Local Athletes to Make a Splash at World Championships
Local triathlete Andrea Forrest
Local triathletes Andrea Forrest and Sam Appleton have both qualified to represent Australia at the 2014 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Canada. Held on September 7, the local duo will have the opportunity to mix it up with the world’s top 35 professional triathletes. With a prize purse of $250,000 for distribution among the top professional male and female finishers, both are in with a chance of a podium. “This is a huge opportunity for me, particularly at this point in my professional career,” said Forrest. “Training has been going well through winter and the recent opening of Atmosphere Health and Fitness Club has been a huge advantage, even enabling me to train on the race course via the Computrainer indoor cycling technology”. Appleton is highly accomplished at this distance, securing a number of podium finishes over the past 12 months. He is keen to replicate this success in Canada. “I’m really looking forward to racing the world championships against the best triathletes in the world,” he said. ...Continued Page 6.

FROM THE EDITOR
Hello Spring! Welcome to the September edition of your community news. I know I have enjoyed the brief appearances of sunshine, amidst the rain that we also need so desperately. This month we feature 50 years of spring in the Blue Mountains with the ‘Leura Gardens Festival’. This year’s festival takes place in October, read all about it on page 7. Our resident parenting expert, Narelle, talks to us about guiding and educating our children while teaching new skills and behaviours on page 8. Next month, we’re getting right into the spirit of spring, with our COLOUR Wedding Spectacular. If you, or someone you know is planning a wedding, this will be one edition NOT to miss! Meanwhile, we have plenty of stories and events for you to catch up on, so, sit-back, grab a cuppa and enjoy your community news! The best feeling of happiness, is when you’re happy because you’ve made someone else happy.

M4/Russell Street, Leonay Pinch Point Works Complete Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomes the news that pinch point works at the M4 westbound off ramp and Russell Street intersection at Leonay are now complete. Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government provided $2 million to the work as part of the $246 million pinch point program which improves existing bottlenecks on the road network to reduce delays for road users. “The off ramp at Russell Street was identified as a critical pinch point for motorists with westbound vehicles using the off ramp to exit the M4 queue backing onto the motorway, blocking through lanes and increasing the risk of high speed crashes,” Stuart Ayres said. Work started earlier in the year to install metered traffic lights at the southbound approach to the roundabout on Russell Street, a queue detector was also installed on the M4 off ramp to activate the traffic lights and allow a free flow of vehicles from the M4 off ramp through the roundabout and a new 90 metre left turn lane on the roundabout approach was also built. “The Russell St exit is one the best examples of how Labor neglected Penrith. What Labor couldn’t do in 16 years we have delivered in one term of Government.” Stuart Ayres said this is yet another reminder that this government is determined to improve the infrastructure, reduce delays, manage congestion and maintain travel times on Western Sydney’s main roads, particularly during week day peak periods. Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith.

Ask, and it will be Given to you Well, the Russell St, Leonay Parade and M4 interchange has been upgraded. And it offers shorter queues getting off the M4, less exposure to M4 traffic while you get off, and overall a safer and more effective route to Emu-Leonay. It goes to show that when enough letters are sent, politicians lobbied, and assessments made - the government listens. Not only that, they have the ability to deliver, and give us what we need. When people hear talk about prayer and the Lord God, they often see it as wishful thinking. Others see it as a crutch for people who can’t handle real life. But actually the Bible tells us it’s a direct line to the one and ultimate governor over all. It’s the privilege of asking Him for what we need. And it comes with the promise that He not only hears, but will give us everything we need. Jesus said “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.’ (Matthew 7:7-8). Now you and I have both experienced differences of opinion, and no doubt there are different expectations of what we need. But the invitation of God is to trust that when we’re willing to ask, He’ll give us what we actually need and more. Not sure what to ask for first? Why not ask that he’ll give you the wisdom to know what to ask! Rev Roger Cunningham

Pensioner Excursion Tickets Remain

ior
Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith reminds pensioners and seniors they can rest assured that they can keep buying and using Pensioner Excursion Tickets (PET) today and after 1 September when some paper tickets are retired. When the Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card is introduced later this year, fares will be capped at $2.50 a day for seniors and pensioners. Some pensioners and seniors may even pay less under Opal for short trips that don’t reach their $2.50 cap. Customers will not need a credit card or the internet to use or obtain a Gold Senior/ Pensioner Opal card. The Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card will not cost anything to get, and customers will be able to manually top it up with cash if they want to. Seniors and pensioners will be given a lot off information about how to get a new Gold Opal card, and how to use it, before it is released later this year. “These customers will be able to continue buying and using PETs, after the Opal card is released, and well into the future, added Stuart Ayres.

Man Caught Driving Six Times Over the Legal Limit
Local Athletes to Make a Splash at World Championships
A man has been charged after being caught allegedly driving six times over the legal blood alcohol limit at Emu Plains last month. About 11pm on Saturday 16 August 2014, a Honda Jazz driving along Nepean Street allegedly crashed into a power pole. Police have been told the 30-year-old male driver continued driving south along the street for another kilometre, even after one of the tyres came off the car. When the Honda hit a kerb and stopped, nearby residents detained the driver and called police. Officers from St Marys Local Area Command attended and subjected the driver to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive reading. He was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, where a breath analysis returned a reading of 0.314, more than six times the legal alcohol limit. The man was charged with high range PCA and granted conditional bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday 8 September 2014.
“This will really set a benchmark for the level of performance required to compete with the top echelon of competition. I’ve managed to complete a really good training block heading into the race and hopefully the upcoming Challenge Gold Coast race this weekend can provide me with a launching pad into some great race form. Although both are professional athletes, they fit their training load around work and study. Forrest is a physiotherapist with Penrith Physio Sports Centre and an ambassador for the Luke Priddis Foundation, while Appleton is studying Occupational Therapy at the University of Western Sydney. Both are members of Panthers Triathlon Club. “We have athletes of all abilities at PTC, and are extremely proud of Andrea and Sam who are great ambassadors for our club and community, said Panthers Tri Club President Chris Joseph. “Before embarking on the pro ranks they were our club champions in the 2012/13 season, and they’ve both just gone from strength to strength. We’re really looking forward to getting behind them and cheering them on at the World Champs. The 1.9km swim takes place in Tremblant Lake, followed by a oneloop, 90km bike through Mont-Tremblant’s mountains. Athletes will then embark on the 21.1km half marathon. More than 90,000 athletes participated in the IRONMAN 70.3 Series during the 2013-2014 season, which consisted of over 50 events in locations including Australia, Germany, South Africa and Switzerland. Both athletes would benefit significantly from local sponsorship. For further information, please contact Rodney Forrest on rodney_ forrest@hotmail.com.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Parents who come to my groups hear me say quite often… “What is the most POSITIVE thing I can do, to GUIDE and EDUCATE my child, to teach him/her new SKILLS and BEHAVIOURS, and maintain the RELATIONSHIP?” It’s a prompt that I wrote for parents to guide them in growing up their children. Recently, in one of the groups, a parent asked… “What can I do about a child interrupting whilst I’m speaking to someone? He does it all of the time.” Why do children interrupt? Because what they have to say is the most important thing to them at this point in time. Children are egocentric, they do believe that whole world revolves around them. They are not deliberately being selfish, it’s part of their brain development, and if you think about it it’s a survival tactic. They get excited about what they want to say. They want to say it quickly because if they don’t say it right now they might forget and everyone will miss out on hearing their wisdom. It’s not because they are rude or stupid. Why do we have to constantly remind our kids about some of our rules and values? Because they are kids. Because when they get excited, they forget about the rules and social niceties. Because their logical and rational brain is not fully developed. Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA says that we have to remind our kids of the rules up to 2,000 times, for each rule. That’s a lot of reminding, but that’s part of the job of being a parent. So, let’s break down our problem with the child interrupting using the above prompt… Most positive thing? Being kind, caring, and supportive. Guide and educate? Give the child a hand signal to stop. Relationship? Look the child in the eye to let him know you’ve heard him. Draw him in close for a side hug, or softly touch his shoulder. New skills and behaviours? At the first available moment, acknowledge his excitement and gently remind the child that he interrupted and remind him of what to do instead. Say, “Hey I know you are keen to tell me something, but you interrupted the conversation between Dad and I, next time please say ‘excuse me’ “. Now, in this instance the young fella has ADHD, which means he has trouble with hyperactivity, impulse control, memory, organisation, and focus. And a lot of kids with ADHD also have anxiety. So we added the additional strategy of teaching him to write down on his white board what he needs to tell Mum so he doesn’t get anxious about forgetting it. Of course, if it’s an emergency, like the stove has caught fire or the baby has climbed onto the change table and is about to nose dive off it, then we don’t mind our kids interrupting us. Do we? That’s a whole lot better than calling our kids ‘rude’ (a putdown), screaming at them for interrupting, and telling them to go away. What do they learn when this approach is used? How does it make them feel? How likely are they to want to come and tell you something if this is the reaction they always get? If you have a child with ADHD or ADD you may like to come along to a support group that has recently been established in the Penrith area. The group meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30pm at South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre. All welcome.

Last month, nine girls from Our Lady of the Way, Emu Plains were chosen to compete in the Sydney final of the NSW Netball Cup. The girls played in the regional final in July and finished the day undefeated. If successful in the Sydney final, the girls will progress to the state final in September (at the time of printing, the results of the finals were not known). The team members are Jasmine Ridding, Alyssa Procter, Madison Whitely, Alanah Eisenhuth, Shae Healey, Laura Patterson, Bridie Witjes, Ruby Lowe and Kate Charlton. Not only are they talented netballers but they will also take to the court looking professional in a new team uniform which was generously donated by the Patterson family. The Kids Cancer Project is the charity partner of NSW Netball and the team from Our Lady of the Way are keen to support this worthwhile cause. The team manager, Mrs. McKeon, is proud of the sportsmanship and team work these girls demonstrate. She believes they are a wonderful inspiration for the 60 students from O.L.O.W. who also took part in a local netball carnival last month.

HEALTH MATTERS
The Lions, the Woman and the Workshop
Article by: Rhonda Rolfe Harmonising Health Ph: 0430 047 421 E: rhonda@harmonisinghealth.com.au W: www.harmonisinghealth.com.au
No, the Title is not a New Kids Book/Movie, it’s our Latest Good News Story! The Lions Club of Emu Plains has since last year, taken Edinglassie resident David Reid, a stroke patient, out for a weekly coffee. As a consequence of that association we have two ‘Friends of Lions’ who work at Edinglassie, and provide assistance on our raffle days and other fund raising efforts. One of those ‘Friends’ Diane Hudson (Edinglassie Admin) asked if EP Lions would like to be involved in setting up a workshop for the residents. In conjunction with Jo Carter (Activity Co-ordinator for Edinglassie Village) we reviewed an existing workshop which hadn’t been used for 3 years or so, and as many of the residents showed an interest in woodwork, Jo wanted to reopen the workshop. The work by Lions included the workshop area being cleared & cleaned out. All tools had to be rectified ie drop saw, stand drill, band saw and sanding machine. All hand tools had to be sorted, cleaned & checked. Work included building a new work bench. Edinglassie bought materials to complete the workshop. Emu Plains Lions involved - Liam Nangle supplied the timber needed at no cost and built the bench, Alan Cooper, Liam Nangle, John Choma & David Kitley have all been involved. Bob Baines supplied masks, ear plugs & ear muffs. David Kitley made & installed the Lions sign and also an honour board. Everyone involved had to fill in police check forms and be OK’d due to working in an aged care facility. John Choma is currently working out a weekly roster for Lions ‘supervision’. Enquiries: 4735 5120
Fears and Phobias Do you have a fear or a phobia which is holding you back, stopping you from doing the things you want to do? Maybe a fear of flying is stopping you from enjoying that overseas holiday or your fear of snakes prevents you from enjoying the outdoors with your family. A lot of people will tell you FEAR just means False Evidence Appearing Real, and to get over it, but for those who suffer from a fear of something, it is real and it is not a matter of just getting over it. Often the fear or phobia started when you were very young and something that someone said or did which, at the time was said or done in fun, had an effect on you and each time you are faced with that fear, the embarrassing feelings or the anxiety which occurred on that very first time, come rushing back and stop you dead in your tracks. You don’t have to live life with these limitations. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Tapping Therapy is excellent at addressing such issues. It will allow you to address the anxiety around the fear or phobia so you can enjoy your life to the fullest. Imagine being able to hop on a plane, climb a ladder, sky dive, ride in a hot air balloon, enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors without panicking about what might happen. It is possible, but it’s up to you to take the first step.

MONEY MATTERS With Alex McKenzie - Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au
Dangers of Stock Picking One of the biggest mistakes when investing is looking backwards and expecting the past to be replicated. Picking the best performing stocks (or asset class) from the previous year lends itself to paying too much for investments and often leads to following the herd. I was reading an article from another financial planner comparing the performance of Apple and Microsoft, undoubtedly 2 terrific technology companies that both listed on the stock exchange in the 80’s, their stories terrifically illustrate this behaviour perfectly. In 2002, Microsoft was the market leader and looked the far superior company. In fact $10,000 invested in Microsoft at the time the they listed would be worth $3 Million, most analysts rated Microsoft as “buy” or “strong buy”, Credit Suisse were the most bullish on Microsoft and predicted that the Stock would rise a further 80% (Approximately). At the same time Apple had yet to provide investors with
significant returns, most analysts regarded Apple as a poor investment and many were questioning their move into retail. Looking backwards in 2002, the choice of investment was obvious, Microsoft was a better company. If we invested $10,000 in Microsoft in 2002, it would be worth $13,000 by 2012, a 30% increase plus dividends over that period and Microsoft has performed ok. Apple on the other hand has been nothing short of phenomenal, that same $10,000 invested in Apple in 2002 would be worth over $700,000 a decade later. Selecting which stocks will boom is difficult, and is certainly not an exact science. When investment planning, the key is not trying to select which stocks are going to boom, but achieving diversification by investing in a number of different assets and spreading the risk. Alex McKenzie
Gallipoli Public Call Out The Gallery is curating an exhibition for the Gallipoli anniversary next year called Home Front. The exhibition in the main Gallery will feature large scale drawings by local artist Catherine O’Donnell but we would also like to get our local community involved so we are wanting to do a public call out for items that can add to the story. Can you please help us get the message out to the community so they too can be a part of this very special exhibition. The Gallery is doing a call out for our 2015 Gallipoli Home Front exhibition on show 4 April – 24 May. Do you have a long lost relative or friend that had a connection to the Gallipoli campaign? We’re on the hunt for personal mementoes such as letters, photos, mouth accordions, pens, pocket knives, pipes, hats, or games. These personal effects will be on display alongside large scale drawings of the intimate spaces and circumstances soldiers lived in such as the trenches, fox holes and tents by acclaimed artist Catherine O’Donnell. 2015 is the 100th anniversary of the eighth month Gallipoli campaign and this exhibition aims to provide an intimate insight to the lives of the soldiers, and describe the tension of being at the war ‘front’ yet keeping a small piece of ‘home’ and identity with them – hence the title Home Front. Please feel free to circulate to friends & family and contact the gallery if you need any further information.

McDonald’s Community Facility Grants Program Now Open for Emu and Leonay’s Cricketers Members of the Emu and Leonay cricket community are being invited to apply for funding for major projects through the McDonald’s Community Facility Grants Program. The primary purpose of the 2014/15 fund is to improve playing and practice facilities, which includes the development and expansion of practice facilities, the establishment and repair of synthetic and turf wickets, as well as improvements to amenities. Applications must be submitted by 5pm, Tuesday 30 September 2014 and all projects must be completed by 31 December 2015. Funding is available up to a maximum of 25% of the total cost of the project. Game Development General Manager - NSW/ACT, Cameron French, said the Grants Program would help to provide valuable infrastructure for cricket communities around the State. “The McDonald’s Community Facility Grants Program is designed to support councils, clubs, schools and associations in providing facilities that will help develop and foster cricket in their local communities,” he said. “In 2013/14 we were able to support 27 projects from all over the State, ranging from Albury, Armidale, Wagga Wagga in regional NSW to Lane Cove, Bangor, Ryde, Waverley and Drummoyne in metropolitan Sydney,” he added. McDonald’s Emu Plains licensee, Kerry Gordon, said their support of the Community Facility Grants Program was just one way in which the partnership with Cricket NSW encourages and inspires local cricket players and communities.
“It brings me tremendous joy to know that through our partnership with Cricket NSW, we will help foster the growth and development of one of Australia’s most loved sports. I urge the Emu and Leonay cricket community to take advantage of the program and apply.” Organisations interested in applying for the Grants Program should contact Cricket NSW either by phone (02 8302 6000) or email (gamedevelopment@cricketnsw.com.au) to obtain a copy of the guidelines and application forms.

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success
Pupcake Recipe
A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted a Cupcake Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on Monday 18th August 2014. Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised $700.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Carly, Eden, Lizzie and Renai cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, Mars Bar and Malteser slice, and cupcakes. The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony, Bella and Callie loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. We wish every day was cupcake day!
Animals should not eat cupcakes unless they are specially made with safe, animal friendly ingredients. Chocolate is especially toxic to many animals! Remember, Pupcakes are special treats and shouldn’t be fed to your dog regularly! This recipe makes around 12-14 Pupcakes. Ingredients 2 ž cups water Âź cup unsweetened apple sauce Âź cup oats 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup fresh diced apple 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cage free egg, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Method Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Spray muffin tins with cooking oil. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients slowly and mix well. Pour into muffin tins and bake for 25-30 minutes. Once the Pupcakes have cooled, you can ice the Pupcakes with smooth peanut butter. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www. orchardhillsvet.com.au.
