SPOTLIGHT ON . . .

Melinda Leyshon – WriteCopy

Melinda Leyshon is a local girl who decided to take control of her own career development after the birth of her daughter. After ten years, travelling to a gig in corporate publishing wasn’t appealing compared to play doh and nursery rhymes! So she reinvented herself in order to find that elusive work/life balance. She is well-known in the Penrith business community as the Managing Director of Production Automotive, but 12 months ago she went back to her first love, which was writing. WriteCopy, a copywriting agency, has taken off – requests for tenders, website copy and SEO copywriting, blogs, newsletters and even editing of an occasional book (or three!) are coming in left, right and centre. What began as a labour of love has quickly become a thriving enterprise. The moral of the story? “Don’t be scared to step outside of your comfort zone and trust in yourself. It’s definitely mentally challenging, but with the right support structure anything is achievable! Focus on what you love doing, and have the faith that you are good at it.“ Melinda works with small and corporate businesses to ensure their communication is streamlined and professional. BUCKET BRIGADE

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED This year McHappy Day is aiming to raise $3.4 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and is calling on Emu & Leonay community groups and organisations to form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ to help reach their target. McDonald’s Emu Plains will host McHappy Day activities on Saturday November 9, and community groups including local businesses, dance groups, the fire brigade and ambulance, are encouraged to get involved by volunteering their time and forming a ‘Bucket Brigade’ to collect donations at their local restaurant. This year’s fundraising target would equate to funding over 27,000 tuition sessions through the Ronald McDonald Learning Program, which helps children recovering from serious illness catch up on missed schooling. “The Bucket Brigades are a simple and easy way for people in the community to get involved and help make a difference to the lives of families with seriously ill children,” said Kerry Gordon, licensee, McDonald’s Emu Plains. “One in eight people either have been or know someone who has been affected by childhood illness so I am sure there are people in the local community who know the heartache and stress of having a child with a serious illness,” added Kerry. RMHC creates, finds and supports programs across Australia that help seriously ill children and their families including, but not limited to, Ronald McDonald Houses, the Ronald McDonald Learning Program and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. To date, the 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across Australia alone have provided more than 85,000 families with a ‘home away from home’ while their child has undergone treatment for serious illness at a nearby hospital – but there are more families in need. To meet the growing need from families over the next few years, RMHC is aiming to build new or extend up to five Houses, open 12 more Family Rooms, as well as extending and developing other programs such as the Ronald McDonald Learning Program. To volunteer a ‘Bucket Brigade’ team to help out on McHappy Day, please contact the McHappy Day Project Office on mchappyday@ppr.com.au.

We’re All In This Together The tree outside my window died a few months ago. Actually, it seems to have gone out in sympathy! The two next to it died not long before. It’s like they needed each other to stay healthy and thrive. Living in a community seems to be like that as well. We are individuals, but we need each other to stay healthy and thrive as well. The challenge we’re faced with is when we’re all looking out for ‘number one’. That isn’t a community. It’s just a group of individuals who live near each other. The Lord Jesus showed how we can stay healthy and thrive as individuals and as a community. It’s when we serve others in our community, and put what’s best for them before what’s best for us. The Bible reveals that that was His plan from the beginning. But when things went pear shaped, he took it to a whole other level. He didn’t come into the world to be served, but to serve, and give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Instead of looking after Himself He served others. In that way He not only showed us how to live, but freed us from living for ourselves, so we can serve others and our community. Doesn’t that sound like a good community to live in?

Applications Now Open For Sporting Grants Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP is encouraging local groups to apply for NSW Government grants that could fund new sport facilities or programs that help people get active. The NSW Government is offering grants to local sporting groups and councils planning new and improved sports facilities or programs that increase participation in sport and recreation. “I know we have a lot of passionate sports people and dedicated club volunteers here in Penrith who would love funding to improve their facilities or run new programs,” Mr Ayres said. “I encourage them to make the most of this opportunity to secure a grant for their local project – whether it’s building new netball courts, installing shading at a swimming pool or running a special tournament for disadvantaged young people.” Applications for Round One of the Sport and Recreation Participation and Facility Program 2013-14 close on 30 October 2013. Grants are capped at $10,000 for participation projects and $25,000 for facility projects. Organisations may apply for multiple projects or project types, with the maximum available to any one organisation in a financial year capped at $50,000. Applicants must contribute 50% or more to the project. Examples of projects eligible for funding: Facility projects – the construction of new, fixed and portable facilities; and enhancement of existing facilities. Participation projects – deliver a program or service that will assist people to become more active. Projects that make sport and recreation facilities safer, more accessible and environmentally sustainable and programs that provide greater sporting options to seniors, people with a disability and other groups facing barriers to participation are strongly encouraged to apply. For more information and application guidelines, please visit the website at www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/grants or phone 13 13 02.

MONEY MATTER$ With Alex McKenzie – Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au

When Should I Start Planning to Retire? This is one of the most common questions I am asked, and the simple answer is as soon as possible. In reality, for most of our working life there are priorities that take precedence ahead of our retirement so rightfully we direct our income to achieving these more immediate goals. As we go through life there are a number of stages that influence how we prepare for our retirement. Accumulation Phase Whilst we are saving for or paying off our home, saving for holidays and education, we can have one eye on retirement by giving our superannuation the attention it deserves. This involves ensuring our superannuation is in an appropriate fund and invested in line with our goals, a financial planner can assist in this process. Mandated employer contributions need to be treated as real money and paying the correct attention will ensure these savings are not eroded through mismanagement. Although retirement in this phase is a low priority, being savvy at this point can make a large difference at retirement age. Empty nest and mortgage free This is the point that most of us have significant disposable income we can contribute to our retirement. Once our kids are off our hands or at least for the most part financially dependent, in general, our living costs reduce significantly. Furthermore our mortgage repayments are our biggest expense, so once this debt is paid we have significant cash surplus and the capacity to save increases dramatically. It is advisable to direct a significant amount of this surplus cash flow to save for retirement. This is a perfect time to speak to an adviser at this point in your life. Age 55 When you turn age 55 a number of financial planning strategies become available that in many cases allow for you to increase your retirement savings without reducing cash flow. These strategies revolve around accessing your Super through a Pension and replacing taxable income with concessional taxed income. These strategies are further enhanced at age 60. With people living longer and the government wanting us to be less reliant on the Governmet pension, it is important for all of us to adequately prepare for our retirement and always at least have one eye on this goal throughout our working life. If you do not have a retirement plan or at least an excellent handle on your superannuation strategy then it is probably advisable to see a Financial advisor to develop a plan.

WHAT’S COOKING? Snow peas aren’t just for stir-fries. Thinly sliced, their crunchy texture and sweet taste make this salad a real winner!

Warm Snow Pea & Chicken Salad • Serves 4 Ingredients 500g boneless, skinless chicken breast, trimmed 13/4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 3 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce 3 teaspoons toasted sesame oil, divided 2 tablespoons tahini, or cashew butter 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 2 cloves garlic, minced 500g snow peas, trimmed and thinly slivered lengthwise 2 tablespoons chopped cashews Method 1. Place chicken in a medium skillet or saucepan and add broth; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer gently until cooked through and no longer pink in the middle, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board to cool. Shred into bite-size pieces. (Cool and refrigerate the broth, reserving it for another use.) 2. Meanwhile, whisk vinegar, soy sauce, 2 teaspoons sesame oil and tahini (or cashew butter) in a large bowl until smooth. 3. Heat the remaining 1 teaspoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add ginger and garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in slivered peas and cook, stirring, until bright green, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to the bowl with the dressing. 4. Add the chicken to the bowl with the peas; toss to combine. Serve sprinkled with cashews.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Got more than one child? Chances are that a lot of your energy is spent sorting out the interactions between them. It’s a big button pusher for parents. It’s also practice for life in the big, wide world of school, work, and interpersonal relationships. Sibling rivalry is just conflict, and there are various conflict management tools that you can use… • Be a good role model. Your kids are looking at you, and they are the best imitators. If you don’t handle conflict well, your children won’t either. • Make your home an emotionally safe place to be. One of your house rules should be that the home is a “no put-down zone” or stated in more positive terms a “be kind zone”. That’s no teasing or name calling by both children and parents. • Make your home a physically safe place to be. Have firm consequences for physical violence between children. Do you smack your children? As one parent said to me years ago “I smack my children for hitting each other, it just doesn’t make any sense”. Parenting courses like Triple P provide you with the tools for positive parenting. • Focus on your children’s positive behaviours. The more you focus on their positive behaviours the more positive their behaviour will be. This is backed by forty years of research. Actually pay attention to when they are getting along well, and give them descriptive praise, for example, “I really like how nicely you are playing together, you are using nice words and being kind to each other”. I ask my boys in a curious manner, how they were able to play so well together after a great session. This gives them the opportunity to reflect on what works well in getting along. • Encourage your kids to use “I-statements”. An I-statement focuses on you owning your own feelings, for example, “when you do … I feel … And remember to use them yourself! However, sometimes the brother is making that high pitched noise because he knows it annoys his sister, and hearing that it makes her angry gives him the satisfaction he was seeking. I-statements are a good tool for being assertive and owning your own feelings but they don’t provide resolution in all situations. • When the kids are starting to get a bit scratchy with each other you can get closer to them. I call this technique “proximity and presence”. School teachers use it with disruptive students in the classroom. They get closer. • You can try some problem solving (from the Second Step programme)… “What’s the problem?” (get them to state the problem objectively with no blame attached) … “What are some solutions to the problem?”…For each solution ask… “is it safe?; how might other people feel about it?; is it fair?; will it work?”. I’ve used this technique with children from age 4 and up. • Sometimes you just have to separate kids so they can chill out for a while. Sometimes feuding kids can’t see past the overwhelm to think of other strategies, and need assistance from an adult to break the pattern of conflict. Wow! This is such a big topic. I will have to continue it next month. Basically, the more positive the home is the less conflict there will be, but there will always be some. Conflict provides the opportunity for greater understanding and that’s always a good thing. I have a heap of parenting groups coming up in Term 4, so hop on over to http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/ parent-groups-term-4-2013/ to have a look to see if something interests you. There is a lot of interest in these courses at the moment and places are limited.

SECURING YOUR WORLD With Brett McVea – National Locksmiths Ph: 1300 897 170 E: info@nationallocksmiths.com.au Is your Safe really Secure? Do you have a Fire Rated Safe protecting your prized belongings? Time and time again, we are called out after a break and enter to install a safe due to the client not having a Safe (to begin with) or relying on a sub standard Safe that was purchased cheaply. From my professional experience, there is not much that can be Safe or Secure about a Brand new Safe costing less than $300. When it comes to purchasing a Safe you should check on a few things before handing over your money. Where is the safe made and are spare parts available should you require them (as most safes are imported and parts are not available in Australia)? How long is the warranty and what does it cover? Is the Safe Fire rated and if so, for how long and to who’s standards? How much is the insurance rating on the Safe should the Safe get broken into? What kind of Locking system does this safe have and are keys available to be cut in Australia? For comfort and peace of mind, always seek any Locksmith’s advice before you purchase a safe for any application, instead of just looking at the price tag. If you would like any further information regarding Safe Standards and Regulations, please don’t hesitate to call National Locksmiths on 1300 897 170.
