FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister | P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

Doctor Dies for Patient’s Cure Have you ever visited the doctor thinking things were OK, only to learn you had a serious illness? It’s happened to friends of mine, and in my family, and it’s devastating. It can feel so confronting having something wrong with your own body, and not even realising it, let alone having to deal with it. Now did you know Jesus once described himself as a doctor. It was on a day when he’d asked a tax collector to become his follower. But he didn’t stop there. He went and had lunch with him, and his friends. The religious leaders who thought they knew God disapproved. And do you know what Jesus said when they questioned him? ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners’ (Mark 1:17). Jesus point? We all have a serious condition, a condition that needs to be treated, a condition that is ultimately fatal. He’s not talking about a sickness, but our separation from God, and being disconnected from the purpose he gave us, to love him, and love others (Mark 12:29-31). Everyone has it, but not everyone recognises it. In fact, Jesus is saying the people most blind to it are the people that think God owes them something. The good news? Jesus doesn’t just diagnose it, he cures it! He tells us he came to die in our place (Mark 10:45). He’s the doctor who dies to cure us, all he expects is for us to trust our lives to him. If you’d like to find out more about him, check out our website or come to one of our activities.

Bruce a True Inspiration When it comes to life in retirement, Emu Plains author Bruce Turner AM has rewritten the book! In his first decade of retirement, Bruce has authored over 30 publications (books, white papers, practice guides, guidelines, and articles) and coauthored a further dozen. Adding to this is Bruce’s latest book, titled ‘New Auditor’s Guide to Internal Auditing’, which was published by the Internal Audit Foundation (USA) in April this year. With more than 40 years of experience working in internal auditing across the globe, Bruce’s latest book is the first he has written solely by himself. According to the publisher, the Internal Audit Foundation (USA), New Auditor’s Guide to Internal Auditing incorporates insights, stories, and tips covering the “who, why, how, when, what, and where” of internal auditing for new auditors in their first two years in the profession. It also caters to educators and others who support internal audit, such as engineers, lawyers, and health professionals. In addition, it provides team leaders and chief audit executives with contemporary tools to assist in training new recruits. “Within a few years, 1 in 4 baby boomers in the internal auditing profession across the world are expected to retire. Given they make up a high proportion of the internal audit workforce and have extensive experience they will leave a void. New internal auditors will come into the profession, and they will need guidance on what to expect and how to perform at a high level; this book does that” said Bruce to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Bruce recently attended the international conference for internal auditors in Anaheim in the USA, where he spoke about insights contained in the book and hosted a book signing. His speaking engagements have taken him to major financial centres like London and Singapore through to South Pacific nations like Fiji. Turner has completed the manuscript for his next book, titled ‘Team Leaders Guide to Internal Audit Leadership’, which is aimed at equipping internal audit leaders with the skills they need in a rapidly changing business world. “Writing gives me the opportunity to share my stories with the next generation/s of business leaders, to equip them with the skills they need to survive and flourish in a business world that is constantly changing. By doing so, it helps me to do my bit in helping to make the world a better place” he ended. r Bruce at an international conference in Anaheim (USA) getting ready for a book signing this year | Image Supplied

Most filmmakers dream of one day having their films shown in Hollywood. For Glenbrook filmmaker Rebekah Jackson, that dream became a reality, with her short film ‘For The Girl In The Coffee Shop’ having it’s world premiere at Dances With Films in Hollywood in July, before being shown at the prestigious gala night at CinéfestOz at Busselton in Western Australia soon after. The short film, which was written and directed by Rebekah, first came to life last year whilst she was overseas. She explained, “I started writing the short in May of last year. I was in LA at the time and went to one of those funky cafes there full of writers tapping away on their laptops. I figured their creativity would rub off on me, but when I got to the café, I realised almost everyone was on Twitter or Facebook”. “Nevertheless, it got me thinking about how we imagine the lives of the stranger we see regularly but do not know. That’s what the film is about, an illustrator who has written a book imagining the life of a girl he sees at the coffee shop. We see the very amusing collision of fantasy and reality” added Rebekah. The experience of having her film premiere in Hollywood at Dances With Films is one that Rebekah won’t forget in a hurry. “It was very surreal! Prior to the premiere in Hollywood, the most people who had watched the film at any one time was 20 people at a family lunch. It was quite daunting screening my very first film to nearly 500 people when you only know 5 people in the audience, but it made it more rewarding when the audience erupted in laughter. I made the film hoping people would connect to it and really delight in it, so it was extremely validating when strangers from the other side of the world did” she said. Rebekah is also currently writing her first feature film. It’s a coming of age story based on para swimmer Ella Jones’ journey to find swimming as a rebellious teenager. To stay up to date with news on ‘For The Girl In The Coffee Shop’, follow the film on Instagram and Facebook. r Director Rebekah Jackson and 1st Assistant Director Ethan Thomas on the set of For the Girl in the Coffee Shop | Image: Gemma Farebrother

River of Dreams With Spring in the air, it’s that perfect time of the year for the local community to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors, including the Nepean River. Many of us take the Great River Walk, relax and take in the scenery on the Nepean Belle or just have a BBQ with family and friends on the nearby banks. For Emu Heights photographer Brett Pascoe, it’s also the ideal location to capture our river in all its beauty. “The Nepean River is a great place. It has a wide variety of elements to take photos of, whether it’s the river itself, wildlife or the activity on the water and let’s not forget the bridges. I love the fact that my son Noah, who is 12, is getting a taste for photography too. I suppose its family and nature that draws me to these places” explained Brett to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. The talented local’s work has been recognised, with Brett winning the Penrith City Council Bragging Rights Photography Competition in 2017. He also placed third that year in the Open Category of the Penrith City Council Environmental Photo Competition with his stunning landscape photograph titled ‘Golden Nepean’. “I do have work with photography, but it’s quite random and I would love to do it fulltime one day. I’ve done work for the local council and a few PR companies. I’ve just donated some photos to the new Cancer Ward at the Nepean Hospital too” Brett said “I work for Lion Dairy in Penrith and I am lucky that they encourage my creativity with photos and videos in my project work. I would love for National Geographic to ring and say here’s a bag of money, go to this island, take photos of everything and see you in a month!” he added. The next time you pick up your camera, whether it’s by the Nepean River or even in the bush of the Blue Mountains, Brett has these words of advice, “Photograph what makes you happy. Learn as much as you can but be yourself and own your own style. Don’t over think it and enjoy what you do”.

New Cricket Nets for Community

Need a Real Gardener? (one who prunes, weeds and feeds your garden, but can also mow?)

THEN CALL JOHN 0423 019 053 Winter sleep is over, Spring has come full of colour and new life The Emu Plains Cricket Club (EPCC) has just completed the rebuild of the cricket nets at Leonay Public School. The project, partially funded under the NSW Government Sport and Recreation communities funding grant, improved the safety of the nets and ensured the alignment with the Cricket Australia Outdoor Training Facilities Guidelines. The nets provide a safe training environment for all players and coaches of Emu Plains Cricket Club and will ensure the nets and surrounds are accessible and safe for all users, passers-by and surrounding properties. EPCC would like to thank Ms Christine Payne (Principal) and the Leonay Public School community for the ongoing access to the nets and trust that all are very pleased with the new nets, which will be utilised by the students of the school as well. The project could not have been completed without the extremely generous support of Ange Barbaro and Metwest Engineering, who provided the materials and labour to complete the project within budget. Emu Plains Cricket Club President, Sam Barbaro commented "The Cricket Club is very happy that this project has been completed. The nets are a fantastic community asset and all players of EPCC are very much looking forward to training at the new venue. Thanks to Christine Payne and the school for their support throughout the project". Leonay Public School Principal, Ms Christine Payne said "The staff and students of Leonay Public School would like to thank the EPCC for their dedication and support in completing this fantastic project. The new cricket nets are not only a valuable resource for the school but for the whole Leonay and Emu Plains communities". r The newly rebuilt nets at Leonay Public School | Image/Article: Emu Plains Cricket Club

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Developing a Positive Relationship with your Child Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in. I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child. No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids can look angry or overly independent. Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. Having a relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent. I reckon that building a relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on the relationship instead, and see how that changes things. So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child? Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like put-downs, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship killers. Dr Robyn Dolby also uses the rope metaphor to explain how parents relate to their children. She says that if your child is used to being out on the end of the rope most of the time, then you need to reel the rope IN very slowly. The same can be said for children who have been kept too close and too controlled (over protected) or kids who experience anxiety. You need to let the rope OUT very slowly, so they don’t get scared. Relationship. It is essential to growing strong, resilient, healthy, and happy humans.

Chocolate Wheel Rolls Out Result for Hospital The Lions Club of Emu Plains, in conjunction with the Australian Lions Foundation, have provided three new recliner chairs for the discharge lounge of the Emergency Department at Nepean Hospital. The chairs cost $5,472 for the three, with the Club raising half and the Australian Lions Foundation matching them dollar for dollar. The chairs will not only provide comfort for those patients undergoing treatment at the Emergency Department, they will also allow the Department to be more efficient in their handling of the discharge of patients. The chairs were supplied by Dalcross Medical Equipment, an Australian company. Emu Plains Lions Club President, Alan Cooper said, “It’s a donation we were able to make because of the support provided by the local community at the Chocolate Wheel held at Westfield Penrith each Saturday. We have also previously supported the Cancer Care Centre at Nepean Hospital with two Oncology Treatment chairs in February 2018, again with assistance from ALF”. Australian Lions Foundation District Chairman Steve Holley added, “The Foundation helps Lions Clubs in Australia to build and deliver great humanitarian results for local communities”. r Lions Club help patients | Image Supplied by NSW Government Health – Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District

New Multi-Purpose Hardcourt for EPPS Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith recently joined students, teachers and P&C representatives at Emu Plains Public School (EPPS) to open their new multi-purpose court made possible with a grant of $130,000 through the NSW Government’s 2018 round of the Community Building Partnership program. Stuart Ayres said this fantastic new court now offers kids a space for hard surface sports like basketball, netball and handball. "The Community Building Partnerships are a terrific program that provides the opportunity for local community groups such as youth, sporting, hobby groups and Council's to build, refurbish or maintain much needed infrastructure that will benefit the local community" Stuart Ayres said Alicia Pullen, President of the EPPS P&C said, “On behalf of the P&C, I would like to thank Stuart Ayres for supporting Emu Plains Public School with these funds to start our playground transformation”. “Our P&C is dedicated to working with our school to provide the best possible opportunities and environments for our children and this generosity has not only changed the landscape of our school it is greatly appreciated by our parent community. We love our new multi court!” Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government’s strong economic management ensures we are in a position to invest in important local projects such as this. KOBHI'S KITCHEN

Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi

Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

Ingredients

600ml of cream One can of condensed milk One teaspoon of vanilla essence Five chocolate cookies Method

1. Your adult helper needs to beat the cream with a mixer until it starts to get thick (Mum calls that thicken). 2. Add the vanilla essence and beat it until a lightly whipped cream is made. This is another step for your helper. 3. Add the condensed milk. Make sure you keep beating it until it starts to get thick and turns into a nice cream. 4. Crush the cookies. This is my favourite step! Try not to eat the cookies ; ) 5. The next step for your helper is to keep beating the cream and to add the cookies (Yummo) 6. Pour all the ingredients into a container that has a lid on it to seal it. Put it into the freezer until it goes hard. We made the ice cream at night and put it in the freezer overnight for about 8 hours. 7. Ready to serve.

Murphy and McKeown Complete the Double Leonay Golf Club staged the Final of both the Division One and Division Two Foursomes Match-Play Championships last month, with both games going down to the wire for results. Brendan McKeown (Leonay) and Gary Murphy (Lapstone) were the dominant pairing in Division Two from the start of the Foursomes season, scoring a runaway win in the Stroke-Play Championships, then seeing off all contenders to also claim the Match-Play title. Match-Play runners-up Michael Cusack and Michael McCormick had finished in 7th spot in the Stroke-Play Championships, but revelled in the Match-Play format, belying their low ranking to reach the Final. Cusack and McCormick led early in the Final, but a late rally by McKeown and Murphy would see them ultimately grab the Division Two Match-Play title with a 2 and 1 victory.

Exercise – How it protects Mitochondria and prevents Muscle Loss with Aging Mitochondria are tiny bacteria, that billions of years ago invaded the cells of our ancient ancestor’s. They directly or indirectly, power everything that happens inside our cells. Their number per cell is a measure of cellular health. Reduced levels underlie age-related muscle loss & debility, while highermitochondria-levels help ensure muscle: 1. Volume, 2. Health, 3. Ability to respond to therapy The young (on average) respond to therapy faster. Given that mitochondrial number and activity declines with age, an ‘age related’ decline in people’s ability to respond to therapy seems self-evident, right? Wrong. It doesn’t need to be so. A key for maintaining healthy muscle mitochondria with age is regular exercise. Terjung etal (2002), state that far from being a natural outcome of aging, reduced mitochondrial number & loss of muscle mass and function is more likely due to the fact that, as we get older, we become sedentary. Research shows that: 1. Lifelong endurance training attenuates decline in both pumping efficiency and cardiac output of blood 2. Exercise robustly increases building of new blood capillaries in muscle of older people

3. This increased ‘capillarity’ allows an increase in oxygen uptake of active muscle by 25% 4. Exercise sends hormonal signals to muscle. This results in significant increases in muscle cell mitochondrial content in older people. These new mitochondria are the end users of the oxygen for ATP production 5. Together the improvement in blood & oxygen delivery capacity combined with greater mitochondrial numbers, allows the production of significantly more ATP 6. This ensures great muscle power in every muscle cell during exercise 7. This mitochondrial capacity stays with us after exercise. So, during periods of rest in between bouts of training, muscles now have much-improved blood flow and nutrient and oxygen delivery, and greater energy production capacities, allowing highly efficient: a. repair of any tissue damage done during exercise, b. building of new muscle cells & connective tissue c. day to day function (including cell maintenance) d. improved healing capacity Again, it is easy to see why people who exercise heal more quickly. Exercise lowers inflammation both locally in muscle tissue and systemically. We will discuss this next month.

Tonic immobility is a natural state of paralysis in animals that is brought on by knismesis, i.e. low levels of rubbing or tickling. Whoa! Hit the handbrake. Here we are in October already. The month where we’re greeted with another set of school holidays and dare I say it, the month where we begin to lay out our plans for Christmas and the New Year! Here at the District Gazette we are passionate about raising funds and awareness of rare lung diseases. Many of these are terminal with no treatment available. We’d like to see more research, treatment and in a perfect world, a cure so that those afflicted no longer suffer in silence. Hand in hand with the Lung Foundation we’re hosting a Fundraising ‘Supper with Spirit’ and would love for you to join us! See page 8 for all the details. Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Do more of what makes you happy’.
