Every day I am fortunate enough to experience first-hand the true gift that organ donation offers, the gift of life, and the many remarkable unsung heroes. Celebrate life, it is far too precious. By the time this issue makes it into your letter boxes, school will have resumed for the year, and we will be well and truly out of holiday mode. I’ve included a tempting after school snack on page 11, sure to please even the harshest of critics! The Legend of

St Valentine

The history of Valentine’s Day – and the story of its patron saint – is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl--possibly his jailor’s daughter--who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and--most importantly--romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

SPOTLIGHT ON . . .

Origins of Valentine’s Day: A Pagan Festival in February While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270 – others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Valentine’s Day: A Day of Romance Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”– at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14th St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love.
During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. Source: http://www.history.com/topics/valentines-day

Despite our modern technology, our iphones, ipads, ipods & itunes – technology that can so easily send us off into our own private world – people want to feel connected. Add to this that the pace of life has moved from busy to frantic, even chaotic, as we fill our lives with all sorts of things & it is no wonder people are increasingly expressing a desire to feel happy, to feel some sense of contentment & to be connected with others. Did you know that in 1985 the average person had 3 close friends, people with whom they could confide & connect with, people they could feel comfortable with. In the space of just 20 years that number dropped to two in 2004. Those who had no close friends also jumped from 10% to 25%, and people reporting a healthy circle of 4 or 5 friends dropped from 33% to just over 15%. So many of us are feeling those changes! In 2013 we might have lots of Facebook “friends” but the reality is that so many of us feel less connected than ever, more & more cut off from those around us; isolated & alone.

However, it’s even bigger than that. As people open up about their lives, they also speak of the spiritual vacuum in their life. They feel disconnected from God. They feel as if their life is a spiritual desert; a waste land, that their life is rudderless, drifting with nothing of substance to hold onto or give direction, meaning or purpose. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we want to do something about that. Real life is to be enjoyed by being connected to the God who is real, who is there & who can be known. We aim to create a community where people have good friendships & where they feel they belong, but also where they have a sense of greater purpose; knowing God & enjoying real life with Him through a living relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ. Consider God’s great words from the Bible in the book of Joel, “Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious & compassionate.” If you’ve never tried Church or even if you’ve come a few times, or if you haven’t really connected with God, we would love you & your family to come on Sundays to find real life by connecting with God & connecting with others. A great thing to do in 2013. To find out more give me a call on 4733 1635. Rev John Lavender

Starting kindergarten for the first time can be quite overwhelming, not only for kids but for parents as well. It can bring lots of smiles and laughter, as well as lots of tears and cuddles. For five year old Ella Lloyd, there was nothing but big smiles as she started her first day at Regentville Public School. Ella could hardly wait starting her big day and was particularly happy to join her big brother Hunter at the school. “Ella has been practicing wearing her uniform and packing her school bag for the past month” said Ella’s mum Tanya. “She’s also been practicing her reading GEMMA-LEE’S and writing skills” she said. Promises, Promises Time Magazine’s top ten New Years resolutions for 2013 were: Lose Weight and Get Fit, Quit Smoking, Learn Something New, Eat Healthier and Diet, Get Out of Debt and Save Money, Spend More Time with Family, Travel to New Places, Be Less Stressed, Volunteer, Drink Less. It seems that each year we have aims and ambitions to better our situations and lifestyles and yet each year we are found wanting. It’s not that these desires aren’t good things in themselves, or that they are unachievable, but I think it is because at a deeper emotional and spiritual level, these changes do not give us the contentedness or happiness we seek in the first place. Martin Seligman is a well known psychologist, who, speaking about the pursuit of happiness, talks about three types of happiness, ‘the pleasant life’, ‘the good life’ and ‘the meaningful life’. His theory, which can be traced back to the teaching of Aristotle, is that ‘the pleasant life’ in its pursuit of meeting felt needs and ‘the good life’ in using our virtues and strengths to better our situations, can never bring ultimate happiness. Ultimate happiness is found when one invests their virtues, skills and strength into a cause which is bigger than themselves. This is ‘the meaningful life’. It’s interesting that even some of the most skilled and able people in our society can be the most unhappy. Some of us live in houses which are excessively comfortable, we have interesting and secure careers, financial freedom, loving families and heaps

of leisure time and yet we are so lonely and unfulfilled. Ironically, if Seligman is right, it is our own pursuit of individual happiness and success which brings us quite the opposite. This year is a great time to think harder about ‘the meaningful life’. It may be a time to reassess and take stock of where we are with our spirituality. Is it time to re-connect with the greater cause? In the apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he finds himself chained up in prison and facing possible execution. He has given his life to the greatest cause and has spent himself in the service of others because of his faith in Jesus, yet even in the most dire circumstances he is able to write these words: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6, 7 NIV). Paul was living the meaningful life and his heart was guarded by God, for he knew that the source of true peace and contentedness was found not in the “what” but in the “ who”, in a relationship with God through his son Jesus, the greatest cause for which he was even willing to die. My prayer for you this year is that you will continue to search for deep and satisfying peace and meaning and that you will find this in the depth of knowledge found in a living relationship with Jesus, that it will change your life to the extent that you will want to share this joy with others and that you will find all of this in 2013. New Organ Donor Register Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP met with liver transplantee Kyla Devine and her mum Katelan in their Glenmore Park home last month to promote the new Australian Organ Donor Register, which replaced the Driver’s licence scheme earlier this year. Those who choose to be an organ donor can now visit www.donorregister.gov.au or www.medicare.gov.au, call 1800 777 203 or visit a Medicare Australia office to register their wishes. Mrs Devine said that any change that encourages more people to become organ donors is a change that can save lives. “Kyla was born with her liver condition, Biliary Atresia - she was diagnosed at just 4 days old. Other procedures were tried, but by the time she was 4 months old it was clear that she would need a new liver to survive.” “Kyla had to have a liver from a person under 60kgs, due to the tiny size of her body - this meant that no one in the family could be a match. However, after being placed on the transplant waiting list, a match became available from an organ donor - without the donor, Kyla would not be here today,” Mrs Devine said. Mrs Davies said the move is one of a number of initiatives in the NSW Government organ donation plan designed to lift organ transplant rates in this state. “Moving to a single national organ donor register is a key strategy of the NSW Government’s plan to increase organ donation in NSW,” Mrs Davies said. “Using the national register will bring NSW into line with other states of Australia and make it easier for people in NSW to make their wishes about donation known. “The process of obtaining a driver’s licence is not the best

Kyla Devine, alive and well today thanks to an organ donor, with Tanya Davies MP

time to discuss wishes about organ donation. It doesn’t allow people the time to have a discussion with family and friends or take the time to make an informed decision. “We’re moving to a national register – the Australian Organ Donation Register, which provides information on how to make an informed decision and prompts people to have a discussion with family and friends about organ and tissue donation and ensure that they know their intentions. “It’s these changes that we hope will encourage an increase in organ donation rates in this state for the benefit of future patients and their families,” Mrs Davies said.

PADRE PIO PARISH UPDATE

Fr Robert Riedling • 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park • Phone: 4737 9735

“Australians all let us rejoice…” In the afterglow of our recent Australia Day celebrations, it is worthwhile to reflect a little on what the day means to us two and a quarter centuries after the beginnings of European settlement. We are indeed a blessed nation. By most measures, we live in the richest nation in the world. We have an abundance of mineral wealth, plenty of food for all, universal medical care, welfare for those in need and we have not experienced an invasion by hostile forces. We have political stability and a system of government that, though not perfect, is certainly the envy of many. We have some spectacular natural scenery, flora and fauna and we are gifted with the traditions of many different cultures, enriching our nation tremendously. In short, we have much for which we ought to be thankful. Yes, we are indeed a blessed nation but we cannot afford to be complacent. One of the traps that we as Australians fall into at times is that of seeing ourselves as better than others, often expressed via jingoistic platitudes conveyed in a boorish and aggressive manner. People of faith must not believe that God is somehow favouring Australians above others and that we can therefore sit back and do nothing, simply soaking up the blessings that God is bestowing on our nation at the expense of others. History has shown repeatedly that those who hold such beliefs invariably meet an inglorious end. Do we want to be known primarily for our wealth and sporting prowess or is there something deeper and more meaningful that we should be looking at cultivating? From a Christian

perspective, Jesus gives us a clear direction. Prior to beginning his mission Jesus makes clear his “mission statement”, given to us in his own words as he returns to the region of his upbringing and speaks in the synagogue. It is no coincidence that at the beginning of his mission Jesus reads the words of the prophet Isaiah: The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the down trodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour. All the blessings our nation possesses are nothing to take pride in if we fail to focus on peace and justice. How fair is the distribution of our wealth? Are we willing to share with those who come to our shores as asylum seekers? What about our indigenous peoples? The incarcerated? Prejudice against certain races or those with disabilities or mental illness? Climate change concerns? Despite the blessings we have, Australia is a nation that also knows great inequality, injustice, poverty and hatred. Our blessings stand cheek by jowl with attitudes and realities that are reprehensible at times. When we busy ourselves with building a more just and peaceful Australia we can take some comfort in the fact that we are doing something we can be truly proud of and something which stands as a beacon for the rest of the world. Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling

Wow, Welcome to 2013!

your wandering behaviour and move to step #3. 3. Refocus – Gently bring yourself back to the plan you had created or see if it needs revisions. It’s important to keep an open heart and be gentle with yourself as you practice changing habits; it’s not going to be perfect, so the question is can we accept the reality of our imperfections? If you’re perfect, you’re not human. There’s no need to wish you good luck, because making change is not about luck, it’s about having a good strategy of being kind and compassionate with yourself as you continue to wander off and gently guide yourself back to the object of focus.

I am wondering how you are going with your New Year’s resolutions or if they are like mine….lying broken and discarded in the dust? The resolutions we make at the start of each New Year indicate that we have a sense that there is a better version of ourselves and our life to be had. .. a bit like that Bupa advert! Whether our intentions for the year have to do with work, parenting, fitness, relationships, or any other areas of our life, setting goals is an integral piece to making change. WHAT’S COOKING?

Little Red Attracts Big Crowds

After School Snack!

Families flocked to Mamre House in the January school holidays to witness the ridiculous antics of Little Red Riding Hood, her brother Blue, Granny and of course Wolfgang the Wolf. This wacky version of the children’s classic tale was written by Glenmore Park resident Gabrielle DeCelis. With witty rhymes, silly songs and twisted humour LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD entertained children and adults alike in the beautiful gardens of Mamre House. One patron said, “the wit and pace of the script was simply brilliant and a joy to watch,” and “Little Red Riding Hood certainly eclipsed the character and quirk you would find in any big smoke production.” Winner of the Glenmore Gazette Little Red Riding Hood Colouring Competition, Phoebe Johnson (aged 6, pictured with Little Red) and her family wholeheartedly agree. They certainly enjoyed the fact that this original, locally produced show entertained on many different levels, the kids loved the crazy slapstick and the grown-ups appreciated the topical and sometimes satirical humour. “The show was absolutely fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by the entire family, it certainly provided us with some great family entertainment,” said Phoebe’s mother Coral. If you missed the January season of Little Red Riding Hood at Mamre House don’t despair. You can catch all the zany fun in the gardens of the Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge during the Easter school holidays! For more information visit www.actingfactory.com

I stumbled across these over the Christmas break and thought they would be the perfect treat for your little ones to enjoy after school. Super easy to make, and super quick to devour!

PET CHAT

with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

$1000 Guide Dog Donation Happy New Year from the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital! Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2012 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $1000 for The Guide Dogs NSW. We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!!

may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Valentine’s Day. Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. And distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.

Valentine’s Day – Beware of Chocolate! We all love our pets and with Valentine’s Day coming up, please be aware of chocolate toxicity in pets. You may buy your beloved furry friend a Valentine’s gift that is safe, however if you are lucky enough to receive a box of chocolates, then your pet may find your secret stash and help themselves. Chocolate is toxic to pets. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump

INTRODUCING...

Kim of Crystal Clarity & Harmony Hello my name is Kim of Crystal Clarity & Harmony. My passion is to provide insight into people’s lives, to help them find understanding, healing and happiness in ‘The Self’ in any way I can. It may be said that illness comes from those imbalances within our Chakras from emotions or life situations that are left to fester. This is where Reiki and Crystal Light Healing will be of benefit, as it relieves anxiety, tiredness, depression plus many more conditions and balances, clears and removes blockages by getting to the source of the issues causing illness or stress. Reiki is an ancient Japanese hands-on healing technique. Crystal Healing includes the placement of crystals on or next to the body and Chakras to activate healing and change on a DNA level. Both treatments are effective and gentle, suitable for everyone and can be given via direct or distance healing. We all have different things to learn or to overcome, let this be the year you find peace, healing and happiness. If you feel I can help you in any way or if you wish to hold a reading party, please contact me on 0416 215531 or email: alal@hotmail.com.au. Blessings Kim.

THIS SPORTING LIFE Tupaea on Top of her Game Life for sixteen-year old Tahlia Tupaea of Glenmore Park promises to be just as hectic in 2013, as it was during a whirlwind 2012. The talented young basketball player began her 2013 representative program at the East Coast Challenge (ECC) in mid-January, with the two NSW Under 18 women’s team playing against two Victorian Metro teams. This tournament was followed by an Australian Under 17 Development Camp from 21-25th January, where Tupaea hopes to move closer to securing a berth in the national team for the 2014 Under 17 World Championships. The first step towards the World Championships will be held in September, when Australia competes in the FIBA Oceania Qualifying Series. In between the above dates, the Australian Under 18 Championships are also being held in April, with the NSW Metro team to be announced following the completion of the ECC. 2012 was of course unbelievably hectic for Tupaea, who won three “Most Valuable Player” Awards during the year, including the Under 16 Metro League (premiers with Penrith Panthers), Waratah Youth League (Premiers with Penrith Panthers) and National Schools Championships (bronze medal with NSW). Trials with both the Australian Under 19 and Under 17 Women’s team, plus selection in the national Under 17 team for the Oceania Youth Championships, highlighted the extraordinary talent of this modest young girl during 2012. Tupaea finished 2012 on the sidelines through injury but will be hoping to stay fit during 2013, as yet another healthy representative season beckons.

Junod Joins Kilsyth Lady Cobras The Swinburne Kilsyth Lady Cobras are happy to announce the signing of Ellie Junod for their 2013 season. Ellie Junod of Glenmore Park comes to the Swinburne Kilsyth Lady Cobras from the Sydney Uni Flames where she has been playing in the WNBL. The 19 year old forward has most recently enjoyed success with Bankstown Lady Bruins, where she was named the 2012 Under 21 Youth Player of the Year in the Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition and also named in the Waratah All Stars Side. Ellie said that she’s thrilled to be about joining the Swinburne Lady Cobras and is “feeling really good about the move, if not a tad nervous and excited at the same time. I am looking forward to the new experience and a new level of basketball” she said, it will be something different but I’m ready for the challenge.” Head Coach of the Swinburne Kilsyth Lady Cobras Peter Gay stated that he is “very excited about Ellie joining the team as she has had an exceptional junior career in NSW. ” 14

So many people set New Year’s resolutions only to find themselves failing and back where they started by January’s end. The key to ensuring your success in health and fitness for 2013 is by breaking old habits, setting smaller, achievable goals and holding yourself accountable. Most people want to exercise more in the New Year. While a gym is the best place to work out, just signing up for membership won’t make you exercise more. Make a specific fitness related goal, for example ‘I will exercise three times a week’ and continue to do it until a new, healthier habit is formed. Habits are formed by repeating the same action in the same situation day in, day out. The stronger the habit gets, the more likely you are to perform it without even thinking about it. To make the best of your 2013 why don’t you give it a try! Rj Tierney (owner) – Pure Fitness Penrith Ph: 4732 2884 rj@purefitness.net.au www.purefitness.net.au

Improved productivity not only makes you a better worker, it makes things better for everyone in the workplace. Companies with less wasted work hours and less sick time end up with lower health care costs– and an improved bottom line!

PARENT’S CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com

Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. When I address parents at the beginning of every parent group, I start by saying that they have probably started the group to find out how to fix their child’s “problem” behaviour, and they will leave the course thinking about how much they need to change their own behaviour, parenting and otherwise. If your children are yelling at each other, where do they see and hear yelling? Where do your children learn: to be kind; to persist at a task; to stay and sort things out rather than walk off in a huff; to say please and thank you? “YOU are what you teach your children.” – Magda Gerber Many people struggle with parenting because they have lots of ideas about what they didn’t like about their childhood, but they don’t quite know what else to do. Your parents were your role models, you learnt how to parent from them. The hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of interactions between you and your parent/s were stored in your procedural memory, and now parenting has become automatic. You say the same thing that your parent/s did, you respond in the same way, and you say to yourself “I’m starting to sound like my mother/father”. This may displease, upset, or concern you. You want to be different, and that’s the first step in becoming a “reflective parent’. Reflective parenting is not easy, it is really hard work, but it is worthwhile. It is stopping and thinking before you react to your children, thinking about how your child may be feeling and thinking (empathy), and thinking about what may have gone wrong in the interaction with your child and resolve to do better next time. It means pulling apart the interaction: what you said; what she said; thinking about how she may have felt; how

you felt when certain things were said; what were your intentions and motivations; the point at where things went wrong and misunderstandings occurred; and what went well. This technique is grounded in the understanding that your child is a separate being with his/her own attitudes, beliefs, thoughts, intentions, desires, and motivations. How do we become really good role models for our kids when our own role models weren’t so great growing up? Sheer will power. Getting some therapy when it’s needed. Some of the parents I work with have had terrible childhoods. These parents work really hard on becoming good role models for their kids by thinking every day in every way about how much they want to change for their children’s sake. Wanting to make themselves better so their kids can be better. They have developed reflective parenting as a way of life. When they stuff up, which they do (as we all do) they sit with their kids, and explain how they felt about the child’s behaviour (owning their own feelings, not blaming the child), they apologise (sincerely), and they engage in a dialogue about how they can do better next time. This is such good stuff, transformational stuff, the stuff that changes the lives of children and future generations. It takes a lot of courage to get past old wounds, face up to where you are going wrong, and learn new ways of knowing, being, and doing. Parenting is always a work in progress. “Who we are and how we engage with the world are much stronger predictors of how our children will do than what we know about parenting. If we want to teach our chilldren to dare greatly in this “never enough” culture, the question isn’t so much “Are you parenting the right way?” as it is: “Are you the adult that you want your child to grow up to be?”.” – Brene Brown
