training for all skills levels, with activities tailored to suit your abilities. “By working together in our community, we can achieve outcomes that have enormous benefits to the environment. By joining Bushcare today, you can make a real and positive difference to the future of our unique Blue Mountains wilderness”. Blue Mountains Bushcare Program has its origins in the activities of early Bushcare groups such as Friends of Katoomba Falls Creek Valley, Fairy Dell Restoration Committee, Minnehaha Falls Landcare Group, Glenbrook Lagoon Society and Pope’s Glen Bushcare Group. These groups started in the late 1980s. In response to their activities, Council decided in 1992 to fund a position to coordinate the activities. Since then the number of groups, participants and Bushcare Officers, has steadily increased. No previous experience is necessary for Bushcare, just enthusiasm! The program is family-friendly so bring your kids, friends or even a neighbour to join in. You’ll need a hat, water and suitable clothing and sturdy shoes. A Run for the Community

Need a Real Gardener? (one who prunes, weeds and feeds your garden, but can also mow?)

THEN CALL JOHN 0423 019 053 With Spring well and truly underway and Summer just around the corner, there’s no better time to be out in the great outdoors experiencing the local wonders. The perfect way to take it all in is through exercise. Blue Mountains Running Co and UP Coaching have done just that and come together to offer a social run, held each week on Wednesdays in Glenbrook. The social run began at the same time as the Blue Mountains Running Co, a specialist running store in Glenbrook, opened in March 2017. Owners Shane and Belinda Simpson wanted this to be more than just a retail store, but rather a hub for all runners; trail, road or track of any age, ability or club alliance to meet, connect and enjoy each other’s passion. Shane and Belinda spoke to UP Coaching Head Coach Brendan Davies about the concept. They were thrilled that he shared their vision of a weekly event for our community, and he agreed to co-host the event as a social run which supplemented the more training focused squad sessions he hosts in his regular weekly timetable. “I got together 6 routes of around 5 to 6.5km that all start and finish at BMRC and take in a mixture of trail and road but are achievable for all. I tried to avoid too many hills, though this is a tough ask at Glenbrook! There are also shorter options offered for those new to running or those just wanting to walk” said Brendan Davies of UP Coaching. “These six are rotated throughout the year, and once one full cycle is complete, we reverse the direction of all runs just for extra variety! Our runs take in many of the local trails and reserves such as Darks Common, Tunnel Gully Reserve, Knapsack Reserve, Mt Sion and Glenbrook Nature Reserve” he added. The only required gear for the social run is a headlamp in Winter months (the runs start after sunset) and your running shoes. There’s no cost and they encourage runners to bring their leashed dogs as all the routes are on public streets or through council parks and not through the National Park. “A night at our group run demonstrates the importance of community. We all lead very busy lives, but it’s amazing to think that this large group put aside this time each week to be healthy, to be social and to enjoy the huge health benefits that running provides. We cater to all levels; it is very inclusive and very friendly! We provide online links to maps as well as paper maps and have a tail walker making sure nobody gets left behind. At the conclusion, we provide drinks and have a group BBQ once a month. Quite often we will have special guests such as brand ambassadors or trail running identities come in and give a talk or activation” ended Brendan. The social run meets at Blue Mountains Running Co/2773 Glenbrook at 5:50pm for a 6:00pm start every Wednesday. r Feature Article: [Cover] Runners gather at BMRC [Above] UP Coaching’s Brendan Davies with his dog Frankie during a run | Images Supplied by Brendan Davies

Great Achievement Cottage Preschool

for

Alasan

Alasan Cottage Preschool, located in Glenbrook, has been awarded “Exceeding Level Rating” from The Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority. “It comes with great pride to accept this great achievement, as Alasan Cottage Preschool is a small 20 place Preschool which offers a home like learning environment for children between the ages of 3 to 6 years” said Vicki Skoulogenis, Director/Owner. They recently updated their outdoor environment with a more realistic and natural backyard, featuring an amazing branch style teepee with a jetty and winding crazing paving pathway. This included a grand stage, boat structure and cubbyhouse. All materials were ethically sourced, and all Australian wood used. The gardens were planted with all Australian native species with texture, colour and shape to allow the children to explore and care for all year round. Native bees are being introduced also to educate the children the importance that bees have in our environment. The backyard now complements their indoor environment, which allows the children to prepare for lifelong learning and to bridge the gap between Preschool and Primary School. They are currently taking enrolments for 2020 and are happy to take families around for a personal tour at your time of convenience. Alasan Cottage Preschool is open all year round (except for 4-week Christmas closure) and parents can access the Child Care Benefit from Centrelink. Locals Compete at NSWVGA State Medal The Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association (WSRVGA) sent four representatives to Port Macquarie last month, to compete in the inaugural NSWVGA State Medal. The leading golfers from all active groups/regions were invited to send their leading male and female players to compete in the prestigious event. The WSRVGA is Group 20 and its representatives were brothers Peter Cromer (Wallacia CC) and Steve Cromer (Leonay GC), along with Sue Evers (Springwood CC) and Carol Carter (Richmond GC). Evers would carry all before her in the Ladies Division, finishing at the top of the leaderboard on both days and taking out the Medal with a 7-shot margin on the field. With players restricted to receiving just one major prize in the event, Carter would claim victory on Day Two and sixth overall. In the Men's division, Peter Cromer played solidly on both days to secure overall third spot, whilst brother Steve finished out of the placings. r Peter Cromer (Wallacia CC) and Steve Cromer (Leonay GC) | Image: Carol Cromer. The Lions Club of Emu Plains plus undesignated funds from the Richmond and Penrith Lions Clubs, have sponsored the purchase of a Large Rifton Pacer Gait Trainer Walker, valued at $6,975 for Noor of Whalan. This walker for Noor, a 5-year old boy, is required as Noor has a rare syndrome known as L1 Syndrome, meaning he is unable to stand independently and requires supportive seating. Noor's ability to independently interact and explore his environment is currently limited by the fact that he can only crawl for short distances and he does not have access to equipment which would enable him to navigate his surroundings whether that is at school, home or in the community. The purchase was organised through the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation (ALCMF), which forms part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest community service group. ALCMF Trustees are all members of Lions Australia and Volunteers. Greg English, the District Chair of ALCMF, said “We empower children who cannot walk unassisted to reach their potential. We do this by facilitating the funding of walking devices that get kids out of their wheelchairs and onto their feet so that they are able to walk, explore, play, work and socialise. This makes them stronger and healthier - physically, emotionally and mentally. Walking is our gift to the child, a gift that benefits the child, their family and friends. Our on-going goal is to provide a walker to every child in Australia who needs one. Hence our motto; May every child walk with pride”. The walker was fitted on Friday 20th September at Noor’s home at Whalan, with representatives from the Lions Club of Emu Plains plus Greg English from ALCMF and Haley Cane of Lifestart physiotherapy to witness Cameron Brown of Astris PME to ‘fit and handover' the walker to Noor and his Mum, Kamilia.

KOBHI'S KITCHEN

Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi

Ko's Cottage Pie

Ingredients

550gm Beef Mince 1 Onion - Diced 1 Cup Frozen Mixed Veggies 1 440g can Tomato Soup 1 440g Can Diced or Crushed Tomatoes 1 Tbs Tomato Paste 1 Cup Beef Stock 4 Medium Potatoes 1 Tbs Butter 100ml Milk Salt + Pepper to taste Method

1. Ask your adult helper to turn the oven on at 180 degrees or 150 degrees (fan forced). 2. Your adult helper needs to cook the mince and the onion in the frypan, until brown. 3. Add the frozen veggies now (my brother doesn't like these, but he just picks them out). 4. Add the tomato soup, diced tomatoes and beef stock. With your adult helper, cook on a low heat until it thickens and is not too saucy! 5. Let the mince mixture sit to cool. 6. The next step for your helper is to peel and dice the potatoes and boil them in a pot until soft. 7. Drain the water from the potatoes, add the butter and milk, mash them until smooth. 8. Grease a small oven proof tray; add the mince mixture and top with the potato mixture. 9. Ask your adult helper to place the dish in the oven for 35 minutes or until brown on top. 10. Ready to serve.

In the Spirit of Support! Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. This scarring makes the lungs stiff which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. This slows the efficient delivery of oxygen into the bloodstream where it is needed to be transported to the rest of the body. Idiopathic, suggests ‘no known cause’ and currently there is no cure for those suffering with IPF. The District Gazette is proud to be hosting Supper with Spirit, with all proceeds donated directly to Lung Foundation Australia. (See ad above for all the details). Highly acclaimed and much sought after psychic medium Ghost Whisperer Suzie will feature at the event. There will be a delicious 3 course cocktail dinner that is sure to delight at the beautifully appointed Settlers Mulgoa. Raffles and a silent auction will be held on the night, with over $2,000 in prizes. Proudly supported by Citadines Connect Sydney Airport, The Day Spa Penrith – Jorja James Spa, Salt Therapy Wellness Centre, Emu Wellness, NIX on Park Lane Jewelry, Elsker Oils with Julie, Aussie Grown Catering, Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow, Our Penrith, Lavilin Australia, Michelle Munday (Lorraine Lea Independent Stylist), Essential Bodyworks and Action Organising. Mountains of Talent

Glenbrook - Blaxland Cricket Club have taken to the 2019/2020 season with high hopes, thanks to success on the pitch last year. The local club saw 6 Senior teams play in the finals and their Thunder Girls Cricket League team winning their Grand Final and included a premiership in the Winter cricket competition. This season sees them bolstered with 115 players over 10 teams in the Juniors and 127 over 7 teams in the Seniors. With Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins and Sydney Sixers’ Jordan Silk coming through the junior ranks, it’s an exciting club to be a part of. “I’m looking forward to watching the development of the kids and hopefully growing the numbers involved in playing. We have a mainly father and son team in 9th Grade that is captained by a great young bloke named Matt, who himself is only in his second year of Senior’s cricket. The rest of the sons in the team all still qualify in the Under 16’s competition but have stepped up into Seniors to have the opportunity to play with their dads” said Richard Minton, President of Glenbrook - Blaxland Cricket Club. The Australian Cricket team’s recent series win against England in The Ashes was spearheaded by Cummins and the club is proud of their local hero. “I think it is great that Pat has acknowledged his roots and it shows kids that the dream of playing for Australia is not impossible. With Pat being such a popular member of the Australian Cricket team, it has drawn people into wanting to play for the club as has been shown by the increase in team numbers in both Juniors and Seniors” explained Richard. “I’m in admiration of the people involved with our club and the tireless work that they do. Whether it be our Senior or Junior Vice Presidents, our Committee, the Coaches, Managers, parents or volunteers - everyone is working towards the common goal of the growth and enjoyment of the game” he ended. r Sydney Sixers’ Jordan Silk started at the club | Image Supplied by Glenbrook – Blaxland Cricket Club

Exercise May Help Overcome Your Bad Genes and Age-Related Decline My August article hinted that your genes don’t determine the person you become. Diet and exercise, have huge positive influences even if you have poor genetics. Let’s illustrate this. ‘mtDNA-mutator’ mice have ‘really bad’ genes. They accumulate 3-5 times as many mitochondrial DNA mutations as wild type mice in equivalent time. This leads to: • mitochondrial dysfunction (in biogenesis & fission), • excessive free radical production • oxidative stress & damage to cells • accelerated body cell death rates • loss of cell reserve (aging). This loss of cell reserve (fewer properly-working body cells) leads these mice to suffer from ‘progeria’, a disorder with profound premature aging and early death. Like old people these mice have reduced fertility, muscle loss (sarcopenia) and subcutaneous fat loss, hair loss, curved spines, osteoporosis, anaemia, heart enlargement, and they get all these things very early in life. Key is that their mitochondria malfunction first, well before the appearance of the actual signs of aging. Can anything delay this onset of mitochondrial changes and thus aging? Experiments by Safdar etal in 2011 using mtDNA-mutator’

mice, demonstrated how regular endurance exercise can help even these genetically challenged mice. They showed ‘that 5 months of endurance exercise induced systemic mitochondrial biogenesis, prevented mitochondrial DNA deletions and mutations, increased mitochondrial energy production capacity, restored mitochondrial structure, and blunted pathological levels of’ cell death ‘in multiple tissues of the mtDNA mutator mice. All this conferred complete protection from progeria, ‘multisystem pathology, and prevented premature mortality in these mice’. In short, the regular endurance exercise was able to overcome the severe genetic defects that these mice had. The authors concluded that, ‘the systemic mitochondrial rejuvenation through endurance exercise promises to be an effective therapeutic approach to mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and related comorbidities’ (i.e. diseases). Most of us will not have to overcome such severe genetic defects. For many of us, our lack of exercise will be the key contributor to the mitochondrial dysfunction that occurs in our tissues well before we see our outer signs of aging, including muscle loss. While, appropriate regular endurance exercise may be a key preventer of our age-related decline, and quicken response to therapy.
