FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister | P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

Turning Lives Around Have you heard of Copernicus? He’s famous for turning the world on its head by his discovery. Up until the sixteenth century everyone believed the sun and the planets circled around the earth. It was self-evident, and no one ever questioned it. But Copernicus came to an astounding alternative - it’s the other way around - the earth and planets rotate around the sun! Now until then people’s understanding of themselves, of their world, even of God – put them in the centre of the galaxy. So this was a revolution. Now, when we talk about something as a ‘Copernican revolution’ we’re capturing the effect it had, harking back to the importance of his world changing discovery. Maybe somewhere along the way you’ve had your own Copernican revolution? Did you know back in the first century Jesus brought his own Copernican revolution? When his disciples discovered he was God’s promised King they thought he’d take up his throne in Jerusalem, get rid of the Romans, rule the world, and they’d be caught up in the ride, and bathe in his glory. So you could imagine how confused they were when he told them that he would rule by suffering, dying and rising. He was turning all their expectations about himself on their head. We’re reading about it in Mark chapters 9 to 11 in church right now. Not everyone has put their trust in Jesus, but we still value service and servant leadership, and putting others before ourselves. And that’s a change Jesus brought. But when we come to grips with how much we need Jesus to die and rise for us, and that he did, he brings an even greater revolution into our lives too, even bigger than the revolution of Copernicus.

Blue Mountains Art Prize a Success The 2019 Blue Mountains Art Prize, which was held last month, attracted a large enthusiastic crowd with standing room only. It was the second year for the Art Prize, with 60 entries across a wide range of mediums including painting, drawing, pottery, mosaics, embroidery and print making. The Blue Mountains Art Prize originated in 2018 under the auspices of the Blue Mountains Creative Art Centre (BMCAC) to encourage artists, emerging and established, to exhibit their work in a welcoming community environment. The event was held in the Centre’s newly renovated main building on the corner of Hare and Moore Streets in Glenbrook. This year’s Major Prize was awarded to artist Joy Myers Creed for her hand-painted Solar Etching “Precious”. Joy is the coordinator of BMCAC’s Life Drawing group and an awarded artist across a range of mediums. Joy’s creations along with fellow artists’ work will also be on display and for sale at the Life Drawing and Painting Exhibition over the weekend of 20th to 22nd September in Glenbrook Theatre’s side hall. Prizes were also awarded to Christine Stickley (Barbara Dahl Prize), Kathleen Kennedy (Roy Brook Prize), Susan Rumming (Sadie Foster Prize), Jack Buckley (Highly Commended) and Paul Gorjan, (Commended). An inaugural “Builders’ Prize” was awarded to Alison Shore for her pottery entry. David Russell, one of their builder volunteers, presented the award as a tongue in cheek reference to the Archibald’s “Packer Prize”. The Children’s Prize was awarded to Melody Knight, second to Amber Elliot and third to Margaret Claridge. The BMCAC would like to thank the sponsors - Anala Art Advisory (major sponsor), the Hon. Stuart Ayres (MP for Penrith), Susan Templeman (Federal MP for Macquarie), Picture Framing Warehouse and Eckersleys. The Prize was judged by ceramic artist Robert Linigen (2018 winner) and Kelly Heylen, Platform Gallery. Gift Wrapping Sydney’s West Transport for NSW has collaborated with local Sydney artists to give a new look to traffic signal boxes across several suburbs in western Sydney. Transport for NSW Director of Sydney Maintenance, David Fishburn said in Parramatta, Liverpool, Blacktown, Penrith and Albury newly designed artwork has been created and printed onto vinyl wraps to spruce up the traffic signal boxes at key intersections and beautify the area. “In partnership with local councils, we have successfully installed 150 wraps on traffic signal boxes across western Sydney,” Mr Fishburn said. “It was a team effort from all involved and Transport for NSW is proud to have played an integral part in the initiative’s success. “The wraps have been designed to celebrate the unique characteristics of each local area for community members and commuters to admire.” Mr Fishburn said historical photographs, aboriginal art and aerial land shots are some of the designs featured on these wraps. “The project serves a dual purpose; it is a unique platform for local artists to display their art and aims to reduce the level of graffiti at these recurring vandalised intersections. Blue Mountains Student's Book now Stocked at Library

Blue Mountains student Oliver Smuhar is a young writer with big ambitions. His first book, The Gifts of Life, has now made it onto the shelves of Blue Mountains Library, while the 18-yearold has already penned his second novel and is working on a third. Oliver, from Blaxland, wrote The Gifts of Life while studying for his HSC at St Columba's Catholic College, Springwood, finding at least one hour each night to write after his homework. “It was difficult at times, but I never once thought of writing as a chore or as a type of study” said Oliver. “It's—for me— more of a leisure I enjoy, like watching Netflix in my free time”. The dedication paid off, with the book published last year and available to purchase from local bookshops, The Turning Page in Springwood and Blue Dragon Books, Glenbrook, as

well as online. Now The Gifts of Life can be borrowed from Blue Mountains Library, after Oliver, contacted Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill for a university project. Cr Greenhill offered to help the young writer with promotion of his book. “As a City of the Arts Council, we love to see local writers succeeding” said Cr Greenhill. “And students like Oliver are an inspiration to other young people in the Blue Mountains”. Oliver said, “When a librarian replies with the good news of my book being ordered and accepted for their shelves, it really makes me want to continue what I am doing and improve my craft, write better stories and market more to the world around me. “My debut is really a story about identity and what it is that makes people individuals” he said. “Although set in a world that is a complete modern fantasy, where animals talk, cities are built on giants’ backs and where everyone has a unique ability or power, I really wrote this Young Adult’s epic—and am continuing it—to create a world where people can lose themselves and learn important contemporary morals, like that it’s okay to be weird!” Oliver, now a Communications student at the University of Technology Sydney, is currently writing a sequel to The Gifts of Life. He is also seeking a traditional publisher for his second completed novel, Cold Hands. He describes this book as “a more down to earth Australian drama that takes place here in the Mountains”. PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Are you an Angry Parent? It seems that every day, we are reminded of how people are becoming more intolerant, aggressive, and unkind. The other day, a young fella in a car behind me was becoming impatient at my persistence to stick to the speed limit. He sped around me, ran a red light, and nearly collected a pedestrian on the bonnet of his car. I caught up with him at the next traffic light. Was it really necessary to become so aggressive and impatient? Anger is a normal human emotion. It is not ‘bad’. However, sometimes we make poor choices when we are angry. Sustained anger is no good for you or anybody else. The stress and strain that anger causes in your brain and body affects your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and it damages relationships. Children learn from our example. When we yell or hit, children learn that yelling or hitting is the way to manage conflict. Children are not born with conflict resolution skills. They learn them from us, which means we have to teach conflict resolution skills to our kids and more importantly we have to role model them. Most child behaviour does not require an immediate response from you. You can take the time to centre yourself by breathing and grounding yourself before you choose to respond (rather than react). If your child is about to walk in front of a car or hit her brother on the head with a truck, feel free to react quickly, but this doesn't need to be done in a mean or aggressive way either. The skills that all humans need to learn to get along better with others includes: managing strong emotions; calming down; assertiveness; and problem solving. If you are really struggling with strong emotions, I have started a Mindful Parenting series on the blog https:// handshear tsminds.wordpress.com/categor y/mindfulparenting/

Does My Child Need Tutoring? The question of whether you should get tutoring for your child is not able to be answered with a stock response. Not every child will benefit from tutoring and certainly not from some styles; however, many children thrive with tutoring as it can provide the key to confidence and ‘fill in the gaps’ within their learning. Often the term tutoring is used interchangeably with coaching. Whilst this is widely accepted, coaching generally refers to repetitive or drill learning with the intention of gaining achievement in a test or assessment, whereas tutoring is more remedial and focused on bridging a gap in learning. Tutoring is also great for students who enjoy learning and want to extend their thinking laterally, especially in Mathematics. If your child is struggling with confidence in an area, then tutoring is something you could consider. If your child seems to really be struggling academically at school then tutoring can make a positive impact; however, it is important to look at other factors first before taking the tutoring route. Speak to your child’s teacher about specific difficulties and whether the school can address them adequately. Some specific difficulties are best treated by an occupational therapist (OT), a psychologist, speech therapist or doctor. If these needs are not addressed, tutoring can often appear ineffective. Depending on where you access your tutoring, you can expect different approaches. Large franchises may have set programs they implement, and smaller businesses or individuals may offer personalised services based on the individual needs of the student. Some tutoring companies only offer group programs whilst others provide a one-to-one service. Most students flourish with personalised instruction in a one-to-one setting with a tutor who is knowledgeable and experienced, but this will generally incur a higher cost than tutoring in a small group led by a university student. When choosing a tutor, think about which approach suits your child best and be sure to ask questions. Tutoring should be a collaboration towards meeting your child’s individual needs. For more information about tutoring, visit edUcatered on Facebook or www.educatered.com.au. r Tutoring can help your child to gain confidence and understanding. KOBHI'S KITCHEN

Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi

dad's green chicken pasta

Ingredients

One packet of spinach fettuccine (500g) 500g of boneless chicken breast One cup of cream Three tablespoons of fresh basil pesto One tablespoon of olive oil Method

1. Your adult helper needs to boil a pot of water. Once the pot is hot, they can add the packet of spinach fettuccine. 2. My Mum does the next step too. She cuts up the chicken breast into strips. Next, she adds the olive oil to a pan and then cooks the chicken breast. The chicken breast is cooked until it is brown or as Mum says ‘golden’ 3. Add three tablespoons of fresh basil pesto to the chicken in the pan. Make sure the chicken is covered all over with the pesto. I love the smell of pesto! 4. Pour one cup of cream into the pan and mix it with the pesto and the chicken. Let it bubble for a bit. I think they call that simmering. 5. The spinach fettuccine should be ready now. Drain the water. Mum puts it in one of those things with holes in it to help it drain. 6. Add the spinach fettuccine to the chicken and mix it. 7. Ready to Serve

New Online System Takes Stress Out of Finding a JP An online Justice of the Peace register has been upgraded to make it easier for people to find a JP when they need one. “There are over 95,000 JPs covering all corners of the state – yet tracking one down in urgent situations can be challenging” said Attorney General Mark Speakman. “The revamped register will solve this problem by enabling JPs to include the dates and times they’re available, in addition to their contact details. “For JPs, it will mean fewer unwanted disruptions, while people who need a document witnessed or certified quickly will no longer have to waste time calling JPs – only to discover they’re on holidays or busy”. The improved register also assists culturally and linguistically diverse communities, by enabling people to search for a local JP who speaks a particular language. The new-look register began operating in early 2019. JPs act as independent and objective witnesses to documents people need for a variety of purposes. Their main functions are to witness affidavits and statutory declarations, and they may also certify copies of original documents. JPs provide their services on a voluntary basis. Since the commemorative certificates were introduced in 2012, 2979 Justices of the Peace have been recognised for 50 years of service. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Why People Who Exercise May Respond Better To Treatment (Part 2 Increased Blood Flow) Last month we saw how lymphatic waste removal benefits your tissues ability to heal. Exercise stimulates efficient removal of biological waste products via the lymphatic vessels, so that cells find themselves in a clean environment, free to respond optimally to therapy, which means healing is usually quicker. Exercise provides additional benefits by increasing delivery of blood to all organs involved in sustaining exercise. For example: 1. To the brain for coordinated movement; 2. to the lungs to oxygenate blood; 3. to the heart to help pump oxygenated blood; 4. to the muscles to sustain movement. Exercise does this by: 1. increasing heart rate and contraction-force which increases blood pressure in order to pump more blood to organs 2. activating reflexes that increase artery & capillary diameter maximising blood delivery efficiency 3. increasing the rate at which nutrient and oxygen rich fluids are filtered from the blood through capillary walls into the tissue space. All this leads to increased delivery of nutrients to tissues during exercise to feed the cells, while simultaneously forcing waste-laden tissue fluids out into lymph vessels & veins, thus

cleaning tissues. More importantly, exercise leads to a tissue response called ‘adaption’, during which muscle & other tissue cells increase their production (inside cells) of: 1. classical antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase & glutathione peroxidase making cells more resistant to oxidative stress 2. heat shock proteins that help ensure structural & enzyme proteins inside cells remain correctly folded & functional under high-stress conditions meaning cells become harder to damage 3. mitochondria, which power every process inside muscle and other cells. More mitochondria mean better cell function, damage resistance, and post damage repair – in short tissues heal more quickly. Finally exercise training induces considerable blood vessel remodelling, developing new arteries and capillaries for muscle and other tissues which likely lead to improved organ blood flow & long term functional improvements of these tissues. In short, the capacity of various tissues (including muscle) to resists stress and to repair more efficiently is much improved. Again, it’s easy to see why people who exercise more often respond more quickly to therapy.

For further information or to submit a nomination please visit: www.women.nsw.gov.au. Winners will be announced at an Awards ceremony at the International Convention Centre Sydney on Thursday, 5 March 2020, ahead of International Women’s Day.

THE LAST WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Spring has arrived, and so has colour! After 20+ years publishing the District Gazette publications we're chuffed that we can now add a splash of colour! And how fantastic does it look? Teamed with our new Puzzle Corner and Gazette Go-to, we'd love to hear what you think about your new-look Gazette, why not drop us an email and let us know. This month we introduce 'Kobhi's Kitchen' on page 10. This budding little local chef is sure to dish up some delights, as he explores and shares his passion for cooking. September brings with it a hustle and bustle as the sun begins to shine, we find ourselves outdoors, in the garden, having picnics and socialising more. Our calendars begin to fill and before we know it, we're on a rapid decline to the end of the year. We couldn't publish this amazing paper without you. Do you have a story to share? A great achievement, a milestone, an accomplishment against all odds? An interesting career, a rare find, a talent, an unusual skill or hobby? We'd love to share your story, it might be exactly what our readers need to hear or know. Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Leave footprints of love and kindness wherever you go'.
