El Niño in force! Vigilance Required over the Hot Dry Summer! The entire country is still reeling from the shock of the recent fires that swept devastation over much of the state. Our thoughts and prayers go out to every person and animal affected by the fires. Tragedies like this bring together a strong community spirit, as collectively we take stock and rebuild our lives, and regain a sense of normality. A hot, dry summer was predicted, but it came as a shock to many when a fire sparked, and was driven down the mountains at lightening speed and with hurricane force, leaving a trail of destruction on Thursday 17th October. More of the dangerous weather conditions are to come. Australia is expected to experience hotter and drier conditions this spring and summer as a weak El Niño pattern develops across the Pacific Ocean. This is in stark contrast to the past two years, where La Niña conditions dominated, contributing to heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures across much of the country. And while we may have enjoyed it at the time, this has caused increased vegetation growth, which is now drying in the hot winds to become fuel for further bushfires.

From the Editor Phew! What a month! As I sit here compiling your latest community news, I’m accompanied by the constant drone of helicopters overhead, punctuated at regular intervals by sirens. Despite my best efforts to keep the windows and doors closed, the smoke has infiltrated the house making my eyes water. But at least I have a home, unlike the many, many people who have suffered the loss of property and all possessions in the devastation of Thursday 17th October. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those that have suffered loss, and to all the incredibly amazing firefighters and volunteers who continue to fight for us every day. They say it’s going to be one of the worst summers in history for fires – if you haven’t already done so, make an action plan NOW! See pg 5 for your RFS Prepare Act Survive Guide. On a lighter note, and to take your mind off the fires, we have a fabulous PreChristmas lift-out, full of various discounts and offers, to get you into the yuletide spirit! A great oportunity for you to get a headstart on your Christmas shopping! Be prepared and stay safe!

Diane O’Neill – Blue Dragon Books
Diane and Mark O’Neill opened the doors of their Glenbrook store back in June 2008, and they haven’t looked back. The Emu Plains couple have been collecting books for many years and were trading on-line for a while prior to opening the shop. Glenbrook was the perfect choice of location, firstly due to the tourist trade, but primarily because Blue Mountains people are big on reading. It could be said the “blue” was named after the mountains, but it also happens to be Diane’s favourite colour. And yes, Diane has a fascination with dragons. Hence the name, and quite befitting of the shop with arguably the best fantasy range in the Mountains. Blue Dragon stocks a wide selection of authors and titles. Fiction sales have declined, largely due to the increased popularity of e-readers. However many older titles are not available in the e-book format, and so second-hand book stores are able to maintain appeal, exhibiting strong growth in the non-fiction and collectables categories. “The Dragon” has a growing range of collector’s editions and a growing clientele searching for antiquarian books. The discerning reader will always find something of interest at Blue Dragon, and Diane and Mark are very good at sourcing rare titles. They have more and more people coming in looking for beautiful old books simply for decorating. Diane takes delight in watching customers come into the shop with their children and instilling that love of books into the children from a very early age. She has witnessed many a small child grow out of the toddler section and work their way up to the teen fiction shelves and beyond. A credit system is available at Blue Dragon, whereby Diane is happy to look at your pre-loved collection and offer a shop credit in exchange for any good quality titles. With Christmas just around the corner, why not call in to Blue Dragon for some fabulous gift ideas (see the Christmas Lift-out for your special discount). Gift vouchers are available and you can complete your purchase with a selection of beautiful handmade book marks and cards. Blue Dragon Books 11 Ross St, Glenbrook

PREPARE. ACT. SURVIVE. The message from the RFS is loud and clear – Prepare Yourself. Any past complacency should, in light of recent events, have been well and truly eradicated, and the RFS urges everyone to get ready for more fire. Preparation is not just about cleaning up around the house and having a plan. It is also about making sure you consider your physical, mental and emotional preparedness. A bush fire can be a terrifying situation. Strong gusty winds, intense heat and flames will make you tired quickly. Thick, heavy smoke will sting your eyes and choke your lungs. It will be difficult to see and breathe. The roaring sound of the fire approaching will deafen you. Embers will rain down, causing spot fires all around you. Power and water may be cut off. You may be isolated. It will be dark, noisy and extremely physically and mentally demanding. If you have any doubts about your ability to cope, you should plan to Leave Early. Go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for comprehensive information about fires burning around the area, and to download your Bushfire Survival Plan. See pg 5 in this publication for a quick reference guide.

Smokers beware. Do NOT throw cigarette butts out the window, or you could earn a broken nose for your troubles, which according to an ABC listener, is exactly what happened when a man travelling north on the M1 in peak hour traffic threw his butt out the window. While every car in the vicinity reached for their phones to dobb the perpetrator in, one man took measures to let the man know, in no uncertain terms, what act of sheer stupidity he just committed, with a fist to the nose. It’s hard to imagine that anyone would toss a butt in this weather (let alone any time). Such an act is not only foolish, but potentially life threatening. Discarded cigarette butts can easily and rapidly set the dry grasses on the verge alight. If you do see anyone throwing cigarette butts out the window onto the road, phone the Environmental Protection Agency on 131 555, and report their registration plates. There is that sentiment that dobbing is “unAutralian”, but not in this instance. Dobb away!

MONEY MATTER$ With Alex McKenzie – Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au
Complacency is the Enemy! One thing that is apparent to me on a daily basis is that most people rarely review their financial products and often have inappropriate mortgages, insurance and Superannuation policies simply because, once in place they never review the product again. Financial planners should drive this process, and to some extent they do encourage people to review their financial products, but often do not chase this as hard as possible. Therefore it is necessary for us to ensure our product is still appropriate for use. A number of factors result in our financial products becoming out-dated. The first and most obvious, our circumstances change, of course if our circumstances change the product we have is designed to suit our previous situation, and may no longer be relevant. Therefore when your situation changes it is necessary to review your insurance, superannuation and mortgage. Products improve over time, Superannuation funds and insurance policies that were once considered quality, will eventually be surpassed by more modern products, these products are often cheaper as well as offering superior features. Much in the same way as a flat screen TV from the early 2000’s is now considered poor quality and expensive. Further to this introductory rates and alike can make some mortgages and insurance policies initially very attractive, but less so down the track. This makes reviewing doubly important, once the introductory rates expire, the existing policy is probably too expensive, further to this there is likely to be a new introductory offer that can be used to your advantage. Virtually every client I see that has not reviewed either their insurance, Superannuation or mortgage in the previous 2 years is usually in the wrong product. In most cases they are paying more in fees, interest payments or insurance premiums than they should be, and furthermore almost always have inferior features. The best news is though, under almost all circumstances there is no cost to review these products, a financial advisor, bank or mortgage broker will almost always happily review these for you as it is likely to result in more revenue for them and they will not be able to make changes unless you are better off, there is literally only an upside for you, yet most of us do not regularly review our situation. It is very sound advice to review your Insurance, Mortgage and Superannuation annually. If you have not reviewed your financial products recently please contact Future Financial Service on 4727 6588 or 0414 330 651 for our assistance.

Wiggles & Giggles Creating Masterpieces
In September the Wiggles & Giggles Child Care Centre in Leonay celebrated their first ever Art Night. The highly successful event was a fundraising initiative, with all proceeds going to Westmead Childrens Hospital. One of the organisers, Lauren Armstrong said, “We were not sure exactly what to expect but were blown away with all of the support we received from our families and local community. The night was a huge success with so many children and their families coming along to check out the exhibition of amazing artworks. Every wall you walked past was filled with artworks created by our children”. A huge amount of planning and preparation went into making the art night a success and the organisers would like to pass on sincere thanks to the wonderful educators for all of the countless hours of framing and planning they did for the event. Thanks also to all the families who attended the event and purchased their child’s artworks, and to local businesses who supported the event with amazing donations for the raffle. And of course the event wouldn’t have been possible without the children, who created such wonderful masterpieces – a HUGE thank you, kids!

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com NOTE: You may recall that last month’s sibling conflict article was to be continued this month. Due to problems arising from the bushfires, the second part of the sibling conflict article will now be in the December issue, so keep an eye out next month. Apologies. In her 1995 Boyer Lecture titled “A Truly Civil Society”, Dr Eva Cox, an Australian sociologist and social commentator, said that our homes can be the most toxic places for our children. She said that it was an indictment on our society that children are sometimes safer with kind strangers in early childhood services and schools than they are with family. One of the ways of creating a safe emotional environment is to make your home a “be kind zone”. In this zone, no-one, including the adults, call each other names or tease each other. No put-downs are allowed. This has worked very well at my place with three boys. They rarely call each other names or tease each other, but if it happens they say “that’s a put-down and that’s not allowed”. It has also made them more assertive and resilient outside the home. They don’t accept put-downs or teasing from other people. My boys were watching the movie “Parental Guidance” during the recent school holidays. They told me that in one scene a little boy said “that’s a put-down, you owe me three put-ups” to which his sibling replied “I like your shirt, I like your shoes, I like your hair”. My boys loved this. They changed “put-ups” to “pull-ups” and made it a rule that the pull-ups had to be genuine, related to the skills and personal attributes of the person. We all make mistakes in relationships, and sometimes our tempers or frustrations get the better of us and we say things that are less than kind. When there is a rupture in the relationship, it’s important that we focus on repairing the relationship. This is done in many different ways, and for children put-ups or pull-ups is a good way of repairing the relationship and re-establishing an emotionally safe environment.
SECURING YOUR WORLD With Brett McVea – National Locksmiths
Ph: 1300 897 170 E: info@nationallocksmiths.com.au There was a bit of controversy in the Locksmith industry over the last couple of weeks, when a Television show decided to check if Locksmiths were doing the ethical and honest thing while attending to a “Lockout”. I’ll be the first to admit that there are some Cowboys in the industry that will cut corners, but there are also a lot of Locksmiths that do things correctly. For peace of mind when requiring a Locksmith service, here are some things that you should check before allowing them to carry out any work; 1. Do they carry a current 2BC Security Licence? 2. Are they Fully Insured? 3. Are they in a sign written van and in a Locksmith uniform? 4. Before the Locksmith carries out a “Lockout” service, have they asked you for your identification to prove that you live there? Like any trade, the Locksmith industry does have a Governing body called the “Master Locksmith Association of Australia”. Locksmiths that are Members of the MLAA have gone thru extensive training and have to complete a theory and practical test to prove that they are of the highest level in the Locksmith industry. To check if the Locksmith you have called is part of the MLAA, you can check via their website http://www.masterlocksmiths.com.au/ Another tip is to always get any Security product (Deadlocks, Window Locks, Safes etc) supplied and installed by a Locksmith only. They are trained to provide the correct product for your application and install these correctly and carry the Licenses to do so.

RSPCA NSW and Petbarn Call For Help For Animals Affected By Bush Fires The Petbarn Foundation has set up a NSW Bush Fire Appeal for pets and wildlife in need. At the time of going to print, fires were still blazing across New South Wales. Petbarn has thrown its support behind RSPCA NSW and has launched a NSW Bush Fire Appeal through its charity arm, The Petbarn Foundation, to help animals affected by the bush fires. Petbarn and RSPCA NSW are calling out to the community get behind the appeal and help raise funds for animals affected by bush fires. To kick-start the appeal, The Petbarn Foundation has donated $10,000, which will go directly to RSPCA NSW. Australians can now make a donation to the NSW Bush Fire Appeal in Petbarn stores across the country or at http://www.petbarn.com.au/bushfire-appeal with 100% of funds collected by The Petbarn Foundation being donated directly to RSPCA NSW. “The bush fires have been devastating for people across the state with more than 100 fires reported, many people losing their homes and fears of lives being lost. At this time, many animals have also been affected. We want to offer support to those people who have pets that have been caught in the disaster, as well the many animals and wildlife that have been lost in the fires,” said Paul Wilson, Director of The Petbarn Foundation.
Beware of Magpies With the change of season residents are urged to beware of magpies nesting in their midst. Penrith councillor Mark Davies said magpies nest at this time of year, changing their normal placid behaviour. “Spring is a great time to enjoy some of the fantastic outdoor recreational facilities in our City and soak up our beautiful natural environment. It’s also when birds become more active in the warmer weather so take care in green spaces such as parks, reserves or backyards,” Cr Davies said. “Spring is when nesting magpies are protective of their young and tend to swoop on people walking underneath. “This can be dangerous for small children so be sure to keep an eye on them when out and about. “By keeping out of wildlife’s way and leaving them be they’ll generally do the same for us,” he said. If a resident feels that a magpie is a menace they can contact the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on 1300 361 967 or Council on 4732 7777. You can also refer to the Magpies page on the NSW Evironment and Heritage webpage: environment. n s w. g ov. a u / a n i m a l s / TheAustralianMagpie.htm

RSPCA NSW is part of the NSW’s Government’s emergency response team. Currently, RSPCA Inspectors are working across the state to evacuate pets and livestock and transporting sick and injured animals to shelters and vet clinics where they will receive immediate attention. The RSPCA Call Centre is also at capacity fielding calls from owners in desperate need of assistance and generous supporters offering help. “Our Inspectors are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of companion animals, livestock and wildlife impacted by bushfires across the state,” said Steve Coleman, CEO of RSPCA NSW. “We are unbelievably grateful for the Petbarn Foundation’s generous offer of support — and support from the community — during this particularly challenging time,” he said. The RSPCA’s job won’t stop when the fires are under control. The organisation has an ongoing commitment to all the wildlife, pets and livestock that need prolonged medical attention and care. After the fires have stopped, the Inspectors will go back into the field to look for survivors and assist owners with treatment, food and shelter for their misplaced animals. r Vince Pollaers of Petbarn with RSPCANSW CEO Steve Coleman and four-legged friends

The French gave the biggest Christmas present ever in 1886. It was the Statue of Liberty, and they gave it to the United States of America. (The French have one too, a smaller one, in Paris.) Santa Claus was a real Saint. He lived in Myra in the 300s. Myra is in what’s now Turkey. The German name for Saint Nicholas is Sankt Niklaus.

The first artificial Christmas Tree wasn’t a tree at all. It was created out of goose feathers that were dyed. Christmas has many, many names. Do you know some of them—aside from, of course, Christmas? How about? Sheng Tan Kuai Loh (China), or Hauskaa Joulua (Finland), or Joyeux Noel (France)? In Wales, it’s Nadolig Llawen, and in Sweden, God Jul.

Mallakhamb Acrobats At the end of September, your editor was thrilled to be part of the audience at the Gallery for a free performance by two brilliant young Indian acrobats. Mallakhamb Acrobats Vijay Ashok Bhojane and Rajesh Amrale presented an amazing display of strength, agility and flexibility as they performed gravity-defying poses and feats on a wooden pole in the Gallery garden. A Great Walk and a Great Step Forward The latest section of the Great River Walk along River Road in Emu Plains is now complete. The new section of shared path stretches from Francis Avenue to Dewdney Road and has brought the proposed 570 kilometre walk one step closer to completion. The latest stage has been jointly funded by council and the Metropolitan Greenspace Program. “The Nepean River is Penrith’s best asset,” Councillor Mark Davies said. “Our ongoing work on the Great River Walk is just one way to ensure all residents can enjoy this beautiful natural landscape.” The community-directed draft masterplan for the area around the river was unveiled in September. “Extensive consultation has already taken place to create the masterplan, the feedback from the community has emphasised the value we all place on the river area. “The final masterplan will give us shovel ready works for which we can apply for funding and enable us to implement the masterplan over a number of years.” Cr Davies said the Draft Masterplan will guide the long term evolution of the Nepean River precinct between and around the M4 Bridge and Victoria Bridge. “The masterplan will help us make sure the area is a great experience now and into the future for people who visit the river daily, weekly or just every now and then,” he said. While some elements of the plan, such as extending the Great River Walk and construction of a shared path down Jamison Road linking the river to Mulgoa Road, can be implemented now, the final Masterplan will be put into action over a number of years. “The intention of the Masterplan is to re-integrate the river with both the landscape and people of Penrith. It’s a considered process which encourages participation, partnership and creative expression,” Cr Davies said.

THIS SPORTING LIFE All in a Day’s Work for Jeremy!
r Tennis pro Jeremy White prepares for a long day on the courts
Professional tennis coach Jeremy White is back on the circuit after a nine-month absence due to injury. He’s in fine form after a series of Australian Money Tournament (ATM) Circuit events over the past few weeks. In his first tournament of the season, he breezed through to the the early rounds, defeating many of the seeded players. He was defeated in the semi’s by the number 2 seed in a hard-fought 3-setter. Jeremy then had to qualify for the Parramatta Open, and again knocked out the top seeds only to be defeated again in the semi’s by the number 1 seeded player, who incidentally was ranked 187 in the world. November is a hectic month, with tournaments, and hopefully many successes, every week. Jeremy has been selected to play in the Australian Tennis Team League (ATL) with Macquarie University Warriors. The team will play 6 round matches throughout NSW and ACT, with the winning team qualifying for the Australian Open Asia Pacific League. With his goals set to enter the Australian top 200 by the end of the year, Jeremy also has his eye on qualifying for 2014 Future Pro Circuit, which holds international events, and will enable Jeremy to gain a world ranking. When he’s not on the court playing, he’s on the court coaching. As owner and head coach of YT’s Tennis in Glenbrook, tennis is all part of a day’s work. Jeremy is a level 2 club professional Coach and holds certificate 3 in fitness. He is the only club professional coach in the lower Blue Mountains. Jeremy and his team are dedicated to working with junior tennis players and helping them achieve their goals. He believes in the importance of developing a player’s game in the early years. Jeremy has worked with nationally ranked juniors and internationally ranked players. Jeremy would like to thank his sponsors for their strong support: Tony Ferguson, Violet Shores, Technifibre and Everybody Physiotherapy, Penrith.

New Website Puts Local Galleries & Museums On the Map
Put The Spotlight On An Outstanding Australian If you admire someone for making a difference to the Penrith community, then nominate them for a 2014 Australia Day Award. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Penrith City Council’s annual Australia Day Awards are the perfect occasion to honour the everyday heroes whose outstanding contributions might otherwise go unrecognised. “These awards allow Council to hold up Penrith residents as model Australians and highlight their stories and efforts to help others,” he said. To receive this prestigious honour winners should demonstrate excellence in their field and be considered inspirational role models for the community. The awards will highlight excellence across categories including citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, sportsperson of the year and community services. One nomination is all it takes for your hero to be in contention. Visit penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ausday and send us your nomination before 12 November 2013.
Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP welcomes the announcement that museums and galleries in the Penrith area will feature on an innovative website from Museums and Galleries NSW, funded by the NSW Government. Penrith Museum of Printing, Arms of Australia Inn, Museum of Fire and Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest are all featured on the new website. “This is terrific news for visitors to Penrith and it is also a great resource for locals to access details of Museums and Galleries in our area” said Mr Ayres. • The new Museums and Galleries NSW website will display information on the range of collections, events and activities at museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural centres across the State. It can be found at www.mgnsw.org.au. • Museums and Galleries are vital assets for regional communities, and this website will help attract visitors by synchronising information about their location, hours and upcoming exhibitions. • This is just one way in which the NSW Government is supporting museums and galleries across the State. The Government also provides a range of grants, and funding for fellowships and mentoring which are administered by Museums and Galleries NSW. • The new website will make it easier for visitors to plan their trip, and features regional breakdowns for potential visitors looking to see what is on at local galleries and museums during their stay. • People using the site will be able to create trip itineraries and share their experiences via social networks. The site will also use geo-location technology and be mobile friendly, so people can find a gallery, museum or Aboriginal cultural centre nearby. Minister for the Arts, George Souris said the website is part of the Government’s commitment to arts and culture in NSW, in acknowledgment of the very important role the museums sector plays in the cultural, creative, social and economic development. Arts NSW is the NSW Government’s arts policy and funding body – www.arts.nsw. gov.au. Museums and Galleries is the leading agency for regional, community and public museums and galleries in NSW – www.mgnsw.org.au.
